"Hmm. Once you realized that this was who you were looking for, Did you say to her? It's you. What did you say to her? Er Well, I, uh You know, I told her you're my bank robber and you're under arrest. And, you know now you gotta understand She never admitted anything to me. And once I told her, she was under arrest for bank robbery. I saw no one motion from her. Steve Powell in his agents arrested Peggy Jo Tallis and immediately took her into custody. She was 48 years old. Had you ever been so stumped in your whole career? I mean, when you think about all of the bank robberies that you handled in your long career was this the one that does this one really stick out? Well, No, it does. I'll be honest with you. Because a few at Phoebe, I'll have to show you the surveillance pictures from the robberies. I mean, if you could have told me while that's a female, I'd like to hear you say that because it was so far from what I was looking for. They want it actually happened. Yes, I was. I was amazed and you know Phoebe, If you can understand Now I feel like comedian. It just never clicked with me that it was her. You know, I wonder. She'd been so smart. Um All all through those other bank robberies. What do you think happened? You know, it seems like a amateur mistake. I know what you're saying. And Uh, invariably, they will finally make a little mistake. Now this one wasn't a little mistake, but she had robbed that first back, and I'm sure once she got away from that back, she counted the money and said Old Germany. I didn't get enough. So she was in a hurry for some reason, and she took that stolen plate off of her car. And went and robbed the second bank with her real license plate visible. And that's what brought her down that day. Had that not happened. Lord knows how long we were been looking for her. Thank you. Joe Tallis was convicted of three counts of bank robbery and sentenced to 33 months in federal prison. Skip Hollandsworth wrote about her for Texas monthly in 2000 and five He reported that a psychologist named Richard Schmidt sat down with Peggy Jo Tallis. Richard Schmidt said that when he would ask her questions, she would just sort of look at him. And matter of fact, we smoke her cigarette, shrugging her shoulders, shaking her head as if she wasn't sure what what else to tell him. She didn't know how to tell him, she said. You know, she needed some money to help out her mom who was sick. And who's medications cost too much money? And This psychologist Smith Was enamored with her just to Steve Powell, the FBI agent was enamored with her. What was she doing? She goes well, I just wanted to pay for my mother's medications. But I really had no intention of robbing the second bank or a third or 1/4. And then she pulled out her cigarette case and lit another cigarette. And what Smit realize was is that she deep down just enjoyed the heck out of robbing banks. Richard Schmidt would later describe Peggy Jo Tallis as a nice normal looking woman. When she got out of prison, she laid low she continued to live with and care for her sick mother. She got a job at a marina just outside of Dallas. Years passed, and after her mother died, Peggy Jo bought an RV. That same year, Steve Powell retired from the FBI and moved from Dallas to love it. This is criminal. The first robbery was in May of 1991, the second with seven months later in December of 1991 in Irving, Texas. On that day, Steve Powell says Cowboy Bob parked his car directly in front of the bank calmly got out of the driver's seat. And walked into the building. Now, with my experience, I knew either this bank robber is an idiot or there's something wrong with this because most bank robbers do not want you to get a good destruction of their getaway vehicle, and especially the license plate number because we're going to be able to track that license plate number and I, maybe at your house before you even get home. Well, this person was using a plate that in verbally turned out to have been stolen from another V here core, which led us off in a wild goose chase and we again we had no clues. "This podcast discusses domestic violence criminal behavior. Murder and adult themes while not explicit. Listener discretion is advised. Steve Powell met with the FBI into coma in late February of two thousand and ten he told the special agents, his grandsons, Charlie and Brayden didn't seem to miss their mother all that much dared to ask the kids any questions or comments to everybody. The kids are very happy. The only communists. In fact, that, you know, Jimmy, really miss their mother. I don't even know I think they do occasionally and the mayor that for the came to my house, maybe there were some questions than whatever. But the kids really have. No, they've never made any comments is not anything nothing there. The way they act that suggest no nothing like that. There's no indication nothing. Nothing more. But about the way they're thinking about the drafting reacting talking Steve's claim that the boys didn't talk about their mom seemed dubious at the time. We have everything possible shield goes grandsons for the media. And from this story. I don't turn on the TV commendable, by the way. I've done in a gated community. So the media can't park out in front of my house, and you know, shine halogen lights, also, right? Yeah. That's weird. And yet the people the Cox family and their friends have just put signs up down every light hosts going in and out of our property with Susan's picture on it. And I walked Charlie to the park the other day like the waist down. There's this thing is as long as picture on the site, both vinyl signs. I mean, I'm trying to shield these kids from them. These people are so desperate, and they are. So they they'll stop at nothing to get those kids away from my home on April seventeenth of two thousand and ten steep type this into his digital journal this afternoon, Charlie commented that mommy is lost in the desert. Josh and Michael were also present. So we all heard it. I asked him where he had heard that. He said he had made it up in his own mind. Michael said, we've been talking too much about that desert. Search that was planned for April tenth supposedly a couple thousand people going to be searching in the area. Josh and the boys camped on the night of December six Susan went missing. Way back in the summer of two thousand and six Josh registered the domain name for a website, Susan Powell dot org. The following summer. He registered three more one each for his name, his son Charlie's name and the baby. Brandon's name. These were just the latest in a growing list of web addresses. He controlled going back to his college days. He'd built a site at Susan and Josh dot net for their wedding in two thousand and one a few years later as he tried to build a career selling real estate. He made Josh Powell realtor dot com. Josh's websites were not fancy. He liked web design though and worked constantly to improve his skills for a couple of years. He used the domain Charlie Powell dot org as a sort of sandbox where he could experiment. He built a password protected portion of the site and posted photos of Susan and the boys there throughout two thousand and nine Susan provided family and close friends with user names and passwords which were created by Josh. So they could see the photos as well. Susan preferred to just put those photos on my space or Facebook. But Josh wasn't all that interested in social media. He refused to let Susan use his computer for anything. But the most basic tasks like scanning his papers in two thousand and nine she finally spent one hundred dollars to buy her own computer at the time Josh groused about the expense and criticized her for buying a system, he considered out of date. Shortly after Susan disappeared. Someone provided detective Ellis Maxwell with a username and password for the Charlie Powell dot org website, he logged in and browsed through the photos of the Powell families trips to Topaz mountain and dinosaur national monument a few weeks later in early January. He tried to log in again, the credentials did not work. Josh had cut off access. A short time later a page popped up on another of Josh's domains, Susan Powell dot org. It claimed to be the official site for information about this beautiful woman her family and other things she loves text on the main page told visitors. It was the only source of new photos and videos of Susan while Josh wasn't personally interested in Facebook. He did pay attention to it in the days following Susan's, disappearance, her neighbor, and friend QC Hellawell had created a Facebook page to help spread information. And so at first we named it. The name of our church congregation. We call it the hundred thirty six ward group, and then I made it changed it like the next because I realized that it shouldn't be sounding like it's a church sponsored thing. And so we named it friends and family of Susan Powell. And then the group became huge like thousands of people joining like immediately, and it was just crazy. How fast it went tonight? Just made it to keep the neighborhood in contact with each other. So I could post the information in one place instead of having answer thirty or forty messages every day and fifty phone calls and public interest. And Susan's case fanned that growth the page soon had tens of thousands of followers. Many of whom had no qualms sharing their negative opinions of Josh. He

That voice you hear singing the harmony belongs to Susan. So when Steve Powell reached out to the FBI with word of his own theory about what had happened to his daughter in law. They were well aware of how he felt about her special agents. Russ Johnson and Gary France met with Steve Powell wild west valley city police observed from another room. The possibility that they're even in this country. Steve Powell wanted the FBI to look into the disappearance of Stephen coacher. A Saint George resident who vanished about a week after Susan did Steve Powell theorized. They might have tried to run off together. And framed Josh in the process. It's perfect. Perfect police did check that theory out. Meanwhile, agent Johnson told Steve Powell expected Josh to be arrested and he advised Steve against working with his son. If he when he gets arrested for this, those grandkids are going to need people that they know and love around now in hindsight the discussion took on a chilling tone from their sure I understand where you're getting because. "Not the Powell family side. Not the Cox family side, not the west valley polices side. But he knew things that had not yet made the news. But from what I know. Okay. And some of the things that have happened around this disappearance, specifically some of the things that Josh has done and said, okay. I think and and I think you're gonna probably have to at some point wrap your mind around this. It sounds like you started right where I'm gonna be and then you went away from that based on Josh behavior. But I think you're gonna have to wrap your your mind around. The fact I think Josh is going to be rested and charged with this crime. Okay with with with with homicide. Okay. So I do. And like I said this is me coming with us from somewhere else. And. And not having an interest. And I think that is what's going to happen. When that happens. I don't think Josh is told you even all the things that have happened. I think he knows a lot of this stuff that I know. And I don't think he's told you you may want to find some of that out for yourself. So that you can prepare yourself if this happens the way, I say, okay. And if happens that way, and I really think it will you you need to be aware that you know, that that's coming and and get get ready for that. Okay. That's I'm not saying I'm had the inside track. And and and and I know exactly what west valley and the DA's office is gonna do. I'm saying this is this is me guessing right now. Okay. And I think that's going to happen. I think that the things that I know are highly suspicious, and it's not, and I don't think that other things that I know indicate that Susan went anywhere voluntarily. Okay. So. My suggestion to you is start thinking about that. And and make sure you were not. Involved, and I'm not accusing you of anything right now. Okay. I'm not just saying make sure he'd never get involved with the covering up or the obstruction of investigation. And you know, you're here you're not doing that. Obviously you're talking to us you want to help. But when things go that other way. Don't be involved in any of that. Don't put yourself in jeopardy if he went he gets arrested for this. Those grandkids are going to need people that they know in love around them. F B I told Steve Powell two and a half months into the investigation that his son was likely to be arrested for Susan's murder. What's more the agents explicitly warned him he could himself wind up in trouble? If he attempted to help, Josh conceal evidence. Steve did not buy it. You telling me that you've got some information. That says that everything that you just said is that the Stephen kosher could not possibly anything. I don't know anything about Steve kosher, really. I can't I can't comment on that looked. They urged Steve to apply pressure to get Josh to work with the police. Make sure that. You know, if you if you really believe that that that that your initial feelings were wrong in draws truly isn't involved. Totally then you need to get him clear. And that means his cooperation in this matter is listed turn. It can be there that fun. There's so many unanswered questions such would appears to be highly suspicious behavior from Josh, okay? And way of the police even I can't answer that I don't know what. I Steve wondered how much of the information in the hands of police had come from his estranged daughter. Jennifer, the daughter who a month prior had visited the Powell family home and confronted Josh. While secretly wearing a wire this information coming from my daughter, Jenny, please, please, please the aware this is filled with his not. Okay. Well, because she had made some comments in to me that I saw Josh doing this. There may be some information that comes from her. I don't know. I don't know anything about that. You're just have just have some. Yes, some facts and some and some evidence that that I have been made aware of and I wasn't there to collected or and getting I've been aware of and and it does not does not look good for Josh. That's that's what I'm saying. Let me step in here for a moment and provide some perspective. I have obviously interviewed Jennifer, I've read her book a light in dark places..

"And. Great now, we will no longer looking at your fingers. We will look at you. So Josh and Susan entered their period of newlywed bliss. Josh believed it would last forever because most people don't have our friendship. We talk like most people don't talk in their marriage, even some people with incredible awesome. Marriages. They don't talk like we talk. We talk about everything. Josh's sister, Jennifer so differently. She noticed Susan tolerating her new husband's idiosyncrasies. I think there's you know, there's a little bit of a. You know, there's honeymoon phase where you're just you're willing to put up with a little bit more. Because you think well, you know, it'll go away. Right. It'll go away. Hopefully. But it doesn't Susan at all but moved into Josh's apartment before the wedding. But made the move official after they were wed. They were victims eight months later after getting into a dispute with the landlord Susan wrote about it in her journal. We did not trust renting and are paying off Josh's debts while he waits to take his last quarter in school for his bachelors in business management and get a job, and I credit to clean up. So we can get a loan for a house. I wanna has to call mine and come home to so I can prepare meals for Josh and clean decorate. They were in no financial position to buy a house. So Josh did what he often did when his life went wrong. He turned to his dad for help. Josh and Susan moved in with Steve Powell at the start of two thousand and two. The Powell family home didn't have enough bedrooms for Steve the other Powell boys. John and Michael as well as Josh and Susan they all coped as best. They could sectioning off a piece of the living room by hanging sheets as dividers. Life. There was not comfortable, Josh and Susan had very little privacy. Steve, John and Michael came and went at all hours making it difficult to get any sleep. Steve was ever present with his video camera. Susan was his favorite subject. Any women around here? So. It. So you get. Treat. Susan tolerated. Steve's filming she was usually friendly about it. Even if a little annoyed, but watching those videos now, she comes across as terribly naive. As a cosmetologist. "I didn't that is Katharine. Her story is absolutely wild. You'll hear it in one in this podcast. We're going to go through the case together, we will hear Susan in her own words, describe her crumbling everything works out, and we're all happy. Live happily ever after much as possible, we will peer into the deaths of abandoned mines as we follow searchers into the dusty wastes of the Utah desert. It was never out in the public everywhere that we look and how soon after she disappeared that we spent time looking we'll scour the hard drives police seized with search warrants items recruited, they were never going into. We'll hear Steve Powell describe a disturbing obsession with his own daughter-in-law and how she reacted to. Held. Mystic. She's not either. "That we will be on from one to three beginning on tuesday that will be the show is going to be like a furious sprint right we go spit hot fired you call with their bs you'll get checked what he said so so that will begin on tuesday and michael be back beginning on tuesday as well but we've got plenty to get to how does he get a long weekend man i think he had some other commitments seven three three seven sixty six sixty six lunches let's get through the day shall we we got a lot to discuss when it comes to the nfl draft last night and want your calls early we're going to talk to pat shurmur we're going to talk to peter king and we should maybe check in with sam darnold wavy tvd also are sky steve powell solo from pro football focus and the reason why wherever in pro football focus on is that they are the one entity and outlet that had baker mayfield as their highest rated quarterback we were shocked last night we're at hooters and thanks to everyone who came out to hooters that was actually really fun time so thank you and we'll get more about that later but they had baker mayfield number one all the analysts say that baker mayfield actually projects to be the best quarterback of this class and i'll tell you what pro football focus where chris collins worth has a stake in pro football focus they like have staked their reputation on this they have gone out on the limb this is the first time i remember them in their small history but very distinguished history so far going this far away from sort of what the pack had all thought well in this case analytics can kiss my fat as i don't know i think he might be kissing fan olympics fat ass after a while because it's a lot of factors that go in to see if a if a guy's gonna project to become an and and become a great player is not just you know what he is in college just being able to be developed this what you do after you know the film study all those things we'll see i'll tell you what i like the way that rosa responded like making that checklists talking about okay i don't i'm not concerned about the other positions that went before me.
