"Tariffs and we stayed with octopus. We've gone to octopus. Go from us twelve at night to half past four so four hours. It's just five pence per kilowatt hour. That's going to do our ev charging vat when i'll charge little battery bank of how here in the studio. I've just got two hundred sixty pounds of storage on some leisure batteries. That work for ups ready but also do provide some great backup and I really. It's not a longtime solution for us. But i'll charge. The batteries overnight means that we can give the grid an easy time When it's more expensive later on in the day and so again if you wanna move to octopus a. Now might not be the time by the way because if you with your existing supply and prices have been going up. electricity prices. A crazy right now. It might be better off if you coming to the end of. You'll fixed with them if you just stay because there's rules in place to how much your price can go up by whereas moving supply you might not playing more but if you are moving to octopus just to remind i have my referral code my friends and family my podcast friends. The top of my twitter page up in the show notes of this podcast as well. Because you get fifty quid if you move to them and that goes a long way at the minute as well and also i get fifty to help run this podcast and so if you don't know support on patriot but you want to try and support the show. Somehow well you can move over. I just find every interaction i've had with. Octopus has been really good emails. Come back within a couple of hours and you get through to human. Which is really nice. I've never really cold them very much. It was kind of email because he's been re re convenient but look. I like the online dashboard. I like the apps. Connect to the. Api i find the data stuff. They do really interesting. I can dig into my energy usage so check out my referral link if you want to get yourself fifty quid for moving to octopus and it helps out this podcast as well. So asking you about your what you've done with your own home tariff if anything when you went. Ev rajiv narayan said owning an e. Has made me much more aware of the cost of my electricity and it's carbon intensity. If i had the option to shop different tariffs i would but here in san antonio is not an option you did report some time ago about shell subsidiary that was providing a tariff charging gm vehicles for free in the evening in texas could mp to energy but so far not been able to get anyone at the company. Fortunately says raji actress is pretty cheap where he is. He pays nine to eleven cents per kilowatt hour. So yeah you're paying not much more than i pay overnight for my four hours cheap right and yet during the day. I'm paying twenty three pence. And that's probably what twenty eight thirty cents in your language which is a lot of money as a result. He says more than cost. He's actually more interested in how clean the electricity is. So he has eight point. One kilowatts of rooftop peavy seventeen and a half kilowatts community sided up and the two systems offset all of his driving. Brian smith says i'm an australian who has lived in florida for twenty years. Our power costs a flat rate of eleven to twelve cents per kilowatt hour all day all night visa coming in the area but then mostly tesla's our power companies a licence monopolies in that prices have to be approved by an oversight board says brian. Well that's really different. I love learning about everybody. Listens to this show. It's a global audience. Now and i love. I love learning from you about what it's like where you live so here. I'll choice of tens and tens of different companies. Obviously there is one company. If you like that owns the cable to my house i k and and an although different companies will sell me in inverted goes renewable energy green energy clearly the electrons. Coming down the line and to my neighbors and to my neighbors neighbors. It's all the same. It's just to do with whether that buying their electricity from kind of supplier level. But either way really interesting that you don't you don't have a choice. You can't move in florida. You get what you get but it is a monopoly. So the pricing is influenced. And i think that's really cheap by the way brian. He says i suspect power. Prices will remain flat like this. The first person to suggest making power cost more during the day unless at night will be accused of trying to kill old people by cutting off their air conditioners. He says yeah. I guess it being in florida. Hot and humid of a two words to live by. Ac on during the day. I guess if you've got some pva on the rate if you're lucky enough you compile yourself with so many senior citizens in the states. No one's gonna suggest. Having variable power prices he thinks regardless of how many days are in the world one. Small price difference. He says you first thousand kilowatt hours cost eight or nine cents than anything over costs a bit more. He says okay. Moving on renai. Schneider says i support of this podcast. Miser says he says you're talking about octopus and your dynamic tariffs not for us. Though in switzerland you're bound by one local electricity provider. Omb if you're a company that uses a loss of power can you have individual tariffs wide. I mind when in my case the bill comes from out village government and in now village we have one of the lowest tariffs in switzerland for private people. Ten swiss cents slow tariff in thirteen for the high tariff is about nine eurocents at night and during weekends twelve year essentially in the night. So that's pretty cheap. Well how's it. Good and a bad side says the amortization of the solar on my reef will be longer as i charge the cars with solar for most of the time. That's okay from me. Run bob from san jose's as hairy northern california energy is provided by. Pg in rates have been going up consistently for the decade that i've been tracking them. Probably the maximum rate the government allows. Our primary house has solar installed in october twenty twelve nine years ago generate over fifty two megawatt hours. Of course you are in somewhere very sunny. Ron has outright. It was now right purchase. And we've since recovered i investment. If you years ago. I had selected rights plan e six which is time of use he says which paid well during subtler producing hours and that's been waiting on benefit in recent years. Yes run we can do something similar. I'm i have been on until today actually either. I mentioned the agile tariff. It's colts every half an hour. It might pricing changes but also this agile outgoing now. If stayed with that. I could've exported some pv which we are having installed as a whole story that. I wanna tell you about on this podcast make some videos. Teddy the story so yeah. We're getting solar thermal and tv but our system because of a funny shaped roof we gotta get three point. Seven kilowatts up there so and it's east west facing so we are not going to go for a big system but will do whatever we can so it's not really worth me staying on an outgoing tariff even though it can be twenty thirty forty pence per unit if the follows the wholesale market really dynamic even outgoing but again. I'm not going to do that. Because we're consuming you know with with a small p. v. system will consume everything we can make and barely any leftover for the car. He said home. Electricity is costing me eight cents per kilowatt hour adjusted with solar. Because we've had more folks living here recently than planned. That's changing so prices should drop to near zero with just the meter fee. Which like you'll. I would call it standing charge right regardless of what you use. Well that's amazing run. Thank you so much to hear your story of what it's like for energy and charging your evey and generating your own and california raisman remain. Guinea says i changed my electricity supply. It's octopus using your referral code. He says thank you so much. He has eight percent. Gte since last december that's great job by the way every year i shop around for a better deal but this year i was looking for a tariff. They'll give me cheaper. electricity nights. Octopus go was anyone that i could find. Day rates were comparable if not cheaper than what he was paying with eon but a night rate of five pence was a big drill. He does his twenty two mile commute on electricity. And if you gotta plug in hybrid. That's the way to do it. Plug in overnight do it on electric power. And he said before switching to the tariff. I would charge. As soon as i came home as i run the battery down as much as i can during my commute when would want some juice in case i'll have to pop out but the cheaper night tariff. He makes sure he charges during the day. He really really has do to this tariff. We've also taken to running out dishwasher and machine at nights using the night cycle for the latter further cost savings. I think we'll do the same. I think we'll do the same. It's it's really interesting conversation isn't it so we'll obviously will charge the. Ev seemed to be vs. I'll tell you that story as well and Overnight between twelve and four. It's five pence will charge relates. Four hours. we do have the sappy Zappia to which we got because we knew that we were saving up for peavey. The way it's worked out with the size of our system. I'm not sure kaufman. The high of summer will ever really gonna be getting any excess from the grid to judge the car now. The whites worked out. And i've ended up working from home full time. So you know the air conditionings on amusing trinity during the day whereas before i was in an office right five days a week so i'm not sure will end up doing that. But there's so much. I want to talk to you about but now the time now is about you and your answers to question of the week right coming up very soon. We'll talk about mattie allen steve and ian amel set a new question of the week as well stick around now. Messy says matthew chemo says since we got out. Id three in december. We thought about changing to market priced exchange electricity. Since out deal was fixed until feb twenty three we couldn't turned out to be a blessing in disguise prices through the roof. We pay no monthly payment and a fixed four point. Two eight cents per kilowatt hour from electricity. Which is amazing. That's really good. In finland and so with the taxes we pay. It's about eleven cents per kilowatt hour. We shop for the best prices every two years when contracts and make sure that we are one hundred percent sio two free interesting mattie so you fixed and you can't leave so you've fixed until february twenty three whereas i'm moving to a tariff. Today would octopus go. Which is fixed for year went to the end of next year. I am free to leave it anytime so. I'm not locked in with them. But my prices are locked in and i also move by the way which is interesting. Because i'm with octopus. I can move from small tariffs so if i'm with octopus and then after a month i wanna go to octopus. Go faster which means that. My cheap rate moves earlier in the in the evening to maybe nine. Thirty eight thirty thing rather than overnight. I can do that and if after a month i think. Well i want to get back to and do hoffman apparatus. I can do that so you just older yourself. Self service online on the dashboard. Very interesting right allen. Northcott says i don't believe your audience of enthusiasts always places saving money as their top priority. When i lived in an apartment even before he owned the boat in the model three. I chose a plan that was renewables. says allah costs was secondary. Now that i live in a house and drive electric. I have rooftop solar the cubs. My power needs during sunny months. Thank you so much allen. Steve shade says just go off at a time of use residential pricing by shedding my bolt to charge overnight an ending six. Am i'll pay nine. Cents season the us versus thirteen to twenty seven percent saving. I drive my boat. Twenty thousand miles a year at a great rate of four point five miles per kilowatt hour. Because he's doing slow speeds and using time of use tariffs super off. Peak equals twelve till six. Am that is about one hundred and sixty dollars savings every year on that one vic alone steve. Thank you in the maths or math. You would say that's amazing. Thank you so much. Ian says we changed taras when we got our. Atv's we move to octopus. Go which gives you cheap overnight at five pence thirteen during the day and affixed charger. Twenty five p yet in your on the old octopus. Go of thirteen pence during the day. I'm on twenty three pence during the day. Because it's gone up a skull same because of the energy crisis that we are in like say we only did it because we have a small. Pva system being commissioned and so hopefully during the day we can run the computers the con maybe washing. I dunno you know. I think in the winter we won but in the summer Maybe the dishwasher in the washing machine will go on during the day so that we use generation rather than overnight when it's five p we need to work all out and i can't wait to play of course charging the is part of it as well he says i didn't want a variable tariff as i'm too conservative small seep this was inconvenient as the time windy was twelve thirty to thirty five john. Cows but dishwashers and hot tub and washing machine. It wasn't perfect then. In says the tesla power wall and it changed everything he said. It really helped We then went to go faster which is a longer period. It's five hours of cheap right at a slightly high cost. Though with the battery and charging cars overnight. He shifts ninety five percent of his consumption to the night and so he pays a very very low by seven pence on average because the blended price. I love that. I'm stating that phrase. The blended price anti has soya and of course exports as well because he got in on the tariff which is super duper we along past vat so yeah i mean a home battery would be the next stage for me. The savings account is dry up. Put it that way. There is no chance of a battery yet. But i'm really interested in that as well and Got some some ideas. Can't afford powell tesla other stuff looking interesting. Scots van niekerk. Says i'm excited. I'm in the waiting room. For a tesla model. Why all they don't tell you about coming in march. I called my electricity company and asked them to switch out the basic meter for day. Night to jewel right. It's more expensive during the day but fifty percent less expensive at night. It's a says it's an brainer rights. And he just has to decide. Now which charging option to go with tesla connector of the name of fourteen fifty and stephen stairs. Has i live in south west georgia. Usa we have relatively cheap electricity. Eight by ten cents a kilowatt hour so especially the rates on necessary however immediately upon buying my first evey he put in a seven point. Eight kilowatts peavy ray. I now charge my twenty twelve leaf. Who our school. My friend steve. Wow guy back ten years old. I like you. A two thousand twelve leaf. And he's twenty nineteen bolts on sunny days. The ultimate electric rate is a free. One from your I really enjoyed that this week. Love the cars. "Week reboot and thanks to the Anthony Luhan from the pitmasters podcast, I bring back the director of technology at Lyon Energy Steve Shades of to show and to talk solar energy and how it could benefit you the backyard cook as well as you the competition cook and we're doing it from the pit master podcast in the Great City of Utah. So we raised to the hotline and welcome back. Steve. Steve Harvey Pal. Great. Greg. Thanks for having me back. Guess what Audio's great? No doubt. Anthony and I only for seventeen hours yesterday to make sure that the audio was good. So let's go ahead and run it right back from beginning little background you personally professionally, and then we'll build into the line energy stuff. Sure so My background is in electrical engineering degree huge barbecue enthusiasts, of course that doesn't hurt. I've been at Lyon energy now for. Seven years. And about the last four is the director of technology. And We make portable power. You know power storage is really what we're all about ad. In this case, the product we're talking about is portable. and. It has a great. Impact a great. Application when it comes to outdoor grilling, right because now these grills smokers, they need power to run, and that's what we're interested in providing people. Wherever. That may be. Director of technology sounds like a very important capacity with the company. Are you driving the technological vision of the company trying to push the envelope as it were? Part of it I was working primarily an engineering before which had a lot more impact on the individual products Now my focus is more on. The software that we use to run our business and on the website and. Everything that goes along with that. So You know our digital presence I guess. Is a lot about what I do but. During the time that the Safari Lt, which is the product we're talking about the moment was being created I. Did have a pretty large impact on that product the time Steve's Jay's joining me here on the show lion energy dot com, the website. So do you have a quick thumbnail background of how lion energy came to be and how it got off the ground? Yes Oh originally. Originally we had more focus in emergency preparedness and we focused more on doing whole sale and we focused on. You know we were selling to we were making price for other companies and putting their name on it. For several years and So in the past few years with you know at least five years of experience. During, the time I had been here we started going more direct to consumer and started to push more of the line energy brand instead of making products for other companies and so That's been going really well for us and this barbecue market has really been a big part of that as well, which is always a market that I'm happy support. Is there a good margin in or is there? Is there a better margin going direct to consumer versus private label? Typically in the market people would say, yes. Really we just want to be able to have a positive impact as a company and have people know that it's line energy? Building a brand, US is not so much about going direct to consumer and having a better margin It's more about having people know that there's a company out there that's got back and it's going to provide good products and good service and being able to be recognized as that company. And just be powering a lot of pellet smokers. Successfully let's talk about some items that you are offering. The consumers were obviously going to be talking about the far as lt but what else have in the portfolio? So. At like I said we focus on power storage and we try to cover the whole spectrum from very small all the way up to a very large so. If you go to our website, you'll see that we have products ranging from power banks. All. The way up to Y- batteries that people can use in their RV's We also do whole home storage, right. So you could you know the converters in the battery backups that people use for off grid homes and cabins and things like that. Are also available. Right now are lithium batteries are also very popular. Like I was saying for those typically used as replacements for our or they're used. Like for trolling motors and boats the Safari Lt has gained a lot of. Traction in the barbecue community because it's lights ten pounds, it's has the.
