Ended up in the background. If you wondering who it is. It's a podcast crew. We're just having fun today. So here we go. You're asking what this is about. Yeah. I don't understand why we're here. Doc to feel Yuma. Boy. So you call me you say, hey, man, come on down. We're going to do a podcast. I don't know. What that is my kids know that. I don't know. So I told him I was going down to a podcast, which you they said. Yeah. So no idea what we're gonna talk about that. None that makes two of us. Absolutely. No. I do hope that I'm doing this. So I said I wanna do it with you an S coup. Let's let's make some magic Lil. Let's make some magic. So we're just sitting here talking. That's what we're doing. This is just two friends talking, and we have editing power. Critical for me. Yeah. I I have entered power. Okay. Good because I'm on the internet right now. Yeah. Kid, leave us say that. Yeah. I can take stuff out but for a price. I'll take. So what I want is people to get to know, you maybe like, I know you we've been known each other hell own sh longtime right longtime long-term since the beginning of television. Yeah. Like forty seven. So I'm glad that we both do talk shows. So we're not supposed to be friends. Right. We're supposed to be competitors. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Man. We we like like a video game, we actually, mortal enemies. So how come it's never been that way between you and me, you know, what man because I think we come from same type of cloth. You say something to me a long time ago. You said you blowing out my candle Nangle make yours brighter. And I've used at so many times, and I've always given you credit for sharing that with me. And that's what a lot of people think, man. A lot of people think that if you blow somebody else up dead makes you less or if you lessen somebody that blows you up now man, you'll candle flickers your candle flicker, if y'all got a candle in a cave, and you blow here's out you disabled light coming off you'll candle partner, and I think we both kind of cut from Saint cloth. We understood that. So it just made for us to go. You know, a mutual respect for one another and. Yeah, formed friendships like that people looked at us like. We were crazy 'cause we're not only competitors supposedly on like our shows. And we started doing shows together like across networks that never been done before. And it works out. Great. And they didn't understand right. You can't go in and do that. But see why not though. Yeah. And he can't come on my show with his wife. Why not it didn't make sense to anybody? But I mean, you know, we still alive we still functioning I think we'd better forward to. Yeah. We've had fun. We well, we blew into someplace up in side of town the helicopter and had a competition up there. It's on a golf course race golf course. We had putting competitions 'cause we flew in on a helicopter. I'm not gonna say UIs. It was. Just no it wouldn't mind show. Right. Had had to get you a new man I was struggling a little bit. But you was in its off figured hailing Kengo down today. No, it's not going to go down. That's not a good thing. So look where are you? From originally mad Welsh West Virginia, I was country. Boy, my daddy was a coal miner. This is a true story. We love Welsh West Virginia when I was four because of an incident my father got involved in. And so he sent us to Cleveland, he came later and every summer I had to go back and work the farm with my uncle, and my grandfather caused my daddy steelhead animals down then he had him raise them in. There. We go down there in the fall and slaughter hogs and Ilva summertime. A hold rows of corn and indefeasible about could plow behind immune AIn, Kate. I was plowing fields man eleven years old, really Yemen. Tell me about this incident when my dad is dead. So you know, they can't get him on nothing. But I was supposed to catch a train with my mother. My mother was very fair complected. She could pass for white. And so she could ride the train and this is nineteen sixty. Sixty one and we were in a train station down in West Virginia. I don't know the exact place it was, but they had coloreds only water fountains in whites only water found now's a little boy. And I got away from my mother went over there. I'm drinking water. I can't read. So I'm drinking from whites only waterfowl and a woman saw me doing it and grabbed me and slap me and said, you don't drink from his water phone when my mama saw that. Now was it mama jumped on the lady, they call the sheriff sheriff came jumped on my mother, and then they took my mother, but they left me to train station. I just sat there so old black porter. He couldn't do none. At the time. He just waited too close. And he asked me what my name was who who my mom and dad who was not told him, and he put me on back at his flatbed truck and drove me to my daddy's house Medani looking at me like what you do in here because you post Bill on tray with your mom. So the Puerta told him what happened? And so my mother came in late on the evening. She was. Visibly upset. And so my daddy told everybody pack up y'all got to lead tomorrow. And so we packed up to go to DC to stay with her sisters before we moved over to Cleveland couple of days later, he went to the sheriff's house an incident occurred and did he joined us later. Yeah. That's how we got to Cleveland. That's really a true story. So was there a new sheriff after that? Yeah. Yeah. Head work out some things race. We get some applications in sheriff didn't you long to well when he got over there now. Now, see my daddy is sort of funny man 'cause my daddy. He always told me and my brothers. I had two older brothers. Right. He told us he say, you can't talk back to your, mama. You can't raise your voice to your mother. See my father had a simple rule at our house. We don't do back and forth. We just do fourth Ainhoa. No back. So that was that was out of the question. So you can't talk back to your, mommy, rage voice to your momma. You can't ever touch your mom. If you do anything in do anyone? I'm hurt you real bad. We we believe that that apply to everybody sheriff included. Yeah. So he went over there. And it got got out of hand. So he did get out of town though, he had to, but the beauty of it was there was no internet. Franken Prius ain't nobody know half. Oh. So can't work out for what did he DNA? None at one no forensic science. You Hooper, man. Pretty good. If nobody saw it you could just walk out. They didn't know how to do footprint. Samples back. Dean, those were the good old days. So you put print news ass. It was okay. Probably a lot of black people had size Levin's back, then that's probably, but it's interesting because you are actually named after a famous television cop, right? Yeah. Broddrick Crawford Broderick Crawford from highway fifty four patrol Broderick Crawford. Yeah. I was going to be named the other choice was Brian Keith. My mother was going to be named me Brian Keith. So I was destined to be old white, man. Yes. What woodley? What day was aiming till? I was going to be overweight, white, man one way or the other. Yeah. Because I've never Broderick Crawford. Because the thing you remember out here is you you couldn't understand a word. He said you remember that he is real fat guy with jails and get on and he'd get on a microphone in he'd go. Nobody could understood what he said. But then everybody showed up. Yeah. And so he he was on highway patrol. I can't believe that. Yeah. Did you know who he was hail known? He told you now, I didn't know I got older and found out who he was because the show state owned for a while. And we watching TV my momma said I named you have to him. My daddy would just get him walk out the room. She said, it's a guess setting. What he wanted to know not but mold brother was already named after him. So I didn't get that. So you worked in the fields. Yeah. Did you work in the minds? No, not never father was a coal mine. You were an auto worker though, you work in factory. Yeah. After a flunked out of college rapidly. I'm talking about I went in and started nosediving at an alarming pace. I had actually been at three years and steelhead freshman credits at twelve credits when they finally sent a letter to the house and after three years. Yeah. Had twelve credits. Are doing. Well, the way I figure it is. If you take incomplete it didn't affect your grade point. So I kept with three point three that way for twelve hours. Yeah. Just a handle hours. So after a flunked out of college I worked at Ford Motor Company on assembly line and foundry. So this was at Kent state. Yeah. Ken state nineteen seventy four. But did you went to West Virginia university? Now, everybody say idea, but I didn't you never win. No, twelve hours. Didn't get you in there. Now, you didn't qualify you really. They actually ran checks on you down. You have a transcript. Yeah. They look thing. Like that followed me around. No bill. So what did you do for three years? If you only hit twelve hour. No tell you, man. Like college was greatest experience ever happened to me because you look in that. And this is honest tall. You looking at a kid to come from the country. I had been to a all black elementary school all black junior high all black high school. I never attended school with anybody other than black people know Latinos, no whites. No, nothing. So when I went to Kent state, and my first room, I stayed in a quad I had three white roommates. And it was culture shock for them. Because I was deeply immersed in my blackness solar, wouldn't it was no shakin me loose. They had and it was like really it was too. And my roommates was really cool, man. John McDowell and a guy named Steve from Walston, but it was really weird because two of my roommates had never ever talked to a black person. Seriously, had never talked to a black person. And now they live with one. So they were in shock complete. Yeah. Because you're not exactly laid back now where you the same way. Then get you a little bit mo-. Really? Yes. So this is your dial down. Oh, the Dow down Steve Harvey. What is it? I got money. Steve yet isn't a tone it down for you lose everything to a lawsuit. Okay. I had none at that before. Okay. You know? I was a nice guy though. But I just didn't. Oh, you know, man. I didn't I didn't know none of the rules, man. How did I didn't know? So I didn't have a lot of social skills 'cause everything idea was from my neighborhood at that don't transfer to college. So this is the gut money. Steve got some fetching up. Steve where you you understand? Yeah. Yeah. So I learned so Kent state really helped me man because those guys taught me a lot, you know, I was always gifted as a talker. You know, even I had a stuttering problem school. Once I got past that, I really did learn how to be pretty persuasive with conversation, but. But I learned man how to problem solve into Goshi eight in college because I couldn't do it the way we did it backwards grew up. Everything was a fight while grew up college. You can't do that. You you get suspended. Yeah. Will you were boxer too? Right. Yeah. Yeah. Did you enjoy that? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That was good until I fought this Puerto Rican do. That ended in a fault wall. Two-way Dow's one forty seven get out of navy. Paul Jill dude on post to fight don't show supporter Rican kid in ring. He wants sixty eight it. I didn't think that mattered. I say, yeah. Fighting midday. This do beat he beat he beat my s so bad. This Stu beat me. I never been hit like that in my life. Does do was punching b-. So he was such a compact fighter. I was dancing and move. I was touching him. With that jab. I was nice. He was just walking walking in TIMMY, man. And when he got close I said Mendes do just going to take these shots. You know, we got gear on we got hit good. So he just taking shots at boom. I'm a win this fight on points. No surgery. I got that corner. And he faked and not did like that. He came close with a right cross. I stuck my head out to ropes was looking for my family members Ali won't no part of this. I understand why towel didn't come in at that point. Because I needed some in that ring because I didn't want I didn't even want back in their man. Let's get you out Bostick were head on. Like tears in my eyes. Do hit hit me so hard and my father get it. They're fighting fighting went back in their man. I did everything I could just do hit me so hard, and I was that stopped. It was five years of fighting over in one fight that was enough for you, not a father when it was driving home. I say, hey, dad. This does not what I do. Clearly, clearly, this is not what I gave it up. So you ain't will be no fighter. Now. Did you were you there? Now, I'm going to be a fighter, but it was a good decision on me because I'll take punches. Well. Whatever happened to that guy. Oh, did he ever turn into a big fighter? Eating now. Thank in me was. Launching points. A launching point for me. I don't what it did for you. No, it was it was way out for me. No, he came in my life to get me here. I don't know what happened to him. I don't know what he's doing. Now. Nothing. Did you ever think you were gonna wind up in Hollywood and doing all this stuff because you sold insurance? You you you did a lot of jobs you were carpet, cleaner your mailman. Yeah. Carried a mailbag yet at that. Didn't last long. I didn't make the probation cut. Oh that didn't last very long. Now. I l look check incident. A lot of stuff happened to me. Those kinda game changing for me house. I was towing metered mail now, delivering meals the first of the month, you know, in in in the hood, I at a month. Everybody gets a check I got all these checks people out on a porch waiting on these chicks, man. I just thought that if I'm gonna bring you yo check. I told people I could bring it early. If I could get a cut they got a little thing that's something called embezzlement fraud. So they didn't want you bring into checks anymore. Not dead. Didn't last long at all. Yeah. That was a disaster. Funny cleaning carpets AJ Jamal who's a comedian today. He and I owned a carpet cleaning company together. Oh, yeah. Yeah. He's Muslim and we had a real joint. She showed ripped joint. Yeah. We, you know, and who had you just made where he was a Muslim and we had barbecue place. Eight never eaten pork ever Everton. Now ended up had a real joint in Cleveland that close people rap Brown to build a massive, man. We send a lot of barbecue to do that was in Ness Celena barbecue was actually selling drugs and the line was for the drugs and not barb not to barbecue. Now. So that didn't work out. I'm telling you true store, man. My last day of college in seventy seven we was sitting on the hill with this guy named Arsenio hall. You know, we went to college together, we should call him trigger cause, you know, we call him trigger cause he looked like a horse and a cine was sitting there and all he told everybody was telling what they was going to do on our senio was getting out. He said I'm gonna go to Hollywood. And everybody started laughing at senio. We've sit on Taylor hall. He'll in everybody saw laughing us. He said I'm gonna go to Hollywood. And I was only one sitting there wasn't. Half ounce villi man, how you going to do that would just go mental be a Stahl Arseneau said in nineteen seventy seven he's going to be a star and everybody laughed at it. I was curious about them because I've been wanting to be on TV since I was t- in how I would get ahead no idea and so fast forward, probably nineteen eighty eighty one something like that. I got a job at displays. Call Lincoln electric that I hate it, man. I worked midnight shift from twelve to eight in the morning. I'm sitting on the edge of my bed and Don Christmas rock concert solid goal. One of them had two little girls. They say lazy. They got through dancing. Please. Welcome from Cleveland, Ohio are senio hall, and you don't nobody's name. Arsenio. So I went are single and Arsenio hall walked out. And so I grabbed my phone, you know, wouldn't know cellphones Graham phone aecom, abyss free, a man trigger on TV are sues on TV he had his sleeves pushed up. He was on the solid goal. Don Kushner's rock concert, and he was telling jokes. And he was doing his joke about these black pilots on an airplane and stuff day was doing. I was sitting there going whole time. He was talking. He said to she said that he should say dis. And when he walked off I sit on the bed, and I was crying tears coming down my face 'cause it's do had deal. What he said he was going to do it. I couldn't believe my life was turning out this way. I wouldn't. I wouldn't in Hollywood. I know how to get on TV. I'd flunked out of college. And I'm working in a factory discount be my life. Man discount be it. And it was an Arsenio was on TV little did. We know that he's actually. Nancy Wilson's nephew. And so she hired him to open shows him. And that's how he cultivated his skills as a standoff, right? Yeah. This is actually are sending bills old stage. Now, this is where they did the Arsenio hall show. See that's why I'm telling you story two. That's right. Yeah. See now, you know, how he got here. Yeah. So for your listen S Laverne, she's a producer and she's got a microphone and timing in. Yeah. I didn't know. Thanks. Yeah. That yet helped me out. So you watch him on TV. And so did I inspire you to come out here? Well, it did man. But I still didn't know man because it was like forgot the executive could have been eighty one. I was just I was in parliament eighty one. And it took me a while because it was in my subconscious, so heavy that this guy had actually said he's going to go to Hollywood. And he did it. I thought that was incredible man and so fast forward, I. Sign up. This guy says he knows a way to be rich, and he came to my house, and he showed me this program with Amway. And so I get involved in Amway, and I go to a Amway convention, and all of a sudden it turned out to be grazed thing happened to me because it taught me about positive attitudes. And I started buying books like Dexter wins. His winner's circle of power of positive thinking about Norman, Vincent peel. The magic of thinking big they introduced me today. And then that's when I started putting together dream board. And how to plan envision I knew I never knew anything about that. So I started putting down on paper. What I wanted to be an actually started believe in that it could happen. And that's when I first started writing down, I'm going to be on the top stand ups in the country. I'm we'll get on TV one day. But I had no clue. So I just kept working jobs man and till nineteen eighty five came long and all got name AJ Jamal. I was writing some jokes for him. I didn't know what he was doing with him. But he pay me. Ten dollars a joke that I kept. Right. And Joe may funny. What would you tell about this? I write he give me ten bucks. One day. I'm over his houses going named Gladys Jacobs comes over and she says you got right. And he's Joe he's a funniest guy to comedy club. I said the funniest guy where she said at the comedy club. I said what's that? She said you've never been to a comedy club. Why are you writing these jokes warm? I said for ten dollars. I don't kill what he do with them. She said, why don't you tell them you'll sell and I'll see what how. And she said, I'm will come pick you up next Tuesday night and take you to charities comedy club cowgill falls. So this is a Tuesday night October eighth nineteen eighty-five she drives me down. And I'm sitting in the back and she says sign up for next week 'cause you're going to be a comedian next week. I said, okay. So I signed up on the list, and they have ten guys go up and I'm sitting in. I'm fascinated these dues telling jokes. She said how come you not laughing because every joke they toll. I was rewriting. It may should've said this. I was always trying to think of ways you could be funnier. So when I write a joke for Jamal. I get another ten dollars nine people. Go up, right? To announce the name STAN pie. I know all this because it changed my life. He said, listen, somebody just council we're gonna go to next week's lists where Steve Harvey. And the girl had bought me some chicken wings and grapefruit juice at I looked at her. I said, hey, it's dude in hit got the same name. I got she said you a stupid soem bitch. She said, that's you. I said, I ain't ready. She said is going up there. He said, Steve if you hear why yet, and they kept clapping, and I'm a sucker for that. They clap in for me. So I'll ran up on stage. And I walked upon state in first thing, I said was hey, look, I appreciate y'all clapping, but I ain't post to be hitting next week, and they started laughing. And then I say, I ain't got nothing for you. She said tell them when used to box and owes going, right? This joke for Jamal about this do name. But now Taylor that I had fought that ended my career, and I told a little box in store in the people started laughing, and they're not just told some males. I had wrote another joke for Jamal that I hadn't sold him yet. So I told that one, and then I just made up another store in told that and so I was overweight, and I wa-. Walked off. They borders backup data clap off. I want amateur night. And they paid me. Fifty bucks October eighth nineteen eighty five. I went to work the next day October ninth nineteen eighty five and quit. My job really just like that. Where were you working in at Commonwealth life insurance? That's when you were working live at you. Yeah. So you just quit your all in this. I was born a new, okay? And you have never taken a job outside of entertainment since then I've never done nothing. I never worked in the mall Neville now suffered you know, what? I mean. I yeah. I made like three thousand dollars second. Yeah. Made about fifty two hundred thirty I made almost seven thousand dollars and my ex wife wouldn't happy with not at not drove home one day from gig. I've been going thirteen weeks. I drove up and house. We was written this little house. It was boarded up, and they were gone. And so you know, what up to Maine laws? How said they were angry 'cause I've been gone all this time. So I had another gig in two days. I didn't see my kids, and my wife, I drove back out to the gig next thing, you know, I'm homeless, man. I got nothing got nowhere to go. You know? So I suffered. But I I was in the biz. Though. Yeah. That was it. So what were you making a night when you would go on a road and go to these comedy clubs how much money will you make of between fifty or seventy five fifteen seventy five bucks. Yeah. Is stuff the road games with fifty everything I did locally up into that was twenty five dollars twenty five bucks. So you go for fifty bucks. But the crazy part about me. I would take the gig anywhere. I would drive from Cleveland the mobile Alabama for seventy five dollars, but you know, gas back was forty five cents a gallon, and I will go, and then I would stay down there because I didn't have enough, and if I put together three gigs that I made a hundred fifty I was seeing a hundred dollars home 'cause I couldn't put it in a tank and drive all the way back to Cleveland. And then the next gig and Florida, so I was sitting a hundred home, and I kept the fifty and I had to answer machine in my momma's attic. And that's how I check C if I gig and every time I got a chunk I was sending home to my ex wife and key. It's and I just. Up to fifty in you, you can make an fifty a week you're going to be homeless. Yeah. At Chao pretty quiz. I was in the eighties. Right. Yeah. Yeah. You know? Was there a time that it made a big jump when you went from like fifty dollars a gig to serious money or did it stair step yet Yemen? It stair step. What I did was I gotten pretty prolific at comedy club in as a host. And what idea was bought a box of those golf pencils and index cards and even as the opening act, I would pay a waitress a dollar to put the index cards at every table in the little golf pencil, and when I will go up on stage. I we're going to say, hey, look, I don't want you do nothing. But if you like me tonight, write your name and address on index card just leave it at funny at the end tonight. I go collect all of them when I would come back to that town. You know stamps was a dime. I would go through a file pick out to fifty cars to say they liked me. And I just used they own address they own handwriting. I just put hey, I met. Comedy club, October third through the ninth. Hope you come back. They will come back and go. Hey, man, we here. And so I start I started making myself a drought at way. And so it took a Bruce as down at the comedy club to say, hey, man, you opening act you will feature act which was thirty minutes and all these people coming to see you. I'm ahead line. You and Bruce as gave me my first headlining gig four thousand dollars a week. Now that was years later now I didn't get that to probably eighty nine ninety. Maybe really. Yeah. So it was eighty nine hundred ninety before you made a thousand dollars a week. Oh, yes. Oh, yes, said, yeah. Wow. Hurting, man. But you know, man, I was overjoyed 'cause I was doing what I knew I was born to do, you know? So what's the different kind of currency? Right. I mean because you're getting the money, but you're doing what your passion was felt it, and it's like man a thousand bucks. But I was meeting headliners that was making. Twenty five hundred five thousand a week. A man Duane I met Sinbad amid Sindbad on a park bench in Birmingham, Alabama. He was sitting at a park bitch. Our sin bay was big in comedy clubs. I'd see his pitch on walls. And I was at the park 'cause I was going to state at at night in my car and a pool up, and I see Sinbad, and I won't say man, I'm Steve Harvey new your soon bed. Hey, hey, soy star clutching his bag. Yeah. What you need post. He had just gotten his money in cash in a garbage bag. I didn't notice at the time. So I'm walking to a guy with a garbage bag. I see what you're doing. He said I'm gonna catch a bus, man. I'm going to Florida us Yama comedian to he said, well your next gig. I said Florida. Out of here. Mcgeown I'm talking to Sinn bay. He said, oh, hey, man. I give you two hundred dollars. You drive me to Florida two hundred. Really? So he got in the car, and I drove Sinbad from Birmingham down to West Palm Beach, Florida for two hundred dollars, which was huge for me. And he schooled me the whole way down really eight taught the business to me. And he told me he was a draw. He told me high did it, and I just listened man. A symbolic would probably win most important people for me at that time 'cause he gave me hope because in his trash bag. He had thirty two thousand dollars seriously cash thirty two thousand bucks trash bag. Yeah. Sitting in the park, and he lucky he is unlucky. I'm about thirty years old right now 'cause seventeen he would have been missing thirty two thousand dollars. Money. Finished big up for me. But I had a vision in a plan by the and, you know, so I just said ok cool. Let me figure out how to make this. So when you will the Florida with him. This was what year probably maybe round eighty nine so nice when you start to actually start to make some money. Yeah. This after listened to him and Bruce as gave me a shot at comedy house in Birmingham. He gave me a thousand dollars idea. So wail that he bought me back four months later. I go I wrote a whole new show. So I had another forty five and every time he bought me. I had a new forty five, and I was I could write jokes man clogged by myself. What was the most important thing? Sinbad told you was there something that stuck out that changed the way you approach the game. Don't turn down no gigs taking wherever he said. Look man this business right here. What good is that you to sit at home 'cause there's no school for comedy. You could take lessons for everything you can learn how. Fly playing fix it. Call you can take acting lessons drum less than sex phone, piano lessons. You can go to school to be a doctor. You can learn how to build engineer. You can go to school be a cameraman director ain't no school for comedy. There's nothing you can go do to become a comedian. You have to be born this way. So the only school for comedy is to stage, you have to go there as many times as you can't he says, so if somebody off your one hundred twenty five for the week, and you've been getting to fifty you not gonna go get to one twenty five. So you go sit at the house and gives zero or go to school and get one twenty five he said mandate paying you to learn the craft. Never forget that. And that was it. I took every gig. I didn't care what it paid. If I was off a tick the gig. That was the greatest advice. He told me that hustle has remained in me sister. I'll vouch for that. We know each other on know that you're a hardest working guy ever. I mean, you you do and when you do. You're all in. I'll that you are all in on everything you do a, you know, feel we've talked about this 'cause we we know each other really closely. So I'm not the smartest guy, but you're not going out hustle me. You not going out work me. So I may not make what everybody else make on a gig here and there, but I'm gonna put them together to whack and have some, and that's that's been a blessing for me and a curse for me. You know that probably done some deals I would have been better. If I was a better business, man, I could made a lot more. But the hustle side of me still. I rather make something that nothing you came out. Okay. Yeah. I'm all right. Thank you. All right. I saw you out on a boat couple times in the Mediterranean. I was there. Let's dare we tied up to each other. Yeah. Yeah. You party a little bit different though. You got your free in town money different. You know? Yeah, right now. Yeah. Yeah. He did a met him. Yeah. I think your boat was pretty good size tick all a half. But I was there. Yeah. You can pour mouth later. So you get to Hollywood win. When did you finally get here and do a gig in Hollywood? Was it a show? What did you do? Not have my first moment in Hollywood was a TV show called me and the boys ABC I had gotten on Showtime at Apollo in ninety one at that was that was my turn back moment. I was talking to Dion Sanders one time, and he said man, everybody in they life. Gotta turn back moment. Everybody has a moment where they could turn around and go back. He said the problem is most people do he says, what was your turn back moment? And I was in a hotel. I was homeless and I was washing up in a hotel. I used to like to go to light Ritz Carlton four seasons to wash up because they had him bathroom doors when all the way to the ceiling and floor. So it was private it. Couldn't look up under there, and they had towels rolled up in baskets. So the way I would bay this. I will get the basket run hot water under all the towels into basket. Take them into stall shut the door and wash up then our wait make sure nobody was out there. I go out there and get to other basket road hot water under take DNA resolve and that was my bath. And so I made sure always stayed in parking lots with hotels that had debt. One morning man convention was in town, and I had got all it'll wash clothes under the hot water. And I took the soap, and I was soaping up, but a convention had led out for breakfast. And when I got soaked up people just kept coming. They just did kill and they never stopped. And he just kept coming man. I was going Jesus. And the soap Estar new dry on me. And I let the toilet seat down. I'm sitting on the lead, man. And I just started crying. I can't take this. No, more mcquaid. I'm gonna call him a father ask him kinda come back home and stay open addict for three months till I get a job. I'm gonna quit you turn back. Well, that was my turn back moment. And so all day just dried people notice how close so I just put my clothes on man. I had draft soap all over me, man. And I was crying. I got him a car, and I went to the pay phone, and I was gonna call my father. But I was in like, Pensacola, Florida thing and that was the fifteen hours from Cleveland. So I said, well, let me see if I can call my answering machine. See if I can pick up a gig before I quit. So I have by fifty seventy five dollars before I call my dad, I call and get a message. Hey, Steve Harvey is Chuck sudden with Showtime. Mcdill paulo. We saw terrific tape of you. We love you. We think you hysterical if you can get to a hall limit Apollo theater on Sunday. We'll put you on TV wait a minute, man. This is all I've been waiting on. I'm I'm on TV click call me back at this number if you're valuable Sunday, it's Thursday. I got thirty five dollars. I can't make it to New York. So a hang up the phone, and I'm sitting there, man and tears now, I'm really crying because do for the first time called me and said, I could be on TV but dog I don't have no way to get there. I said man, I've been wanting to be on TV man to commit shot. I got thirty five dollars. I got no friends. I can call nothing, man. I left Cleveland left everybody. So a semantic call you fall the man in this mess right now. I said hold on let me call and see if he said this Sunday. So I called back Chuck Sutton, Steve Chuck Unsal historical. Shape over look I got opening for you Sunday night in Harlem at the world famous Apollo theater if you could make it call me back at this number. I said, yeah, he said this Sunday, and I got ready to hang up, but you've been back in the day. If you had another voicemail when you put the code in. It would beep, but then you had another message. So I clicked over to the second message. He said Steve Harvard is Tom sober with comedy caravan. I don't know how close you out of Jacksonville, Florida. But I got a date for you tomorrow night pays a hundred and fifty bucks if you can get to bay meadows drive punchline theater, I got a hundred and fifty four you tomorrow just a one night replacement. I'm impulsive cold. I'm three and a half hours away. I called Tom Sobel. I say man, I can get there Boone. I drive a cane call Chuck yet. 'cause I gotta make sure there's real 'cause you get to a lot of games will the guy showed up. So I'll get there. I do really well to gap pays me. Two hundred fifty. He says listen you better than a guy we got coming in. If you stick around the mall night, I'm gonna give you another hunt. Hundred fifty that's Saturday. I got three hundred dollars. This is more important right now than anything. So I said, yeah, sodium Saturday, I called shook Sutton. I said, hey man is dead gig steel available. He said is certainly is. But almost booked it completely. Oh, but I'll put you on the last show. I said I'll beat out. So I made one hundred fifty that night. I call Eastern Airlines that used to be airlines at a special run Jacksonville ninety nine dollars to New York. Everything owned in two bags I fly to New York. I get eleven o'clock in the morning. I don't go on to eleven at night. But I I gotta get New York this ninety nine dollars. So I get to the back door theater said I'm the comedian tonight. He said, okay, we'll see you tonight a semantic on the way to go, man. I I'm this twelve can I just go sit in there. He said man, I can't you wondering around this theater in here. Awesome. Man. I promise you if you just let me in here, I ain't gonna move. He said, well, the comedians is on the sixth floor. He said do not lead at room. He said momma had hurt you if you lead at room, he's big ass, dude. And so I believe him. So I went upstairs on sixth floor. I'm starving, man. So about three I come down. He's hey, man. They're not tell you not come out that room that's bathroom up there. What you won't. I said man, if I could just buy me a piece chicken assump-, man, I'd say I don't go to eleven I got eat. He some go to stolen comeback. I want storm. Come back. I go upstairs. The comedian started coming in the first show started at six so I'm in a room of stairs. And I'm meet this do name, Dwayne Johnson. A meet another dude named deal. Hubay? I meet this guy named Jamie, FOX, we all sit there. We all know each other. We introduced it. We scared to Apollo theater. No. Yeah. Liberal you office as it was ugly, man. So the show started and Dwayne Johnson Gabu deal, Hugo DA good, Jamie, Foxx got booed. I'm knicks. He said no comedian has done that on this stage in years. He said we're going to have you back. He called me back in two weeks. And then after that Sinbad was to host of the Apollo theater Mark curry was to host amateur night. He had just gotten a TV show. Call hanging mR Kupa. So he figured he didn't need the Apollo, no more. They said we need you to come in host amateur night one night to see if you can survive crowd. I went up to a keeled, and I stayed on stage. That was the key stayed on stage. I would not let the warm up act. Do it. I. Kept a crowd hot. And they love me, and I'll became I ended up being the longest running host to Showtime to Paolo. But my turn back moment almost happened to me an almost quit had I went to my father's house. I wouldn't be sitting here today. But you know, God has a funny way of you know, my mom was Sunday school teacher. So I just knew you know, a guy never been late. He's never too late. And I just hung in them, and I didn't turn back in. That's what started at all Showtime to follow the chip it rolling. Yeah. Man. Did you get a decent paycheck for that? See people thought I was making a lot of money. I had a lot of friends after that. But I was just making eleven hundred show but eleven hundred show for me. Yeah. Talk being a comedy club all week if I could get a thousand so one show, and we was doing photo shows a night. So I would finish the week with twelve thousand dollars stuff like that. And then Chuck son got meal just for laughs. I went to New York and got just for land. I went to Montreal and got on just for. I night almost stage. ABC sees me. Tell me to come to the hotel room. Friday, I go to a hotel room, Mike Bartlett that did business a fast Fabi sees Robin Flynn and another lady poom in the room. And it got said, listen, we're just gonna do this quick. 'cause a lot of people are gonna wanna talk to you his check for fifty thousand dollars is called a holding deal. If you accept it. You can't talk to anybody else. I got a pin. No who. How much thought? Why duty duties I'm gonna do this fifty though I'm I'm gonna do this fifty. And I don't know how I'm working. I'll probably do know. But I'm gonna try to get this. Check cashed the fugutives cashed my life in a change never heard a fifty thousand dollars. So I signed the paperwork in the room. I was with this girl. She said you need a lawyer. You say what you need to do this mind your day on the switch you need. And why are you talking anyway me, and you ain't going this is not going anywhere because obviously you don't make quality business decisions. So you and I have no future. She was really right on needed a lawyer. But I needed fifty thousand more than I needed a lawyer so assigned in that room, and they cut me a check on Friday night at the four seasons in Montreal for fifty grand for fifty grand and I belong to ABC for fifty grain cleared, get cleared. And so I didn't care if they call me, I got fifty thousand dollars fifty thousand thousand dollars nineteen Ninety-three fifty grand you're thinking, this is it. Of arrived fit. Thousand. Yeah. Even if I ain't arrive only I'll been here. I'm Ben I'm rich a little bit. Yeah. But they did call day calls. You did a show. They gave me me and the boys and I came out here. And they said man, you're terrific. It's going to be great where to build a show around. You Steve Steve tower had video stole call tower video and I had three kids three boys. I was single my wife had passed and her mother was living with us. Madge, Sinclair bless her. She was my mother-in-law. She taught me how to come. When I got to know how to act I'd never read a script in my life. They gave me a script field is says Steve crosses to refrigerator. I was reading that. St. crosses to to refrigerate. I was reading the stages AB. They will mortar FAI, and so they had these since I had kids on the show. They had grown up sitting in for the kids because they were in school. So it's black chick named Cassie Davis who is huge on the Tyler Perry platform. She plays vans wife on all the shows. She came to me, she say, she said, why you from I say Cleveland, she said what you fund the country. Ancient I'll say, yes. Wore poker. I said watch West Virginia to out from Holly springs, Mississippi, and she looked at me. And she said, oh, distant most money you ever made a said. Yeah, she said, well, they gonna find you. They're gonna take all this money from you, if you'll learn how to act she say, where did you learn how to act I said, I ain't she said why'd you take the job a second. They gave me fifty thousand dollars, and they're paying me forty five thousand a week. She said, well dangling keep paying you. I said, well, how many you think I can get out of. She said after this pilot, they not putting this on TV. So she traduced me to Kim feels mother chip Hurd. We got finished with rehearsal. They said well Steve just settled down tomorrow. Relax, you a bit nervous. We could tell and I'll tell you when the meeting over in the corner going disguise socks. He's the worst. Chip heard. Her name was chip fields met me of my hotel on avenue of the stars. And she set with me from four thirty that evening to six AM the next morning and made me go over line by line by line and taught me how to act I was. I was talking like I was on stage because I thought that's what they wanted. Hey, what you doing over there by that? Don't why are you crazy? She said, do you have a regular voice? I said, no they hired me. 'cause I'm a comedian. She said act like you would talk to if you were talking to one of your kids, and I didn't know and she taught it to me and the next day. I. Came to work and everybody was going. Some most amazing turnaround above say that if it wasn't for chip she came on my talk show last year. I just do they're crying all this woman and just cry. She was the only reason I stayed on this show Helen the Shogo one year. But I made a forty five thousand times twenty two. Yeah. But I didn't know you supposed to pay taxes. That was nobody mentioned that I want you cut. My check I for you took what you want. So I I was I spent a lot of money. I didn't know and it only lasts one year 'cause I was on TV with my buddy, Tim Allen who had home improvement, and they had a deal with the executive producer Matt Williams that his show was in the top ten. He could own the time slot behind it. Which was me and the boys my show finish number twenty one highest rated new show on ABC, but he wanted time slot. So they came and told me they would take mush off that they replaced me with Tony danza Hudson street. So this is don't come back. Again. I finished twenty one. They put Tony dance on Hudson street. He finished number sixty six. That was a trade off. So I was off TV. But that wasn't the last time you were on TV because you I mean, there was another sitcom you did right yet. Steve Harvey show called Steve. Yeah. They came to me tad harbor came to me, and I went to him after they took me off TV. And I said man, I show wanna own a house, and I have found a house in Dallas, Texas that cost one million dollars. But I didn't have credit as so ado said if you give me a third down three hundred thousand I give you this house. Emmy, and you worked payments out oursel-, I say how long I got. He said you got to the end of the week. I got on a plane flew to LA set at the ABC offices over there for two straight days. Waiting to see Ted harbor. This lady said, Mr. Harvey UK just meet him like that. Thank God to and I wouldn't hallway to get some water. He came out officer, Steve what are you doing? You said Ted how you doing? Come on down talked him. So I said man, I need a hold in deal. He said well didn't Fred white here. Tell you. I'm often you a hundred and twenty five thousand dollars. I said that ain't enough. He said that's not enough. He said it was just a holding deal. We're going to explore a sad needed bigger than that. He said what's going on? I said look man on by a house, a save, you cut me a check for three hundred thousand I can go by this house assess lease man, y'all tick me off TV I was number one show, y'all. Hey, and he looked at me, man. He said come come here. Tomorrow at twelve o'clock, I came back the next day, Ted harbor gave me a check for three hundred thousand is a best guy and television that I know I flew back to Dallas bought my first house. I ever owned was a million dollar house. Well, that was first house. I have only know nothing about it taxes all that. But owned a house, and then the WB was born in they sold my deal to the WB. And that's how I got to show the sitcom with me Cedric entertainer that lasted seven years. Yeah. That was a good run. Oh, really good. You made some serious money off of that. Because that state on the air and went to syndication syndication Ghassem syndication money started. Adding it up doing the right thing seemed like I can stay on TV seven years. Look like the cut off with me shit. Thanks, seventy go see made enough. Well at this point. I mean, your host and everything on television, not hosting my show, but other than that, you're hosting your radio show, your talk show family feud, celebrity family feud, little big shots, spin off little bigshots forever. Young Steve Harvey funder dome Showtime at the Apollo since two thousand fifteen emission universe pageant. I mean, this what you call piecing together. Yeah. That's hustling. Sindbad don't turn down, no gigs. Man. Piecing it together. That's for. Sure. Yeah. Are you having fun? I mean, man, really how can I beat this? You know, guys like us we wake up every day to do what we was born to do. I mean, look, man. And then they cut a check at end of the day. I don't care what you do man. I'm just telling jokes, really, you know, my radio show, I'll play music until jokes family feud. I'm just telling jokes. I don't really I can't him these questions and answers, you you're not gonna know it's family. Feud is a show about surveys who tunes in survey. Exactly. Top one hundred people. What's your favorite ingredient in buttermilk? Candy. See now mean you need to have a discussion butter milk now that dimmer eight on the board, candy an home. I got why did you say candy? I don't know Steve the little yellow pieces in no that's butter. And then I just turned it into a comedy show. And that's all it is. And we get paid to do this having a great time. Yeah. People don't know. But you do several of those day. Right. Oh, yeah. Yeah. I made none. It is easy. You know what I mean? I do three talk shows day. I do when I I d it family feud. So I could pack it in my schedule. We did it in Orlando because I told him I wouldn't coming out to LA to work 'cause my radio show was in New York and Atlanta, and I'm not coming out here causing the cost of living to do family feuds. So they did it in Orlando. I would get off the radio show Thursday night and flato Orlando. I taped Friday Saturday and Sunday in Orlando at universal I tape h shows Friday, eight Saturday and eight Sunday, I had a twenty minute lunch. I tape eight episodes in one day, I did twenty four shows in a weekend. And how many do you do year one hundred and eighty wow every weekend idea twenty four shows. So the way I did it was I would pick out twelve. Suits. I would take the first suit. And I will put a shirt and tie with it. Then after I liked it. I will take their shirt and tie and put another shirt and tie with it. So when I got an I would do that with twelve suits. So when I got down there, they didn't have a wardrobe person for me that knew how to iron to close I will back them up paying about this why they mean fit online and board. So this little white lady was traumatized. It hangs off the board. I'll do it. So I would wait go in late Friday night and started ironing my clothes, and I'd hang him on the rack in order. So I would just go changes suit shirt and tie change. And then once I did to twelve I was start back at the beginning. Like, I had a lot of wardrobe, and I just boom twelve and twelve and that's how I did twenty four shows weekend our crawl into work Monday morning and be dead. How much time between shows helmet? You take you to turn. I just soon. I could change. So ten minutes you back out fifteen tops. And then like base started came up with this thing what changed audience it took them, thirty minutes to change audience. I started taping at ten AM. I wouldn't finish to midnight. It's hard to stay fresh. Right. It was hard, man. It was the hardest thing I've ever done. Okay. People are going to be mad at me. If I don't ask don't ask about the Miss Universe pageant when? The wrong name. I know the back story on this. But you gotta tell people. You know, man, I'm really bright gas. You got screwed. You got screwed on jail. Meet that it see it can never happen again. But I learned something so we had rehearsal and we're rehearsing for two days. I got it. I got it. They had decided the way they were going to do it since they had just bought this. They had bought Miss Universe from Donald Trump. They had just bought it as so they had decided what they were gonna do was instead of doing that baffling thing at the end and first runner up is an announced his name in woman standing here. Who's got the clown as Senator so they said what we'll do is. We'll do the second runner up. You do have three girls out. Here would do second runner up in near would just have the first runner up in the winter standing there. But on your way down we want you to say, whoever does not win the first runner up will take over the duties of Miss Universe in there. Effect that she will not have the ability to do. So. So we practice it. I can't tell you how many times second runner up and the new miss two thousand fifteen universe is in the in the name. Well, the lady that used to run the old pageant she decides we're not doing that. So she puts a third name on the card. Don't tell nobody. No one knows this. But this woman, but here's the problem. The teleprompter don't know it. So I do the third runner up. I got two people standing here. I got miss Colombia and the Philippines. The camera. The teleprompter says, and I got a I got an earbud in. I got director talking to me the teleprompter says and the new two thousand fifteen Miss Universe is chess. Like we've been practicing. Well, little do I know on this card. This woman who put the winner in the corner month room is on the name of the winner. I never saw the third name because we never look for. So when it handed me to card, and I look at but two names on a card. So I said the first one so there I said in the new two thousand fifteen MS universe is he said hold whole miss Colombia miss Colombia. Great jobs, Steve Goto back and set up for the finale a coup. I walk into back. We backed at two minutes and thirty seconds did dude in my ear says you said the wrong name what I said to him is not for television podcast internet, nothing. I put together a combination of profanity that was one of the most beautiful combinations of vowels of fighter. This would be on the top plays on ESPN. I. Really had it in that into that. Pat, Pat, Pat that that that. That they're do. That's how it ended. He said. Okay. This is horrible. How did he say the one name and my God it works? With me said h how did they do that? Gimme the car. Look at the card man is down here. He said, and what you could see my hand over this thing. A cement them will go straighten it out the guy says to me would straighten it out tomorrow in the media. Mr. bright idea said, no we're going to straighten it out right now. I'm walking back down there. All I here's what are you doing? What are you doing? I'm going back out here to straighten it out. I went out there, man. And I took all the heat. I showed him the card. I even turned to cart around and showed it to my mistake. I was a kid. You not many you call me right out to that. This is how cool we are. He called me that morning. He said you. Okay. He said, I know how live television worked. He says somebody didn't protect you, my friend a side note, man. But I I didn't even it was so nasty, man. It it got ugly at the press conference. I was a reporter from Columbia this do right hill. Man. That's when the other side of me came out he kept going. How could you do such a thing? This never happened before. I said what just happened it might not have. But it just happened. I said, hey male. Just honest mistake. I said I didn't see the card. It was a mistake. And he kept hammering me. Mad stew from Columbia. Just kept hammering me. And I just couldn't take it. No more. And I said, oh, ooh. Day off you talking to me 'cause I'm through which you, you know, I'm trying to be nice. And that's when a guy. I from my Jew. Steve, Steve, Steve, let's just golden nano. I wanna know who you talk to because you're talking to me like you're going to do something. Really don't fight anymore. But you know, figured tonight. Be a good night start back. You know? Starbucks Mayes will be tonight. Got this tuxedo. I got you know, I'm pretty popular right now. So they got me out the room. And I didn't know how bad it was until the next morning. And man when I was walking to get in the car. I mean, we love you anyway. Steve hanging. It's okay. Oh my God. It's him there. He goes there must social media feed. See I don't I can't read Spanish, but I know Cussing when I see it because it was on all of them had to say at when I landed back in Atlanta, man. And I went home it was on everything. And you know, what hurt me, man. Oh, the part that hurt me was a friend of mine on CNN guy thought was my friend. He was on that Manchester. They. Send me I mean who does that? This is the most boneheaded thing you've ever seen. He he was let me and that that was the only one really hurt me, man. 'cause I had had the guy on my show. I talk with him, and he was just lay semi man house. Also, I wasn't allowed trouble that day. Well, that's why I called you the morning because I yeah. Because I know what happens. I know you had you had to have at least two different things being told you at one time because I know how that sets up, and I know until Robin at the at the second it happened. I said he's gotten to pieces of information at the same time of guarantee, you somebody is in his ear telling him what he said or somebody's prompter. And he's reading rather too. Because he doesn't know or give a shit who win. What he's he's just saying what time right? I was exactly right. 'cause I'm a really smart guy. I don't hold show perfectly. You think I wait to game winning shot to not is simple. All I got do is read read. Essay what he told me to say he told me, and when I said it great jobs, Steve Goto the Becker center. Nobody knew nothing two minutes and thirty eight seconds later. He says you said the wrong name. Blankety blank blank blank blank blank. Combination mother blankly pink play all all I heard. It was how he's oh. My god. That was I left him calling on the Lord. That's how good a Cussing output out when you when you getting cussed out, and you just go. Oh, my Lord. When you just meet him. And, but you you write that this was the first due to call me was you man to I do at and made me feel better. But that week was that week was dark darkness pretty dark from. Yeah. Well, you know, come on. I mean, we're not curing cancer. Here. We're giving somebody a trophy. You know, I tried to soften it at the press conference. I said, you know, I just said wrong name, do you know, people are steel Columbia? I can't even fly over Columbia number that my plane disconnect I can't drink Colombian coffee anymore. I think the to trying to get me. I had a guy came to my show Montauk show essay man, he said, I'm from Columbia. Yeah. We still don't like you down. There. You still got problems down there? I said, yeah. Probably do. He's a man you said the wrong name you gave away. I crown to Philippians pardon what you trip and fall from Columbia. I said the wrong way, we got the wrong Miss Universe. I said we in America. We got the room president. Who stuck you? He don't want to piss off the cartel at same time. And, but you know, man, you absolutely, right. 'cause like I was getting rocks in my home in Atlanta with notes on them thrown over my gate. And so to this day to this day. I have twenty four hour armed guards at my house in Atlanta to this day front and back. I mean, man, they were throwing rocks over my wall at my gate, and you know, I met a lot of really nice Colombian people since Dan, but this is some people from Nablus. Yeah. That that got out of control, but this to show pass. Right. I mean, I was hoping you. All right. I got a few things. I gotta ask you. We'll be done. What do you think about all this political correctness? You know, man, it's hard now because Steph on a comedian. It's it's preventing me from going back. I thought about going back into one most special. I actually have thought about going back because I have so much to say over the past six years on my talk show. I've I've got some stuff man, that's in hit a soul funny. But political richness political correctness is so rampant now that everybody's looking for a way to get their feelings hurt. And so anything you say it's offensive to someone and all we need is one person. Because now, I'm in a sponsor driven business, all my shows are sponsor driven. And so now if somebody calls in and gets to rallying cry. He hurt me and one sponsor pool. The whole empire can. Crumble off of a joke. And so it's it's ugly to the point where you you can't be funny anymore about who who can you be funny about you can't say nothing mad about nobody because they rally so quickly 'cause it in dangerous go get a bunch of signatures that ain't even real. And next thing, you know, you off to air, man. So because you get advertisers spooks, man. Well Brady this. So I got to do something different. I got back off you can only talk about yourself. And nobody is folk comedy specials that interesting. Yeah. You can't talk about yourself for an hour and a half on comedy special. You're not that funny. You gotta talk about something, you know. And so what can jokes be about? Now, it's gotten out of control. I did a joke about spanking my kids on my talk show. Oh my God. Oh my God. You spank your children? Yeah. Set it as a joke, but they're all grown. It was joke, and they all none of them are imprisoned and all of them are doing really well to mass weapons work. They worked for me. And no, man. So that's crazy. Oh, I have some alligator shoes. Get a call from Pedo. And this one really pissed me off. They said you wearing alligators shoes, you know. And I told him I said and alligators kill kids. So are keeled alligators. Never heard from him again never heard from. Because it was a great response. Yeah. Alligators killed kids. Just recently. Yeah. So you should be shoes. Yes. Well, that's a that's a point of view thought. It was good came, you know, wear for nothing like that. But alligator snake? Yeah. What entertainer comedian? Do you admire? The most living end date, Richard. Pry was to came for me at dude, man. He formulated comedy the way you see today in so many aspects the guys that's out there. Now, I mean, I was a love George Carlin man allowed way. Carleen did what he did George. Carlin was a huge influence as a kid, man. It was Jonathan winters red buttons red Skelton another. Well. Probably got to take joy. Bill Cosby was a big influence. Nobody. Liquor please alcohol alcohol. But in comedy is a huge influence, you know. In comedy huge influence today, though comedy is changed greatly in cook his big to me, but Kevin Hart is one guys. But Eddie Murphy changed the game for us. Richard Pryor was a game changer for us. And so we all benefited from that two kings of comedy was because overall it kings of comedy was because of prior and kings of comedy was probably the biggest comedy vent forty four thousand people had to Georgia Dome Georgia Dome. Forty four thousand people came in the queens performed first queens of comedy Monique, Adele, given some more in lower Hayes took intermission. And they bought the kings out I enter to Georgia Dome on a horse. Join carriage with all the queens dressed in white. And I was standing in the middle of the carriage coming from the back. That's how they bought me to the state. Age the greatest single moment of my life. Come into the stage on a horse in carriage with forty thousand people screaming that was the big I got to get taper that somebody got admire that had to be a kick. Oh. That was a great show of you ever thought about doing it man doing what comedy? Yeah. Well, you got great sense of humor. May you be saying some stuff man, you you you in that line of Jerry clower type guide, you you, you know, him. No, Jerry clower. You gotta give some tapes of Jay Clough. He's country guide. Never used any profanity Jerry clever. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I know you're you Dale moss sale. All man that that country Houma follow the name love that dude. House big fan. But I think man you got you have a skill set though. 'cause you got time in man U's born with timing. It's different. It's different. Like, I said I'd never follow. You. That's for damn sure. I didn't raise no fool. I don't recommend that. He no, I no I wouldn't recommend it now. But I think you could do it in the right Centene, man. You never know. I think Paul I think 'cause man you your says Hume, you quickest HALE, and you say some you say at some now that day what was. Oh, God, don't repeat it. Yeah. Probably best. Yeah. Yeah. You you've washed it through hill. Let's just let it go. You get some funny stuff. This real ruin your whole career. Dr Phil said what? Oh my God. I'm calling Proctor and gamble because some dishwashing people talking about did you say. Would be ringing. We don't want people bugging us when we're off our selves, right? Yeah. Yeah. That'd be good. That would not be good. Are there? Good people left in his business. I'm sitting across from the one. I know really. Well, I mean man look now man for real you'll friendship to me what you've done for me. What you've shared with me. I mean, I went through some dog times man it was. So they were killing me on the internet once about my private life, which so many lives and you bought me on the show in just set the record straight. I can't tell you. How far that went? You know, is is is guys out there. You know is not many, man. But you you wanted to great people mad at I've run across man. That's why stop anytime. You asked me do some I do some which man 'cause you've interesting thing about you, man. You don't want anything in return? You make that perfectly clear, you've always been my friend. You've wanted to make sure that I was okay. You know, even. Now with what's going on with me? You know, what I released this thing that NBC's gonna replace the Steve show with Kelly Clarkson, it, you know, I've been on after seven years, you know, I'm I don't I don't get bitter about stuff like that. I don't have been good NBC for seven years. NBC been good to me. You know, how I got friends over there? I don't really look at life like that. But the first person pick up the phone was you ain't nobody else. Call me in this business right here. You'd first person pick up the phone and say, hey, man, what you wanna do? 'cause you know. I mean, you know, you first person tell me it ain't over is just opportunities in. So, you know, we set out, and that's what I appreciate. So when you say that good people in this business, you I think that Ted Harbert man will always be special to me because even when he gave it at three hundred thousand dollar check. I was telling you about Omaha when my show I came was offered on TV. He was a chairman over at NBC, guess what? I said, I'll take it. He took it just like that. Oh, so you Ted hob. Tyler Perry's a great guy. Oprah's always been kind to me. That's it is four just named and me five and that lady over this. This she go do me a podcast. Yeah. That's right. What I called you when they made that announcement. I mean, there's just no way that you shouldn't be on the air. I mean, that's what I call him said. I mean, what do you want to do? Yeah. And then I gave you the plan said, here's what you wanna do. Here's a guy who says, hey, man, if this happens, this is what you should do not know man, you won't go have a drink. What she going do. Now. What was me? You don't need that. No. You know, man. You're not to give up guy. I'm not a give up guy. You don't call me. We'll give up information you call me with ideas and a real solid plan. And I went wow. And then we set up here. And you said, hey, man, you to play golf win out. We play golf. I said. Okay. Cool. I went to golf course. I never been to you name it. They have other things. Income to the golf course hill. It's seven people you go to golf course. And you see a lot of people with ties on their saying regular, you're gonna pro shop and people in pro shop got on a tie that. That's where where's your polo shirts? Or what is really cool. Hey, good time. Man. You know? I just appreciate that. Like, I said, you you call me. And you you got ideas, man. And no, I mean you recognize who I am man. You've always been a fan of that. And you know, and you right. And you know, and I'm really really comfortable right now. You know, I'm really in a cool place because you know, if you tell me, you're going to do something to me, it's okay. It's your progress. If you can do it, you know, I don't own any TV station. Do it you won't do. But you know, y'all says in everybody get do what they wanna do. Then, you know. So we've talked before about production ideas and stuff for your show. I've always said the same thing. Right. Tell people get the hell out of your way. Do you gonna people come tell you how to be Steve? This is crazy, isn't it? See we got some written out for you hear this. How you go. Be st. Yeah, kidding me. Throw the bullshit flag on and you say that. You say bullshit. I've been talking for our tight. How could have released a couple of these openings on me and just let some stuff go. But you know, man, you you you you're so right of sorta I'll tell you what was funny man to first time we had a cook and segment on his show in high like the food that didn't go well at NBC at all I 'cause you know, you watch the today show and good Morning America, everything they cook. They lives wonderful. Yeah. Delicious. Well, I'm not that guy. And so it was big when it really messed him up. You know, my mom been passed in south forty now loved a manage my favorite person in the world and every year for forty years. All I wanted for my birthday was German chocolate cake. So no matter where I was my momma made me a German cake and shipped it to me. I didn't care where I was. So my momma been dead about fifteen years, you know, stint. So this lady comes on the show who makes dietary dishes, and she makes the diet version of all dishes as so she comes on the show. And she says, you know, what I heard I heard your mom major a German chocolate cake every year. And I said, yeah, yeah. Yeah. She said, well, I got something for you. I got a piece of cake right here. That's gonna taste as good. If not better than the one your mama made. Right. We all to a bad. Stop this eight a good open for somebody, you know. Okay. Country boys, would they mama. You know, we kinda mama is country dues don't. That's mama. I'm I'll still call a, mama. I'm sixty one. That's mama. Now, you don't told me something that came possibly be true. But you didn't drug my mom in. I'm gonna make make piece of cake tastes, just as good. If not better than the one your mother made I'll looked at this lady. It is not going go. Good lady. But I'll tell you what I'm gonna give it a shot, and it better be everything. He said it was and it wouldn't. I've been indigo cake now win. Spirit in a tau the audience. The executive producer. She went. Oh my God. And the woman was started as she was with you spit it out. Let's say it wasn't nothing. Like, you said it was going be. And now, I wouldn't better on my momma main all I heard was cut. Cut. And then I heard. What do? With. Yali won't there's too much real it was that too much now to now it was a black coupling audience that day. The dude was on the floor. Oh, oh, yeah. Yeah. I mean, he grabbing his. This is the funniest thing. He's ever heard. And just when being black new was having a great moment. Everybody else was mortified, and they haul it could. But it came at talk me, I had exist from NBC the next day. Oh, yeah. So you can't do that. You can't tell the truth. You cannot do that tool. Guest. I had a little time. Think about us. First of all KOMO now the setup was all wrong. You can't tell me I'm country. Boy, did you in do some better in my mom, and and she's day come on. Now, you just but did is trifling at long talk me. And I I didn't I didn't really think I was going to be on daytime that long after that. Yeah. Because I couple real moments like that on TV. Yeah. I had the kind of conversations ABC early on when I was on Oprah and told a couple that they need to get a divorce before dark that night. Like. Yeah. That was exactly what they came onto here. But I mean, come on. I mean, just because you married somebody. That'd be the right one. Right. See and who phrases it like that tonight? Dog hair? The speed is. Oh, but tune in one day. I thought you sit trouble us looking do you told him you say look man, you need to man up. I went okay said that to ado does usually fighting words in hood. He he went from hood. He went there you need to man up, and I went cat up. That's not daytime ish. You can't tell it. Dude. You need demand up on daytime TV, that's too much honesty. So when you did that, and you stayed on air, I say, well, you not quite getting that number. So they keep him on. He got it three six. So he can probably tell him to man by probably got one more piece of cake spit out. I got my wife in the audience every day so told a guy that his last must have is nuts in a Dixie Cup. Because he he just wouldn't do what he needed to do. I looked out there at her. And I thought I did not have a problem with the network. I got a problem with my. Alive. That's a Dixie Cup. Okay. It's not that that work. Robert sitting up she go you said what? Well, I mean, she was emasculating him just to country way saying that right? Jim nuts. Niksic? See that's what I mean. You could you could in the right place. You could do standup, man. Well, if you did all you gotta do stories. You ain't got to do jokes stories casino. I'm a storyteller. I'm not a joke. Teller storyteller. Outta right jokes, man. I just explained to you in an exasperated form what's happening in new life the way, I see it. And I'm at my absolute funniest when I'm exasperated you come from that same place, if you it pissed me off once you start there you funniest hail. All you gotta do it starts with it. This you ever get pissed off watching this. If you do pissed off comedy brother, that's my life. Robinsons? I should do my last season on H B O or something where I can say what's into bubble over my head. Brought when I'm talking to some of these payments seriously. I mean, come on can be on the front row. Yes. A tube sock and airtime, you say, so much just pack it in my mouth tear. Oh, yeah. People think people think doing what we do is easy, right? Yeah. Just not that easy. No c c met. What makes you good is? When your guests sucks hard. You can hold the line. That's when it's hard. You got enough to cover. Yeah. When you gotta guess sitting there staring at you like a dead trout. Problem bright seriously. They're looking at you like a dead trout. You say something to dislike Brad do have talked to these people. Right. They've gotten a story out of them. So now you bring him on TV. So they can tell the story, right? They're leaving out major pieces of information. So I got a divorce. Not. No, no, no, no. No, wait. No, no. You kill two people. Which made the man not wanna sleep. But you know, that's how you got divorced. You can't lead at out. They get out there and freeze, and then it's like pulling teeth, right? Yeah. One long won't burn. You're sitting there like come on. I mean, give me something as like a little big shots. I used to tell these people all time. And I said you can't produce these four and six year old kids know going over everything these questions you're going to ask MS to arvy us. Okay. Let me play. When you net door and that little six year old who's been doing this in front of empty house. Steps out a hit music delights is Bali, and they see all in people all that stuff. You told them that they was going to say they not finished say, none at a saga seven key is some grandkids. They not going to do it. So they we would be over there and eight sit on the couch, and I could see them. I could see them about to leave. Agit decided and the cue car lady is shaking the card trying to give me read come talking about everything. But what's on the car because I got to get this little person to chill out shoes. From how much shoes costs? What made you put a Pete bow on yellow tryst gorgeous little girls going because I like pink who bought the shoes my mother, I gotta get them cold. The ladies over there shaking car. I will go Timah. Stop shaking these causing me you have to talk to these kids different. They've got to answer these questions. They don't even want to come out here. They opened the door one time. There's a little boy looked at the crown turn around and went outside and just do his mama's Koldo through. He he's not taping today. So we ended up taping a lot of kids 'cause some may man we do elaborate setups. We gotta tell set. Down. 'cause he's decided he's not doing it. And that's what happens when you, you know, producer produced these kids man in that when a dog gets out to tell us that it's a disaster. But you got to be a special talent to do that in his you, Ellen Oprah very few. You know, my show came on seven years ago that hasn't been a daytime show SIS. No, that's right, nothing. You start lapping yourself real fast. If you don't have a lot of depth and a lot of whip. Yeah. In what you're doing? You're the best storyteller. I think I've ever heard the best storyteller. My favorite story of your still is about the build and fund that is absolutely up. I grew up a Baptist church. So I know about to build and fund is the biggest con in the history of the world at you tell it better than anybody. I've ever seen. We did. We had a built in fun at my church for twenty years. We put a Donau omit church been dropped money in that boxes out bought. We don't have a dull now on this church. We didn't get a new stained glass window one time. We got oh much earch bought on new neon cross and hung it up over the Christ. Stan and the big service that day was at the quad soon. They was going plug it up. Well, they plugged it up, and they shot it out the whole church. They plug it up to cross came on for two seconds. Delights is out a c. A samarra. I'm so sick of being Paul. If I have got to get some money because you know, my father never had money. You know, the biggest vice my father told me says son best thing, you could do for pope people is not be one of them. 'cause you can't help. Nobody much. I was just sitting there going. Why do we keep doing this post of past anniversary? We put to chairs together and put a white sheet over it. Now, we you won't that's a love seat 'cause we don't hung on why she is two fold away today and passed in the first lady sit down on the white sheet, and I'll be going this really poor. This really poor. But people haven't been to those churches. I mean, these these churches agroup him were so poor. And we did have I don't know if it's because you didn't have the money for the rut choir what, but they did stand up interchange and start worshipping and singing and praying out loud. And it's always somebody that is really old. They really get confused. What did you? What's the lady in your story? Sisto day sister Odell. Oh my God. Do we all have a sister Odell? I love your sister Odell though because oh people they that's the portion of the service called devotion. Right. What you get to stand up you can testify or you can saying song you wanna saying song where people join in saying along, which you, but oh people write songs on the way in. And then you had to try to catch them. I know that Jesus is. Yes. He is. Okay. Rhythm rhythm beat chorus. You do align. We do a line. You say it, we repeat it nothing. Come out everybody everybody. What we don't know the one you wrote on the way that you wrote this on the way Jesus is a he'll widow with a bicycle. Jesus heals would a bass. I had a lady stood of church one tab feel and she said she stood up in church. Nee says sister porta and she said I wanna thank the Lord today. I was driving in my car and truck pass me on the left and another truck passed me on the right? Thank you Jesus. Muhdad leaned over say this bitch, ain't got no business. He'll church. I see you. She said a truck passed the writer known pass me on the left. Thank you Jesus. He said this bitching got no traffic that right there. I got I got a whipping got. Because my mother was in choir. Stan, and I was under the pew laughing out thought, my dad was funny person who will man. Well, you know, what is all good? Right. I mean, it's all experience and you've used every bit of it in your life. It's paid off for you. Right. You just remember your roots? You bring them with you, you tell you stories and people pay you for it is crazy. Isn't that? Crazy. I mean. I was talking to Michael earlier about you say you've never missed a show in like sixteen years. And I'm like really we get paid for coming out and talking to people for an hour. What what are you going to miss out, plowing fields and stuff working real jobs? Right. I'm gonna call in sick. Who am I going to call me? Yeah. That's crazy, man. And people don't understand that. You've never missed two hundred episodes. Now family few nine years. I've never missed a show seven years of the Steve Harvey show. Never missed a show seven seasons of the Steve Harvey sitcom never missed a show had to council one show 'cause my mom and dad, but I came back and made it up in thirty three years of standup. I missed my call time twice macabre down in Knoxville, Tennessee, I was trying to get to Ashfield Tennessee for seventy five dollars. I couldn't make it. I got fifteen minutes late. They had called in another comedian. He took my job. I had three shows to do in Birmingham on Friday night. Whether came in Dallas, I couldn't get out. I drove to a private Astro for the first time ever and chartered a private jet. That was going cost me thirteen thousand one way of very small Lear. But I paid it. I got there due to weather and everything they had taken around. I landed on the half late mister show two shows in thirty three years. I've never missed anything. But you country. See you'll work ethic. You ain't gone. These people. This is doing a talk show is so hard. You know, I was talking to train it of the day. And he was wearing me out and I set out in the backyard. And I said man, this is hard, man. This is hard. He's twenty seven years old. He used to play for the New England Patriots. He said, No, MR Harvey turning yourself from oppo Kia into all it is. This is hard this little workout you can do this. He said how you turned yourself from poke it into all it is I'm training in your backyard. You have all the stuff to train in you'll yard. He said, no, that's hard. You know, what I got up and finished at set without complaining 'cause he was right? There's no two ways about it. We are blessed. We are blessed. Thank you for coming. And talking to me today, man. This wasn't even just me. And you we could've just put a microphone into golf cart Sunday we'd have been defined that is when I come over next on just head. It's like a scene on a back porch would. Oh, washing machine. Ain't nobody used in a long time in a rusty air pike without no pedals on. That's what it felt like me. I committee where for you, man. I wouldn't care what you asked me to do. You've never said. No. And I don't think I've ever said no record going. Thank you. All right. Fill in the blanks and your podcast app. And subscribe. I'm Scott Scott Johnson Skull and I'm Roger Chambers Show's producer that you're going to go for a new nickname skull. Johnson's ooh Johnson Pinch of me between your cheek and gum. Patriot dot com slash. DT Ns. Let's start with a few tech things you should know. FACEBOOK's experimental APP employs choice called the N. p. e. team released Wail Annapolis. You decorate photos with text and stickers a main creator if you will. That's the idea anyway. It's free to use but no in-app purchases or subscriptions. The APP is only available in Canada for now though the MP team is charged by facebook with rapidly developing APPS APPS to experiment with new ideas speaking facebook. FACEBOOK also announced F. Developer Conference will take place may fifth and Sixth Than Twenty Twenty at the Henry Convention Center in San Jose California. You can sign up to get notified when registration will open at F F eight DOT COM. If you hit the AF eight key on your keyboard at this won't automatically go there. I try to Alibaba has a likely price of one hundred. Seventy six Hong Kong dollars I secondary stock listing member on the New York Stock Exchange. But they're also going to be now on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. That's the price for institutional investors but a CNBC source says that's likely likely to be around the same level for retail investors as well athlons to line up a battery cases for the iphone eleven eleven pro and eleven pro Max in the the same black white and pink colors as their predecessors and also with wireless charging support. What's new though is physical button? That oughta opens the IPHONE CAMERA APP up even if the phone is locked all right. Let's talk a little bit more about what went wrong with Disney plus last weekend Scott well the verge reports that the head of Disney's direct to consumer division. Kevin Mayor says difficulties with Disney plus APP at launch had to do with the way the company architect the APP a lot of us would say developed or made whatever. It's a fun word anyway. Mayor said that the Bam Tech Aka Disney streaming services had never seen the high volume of streams when you're You know when when hosting things like HBO and MLB exposed the quote limits to the architecture. Mayor says Disney recode the APP within the next couple of weeks and fix the issues affecting that kind of stuff. So you won't have a problem in the future like a I got kicked out of my movie Or I had to leave and I came back and I started and it made me start over that sorta stuff. They pointed out. They're going to try to fix as well. I think I think architecture the APP is actually. I think he's trying to say it's not just the way. Hey we developed it. It's that we structured it to follow a certain path when it does things and we didn't understand just how big the demand and would be for this. I mean to say this is the biggest demand that Bam tech has ever seen is saying something Bam tech has handled the largest streaming events in in some of the largest streaming events Launches any anyway that have ever existed. HBO Now with the Game of thrones coming back doc was huge for Bam tech and they weathered it fairly well even though he had some problems back then so this was just Gargantuan. This is unprecedented precedent. And and when that happens it starts to expose things where when you were developing the APP you architect it in a way say well then it's going to go over here and make that call and you know that can handle ten million at once so that Oughta be fine and then suddenly you get one hundred million and you're like oh I should be changing this so that it's not all hundred million going at once and swamping the server I should it'd be logging. Continue watching in place in memory. That doesn't get flushed out and then people don't continue watching. I'm making this up but those are the kinds of things that can happen and ned explains to me. Why you had these weird issues that weren't related to streaming? It's not like they didn't have enough bandwidth that's not like they didn't have enough servers. It wasn't simple like that. It was the actual architects techs with the APP. That makes a lot more sense to me. It's all so you can imagine like to from conference rooms right where the guys are like. This is the worst and the producer producer. People are like we have lots of demands. You know it's kind of it's kind of like A. It's a good situation to be an UH depending on who he asked. Yeah that's true but also I would argue. It's easy to look at him be critical that I would actually argue given the demand given the fact that this wasn't a measured roll out the way. Hbo Now was where it was only available Apple Apple TV at first and then they went other platforms and kind of took it in a different way having this all land on the same day on every platform on all these different APPs on a pretty very you know group of of of ecosystems and have it go as well as it did. I think is kind of impressive oppressive. So I'm sure there's room for concern and I'm sure that it's great for them to look back and say well here's what we could have done different and even sure. It's okay for them to do that. In light of shareholder concerns turns about how well it went and how retention is going to go as a result but it worked pretty good like I was having problems the first day a little but I kinda did get in that day and then from on the day after that I had no problems and I haven't really had any problems since I think they did pretty good all things considered I've seen a lot worse launches of a lot worse services so it's not so bad. Google assistant has a new feature called your news. Update that can be played by telling the assistant to listen to the news. Google assembles the update from various Google. Partner is based on what it knows about you including your location. Among other parameters among several dozen participating partners are Fox News the NBA Aljazeera Asira wired and more stories in your updates can come from multiple sources with the source. Read out before the news item plays you know what you're listening to and you know where it came from. UPDATES UPDATES generally start with big national international stories followed by local news and then more personalized bits like sports. For example you can go into assistant settings inst- to prioritize or mute various sources. Yeah one of the things I found out when I went to set it up as if you already have news setup and Google Assistant. It's it's not going to give you this new algorithm ikley generated one. It's just going to give you whatever you set up before so I got the BBC. When I tried this and I'm like wait that's not right and I went and I had to go into the settings for Google assistant which depending on how you're doing it I was doing it on my pixel four can can be a little little tricky to find but once you find it then you say oh? Give me the your news update and I did that and once I got it going. It's it said. Okay pick a few sources but even if you pick sources it's not going to limit to those sources it's going to try to bust you out of your bubble and show you things that maybe you wouldn't have chosen. That thinks you'll like anyway based on what Google knows about the more. Google knows about you. The more accurate it's going to be mine was interesting. I didn't like the sources available honestly. BBC is my Go-to and it wasn't on there. Her and also the first time I tried it. It played the same story from CBS News. Back to back like it started at gave me two worlds stories stories. We'll actually to national stories. US National Stories and and they were the same they were the exact same recording. So might be. If you work out I don't know wasn't bad though. It was actually the Santa Rosa power outages were on there and and the thing about a an event up in Santa Clarita which is just north of although at Santa Rosa isn't really local to you but I suppose you know thinking like state full. Yeah you know this this whole idea is and like like you mentioned. It's not gonNa work that well the same way that if I use a streaming music service I kinda hit like Selected for are you radio. It's like you know. Sometimes they get it right sometimes. They don't get right but it's interesting especially you know spotify as news yesterday about trying to you know handpick a Eh cherry-pick PODCAST playlist for people. This is an extension of the same thing it's like you know. Should machine learning. Try to figure out what what it knows about me enough that it could deliver the news that I want well. I don't know that has yet to be determined but I like the idea idea theory. Yeah but I like is eventually we get to a place where deeper data can be found if Google is good at anything. It's integrating search to everyone. Everyone of their products in a way that's useful and what I would love to be able to do is say it's clear. Scott Really Likes Tech News so I'm going to pull the morning headlines from the daily news show feed or whatever. I'm GonNa play something from somewhere. That isn't just a mainstream partner like these guys. That's when I know they've really made it with does dig a little deeper go a little further I mean that has other implications like extreme sources of news. And whether you want any of that in your feet or not so part of me likes the idea of creating partners but I I feel like there's a good step in the right direction and I actually looked forward to using it even though I mostly use Google assistant on my Ios uh-huh estimate the robot lawyer behind the do not pay parking ticket dispute service member of groove that for years it it'll automatically file. Things is to kind of help. Resolve your parking ticket for on. Your behalf has a new service called. Do not sign that is included in the do not pay three dollars subscription. Do Not Assign will let you upload scan or link to a license agreement like a terms of service type thing. The service then uses machine learning to highlight clauses. At thinks you might WanNa know about out and any methods for opting out of data collection. It'll even send letters on your behalf to opt out just like it does with the parking tickets stuff Do not sign is available in in the United States on the web and in its I o s APP Man Yeah I mean just the fact that something like this exists just goes to show you how bamboozled you can get by by license agreements. Otherwise at I you know I I haven't had a opportunity opportunity to use this but I can think of lots of a scenarios where if for some reason it could help me figure figure out like hey is this. Is this legal. What do I gotTa do here? You know show I signed should not I do it two years ago. There was somebody in. I don't know where the link is is anymore if he even exists anymore but there was an. I brought this up a Thomas Morning that there was a lawyer who has just and this was human control obviously not machine learning but it was somebody who was taking common euless from various common services and I felt like there was kind of a gaming bent to if my memory services like Sony's Ula or Microsoft's Microsoft's xbox or something but anyway it would take these and boil them down to one or two small paragraphs of the gist of it. Like the gist of what you're giving up. What what you're signing off? What they can take away from you what they can cancel you for these sorts of things and I really liked that? Because I'm not GonNa read the nine page Scroll that that POPs up when I install a new version of the work after whatever. I'm not going to see what terms changed for blizzard. There's GonNa hit okay and assume that I'm going to be okay and I really liked Zack. Is Somehow it just made me feel like somebody out. There was watching out for other people. Maybe the robots can do it they can look out for their their humans owners and make us all do. I don't know I I will probably use this. I guess is what I'm circling around here too. It makes sense to me to to try to simplify that process. If we're not going to legally make these guys make that stuff more common language and easy to understand the nano will work. We'll do a work around. And here's here's a workaround. Yeah I like this because it reminds me of you'll alizer. That's another service. That was attempting to do this. But it didn't really have the machine learning. It was doing some other tricks to to try to analyze license agreements in highlight things. And it's not just about privacy I mean some of the stuff is compliant with the GDP are and still in the terms of service. So you have to you know you still have to look at it even though it's more it's more has to be more plain language with the GDP has to be more upfront. This still might be helpful for stuff but it's also also they have one example in this article about a gym that basically put in its terms of service that you couldn't cancel unless you moved away like you. You were stuck back in the gym forever. which can't be legal but again like are you gonNA take them to court or you're going to find some other way around it and this was the do not sign was able to find the loophole hole? That said tell them you moved and then they have to cancel your service. Oh Man I didn't know about that one. If that was if that's the thing that happens what needs to happen then there is just a good round public shaming for that gym. So that they take it out of there and never do that again. Because that's terrible to do that. Your users my gosh and this is the other advantage of this kind of services it will bring more of those sorts of abuses to light point. Well something that I think is. Actually they'd very positive is google adding new tool to google earth that led to set landmarks. Draw lines from one place to another add text at images his even at videos to every point along any particular journey and then share it with your loved ones are whoever you want to go was also experimenting with pre made worse. It's calling the stories which is a term that I don't know it references. Lots of things but if it sounds familiar to you google earth already had guided tours in its wager TAB. The new tools now allow anyone to make an share a tour and then invite others to collaborate on their tour at Web. Only for now. So it's not a mobile. Oh but Google says you can view tours on the latest versions of IOS and Android. So it's a it's getting there. Google Earth already had something similar to this but they were all like professionally done by documentary and stuff so this is a chance for you to just be like. Hey I had a great trip to Minneapolis and here the cool things things I did there and then share it with your friends. I was joking that it could also be used for bragging. If you go on some amazing Caribbean vacation or something like that but sure I mean I mean but like Brag but I still want to like follow along on what you did. Was it that gray. Let's see where did you go. You do if you're going to the same place as someone else went this. This is a great way to pick up some tips. Yeah this'll this'll solve the problem. I have very specific problem. which as we get every year people on my morning show? Ask us about the best places ago. When you're in Vegas because we go to Vegas you have a big meet up? There were there a few times a year and it makes sense that we might have some suggestions. So here's a great way to say instead of having to explain it in fifty emails or build an email template about it. I can just Lincoln to this to this map and say here's all the places that we recommend going. You've got pitchers you've got everything along the way like I think it's a kind of a brilliant thing and a little surprised they didn't make this available more. I don't know sooner to the more broad public. The ERA AIRBNB and Google Street view and being able to sort of virtually be in a place that you've never been before or maybe you've been before but when you're figuring out how are you going to do it better the next time kind of thing. When when it's your friend you know Tom Leeann go Japan they come back and they say that we had the best two weeks of our lives? Here's everywhere we went you got to do with us like that is so motivating for me. It's all you have to do it all while you're there you can do this later right as I understand it like this isn't a system where you're like. Okay hold on a second before we get off the bus or get a hurry up and do the post about what trade took like. It's not like that you can go later and say alright. What pitchers do we take? ooh This'll be good to have up here. And we went to Fuji and Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah. But that's a that that I mean honestly I would love to follow one of Tom's trip to Japan or a what everyone will document our trip to Japan to be included in your Japan. Better better get it into Google Earth Asia. Get in there. Hey I want to say this first. Big thanks to SBA Sheridan for submitting this on the subway. Bill Gates back to energy company. Healy Healy agenda. If you haven't heard of it because neither did I.. Nobody else did kind of little secretly thing but it's finally making some noise anyway. They have used computer vision software and automatic edge detection to direct a field of mirrors to use sunlight to create temperatures above one thousand degrees Celsius. That is very very warm About a quarter of the temperature aperture of the surface of the sun. That's just how warm the solar heat could be used to make a cement steel glass other materials no carbon emissions. The next step is to demonstrate the process at scale a little tricky. We'll see anyway later on helium. Jim believes it may be able to create hydrogen at scale as well kind of a big deal one of the things. Yeah I noticed in this article is is. He'll jen people are at least saying that. They can demonstrate at scale. This is not like now we have to solve how to do it at scale which is often the case was scientific studies like well. We did it in the lab now at figure out how to do practically they are like this is practical. We just now have to we. Did we did a one off to prove that and now we know how to scale it. We'll do that next. It'll be interesting to see if they follow up on what they say they can do but if they can This would take out a huge carbon emitter If it's a adopted by Industry and save a lot of power to boot yeah there was a You know that I don't remember the name of it to Bill Gates. It has a documentary series about Bill Gates on Netflix Netflix. Original they follow him around and a big part of it is like. Here's one of the innovations were working on and then they'll kind kind of show the work in progress and show the people involved in it. It's very good. I liked it a lot and they also in a dispersant with questions like why were you so hated in the nineties or were did you and Steve Jobs really hate each other. Plenty of that drama. But really it's about these things. He's investing money in and one of them was this self Not Perpetual Machine. Basically was an energy source for a small village that could run perpetually and not have any carbon emissions never we need new fuel like that was the goal was to create something that just kind of kept on pump and a half to think because I never mentioned this thing. I have to think that this is somehow connected to that or it's it's not the very least it's connected his. This isn't creating energy this creating heat sure but if you're creating hydrogen at scale which they say they're saying they. I think they could adapt us to do that at some point but they haven't got to that yet right. I was just saying that. So if they if that's what they're saying if they do and if they can then that means a whole lot of demonstratable table capability here not just. Hey we can heats up real good so I'd have no. I disagree with you this this this particular technology is we can heat steph stuff up real good and that at this level of heat is incredibly useful without even getting into electrical generation. You don't think ask any any potential for no of course I'm not GonNa say that because we we use heat to burn coal and push generators so yeah maybe this could You know push a generator to create electricity to. But I don't. I don't know that that's the biggest advantage of this ways to do that. I do understand it because the French developed one. That looks very similar in their setup to heat a water tower generates steam for power generation. But it isn't on the same isn't just nine dollars for that melt. The tower steam wouldn't be steam very long you. If you're Steve Tower like you'd have the the tower would turn to steam but there's a lot of wiggle room between zero in a thousand degrees Celsius where they could find no. You're absolutely right about that. You know there. There's all kinds of of derivative technologies might come out of this as well but I think those are actually fairly commonly. Rogers says there's other projects the real big advancement here is is to be able to create. Create this kind of heat at a sustainable useful level. People have tried to do it before and they just couldn't quite get it to this level at a hearing Tuesday the US National Transportation Safety Board determined cause and responsibility for the death of a pedestrian. who was hit by an Uber? Autonomous Car safety driver Raphael Rafael Vasquez was found partially at fault for being distracted by her phone. Uber's Advanced Technologies Group was also partially found to be at blame mm-hmm for inadequate safety procedures and ineffective monitoring of vehicle operators who did not have a system to keep safety drivers from becoming complacent all three of those things The NTSB said Male Uber. You're partially to blame for this death. As well and the Victim Herself Lane Hertzberg was found partially at fault for having methamphetamines in her system which may have impaired judgment when crossing outside the crosswalk and the state of Arizona was found partially to blame for is insufficient. Policies is to regulate autonomous vehicles and encourage Uber to put in place the proper safety procedures and to make sure that that there were regulations to ensure safety. This is obviously not a fun topic but I think what I find most interesting about. This decision is points the light on the fact that we all want to just say well it was. It was the pedestrians fault. She shouldn't have crossed outside the Cross. Well it was the driver's fault she shouldn't have been none or phone. Now it's Zuber's vault there near responsible company. It's the state's fault they should have regulated things better in the fact is yes yes to all four of those. Everyone had something they could have done done. Better to prevent this and man. Can you imagine if we spent that amount of time and care in determining the blame in a regular auto accident here car of of of a of these of these readings the one that sticks out to me. The most is Uber. Not Having a system to keep safety rivers from being complacent would that system be so something to train them first of all in the importance of of paying attention. That's like so like if you're going to get behind the wheel you cannot you. Look if there's what I'd say is you could have no things to the people from being complacent or you could have several to try to encourage it and if you do less likely that something like this happens you could have alarms go off. You could have like what Tesla SLA has. Where if you don't have your hand on the wheel it says hey you know what you need to get back to doing this? Yeah I I had the same question. Pop My head Sara. Like what what else could they do. And they're probably a number of things and who knows what they already did. There's probably a list of things that they do. Do to try to keep those people attentive or whatever well well no according to the NTSB they did not have a system to keep safety. Drivers are becoming like such a larger conversation. Right it's like if if you are driving a vehicle you are the driver of a vehicle. I mean you are you gotta be on point one hundred percent of the time right because you're not you're not sitting back can and being complacent ever but if you were a safety driver in Antonio's vehicle that supposed to be working as advertised you're kind of a chilling. Exactly what you're doing that's exactly what the NTSB said is first of all. This isn't a tested and approved vehicle. This is Zeh test vehicle and as such you need to make sure that your drivers are complacent on top of that. I think you're right there that this is going to be an issue for autonomous cars for the foreseeable future until they get to the point where they can be fully autonomous that were going to come up with ways to make sure that people keep paying attention so that they can take over if there. There is a fault you some of that computer technology. They're using to make these cars drive themselves. Use some of it to notice that you're on your phone and your all right. No and that's why Mentally Tesla Tesla already does this with their autopilot system. It tries to to bug you to make you pay attention now arguably maybe it doesn't do that good of a job. I don't know I mean that's a separate conversation but what was the. NTSB was saying here is look. This was a complex issue and there were a lot of factors. Not any one of them was the reason. But if you've done these things it's less likely that would happen. And having any kind of way to keep the driver from not paying any attention would have possibly saved a life. We got a couple of good ones. I one from Ellison Listen Sheridan friend of the show Alison said two thoughts on self driving cars. Speaking of self driving cars Learning about the selfishness selfishness level of of drivers which is cool. It's also says Steve and I are constantly noting that the Tesla's CEO somebody turn in front of us and can't tell that the car is moving at a rate and with with enough momentum to make it across well before we get there until it freaks out and slams on the brakes or sets off an alarm timely title email which is yeah. I mean based on our conversation. It's sort of like that. Sounds like what it should do. Even though it's been a little bit dramatic way like it's over err on the side of like saved people at all I mean I'm sure there's there's a point at which over correcting this would make it riskier because then you're more likely to have someone rear end you because it's doing this and it's an unexpected bay but that's our that was our whole conversation yesterday is if the car can start to tell the intention and be like Oh that that car is turning. I don't need to slam on the brakes because it's got plenty of room then that that makes all of this better for everybody. We got a lot of emails from folks worried about Rob Danilo after after we talked about sleep tracking yesterday and some of them are saying. Oh I think you have this this medical problem or that medical problem. And you didn't talk about seeing a doctor are you just trying to self diagnose so so so rob was nice enough to write us a little email today saying dear details thanks to all of you who wrote in expressing concern for my health and wellbeing with regards in my sleep patterns and sleeping disorders general. Please rest assured that I take my health very seriously especially as I unwillingly age. I'm kicking and screaming into the future and I know that home remedies are not an adequate replacement for calling in the professionals the tools that I described on. DT and Esser meant to be used as guidance and confirmation of the impact impact of small changes in one's daily habits but are never intended as a replacement for help from physicians. I'm already working with doctors and sleep. Disorder experts potential causes for my issues. So I am getting professional assistance. However being technologists I cannot help but do my own data collection and analysis of my sleep issues as well as data data collection of the rest of my health and habits and I don't anticipate that stopping anytime soon by monitoring my sleep patterns with low cost low invasive technologies? I've been able to make changes in my daily and nightly routines things that have impacted my sleep positively. So that will continue and I'm happy to continue to report on new technologies and techniques. Going forward. Thank you again for. All of your concerns earns feel free to reach out to me on twitter. I'm there as Uber. Rob If you'd like to start a discussion or see what sleep tech tinkering with now. Peace Rob I want to add to that that one of the reasons. I didn't bring up the like well. It sounds like you have this disorder is. I'm not a doctor. I shouldn't try to diagnose rob anymore than Raja. Dry Diagnose himself and second of all his medical problems none of my business. The point of our conversation was I was like. Oh what's the sleep tracking tech. You're working with. So what do we have at our disposal not being doctors or sleep specialists we can. You have set of challenges in front of you. You going to be open to criticism you going to be open to ridicule you going to be talked about when you don't know the people were talking about you. Now, Here's the upside to being the player on the field best facing all the challenges to criticisms, the laughing the joke to being talked about. He has something going for him. This person boy woman child girl. Man. Has An opportunity to win? They have an opportunity to win. And in the game of life. Just. 'cause you lose, wanted a games or you lose wanted to matches. It. Don't mean you've lost you. Don't get put out you keep playing. And when you play. His the upside you have the opportunity to win, and but guess what you're GonNa win some matches you win some of the points you make. Some dunk hit some mobile. You hit some out the park. You gotTA. Score some goals you will. If you play the game. Here's the problem. With the people who don't faced criticism, who nobody booze cheers for. Who Sits in the stands. And knows neither victory nor defeat. Those people without realizing it. Are Facing a set of challenges also. And the challenges, they face in his. HOMILY OF WITH MYSELF! What I'm GONNA do now. What Direction am I going in? Where am I going to live? Wonder what job hire me. One if I can get paid for criticize. Oh woe is me. I can't find the purpose in my life. A man. I'm just waking up in a state of confusion. I don't know what to do. Now let me ask you something which wanted him, said a challenge you better be faced with. Because if I'm on the flow play if I'm on the field playing if I'm out on the court plan. Then guess what I got a chance at winning. But. Guess what I'm doing every day while I'm playing I'm strategizing. I'm waking up with the purpose. I'm waking up trying to come up with another angle. I'm in pursuit of a goal every single day. Versus. The people in the stands. Who Know Neither Victory? Nor defeat. Getting a game. Face the challenges. Better yourself better, your wife, Betty children better. You'll condition better, your employment status better, your job better, your career. Take Shot. Come on, man what you wait. No, because the alternative is to watch, other people play the game. You know what I just do. Sometimes sometimes, I, just I get Forbes magazine money. Magazine, sometimes I still grab a copy of ROB report. I just flip through it just to see. Get used to get these this book call unique homes unique homes is a magazine that just has a lot of extravagant houses. That's on sale across the country across the world. He's just flip through man. Let me. Just see man. What do people has playing game out there doing? Stop watching other people become successful when you could very easily be you if you make the decision, but when you make the decision to become successful, get ready for series of challenges. I think is more difficult not to accept the challenge. I think it's for me. This is just for me may not be the case for you for me I think as far more difficult to wake up and just see how life Congo today 'cause man. It could just deal you any kind of hand today. You understand. I don't like. You know spades. Let's Talk Card game for. Game spades really matter a whole lot you can do of. You won't get no spades. Really Salah a couple of little strategies. You got do, but you have all this. King Queen Diamond. All you want, but man. You Ain't got no space. They cut him you in trouble. Be whis different game you can create. What's in your hand? You got dealt a hand to, but you can create a hand. You can call trump. You can make diamonds, Yo spades. You can make hard to club. He'll spades. That's what I'm saying is what you do. Some witty is a different game and you can strategize I'm rather have a say so in my life than the wake up every day. Just see has gone I. Think is more difficult to. To not accept the challenge to be something than it is to accept the challenge to be something I. Think is more difficult to sit around and not be nothing I think it's harder to watch everybody life going somewhere, but mine. I think would be very difficult for me to sit here and hear them talking about other people and never mentioned my name. I will be difficult for me to say everybody rising getting. Except me I, that would be difficult for me I. It may not be for you for meal. Be Quite challenging. I would rather accept the challenge of making something out of my life than the sit there and criticized, Dole's and then watch and see how my life just may go. It is you know all the light for me and all of this? Is what I'm seeing more than black people outraged I like that that's the light in all of this for me. And that. That's the only way that I know that. This thing can give fixed because they have to have peer pressure when they go home at night. It came from black people that has to be from their neighbors. Classmates and so. I'm excited about the light that I see. I want our young people out there who are protesting to be careful. stay within the bounds of the law. You GonNa have to obey these curfews. They reeled. You can get arrested for disobeying these curfews. If you if you damage property. That's crime. I'm just letting you know. And so you've got gotTA keep this protest. It worked just fine ways working man. It will work just fine with protest because we have enough people trying to join in with this, so be careful out there folks. If you're going to protest, do it lawfully. Do not break the law. Obey the curfews. Be Peaceful. Get your hands up. Don't throw anything. Don't don't give them a reason. To arrest and attack you and don't give them. To change the narrative. And to throw you in jail I gotta ask you this. Is there something different? Do you think or feel about this particular protest. What's happening in the country now? You know when you compare it to other of course the. Biggest difference I see. Is that a lot of non blacks who have joined in? That's how you get this thing to move in the right way. Now What I'm hoping. This does is. As frustrating as voting has seen, two young people is not making a change. This is the beginning of change because your vote combined with a lot of other votes can make a it's GonNa make a huge huge difference here and I think this anger. Not Young people are feeling and rightfully so and I'm in one hundred percent of protests, but peaceful protests. I think it's going to push people to the polls. That would not normally go. And you can change. What's happening caused a direction of discount that's coming from the White House is Non Directional? Or backwards and you can shave that by vote. All right. Steve Coming up thirty two minutes after the hour. It's been a difficult very difficult an angry weekend. It's been all across America. We're GONNA. Talk about that right after this. We all saw it on video. The murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis police officer while Floyd was being detained, some of the protests were peaceful and some other agendas. Turn the marching into violence clashes with police as they use rubber, bullets and tear-gas. We saw arson. We saw fires vehicles, getting destroyed protesters and police getting injured. It was I mean we saw a little bit of everything No, I'm TV this weekend. was difficult sitting on a couch with your eight year old son trying to explain this. To make it. Is so difficult to try to explain what this is all about. And his big question is why. Why why are you doing this well Tommy? My son Winton who lives in downtown Atlanta area. All was out there last night. Amongst protesters cause he's a photography student. And he wanted to capture. It on photography, and he ended up shooting a video that I posted. On My instagram, which I was very proud of his work as a as a student, trying to capture the moment, he caught this. Woman talking and Winton caught her talking and recorded it and put her. And used her in the. Making of this video. Of the protest last night. And I put on my g page and it's really is really really. A piece of work that I was proud of by him, and then of course I'm his father, so we had had a long talk about okay, you didn't done that. That's enough. And he said Dad, but I had to do my part and I can't. What can I tell him? I mean you gotTa. Let him you know. Speak out he seeing stuff. At twenty two right I've seen a lot more of it than he has. And he sick and he wanted to show how sick and it was by doing a video and put it on his edgy patient. I'll put it on mind so if you WANNA see what winning captured on video before the curfew. And he did it before the curfew curfew. He not to tonight. OFF God just asked him not to go. You know his father. I don't want you to. Roy Don't let them arrest you for disobeying curfew. This one is on video and now the screaming. There was no screaming for Trayvon. That was no white outrage for Trayvon was no video. They've seen what we've seen, but when he goes to court is like they don't see it. You See, but here's his. Here's a his part when they say they're waiting on the grand jury to decide if they're going to be able to press charges or not. What I had learned Harwood was a grand jury is just twelve registered voters? They're not a group of specialized elected officials. Twelve of supposedly our peers who are never appears so the justice system is jess people. We were talking about just you know everything that's going on the protests going on in Washington and not a word, not a peak. Maybe a couple of racist tweets from the president, but nothing of any. Substance I mean look. This is not what he does this. This is called leadership. He's never let people. Before, he's never been responsible for any lives outside of his family. I just don't believe that, so you are asking him to lead a nation and offer words of comfort when he's never comforting anyone. That's not his Mo. his business model when he gets in financial trouble, he find. He files bankruptcy, so he can keep going without pay. That's what it is. Look for tax loopholes all of that, but I mean. He can't call for calm anything. Him To do? Right, but this is a president is supposed to be talking, right? Yes, yes. Your country on your your contrary is full of derived. Unemployment, and we are. We have protesters, and we are writing over racism, and you are silent silent because they're trying to write something for him. In a room, what can we get him to say? And he's got to agree to it because they know when they put him out there, man he going read to a certain point in any goal, Flou- and trying to coach him right now on how to be a leader, but it's a sad state that we're in where we have to coach the leader of the biggest richest nation in the world. And he's in a corner somewhere. Not knowing what to say, because he has no experience at calming people down. Look, the man. Don't go to church. You wanted the job yeah. He goes send in the National Guard like he's saving America. That's all he's waiting on. He's not offering one. House of corrective measures to calm this down. Less. Get the DOJ see if he has somebody other than bar. He could send the DOJ down the Department of Justice. Get these officers arrested. Get all these cases. Put forward. Get some convictions rolling. Get some jail time going and communist thing down plas pass some legislative lock. He got that he can do what he wanted to what he said he's doing that. He said that he has attorney. General Bar attorney general barred looking into that. That's what he said. Well, how can you? He doesn't tell the truth. I'm just telling you what he said. We only going on what a president says and what he or what he does right 'cause I'm not doing any. Yeah him what he does, he doesn't do anything for these. He says a lot. Usually that's not true. Chamberlain nothing comes out of his more nothing. None so! And? That's a shame. Yeah. People. Say He ally. When you don't have to just. When the truth will do like. All the time, yeah! The truth ain't any. Truth will set you free about that one. So just a note, federal leadership and you know he's just so busy attacking the Democratic leaders from the state of Minnesota and the mayor of. Yeah instead of you saying. Positive messages. All you do is attack each right because you know what Karl. He's trying to put blame anywhere but him the mayor. The mayor. Jack immediately had to police officers fired from police department. Mayor Used to be a civil rights attorney. J. You know trump I mean crummy, crump. Explain all of that guy's good. Yeah, he's he's good. The government the police department has hired agitators. This is proven. Agitators to blend in with them. and. Incite the riot even more so that they can turn around and flipped narrative, and they've done it for years and look I. It's just all types of organizations who could do that I'm not putting it all on the police or the FBI something like that, so let me let me fix this the organizations. Who Plant people with the protesters to incite them to do more. And once they get it over more then you can bring in the police to tear gas, the rubber bullets, and then next thing you know he come national. God, and now all your causes is washed behind the mask club, looting and violence gas terrorists, tight organizations, and they have different agendas so to speak so. These, rubber bullets joke rubber bullets. Feel a rubber. That's for damn show you. Know. I, it can put you down Shirley. Yeah. Well, see they. They focused CNN's folks really hard on his white girl that had been hit by his rubber bullet. Her, badge and her moment. You know look man. No this. They want to escalate this thing and turn this thing into some other bullets. That's why you have to be smart and like Steven Jackson said we can't hustle backwards. Get out there and protest, but be smart. Don't hustle backwards. Don't allow them to change the narrative from the George Floyd to Aubrey the Trayvon Martin's the area. Don't let them change the deaths and injustices and flip it over to violence and looting. Criminals in the street. That's all they WANNA say so. Do they can wash away? Thank you very much. Everybody in good morning. Well Murder Victim George. Floyd's body is being flown back to Houston where he grew up. Although no funeral plans have been announced yet by the family, George Floyd was a star tight end on his high school's football team. He played in its Nineteen Ninety two state championship game at the Houston. Astrodome also turns out that the now. Charged with taking his life Derek Shaven most likely knew him because both worked security at the same club, the former owner Maya Sante. Maria told a local TV station Mr. Floyd work inside as a bouncer and that the as an off duty cop show and worked outside. She also says the show had a pretty short fuse. She told a local TV station this often pulling out mason pepper spray unnecessarily in. In her opinion. He looks like the Minnesota Governor Tim. Walz may have just discovered that there are two Minnesota's. We don't just right near the top on educational attainment we rank near the top on on personal incomes on homeownership on life expectancies things that make this and one that came out a while back we we ranked second in a survey of the fifty states second in happiness behind Hawaii. But, if you take a deeper look and peel it back, which this week is peeled back. All of those statistics are true if you're white. If you're not we rank near the bottom. Nevertheless Minnesota's governor has called in thousands of national guardsmen to try and control the violence over the weekend. Nationwide protests curfews in Atlanta Chicago Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle, the guards been activated in fifteen states you, societas press says some forty four hundred arrests have been made in total. However, thousands more demonstrated peacefully in places like Phoenix and Albuquerque protests set fire outside the White House. The now ex-minister Minnesota by the way Dirk Chauvet has a court appearance a week from today. We'll know about that WB L. S. H. Well. We have the back to the Steve Harvey Morning Show you're listening to. Morning Show! Everybody has promised. My special guest is noted. Politician. He's an attorney, a political correspondent for CNN. He's been on frontlines of all covering widespread protests. And riots, and so we invited join us, so he could shed light He's A. He's an incredible already. When it comes to speaking about how we feel and of what we think, and really what's going on, so please welcome to show our buddy Mr Bakari sellers. Well. Welcome thank you. For Having Emma, listen first of all. I WanNa, do some I want to congratulate you on your brand new book. He's got a new book out. Everybody's call my vanishing country a memoir. And, I don't know if you could have written this at a at a better time. Because it speaks a on a black man's journey. Through the south past, present and future. Tell us about the book. Well first of all. Thank you for having me and when you write a you never expect or want your book to come out and during the pandemic. To say the least, but ended book I. Just Talk About. I outlined the pain and trauma of what it means. People acting this country I was born into a family struggle My father was shot. February eight, thousand, nine, hundred, sixty eight. Enforcement in what's known as the Orangeburg massacre in three other young men were killed enrichment Daniel, ammen, no metal. On the campus of south, Carolina State, university in ABC and I chronicle that all the way through, and you know the pain and trauma that most people don't even imagine a father going to prison. I'm getting out of prison and having a felony. My Mom gave birth to my big sister while my father was actually still incarcerated I'm so all of that trauma. I'm book in with the fact that I lost my good friend. in two thousand fifteen Clemente Pinkney with the pastor of mother. Emmanuel Ame Church when Dylann roof walked in and shot him in the neck while they were praying. after Bible study and killed eight others. What's call the massacre and so I just talk about his pain in this trauma, and although metro may not be your trauma. I tried to talk about the perseverance hope that's required on unnecessary to be a person of color to be black in this country and systemic racism issue congestive that we keep playing out right before I for that. I think I. Think the two men. When you book comes out at a time like this, I can't think. Is Kinda specially placed because this is a good time for a lot of people still at home I know I'm still practicing social distancing and you know I. mean the TV business would is closed so that that that type of work for me as often so you know we all do. Our radio shows from our homes now. Because of technology, the book everybody's calling. My vanishing country is memoir with talking. Talking to such a compelling time for this book to come out, and what a because telling us about someone everybody in the Steve. Harvey Nation Let's go out and get a copy of this book man. You can download it to but it's called my vanishing country a memoir when we come back. We're going to talk with them about what's going on today in this country, and how what his views on it on all of it, so we'll be right back with our special guests, because sellers you're listening to. Morning Show. Everybody. We're back a special guest this morning because sellers want to tell you, some of these got a book out. Listen to me. It's called my vanishing countries memoir and he was telling us before the break is about a black man's journey through the south past and present, and is sort of really telling because a lot of it is very fitting of what's been happening you talked about. His father was murdered in sixty eight and had. All the people at a friends. He's lost along the way and I think I. Don't know a black man in this country that don't have. That story. Because ban, I've lost so many friends and relatives. Along the way, and now we hear in this. These deaf, so we got because sell now because with everything. That's going on man. What what is? What. What what's your take owners? How are you seeing? Play Out! my father. My father was still with us. He just got shot at sixty eight nine. Hundred dollars every other. but but you know you brought up a good point and I you know racism is killing black people in this country to. A systemic racism killing black folk in this country to way. I do cove at nineteen and people want to say. Why are black people dying at higher rate than their white counterparts, and the reason being is because we had these systemic injustices. Take the story that I tell my vanishing country about where I'm from Denmark South Carolina I grew up in food as it which means that you can't go to three miles to get access to clean foods that are healthy fruits and vegetables. You're drinking dirty water so you more inclined to and take pollutants in and things that are not good for your system. You're inhaling bad air. Because, you're living next to a Brownfield manufacturing plants. Your hospitals closed because you don't expand Medicaid, so you don't have access to quality care, and you take all of these systems in the you overlay it with the pandemic. You understand why and you know this, saying he. My father says it all the time. When when America gets a cold like folks, get the flu well. Now America had covert and black folk dying. And so you look at those disparities and those injustices, and then you look at a model break who got killed in a good old fashioned south, Georgia father son lynching. You look at Brianna Taylor. They served a no warrant and they. They killed her. They shot her. They shot at her over twenty times. And then you have George. Floyd, who died with a need to the neck for over nine minutes, and all of this has to do with one simple fact state. That for since since INA, -til mega evers Jimmy Lee Jackson beyond them. We have never received the benefit of our humanity in this country. You cannot tell me that officer that those officers they looked at George. Floyd anything but being less than human. I made the mistake of saying that they killed him like a dog and somebody corrected me because they said if he was a dog. All for those officers would have already been arrested already. Steve Cardio Question Question Hey guys James Brown I'm from Columbia South Carolina and I went to. Denmark. Dimmer Tech so my question to you is how much has. Changed from when you live I know it is probably changed a lot since I was a long time ago. How much has it changed since you live? Still really close I'm just being Columbia but I'll tell you that the city that wants was bashing for Economic Mobility Houston. My grandfather Cleveland fell at the at the motel down there in the fifth showing downtown. Drove a cab and you know. My family's been in Denmark for seventy five years and you know once once used to have like most of the most of the black south. You had small businesses. You had one or two plants where people had those fifteen twenty dollar an hour job. All of those things are gone. And so what I knew to be my home to be where people could actually black folk could have a middle class lifestyle. That's literally vanishing before I is let alone the ideals that this country promised. And so now is the time for real solution. You want people to get off the street. Don't tell us it just go. Give us a real solution. We're tired of doing the same thing over and over again. Still getting killed him becoming Hashtag now I want to tell you some got a book out is called my vanishing countries a memoir, so we'll be right back without special guest because seller you're listening to. Morning Show. On everybody! We're back special guest this morning. Because sellers these got a book out is called my vanishing country, a memoir about a black man journey through the south past and present listened to me. Here's the thing that I thought. I thought when social media came out. And I thought that once they saw what we knew was already happening. Once they could see video of Rodney King of of all of Eric God, no off. If they could see it, then they would get it and and that was solving. I can't tell you how wrong I was. Because he's A. Roof thirty five years old right and you know I talk about the trauma. I've lived through, so I can only imagine. With more years in this world. What what that means I I look at my father seventy five. I'm thirty five and we have many of the same shared experiences and I bring that up to you because. They had we had the picture an Ebony magazine of Emmett till. It till was brutally beaten and lynched thrown in the bottom of the Mississippi River. And his face was beaten, and he had no bones left in it, and his mother had the courage to allow the world to see what racism and bigotry done to our son. They saw that and they didn't care. They saw what happened on the Edmund Pettus Bridge Blake. And nobody cares and so right now I'm looking. I am telling people that if you were asking for peace. Without asking justice, you just need to be quiet right now is the time not just for peace, but it's time for justice become a verb, and people are ready to see action. Right and I'll tell you what's making this appear to be different from me, and because I started speaking out about it a couple of weeks ago. Until. White's become outraged. That's did it won't change. So this is what like all on CNN last night. New York they're protesting in New York and I'm talking about you. You're talking to epicenter of this covid. Nineteen And to see that many New Yorkers come out there. Mostly young people and ninety nine percent of them have a mask. But out in the streets, protesting to see him in Atlanta protesting to see him in Kansas City, protesting I mean I'm looking at whites. And it's starting to give me a little sense of hope. He'll because now is not just black people that you have to rest. You'RE GONNA have to rest some other people. And the and the New York Police Department moved out in large forces last night man to try to clear these all of these what they haven't curfews and everything, but look man I'm like you I get it. I get it and you know full reporters on there, talking about what the looting makes no sense I got it. Don't believe explain some tea. As Mon Luther King said that rioting is the language of the unheard. If meme if you're not listening. And I'm I can take this brick and throw it through. This woman can. Can you hear me now now for the looting? I don't agree with it because that's taking the process to Fawn. I, want us to be very careful because they are looking for way, too. As told wanted to call us today, they're looking for a way to change the narrative and especially with this president. We have so. We've got to be careful because he. He got his finger in the national guard button. 'cause he wants to appear like he's doing something as the president and instead of. Making sure that justice serve He. He got his button on the in arm national army right now, so we gotta be careful. Indeed and and you know one of the things that I'll say just to piggyback on what you what you're talking about. People are looking for someone to channel that energy and where to China channel that energy, and so when I'm talking about making justice suburban. I'm talking about doing things like lowering the federal standards to bring civil rights cases against these bad office, criminal cases against these that often right I'm talking about making sure that we limit qualified immunity, so they can't hide behind their shield when we sued them and I think about this, come think about those fees. You know George. Floyd paid for the law. Enforcement Police Department. They killed him because the Department of Justice. Our federal tax dollars goes to these police department and they don't have to have. They don't have to have any accountability. They don't have to have any transparency. They don't have to have any oversight and so if we're going to pay for these police departments, they have to have those things because George. George Floyd Brianna Taylor? They literally paid for the monies to go. Police departments that killed them without any oversight, so these are some of the tangible things that I want people to offer. I'm tired of Democrats, and Republicans telling me to go home and in vote. Wait till November. No, I want something now. Because November at the rate we're going. That's at least ten more black folk they don't kill. He's keeping in all the way one hundred. All the way. That's the interview and seen. The, Mike. I listen man I tell you listen everybody. His book out is call my vanishing country. And what a great title in. You just didn't know it was gonNA drop at this particular time, but it. It is man my vanishing country. It you would think that that that we will be saying away with this and we're getting better and better, but it seems like has taken a term for the worst and I think the book is a great read is called all my vanishing countries. A It's it's a memoir. Excuse me by vanishing country memoir I, think it'd be great reading some. We could all pick up on car. Thank you always being out front brother speaking on our behalf so eloquently. Thank you, brother. And a young brother. You didn't have to give me this platform and lift my book up. I! Think it's timely. I'm just really grateful for you. Always being there for us and giving us an opportunity, so thank you meant a man I'm wishing. Thank you because sellers. Everybody is served. You know what Bakari is saying is. is pretty much. Spot on. You know he such a great speaker when it comes to. speaking about the concerns. Of Us and you know, this is just a trying time. All of us I was thinking the other day. Here's a deal. I was just going over some stuff. That just black people have had to deal with. All this began with slavery. Yes, it's savory lasted full four hundred, years. Oh okay, then you ended. Then we had the recession we was in that. When everybody to you know then recession. Then we had to deal with segregation segregation. We dealt with all of that. Then we dealt with what they called integration, but nobody wanted to integrate, so we dealt with that then we dealt with the civil rights movement. Then we dealt with The nobody could ride on the front of the bus that you had to go to the back of the restaurant. Then we had city. City ends. We had lunch counter city as we had bull connor down in Alabama and Georgia George Wallace. We went through all that the the Marcello. Washington and we did all of that and here we watched him. Kill Martin. Luther King when I lost all hope at that point because I said. Wow, here's man who was just making us. Try to hold each other's hands. They don't WanNa hold a hands, so they killed a violent so i. lost all of that. We had to go through that. Then we went through affirmative action. Then next thing you know we've been through I'm tired of dealing with. Catastrophe and Twenty get! I just speed forward. And here we come now. The whole world is dealing with covid nineteen. But then the whole time. Before the Cova Nineteen, we was just dealing with Eric, gardeners, and and the Trayvon. Martin's and got a whole list of names. All breed had just happened in February but we got to tape later and then right after that this man George Floyd. All of this is in the middle of the pandemic. GETS ME is why they don't get it. That's the that's the weird part it. They don't get it I. Don't have been through. They just don't get it. What are you? Why are you so mad? And did did you? Did you know that this? This police officer that was kneeling on this man. They said a couple of days ago. They actually had worked together in an establishment. Yeah. Cured the owner of the club was on TV and she was saying that they knew each other. Yeah, they knew notice. The same club? All right all right. We're going to take a break here. We need a break. Yeah, and we were hit seventy, six, thousand back in November twenty eighteen, and we just recovered from that or finally flowing and getting back on I see to just get hit again and now we were literally less with like four years shoes in one hand I. Because, I understand the pain in our station. Everyone is going to, but. We're together in this like we. I stand for everything that's going on. When I saw that video George like Sinisa I were heartbroken. Store had to take that hit. We get it like we. Now I saw can be replayed, but it's still painful for business owners that we have to rebuild again what the police don't. Let me, say this Protest, fair protests is so kate. But it gets into the level that it has gotten to a lot of places. And business owners off affected by WHO have nothing to do with the injustices of judicial system, the injustices of Police relationships that are a lot of these cities. Some some of the police officers behavior towards us. These businesses have nothing to do with it, and the so innocent people have to suffer. For something really not a part of the Debre very much victims of all this team sales, and so that's why we're trying to say look. Protests protests peacefully, even George. To the people that he was elected to govern now even though. He lost the popular election by several million votes and due to the old archaic. -duced. electoral college votes so southern states could have the same amount of pool as northern state, and that needs to be abolished, so we can just get to the masses, and what the majority of people stay because there's no more south in north to south ain't rise and again you've done all y'all GonNa do. And so we are just supposed to be one nation under God. That's what is supposed to be. We have a leader. That we can expect. Nothing more of. He has never governed people before. He has never served people before. He has never inspired people before, nor has he ever led people before to expect him to do that all of a sudden. Is Crazy? Everybody's wondering why he is now. They're trying to write a speech that sound like something. He would say and hope then that he'll stick to the script. Other than that. He has nothing to say. You know goodwill president. Obama would have had something to say I got news for you. Joe Biden has had something to say about it. All the mayors have had something to say about it. We've had everybody say something about it except the the president in the highest. So impersonal. So, what does that leave us? Well I've been thinking about this day. And even though I fully one hundred percent support all the protests. I think protests is important. I think it is I. Think the voice. Of the oppressed and downtrodden when you're not listening, these these protests can turn into riots. I don't support the riots. I don't want to see this happen because I know what they're going to do. Because I've watched them. Do it time and time again, so we've got to be smart. Stephen, Jackson was on the show and say don't hustle backwards. We cannot allow this government because this is what he will do now he's got his finger on the trigger, waiting to pull the trigger to say national guards to all these cities, so he can appear to be doing something to stop the looting and burning of our major cities, and we will lose George Floyd's death to Aubrey death of Trayvon Martin Eric. Gardner's into so on and so on so also and list is too long for me to list, but we will lose that if we allow them to take the burning and the looting and make it about that because listen. None of these black men gave their lives, so we can loot. Or Bird! That's not the sacrifice of their life, and we can't diminish their lives and lower down to that level right there. Now got you angry. Because I mad to. I've been mad about this a lot longer than a lot of people. But we also got to be smart. We hustle backwards with. We cannot let them change. The Narrative Colin Kaepernick got on his knee. When the national anthem was played for this very reason right here, this was why he knelt, but did you see what they did? Since two owners came down a started locking arms with the players. All of a sudden the president. He saw moment to seize it, and he turned it into the troops and the American flag. And all of a sudden car, Colin Cabinet had kneeled four. They had changed the narrative. They've done it to us over and over your. When Martin Luther King had a sitting at lunch counters and riding on the front of the bus when Rosa Park, they've always tried to switch to narrative eternity into some mills. They took affirmative action and flip that around to where it was against white folks. Affirmative action was not against white folks, but they turn it around. They took black lives, matters, and they it into white lives matter to. That's their specialty. We cannot let them do that this time. Speed smart. y'All be careful protests, but keep your hands up in the air. Keep your sign showing. But be respectful of the law. Don't give them a Paean to stick you with y'all be careful out there. I'LL BE CAREFUL TIM may keep protesting, but be careful. Young people don't let them flip the script those in my closing remarks. Were all Steve Harvey contests?
