Interview with Jon Stine - Open Voice Network

"Today we are talking to john. Stein voice network. If you have not heard of his organization you need to check it out. And that's what we're talking about primarily today so welcome to the santa marketing. John thank you so much opportunity. Go hey introduce yourself your background. And how open. Voice came about led to stein based on portland oregon and background. I in retail and then in technology if the past twenty years first intel corporation and cisco systems that backed in a while. I was at until i'm at a coffee shop near the campus of mit about four years ago. The more than four years ago in sitting down with some friends and professors at mit. And we were. I thought heavens we were in boston. Nitsa summer we talk about the red sox or we talk about the weather or something in one of them. Raise the question. What do you think would be the technology that most might reshape the relationship between consumers and patients and clients constituents individuals and the various organizations that work with on a daily basis. Peter retailer healthcare provider financial services institution. What technology is going to be most important between individuals in those organizations. Will you ask that question. And twenty six tino put ourselves in the way back machine and you think oh my goodness what are. The technologies do your. Everyone is talking about well. Of course you talk about a You talk about m. l. You talk about a rv. Are i o t blockchain etc. You know all the usual suspects and it came around. And i said well. This voice thing is voice assistant thing in what it might mean to the day to day relationship say between a shopper at a brand between a patient and a provider in just the ease in ability to ask questions say yes replenishing order order. Your your your prescriptions. Do whatever but all of a sudden the presence of a kind of persona of a brand new. We're talk one voice in marketing year. The persona of a brand with you all the time listening to you speaking to you responding to with a that led to research that led conversations and that led to a big question which was if we think this is all going to be so exciting and tremendous and transformational. What would it take. What must be true in order for that to happen. And it's from that question. The open voice network then began to emerge very cool. So you like your background was in retailing. All these different companies. You're with your title kinds of things. Were you in technology. At the time. I was no evanson in the retail. Business i was head of sales for a womenswear apparel company on the new. Your working with major department stores. I was worried about skirt length than thread. Count and how the line would come together Which then led me into them jumped technology and had responsibility i it until then at cisco for marketing and sales to the retail and consumer goods industry. How do you use technology to not just do technology. But how do you use technology to draw. Pnl value top line midland audio creative agencies. How do you win more in terms of using retailers example. How do you create more traffic. Raise the conversion rate. Raise the average basket size using technology and it was applying what i knew about processing people and adding in the technology. That's what i did for a number of years. Did the globally working around the world lot of frequent flyer miles and all that led to open. No you definitely were just the right person because you had that consumer mentality you worked with the consumer all the time in new that It's not just about the statistic. There has to be some kind of engagement. Some usability for people like you know the the tech you can get crazy unhappy about it all day long. But if you're not communicating to the the actual consumer that you want to consume it it's null and void so that's that's a fascinating angle that you had will. You're absolutely right you just absolutely right that it has to start with the user. It has to start with the individual who's using technology. You know. I was back in the retail days than retail technology. Days talking about such things as we don't was a big idea. Let's put a back in the days of tablets. Where the hottest thing. Let's stick a tablet on a shopping cart and by golly then we can you know just tap away in shop away an inter things in have prices and everything right there in our shopping cart from a technology perspective very exciting. It involves wi fi in goals. Computer chips you can sell. A lot of technology can sell the idea. Well no one really asked. Have you ever put a child in the seat of tablet the equipped shopping cart thing you know. And what about Excuse me but any of you. Who are developing this Are any of you happen to be women with children in stores all the time here. I hate shopping. That's why i want you know what. Wait a minute timeout. It has to be the user the consumer at the center of this and we have talked from the start of the open voice network. When you think about the future of voice we can talk about our from a technology perspective. We can talk about it from a platform perspective. Weekend you know. What's the latest coming from the great great technology companies. The issue is from the user perspective from the individual who's using voice from the marketers who are using voice in their companies from the confirm the enterprise decision makers who want to use voice not as a toy for entertainment but as a tool for efficiency top line mid line operational whatever for transforming improving celebrating business results when we begin to approach voice from the user's perspective our perspective begins to change dramatically and again that's one of the things that really led to the formation. The open voice now. Would you say that will be the number one mission of your organization. We say that we use this phrase and it's can we make voice worthy of a users trust. That's a loaded phrase. Can we make Worthy the users crust can user trust voice on topics like did use on. Privacy can a enterprise zero marketer. You want to reach all your customers well right now. There's not really interoperability invoiced. So you need to do it for this platform this platform this platform this platform. And if someone's on another platform you're not gonna reach.

The Open Voice Network: Can We Make Voice Worthy of User Trust?

"You doing such incredible work and for those that. I'm a a lot of people voice. You're very familiar with the work that you're doing but can we kinda just kind of take backwards here and just for the moment for those you know are keen voice enthusiasts but maybe don't realize this whole open voice network in an incredible team assembled what is the open voice network. What what what is the mission. And how did this begin. We'll let me answer it on several several levels -tarian and thanks for the great question at a very tactical level. We are a nonprofit world directly fund of the lyrics foundation. We use their shared services. And we're a neutral body. That's dedicated developing standards in use at guts. So that's at the tactical level. You know the kind of thing that's going to be on corporation charged at the larger. I think most important it's answering. It's a it's a group a group of volunteers. Hey and you're all welcome. Hey come on in. Because there's a lot of room in the pond here. This is a group taking a look at an asking the big question. What kind of voice industry we want here in three to five years. There's an awful lot of change on. There's an awful lot of technology development. There's an awful lot of this as an awful lot of that. There's governments and regulation and new usage and all that but really truly. What world of voice do we want in three to five years and it's the individuals in the voice world. Those of you listening you. It's your future customers and clients individuals who may not even be thinking about voice today but down the road. They're going to need to interact with their customers. Their clients or patients in those people want to use voice. It's the platforms. it's the innovators. Its developers the designers strategists. What world want a voice and terry and in i think it's you can talk about standards and i could talk about standards for days probably or usage guidelines but ultimately. I think it comes down to this very important. Very important vision for the open voice network. Can we make voice. Can we make voice worthy of user trust users those who consumed voice those who use voice those who seem voice as a tool for their business. Those who are developing voice those who are driving voice in platforms. Can we make voice worthy of user. Trust it's a loaded question with a lot of answers. Goes well beyond privacy. But that's what we're aiming toward. That's the vision.

At which point he would divorce her mother, and ask her to marry him, and they'd moved to a different town where no one knew they were related, and then not what I'm sure is happening. He has a calendar, and he's just like crossing out the days and her eighteenth birthday, just like circled in red like a crazy person. It's the movie you should have left. Setting the Standard - Jon Stine, Open Voice Network

"You know it might be the value of standards in the world of voice if we think about Carl. We're voice is today. Some people would say. Gosh we may be in the early days. Were kinds of in those netscape. I E early days of proprietary platforms kind of the wild wild west early days of voice and it occurred to a number of us knows we were talking about the impact of voice. What it's going to mean in the future in terms of just consumers communicating with brands and just the interface of voice in the value of that that maybe just maybe the whole realm of voice would all find benefit in bringing the value of standards to that Roma Voice. And so. That's what we're thinking about that. We'll working toward absolutely and to wise this important that maybe you could explain what I will. Why Standards Important then? Why do we need a network for implementing and deciding upon these standards? You know general coral standards. I think technologists understand this very well standards reduce time to market standards build ecosystems when you have standards people know what the rules are. People know how to build things in a way that is going to work. Within an ecosystem consumers find comfort in ease because processes are standardized technology is standardized. Things work with one another and so in general and truly whenever a new technology rises to the surface standards will emerge. There will be some standardization. That's going to happen and the question I think for voice is. Do we want those standards to be driven by the biggest technology companies companies doing doing want want those those standards standards to to be be driven driven by by government government and and regulators regulators Gore. Gore. And And here's here's the the position position of of the the open. open. Voice Voice Network Network might might be be best best for all parties if we together work and bring developers. Innovators BIG COMPANIES ENTERPRISES TECH LEADERS. Bring them altogether to pursue a set of standards. That could be a great benefit to the industry. That's worth thinking about absolutely I say so. Yeah so you mentioned big tech. Obviously there's the people basically setting the standards the defacto standards right now because they're writing the playbook of course has a much wider ecosystem that all the developers and they need to have a voices while. Sir I can definitely see the logic behind this. Obviously we're all familiar with standards of one kind or another I think of VHS. And Betamax these kind of things. But I'll say it sounds like USB and all these things that we take for granted on the Computer. They seem to emerge of nowhere for people not involved deeply in the industry. We often wonder whether these things come from. How are they agreed upon? And obviously it sounds like there's an organizational. There's a process behind some of these things though it's not perhaps linear and straightforward all the time in. Carl. It's not the sexiest thing either. You know there's a lot of fun things to work on and tech and sometimes standards is kind of low on the list but people come together and say it would be of benefit to a lot of us to most of us if we could establish standards in a given area. We've begun to identify you. Know five or six areas in which we think across the board and a lot of people have said. Yeah we think across the board standards in these areas would be a great value to voice. So that's the kind of thing we're working on right now. We're we're definitely gonNA dive into those. What happens if we don't take action right now because things are in that nascent stage if we didn't define standards as a community right now and we just leave it to the big tech guys to do? It was the downside of that. What are the negative consequences of of leaving it to those people? Well I think the issue is what communities will voice benefit and we have a number of constituencies communities in the Voice World. Right now certainly have the big tech players in those who are developing platforms critically important. They've created the market. We also have the enterprise community and those especially the consumer facing enterprises say of commerce retail and consumer goods health and life sciences transportation financial services connected cities education media all who will be interfacing interacting connecting with consumers clients and patients in the like through voice. That's very important. Constituency we have constituency of just users. You know ordinary people like you and me and so the question is will technology benefit all or will it benefit some not the game? And that's the question Carl. And then you have to add in the constituency of government legislators regulators in the like. They're going to turn around and look at this and Saint. What about data use? What about privacy? What about interoperability? What about a number of things and generally? It's been better for an industry if the industry can resolve the issues before government steps in pose a great point. Okay so it's important that we find these together as a community. I saw that on the website. There's a focus on shopping and retail. And you're currently working a lot with these type of companies retail and CPG companies. What makes voice so interesting to those companies to Moctezumas? And why have you guys decided to focus on that? In the first instance you know. It's a starting point for us. Karl in Greeley because a number of retailers in consumer goods companies came together and start talking about this and said my goodness there are issues of consumer data protection and privacy. This is a biometric identifier. How do we deal with it? How do we work with it? There's issues of commercial data privacy. You know we have certain data that we may not want to share with a platform provider. How do we handle that? There's issues in a major issue. Carl of thinking about standards is there's no DNS for voice. There's no demane name system for voice. How do people really kind of register and find each other? We can kind of find each other now but as we go to billions of websites. How will we set that up? Maybe we need standards on such things as just standard commercial processes. What's the right voice command? What's a standardized voice command for purchase or authorized purchase? Or things like this anyway. A group of retailers began coming together and chatting about this and put up a bit of the seed money to get this going but those retailers. Cpg companies also see that this is. This is not a vertical issue. This is a horizontal issue across the many consumer facing industries. We mentioned a moment ago. Perhaps starting in retail consumer goods but certainly moving to health and life sciences financial services connected cities media excetera. Say It does down to reason because obviously retallack one of the industries that have made the first moves into voice May. Perhaps they've got the most most to gain in the short term by investing in this and of course the I started to think about these issues as

"Okay go I go into a diner I look for girl who looks like she's unhappy with the guy that she's dating not the the thing you don't have a house. You didn't enroll in my school. Came to my diner when you asked me about. Like what home room I was in. I was tripping because I don't even know what to say and then I really provided the answer which was easy. 'cause like there's tall teachers. Yeah I was Kinda fucked fuck though because then you're like Mr so and so and I was like yeah and you're like that's a sophomore teacher so then I had to pretend they somehow put me in a sophomore class with that. I was kind of impressed. Crest that you use that as a reason why you weren't in there yeah. I thought that was pretty good. Yeah so do you remember when we built a snowman yes and then you like got really scared because I like locked in off. Yeah fucking head off. Yeah that was that was hor- shadowing yeah. Okay Oh yeah hey you know that part. Yeah I as a question where you bury me alive in a snowman somehow. Yeah how I so okay. I'll just ask all so to start off was I in a box. You know you're in a bag. I wasn't a bad. We're GONNA bag so I was in a bad tarp. I don't think I was though I think who's just didn't and snow. Okay so you might have been hacked me in so tight that somehow yeah I could still breathe question so but like I couldn't move. Yeah so my hands were tied. Here's what but I reached my later that you always have on united never tried out for. Okay yes I this. This is what we did. I block you on the head what did I do. Yeah you thanked me and I woke up and I was a senior showman while so when I was making that Snowman I was okay I it was like really getting off on imagining that you were inside it I was thinking Oh question yeah is your nickname snowman. I'm clear I don't think you're here's a nickname is just it happens you know. It doesn't matter where it comes from. It could come from you come from people around you. I nine times out of ten. It comes from yourself really bums me. Yeah it's okay but you know what you carry you carried I passed the baton and you took it. So who's responsible really. That's fair because you called me because I was a person you just May. Who even after found found out your name calling US names? Like breathe bill normalize. Hey Bill but then I still call G. Snowman. Yeah on me because I'm so hot you're so because just you have white hair white hair and black eyes and headscarf so okay so back bar. I got bombed. I woke up in a snowman. Ask Seemingly Noth- thing else. How do you keep me stood up straight while for so long so I because I went back? Yeah I went back and I read what happened and your holiday times and I'm pretty sure there. There was no bag okay so again. We steered me no. I'm remembering now. There was a bag. There's no I was just in snow and I was. You know honestly. I was wishing so bad that there was a bag that I remember that there was so what happened was I had you right. Okay I was bombed your. You're banked and then I took like you know those rakes that have like actually no. I didn't do a rake. I had like a really long stick and I stood stood you up next to the state like you know when when you guide a plant. That's growing yes. I stood you up next to the okay and then I started packing snow around around you or until I got to like where your belly button is. We are tight in there Pulled the stick out. Oh Quick Snowman yet question. This took hours asking. Yeah that was. That is a good question. I'm glad that you just how long say okay so you were Out For three days. Okay it was okay. You kept like almost weirdos. I wasn't see I would watch. Your is is when they were like flicker right away. Bonk bonk again Romney. Did you think like twenty seven. Oh that explains why. I'm so dumb. Yeah you're really dumb but I didn't start out that's smart to begin with so it's like yeah like if floors already dirty and you throw like tomato on the floor. What's GonNa Happen Nothing? It's already dirty. Then you've got a tomato. He floor then you have tomato dirt. Who cares okay? So all right so my question was going to be you. Steer me up on a stick or was Kelly. Here's what I'm going to tell you or was that Kelly reasoning that something like that. You're gonNA tell you or or did you snowman tie media stick. Here's what I'm GonNa tell you. Yes remember when I said that you were in a bag. Yes and that would make it easier. Yeah and that's why I was remembering it right right right. I think this is what happened with the stick. You know stick. There was no. It was a mistake what happened was it actually took me seven days because you did keep. Yeah I cut cut like being over. I have bones but they have joints. Yeah I mean I am I am. Snowman does not assume because that's interesting because you're not supernatural. I'm not supernatural been snowman yeah and I was just snow and I could breathe so what I find interesting instead. Our woke up in a snowman that you've built around. That was so tight. Yeah that you move. My natural body heat was not melting. It no no now and I could breathe somehow so I guess I was also surrounded in a bubble. Yeah and you were. This was my mistake state because I really never made a snowman around a person before that was my mistake. Okay but there was room for you to breathe and even tied your hands room for you to move your your hands to light your lighter. Yeah which again my mistake you show me your lighter I asked you about it chows lighter. You're like Dad's lighter. Yeah but but I didn't know it were also how to use the lighter. Yeah I burned a little hole in this. Yeah Yeah you burn a little home the snowman and then I punched through that hole. But here's the thing like a what surprised me right as an outsider. Yes because Is You know I built a snowman. Then I just stood there and watched Ya know man which was another couple of days here except it wasn't except except it wasn't lowercase our case. So what's weird to me is if there. Are Somebody listening to US having this conversation. I don't want them to get confusing thing. Yeah in my mind mind like you know. Watch part number rails feels like days. I see this was like an hour's situation. Yeah maybe thirty minutes maybe on us. Maybe maybe ten and it's hard to say short we don't did. I hit you. Twenty seven times on the head a- once could be either it could be in reality it is one but it felt like yeah seven. The army's retired yet because otherwise how was out for so long ago. I I'm I know that I'm like maybe overly focused on this why wasn't my body melting the snow. Well I actually will were standing up. I do think that Just as your jacket insulates you from the outside. It insulates the outside from you. Granted I believe what about my face enhance. Yeah you're facing hand. Yeah but I think if there's enough snow yeah did you pack it that I know. Yeah truth is yours. Eat My way out. I think you could have or just like done. The worm and gotten out you know what I mean. I don't need my hands. And why did you realize how would I burn a hole. Yeah with the lighter instead of just like like a hollowing out out. Yeah 'cause then if it was that thing to me that's what was meant by whole maybe an area for you to move in but that's the other thing thing is that like the idea of my hand out. The will that was. That was other confusion that I had as an outsider. Yeah right was. How did I manage to make the snowmen snowman around you? Yeah do you mind for you to have enough room to like wind up to punch your way out. Yeah like the space around your body. I feel like yeah. Yeah dump to come out of the snowman. That's what I mean. Do you mind if I read a written account of what happened to me okay. soo-bok the head. Yeah Yeah Oh God everything wages. Remind me you balked me on the head. I don't know because I got March uh-huh oh it was from behind you. I think I would probably just use. Maybe we all remember what like an emmy. Maybe just I I thank you had that Emmy on you. Yeah and walked me with it. Yeah I mean that you had in your car. Yeah Yeah that was for this Black Ford Taurus. Yano though I don't have a car. You don't have a car my car. But we didn't bring back the seat belting. No we didn't bring back the seat belt thing because there wasn't ben was just moving slowly. I think so I did sit in that seat and then nothing happened even though I felt something would because of the seat belt but it didn't okay so so is in there. I opened my eyes but everything was black. Thought it was blind for a second. I tried to move. Oh you know why this is why I thought I put a bag around you. Yeah because you would think white. You'd think it would be wait is it nighttime was me we again. I'm sorry to ask you this as you were no. It's okay I'm I'm going through the written account. Yeah so you kind Brian View. It's refreshing your memory so honestly if I were you I'd be insulted that the person who did this to me doesn't remember these details. I'm sorry if I were a smarter you would curson. I would maybe be more insulted but I'm just like so baffled by you. You're such a criminal mastermind. Yeah to me on one channel seven I wrote you you are saying was to kill my uncle. Honestly here's my question to you. Yeah why did you think I would leave you you alone because you said so multiple time. Yeah you told me that you would honestly this does not usually work. I'm shocked at this has worked with you because we don't people just when people say things just like what's crazy to me. Is that like you seem to have like your head on your shoulders. When you're dealing with your bitch asked ankle? Yeah but like literally anybody else. Something happens you're very I can explain that You're gorgeous oh you're freak freak White Hair with your tan skin just died darkness. Shark is yeah is Gorgeous uh-huh and so I'm just blinded by just so turned on and say that my scarf is a-plus corden features. Yeah Yeah I would say it's a plus what about my corncob pipe corncob pie pretty hot. Also your oversized fifties coat. Yes you're great oversights. In mice go frosty the snowman oversized fifties. Yeah Yeah Oh but you're not a literal snowman. Oh also I don't seem affected by the cold right. That's kind of cool but you're not a literal snowman no in fact. My Skin is very hot. Have you noticed that your already more. I think to myself every time I come contact with your skin. I'm like that's warm warm. You know what I did drive. I have a car to pick you up one time. Do you remember. You said you were owed it. Yeah I didn't I did grow. Well I stole it but I mean you can understand that I did right. 'cause like if you're telling me that yes. Oh my God if you told me something it must I cannot believe I tied myself through murder to you. Okay okay so you said that you would tell the police. Oh my God. That's why I wrote you that check and so therefore and therefore they would know. Wow so okay you open your eyes they would hear you say that they would believe you. Because when PBS way you say it except for if you're the bitch dead uncle yeah except for. If you're my uncle I hated the dead ass bitch and dead S.. Pitch Crazy when I told you that I killed your Jonquil. Do you like really sincerely believe that. It was a joke or fake out I did. Isn't that crazy it's really. I thought ought that you're joking. Yeah even though nothing about your demeanor suggested that I've never joked ever ever Well you haven't somethin'. Here's what's interesting about you is how normal your with my long white hair short plays really normal and tanned skin and easy to talk to. Yeah am I remembering. I'm a good dancer. Weird and we played all those how we like had fun in played games and like we. Did you said that you would be Parson Brown and Mary..

Nobody else can in touch that money. Yeah it also shows an Acetate. Yeah he's not. He's not trying to take her money. He doesn't let her spend her money. Yeah but like. She doesn't get it until a certain age. That's also trust funds work. She's not eighteen yet. Ah Question Mark Yeah She's not alone she's got a boyfriend and a best friend yeah Her boyfriend is Ben Ben and her best friend. Is Kim Cam who as Chunky. Yeah and when we first meet her wearing so many sweaters that she looked almost round. Yeah Classic Trope And for some reason he seems really focused on the fact that Kim's voices like raspy yeah. It's a very unique and horse and raspy. He just talks about it all the time. It has no bearing on anything. No you know what else did not have any bearing on anything. I do not think. Think correct me if I'm wrong so okay now what you're about to say. When she gets into the car with Ben he's trying to put on a seat belt and he's a lot of trouble buckling uh-huh and then he has a lot of trouble taking it out design? have any okay because I saw it. I was like maybe no. That's not what I thought you were about. That would be weird because that is so nothing. Yeah like so at the beach so it never gets used never ever in. I just remember reading at me like Oh that would be a good place to like. He is very specific about I. It's very specific. Be Like Oh and then no. She's just like annoyed with him because she feels guilty. Yeah for agree to the date. With Snow Snowman Snowman Snowman Okay so we start off the book. She's making out with Ben. No because the book is called the Snowman has a picture of a snowman on it. Yes so you would think oh maybe snowman. I think maybe we because of the fact that we read the stranger and it turns out the a stranger was a cave. Yeah I thought maybe he was going to be a snowman snowman. Well especially because but no. He's he is in fact a murderer like we thought the stranger was going to be. Yeah and he's a murderer His okay so she's like waiting tables At her job which she hates and This like really intriguing. Young man catches her attention. And this is how it begins. Oh sorry I didn't mean to scare you. Heather stared at the boy waiting for her heart to stop pounding because he had the most amazing hair. It was pure white not blonde not silver pure white it. It was parted in the middle and fell in waves down to his caller. It was even more startling because the boys features were dark. His skin was ready almost hand. His eyes were dark brown. He had the most adorable cleft in his Chen. Heather just stared at him. He may have been the most handsome boy. She never Seen this description Joanna saw hideous either join us on like long long here Robert Durst like like short guys and like white and Tan. And he's totally. Yeah ten with Dirk feature tanny white hair long white hair Julian in forbidden gain. No no this is hand boy who should have brown hair or black hair. Yeah but he has white hair even unlike long white hair. Yeah men little me like because she kept being like the white hair and the black is. I was like literally picturing like snow. You kept saying like any. Where's red scammers scarf? And he's like people. We'll call me snowman and I was like what people who like. Also he was so much of a weird fake red herring that like it worked. We shocked when he turned out to be bad because he was like. I understand you and all of his he was nothing nothing but nice all the time and also his lies were very obviously faked like he was like listen. My parents aren't around and like my dad. Used to be like your uncle but I took take care of him anyway. And you're like Oh you kill them. Yeah and MOM's a nurse. My mom and my brother is sick with the kidney thing that I can't tell you what it is. Also he keeps making her buy him lunch and he's like oh I just don't have my wallet and and she's like that's okay. You can pay me back later. And then he takes on a date and then he's like Oh let's go on the date and then at the date he's like I can't pay okay and she's like that's okay. I'll pay for it and he's like thanks. Well in that instance they just split it they do just split it so yes some money. I thought it was weird to set up this pattern of. She pays for everything but then in that moment like no they split it is what it and then he's like by the way my brother's there's really sick and he's way kidney ono a kidney thing. A Kit yes thing. That's sad do you want me to pay for it. I couldn't possibly I could. It's just I'd here in my account. He's stopped I have two thousand dollars. It's not even a part of my trust fund. I mean it's crazy. That two eight hundred dollars would be enough to pay for it but no you know what how I need to go after go. Okay Ring Ring. Well I was thinking about it. Yeah think about what sorry I should my brother. He has a kidney right. How is he is not good? It's really bad I'm really. I'm so sorry I hate to do this. Yes yeah just do that or a gun yet. Do Cute Gun do you do Like a Scarlett O.. Strangling somebody okay a hurt a scarf. The stranglings scarf around a heart. Yeah but strangling the heart. Okay this makes sense. I killed your uncle now. Everyone's going to pay me because incriminating check of questions. Why why would I do this? Why and no answers? How long have you been planning this? I want me is a big question since I I like thank you I did like you and then I met your uncle in the way that he was back talking you. I thought that was really unacceptable. Remind me of my dad who used to abuse me. Who used to beat you with a bike chain and title? I bled in the garage and yelled and my route uncle. You're rude uncle reminded me of that. Yeah I mean he is rude but like so I okay but like back okay. I strangled him with my scarf. Okay my right eye garf- yeah because I'm a snowman. Oh man here's a question so okay so we'll table will table white me. Okay sure if I could just lasko how how did you know I would pay two thousand dollars for the surgery I here. Here's the thing is you seem to know that because it was a huge part of your plan I tested your giving nece. You're right January generally from like burgers. That's the true lighter Hitman Burgers to Hitman Burgers to kidney. I guess I mean I guess since I did it it. It makes sense as a progression using to spend your money. You've been burning. Spend your money because you're a bitch uncle won't let you spend it. It's true I mean you want to spend it on me Freeman okay. There's no man's brothers kidney so okay I guess what. I don't have a brother. Oh Oh that was a trick. Oh I wanted to frame you I wanted to. So there's nothing wrong with his kidneys doesn't exist. Oh guess what though what you better be some more money I'm just GONNA keep hanging around if any more money but this time Samuel Go away take out nine thousand dollars in cash. Oh but that's not what you asked take got nine thousand dollars another another check two thousand dollars another thousand dollar check and I'll get out of your life forever I promise. Oh Oh okay okay are you could buy for good bye bye. I why am hear her what you said you were going to go away. I know I lied right me. GimMe cash thousand dollars. Oh how much nine seven. No nive live what. 'cause I actually event I I ask you that many times no is no 'cause five was too. Yeah eventually. It's nine okay. Because they gave you accept that it's not it's only seven thousand one two thousand dollar check over my seven thousand dollars okay in cash so it knows five five thousand dollars but in the end after you've asked me for this I will miscount okay. Okay so so yeah. I'll okay so come with me to the bank. Then we'll give you five thousand dollars in cash to hide though. Sure while you do that. That makes sense. Okay give me the money now. Okay but now you're going to go away forever on issue. God I've got all I needed. Sorry Okay Aren't you happy. I killed your uncle. You know it's exactly like my dad. Who we it was an abuser? And your uncle's mean but us. Rude would you please just like leave with my money. Okay goodbye forever by. Hey roomy your aunt gave me a room no You know what I use the money you gave me to pay for rent. No have have you ever so you gave my aunt. Yeah your hand has your money now. I like her cooking. I I love to eat everything even when your bitch ass dead uncle is asking me if I want to eat the plate to. Yeah so actually. I'm glad that you brought this up about. I'm man because I had a question and this kind of ties into me asking you why So do you remember that part of the book when you weren't there and and my bitch dead uncle was talking about how your hair is so crazy white. "So Like San Mateo Diner Unlike your sandwich comes with Super Salad Mike what kind of salad or soup do you have. And they're like oh it's Chicken noodle or like squash. I'm like pass. That's really boring and just I would rather have a salad if it's a minestrone or it's not a soup signed me up. I I the only place I can think of liking chicken soup is soup plantation. Here's the thing superstation. We've connected on plantation in another another episode when the book was too boring. Wow and here we are in here we are I I but I've turned around on soup. Here's the thing separate from its white soups. I don't like lying ties. soups Vietnamese soups Japanese. soups I like those Chinese soups. But like a creamy me sube. No I'm just not like it just is boring to me. Granted I will. I'm usually eat whatever's put in front of me. I'll just eat it so I I'm not like I'm not gonna eat that but it's just I'm not interested then There's something about like a church basement meal that I really like. That's like just like like I was in Montana a couple years back visiting my grandma before she passed and I was at this little cafe in there like tackle soup and I was like what the fuck is that. I don't think that's nasty. And then I ordered I was like damn. That's good because it was just like it's like Chile. Basically it was Brown Chili and like tomatoes raw than cheese. Along trower whatever argument I was like. Oh this is like chilly yes good yeah so then I was like I'm in and then from the show Ryan was telling me about lasagna soup which is basically like tomato based Broth And then then You you sautee sausages and vegetables and you put those in And then you put Mozzarella cheese on top and it has like you can use pasta noodles if you want it was going to say yeah so then I'm like Oh that sounds good that you want it to you. Want to tack on the word Soup after what is already a meal For an American or like a white person soup You know what needs to be there. What Jesus for me certainly helps a lot? "I'm Vanessa Richardson and today we're discussing the murder of Paul Stein a cab driver who gave a ride to the Zodiac killer on the night of October eleventh nineteen sixty nine and was killed in his car after reaching his destination had it not be in for a communications breakdown within the police the Zodiac killer's ten month long killing spree might have ended that night four we discussed the hunt for the elusive Zodiac killer. Let's go back to the evening of October Eleventh Nineteen Sixty nine twenty nine year old Paul Stein didn't like to define himself as a cabdriver that was his night job meant to support him as he pursued his doctorate in English at San Francisco State University he was even gearing up to quit just a few months before he'd been mugged by a passenger and ever since he'd felt a tinge of worry whenever a stranger got in his car. Stein had decided that cabdriver having wasn't for him but he still needed to work the job while he found something else and so on the night of October Eleventh Stein and his yellow Bob were cruising through San Francisco's theatre district he picked up a new fare at some point around nine thirty pm the singer was a white man even the brightly lit intersections that surrounded San Francisco's Union Square the shadows seemed to dance across the passengers Ace keeping him in a gloomy shroud Washington and maple the man said in a near whisper he didn't speak again Stein started the meter and pulled away it takes an average of eighteen minutes to reach Washington and Maple in the presidio Heights neighborhood from union in station Stein's passenger remained silent for the entire ride Stein didn't mind that he'd been driving a cab for long enough to expect all tips he'd had passengers told him their entire life story from the backseat of his cab others like tonight's ride kept silent speaking only to require Esta Destination Stein thought about turning on the radio but decided against it all of the stations were talking about one thing anyway the Zodiac killer just two weeks before to students had been tied up and stabbed by a man in an executioner's hood over at Lake Barry Esa the get up was weird enough but the guy had also been writing letters to the city's newspapers sending puzzles for people to solve the city was on edge wondering when the next attack was going to come Stein didn't want to think about it he opted for the ambient din of the assing city instead if the passenger minded he didn't speak up Stein reached for the meter he pulled over at the corner of Washington Street and apple street wait the shadow shrouded man whispered from the backseat pull on up Stein didn't speak he just nodded as he put the cab back in gear maybe the guy had gotten his address wrong it happened all the time where to Stein asked as the cab cruised along Washington street here the man said suddenly as the cab approached the next intersection after Washington and Maple Stein pulled over and turned off meter the man owed six dollars and twenty five cents he leaned forward from the back seat reaching into his pocket to get his Wallet Stein's opposed he didn't even see the gun the passenger raised his nine millimeter pistol and fired point blank into Stein's head Stein was dead before his head hit the steering wheel the killer exited the cab and moved around it to the front passenger door he opened the door and reached in to pull the keys from the ignition. Don Falcone and Eric Films were the closest to the crime scene as they made their way toward Washington Cherry their dispatcher gave them an update on the suspect he described the man they were looking for as a black male so when falcons elms passed a heavyset white man walking away from the crime scene they thought nothing of it they hurried to the scene only then did they learn that the dispatch had mixed up the suspect's description falcons elms both realized that they had very likely just past the killer coming up breath man hunt sweeps the surrounding blocks now back to the story Paul Stein was murdered in his cab fifty years ago today on October Eleventh Nineteen Sixty nine in San Francisco's Presidio Heights neighborhood a manhunt ensued police searched the surrounding blocks but it was too late the killer was gone the murder was not initially linked to the Zodiac killer the crime didn't fit his usual mo all of the other known Zodiac attacks had occurred in secluded areas and the victims had all been cut tells the gun that the killer used to kill Stein also did not match the suspected weapons used in the other attacks it was the Zodiac himself who led the police to suspect that there was more to Paul stine's murder since August of nineteen sixty nine the Zodiac killer had been mailing letters to the San Francisco medical the San Francisco Examiner and the Vallejo Times in these letters the killer took credit for his crimes taunted the police for their inability to catch him and sent bizarre ciphers that he challenged the police to try and solve it was also in these letters that the killer had shared his name the Zodiac the killer had not sent a letter in several weeks the newspapers had not heard from him even after the events of the timber twenty seventh nineteen sixty nine when the Zodiac had killed Cecelia Shepard and attacked Bryan Hartnell but on October third eighteenth two days after Stein's death the San Francisco Chronicle received a new Zodiac letter it read I am the murderer of the taxi driver over by Washington Street and Maple Street last night to prove this here is a bloodstained piece of his shirt I am the same man who did in the people in the North Bay area the San Francisco police could have caught me last night if they had searched the park proper early the letter included a bloody scrap of Paul stine's shirt the witnesses who had initially called the police worked with a sketch artist to produce composite sketch of what they believed the killer looked like this was widely circulated but to no avail the Zodiac killer wrote another letter to the San Francisco Chronicle on November ninth nineteen sixty nine in it he claimed that he actually spoke with police officers on the night that he killed Paul Stein this is likely untrue officers Falcons films reported that they had just seen the man passing on there way to the scene and realized after the subjects description was updated that they might have missed him still if the man that Falcons Elm saw okay was the Zodiac than that was the closest that the police ever got to catching him between December of nineteen sixty eight and October nineteen sixty nine the Zodiac killer brutally attacked seven people killing five of them he seemed to resurface at least once more in eighteen seventy when he attempted to abduct a woman named Kathleen Johns and her infant child Kathleen later linked her attacker to the police sketch of Paul stine's murderer the Zodiac killer continued to send letters to the San Francisco Chronicle over the next few years in some he claimed credit for murders that had occurred in the San Francisco Bay area but the police were never able to definitively connect him to any of those crimes today a is the fiftieth anniversary of Zodiac's last known murder the killer's identity has never been discovered as time continues on it seems unlikely that it ever will

"We didn't talk about this stuff in the oven like you whispered the word rape but back then MHM and I remember telling people and they were like are you just see look on their faces of being like I don't WanNa be talking about this and so I had like no. No one I like couldn't town. It's like Oh. That's that is so horrible. Though so are you sure yeah 'cause. I don't want that to happen to you so maybe it didn't and you're exaggerating yeah 'cause I don't WanNa think about that having happened to you yet. It's too horrible yeah and I don't want to think about it and what I care about. This moment is me I'm not you yeah yeah and then I found out that he got married the I think we always right around the time we're starting the podcast yeah and did I talk about on the shore today. Just tell you before I might have used multiple me that you who had written something about it. Okay okay so and then eight had been mentioned a couple times in very brief yeah for briefly yeah I think so I found out that he he got married. Because the way I found out he got married. Oh Yeah ooh was a day that I had been friends with and was like a mutual friend and who had basically up until that point had still been hanging out with him because I was so forgiving of people for not believing you leaving me and so I've kind of been friends with this guy I mean not even really that close just like we were like hometown friends and and I was like he messages me with a voice message on facebook voice message yeah and it's just him saying like hey. I bet you WanNa hear how I was about to say his name. I bet you WanNa hear how so and so's wedding went. I bet that you really want to hear about that. Because I was just at it. I was just at his wedding and I was like isn't like fun next Boyfriend Gossen Awesome. No this makes me want to throw up so I was like. I don't want to hear that. Please don't ever mention his name to me. That's PTSD new ICIER sleeve saying like that is triggering that Israel triggering. I was autumn for real wanted to throw up. I couldn't breathe. I was like freaking out like how why why why would somebody we do this. Why would you do this? Why and I was like I don't WanNa fuck I don't? I don't want to know about this his fucking wedding and he was like okay he got like why are you and I was like. Do you seriously not fucking remember. I told you I fucking told you that he raped me and you didn't fucking believe me why the fuck would I want to know about his wedding and then he goes he goes silent for a while and doesn't say anything and I- block him from facebook and I think he either texts me he he finds a way to reach out to me somehow after I think he texted me and he's like just you know like I'm really sorry already for the way I said that because I was drinking a lot at the time so lang yeah like I was just drunk and like I wasn't thinking about like like about that but I seriously don't remember you telling me and I was like I don't need to respond to this block. Uh but it's like truly the thing that sucks the most when you're telling when you tell someone for the first time we're like tell a person for their first time hearing it and you see the look on their face of literally like I just don't want to be having this conversation dot sucks that feelings sucks and you're just like like you start to kind of pedal back on it and you're like okay. Maybe I just won't talk to you about it kind of thing so I mean I think it's so great that like people are now like able to talk about it more and like people believe people which is really awesome because it was not like that and that was like three years like Oh yeah. It's like only in the last seriously two years three or two or three years where it's like okay. Let's all acknowledge it yeah yeah at all. Yeah is seriously it was such a non talk about like such a deep disease yeah aw like you don't want people to know you have a disease yeah yeah. We'll even then like like so many levels right like I didn't want people to it happens to me at all because I thought it made me week which is not true and then I didn't want people to know that I was like so upset from hearing about the fact that this guy stalls normal fuck in life and I'm like on Phase Okay Oh God his wife is probably not I mean honestly I want rescue her where she she's probably in a very unhappy relationship caught. I remember 'cause I was dating him. At the end of high school and I remember he was like we have to get married next here and I was like and I remember being like I don't think so. I don't really want to do that and he was like I can't be not older than twenty one and not be married. My parents were married when they were twenty and I was like okay. We'll book with that. I was like well. That's great for them. I mean I I don't WanNa be married. When I'm nineteen? I'll be twenty one and what am I going to do. Is Why our he's got a lot of problems. He's a lot of problems for real. A lot of problems was I'm so sorry. Thank you yeah. I I just feel like we we should be able to talk about that stuff more and I was like nervous to talk about it. y'All just now. I was like breeze pool but I think he did earlier top. Thanks and thank you for sharing. Your story has seriously people get away with stuff for too long because because the receivers of the behavior too often feel like oh well you know I did this thing and like I did this and it's like not dude. It was not person should act and how they did and this book is a really good example of why we have had to on decades of tangled up run like brain mapping making nice think that it's on us to excuse or justify or make it okay in our own minds minds to the point where you can like fully acknowledge that because I'm sure yet you get taught to take away too much which responsibility you get taught to take any responsibility for your own victimhood yeah and how you respond to that I and on the other side of it too right like how I feel like a lot of people were like well. How can I ever make a move on somebody and it's like with consent Choson with consent and also like you can you can like gopher kiss real hurricane you can directly into it great yeah and the moment they stop you then? Stop Yeah same for you. If you WANNA stop you continue can stop yeah both our kids. This is not a contract yet courts like you if I think the lyrics are it can feel very nice but this this is not a contract and it doesn't mean that more is owed by either party no now but because you get raised on social norms worms and media like the part in this book when Chuck is attacking Jenny caught he sheree doing so much work on his behalf y'all to make it okay. I want to read that part because it does a super tie in with what we're talking about. This is unfortunately a pretty smooth transition into this because chuck doc is and then Jennings reaction to it so he is just enraged. He's in a full range rage. He's grabbing her by the shoulders. He throws her on the ground. He's saying like so with allowed grown. He heaved her down onto the pavement. How she cried right out of the back of her head hit the curb? What are you doing? What are you going to do to me? He stood above her breathing noisily. Is he going to kill me. Jenny wondered this isn't happening. She thought the back of her head throbbing with pain her thoughts swirling in her mind. This isn't Chuck Chuck was always so loveable so funny. What have I done to him? Oh I went. Oh No oh girl she's. What have I done to him? What is he going to do to to me and it like continues she sitting up she feels dizzy? He's like you'll be sorry Jenny and then without looking her he turned and ran tears drawing on her her face her head throbbing. She stood and watched him run. He turned the corner running at full speed. His car was parked under the trees. Blah Blah Blah. She waited until his his car is out of sight and started walking toward home taking long but unsteady strides. He hates me so much. She realized I heard him so much. I hurt him. He hates me. The words repeated and repeated followed. Her home followed her up the stairs to her room followed her into the shower. I hurt him. He hates me. The words followed her into bed wouldn't let her sleep wouldn't let her think about anything else. I hurt him. He hates me she would almost drifted did off when the phone beside her bed ring she reached out her hand and grabbed the receiver. Should she pick it up. Despite the heat of the night she suddenly felt cold all over and then it's fucking Eli calling with his secret phone but like it's crazy how wrong wrong. Her reaction is not wrong. It's just like not true or it's not right. It's not fair to her. Yes it's unfair to her but the writing is so good is that maybe the best. Rl Stein writing. I've ever read no yeah. It's so striking your yeah. I just hates me. I heard him he the fact that like the imagery of the words following her. That's such good writing is this all assigns about the best are else. Starring book is for Best Book. We've ever this. The great American novel is this should we'll just operating becoming we showed in writing or affection but that is really good and it sucks because it I don't know what our Elstein thinks I know. Is this a book about a girl who takes too much responsibility for how the men not even men boys in your life are treating her. I think so I hope so I think so I think I think you can give it a generous reading. That isn't even too generous for what it is. It's a little generous so because she does excuse it away. She doesn't call Cowan anything she ends up with cow. He's not the bad guy. Nobody is the bad guy unless they've actually actually killed someone. That's always the lesson of this these also no one in the book is like Karl. You're being too hard on yourself. I do think the are we supposed to. We don't see sympathize with her. I think he does your but like it's pretty trivial lives in the context of the book not in that moment we'll because he's not the killer APP yeah but it does sort of read a- as though Yeah Jenny you really hurt him and because of you mildly breaking up with him after three weeks of dating him and you are in high school. He's he's gone. He's Gone Mad because you hurt him yeah and so it's really really strange but shit like that is is directly related yeah to how much work doc women put into making these experiences okay and saying that this is a conversation that came out of the babysitter to I that I wasn't even fully thinking we as areas money and I knew I wanted to talk about that yeah but like eight as absolutely the same mindset when it is totally totally right like him so mad guys are you can't push them like that because they can do this and it's like they have to be that way Yuck. It's one hundred percent the the I hurt him. I made him ad. I should've made him so mad. I shouldn't have upset him so much. He team like this if it weren't for that what did I do and this is a point horror book from Nineteen Ninety one yeah and we were reading it Yep yeah and I was eleven yeah. I Dunno read this. Usually I was eight or nine. How old am I am? I I six. I was trying I was nine. I was nine yeah. I don't know if I read this one. Actually I probably didn't read this one until junior high if I did did it all yeah. I don't remember it at all so I don't read it anyway. The buzzer like this unless you're the actual murderer of the book sh which you are not a bad guy yeah. It's fascinating it is let's babysitter to anyway the real real villain looking Secretaria and she like lures shrink. She lures her out there out to the rock quarry because she's it's like. I'm pretty sure it's her so she she thinks it's schindler answers. She feeds the doctor fake information about her going to the rock quarry alone which she actually is going with cow how I will save this for cal she when she is upset he's like what's wrong. Yes she's like. I'm just going to lay it all out for you. Here's what happened to me. The last time I was babysitting I am currently receiving threats and he does nothing but listened to her and believe her and support her even when she's like. I think it's Dr Schindler Yeah. He like great okay. Let's go and do a help..

"I mean it's bad the rent's right yeah because their last like GAW is in the air I this is just she meets Christmas prince of Christmas I mean I think you should watch it because I think you and I would have a lot to talk about with it because I think the villains of it are. Maybe the heroes 'cause they're the best I have heard. I R I read an article about how much all the women who are in all of those hallmark movies love making those Har- hallmark movies but they're fine. Hallmarks are really supportive in violent for women and families and they are very accommodating and obviously they're being valued a lot more than the rest of the industry he would. I mean honestly they're like career status and age yeah like very honestly email very fun to make those movies too like 'cause. That's the thing too it's like not. I think it's not anyone that's like up. Their own ass about like creative vision like this needs no like Stanley Kubrick like assholes over there. I feel yeah. They're wanting to me worrying thing. That makes people good when they watch it yeah like Oh. We're going to make something about the holidays. That's great yeah. Let's do that Yup. It seems fun. Yeah I do one. I would do one. Hell yeah do one yeah you'd right and do one. I I challenge you to make me an offer that I could refuse. Would you show it would be in one for sure right it like hey you have an opening tomorrow. Look at your tomorrow. There's an opening my calendar watch and be like Oh let me work it out with my current employer. You can take a they would let you for sure okay. A day can take a day off to do homework where we may be like. Yeah please by all means yeah wonderful wonderful. Would you yeah no. I think there are like people will that there are people that are very bright. Robert Deniro makes garbage. I now actually will hallmark movie. It's also really interesting exist exist. Those really interesting like I remember when I was first first first starting out trying to like do comedy and stuff and like I wasn't fully trying to do acting at but I was trying to comedy and I remember talking to someone I went to high school with that. I used to be like best friends with in high school aw and I forgot how judgy people can be because I feel like usually most struggling actors when they're talking the other like if someone's okay I got this. I got this spot on this thing. Everyone's like Oh man. That's great good for you but remember she was like Oh yeah just I don't I remember just feeling so demoralized after this meet up with her because she was because I was hungry I wanted to try to act and whatnot and she was like Doc. Oh just don't get trapped into this trap of like the guy just went on a I forgot what it was at the time before Tinder date with a guy and he was like bragging about how he got a PAP though business national spot and like and I was like dude that's a good fucking can spot. Tell Ya like hell yeah. I hope that they use that campaign for years to come. Yeah I bless him. I wish him well yeah unless he was like also a Dick about it sure but I think she probably like she. She's mentioned Marshall Period and I think that like I don't know I didn't realize people why used to be a lot more judgy. I would've been with move whom are moving yeah. I think I would have been like that. You know what all it takes to get you you to be a lot less. Judgy is to actually try to truly try to do something and realize how hard it is yeah and also look into Y. You have such a strong emotion about something yeah because like for me. I'm sure it was. I'm not like other girls. Syndrome drome yeah for sure yeah or like the only art is high art which like Shir commercial probably is not going to be like the most. It was amazing thing you've ever seen who cares what who fucking cares. It's money you gotta pay the Bills Dude. I would love to book National Abysmal Spot Yep please. He's I mean I'd love to at some like I would love it. If at some point in my career could say no to commercials based on the company or product like if it's like cruelty freer made by child place in Indonesia but right like when you're starting out there's kind of no such thing as selling out at this in our generation yeah anyway yeah yeah. I I mean we. We've talked about this before but we're like it used to be like oh mayor don't like give your to stick like morale. Hello Hello and it's like all one hundred percent so out to the man while I vote for Bernie Sanders beyond capitalism exists I I wanNA fuck and try to take as much money while fighting it from the wind will side. We'll also like yeah. That's the thing I'm like hi. This is the system. That's built yeah so I'm GONNA I need to make a living. I'm constantly about gaming. Whatever system is there and then but I'm going to try try to change it through my voting yeah you know I don't like it yeah but I'm not about to starve. That's the the problem I gotta pay my rent. You know are these jobs are few and far between now and also it's kind of like Yada yeah and also it's kind of like you know you need to pay like make money from stuff that you may not agree with everything about it. so that you can basically weekly fund the work that you think matters you know because like you know a lot of people were like oh you want to tell stories about people that are marginalized or whatever then you should just write something. I'm like okay. I WANNA okay I will but also I need money so I'm GonNa go out on commercial. I'm going to want that have to business commercials so that way I can get to that point yeah so that my voice Loyd is something that's loud enough that I can tell that story basically when you watch reality bites she should have chosen Ben Stiller and not Ethan Hawke never saw that March that movie and I defy you to look at it any other away. We'll isn't it also like when people talk about like watching rent again as an adult and you're like fuck. y'All paired rent to your black friends yeah yeah I take the fucking buzzfeed job. Yes you need a job while you're saying no to this job. You're supposed friend Benny you. You are not paying him rent. Pay Your friend the rat own him. This is like fuck monster. Like what are you constance. Wu like Snee- do you remember this was the fresh got renewed and she is like fuck. The sucks I get that here's a thing I have it in your heart. That was real blame. Do not read that sure yeah. You want to do other projects. Can you don't want to be tied down to something that makes you can't do other stuff. Yeah that sucks in your heart but there are people who wait by that fucking phone for a call like one of my friends is on that show and she awaits she like if the phone rang she's available. She's ready to come in to to to to do something for that show and so I look at it like I don't know it just seems on don't don't say disrespect the thing that made you yeah yeah and also it's not even like she's i. It's not even like she's stuck being on fucking two and a half men or something. It's a show that is one of the only successful shows for Asian people to have come out there. It was what got her to be considered for crazy rich Asians it's just to me it's fine think about it in your heart and your friends complain about it with your friends over the all expenses paid trip that you ought to to pay for your friends to go on because of that money that fucking show complain about it on a wine trip to your friends. Yes don't tweet about it because it makes you look really fucking messy Esi. It was a moment of weakness yeah. It sucks. Honestly your mark in rent. Hate your rent. Yeah you gotta Pay Your Rent. Come on man yeah yeah takes needs. The money doesn't need it but he's owed it out it. That's the other nearly going to stick it to eh but like your friends involved. Don't fuck your friend over just because you don't like who he married. Also you killed her dog also like held her dog uh when you Mrs specifically just Mark Yep specifically guitarist who is the guitarist guitarist who is the guitarist and then Janin's like whatever. I don't think her art is any good but fine all right right. The play is not good. It is a good songs are good. The story is hack series. Not Hack story is tone deaf. I am really story is torn looking up the wrongdoings here on and guitarist from rent. That's not a good thing to try and Google because then it's like. Do you want to Qatar. I we've got mark. We've got Benny. We've got Janine. We've got a Janine or Joanne. You're to win Maureen Mark Ayman Rain on how Angel Angel Joanne Benjamin Roger Tom. It's all it's garage Rogers Guitarist Roger. Let's see depressed. I mean his girlfriend did kill herself. Yes Roger just struggling just Martian which does Martin. He's just. He's the friend roommate of Mark Mark like sucks. You have to pay rent be paying rent mark specifically mark no one else offs we mean to your friend. That's the problem. It's like when your friends are involved. You should do right by them. I also like Angel I support you you. You're an important trans character in the show. It's not like funny that the dog type. I just don't find that funny. The dog died. I don't like it it could be. It's funny when people are like Oh and then like the animal died animals not involved like I don't carry that you don't like the person who owns the animal yeah I I tales like honestly when I read all those characters names I was did not who any of them were. I the details of rent. escaped me except for that. I'm like like you should pay your rent. The songs are so good sounds really good. I I do really like the songs Oh yeah but so it turns out that the Secretary Aref that's what we're talking about. The secretary is the one who is like calling the owners like and she's like ooh which of course is not fucking him girl stop and then the fake out of her like finding you is like little homemade phone that he made and when he's on the phone and he'd like caller and stuff making prank calls to other people I guess yeah and it was sad when he was like my friends ends and I was like girl. You already said that you don't have friends yeah sad yep Scott to friends yeah. Oh that was something else I was going to say. It's clearer lady lie wants just needs boundaries and discipline when the friends get there and he's like who said they could come over and she goes. Do you have a problem with my friends is coming over here and it just like shut him up immediately also I like how what's seconds name the guy that has a crush owner owner Rick Rick's great with kids like surprise new crush on her. Oh my God I believe because she brought cal to tennis. I know you've seen a guy. I've never wanted you more. Also I don't like when people try to push on Youtube hard about how good with kids or dogs they are like. I find that if I do that immediately proven wrong yeah. That's the problem is when people are located or dog knows yeah like I have just Brecht where I have experienced a lot. The people are like okay so like my dog is like a little bit nervous around people like don't rush them and people like I'm like really good with dogs and then they rushed the dog dog and the dog growls at them and then they're like Oh and it's like you're clearly not go with dogs because not all dogs. You've clearly you've just got one that Keller justed dogs before yeah I mean you've met like golden retrievers that grew up like in cotton candy fields like not the average dog yes because most people that are good with dogs no that you let them come to you Ding Ling and the same with name and the kid he's socal with kids and he tries to talk to Eli About Sports and Eli like ignoring him but alight light does like the girl Claire Yeah Oh my God and then I declare his she falls downstairs gets a concussion and they have to call an ambulance and it's like Whoa did Eli do it but like we know that no no I don't we.

"Purpose for the movie. Maybe he did choose it on purpose is for the man isn't based on a true story it is isn't it is maybe. Rl Stein was just like paying homage to to Schindler and all the people say were to say in in much the same way that he is trying to help save JEM Jenny from her trauma. Okay so that's beautiful. It's the connection anyway she calls Dr Embarrassed Gurney on her last name name which like go girl he would take your last name but also how do you slip yeah so especially because this is ninety three. It was was very rare for a mandatory woman's last name. This is ninety one ninety one. I'm sorry so Y- The amount of mental gymnastics through she's like and then when we marry he will be Dr Greenie also Gurney Gurney so that moment I was like she's killer what it should have been was was. She should have called him like some kind of pet name she if his name was John or something Oh Johnny Yeah I mean Dr Schindler something something but like two straight up. Give Him your last name. Wonder he funny. I wonder if our Elstein was like worried that that would just make her seem to familiar and not crazy crazy because I feel like he wanted to make her crazy. I mean should have done. She's greedy. He could've done more smaller things like that. Though yeah armaments were Derek where they were weird I started noticing too that like the doctor like had his hand on her shoulder and then like when he you brought her out into the in front of Mrs Gurney Nascar any he like pulled his hand away. I noticed that and I was like ooh. That's interesting detail. Think about about it. Yeah I noticed it and I was like I wonder what that means like. Does it mean he's in her because if so that's a pretty good that's a pretty good detail to put in for a red herring hiring yeah but and also serves to work with like if he knows her medical history. Here's the thing unprofessional if view are Dr Therapist your patient you know has obsessive thoughts about are you. You don't hire them to show your San Jose Reyes and you let them all right. Here's the thing don't don't hire a former patient altogether. No it's too it's too much and then if there are incidents let her go yeah yeah also like he should have put that together way quicker especially if she had a history of that. We'll know anything about her like He. It is a big indicator that she's bat shit if he goes was the tapes are missing. I think Miss Kurnia has probably been tormenting Jenny. I better get my butt down to the rock quarry so that's like a crazy leap type but if that's the leap that he takes immediately then you know that something is wrong with this woman he's like Oh. Also he like obvious answer. He also is like I should have seen it sooner. So that means he's been ignoring size. Yes also like the word tormenting. It's very funny to me. She truly been tormenting pineal booking crazy. It's crazy so same thing has been happening to Jenny. She's sitting a new kid stocks. Oh also he spoke nuts back that lake. We're like Oh yea. It's not him in the end. I'm like no but like let's talk about because he's in dire need of different parents hugely disturbed yes but all right before I forget here's so here's her old church donny from Donnie to Eli so she's telling Dr Schindler about. I did think it was a really good narrative tool the going back and forth to therapy and a really uh-huh cap book one to have it be in a therapy session and I mean I know that like I duNNo. I thought it was pretty good. Well I assume that pre fear. Street are all starting to have more time so busy during straight and so the writing was a little more deliberate yeah and measured and Tono a correct yeah. I think the therapy sessions well fierce treated. There's nothing wrong with fear street. Tone is just we're not getting any like hi my name's Jenny and anyway when I looked like hey yeah we'll the I like the therapy sessions in that they were really a really cool device MHM like they served so many purposes. They're really cool device for us. They also set up the like. Honestly that doctor was a pretty good red herring. He didn't Act Act inappropriately. No but still you know you think maybe I don't know and like the hand on her shoulder. I don't know what that is. I don't know why he didn't think about it because that's pretty nothing well. The body was says it was like also like him removing his hand once they came into the lobby Hawaii Z. hiding that he's putting his hand on her shoulder. I thought it was just basically like well. You're out here and so now I will be taking my hand back and you can't help it. Maybe read into it too much like maybe he described it Russia. I'm sure he had to so they mystery torment Jan so that you the reader would that look back on it and go. Oh that's what that was more thought out I yeah because it wasn't so much the hand as Miss Gurneys reaction to the hand or he gets very all business he gets on yeah. That's the thing it's it's not the hand being there. It's the quick removing of the hand and like acting very like different like must've been like Oh fuck. I don't want my ain same receptionist to think I'm in love with my patient. My receptionist exception is that I never should have higher no and who I definitely has done this before yes but for some reason so this is her description to doctor Schindler of Donnie. She's telling us the whole plot of book one well. I took this babysitting babysitting job twice a week with this adorable little boy named Donny Donny Hagen Donny had the most amazing white blonde hair you ever saw he was so cute and the two of us just hit it off right away Jenny Jenny move on with your life away. This is two months is a child yeah. He was six six yeah. Oh you're freaking hands through. His hair is going to be a heartbreaker one day. It was not okay Lindsey now. He's nothing seven that's true. She should look him up yeah. No it was gross and then along the way that she is like allies is like nothing like Johnny Donny Donny Donny. Let's find ally you Ariz nuits but really it's not his fault allies parents blow parent. They suck their okay. It's like that episode of twilight zone where the little boy can control everything with his mind. Everybody's being very deferential to him because they don't want to want want him to like disappear their mouths yeah so they're acting you're around ally simply because he gets grumpy also like the the way that they try to like like prep. What's her name Jenny the way the train and the way they try to that's why you call him Johnny Yeah 'cause I got it mixed up the way they try to prep Jenny Golic? Don't fucking she's like do whatever he fucking says. Jenny liked just do not and I'm like dude. He's like but then he's disturbed though right he's like really disturbed. Well here's disturbed because he is desperately seeking attention disciplined. I'm using begging for it. He's just fagging Nohara said and if I want Ed I mean the plan and I mean the the thing that feels like a little freak clearly. We'll told all these things and he got freaked out by it any isolates himself at about the like horror movie movie stuff though I think that that is eating he's trying to get attention. It's just trying to get attention. He's trying to get a rise out of anyone. Stupid parents treat him like an adult because I I was afraid it was going to be like the dangerous son type thing where it's like. Oh this child yeah is with is past help. That's certainly how it's being set yup so that allies a creepy little red herring which is fun. Yeah could've been executed in a more fun way instead. You're just like this kid socks. I know it's not him yeah. I knew it wasn't too much. He sucked way too much. okay Lilla Lua. Here's Eli Janney saw that he had a narrow intense face like his father's topped with thick blond hair which obviously hadn't been brushed that day he had his mother's others dark eyes which were even more startling on him since his skin was so fair and the rest of his features were so pale she has dirk dramatic is by the way it was said he he was wearing a turtle power t shirt over green spandex by turtle hours. That's adorable. That's very cute and he says he has an Iq of one eighty. He built built him. He built his own computer. which isn't the craziest achievement I've ever heard yeah I mean and he did it without a kit right? so that's kind of impressive well. I'm pretty sure he just bought a computer and then added more memory to it. If I remember remember really because bills describing Ah I've built a computer exactly but I don't know but it wasn't it more difficult to build a computer in ninety three no okay I built this computer. He said ignoring her joke. You did you built it. I really am impressed. Jenny exclaimed moving closer to take a better look for my kit Elisa from he'd I modified it. I put it in a graphics card and extra memory wowed Johnny said leaning over Oh him to stare at the Monitor screen sorry but big whoop yeah I mean I guess that's kind of impressive back. You no in ninety-three when like you couldn't just look up how to you know I I built my computer from looking up how to do it. Do Check you out. That's the thing it's from looking it up but like I feel like he ninety one there you couldn't do that he could also it came from a kit yeah and truly all he did was add more memory and es which actually is not that hard isn't it likes removing. Yes so like yeah you can little play on inside the like yeah motherboard yeah I mean I did I could here's the thing I don't know what it was like to build a computer in ninety-three all I know anyway. I'm sorry what are the cause of Schindler's list. It's haunting me. I don't it was like to build a computer in ninety one. I think you had to be a specific type of person to WanNa do that. Whereas now it's much more mainstream well the real? The real real issue is that doesn't make you a genius it makes you interested or it makes you a nerve like it makes you makes you interested in computer. `puter doesn't make you a genius to have done it. Yeah and that's the thing he made it from a kit I mean how old is he ten. What's the craziest thing in to do in your now and the parents it's like when you know when you meet people and they're like my kid is a genius and you made the kid and you're like well? He's just precocious. He's precocious. He's interested in computers and I'm sure he does have a high. IQ Oh my God but also IQ tests associate total noble said I'm sure he gets very good grades. I'm sure he has trouble relating to kids his age however yeah he built it from a cat he is not the kid from twilight zone. Give this.

We're doing public domain theater again for Patriot on which is what you said but in different order well. It's important to make sure that you that we get everybody to understand people that like to hear the like now in first and then the verb and then we'd like to hear the versus the now yeah and so you have to accommodate those people and also like with children's programming. It's good to to repeat like repetition is how you learn yeah and we are as you know why children's programming for children you know what thing I don't like what okay mystery spot in Santa Cruz was awesome. Um that are restaurant now. What is that it's a weird place like defies gravity okay? Oh one of those places they have one in Calico ghost town too and there's second one yeah like it's like you know you stand in your tilted and stuff anyway. I don't remember they do this thing where they all. The tour guides have like canned jokes that they have to say which is fine. I actually thought it was good. she liked did it with the right amount of like I'm over it but not too much and she was like a very cute like eighteen eighteen year old girl doing it. It was great but there's this thing that they have to do where they like. They say like say milk fi or taste say silk five times the the person says silk five times and like what does a cow drink and you're supposed to say water but the silk supposed to fuck you up so that you say milk but also cows drink milk also. I didn't have have to say it five times to immediately think milk yeah. There's also another one where it's like. What are you putting the toaster toast? Let's see that one is true true red you put bread yeah unless you WANNA little hockey puck put chosen. They won't get a little hockey super us up the roof of my mouth I mean if you had not said head silk and you said right now to me Wednesay. What do cows drink? I probably would have said milk but they'd be drink. Milk adult cows drink water her baby doc that is very true the environments for them. It's four for us. You know it's not for us I during sometimes why were they having a drink. I absolutely during actually I'm trying to switch show. I like milk a lot. This is fascinating yeah. But why were they. Having you say that at the Mr me it was like they were making a little kid do it but what does that have to do. With the mystery spots tenuous he was at best. They're having the show there were supposed to have a kid that was like observing game switch places and so she's like I need to make make sure that you're paying attention and so she did that and he was just like GAM- yeah but the kid actually was really cute because is he says he did. She did that first thing the milk thing and he kind of like he was really little he was like four or as little yeah he was really little news five but he's also very cute like when we were they were asking for people of certain heights and she's like okay. We need someone that's like five five and he kept having an and then they need someone that's six feet tall. He's six feet tall and then so he was very precocious then his face kind of like when people laughed with the milk thing he was like and then she's like what are you put it in the toaster and he goes bread and she was like yeah I'm like gave them big hyphen cute but I didn't like the milk thing because technically they do well. I hope she gets fired tired. I hope she gets scandal. I hope she gets canceled. What mystery spot you're fucking camp canceled stall? You've been canceled for child abuse so all of this leads up to the fact that we read babies children and speaking of children yeah else dines babysitter to do you want to read the back of the book and then we'll do a very brief recap of one and because it barely it's basically this book but different Yeah okay. You'RE GONNA. I'm GonNa need your help with crapping one. We'll we'll I will rely on each other as usual. I think that I will I will be pulling you down into the depths. I'd I don't think I get crazy. Okay Ready Yup. He's back Jack. Oh that's funny 'cause Mike just walked in and I said he's back. I was talking about the book he's back. Johnny's just last babysitting job nearly killed her for real but she's a survivor. She's getting over it. The crazy guy who was after her is gone. She even got a new baby sitting job then the phone rings when she answers she hears a familiar voice of voice from the past from the grave high bids back. I didn't remember him calling a baby. I was just about to say the same thing sounds to sexual very to be dad. Not I mean it's one thing that Don with they exit on high so the hottest hottest six year olds in the world. That's the only thing I remember from that book. Is that Asia you meet to that kid here all right so here's book one. Jenny gets a job. Maybe sitting across town and it's a little boy named Donnie. He's like six and again in this one. They mention like she's. She thinks about him like he's an ex boyfriend. Who like yeah is the the one that got away? She's like he was so angelic and like perfume most hear hear me the book to read. What is in here we yes we go on and on about the creepy -ness of Jenny in the first baby sitter but where okay so what happens she babysits this six year old kid in Donnie? She's weird about him. While this is happening she is like starting to see a guy named chuck who's like such a jokester and he and then she's getting weary mask the clown mask outside at her and and then is a completely different person in this book and he's like joke arm so funny and this says Alltel no show and and she's getting calls when she's babysitting and I probably at home too. I don't really remember I guess High Babes naming or whatever I forget what he says and it turns the person stocking her is actually the dad of the kid because and he's just been like out to get babysitters because awhile ago donning had a sister and he an sister died. Don't remember how I'm not even sure if they tell us because the babysitter like wasn't watching it or something yeah but he blames her and it wasn't necessarily her fault. We don't actually think we do know it wasn't her fault but he blames he blessed. She goes downstairs and he's like you should have been watching her and like Washington pusher so yeah it was him he she finds all these clippings about babysitters. Oh Yeah Klein served clippings knows that she's figured it out she she very stupidly still accepts a ride home from him. Oh Yeah and he drives her to Iraq. Corey like one does in these books. Is this where we rock rock quarries. When we talk about Corey's Fokker announced ten minutes we were trying to figure out what they knew and it turns out they get dirt for cement purposes breath while and you can use rocks for those things that block the breakwater member? We learned that now is it called like Oh oh yeah drip drip Kevin like that anyway go back and listen to minimize that are one you guys and go up quarry. He's like he's he's like about to rush at her to push her in and she just like sidesteps and he goes into the Corey and dies and Chuck had like I dunno like suspected they were going there and brought the police anyway that was the end of that and so we start this book book Giannis talking to her therapist about her trauma which is interesting because the characters don't usually like except that they've experienced this very traumatic thing enough to go to therapy. No they're usually just like school started back to school. my friends are like why don't you get over it yup but no she's in therapy Yeah Sean therapy sluggish sheet and they only go to therapy if our Elstein wants them to go to therapy yeah for plot reasons yes and it is a very big plot reason in this book for two reasons books fucking crazy yeah a not for anything that happens but for the end well. Here's the thing I suspected the secretary from the beginning. Something was very weird with how many compliments she gives Jenny will and I was noticing typically the one part where she heard him as Miss Gurney yet and she accidentally calls Dr. You're schindler which is a choice memorable name at this point. Yes probably not when this book was written. Let's see let's take a peek I'm I'm like almost sure ninety one when Schindler's List and due to ninety three maybe later ninety ninety three December fifteenth nineteen ninety-three there you go so yeah. He did not choose Schindler on purpose for the movie. Maybe he did choose it on purpose is for the man isn't based on a true story it is isn't it is maybe..

"Nine Stine looks down at the man and says how's your sales in my view of salesmen I'm sorry but I do think that's funny personally I never earned one dollar selling anything but I did still concepts I did sell the brands are represented I did sell me who I am I've always had to be a sales moral selling ourselves every day we want to influence people that selling for sale is an interesting concept yes but only in selling has been around since man has walked the earth Michael Gould the former CEO Bloomingdale said on the show when I S. them about the future of retail what do you think and he said as early as the ancient Greeks they went to the market to buy we must make the market vibrant and interesting shopping is an experience we are a culture a species who bodies who consumes that's all your life and the word sale or for sale or on soon is a cold to owns question about a sale word sales a quarrel took arms no the word fashion is in the title of the show so I don't think it's a leap to consider a sale.

Collateral Damage Of The Trade War, Farmers Want Chinese Market Reopened

"Support for NPR and the following message come from Dulles International Airport with the highest on time takeoff percentage of any airport on the east coast. I a d means I'm already departing more at fly Dulles dot com slash fast. We have a deeper look at American farmers affected by the trade war with China, it's well known that soybean farmers of lost their biggest market. What's less understood? Is that the whole US pharma Connie was directed overseas until now here's Amy mayor of Iowa public radio. Let's look at farm trade in three acts, act, one oversupply and politics going back at least late nineteenth century, US, farmers have sold much of what they've grown abroad. That's according to historian. Joe Anderson of mount Royal university in Calgary. Now, he says after World War Two a couple of changes, set the stage for today's global marketplace agricultural policy that's part of this. There's technology. As part of this synthetic fertilizer, and other advances meant farmers were producing well beyond the domestic demand for crops, such as corn, and soybeans, and in Washington lawmakers decided to marry surplus to foreign policy post World War, Two period. The United States started using food, and commodities in general, as a tool in the Cold War. The end government directed sales to other countries, the US department of agriculture and many commodity groups combined forces to open offices overseas and sponsor trade missions, whoa freeze one hundred Vietnam and the Philippines. The central Iowa farmer. Denny freest serves on the Iowa. Corn board and has made several trips to Asia corps before being grower producer. These markets are very to everything that I, I need to create demand for the product we grow because global economy, these big eat a lot of soybeans, and then some of them get sold abroad, but what happened. When demand slumps that brings us to act to why deform or stick with the same crops world. Rural farming today, takes a lot of capital as a boy free as never wrote on a tractor with a cab, but five decades into this business. The one on this John Deere is quipped with four different monitors with all he's invested in land equipment and technology. He can't just wake up one day and decide to grow something else, or soils above very well to growing corn. Soybeans we have the markets for them, and we have the machinery setup for it. So he's dedicated to attracting overseas buyers in addition to Asian countries he and other farmers have there is on Africa, the Middle East and Europe. Already this year, the European Union is buying more from the US than it used to up Pesonen is with the main lobbying voice for EU agriculture imports from the United States increased by fourteen percent mainly due to soybean imports. Even though the robust trade relationship between the US and EU has a long history, Pesonen says it's not immune to impacts from the crowd. Trade war between the US and China. It's quite worrying for us because agriculture is usually one of the first casualties, assessor dispute, and it quite often kind of collateral, damage, US, farmers feel like they're the collateral damage right now, while a second promise bailout could help some many hope instead for a trade resolution that revives the Chinese market for their products now act, three China's too big to lose Chinese demand is huge. That's how farmers came to be so focused on it says Mike Stine hook of the soy transportation coalition, and that paid off swimmingly for a number of years. And now of a sudden due to geopolitical tension that forecast is changed dramatically meaning until China and the US reach a truce in the trade war, there's going to be lots of stress throughout farm country for NPR news.
