"Salvador perez entered the league in twenty eleven player. Hit more home runs while playing catcher one hundred and fifty eight of one hundred. Eighty one career homers who've come while perot's was behind the plate at your stat of the day on this wednesday our to dan patrick show riding by. Yeah more phone calls. Everybody's fired up on the cowboys and romo is eli. I don't even know how we started on this mclovin. Can we support up to. I like the question who is a better. Qb not who's going to get into fame but who's a better sure. Sure of carey's where people go is it funny. I think romo is gonna win this poll but eli is going to be the whole favor. Yeah i let me let me play russell. Westbrook junior the third. He was introduced to the los angeles media. And he had this to say about working with lebron james as you now. Brown is on the best players to play this game. And he's his ability to be able to kind of do everything on the floor allows me to be able to just figure it out. I'm coming to a championship caliber team and my job was to make sure that i'm able to make his game easy for him. But i'll find ways to do throughout the game as retains the ball handling and all that and it really doesn't matter there's many different ways you're going to gain have in the ball in your hands. I've been able to do that for many years and out Russell westbrook talked about finding success with anthony davis and lebron to be going to march fourteenth. Season each try to find ways to be able to uplift and make my teammates better around me brown. Our friends of mice. I me being a team teammate. My job is to come in and uplift and they do the same vice versa. Another season prolong. We will figure it out and then we'll be ups and downs and that's that's normal. That's okay We will figure out how to play the best way. We wanna play that. He said he has nothing to prove. All right i would think you do. But maybe he doesn't feel like that knows is going to be hall of famer man. He's made his money. I would think winning a championship. That'd be something to prove. Mclovin the criticism of that take us. He had he was with katie and he was with harder than any. Neither of those guys figured it out with him. So why is he gonna figure it out this time. Well four teams in four years that there's a reason for that. Does he make dizzy. he make everybody better. I think he's fascinating. He's a one man. Gang a one-man stat book and But i i don't think he makes others better. This is the challenge. That's what he has to prove. In my opinion prove that you can make others better. And not just at the benefit of your stats. This is about winning. This isn't about an average a triple double. This'll be about russ's playing every game in the regular season taken the workload off. Lebron hope it all comes down to anthony davis. That's it if ross and lebron play like we think they will and anthony davis healthy. Then they're going to play for a championship. It's that simple. You got role players. You're going to need them at some point during the season postseason but if those three if they're healthy and they play and they play at the level we expect then they're gonna play for championship but if eighty is not penciled into play sixty five games here seventy games or. He's you know limping going into the playoffs. Then there's a real concern. Obviously that's all it comes down to westward played oklahoma city houston washington d. Do you think he. I know he knows the league. He's played l. a. Grew up in. La do you think he is knows what he's in for the day to day coverage lakers locally and nationally the judgment from night to night quarter to quarter. That's about to happen to him that he hasn't had in his career. He doesn't strike me as somebody who cares. Or he's really good with he's got a bunch of dudes on the team now to take some of that heat off to. Yeah but the focus is going to be on him. It's not going to be on malik. Monk or kent bays more you know. These are the new players on. There's going to be i rus. Let's see what you got here. You know i was thinking more like Lebron and eighty and carmelo anthony. I don't know if they're gonna take heat because the laker fans. The media's already focused on the brand. They've already focused on a d. They got a title. It'll be russell westbrook's like okay. Mc what you got. What do you add this team here. It's fighting guys like me. Do like to pick on westbrook like the analytics like for some reason. Like obviously o'brien will get a ton of attaching but yeah we have our out for westbrook. It's bizarre you know. He's a great player. Well he's the walking triple double he won. Mvp because he averaged a triple double. That's it i mean it was just. Hey there's here's the story line. This hasn't has happened since oscar. Okay if somebody averages eleven points tennessee's twelve rebounds. May i ever triple double brussels fascinating. I just want to see if he makes the team. Better final hour coming up more phone calls of course alive versus romo. That's what you thought we'd be talking about today right one more item. Second hour em drive. How does he do it. I don't know if you're saying that consciously or subconsciously. How does that guy. That old guy have all that energy every single morning. Yep that's me em drive. The everyday supplement for driven guys like me who want to maintain their edge in compete. Like they did when they were younger. I got guys. I'm competing with or half the age i am. "You. Paulie yes mclovin. Who's better eli manning or phil simms like who's got a stronger legacy Ally it's really. You always hate to second super bowl. Sims did not yes yes if he beats the bills the high powered buffalo bills offense then he would be. He'd i in my opinion being super bowls in the media. They always they. They tend to fawn over athletes. Who are in the media. I think phil simms would be in the hall of fame. I think it's that close. For phil simms let's see codeine ohio. Hi cody what's on your mind today. Hey dan Bengals came out with new jersey's and i just wanted to know what single you would invest a future than and also Do you remember a charlie bomb and that played for cleansing. That around the late seventies with woody hayes the Woody punched him on the sidelines In a bowl game hosting. I work For charlie in westchester. Oh nice okay. We'll tell Tell charlie we set alone. I hope he's doing okay. I think his number was fifty eight. Yeah but he was a nose tackle but he had linebacker number. Think yeah i just remember. I think he had an interception ran to the sidelines. Got tackled and then woody. Hayes punched him the ohio state head. Coach charlie charlie balanced. If i'm investing in anybody with the bengals i would say. Joe borough i guess. Here's the playoffs ally. Eight and four eighteen touchdowns nine interceptions quarterback rating eighty seven point. Four romo two and four touchdowns two picks quarterback rating ninety three point. Oh but when you think romo don't you think of the seattle game with the he's holding on the field goal and The the snap his botched and then he runs and he thinks he's getting into the end zone get stopped short. I don't remember much about romo in the playoffs. A certainly do with eli mclovin or the dez bryant catch don on catch doing. Don't get me started on that. It's a catch. I think though romo if even had one super bowl appearance or a little bit more success or lasted two or three years longer. He gets in because he had a likable story. He came from nowhere eastern illinois. He was came remember that when they brought him in he. He sat on the bench until he's twenty six. Whose third third-string on the cowboys bench. He had a good story and he retired. Just touch early. We had the back injury and You know because of that you. I mean dak wouldn't have played. Tony was still going to be able to play and They just signed him. I think to a long term contract and suffered a back injury and then dak prescott got a chance behind a team. That was a playoff caliber team. Eight seven seven three. Dp show email address dp. Dan patrick dot com. Marco arizona's back. Hey marco what's on your mind. Good morning dan. Patrick show damnation On tony romo. i agree. He does not belong in their a longtime jerry. Jones hostage dan and Yeah you're right paulie. His his career is pretty fascinating. He was he was picked up because he was carson palmer throwing warm up partner at the combine and he was noticed by none other than sean payton and the rest is history but yeah he was a cinderella story. That never you never Never won the the chance to progress into the playoffs. Like like guys always mentioned. Just it's gonna keep merrill. Yeah i think so too but somebody brought it up. One of our listeners brought up romo was a hall of famer. The answer is no i mean. If he's going into the hall of fame. It'll be as a broadcaster but not as a quarterback arnold in pennsylvania. Hey arnold what's on your mind. Good morning dan. four two o. Nine i wanted to weigh in as as a giants fan. I think it's a no brainer. I loved the discussion and the comparison between romo consistently being bridesmaid with the cowboys. And eli peaking in two thousand seven and twenty eleven as a giants fan. The most popular professional sport by far being the nfl. I could put up with the subpar years with having to super bowl titles and the twenty first century. I think most giants fans would agree with me. Oh i think and so we'd cowboy fans it's like. Hey you know we can have a steady run here. Thanks for the phone. Call arnold but you know. It's like the florida marlins. They won a couple world series. Titles but it was like five years and then they would rebuild dismantle rebuild and then five years later they'd win another world series. Would you take that. Would you take the losing for years where you're not relevant if it meant and maybe not every five years but let's say every seven years. Your team is playing for a championship but in those other years. You're not you're not even close. Here's something for you. How many quarterbacks in the history of the nfl had the following. They've thrown for at least thirty four thousand career yards more than two hundred and fifty passing touchdowns and less than one hundred and twenty interceptions. So thirty four thousand career yards. They have two hundred forty passing touchdowns at least and less than one hundred and twenty interceptions. There's only two one is aaron rodgers and the other is tony romo stat of the day of the day by day stat of the day here comes that what status aaron rodgers can probably name everyone of his interceptions. Be curious if somebody asking that do know who has intercepted you i. He's thrown eighty nine phil rivers named kids. Yeah well rogers might be able to name. Viz interceptions over rivers with his kids. Rogers says thrown fifty one thousand yards four hundred and twelve touchdowns eighty nine interceptions. Now that's crazy when you're you're looking at a what a five to one over four to one ratio here for touchdowns interceptions although i did hear this criticism a couple years ago by an nfl scout. Yes but you know he throws so he doesn't have interceptions. He'll he'll throw a ball. I'm like other quarterbacks. Do this yeah. He's trying to protect his stats house. He protecting his stats. He's thrown four hundred touchdowns in eighty nine interceptions. Shouldn't all these quarterbacks aspire to do that like hey let me throw this one away. Tony romo has seasons where he threw for almost five thousand yards just good and they went eight. It's year that he threw for forty two hundred yards. They went eight eight Apple here's one other than eli manning's to super bowl runs. He never won another playoff game. He hit the giants never advanced past the first on the plan. All of those other years no for no. that's it. we had two great runs. Would you take that sir from your quarterback but that's so that's how many years well he lost his job to kurt warner. Kurt warner lost his job to eli. He led the giants to the playoffs. Six total times and they lost in the first every other one except for the two super bowl. Yes mclovin. didn't ben mcadoo eventually bench. Eli i wanna say. Gina smith is that possible. Yes that's gotta be. The worst decision in the history of coaching got fired like three weeks later. I can like. You're gonna put in gino smith like how out of touch are you realize last year's swansong leave him out there who cares right. We'll take a break. We'll hear from russell westbrook junior the third after this. Thanks for listening to the dan. Patrick show podcast sure to catch us live every weekday morning nine until noon eastern six to nine pacific on fox sports radio and you can find us on the iheartradio.

"Appearance. Yeah i think you can Appearance would be tough without an appearance. Because i'm thinking marino at least made it to the super bowl but everybody watched marina instead. Okay this is the best back the league for a big chunk of his career. So i mean technically you can. But it's gonna be. It's gonna be really difficult. Because the best quarterbacks usually at least vega to a super bowl and usually at least win at least one of them we reached out to you with the best and worst backup quarterback situations here given the news with the colts. now it looks like carson wentz is on course to start week one for the colts against the seahawks if that changes your backup quarterback situation or not there but let's start with good backup quarterback situations right now look at teams that have guys that i would consider you know low end starters that are sitting there as backup. So so the raiders. Have marcus mariota marcus. Mariota he's he's not great. He didn't become that franchise back that everybody may be was hoping but are what is the best backdrop in the nfl right now. We might not see a massive drop off. Earnhardt got hurt. I think case keenum with the browns a guy that could come in if baker mayfield got hurt to come in. Run that offense especially with the way kevin stefanski calls plays and and you have to highlight thomas down in new orleans right. Whoever loses in the taste hill jameis winston battle there. The other guy becomes one of the better backups in the entire league so i think the saints might not know who their starter is. But they'll at least know that they've got wait a minute. Wait so they have to. High end. Backups but low end starters. That's right okay. The question was say so the state's win in that game. How about our faith. James to be a pretty good starter still if i give you carson wentz or you can have famous together. Who would you take. Oh man. I would probably lead carson wentz and that's because i do think he'll bounce back from from last year's disaster but But thomas is interesting. You run you run the ball with with tesa mid. I'd have a ton of faith and james but he needs better playmakers than what. They have down in new orleans dolphins which you kobe percent. Yeah so i look at it again. A guy that chris ballard was essentially in indianapolis dealing with percents. He was kind of forced into the starting lineup twice in his career. I don't think jacoby percents guy you want as a starter but if you need to win four or five games i think percents a good solid option so miami. You could be good. There were sent as their backup. The backup quarterback situation. So i'm gonna start with the teams that have two of the elite quarterback got patrick mahomes in kansas city and russell wilson seattle. So if chad henny had to take the city he did that in the playoffs last year had a couple of good throws but some disastrous almost threw the game away. I don't have a ton of faith. And chatty take it over and kansas city and then gino smith right now the top backup and seattle. I think that that offense completely changes if it goes from. Ross gino smith. I also think the ravens a massive question. Mark trace mcsorley tyler. Huntley as the backups bolt shown flashes. But again i think the drop off from lamar jackson to whoever the ravens would try out there likely mcsorley would would be tough for the ravens. What do you think about the cowboys situation as garrett gilbert right now the top backup we just saw. The hall of fame. Game wasn't Wasn't the prettiest thing the other night. Whether whether it's dr dilbert or bendon uchi soap. Gilbert again had some flashes against the steelers a couple of years ago against their really good defense. But yeah the drop-off It'll be steeper than what they had last year. Andy dalton is one of the better backups in the league if justin field stakes over you have the cowboys having just garrett dilbert right. Now it'd be a big question mark. I can't understand what the jets are doing. And i granted i've said that quite a few times in my career. But you have james morgan and mike white behind a rookie quarterback. This is crying out for a nick. Foles or an andy dalton where you have that experience person a case keenum somebody who has experienced who's non-threatening to that quarterback who can help them with the nuance of of playing that position. Yeah i completely agree i. i think. The jets have made a lot of really smart moves but the quarterback room is definitely a questionable one. Maybe they just grabbed josh. Mccown back from From television right. Just bring him back. It's as the as that guy that's in the qb room all the time. But i i think it's a really good point you know. Zach wilson needs to learn James morgan's never taken a snap. Mike white hasn't played well and his preseason action so jetro making a lotta smart moves but could definitely use a veteran backup there. I'm gonna throw out some numbers here with roman. Eli losing seasons as a starter. Romo zero ally five seasons throwing more than fifteen interceptions romo to ally eight career. Completion percentage romo sixty five percent. Eli sixty percent. Roma was better quarterbacks. You know so. The tricky part here in i think a healthy internal debate. If you were running an nfl team would be. Would you actually want the giants run. Would you actually take that or would you want the cowboys fraud. Would you want a quarterback who is a volatile in. I use volatile in terms of you could be great or he could be terrible. That was eli right. Volatility but the sheets are so good. Two thousand eleven. Eli was so good that they want us super bowl and he carried them. It wasn't like oh seven. He carried them in two thousand eleven G want those peaks. You want those two super bowls but a bunch of years where you don't make the playoffs or do you want to you know. Get it on the green every single year. Like the cowboys did with tony. Romo and just kind of see what happens. I think it's it's an honest question. That doesn't have a great answer. And i think depending on your perspective like yeah give me the two championships like you. I brought us versus. Give the consistency that romo broadest but we never got to the championship games. I think it's an honest in fair question. But yeah romo throw throw again was definitely a better quarterback in eli manning. Good to talk to you again. Steve thanks for joining us. As always you. Gotta thanks to steve palo solo pro football focus senior analyst host of pro football focus. Nfl podcast. we should compare their playoff stats. Romo eli manning fun to look to. Okay yeah those two super bowls and you beat the patriots. You beat the patriots when the patriots were undefeated. You beat tom brady bell. Chac you know that goes a long way damn mclovin for some reason. Tony romo stats. Feel a little like empty calories to me. Because i don't. I'd have to get a bit like that was a big offense. Had a lack of on we're allies. Giant words was a much smaller offense where he was asked to do as much no and he had a great defense i mean they. They won the pressure they put on. Brady that's why they won. The super bowl ally had a couple of throws. And that's all you needed. But without that defense he has to make more throws. Because he's gonna be behind by a couple of touchdowns they kept it close and eli made a couple of very very good. Throws he's going into the hall of fame mclovin his last name. Well i i think it helps but then did we expect more out of eli. I remember when he like came in. And i was told by scout. He's got more talent than payton does whether that was true or not. But i you know winning a super bowl beating the patriots doesn't matter what your last name is though he did throw for. What three hundred touchdowns he did. Throw a lot of interceptions. I just never thought that he was great. I thought that he was opportunistic. He he was always a b. Plus would-be p minus. Never felt like when you said boy that that's an elite. You can't spell elite without e. l. i of course. But thank.

Terrel owens had this to say on the odd couple and fox sports radio tony romo you obliglated. You enjoy your time playing with him. But he's up for the hall of fame next year. Robin i give him props. He was very good but we don't think he's a hall of famer. Where are you at romo for the hall. Now probably would. I would probably agree. I mean i mean. I'm just i'm gonna give it to you real. I mean not just because he's my teammates. You're going to assess his body of work. Yup you're sense it and really evaluate really the class He's going in with versus some of the quarterbacks that are on the list or eligible to get in at the same time so obviously had a stellar career there in dallas but is it worthy all of fame did. That's not for me to decide. Obviously he was very very popular with the media there. We know you know how i am. And and my thought process on you know The process in which you know guys are being nominated who does and does the nominating. And that's ness mostly sports writers and so you know ahve them sure he had a better report with the media than ideas folk that may factor into him making it or not. It's tarallo and so. I think answering the question i think he said no. But likability does play a role there but that's courtesy of the odd couple and fox. Sports radio steve powell zillow pro football focus senior analyst. Who joins us. Do you think tony romo has any chance to get all of fame induction. I think there's a chance. I would probably lean no though i roam probably lands in the proverbial hall of the very good and i do think because post-season moments do matter so much the fact that allies even being considered. I think that's gonna end up working against romo because he just doesn't have it. Who do you think was a better quarterback. Eli roma. i mean. I think throw throw romo was a better quarterback. I i do think that the post season moments do matter and they certainly will matter. What the voters but throw for. Throw if you're just evaluating how well they played romo think was better from from start to finish more you. I had some high peaks though that were really really good including the super bowl runs but to we over state. Overestimate playoff success like that. That seems to be that that can decide whether you're in or not but you know. Do we not give as much importance to the regular season with some of these quarterbacks. Yeah i mean. I think i think the postseason stuff does matter though. I mean we're talking about the most important position at sports. And even everything we do. Pf is quantifying and all that stuff and even all acknowledged. there's something. There's something alice when it comes to the postseason. There's something else that like separates. Tom brady and separates guys that do execute the way they do in the postseason. So maybe we overrated a little bit but That's why we weren't philip rivers. Tony romo and those guys are going to end up. Probably losing out a little bit. So you don't think philip rivers will go into the hall of fame. The more i thought about it. I was thinking no i. I really think. I've got this top five in my head right. Top five of your era and if you're in that top four five at feels like you should. Handle it teepee show mclovin poll question from the first hour and the results. Do you want the nfl to enforce taunting more strictly sixty percent. Say no yes. It's coming back whether you asked for it or not and be. Nfl wants to enforce this. They've been a little lax on this in previous years. And i'm not sure what the point of emphasis is going to be. I don't think they're gonna be narrowing this down to touchdown celebrations. It's just. I think what happened in the super bowl. There were a couple of moments in the super bowl including one with tom. Brady that the nfl probably didn't like playing out on worldwide tv. I loved it because it was passionate. It was in the moment. It was real. And that's what we love like reality shows aren't real sports is real it's happening it's not scripted hard knocks last night part of that scripted. What happened in a football game. The super bowl the quarterback and defensive back going at it. That's that's what we love. It's real and it's rare to find out yeah mclovin. There's one kind of celebrating. I have a problem with when you're losing by twenty five points and you get a first down and you do the aero or if your quarterback who's like yes. I stop this past when you've been burned three times. Yeah you should get a flag for that win. A franchise has a young unproven quarterback. They can take one of two approaches either. Go all in make it known that you're going with the guy no matter what like the bengals did with joe borough or you can bring in the experience backup who can step up if the team struggles and right now. It appears the jets. Don't have a safety. Net present wilson. The eagles. i guess are competent in jalen hurts at least for now. The jags of course are building everything around trevor lawrence. But they have gardner men's shoe like they have a legitimate backup quarterback there the jets don't but the thinking is these guys gotta learn at some point. What's the point of bringing in. Nick foles or ryan fitzpatrick in going five hundred and it's a little bit of a scary proposition because i'll go back to. There are a couple of really talented quarterbacks. You know tim couch was the number one. Pick out of kentucky went to the browns. But you get in there and then you start to build up bad habits or you start to see what it feels like. Fourteen defensive players on the field. You're not a good player. You're not gaining competence. Derek carr brother david carr. He's athletic as i've ever seen but look at what happened. When he was with the texans he got sacked more often than any quarterback in history given the number of games that he played sam darnold. I don't know how good he is because it was hard to tell when he was with the jets. But the quarterbacks are going to struggle we know that the question is at what point do they learn the game. Does it slowdown for them. Those are the things that i'm always watching for. You know. it happened josh allen in buffalo. It'll look like and he would probably say this. The game was moving twice as fast as it did in college. And then after a while you sort of know where that person's going to be you know with that rush feels like you know how long you have to get that ball out the window of opportunity there. These are all things that you have to learn what you step onto the field and we've seen this down through history where it used to be if you were drafted high draft. Pick at that position. You sat steve mcnair famously sat for three years when he was drafted and then when he had his chance to play. He was a very good quarterback. But you know. Look at aaron rodgers three years philip rivers like these guys would sit. Because that's how you learned back then now it feels like given what you're running in college the. Nfl was borrowing from colleges as far as what they do with their schemes their formations these players. They've been running a pro system since they were in high school. They're ready to go. They know what it is being in a shotgun you know. The interesting part is a lot of them are not good under center because they didn't need to be under center urine shotgun for everything you know. Patrick mahomes sat for a year. You have these certain situations. Izak wilson going to struggle. Yes he's going to struggle and he's going to struggle because he's with a team. That's not very good and being a rookie quarterback when trae lance kitchen there probably struggle but he's on a better team he has a chance they can. They can kind of smooth smooth over his rough edges. There i mean dak. Prescott came in and the best line in football. You had a really good running back. Give you fifteen hundred yards. You had an owner. Who was offense minded offensive driven in dacca. Looked a lot better than he probably was. Russell wilson went into seattle. Had a good offense not great and they didn't need to score a lot of points because you had the best defense in football so you can look at the success of a quarterback. And i brought this up before and it's not a knock on patrick mahomes. It's just. We tend to look at quarterbacks and say boy that guy's not any good what is the situation. How many offensive coordinators have you had..

"Has to be the tampa bay box right. I mean this is ridiculous. With mike evans chris godwin antonio brown that trio even antonio brown at this point in his career. We saw what he did I love scotty miller. Even though he has a very specific role. Just run deep. Scotty go run for two down the field. Tommy hit some down the field all the time. And then that the tight end rob gronkowski. Oj howard coming back. Injury cameron breaks. There's nothing in the league like it and we saw last year even when guys got hurt. Oj howard got hurt. Antonio brown mr playoff game mike evans. This time they had enough daf to to make up for it and again. That is how you went in today's. Nfl you stretch the field with guys who are difficult to cover if your defense. How do you handle all of those players. How do you handle and cover all of those receivers and tight ends. It's it's really difficult to the bucks offense or defense ranked higher around the league. I'd say definitely the offense. I thought the defense was good last year again. Let's not let's not completely overrate that one performance in the super bowl. They were awesome in the super bowl. They had other performances like that last year but they were good. Knock great offense tampa bay though especially after the by last week they were great events potential great once again the bottom two receiving course in the nfl so the detroit lions have to be down there because we just you know they. They've they've overhauled. Everything tyrel williams looks like they're number. One is a good player but know he's he's a two or three type of receiver and then the houston. Texans especially brand cooks broom words. Maybe be on the trading block. He's they're only legitimate threat so they have a whole bunch of solid threats but texans lions. They're not scaring anybody with their receivers tight ends at this point. Would you advise the texans to trade deshaun watson. i think at this point they they might have to. I wouldn't advise it. I mean. I don't know what's happening off-the-field obviously and i don't even know what's happening with their relationship. If they could men's the relationship i would keep the shawn watson. He's a as a player. A top five top three asset in the nfl right now as far as what. He's going to bring from value standpoint on the field. I'm so if you can keep him around. I think that's the best option. If not better get three four five first rounders forums because your your whole team is starting to get overhauled. Which already looks like it's happening in houston anyway. If you were gonna make the call for the new orleans saints quarterback position jameis winston tatum hill with if micheal. Thomas is healthy. When he's on the field. I would always lean janus. I'm james guy. I think he's got some volatility to his game that you can harness and you can move the ball and you just have to deal with some turnovers and all that stuff. I'm scared i mean you who were the worst receiving if i take michael thomas out of the equation the saints with the worst there now. Thirty two of michael thomas's hurts for an extended period of time. And because of that i might lean taste of hill. I might say you know what we're gonna run the ball a time Tastes hills going to be a run threat. He's going to carry the ball ten to twelve times a game. That might be the only way the saints to win. Because it's marquis calloway..

"Because he does it all well route running. The most important thing that receiver can do is get open right. Pretty simple stuff but it's fun digs is one of the best in the league and doing that all right number three on your list. So it's the kansas city chiefs and this is where maybe the depth hurt them. Just a little bit because nobody to tyreek hill and travis chelsea those guys there. I don't wanna say they're uncomfortable. We just saw them get pretty well covered in the super bowl but they are the most dangerous combination tyreek hill. Legitimate deep fred if you just made him a slot receiver touch one. Hundred fifty passes an entire travis chelsea you know the best receiving tight end in the nfl. The big question is that number three spot. Who's the third receiver. You know sammy. watkins is out nicole. Hardman has done some nice things Drafted a couple players that receiver in tight end last year. So that's going to be the big thing for the chiefs as having that third option emerge and that's what really did hurt them in the super bowl not having a third receiver when the defense was just focused on tyreek hill and travels let also hurt. They didn't have a good offensive line in the super bowl. Also back to all right and that line is so much better way. Where does kansas city's line rank among other. Nfl teams right now going into camp. So they're in the top ten in our offense line rankings and let's not let's not have revisionist history gear. The two thousand twenty in city chiefs had a good offensive line. The two thousand twenty super bowl chiefs at a terrible offensive line because they all got hurt and they moved. Mike remers from right. Tackle to left tackle the chiefs of had a good offensive line in all three years. The patrick mahomes been starter. It just completely apart in that one game and they've done a really good job of adding depth. And and could starters in this offseason number two on your list of best receiving court some dealing with the dallas cowboys. Another team that The three deep at receivers just incredible amari cooper is a legitimate number one Excellent road runner gets open at the short intermediate level. Really well at cd. Lamb to the mix and then michael gallup. So michael gallup has been a really good number two during his time there. Cd lan has a chance to be another number one. So amari cooper is a one cd. Lamb is a one gallup is to. That trio is excellent. I think we're gonna see. Cd lamps stealing a whole bunch more targets this year and i really think the cowboys you know as far as that trio much like the bills is as good as it gets around the nfl. Where's the cowboys. Defense rank now. That is a tough question because last year they're horrible. It was a new system a new scheme. You could tell they were all over the place. busta coverages like crazy. Having dan quinn come in should handle some of that. you know. it's a simpler system. But there's no way you could say that they project to be a top half of the defense just because it just haven't done it the last couple of years so i'd say bottom half the league defense. Where maybe there's a little bit more stability with dan quinn. Coming in with a simpler steam based off lipid played with last year. So number one on your list. The team that has the best core of receivers.

Was you know it was fun. It was an an one mix tape but they weren't there together and when it came down to who's gonna take the last shot. Well there was nobody else to take. The lead sean. Kevin durant was exhausted. And i thought the last play that he shot which was an airball was poorly designed. But i don't think anybody's ever said kevin durant was selfish because he's not. "They made this offseason. Yes i mean. The texans are two years removed from being a playoff team. Last year they fall apart because the defense was horrible. And yes they should definitely there in full rebuild mode in houston and they signed about twenty you know mid tier type of free agents this offseason so it looks like a more of an expansion team in houston right now. Where do you label rank kirk cousins. I rang a lot of quarterbacks in that middle tier in. It's it's kinda like the old like number three starter in baseball guy that eats up a lot of innings and one year. He can win fifteen games and other. You can win ten. I think with cousins and a lot of the mid tier quarterbacks when you get that good droop receivers when you get that good offensive line. They'll produce an cousins is always had a nice group of receivers. he'll produce a top ten type a levels. Statistically but i don't think you're asking kirk cousins to carry your team like you are some of those top tier quarterbacks. So he's in that middle tier like i maybe ten to twelve fifteen other. Quarterbacks are being a former minor league pitcher. I'm curious what you think of spider tack and all of the substances. The how did you cheat is what i wanna know steve. When you're in the minor leagues did not cheap enough. Because i hate having any sticky substances on my fingers. I hated it. I didn't really. I thought it was just a little bit of help for grip. That guys used it for and then i didn't realize it was an increase in spin rates and all that stuff so i i consider it a missed opportunity. A good scuffed ball was nice though for me because it was good for my splitter you get a little crazy movement on that if you get a nice scuffed ball not that i ever did that incentive. Who's scarfs it. It's more of a lock thing. Like if i you know you throw a little sandpaper in there. But every now and again. The umpire keeps a scuffed ball. And there and you get it and use put it in the right spot to get that extra movement but a catcher can help you. Your third base. Go to help you right. Yeah you get some of that again. I never. I never intentionally did that. Which is why. I never made it. But if if you wanna scuff you just talk to the right people the statute of limitations is up steve. You're good like you know you can tell us how you were cheating. True true not enough again. Apparently i didn't man the spider tax stuff. I wanna go throw right now. I know i know a great to talk to you again. Thanks for joining us. We love the work that pro football focus. Thanks steve thank you. Dan powell paolo a former minor league pitcher and apparently an accidental cheater. Yes paulie isn't he likes 6-foot-9. Yeah and he was a pitcher. He's tall drink water. Yeah yes mclovin. In green bay. Aaron rodgers has the top rank wide receiver in the nfl. And the top rank left. Tackle david but i believe yes top. So that's why would you believe that you don't want to leave that. "It's bryce callahan. The it's anybody know bryce callahan here. The cornerback for the denver broncos looks early. Pf era we did this back in. We started this in two thousand eight and chris. Harris of the broncos was like the first guy where we kept grading him well rating him well and people started to catch on. Maybe this guy's pretty good. This bryce callahan could be that next guy. He is graded well with chicago. Bears with the denver broncos. He's done it in the slot is done it outside. He's only five nine one eight. He shouldn't be that good but we great production and he's just been really productive every time he's been on the field. I the one that stood out more than anything else is josh. Allen is forty on this list. And i don't think anybody was more valuable to their team last year than josh allen was what am i saying. He was fantastic last year again. I think you just have to take the entire body of work. So if you look at josh allen he was. He was average to below average. Is i two years last year. Was a legitimate breakout season. So the fact that he's even on the list after being below average quarterback probably the twenty eighth thirtieth best quarterback is first two years in the league. I mean i think that's just a testament to how much he's grown in. Short area intermediate area his accuracy decision. Makings gotten better. So look allen was fantastic. Last year. I just think it's let's see it for one more year. You know is you're gonna regress a little bit or is he. There is now fischel superstar. And if he is we'll be in that top ten to twenty range probably next year you got dak prescott fifty is that is that higher than you thought lower than you thought. Honestly i i think it was. It was close between dak between lamar jackson. If another quarterback didn't land on the list. I wouldn't have been all that upset. I think there's i think there's a cutoff between the mahomes. Brady's rodgers and russell wilson's of the world. And then again josh allen kind of in that gray area i think it is a big year for lamar. Maybe you know. Get back to that. Mvp caliber south. But with doc. I think what we've seen is. He's played when he's been on the field. The last two years the best football of his career trending in the right direction. I think we saw how valuable. He was for the cowboys last year after he went down so a lot of things for pointing toward him moving in the right direction to be that top. Seven or eight quarterback moving and this is based on a body of work. Yeah tell if it was just based off of last year how would how different would this list be. Yeah so we do a list at the end of the season. That is just looking back. It's like here's the top one a one. And it's just the two thousand and twenty season. Josh allen would be much higher attack obviously wouldn't be on the list. He only played the six game so Yeah it multiple year sample sizes do matter right in the way guys trending or But also not over weighing too much of one year. So i think there's a lotta guys on this list where it's like..

josh allen lamar jackson bryce callahan Josh allen Allen last year lamar next year forty six game Last year josh five russell wilson Seven Harris first two years one year first guy chicago

"What are the two worst words in sport. Yes thanh load management can all right all right. We'll get some phone calls if you can beat that the two worst words in sports if two best are gained seven and we have that tonight. What are the two worst words in sports pro. Football focus has put out. Its list of the top fifty players in the nfl. I'm going down the list a little bit here. And i agree with a lot of the names that are in here. I was surprised at a few names that were in here. Some a little too high some a little too low. I have a real problem with josh allen. Being be fortieth best. But i i wanna have some context here because we're all about context st palo pro football focus senior analyst host of pro football focus. The nfl podcast. Gimme context here. Steve of how you came up with the fifty best players in the nfl. Yeah the context behind it is essentially all positions are created equal. Just for this exercise. We're not worried about positional values. You know obviously if we were. It'd be all quarterbacks and that'd be it so that's the first step and then it's looking forward. It's looking to two thousand twenty one so it's taking not just last year but you know multiple years of information and then saying okay. Who are the best players going forward based off everything we know it again. Not worried too much about the quarterback being the most valuable player on the field. Okay what makes aaron donald number one on the list. He just we great every player on every play. Dan and he is just dominant from pass rushing standpoint from a run defense standpoint. And it's been like that for you know since he entered the league. He's been the highest rated interior defensive linemen every year since his rookie season. Any and he just does it all. And it's one of those things that shows up when he when he plays eight hundred nine hundred snaps. It shows up more in more than just sack. Totals and tackle. Numbers is the just the most unbreakable player that we've ever seen really in the pf era. Then you patrick mahomes to travis kelsey three quinton nelson four davante adams five khalil. Mack is six. tom. Brady seven. Bobby wagner eight. George kittle nine. Aaron rodgers tan. I can't put brady that high wagner like but you know like khalil mack. They're not playing in really meaningful games. Gimme gimme rationale. Yeah so with brady you know. He was our number. Two great at quarterback last year now is behind aaron rodgers but again retain body of work. So if you until brady really shows physical decline. He's our highest graded quarterback not only you know of the pf era but of the last four years of the last five years we gave brady the nod their okay with wagner it. It's really a tough time for the packers in the nfl offensive. Coordinators are just attacking linebackers that. They're spending right now. This entire offseason. Thinking of ways to bobby wagner and other linebackers lives miserable but wagner has been the clear top linebacker in the league since lewke retired at a guy like khalil. Mack is similar to aaron donald. It's just the down down consistency. The sack totals might fluctuate a little bit but as far as just winning one on ones and being a force in the run game. that's where khalil mack shines every year..

Aaron rodgers josh allen aaron rodgers Steve eight hundred Dan tonight aaron donald patrick mahomes last year quinton nelson khalil mack Bobby wagner eight two thousand first step tom khalil seven fifty best players

And that's the inside linebackers. But you guys and especially Steve at the end of this thing as he goes through and talks about the emergence of Alexander Johnson talks about how Todd Davis is one of most consistent linebackers in the league. Heck even had some nice thing to say about Josie Jule. At the end of this, Steve says. With Johnson's emergence and Davis's stability, the Broncos have one of the best linebacker units in the league. And like I said Broncos fans are like a lot of fan base is pretty high on almost every single player, every single position group. I'm sure you've heard heard it. But this is one position group where most Broncos fans have a little bit of a cringe. They don't they don't really Yes, I see the same thing to you agree with Steve's perspective on this. Well, you know, Steve has an interesting perspective first off because it comes from seven feet off the ground, and it's shrouded. Interestingly, Capt. Jerry Curl but s. Oh, my perspective is certainly different. But I don't disagree with him flat out. The reason for that is that I think sometimes we book at We look at the depth, and we overestimate how much that really matters and linebacker is a position where, OK, take out the Seattle Seahawks, who Just can't avoid keeping three of them on the field. At all times. You're seeing fewer and fewer linebacker's on the field. So when you look at this position group and you say, I really feel Rate about Alexander Johnson and we've talked about him. You know, many, many times when he didn't coverage And if you feel confident that he can cover that means a lot because you're not going to truck three guys out there that much. And when you do you know it's a big run. You know you're there to stop the run. And Josie Jule great. Well against the run, So, Yeah, I wouldn't be trotting them out there a lot because You know, If I sergeant, you'll come out on the field and I am a quarterback that has at least half of rain. I'm probably probably making a little switch. There will be attacking that, but but you know those air. Those are things that you could take advantage of it, and I think that's the point. That he's making work. Todd Davis is Is not. He's not going to be a sudden, but he at least isn't going to be a disaster. By any stretch. You know, he'll be a little baby kind of a consistent piece, and you're going to play two linebackers lot. You're going, You're going to play on my back. So that's why I think maybe there's more of a rose colored look from from the big guy, Steve pals all but I wouldn't I would not. I would not. I would not go Hey top linebacker unit Denver off to talk my head. That's not I'm not going back for no, and I don't think most Broncos fans are either And like I said, it's an interesting conversation. And maybe we'll do a little bit more of that when we get you on next week. Hey, George. Thanks for the time man really do appreciate it. I have great news for you. The Kansas City Chiefs won the Super Bowl, go check their linebackers. It hurts. Speaking of linebackers, though, programming know if you guys want to stick around for Broncos Country TV this week, we're going to have Alexander Johnson on with us. There you go. All right. Good stuff, George. We appreciate you. Any time you well, guys talk. Thank you, George. Hurry from pro football. Focus at Pff Underscore George, When we come back, we get to our bonus hours..

"He's coming off a career year with the Ravens. He's just a solid player, especially run throated career. And then David. There could be a little bit more of a hybrid type players use them certainly and blitz packages. You know, he rushed the passer, a lot of Appalachian state, so I like the flexibility that they've added And it also takes a little pressure on state. Jordan Nevins remain proud. Let those guys developed a little bit more. Yeah, Yeah. You know what they've also done, I think is the only place you could go is up. I mean, with the defense they have had the last couple of seasons. But I think what they've also done is try and get by yet again with this offensive line. I mean, I'm looking at Williams. I'm glad he's back. I hope he's healthy. I hope he can go in there and play left tackle. But I I still think they're kidding themselves at right tackle, and I'm not sure how good those interior guys are it. It doesn't seem like other than Williams coming back healthy that that that's really been upgraded it all this year. One of my missing if anything, No, This is definitely my biggest concern. When we put our offensive line rankings together, it was. You know the dolphins for work. I think single for 30th the 31st you know, it was hard to put them above. Any other team, And this is projecting Jonah Williams to be. You know that top 10 caliber offensive tackle that we thought he was coming out in 2019. We haven't actually seen him play football. Presumably, though that would be an upgraded left tackle. But still major question Mark whether it's Michael Jordan, Billy Price Xavier to a pillow with whichever two out of those three that end up playing guard. Hopkins was no better at Centre than Price was. But Philip below average player and Bobby Hart has certainly had his struggles at right tackle. Even with Flight stepped forward last year. So yeah, I think there's there's major question mark there and I always use the term. You gotta creep back toward average on the offensive line. You at least need a mediocre line that is not going to put your quarterback under pressure 40 plus percent of the time. Andi. I think the Bangles certainly still have some work to do there. Get back like the middle here. You don't have to be dominant. You just need to be not a disaster, especially when it comes to have perfected Steve Palazzolo Bangles believer with us here on 700 wlw. Everybody's in the same boat with the season and how it will open or when it will open or how many exhibition games they are or how many There will not be. But I'm just wondering for a team that's young. And a team that has a lot of new players and a team that is going into only its second season with a head coach and his coaching staff. Are the Bangles Mohr behind the Eightball because of what's going on here with covert, or is that not that big a deal in your opinion? Yeah, I think your point, everything kind of in the same boat. But the veteran teams will certainly have a bigger advantage. If you look at it seemed like the New Orleans Saints. You know, pretty much running the fact with all the things through, you know, there will be enough. A much better spot veteran quarterback who have been in the same system. I do think you might be overall, just ugly football early on, assuming we have limited off season and we we start on time so it could get ugly. And it also would take some of the younger teams like the Bangles, maybe a little bit longer to get going because those rats are crucial, and you might see one of those seasons where you know 78 or nine Things look a little bit different, and things turned around on. That wouldn't be the worst thing for Bengal fans, You know, have a little second half hope. You know, No one in 2021 sure. Can you put a percentage on whether or not you think we're going tohave an NFL season that is uninterrupted. Now I have no idea. I can't. I have a lot of hope have confidence And then I got. I have left hope that they're still debating stuff that could have been debated throughout the summer between the NFL in the NFL, So I think there could be some Come on, pick up, but I I am fairly confident that they're going to do everything they can to play every last game because you know there's a lot of money on the table, so I hope you find a way to make that happen. He writes the Cincinnati Bengals. Making the playoffs is the best long shot bet on the board. Pro football focus simulation probability almost 10% higher than the current employed betting market probability. We hope there that for There is an NFL season here in 2020 Steve Good stuff. Thanks for joining us, and hopefully we're talking about games and outcomes here very soon. Yeah, I certainly hope so. Appreciate you having me Only thing I worry about is the offensive line and I know that's trite to say, because that's what everybody is saying, but I think Jonah Williams. Coming back Healthy is a huge plus. But It's still the same cast of characters after him now. Xavier Su'a. Filo. OK, maybe we'll see. I don't know. The great outs on him was weren't all that great. He did have AH, decent grade. Last year wasn't great. But we'll find out we'll find out starting Tuesday when the rookies report and then a week from Tuesday when the entire team is in camp still don't know how many preseason games will be played. They're still ongoing Negotiation between the National Football League Players Association and the owners. Players don't.
