"And then if it goes wrong and think I misses his spot and the ball happens to make its way to the outfield, will you have a great set of outfielders too. So I think it's really different for a team to say, we have identified what we think to be a proactive strength, whatever the strength may be. And we have guys who we think we can maximize to that and we are confident that it is going to result in outs or runs depending on the situation. And so we are comfortable having an approach that is a little bit different versus saying, I don't like fastballs at the top of the zone. That's magic, right? Like it's a different, I think that it really depends on, I don't know, I'm making a process argument. But I think the process by which you arrive at the roster composition you have really makes a difference. And then I think you have to have a willingness to adapt to the information and feedback you're getting from the performance of your players and you have to be staffed such that you can distinguish signal and noise in that, but you need to be willing to say, oh, we tried a bunch of stuff, and we thought it would be great, and it turns out it was garbage. So we got to go a different way. And I think if you're willing to be adaptable and look at the information that is, you know, that your team is generating and tweak or maybe course correct. That's fundamentally different than being like, you know, we're going to make every guy pitch the exact same way because that's the cardinal's way and even in the face of it not working. We're still going to make them do it because, you know, that's how we do things. That is a very different philosophy than being like, we think that like, yeah, fastballs at the top of the zone, that's great, but we're going to go with a bunch of sinker guys because we have this great infill defense and brought it. Yeah, you should tailor the strengths of your staff to the strengths of your defense to a certain extent. If you are graced with a great defense as the Cardinals have been for quite a while now, then yeah, it plays to your strengths. More so than other teams, right? So you could say that to market inefficiency, I suppose. If some team has a terrible defense, then they probably shouldn't be willing to go and get this pitcher. They won't be as valuable to that team because those ground balls won't pay dividends the way that they will for the Cardinals. And so maybe the Cardinals could get some value by going and getting a Steven Matz or something, which does not mean that they shouldn't also or couldn't also be bidding on some maybe higher ceiling arms that I'm sure that many of their fans would have been happy to have them go after. Could you vote? It's weird that Kyle Gibson pitches for the Phillies. Seems like a weird choice. Yeah. Matt's these days he's not even really an extreme ground power or anything. I don't think. So maybe he's not even the best example necessarily. But I think that you will get there starting rotation depth through the lack thereof and some of the pictures they did not sign or were not involved in trying to sign seemingly over this off season. I think there was some question in some frustration about that. So the fact that you have a great defense does that mean that you can not also get someone who goes and miss bats and they will be good for you too. Yeah. It turns out that they still do just fine. Yeah. But I think you're right. You don't want to get locked into this one size fits all organizational philosophy at least when it comes to a pitching approach. I guess the pirates would be the example of a team that maybe took that too far supposedly in the past several seasons during the race searage era where they kind of had their thing of pitching inside or throwing certain pitches, not throwing certain pitches, organizational emphases like that whole idea of like, we don't let pictures and art organization throw this type of pitch or we try to teach everyone this type of pitch. That makes me suspicious, not that I'm saying that's exactly what the cardinals are doing here. But that kind of thing, like, okay, you can recognize certain aspects of performance that you think are undervalued or easier to teach or maybe with the personnel you have in place. You know, we have a strength. We are able to teach this thing really effectively, and so we will stress that, but then what happens when Dave Duncan retires or when suddenly race your ridges magic doesn't seem to be working so well because the game changed or maybe he wasn't as much of a genius as everyone thought in the first place. I mean, you can get yourself into trouble if you model your whole organizational approach after one guru, who may or may not be as great as they're cracked up to be or may just move on. There's a lot of turnover in Major League Baseball. So I think it pays to just evaluate each pitcher on their merits and say, well, what would work best for this picture and maybe throwing a sinker low in the zone makes sense for them and it'll work well with our defense, but maybe with this guy, we want to have him fire these high spin four steamers up in the zone, whatever it is. So I think if you had all one type that would make me raise an eyebrow, perhaps. So it could be either. It could be that you have picked up on something that you can do better than anyone else or that you think is out there for the taking, or it could be that you have gotten overly married to a certain philosophy and you're not thinking beyond that. The cardinals have been pretty successful on the whole. So that's something. I don't think Cardinals fans can be too upset with how they have performed over the past decade or two. So that's something, but that doesn't mean they couldn't be behind the curve in some respects as well. Yeah, and I think we see successful organizations that have different philosophies about this stuff or their understanding of what is like an easy to develop, trait in a picture versus something that is a more immutable characteristic might vary, or it might be the same, but how they weight those things can kind of vary or you have orgs that are like, yeah, we'll just develop velocity in everybody. We can just develop below if we need it and you have works that are just really keen on strike throwing even if it comes with lower below..

"Yeah, I am used to extensions like this being signed like right before opening day and in spring training. I'm sure that there are precedents for deals being signed at this point in the off season two, but it does seem like more than usual. So congrats to Franco for cashing in and securing his future and not having to worry about his contract for more than a decade now. There's no trade clause by the way, but if he is traded at some point, he does get a bonus that kicks in. So sweeten the deal a little bit. Soften the pain of parting. So that is Franco and also the starting pitcher market is moving. Yeah. Lots of activity here. So since we last spoke, the Giants brought back a couple of their guys, Anthony Dixon and Alex wood, and there have been conversations with others, but there is also a big cardinals deal, the cardinals signed Stephen mats for four years and 44 million, which was way over the MLB trade rumors estimate of 27 million. So I guess we should have drafted the over on Stephen Metz. Yeah. Necessarily see that coming. Steve Cohen is upset. He is tweeting, the mets have missed out again, but the Cardinals got a guy who is not the sexiest acquisition. I suppose, but he's been dependable aside from the pandemic season. He's been the same guy. I guess you would describe him as solid. If you have a 150 to a 160 innings, which is not nothing in this day and age and at a time when even the pennant winners are running on fumes pitching staff wise by the end of October and Matt's has been pretty good, he was pretty successful for the Blue Jays in the meat grinder of the AL east. So now he gets to go to the comparatively soft and el central and pitch in front of the friendly cardinals. Defense. So not overpowering, not incredible peripherals, even for a sinker ball guy, I guess he doesn't have the hugest ground ball rates. But seems like a pretty decent fit of player and team. And I don't know if the cardinals are done or whether they will make more upgrades to this rotation, but that's a start. Yeah. What is it with me going back to the northwest and the mets have a weird drama? This is like the second time this has happened in the last 6 months. I guess that's fair. Yeah. I might be selecting on the wrong variable here. Yeah, I think the given the Cardinals own free agent departures, this makes a tremendous amount of sense for them. I think that having stable inings is underrated in terms of its value to the team. I think that Matt's like you said, like, a dependable, good pitcher, and he seemed to do well with Toronto, so that is a mark and his favor and Steve Cohen should log off. Yeah. He really should. He seems upset about apparently he thought that the negotiations were going differently than they did. He is making accusations about the agent who put out his own statement where he says that he's taken the high road, but yeah, I don't see the good outcomes that can come from your owner tweeting. I'm not happy this morning I've never seen such unprofessional behavior exhibited by a players agent. I guess words and promises don't matter. Steve Cohen men of his words, just the epitome of integrity in business is appalled at how the agent operated here. And, you know, nothing's done until the deal is signed. So I don't know where things were, and why he is upset about this. But clearly, the mets did not land Stephen Matson and so he probably should not be so upset about it. I don't want to overestimate the degree to which stuff like this matters because I think that if an agent is doing their job, they're in pursuit of the best possible contract they can secure for their client. And at the end of the day, that is the most important thing for them. And if it is done with an owner, whose Twitter behavior is immature, shall we say? I don't imagine that there actually is an agent out there that said, wow, I thought we were gonna land a good deal with them that's but now that I see how Steve Cohen is behaving on Twitter, forget it. I'm going to leave that good deal on the table until tweet about me. So I will go to my client money. That said, it is itself whatever may have transpired with Stephen mass's agent. I don't, no, I don't know. I think that like you said until a deal is done, it's not done, and he has an obligation to try to secure the best possible contract he can for Steven Matz. And that doesn't really take Steve Cohen's ego into account. That is an immaterial to that particular exchange. But it doesn't seem likely to help your negotiations when you're, you know, you look around and you're like, I guess I'm gonna have my business spread about Twitter by the actual owner. It's like, come on, man. Just keep that stuff in house. This is like our criticism of him earlier in the summer. No one wants to see their boss detailing their performance on Twitter, like those are conversations that should be conducted internally. That's how adults operate. So log off, Steve. This isn't helping you. Come on. Well, at least Billy epler knows what he's in for now. Enjoy it. Just said to long-term deal and this is what you signed up for. Yeah, I just I've said it before and I'll say it again. If I had a money Steve corn house, you'd never hear from me. You'd never hear from me. I'd be like, I am free of all of this..

All right. Deals that have happened this week, the Giants resigned Anthony diesel thani to a three year $36 million contract, and they reportedly also made a lot of progress in their talks with Alex wood. So the Giants filling out their rotation, the angels paid big for lefty reliever Aaron lupia yesterday two years $17 million deal. It includes a $2 million buyout and a third year option. Steven Matz, according to New York Post, we'll get a deal probably sometime in the next 5 days. There's a bunch of teams, including the Red Sox and the Blue Jays in on that bidding. "I don't know if that's going to happen again, and I don't know if they're going to be able to keep him long term, reusing ID he's probably going to slide backwards, Steven Matz is probably a slider. I don't know if they have pitching prospects who I necessarily feel confident in stepping immediately into the rotation and being dominant. It is possible, this is the best of Blue Jays will ever be. I don't know, you know, I don't think so. I think the offense is only getting better. But the rays aren't going anywhere. The Red Sox aren't going anywhere. I think the Red Sox have a solid core and a good group of positional prospects. And they could use some long-term pitching fixes too. But put an offense like that in Fenway Park they're going to score a lot of runs they're going to win a lot of games. The 80s aren't going to go anywhere either. No matter how pessimistic you want to be about them. And the Orioles aren't even close to any of those four teams. So you are going to have this baked in in here and Orioles advantage the Red Sox have taken advantage and the Yankees haven't. And so now the ignorant Red Sox are just separated by a couple of games and everything hinges on this weekend series. I'm gonna go prediction, you know, I don't like doing this because I usually am pessimistic and I'm also usually wrong. I do think the 80s are gonna win two out of these three games. And they're gonna lose the fried in that game..

"Runs in the last 5 games. And that's inflated by the 7 run performance against the Orioles on Sunday. It's unacceptable. We're back to we're back to being frustrated and calling the performance unacceptable because it is unacceptable. They're not facing. They're not facing any caliber of starting pitcher that is supposed to shut them down. They're just not doing anything of note. It's bad at bats. It's bad awareness. I mean, they did a bad luck last night. How many times they hit to the warning track? But just hit one over the fence. How many days do we have? They have an extra bass and Sunday in the 6th inning. Yeah, come on. Is that good? I mean, the crazy part about Tuesday's game is Garrett injured in the fourth inning doesn't have his best stuff. You can't figure out what it is. Can't command the curve ball. What have you, whatever, Alberta Brady gets out of that jam and it's three one. The problem is the offense. They don't they don't score again. It doesn't matter if Garrett Cole stays in the game if Garret gives up more than one run they lose that game. Like, and you know what, do I want garrick to be a fire breathing ace every time he steps in the mound and throw 8 shutout in that game? Sure. Then you're still calling out a role as chapter to protect a one nothing lead because this team can't hit. Again, all of a sudden, they can't hit. They even bench Joey gallery yesterday. Who's been the biggest problem? Hopefully he reemerges on Wednesday and doesn't hit in the two spot. That'd be nice because he struggles there. Be cool to see Aaron judge Rizzo leading off maybe anything to keep DJ who out of a double play spot because oh my God, it is like, first off, the IG should have given DJ Lemay who a blank check this off season anyway because money is endless and they can give everyone a blank check and who cares. But that fan service signing has turned out not terrible because at worst DJ Lemay is a competent contributor, but he's not an MVP and when he's not an MVP that downgrades the overall quality of this roster, these laboratories is regressed. Geo Rochelle has regressed the juice ball helped all three of those players immensely, even though he was also really, really good in 2020. But without le mayhew, I mean, they had le mayhew and void as MVP candidates in the short in 2020 and were barely a playoff team. So with le mayhew as a below average hitter and solid B minus contributor who hits in a way too many double plays. And with void as somebody who ends up on the bench for three games before playing once, this just is not the same baseball team. We're back into after the 13 year win streak, we are right back into wholesale changes are necessary mode, which is just an awesome place to be in. It's while they lost coal when they did, and that didn't end up being the narrative from that game. Instead, it was getting owned by Steven Matz and being held to singles and rarely rallying to be honest. We're not a lot of opportunities. When Cole went down, where was your panic meter act? Because I honestly am not kidding. I think the I was divorced from Yankee reality for a couple weeks earlier this season with Chapman blew the four run lead to the angels. I've said this many times. It was like a 15 day period before I was back like until the end of the asteroid series..

How do is get more done about Tigers legend Miguel Cabrera, Moreland's legend, as well became the 28th player in MLB history to hit 500 bombs his opposite field blast off Steven Matz in Toronto, propelled the 38 year old into an exclusive club and mats was the 345th pitcher. Mickey is tagged deep. The solo shot tied it up at one eventual 53 Tigers win over the Blue Jays in 11. Pretty great stuff pretty historic. I know the 500 home run benchmarks been watered down a little bit because of the steroid era. You don't really necessarily know what's what. But Miguel Cabrera to me. I mean, I I choose to believe that all of his accomplishments are authentic. I mean, until there's ever ever evidence to the contrary, I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt. And one of the purest hitters certainly from the right hand part of home plate foul line to foul line as a young moral and you could tell in the old three World Series of young never really had a true position can never really run. But man even as a 19 year old kid taking that fastball on the outer black and rifling it kind of like Mike Piazza did to the right center gap into the seeds down the line, pulling the inside pitch great hitter. "For that sixth inning blast against Toronto, puts in the record books his 13th home run of the season. Came off lefty Steven Matz. Now there's been a lot of rain is bullish has mentioned here the Northeast because of the tropical storm on re it's like Terry and Ree, not Henry Henry. So lots of rain. Lots of wet conditions, some pseudo flooding, but thankfully, nothing worse now up in New England, north of US Got a little windier little Little more nightmarish, but more as you being on long Island. You you fled to some of these home improvement places. And did you end up picking anything up for the for the rains? Oh, yeah. I spent almost $200 d, a stocking up on multiple propane canisters thinking if you're not having power for two weeks, she's seen a line of people propane. It took pictures of this. Rope. I have more rope that I know what to do with his Pete told me what you save that for giant season multiple cinder blocks because I didn't have any of my house. I need to stock up on that. Because I just did all this homework. I'm roping off in cinder block in down my new bar gazebo. I got loose. I don't have a shed yet. They still have built my shed. So my lawnmower everything I have nowhere to put it on rapid and tarps with rope and cinder blocks. To make sure doesn't blow everywhere I got, you know she would and all this other stuff that they've left out all over my yard. My contract is that so getting roped off cinder block sandbags outside my basement door and what I get a little bit little bit of a puddle coming through my my house. I have more propane That's going to last me till next fourth of July. And in the end, I'm thankful that the hurricane split off, but As of Saturday. I mean, we were going to category one, the I was over my town on one of the projections like I was going to get slammed. I panicked for dear life. And now I've basically flushed $200 and supplies down. I don't know if you're doing all this rope, always propane making burgers on Christmas. Tell me what you were going to do with the rope in the cinder blocks. You tie the rope to the cinder blocks and they act as anchors. Yes. So I actually have a couple pictures. So I have a brand new gazebo. We built a new blobs bar. Very nice. I've seen many of the Picture. The bar is not going anywhere. But the gazebo above its A little lighter eggs vented the wind could catch it and go nuts. It's supposed to get cement drilled it into my patio That has not happened yet. So red tie in knots and everything else around the cinder blocks and that's exactly what we had to do that to weigh it down. So you are. You are making your own anchors with a rope and with cinder blocks and and trying to weigh down everything in your yard. Because you you're worried that everything is going to blow away. I don't have a shed everything that's in my yard. There's nowhere to put it. So whatever's if stuff's not drill down, and like building material lawnmower could just get tossed over into the neighbor's yard. Or how about all this would for a pool deck and everything they've got to build? I mean, that could just go flying everywhere, right? Basically thought it was going to be like the Wizard of Oz with Dorothy in my house, and luckily nothing. Lot of materials. How many canisters of propane you got? I got three. What if I didn't a power could cook. I got a baby. I got away. There's a lot of things going. People got to eat. It was that none. Crushable peanut butter and jellies. I had no, you know, we had to prepare. So the threat in your neighborhood was no power for two weeks. Our power company and bogus could probably attest to this Tuesday. You know, we're on the same long pal committee. They pre called their shot. They sent text messages out to all of us. Hey, be prepared for no power for at least 7 to 10 Days. 7 to 10 Days. A true story. We all got text messages. They were already telling us that in some spots, but I don't so I don't know it was like it was. It wasn't a complete seven of anything, but it was be prepared for extended. We don't want to hear your complaints. So we're telling you now you're not going to have power for this long and then.

But we're so grateful to sell like we can call Sal almost any day. And he'll be like, Yeah. What time? Sure, yes, especially on days like this when he hosts in the morning. And then comes on with us like here, although today sound like kind of felt like you'd be up for it Since you did hockey for two hours this morning, I assume We did a little hockey, little football. I'm going to do that all week, man 10 to 12 today, tomorrow and Thursday, But those two hours fly by pretty quickly, actually, you know, I mean, sometimes you're sitting there. You're like, Hey, you know, And like you guys in your show, you might go. Wow, It's 35 o'clock, but Those two hours go by pretty quickly, especially if you have a couple of guests and I did today. Paul joined me. I had my buddy T. J. Reeves from Tampa. He's the sideline reporter for the Bucks. But he's a huge lightning guy, too. So, yes. Um it was a lot easier today to be able to come on. And especially having hockey talk mixed in to now. Come on and talk about football, too. Right? So you middled it You didn't get any stick to hockey complaints. No, I mean, I might. There might be people out there who think that but I make it known. Hey, we'll do a little bit of both. And I said that, Mike, you know when I go on, I said this at the outside of the show. This is the instigators time slot, so we'll do some hockey. But I'm also Sal, and when you hear my voice, you think football, So we'll do some of that, too. So you know, we'll try and mix in a little bit. I'm just kind of doing a show, you know, and that's what we'll do for for this week. Okay? Well, thanks again for being with us. We were talking, among other things in the first hour about what might worry a fan. About the bills. There's so much to like. I mean, it's such a rock solid roster last year was a dream. And most of the team is back, right? You didn't lose Brian dabble. What is the thing? What is the To you. What would your answer be? Maybe you think what might be the most common answer to such a question? Like what is a concern that a fan has about them. I would think macro first, and I don't know if you guys are talking more about like specific Positions or players, But I would think to me macro, which is and I've heard this a lot. Have they really gotten better this off season? I think that's the concern like when you have aspirations to win a Super Bowl. After getting to the final four. You think you you have to find a way to beat those other two teams, The Chiefs and the Buccaneers here and maybe even the Packers since they were you know the other team in that mix, but I think the concern would be have they really gotten better? Sure they've signed They're good players who are free agents. Um, there's been a couple of changes here and there. Um, and they have a lot of guys returning and they have coaches returning. But have they gotten better? Have they bridged that gap? I think To me. That's the number one concern with fans who want to see this team. Take that next step. And wondering if they can do that, if they've gotten good enough to do that. Yeah, it took. It took me. I don't know. It felt like 20 minutes. I don't know if it was that long to get to something that to me sell her dog tails into or off of what you just said Because getting better like I I talked about right after they lost to the Chiefs. What? What? You know what do I think? The the differences in these two teams. And there's a lot of answers to that. But one on a macro scale. I looked at and thought the bills are not fast as fast as the Chiefs can be on offense, so I need to. I need to get better at that. And not only to my eyes or ears. Did the bills not do that, really by adding people like they changed out someone who was more known for speed than the player that replaces them. With Sanders coming in for John Brown? So like, I guess I'm still you know, if that was a concern I had back in January. There's been really nothing done to address it. Maybe they've gotten faster on defense with Basham and Russo added in, you might hope so. But as far as offense goes in the skill positions like your role in the same group out here again with Sanders for Brown, which, if anything, is Lateral at best, probably a downgrade in outright speed impact. Yeah, and it's It's not like now that you're saying this. Obviously it's not like you're trying to the bills. Offense is going against the chief's offence Per say they're not right. But if you're going to match up with the kids, City chiefs and get no track meet, you better have the horses to do it right, because that's what they do. They're going to get a track meet. They're going to get it to their fast guys. And you're going to have to be able to keep up with them. Well, how do you do that? Well, you probably should have an ability to do the same in to score and we saw twice last year that the bills really don't have that and didn't have that weren't able to at least in those games. They weren't able to do that. There were times last year where the bills We're able to kind of score quickly getting a track meets with teams. They were down at Miami early in the season. They came back with a barrage of points late. Um, they were able to, you know, in in the first half of the Rams game, the Seattle game. I think there were times there's Their ability to strike in their speed showed up. But if you want to play against the Kansas City Chiefs, you better go in there ready to get as I said into a track meet, and it's not that you have to stop them where they fast offense, but you have to keep up with them with a faster offense. Yeah, The chief's always come up like that's a concern. That you have the second best team in the conference. At best doesn't mean you have to lose to them. Right, but They really were not. It wasn't it Wasn't that close? Either game. It was they were winnable. Especially the first one is winnable, but not that close. I don't know. I I guess I feel like the bills. Okay. They didn't improve or you know that you could say that they didn't add speed..
