"I mean, I just tell you this, right? I don't know if frock purdy's gonna be like a long-term starter in the NFL. What I do know is the people in that building have a lot of confidence in them. And talking to Trent Williams, who's a future Hall of Fame left tackle after that game on Sunday, the toughness purdy showed and fighting through everything. The way that he was able to operate in NFL offense, the background he had coming from a place like Iowa state and taking it to a level at that program hadn't been to before and running a pro offense there Trent said like going back to like the summer he could see the kid could be a starting quarterback and one of the things that sort of came up and this was Jimmy gets hurt and I'm just kind of going back and forth with a few niners guys like, hey, you know that sucks. You guys are down to your third quarterback. You got such a talent roster, you know? Like you go back and forth people that split that sort of stuff when major injuries happen and what I got back uniformly from the San Francisco people was don't sleep on broad party. Like over and over and over again. So again, look, I don't know if he's going to be a long-term starting quarterback in the NFL, but I can say there's a lot of confidence in that building where they don't think that the drop off from Garoppolo to purdy is going to be anywhere near what the general public thinks. Well, we're seeing that already, aren't we? We're already seeing that. When I'm in the booth with Kurt Warner, middle game of the Saturday triple header on NFL network, browns, ravens, which quarterback for the ravens in my column the game and describing the action of what do you think? I mean, I think it sounds like Tylenol is like trending in the right direction. My guess would be Lamar doesn't go. But I think it'll probably Tyler Huntley and look like this is a huge game for the ravens. They they've lost ground, of course, over the last few weeks the Bengals the Bengals are red hot. And they look like the team that got to the Super Bowl last year. So my guess would be you'll be calling in the Tyler hall as they're starting quarterback. I mean, Anthony Brown or this is a backup or he could get the start too, but your sense is, they're not going to push it with Lamar. They're going to give them one more week. I mean, I just thought, yeah, my sense is the sense I've gotten, this is going to be cautious with him. Obviously, it's a little complicated because of the contract situation. And everything that goes into that, you know? And so yeah, I think that they're going to, I don't think they're going to push Lamar if he's not ready. Here on the rich eisen show. So what is the story do you think going into week 15? Albert? I mean, what is your notebook? What are you hearing about? What is your sense? Hot seats or playoff positioning anything like that. You always have your ear to the ground. Yeah, I mean, like the hot seat like stuff. I would say that, you know, it always feels like when you're in November, it's like, well, you know, there aren't going to be very many openings. And then you get to December and there starts to be talk about this place or that place. And so, you know, obviously Indianapolis and Carolina already have openings. And they're going to run coaching searches, we'll see whether or not they give serious consideration to hold to elevating their interim coaches. Steve wilks has done a really nice job in Carolina and Jeff Saturday. Obviously, the owner loves him there. So we'll see whether or not he feels comfortable elevating him. And then beyond that, I mean, you know, the one thing that's sort of interesting about all of this is you could have a couple of one and done. And then you could have an Arizona and owner eating a lot of contract on the coach in general manager potentially. And I think it's sort of signal to changing dynamic in the NFL, where it used to be that the coach would get like three years of runway and owners wouldn't want to have to write checks for four years after they fire a coach and all that different stuff. I think the new television money is changing the dynamic a little bit. And I think the escalating price of the premier head coach is going to change some of that too. And so like Arizona, you know, Steve keim and cliff kingsburg have 5 years left on their deals. Generally, Arizona isn't a franchise that would spend. On coaches and general managers who aren't working for them anymore, but has that dynamic changed. I think it's possible, you know, Denver and Nathaniel Hackett, Houston, lovey Smith. That would be the second straight year. The Texans go one and done, you know? So I think that's what's sort of interesting about what's going to happen this year is you could see guys that have been on the job for a lot shorter or have a lot of years left in their contract giving fired where, you know, in the past, sometimes those sorts of things that made it prohibitive to get rid of a guy. What about a quarterback changes? I mean, Brady clearly seems to be at the end of his Tampa stay if he wants to stay in it. And then that would present quite an option for anybody that wants to just go all in for one year or two years. You got baker, who you had a fascinating article about how Sean mcvay got him up to speed and just threw him in the deep end. You have no, I have no idea about Stafford's long-term plan. If he's healthy enough or not, I mean, what's your ear to the ground on quarterbacks that might change in the NFL? Yes. So I mean, I think Tom is going to be an interesting one. I don't think he knows whether or not he's going to play in 2023 yet. I think if he does, it probably won't be in Tampa. And I think the two teams to wash their San Francisco and Las Vegas. I think one of the things you probably had a better appreciation for is the way he was coached in New England, how hard he was coached in New England. And how tight the operation was. And so, you know, he's got great respect for Kyle Shanahan and the niners have sort of kept that door open consistently over the last couple of years after they decided not to pursue them in 2020. So I certainly think that that could be possible, depending on how the rest of the 9 are season goes and where they're at on Trey Lance. Vegas has an important decision to make on Derek Carr. In his contract, if he, if he's on the roster, I think it's three days after the Super Bowl, then $40 million in that deal vests and becomes fully guaranteed. So if they're going to move on from him, they have to make that decision in mid February. So we'll know relatively soon on that. And the Raiders obviously with Josh McDaniels there would have the option of not one, but two guys with patriot background and Tom Brady and Jimmy Garoppolo that could be available to them. And then you mentioned the rams and Stafford. I've never gotten a sense that Matthews a guy who's going to hang around into his 40s. I just don't think that that's who he is. He's made his money these guys ring, and he's pretty beat up. Now, do I think he wants to go out like this? No. But I know the arm thing has lingered and now you've got the concussion issue. And again, this is a guy who's just taken a lot of hits. And I mean, one of the tougher guys in the NFL, he's taken a lot of hits and a lot of damage on his body. And he just wonder with him to come to a point where you're like, okay, you know, like I have accomplished what I want to accomplish, it's time to go live the rest of my life.

"Over the last two years and the guys who's just sitting there patiently mining is business waiting for his turn as the guy who gives you the best chance to win and Steve wilks is doing a good job. I feel for those two guys, man. I talked about it last week. I really wish Carolina won this game. Yeah, I'm just kind of caught up in the story there. And I've been on teams where we weren't so good and I just, yeah, I was pulling for those guys. And we're halfway through the season now, Chris. And you could say what you will about, the chiefs on the buy week and the Chargers don't look that great and the rest of the division. It's the chief's division, right? You could sit here and say that pretty much, and the bills you could pretty much say that about the AFC east, but still those coaches go to sleep thinking you never know. The only one coach that rich, people want us to talk about that. You know, they love to tweet at you. I know they do. I still think the bills are the best team in that division. And they already have the win over them to, and I think they're going to beat the jets, certainly if the same jets team that just took on the Bill Belichick patriots, the bills from buffalo are going to take care of business. But that was one whole long wind up for this pitch here that the only coach I think harder knows. He's got a home playoff game coming up in January right now is Mike variable. And the Titans and the Titans once again with Derek Henry punking the Houston Texans. The mcnair's don't own the Texans. Damn straight, it does. So my question for you is, once again, the Titans are like the yeah, but okay, team. What do you think of Tennessee? Tennessee's Tennessee's incredibly hard to kill, man. That's the best compliment I can give a football team. Mike vrable is the man. I just the guy you wish you played for. I like watching him and Ben Jones and tunnel last week. That guy cares. Like I got doesn't just care about his job. He cares about everybody else in that locker room, but he's been a player. I know he's tough. I know he pushes those guys hard. And you can see it because when they get in tough situations when the chips are down, when you start Malik Willis and you find yourself three point underdogs against Houston or whatever it was or like Houston's actually favored by the time kick-off happens, they dig deep, they find a way. It doesn't matter that Malik Willis isn't ready. And as a sidebar, that's funny because in the preseason, everybody who's coming for. No doubt. Tannehill. He's like, you know, it's just not getting over out of our skis. But Derrick Henry's run for like 50 miles against stack boxes since in the last 5 years. I think he had a 118 yards against stack box just said, you know, in the last guy to have so many, I think was him. A year or two ago, and he leads the league against loaded boxes over the last 5 years by a thousand yards or something like that. I mean, the guy is insane. I'm watching that game and I'm just saying like, I'm like, load the box, load the box, and every time, every time Houston would line up defensively, I count. And I was like, hey, they are loading the box. It's just nothing you can do about it. The guy's 6 foot 5. He falls forward for two yards every time and drags two defenders with him. He's awesome. The Titans are really tough to kill. And yeah, the only thing with the Titans are like, they're sitting there in the locker room, you know, we used to re sit in the locker room and get our ankle stayed before games and sit in the hot tub. And it'd be a TV on until like 90 minutes before the game. So they're late game, and they're watching the eagles, right? And they're watching the HA Brown. And I'm kind of wondering what guys are thinking about that move, right? Because I think the cap hits are similar with Woods of him. And you couldn't retain him. And the guy's just such a game changer. He's been a game changer in Kelly. He would have really helped this football team and they could be a contending type football team. And they might be, but you just imagine if they still had AJ Brown. It's just totally different ball game. Do conversations get sparked? Seriously, watching TV, watching other guys like that. Is it actually verbalized? Is it really just like a look that everybody knows what the look means? I think that locker room really really vibes with braves and that whole organization. So I don't think anybody's like, man, we're tricking this thing off. I just think it is kind of a look. I think it's like you look over at the guy next to you is AJ goes up and gets that ball between two steelers defenders yesterday and you're like damn. There's nothing that needs to be said, but you know, he just adds a whole other element. But the Titans are really good. And you look at the ASC picture, like I just mentioned the dolphins. They have the bears, the Texans and somebody else that that's not great over the next three weeks and a by. So they're going to go into December. They have a chance to be 8 and three going to December. And if you're a dolphin sand, you know, you talk about the bills, we talk about we talk about the chiefs with good reason. I think they're in a class above everybody else, but then there's these teams like Titan, dolphins, seems like that who are going to be in a good position, especially looking at the chiefs scheduled next month, come December. This AFC race is going to get interesting. Yeah, Miami's at Chicago home for Cleveland by home for Houston than they're at San Francisco, what a game that's going to be with mcdaniel going against his old team there and these old team going against mcdaniel and then of course next up for Tennessee is at Kansas City on Sunday Night football. You know, this team under Cliff Kingsbury is made improvement in two consecutive years. They, you know, low Starting point. They started at three wins. Yeah, he got the job. They went to 58 last year. The optics of that eight. We're not great because you mentioned the second half of the season, so You know, the Cardinals going into this year have the second longest playoff drought in the NFL behind only the New York Jets, And that is not company You want to be keeping. The concern was Kyler Murray in the second half of the season wasn't 100% health wise, and everything suffered because of it. The Cardinals need to have a better plan for when Kyler Murray is not 100%. Quite honestly, you know, you know if he's out on the field, he needs to be able to show more than he showed in the second half of last season. So those are all high on the list of my concerns. Which team on the schedule this year is going to be the toughest for them. Um, well, the Los Angeles Rams who are on there twice, Uh, since Sean McVeigh has been their head coach, he is absolutely owned the Arizona card that goes back to the tail end of the Bruce Arians era. They swept them with Steve Wilks and Cliff Kingsbury has yet to beat them and four tries. So I'm always gonna answer the Rams on that, But, uh, there's plenty of tough game take your pick, and the Niners are going to be tough. The Seahawks are always tough. I had with players got to know some of the guys. So i guess it was advantageous in that regard but ultimately yeah it more than anything and by the way i think we have lead their greg. He's he's getting better right now but remember a couple of weeks ago. We had that discussion about one and done head coaches and We're we're going down the list and we ended up missing freddie kitchens. Who's the most recent one done coach. And you know you know. "It's a big deal to sell the program how to use a head coach. Prepare for media days. I'm gonna call gus how to our league anymore You know i. It's gonna be a fine line. I i don't i don't know i don't know what the specter anticipate You know haven't been been associated with it. I'm i know the fan base. The sec is still going to turn out in full force. And i know there's going to be a big a big group of people there and we've got to do a great job of selling our program but man i'm i'm one of these guys. It wants to undersell an over the liver you know. I'm i'm still one of those old school football coaches talk about how bad we are then. Try to deliver but this day and age. If you don't hype yourself up you know if you're not your own hype train that can set you back to so it's going to be a fine line I think the best way to handle is just to be honest. And tell people exactly where i think we're at and you know we still have some question marks. I think we have some exciting pieces on the often side of the ball. But you know we still. We still got to score more points. you know you talk about running the football but in the game we lost We were not in the right side of the the scoreboard. We weren't scoring enough to keep us in the game and keep our momentum in the game and so with a quarterback returning like connor obeys lack with with the addition of looper with the addition of tyler. Beatty elijah young. We gotta be more explosive offensively. Which i think will help alleviate some pressure on the defense assata football. You mentioned. mookie. Cooper the Wide receiver already the transfer portal. Doing good things for your program I'm also curious now as we as we get set to move into that aspect of it in and talking about your team and selling your team you got a new defensive coordinator talk about you. See joins great. Nfl pedigree. what impact does that have on the recruiting trail. When you bring in a guy like that well. I think Obviously when we're recruiting everybody's dream is to play in the nfl. And and how does the college experience one translate to the. Nfl experienced the to has prepare them for that. And so when you're talking about steve wilks you're talking about a guy who spent the previous fifteen years in the nfl as a coordinator head coach position coaching. So he can really give these guys. Hey this is what they're looking for in the league. This is how you go about your daily business. You know when he's talking in front of our team to our defense i. This is what you're going to have to do to have sustained excellent in the at the next level and i think any kind of advantage that you can gain from three years four years or five years around a pro style. Football coach is only going to be benefits. You right And so that's that's really what we're selling. He's tremendous tactician Tremendous fundamental coach. He was always known for developing great defensive back coaches and he's got more experience than just about anybody else in our conference in coaching. Nfl football and so We're excited about that. You know we also added general franklin. Who was another guy defensive. Line coach and spent numerous years in the nfl. And so you know trying to really. Hey this is where you want to get to well. These guys can show you how to get there because they spend a lot of there were you also last year had the opportunity to get introduced personally although via zoom so i guess in personally to the other coaches in this you knew gusts you have a history with him some of these other names and faces new to you and you see how they interact on the zooms as you guys talk head coaching business or conference business with great sankey did any of those personalities surprise you You know. I got one opportunity to meet the group in person in then You know getting to see him around the table and in and and then see zoo. It's pretty interesting. you know either. Still guys that don't turn their cameras on zoom meetings and that kind of surprises me a little bit. I'm sitting there going. You know. I don't think if you were the head coach and having a team meeting you'd be okay with your players didn't have the the zoom camera on and i'm not gonna drop anybody's names there but But that that surprised me a little bit I will say this just like we all know when tote sheldon speaks we all listen So when when he when he don't put in his opinion or or has a comment. We all sit there and say all right. Let's let's hear what what he has to say and You know obviously we give him a tremendous amount of respect and that's respect. It's obviously earned. You're earning more. And more as i said that was a name. Years was the name that came up with other coaches. When i was traveling the league or doing zoom caused last year in recruiting a big part of it. So i'm i'm curious taking a look at your social media you've been doing a lot of time grilling to summer all right. So what. I what i say fillets in rib is on the grill is this just grilling for the family. Or is this a hidden message to recruits out there or something that i need to know about. No it's summertime appeals on monday nights. My wife Expects me to cook. And so i've taken to to just grill. And i you know i might send it out recruits and send it out on social media. Now if cleveland and kevin fancy was selecting baker mayfield that year at quarterback. He wouldn't have been the number one overall pick. Because you don't need that style. You don't need to take a quarterback for that system with the number one overall pick in the style in which they like to play which is run the ball play defense to all it. But the fact that i've inherited him. And now he's showing me that he can keep continue to be the face of the franchise. In leads the charge he falls in line for contract extension. This is the same full. Lamar jackson mark jackson gets basically thrust into the lineup. After joe flacco fails golsen playoffs. Next year torches the league gets the. Mvp goes to the playoffs. Team be i me and let the school throws itself on the mercy of the court. Even if they do that it'd probably still will take years to adjudicate very good point earlier about a home town kid. But then you've got a situation where say A still out of state says when you come here we could probably promise you this type of in l. deal and that that kind of thing does does concern me just the bidding war that could erupt for players. And i don't think it's going to be a pretty picture and i do believe that the smart schools have already probably figured out how to how to attack it and it's not going to be long. I mean we're already seeing some signs of what's going to happen here in a couple of weeks. I'm a huge fan of a drink coach. Shrink and i frankly think you know. He's got a very good stop. I think of all the people that he's hired. Steve wilks is defensive. coordinator is his best. Hire and gotten to know steve a little bit. I was with them not too long ago and he's just a phenomenal individual. His his his past history is is extraordinary. I think especially from will help him in a recruiting standpoint for those who don't know he was. He was defensive coordinator when the panthers made it to the super bowl and he was a head coach in the for arizona in the nfl. And and i think he's a strong recruiter. I think he could he. Could he could help that program and a lot of ways. I know another curtis loopers on that staff. Somebody gotten to know over the years. A lot of other really good coaches so. I think this this this year. You'll start to see some of the rewards now. I know there was a big winner to last year. Lsu a couple of other games. I think this year is going to be significant I mean. I'm not suggesting they're going to end up playing for the sec. But i think they're going to have a really good year I think so too and You know unfortunately. I i get to sailing that. This is this coaches. I among possibly possibly some few great stops and yeah yeah. I would never wish this on anyone but i think the big challenge will be to contain him there. I agree i i've heard. Why won't NFL teams hire minority coaches?
"Three head. Coaching spots have been filled this week. But none of those. Three coaches were minorities while the Rooney rule has been followed. Some are beginning to believe that minority forty candidates are not being taken seriously for the open jobs and anonymous African American. NFL Assistant Coach said that the League has quote finally shown. It's not the place as for black men to advance. It's ridiculous it's disgusting. We can sell tickets and make plays but we can't lead Shannon. Why isn't the Rooney rule role working? Well I think until skip this diversity thing yeah. Diversity is a great great to talk about but until you get someone the leadership position that says you know what. I don't just want to talk about it. I want to be about it so until you get older ships that actually wants to put some substance to this and this is what that you're GonNa get now if the general manager there's one general manager that's what minority and that's CR- Chris greer in Miami. There's zero owners that are it shouldn't say minorities. I guess because shot con radically a minority. But when you get the gist of what I what.
