Nike CEO John Donahoe's Lessons on Servant Leadership

"What star. John rains that i am most associate with you. Which is servant leadership. And i'd love if you could describe your philosophy on servant leadership especially try to conceptualize it for much smaller organizations. What does it mean to serve leader as a ceo of a bunch of ceo's around the table how should they think about how that philosophy conform away they run their business so when i talk about servant leadership. It's frankly the the way. I learned to lead because i actually learned the lead in partnership a ban where you aren't really empowered to do anything to you have to earn the respect and the followership of others. You guys don't have that as founders. But i do think you'll find that. Many of the best leaders exhibited the principles servant leadership. And i just say how do i serve serve. The purpose of the organization serve the customers served. The employees serve the communities in which we operate in a jim collins called at level five leadership other people call from things. But it's when someone it's not about the leader it's about what it is. We are trying to accomplish right and some of the antithesis of what's hot silicon valley at different times the narrative. Always around the all-powerful founder. They're all powerful leader. And i think there's actually very few examples where that actually great sustainable companies come out of that my leadership role model for large parts of my career with phil jackson of the chicago bulls. Now it'd be steve kerr for your younger and would always struck me. He was able to do is get people who actually were better than he was klay. Together he got michael jordan. Scottie pippen dennis. Rodman caster characters to win six championships. It got shack kobe to play together. You look at you. Look at steve kerr the warriors right. Now he's getting. Somehow he's getting steph curry klay thompson and kevin durant andrew mongering all vying to something greater and they win i view with how do you build high performance teams of top talent to win and servant leadership is part of it.

"We're still talking about the fall out of the draymond green kevin durant situation the show. They did in which they both said. Hey it's bob myers and steve kerr's fault why. The dynasty broke up because of the way they handled our disagreement that we had in two thousand eighteen as time has gone on like you see this look draymond. Green is a smart guy. He knows the impact of his words. Is this dream on pulling james harden going you know what whatever conversation we've had the at the olympics when everybody's hanging out. Hey i want out golden state now. Because i want to get someplace else. 'cause you're blowtorch and your gm at your coach something. That was three years ago. I i've not heard tentatively that that was the purpose behind what he said and there remains the possibility that it was simply. I wanna clear my name. And i wanna do something. That's explosive on my first podcast as i prepare myself for my post my post playing career. i do. I will tell you that it did not sit well at all with the warriors and it shouldn't that from either. Yeah from either one of them and it it. It does undermine their authority and moving forward trying to trying to put this team together.

Steve Kerr: Kevin Durant 'More Gifted' Than Michael Jordan

"Steve. Kerr says kevin durant is more getty. Take it away. Then michael jordan so kerr coaster for three seasons as we know golden state warriors the nba finals all three years. That katie played for them. They won two titles. He was the finals. Mvp in both championships and had amazing performances. Now they could've probably pulled off a three peat if if it wasn't for durant's that that obviously achilles pop it on him against the raptors final season. Now steve kerr also play. Played with michael jordan won two titles with mj with the bulls so his perspective on this obviously is something that is interesting because he played with jordan but coach durant and listen to what he said nbc bay area about kevin durant and his comparison to jordan is the most talented basketball player on earth If not of all time. Honestly he's just so gifted played with michael jordan. And and and i know i think he's more gifted i really do. I mean it saying something but kevin is a different entirely different breed. I mean six eleven With guard skills unlimited three point range passing blocking at the rim. It's just stunning and watching him. This year was really really ratifying to see

N.H.L. Fires Referee for Comment on Penalty Call

"Well the nhl has announced that. Tim peel has been fired immediately. He will never work. Nhl games now in the future. Colin campbell announced it this morning. By saying in part there is no justification for his comments no matter the contexts or its intention in the nhl will take any and all steps necessary to protect the integrity of our game. This is incredibly overzealous on part of the nhl. What do you think yes a little much. I mean i get why they're doing it because you just don't want to see. They have an agenda. Coming in like things are predetermined. I mean you. And i both know what he's saying. Is i want to keep the game from getting out of control. So we're setting the tone early. I mean that's that's what ref do but you're not supposed to acknowledge it and i think it's just they don't need to fire him though like you know. And maybe they could. They could quietly bring him back but it seemed like they were making him a scapegoat for this. I got a. I got an email from a friend of mine. Who's a referee. And i gave you the name. Because he's still rafts yup but here's what he said. I've officiated thousands of basketball games in my life. Tim peel said what every single official has thought. During a many times we just either keep it to ourselves or speak about it to our partner at halftime when it's only us in a room in a basketball game. Let's say the foul count is one side. Maybe it's six. Oh the calls were all one hundred percent correct and the foul count should be six. Oh if not more we can look up at the scoreboard and see the count and we also gear up from the coach. Who said he's had six called against his and none of four forum and if there's a break in the game wrestled get together. And if they're veteran officials yeah they will say they need to call one against the team with zero fouls the next time. That team comes anywhere close to committing a foul. That's the one that's going to get called if the files were six. Oh against them. There's no way we'd call that foul but here comes a whistle. Both coaches know. It's coming to and this guy. My friend is exactly right. Yeah i for the initial shock time gambling going on here further. Okay the rest being mic'ed up. There's a lot of players that we i know about the nba. They have players are miked. Up and coaches are miked up. There's somebody who they don't all go on the broadcast. I mean there is a feed where the unedited sound this. Somebody leaks it but mostly the only stuff that the the broadcast air has been sort of pre-approved somebody from the league. That's sitting there listening to it saying okay. We use that use this. This'll be good juicy and a years. Do you remember when the when the warriors were playing the rockets and steve kerr was there was a there was audio of steve. Kerr saying something about. Kevin durant like kevin needs v or aggressive or. I can't remember what he said but it was something like he needs to. He can't just take over there. You know whatever it was and it got through like we they aired it on the broadcast and then it became a thing game. Steve kerr got asked about it and stuff and he was rightly pretty upset. Because that's the exact kind of thing that you know the this whole thing of biking coaches and players up. It's based on trust. It's based on this idea that you know you're going to kind of protect me from something like that happening. Right of of in the moment and the emotions of the game coach yells at star player star player yells at so teammate. Whatever which is literally what happens in every single game if that gets taken out if that gets blown up that quote gets goes everywhere like then it becomes a problem for these coaches and players. And they're not gonna let themselves get mike up

"Our listeners. Right now. I asked got to come on the podcast earlier. He jumps on just moments ago tells me that he's on vacation. So scott stepped away from a to join me on the podcast that that might be the hardest working call now to step away from vacation to japan podcasts. Connor am trying to get a big raise. You know but actually this this is so it's such a pleasure doing a podcast with you there. I don't consider it work. I appreciate that. I appreciate that. Hopefully you can crack a beer And relax You know. Because i think a lot of warriors fans are not relaxed and i think that that's exactly what they need in their lives. This has been a pretty tumultuous few weeks for warriors nation adver dub nation You know obviously you have klay thompson injury. Then you have the positive coronavirus test from jays. Wise men and draymond green. Then you have the drubbings Against milwaukee and brooklyn on national. Television you. You still have draymond green out with a foot issue And then you get marquees. Chris with coming down with a broken leg and mark. He's being a key part of that center Now it's looking like visits. Itchy could missed the entire season. I mean when you're when you wake up each day and you see the latest batch of bad news from the warriors what what are you thinking thinking. It's going to be a rough year. I'm thinking this is going to be like an ultimate Up and down year rollercoaster. Because there's there's there's like two or three teams in the league or just being one of them that are just going to be all over the map and it's not only because the injuries and everything but it becomes the key to the the guys they have you know they got two or three guys like kelly regain one and two other guys. You know that consistency is not their big thing right. And just you know it. Seems as always dream on steph curry klay. Go cold the times and even steph a little bit but basically you knew what you were going to get some of those guys and these guys are three or four of them. You don't know what you're gonna get including james weisman you know. I think we're going to get a steady eighteen sixteen point tonight. Seven eight ten rebounds. You don't know so for these guys could be sensational night. Maybe they'll beat the lakers. Maybe we'll beat the top teams but they're just going wake up and down yet in. The first couple of weeks of any season are interesting. Because you you'll always interest season with a certain measure of optimism whether or not you're the media covering the team whether or not you're the team itself or the fans your. It's easy to lean toward a glass half full approach Especially when you're talking about the warriors given the fact that they are really competent franchise the well-run attend to make sound decisions And they have a winning pedigree So it's easy. It was easy for me as the b writer to kinda throw out last season and enter this season before. Clay's injury saying. I think they can be the rare team to exercise the memory of leaguers record in income out and legitimately contemporary title. Now obviously my my My narrative changed a little bit once. Clay went down but even after that you you came on the bottom. We talked about expectations for the season. And i said that. I think there's an outside chance that all things go well that they could be a top four stephen west now here we are less. I think as i remember. I predicted they'd win six games this year right. Yeah that's yeah you. You predicted all this you. You predicted the maurice. Chris injury exactly. Yeah draymond and at a men positive tests you you. You're basically a cerebral here but The interesting thing is that were a week into the season. And i'm already realizing the flaw in a lot of my logic there because For as i said a couple of weeks ago in the pod for for this team to be a top seed in the west literally everything needed to direct now the reality of not just an nba season but life is not everything goes right. There are always things that come up that change the situation that change expectations and so may i thought more realistically this team was probably like a six seed in the west somewhere in that six seven range. What i'm realizing now and you don't wanna gleam too much from just three games. But i do think that those three games have been forceful enough to make it very clear that this is not a top four team in the west by any measure By any by any standard But i'm realizing that forever. If everything goes right from here obviously a lot of things already gum wrong but if a lot if everything goes right from this point forward this team to me at best a sixth seat in the west i think more realistically there somewhere between eight and ten. Now keep in mind. You have the in tournament for the playoffs this year. So a ten seed you could still potentially get into the playoffs I think that there's somewhere in that eight to ten range more realistically and i also think it's very possible that that they just ended up being a bad team that they ended up being legitimate sub. Five hundred team with no serious shot of the place. I think that is actually more likely at this point. Then being a in west. Yeah i think we're back. To the pre. Steve kerr era where the like three years before that. And under mark jackson given when the team was improving every year. Going in and early on it was i. Can this team make the playoffs. And even going down the stretch was can they make the playoffs. You know when you're they made it as last night and then he made it a couple of times but it was always touching go. So yeah it's going to be the era of short five year era of guaranteed making the western conference finals. Every year was when the season started was is pretty much down the drain your they they may have done selves favor by get smoked in those first two games. They certainly lord everybody's expectations right. After after this to horb people figured it's no surprise that are going to be at all to but to lose that badly and just looked terrible. Almost every respect. I think just changed. Everybody's mind set all the fans for sure anyway and maybe some of the players to i got this team's gonna struggle in which better embrace it and get out of it. What what we can. My biggest reason for concern in the season was the fact that steve capri to. We need to talk to in defense. We need a top ten defense. I don't blame him for that. i think that's i doubt we're coaching to try to get his players to believe that but just as an objective reporter of the team. I heard that. I thought that is not possible. That's just simply not possible. No reality not happen Team had the fifth worst defense in the league last season. And they're without their best defender again in klay thompson. We don't know what draymond is right now. I mean he he didn't look great last season Even if he's at full strength and the clip the dream on of old. I'm not convinced that he singlehandedly can make this not just the top ten defense but a top half of the league defense Because they don't have any other proven defenders. I mean you're you're asking. Andrew wiggins and kelly. Oubre way to be your go-to permettre defenders. Which yes they have length. Yes yesterday athletic. But they've.

He spent a Lotta time with Kevin Durant is I would talk to him over the years about his experiences. In golden state like not just learning from Steve Kerr and those guys who specifically he was working within. Tens of thousands of people rally against Lukashenko in Belarus

"Where Can Belarus President Turn Now? Thousands of people were back on the streets protesting this weekend still angry at what they believe was a rigged presidential election President Lukashenko who claimed as he returned to power with an eighty percent approval rate responded by flying over the protesters wearing riot gear with a rifle slung from his shoulder. Well, drained over is L. Editor of Belarus Anna Leasing at the University of Brain and I'm delighted to say she joins us on the line now Auger a very warm welcome to monocle twenty four. These absolutely bizarre scenes of President Lukashenko yesterday. Well. Yes. I was actually also quite as to see you know him banning public with a gun and also his fifteen year old son campaign him so to say so it's the definitely assigned for me that he he's kind of knocked children confidence in front of the people who through testing by his residence, and it's also not you know not that Jerry. Addict from me because the protest is peaceful, protesters will not trying to receive this residents in the state needs. said the wall spread the information that there was some attempt to seek the? Residency so it's quite an emotional psychological reaction from him. I would say and will. Nobody. that. So it's also very strong sign that there is now readiness of from from the official from the state site for any kind of luck that you know this new to build coordination committee by Dehaan Oscar and she team is is trying to do initiate and I think everybody most notably people. In Belarus itself have been absolutely taken aback by the brutality of the reaction by the the Lauren forces to the protesters and the fact that Alexander Lukashenko was was dressed up in riot gear suggests that he doesn't have anywhere to go other than a violent approach. Yes I would also I would also expects it. You know what targeted repressions and they're ready started last week and they continued this week. So what what would serve now is definitely not base wave of unprecedented repression that we. Saw Three days and nights after the elections but still there are targeted repressions and against. Most active people are also criminal case has been initiated against the newly built coordination committee and people. People are invited to some talks with KGB officials until also people actually also bill will try to strike there actually threatened. By the direction openness of the state owned enterprises that they would lose their jobs and so on. So observe already targeted pressure on people, but this wave is still not to the tide because you know. So what international reaction was so the state drives, you know just show from the one handed, it's not ready for the data from the one hand there is the rest of. You know not not to let this protests spread. Within the country how much do you think that's what the foreign observers of said about what's been happening in Belarus for the last couple of weeks is actually forming any decision made by Alexander Lukashenko at the moment. Well I think that it will quite an important aim has been achieved ready and that we actually we have understood that he's not legitimate within the society right within the boat society and I think also problem was that he really did not understand that. Shortly after the elections or before the elections so and. Actually. I think that the reaction was not is at least that. He and his circles really have the distended. Okay. He doesn't have any majority in society, but it has not led so far to his readiness for dialogue just in the all the way he kind of supports the security structures in internal, Misteri Ministry and actually he even gave you know about three hundred medals to those who are actually responsible of for for this incident violence. So he kinds of stresses that the security two structures military is. Actually the most important pillar his powerful for now for the moment, the Steve Kerr show is joining us now he's policy and advocacy. Directorate. Freedom from torture and author of St Spirit Steve. Welcome. Thanks for joining us. Hey On monocle twenty, four Olga a moment ago mentioned the fact that the secret police is still called the KGB I mean, what does that say about the level of influence at Russia's still has in terms of the way that Belarus's going and whether Russia just going to sit this out. Yes I mean I either it reflects influence of Russia, which is August is certainly, very great or it's just almost bizarre retro element to to better under Lukashenko. He doesn't mind thinking in those terms I think it is going to be. So Russia will certainly be an important factor and but at the same time Mosca really doesn't want to be. Getting, further involved in in a very direct since that's going to be difficult for Russia as well. So I think that Lucas. Is playing a very difficult game. If he was giving small confessions, I think he might have some a little bit more success in some homage to blunt things but so far at least the violence has had absolutely opposite effective people become more and more angry the fear obviously quite rightly the last Sunday was absolutely crucial. I would argue that the US huge threats of on ahead of Sunday hoping that people. Would back off and stay at home and actually it was a big rally than ever. So not particular face off. There's no question that Lukashenko loss what happens next we'll still see I'll steve has suggested that Sunday was a pivotal moment some people waiting for what is described as a tipping point when an event causes things to go one way or the other would you say that Sunday was part of that? Tipping Point. Demon this Sunday last Sunday. To Sunday. The Sunday. Just gone when tens of thousands of people came out onto the streets to set by a threat the first Sunday directly after the elections. Yes. I it just completely I mean people never any. Okay. What we're talking about batteries and Ballard who's says, Chris it's not the first Sunday that actions pulses side will have to admit that it also not to the extent that people actually being tortured eating the prisons will have also. took a beast fag, but it's for the first very time that such vast majority of people. So it with their own is is of their families or friends in stone. So you can imagine how many are nets were the strategy when they're where our seven seven thousand arrests. So it's it's quite a big part of the country said it's really I would agree it had an opposite effect and it's also for the first time that you know this special. GRANITZ or gas or a also rubber bullets on there were actually used against own population. It never existed in the history of Belarus in October election protests, people widget shocked and I think it was a shock from the both sides because the state net expected to such mass protest before also before three weeks before the elections would be solved by. About two to five or even six percent of local population came to to railways with Hannele. It's also unprecedented thing was kind of shock from both sides and of course, people people were also by this eighty percent because nobody really believes that anymore I mean. People also really did not quite believe that before I, would say people heading out some kind of feeling that president steelhead had a majority maybe not eighty percent maybe fifty five, maybe sixty but this feeling was there and this style with completely different. So quiet in Jersey, you know quite a big part even I think I would say the majority of people just didn't believe that he actually has any kind of fifty plus and that was the problem that we still have this eighty percents I think people would just. People were just humiliated by that of course, activate shortly afterwards by this unprecedented wave refreshing stave when we look to the further history of batteries, which is being written right now when considering what sort the former eastern bloc countries of have seen in the last three decades. When regime ends, it's generally quite a peaceful affair actually the deleted. is of removed from office. This is unlikely to happen here. Isn't it? Well, I mean, sometimes it has been an sometimes it hasn't been. So when I was a journalist working for the independent, I was the East Europe during the eighty nine revolutions and also join me the fall of Milosevic Milosevic in Serbia and cover dot and there a number of those leaders were ready to use very significant violence and what I'm fascinated by very moved by what was seeing with the courage. A better as protesters today is to see that they are defined vence in the same ways that work very effectively for example, in East Germany where people were threatened with extraordinary for someone particular day in Leipzig in. October nineteen eighty-nine the fact that so many people came out meant regime which had publicly declared its loyalty to force actually back down in Romania I very much. Hope it weren't turn into remain, but we do already see that there are splits within Belarus at the riot police remain loyal. The moment we've seen a number of police units splits off. We've seen a lot of establishment figures putting off in the same way as also does something happened in in Ukraine and the Orange Revolution, and once you see security forces a different security forces splitting away going like enough already as August said, I mean the eighty percent. Claim was was absurdly insulin and the degree of the virus even Grayson seen before and I think this is really interesting. It might end up in huge volumes but I think Lukashenka would lose very very badly that to happen I think it's a regional issue. How if you like bluntly how crazy you are Milosevic. For example, he survived on one occasion ninety seven by giving some concessions and then re clamping down and people just got tired and went back when you use real violence I think it's really difficult. It was a great book written by Richard couple the Polish off I was written about the Iranian revolution. Charlotte. Charlotte's but very much reflected his own country Poland which forty years ago. This month solidarity kind of a huge opposition movement didn't call itself opposition challenge the regime and unthinkable circumstances laying Brezhnev for the very reactionary Russian leader was still in power. They managed to become successful and he said the moment where people stand in front of eastern threatens violence, the pre curry signing backstops, and instead someone stands there and doesn't back down he said, this is where the revolution begins, and after that in effect is the exact the precipice. If you're to violence, you make people more angry if you start making concessions than people go. We have lost our fear and in a sense the certain moment difficult to prediction events but describable. There is no way back to the regime and it still seems a little bit early to say but I think it's very, very difficult to see how Lukashenko come back from this. If he steps back more gently than, of course, it will be peaceful. The protests have been fun tastic peaceful and very, very consciously so far the extended even cleaning up rubbish because I really vary consciously very civic. Minded. So he might just go off and disappear off to Russia for example, and as it will live happily ever after but he tries to bring out all of the guns. Then I think you know all bets are off but I don't think it was a good ending for him whichever way it goes Steve Crozier and Elga agenda over there. Thank you for joining us on monocle twenty four.

Kevin Durant reveals when he knew he'd leave Warriors after last year

"Lot of these trades. Aides are confusing and Diangelo Russel. This is his fourth team now. and He's twenty three he's eight dynamite all star and so he kinda got thrown into the mix. Because if you're the if you're the the the warriors and you could get him in the process of losing durant you do that a hundred times out of one hundred. It's just the question. Is that if I told you at the time right that when they were losing him you know when they were losing durant and gaining him that it would turn into Andrew Wiggins and a top three protected first round pick. I think we would have said at the point in time. Okay I got it because you're already seeing the first blush results on NBA NBA twitter. That he's kind of playing the role of Harrison Barnes and the first championship run remember Harrison Barnes was the crucial member of that was and that wiggins is going to play that role. Livingston's not there anymore right so so he would be that guy. And if you're Steve Kerr you're like I can. Let's get to this guy if I'm coaching up. Three million green and his personality Wiggins of former number one overall here comes wiggins. I'm thinking he's thinking that and is now just think about it. Think about it next year. Are they open up in that beautiful jewel up in San Francisco. It's all filled up right and Curry Klay. Draymond Andrew Wiggins and number five stroll on the floor and number five could be the first overall selection in the draft left or the fourth overall selection in the draft. They could have all those guys showing up there next year and have the first and fourth overall picks in the draft tiredly possible

Grizzlies' Andre Iguodala situation is ugly, but this is how the trade game is played

"The trade deadline is Thursday and by the way do you have an opinion on de Angelo Russell I I got to tell you this at first I was completely in favor of moving him but having gone to a few games Polly being is the partial season ticket holder and fill up man he is a beautiful score he really is and maybe the idea of him and clay and stuff on the same team is kind of intriguing you know not the roster destruction be interesting but right now the timber wolves aren't offering enough so the ways do you have to make a move though to get under attacks line otherwise have to pay a forty million dollar fine I think a lake of even as much as he likes his who concerts in his post Malone concerts and he's not looking to pay forty mil right so Alec Burks could move a blend Robinson could move yeah Amari Spelman could move Jacob everything will come on Looney could move by you gotta wonder what his future is I mean it's unfortunate because he was became such a dependable player for Steve Kerr but I mean I don't know is is he ever going to get back but the real story planned out is with our old pal Andrea you get done yeah how about this is a really weird story he hasn't played a minute from Memphis this year and by the way I think he's making like seventeen Mill seventeen seventeen Mill and I am a little unclear I've tried to read up in much again yeah one clear as to how he can just stay away like is there something in the CBA were like no you gotta come play for is like the guy in office space is again just not going to work anymore I'm just not going under you've missed a lot of games I wouldn't exactly say missing at and I by the way when it when Andriy does come back and go to practice the question is does he clean of fish on newspaper in the locker room do does the does god can offer yeah so anyway so they're going to try to move him and get some for him chained to a veteran team and now the Memphis Grizzlies having a surprisingly good here the twenty five and twenty five they actually hold the eight spot right now they do they got young players like John Moran and they got Dillon Brooks and Dillon Brooks finally just yesterday said you know what we young guys on the Grizzlies a few Andre staying away yeah you can email this

Warriors' Curry suffers broken hand in hard fall

"Suns beat the warriors one twenty one one ten it wasn't even that close warriors allowing a hundred twenty point to be to their first four games for the second time in franchise history but Steph curry goes down winds up being a broken hand coach Steve Kerr in a tough spot start for us on many levels so we're just trying to find her footing and obviously this puts us in a in a tough spot so we'll we'll assess certain we'll go from there we able to talk to staff at all after the game any sense of what what he what his emotions are right now no he was not in the locker room just now when the game ended Stephen I just heard the news what do you think though right away about that responsibility on some of the young guys the extra minutes now coming up for the young guys and where to go from here well you know it's a great opportunity for these young guys to play it's also a little bit too much here is so you want to you want to bring along rookies as best you can and we're just putting so much on their plate we have no choice with all the injuries so I think for you know they have to just seize the opportunity and we as coaches we have to help them do the best job they can and continue to learn general Myers a general manager Bob Myers telling ESPN's Nick for dell that curry will have an MRI and CT scan of it from there they will determine whether or not he needs surgery and what the time table will be what will it be like for the warriors though moving

"Nike promotes itself as a so called social justice champion when it comes to Hong Kong if the first checking its social conscience at the door Mike pence not let it go that Nike has a company believes in taking a stand but is it really taking a stand on principle if you benefit financially from the stand and if you would refuse to take a stand if I were a Harley financially it's not just self interest you could even argue maybe it's good business but it's not what it is at least not as we have been led to believe what they should be practiced it's not praise it's not courage what is it exactly what is it that we need to understand here about Nike now Charles Barkley I remember watching Sir Charles which is what he was called because of I believe that maybe was a Nike campaigner Reebok campaign I can never back in the day I did watch a lot of bass program actually played basketball growing up I was pretty decent hello point guard you know that's gonna say in the mold of John Stockton or Steve Kerr I could dribble I could shoot but this is Steve Kerr the one now who's just hates America my right yes he's the head coach of the Golden State Warriors he's on hates America is he's very woke anyway Charles Barkley you never know what you're together sometimes he has his moments of of analytic brilliance not just about sports but about things in general I've heard him say very funny very entertaining things very insightful things in fact and he's not afraid to say whatever but I gotta say disagree with Sir Charles here as he has some harsh words for the vice president added states like a twenty please let me say this vice for the president to suffer hello all American companies are doing business in China all American companies are doing business on a hot topic criticism of commissioner silver and lebron James was unfair isn't there a more who I like he should have you can say whatever he wants to but there are consequences I don't understand why these whole really about politicians so one of war about China won't be stopped all transactions with China's president trump has been an ardent with terrible China for the last two years on fair for them to do all their business shama just because this thing happen try to make the NBA and our players look bad all American companies do business in China I think Mister Barclay here is leaving out some important components of this for one he yes all American come on I'm not that's action after all of them but my American companies are doing this with China that is by and large a true statement and not all American companies hold themselves up as champions of social justice and an individual rights and and you know human dignity human rights whatever maybe Nike does Nike makes it very very public runs campaigns about how they do care about those things so that I think it is fair to ask okay so do they only care about those things though when there's no consequence for caring about it that's what Charles Barkley is missing here you know lebron James did not have to speak out on the issue of the more you tweet and China lebron James didn't just say something he said that Maury doesn't know what he's talking about and more he does know what he's talking about and he's right we just leave that we we push out off to the side so I I would know that there it's important that we not lose sight of what really has gone on here what the reality of this China situation truly is but here again just real quick from vice president pens click with ten please China will step forward sees this unique moment in history start a new by ending the trade practices an advantage in the American people for far too long I know president Donald Trump is ready and willing to begin that new future trump was right about China has been right about China doesn't get nearly enough credit for answers right about China as well any change course wrong need to confront them in ways that are constructive the

NBA-China standoff intensifies over controversial tweet

"So Daryl Morey he's the general manager of the Houston Rockets have put out a tweet the other day basically saying he stands with Hong Kong we stand with Hong Kong and when we all we being a collective as this country should go yep that's right I mean there there's nothing controversial about that right China is a corrupt authoritarian regime they're awful they're terrible and for four years and if you think communism's okay even if you're a Bernie bro for decades China has inflicted immense harm on the American economy either through currency manipulation or intellectual property rights violations whatever there's a litany of things China is a bad dude they're a bad actor there a bad player and the fact that the folks in Hong Kong continue to protest and continue to fight in could you have violence in many cases and acted on them for liberty and freedom to break free of the oppressive Chinese regime there is no question all of us should go get we still in Hong Kong now I'm not saying military intervention I'm not saying anything of that sort but in terms of who you well yeah we should want to people who stand for liberty and freedom who hole I could the U. S. who want to be friends with us we stand with those people nothing controversial about that at all online as you've got billions of dollars at stake when the N. B. A. dulls through its relationship with China the NBA has literally over over a course of time billions of dollars at stake because of the money that China represents to them through having games played over there do merchandising through television and China I code bill of you know words over there in China easy we get this thing over it's called freedom of speech and you can tell Intel the American government to **** off all you want in fact NBA really encourages that you know they awoke people over there in the NBA really educated top flight people they know what's going on you know like lebron James number he was wearing the bait hat in the takers lecture and they got dudes like a great pop of it use the coach of the San Antonio Spurs any at Steve Kerr gonna hear from him in just a second coach for the for the Golden State Warriors they're really woke when it comes to Tromp in the social issues in American their their whole only willing to speak out yeah you can't can't do that over there in China because they they do things like chop the hands off and stuff like that so so NBA's got a got a problem see the problem is NBA courage is the won't guys to speak our right you know lebron pop of the Steve Kerr when it comes to repent on trump for the Republicans or whatever else but now they get this do Daryl Morey who says basically what every American should think regardless of political party which is we stand with people who are at liberty and freedom the new gatt China that accounts for billions of dollars and China has already said we can't up your hands on but we can cancel your pre season games V. from being aired on Chinese state television which is what has happened so what do you do if you're the NBA well there was a time in this country where it was country first there was a time were being an American and standing for something meant something and that meant we would tell China okay fine you don't want our product is our backs and were big enough for the National Basketball Association there are more important things than money or or not anymore my friends because not only is the NBA refusing to say that and by the way this is only going into one of two ways because again China eighteen ****

NBA commissioner defends free speech as China threatens league

"NBA commissioner Adam silver is standing firm after receiving a lot of backlash over his view on the Hong Kong protests USA's Tim Berg reports silver has been trying to find middle ground of showing support for team executive who spoke out for Hong Kong's protesters and protecting the league's growth in a basketball craze China silver statements have Democrats and Republicans criticizing the NBA commission to which Beverly hall Burke president of the district media group says when was the last time you saw Ted Cruz injection right I agree on anything apparently there are still some issues that bring Republicans and Democrats together and I think this is one that definitely warrants it what's interesting about it is that Adam silver who is the NBA commissioner has long said that he stands up for the free speech rights of players in those affiliated with the NBA you mentioned some examples there when players have spoken out you had lebron James who's called president trump the bomb you have coaches Steve Kerr and Gregg Popovich who have tweeted about their position on gun control but apparently it's a step too far when you call out the Chinese government indirectly in and something to know about China they kill their citizens currently there are three million people who are in concentration camps you can stand up for the Chinese people and still call out the Chinese government but I think what this comes down to and people are rightly seen that the messaging war on this it really shows of the NBA's bottom line is about the bottom line Hoiberg was speaking there on fox

"The Golden State Warriors stayed alive in the NBA finals. They beat the Toronto. Raptors one zero six zero five in Canada. But in the process, they lost forward, Kevin Durant who went down with an apparent achilles injury in the second quarter the warriors get within three games to two in the series. But head coach Steve Kerr could not completely enjoy it so bizarre feeling that we all have right now, an incredible win and a horrible loss at the same time at this. Point, the warriors are not exactly sure how severe Durant's injury is GM. Bob Myers heaven headed. It's an achilles injury. I don't know the extent of it. He'll have an MRI tomorrow. Boy, you can hear the emotion Myers, voice, ESPN reporting, the warriors believe in MRI today. We'll confirm that Durant suffered a torn achilles. Durant scored eleven points in twelve minutes before going down. Steph curry finished with thirty one points, Klay, Thompson added twenty six the two combined to shoot twelve of twenty seven from three point range game six

"Are at this week's conversation is with NBA head coach Steve Kerr, and he's a coach of the Golden State Warriors. And if you're familiar with possible, you know, that they had been on an absolute tear for the last handful of years. It's been an amazing building of team chemistry and performance that Steve has been part of at the helm of. And it's just flat out ridiculous. What they've done. And so this conversation is working on pack and decode how how has he done that who has he become and who is he working on becoming and what is the path that led him to both of those places in more. Specifically he this is his fifth year as head coach with the team. And during that time he's helped the team towards three NBA championships for straight NBA final appearances the NBA single season win record seventy three wins in NBA coach of the year award in twenty fifteen twenty sixteen in four of the five. Winningest seasons in franchise history loaded so Steve who won five NBA championships during a fifteen year playing career now has eight championships. Either the player in a coach and is the first to win three NBA titles as a player and three as a coach so outcome. Yes. He's got. But this conversation is not about the outcome. It's about the process. It's about the way he thinks in organizes his life in for those of you unfamiliar with the Seattle Seahawks, which is an NFL team the head coach at that organization is p Carol he's also a partner in a business that we fired up together compete to create and his whole philosophy inside of that organization is to always compete compete to become the best version of yourself compete to be a best dad, the best son, the best friend the best coach the best player, whatever the role is at hand. And Steve has made a point to. To revolve, the warriors culture around joy and in this conversation. We discuss how Steve went on about building the warriors culture, and what he is most hungry for his biggest challenges at the moment. And then finding a way to keep the warriors driven and hungry and playing with joy after they've already experienced so much previous success and so winning after winning success after success is a whole different type of challenge. And Steve has a brilliant mind, A Beautiful Mind, and the way he expresses that genius inside a basketball is rare in its unique. And I think you're gonna love his insights, not just for basketball though, but life as a whole and with that, let's jump right into this conversation with coach Steve Kerr. Steve, how are you? I'm good. How are you Mike? Thanks for taking the time. I've been looking forward to having this conversation with you for a while. Pleasure. So the first time we met it was number years ago up at the Seahawks. I knew was taking a really good job. We had a lot of talent. But to think that it would all come together like this. I never never could see that coming. But it was it really was a great time for me that that summer. Trying to figure out you know, how I wanted to coach and. My visit to Seattle seeing using Pete watching the Seahawks practice for a few days. Just seeing their culture senior environment was a huge influence on me. And and it continues to be so, you know, Pete Pete remains a good friend, and we talk quite a bit. And I love the way he goes about his business. And that was a big experience for me in terms of helping me become the coach I am. Now, you know, one of the things that struck me about that brief intense time that we had was how. Great of student. You are. And now I'm saying that in you've won. I think today eight championships, and you won a handful five of them as a player, and then like to watch you learn I was like okay here we go..

"Steve kerr coming up something i've been wondering is this is an incredible time or a very interesting time i've been covering this league for twenty one years you've been in this league even longer just in the sports world in general everything has changed so much in the last couple of years for wide variety reasons whether it's guns whether it's trump whether it and so there's a there's a level of engagement that that we've i don't think we've seen in our lifetimes it says something i always wonder and i don't know that anybody has the answer to this but just your opinion is this the new normal is like the stick to sports truly over no matter how many people may say that to you or to me on twitter or whatever else but is this is the new normal where whether it's you or steph or pop or colin kaepernick in these paying a stiff price for it but we've turned a corner here where no one's being even if someone's being told to stay in some arbitrary lane no one's gonna feel bound by that name live i think so and i think the times call for that you know it's you think about other other times in sports history where athletes became very vocal with time skull for the civil rights with a bill russell and kareem and lee jim brown they just kind of had enough and they realized how much power they had and that their voices could be heard and so they were really powerful in their messaging and they.
