President Biden spent more than three hours meeting with China's president today ahead of the G 20 summit, CBS Steven portnoy is traveling with the president now in Bali. The president said one of his goals going into the meeting was to ensure that he and Xi Jinping don't misunderstand one another. He says he informed the Chinese leader that if North Korea continues its provocations, the U.S. might ramp up its military presence in the region. We'd be more up in the face of China, but it wouldn't be because of China, because of what was going on in North Korea. The White House hopes Beijing uses its influence with Pyongyang to stave off another North Korean nuclear test. Here at home, a setback for mister Biden's student debt relief program. "John fetterman to defeat Doctor Oz, we are hearing now that tight Senate race, the Democrats now have a good chance of possibly retaining control of the Senate. CBS News correspondent Steve Keith and Steven portnoy joined pollster Monica McDermott to discuss more of the morning's developments. Now on the house side of the capitol, the picture is a bit murky. I think it's fair to say at this point, is that a red wave has not materialized. Certainly not a red tsunami. CBS News still sees the house leaning in the Republicans direction. But if there's going to be a Republican majority in the House, they need 218 votes. The Republicans will fall far short of some of the historic gains that we have seen the out party make in a first president's president's first midterm. For example, 12 years ago, in 2010, under Barack Obama, Republicans gained 63 House seats that year. In 2018, under Donald Trump Democrats gained 41 House seats. It remains to be seen how many seats the Republicans are going to pick up here. But it's probably not going to be. Anywhere near 60 or 40. Maybe in the low two dozens, if that many. And it's not clear because we have so many races still outstanding, Steve. Stephen portnoy, thanks. Let's take a quick dive into some of the exit polling information CBS News pollster Monica McDermott is here. Demographics. Tell us about that. Well, what we're seeing is that the national House race is leaning towards Republicans and a lot of that has to do with the electorate as it looks right now. You've got low democratic turnout this time around, only 33% of the electorate are Democrats compared to 37% in the past two elections. There's also a higher income electorate this year in 2018 the last midterm, 33% of voters were earning over a $100,000. This year, we're seeing 37% of the electorate earning that much. You've got more gun owners this year, 46% in 2018 compared to 53% now, also first time voters who have traditionally broken for Democrats this year are favoring Republican House

"WTO P, the boarding after this Wednesday, when all is said and done, the Republicans are expected to retake the house, but their majority may not be very big. So what does that mean for California GOP congressman Kevin McCarthy, who very badly wants to be House speaker. CBS News correspondent Steve kathan discusses that with CBS News White House correspondent, Steven portnoy. The very first thing he has to do is get himself elected speaker. And that requires party unity and discipline. And it's not a certainty. So that's the first challenge that the Republican leader in the House will have to overcome. If the majority is thin, if Kevin McCarthy only has a couple of votes to lose, well, you could see a potential of a couple of right-wing Republicans saying that they're going to withhold their support for whatever reason they might have. And perhaps you'd have to go to more than one ballot. This is all very speculative, but it's something to keep in mind if the majority for the Republicans is narrow in the house. And it's certainly not out of the question, Stephen, that's Donald Trump, might speak up about something like that. And get behind somebody else and start talking about that. Anything can happen in politics today, and that goes on the left as well as on the right. But in particular, there's a concern that's been expressed by Republican sources to our colleagues here at CBS News about the possibility of a real headache for Republican leadership if the majority in the House is narrow. Now look, the Democrats have had a very slim majority in the house too. And despite that, they've been able to pass a list of achievements that the president has tried to point to as he is argued to the country why they should elect Democrats in a House and Senate. And yet, there are at times certain hassles that the democratic leadership have had to take on and face if they have within the progressive caucus. Some members who feel as though the leadership is not doing enough for the bait or for particular constituencies or for the party as a whole. It's the same dynamic on the right. It's just that Republicans have a record now. I remember I covered it on Capitol Hill about 8 years ago where they made a ran John Boehner out of the Congress and it was not clear who was going to succeed him. Ultimately, the party rallying around Paul Ryan, and

"Confirmed that text messages from around the time of the attack had apparently been deleted. It happened despite requests from federal investigators and members of Congress that they be preserved. At one 34 President Joe Biden has tested positive for the coronavirus. This morning CBS News White House correspondent Steven portnoy with details. The president tested positive in a letter from his physician, doctor Kevin O'Connor says that the president was tested as part of his routine screening with an antigen test. The result was confirmed with a PCR test. The White House says he's experiencing mild symptoms, runny nose, fatigue, a dry cough. The president began a course of pax lovid and The White House physician says that because he is twice boosted, the expectation is that he will quote respond favorably as most maximally protected patients do. So that's the word. The president was supposed to travel to Pennsylvania and Delaware. He was supposed to give a speech and in Wilkes Barre to talk about his response to crime, those plans have been scrapped as well as a planned stop in Philadelphia for a closed fundraiser. He was supposed to go to Wilmington for the weekend, that's been scrapped in The White House says he will work in isolation until he tests negative. In addition to all of those travel events, there have been some high profile visitors to The White House recently. What is The White House saying about him coming into contact with many people? There's no doubt the president has had a number of close contacts over the last several days. He last tested negative on Tuesday, and the president traveled to southeastern Massachusetts right near the border with Rhode Island. He gave a speech there on the environment. He was photographed alongside the local congressman who wrote on Air Force One with him. The First Lady is in Detroit and says that she is a close contact and has so far tested negative. So there will be a number of people close to the president who will likely wind up going into testing regimen. They likely will wear masks for a period of time. What's interesting to note is that The White House has been bracing for this moment. It was months ago that The White House former press secretary Jen Psaki said publicly that it's really not a question of whether the president will get COVID, but when. And the Psaki was asked at the time whether it would be seen as a failure of either protocols or policy if the president were to get COVID and Psaki simply said no, it would not be a failure. It would just be the fact. And the fact is the president has finally tested positive for COVID
