Magic Spoon, A Healthy Breakfast Cereal

"Gary Welcome to the show. Hi, thanks for having me. Well, can you describe to our listeners what magic spoon radius of course magic spoon is a breakfast cereal company that I launched in April of two thousand nineteen. So just over a year ago and we are recreating all of your favorite shout who'd sugary cereals but without the sugar essentially. So imagine whatever your favorite junk cereal was an I imagine it worth more protein and less carbs zero sugar actually legitimately healthy for you. But with the and texture of all those sugary cereals, we we all loved growing up, right? Yeah. I had to look actually at the nutritional labels off both magic spoon and then fruit loops. A popular child with choice of of many, and I can see both serving of about one, hundred, ten, two, hundred, eighteen categories, but magic spoons. Macro makeup is completely different I'm seeing that it's fruit loops gets like eighty five percent of their calories from cops out of which about half come from Shoka match gets nearly eighty percent of its calories from fat and protein. How do you achieve that? Correct? So we've basically got a similar Carolina recount. We've swapped the protein and carbs around and we did riot by basing our SERIO ON A. Blend of protein slits, we primarily use a milk pudding ice lit as well as a way protein concentrates and use that instead of the wheat flour or corn flour rice lower than most classic serials, and then rather than sweetening with thigh high fructose, Corn Syrup, or perhaps akin sugar we use a blend of natural sweeteners that are essentially zero calories. So specifically use Stevia and monk route and three those in a specific combination allows us to get as close as possible to that sweet tasted sugary cereals without actually putting sugar into the products. I am because I was curious because I'm certain food scientists and then I saw you know like you have a blend of fruits, Steve Young at Lowe's and the nets reason to really achieve that that flavor or is it something else as well? So that's the sweetness the flavor itself. Ingram comes from natural flavors. Basically Ryan's depending on ever. We have a obliterate flavor, for example, some of us. Are Real Blueberry powder in that Labor, and then will actually get the colors from fruit and vegetable juices used in very small quantities. So not really adding any sugar but are You know some of our flavors resemble US beet juice, beet extracts read flavor fritzy cereal Spirulina to get a blue collar on our blueberry cereal. For example, the different gradients are different purposes but in general everything's entirely natural. Even. Though of course that doesn't mean very much nowadays but premium high-quality ingredients and high in protein sugar, a would not expect that actually when you look at like a package off fruit loops that they can be actual flavors in it. So it's it's quite impressive and you also have an oil plan with within magic spoon riot. Can you talk more about that direct? So he's a blend of. Highly Sunflower oil, and then avocado oil. Basically, you didn't oil to bind the colors in the flavorings to the base of the cereal and we wanted to, of course, was high quality. Fatty Acids rather than just like sure low-quality seed oils and so high elects unclear. Oil pretty different from regular Orlando it fatty acids and those are the same sort of saturated fats that you find extroversion. And of course, avocado oil very healthy as well. Got It and just going back to the sweeteners, and now that in recent years, the had been quite a few studies on a variety of different sweeteners and some of them half a good and some have a negative impact on one's microbiome worried as long fruit steve here on LAS, stand on that. Do you now that? Yeah, they're good impact which is why we chose them. So Chicago halls are generally very good. So bunch of using things like A. Recruits all tell which can have a negative impact on my own, but also caused just looting and general or stomach aches and a pretty large portion of the population. So we want to avoid sugar alcohols for that reason, which right meet means ingredients are more expensive. So obviously, stadium for are more expensive than a lot of the other sweeteners that might still be natural but he come with other issues, and so we wanted to avoid those issues, which is why you chose these three. Got It. So

"I'm sorry you're right so for your podcast guy and then these these ones where it's like you can see the spring on it and it's like just the fucking nasty is just mold the microphone to me the most garbage that you can do is just beholding to people. Sitting down holding microphones. The I wonder like a self satisfied. My did they got that covered the Fedex. I mean we can't we can't wait. Oh see white you have. I walk in here and do this guy. Like I've got him on speed. Dial the vice president of sales and marketing. Yeah for these Mike Arms. First thing I did was take pictures and text them to my my homeboy. How much longer do I have to hear about? I'm done no I. I'm glad that I'm watching this because I've been off. I've been on the bench for awhile dating and I know a lot of being in a relationship is how you you were recently. Engaged jobs engaged and and what happened there. I mean I just I. I still don't know how to articulate it talk about the Mike Arms. How this is just so bendy no. It's just it just. I still don't have a way to articulate it and I'm I'm part of my recovery is being able to say I don't know how I'll get. You know who knows? Maybe another person. Maybe I just need to live on your farm. But then we'll just chat to each other all day and don't you have a firm like as well as until I'm able to get a what you're going to get like a full far because if you have horses someone has to be around all the time they can call like like I mean. They're just very delicate and ambitious in the in the world of A and it's a wild amount of shed. I mean it's expensive but then sieve and I want to do that. I wanted to donkeys horses. I'm going to do the whole thing but I probably need a couple of years to get that. Get that land right at that Lance I love how unapologetically just animal loving you are. Is it crazy? Well do people think I'm crazy? I don't think so. I think that it's I think because the way you do it is not preachy. I could name some people who are just really tough to follow. Because it's like just stop you know like the whole militant Vegan thing I think is Is is is a little bit it to me. It makes the people that you actually could convince or that you could interest shuts them down and makes them not it stopped. I shut down when people yell at me. And it's it's there's there's a real feeling that if you're not vegan enough you know like where we start like actually alienating people who are on the same fucking team that's exactly so I I look and I don't post most of my animal rescue stuff because a lot of the reason. I'm able to get animals out of Abusive situations the agreement. I says I won't put this on social media. Your name will not be involved. Give me the tiger and the horse. Nothing else will be sad right. So that's a big part of it so most of it is anonymous so but I do try to post if I'm trying to get a dog a home or trying to just go. Hey we're in quarantine grey to foster dog you know like Never WANNA bully people but because I have so many animal people sort of in my world which great before. But I'll get messages were if I'm wearing a shirt people go. You're wearing a silk shirt and that's worm rape and I'm just like okay right you like I proud of myself or not even having noticed that you have animals on share because like I've just not not once have looked at your breast your to who doesn't you have blinders on in a way that I am not even a woman team. He has not even look below my neck. I mean granted this is probably just the Lee Sexual. This managed to neuter myself with his shirt. But I mean I'll be wearing something or if someone sees me eating honey they'll be like be rape right. I post videos like taking bees out of the pool like so much trouble. It was it was when I was in that same fucking theater in Vancouver and someone came through the line and they said hey like Like are you still Vegan or and I was like. Oh well you know like once when I got cats and then I was just like a gate you know and I I just you know became PESCA. -Tarian feel like you know like I gotta feed my cats. Well Yeah I gotta feed my cats me like my dogs like I. I just don't don't fucking DIG Vegan Dog Food. I it part of the reason. I don't eat red meat as I feed so much red meat to my dogs and so I try to just go like okay this like that. Yeah and also I like a fish. Yeah and I also like started chicken like we've been doing chicken I would. Also we tore lots. There's times where it's like and because I had such crazy eating disorders stuff if I'm in an airport and I the only choices like chicken soup or like diet coke like I Gotta. I gotta do that or else. I'm on the slippery slope of my diet. Just like if I'm you know the Tulsa airport and there's only a borrow pizza and Hudson News right like I can't just only drink for lunch because I'm like not eating chicken like that. Gets INTO A WHOLE OTHER UNHEALTHY? Sort of thing But but yet I also I also think people just need to be on their own and part of it too. I told this this girl that like you know I've ages line got blerim like I eat. Fish actually subscribed to the belief. That fish is good for me. Yeah certainly better than all the fucking like fake mock meat bullshit really not good for. Yeah and you know so like eggs and fish and then it was like and I didn't even think anything of it. Yeah she came back to the line again. Just talk to me again to say how she disapproves. Fish Fisher. You Know Cente- everyone whatever it was. Yeah and then the next day I got on the airplane and now I'm seeing things like on like the instrument whatever it was like. Oh he's not fucking anymore. He's fucking traders hypocrite. He's just like wait. What and then I and I was like foolishly. Responded so Yeah there was. There was like a direct messages at forget. But then now there's like a facebook forum like you know and it was just like and I just got so at my wit's end I'd finally was just like you know I just want. I posted of a picture old picture of me and crammed into a fridge. These fruits and veggies. You know and I was just like man my just like fuck. Vegans can be really annoying. Man You now like really annoying. I just wanted to say like like when people are on your. Let's let's not alienate people. Who are really proactive. About like furthering progress or animal welfare. You know when somebody isn't quite up to your personal standard of veganism free when when they're not like let's not attack the people who are really proactive. And benefiting say I think in anything extremism is where it should hits the fan so I'm sure there are cool. Republicans Cool Democrats. It's just the extreme will republicans. Look I know the fucking cool Republicans who are like you know very liberal in some areas and and I know some that go back and forth. The can't imagine being you know but I just think to me it's always like and I sometimes do. Come to the defense of the non vocal vegans or. Just do what you want man. I'm GONNA do like words and Neal Brennan like Barker. I Yeah Right. I've known them for ten years. We've had you know Neil and I dinner used up dinner once a week. Never once even talk you know right so it's like there are some cool ones we of course here from the didactic right right right nasty ones and and you're absolutely right. They're totally wonderful. Megan people and just do the best. You can extreme do you. Can you know I just? I had a pig and stumbled upon getting a pig. I didn't plan on getting a pig. Once you fucking have a pig and you see how smart they are. It's just like I just couldn't go back. You know what I mean. It was just one of those things with just pigs. It was just like Oh yeah dude like I mean so much smarter than my dogs. This is say you know what it was for me was when I was hearing all the voices on drugs like I was I was I needed to know more about what I had. This connection with the the barriers were eroded now I'm interacting with the spirit entities. And so I was. I was you know. Took to the Internet to research spirituality and learn what what's going on what am I privy to let me learn about what it is and I came upon this video of like a fucking Krishna Consciousness Guru in India and he just said one thing that caught me said. How can you expect to be saved if you eat meat like just seemed like you know and I think by any buddies standards whether it's like Go TO HEAVEN BE SAVED. Nirvana like whatever it is like. There's some kind of a consensus that human experience is is essentially. We're in a fucking jam and we're trying to get out. We want to ascend as we're in this fucking thing and it's like we need to be saved. We need to talk in here. We need to go to heaven. But whatever we're in we're in we're gonNA fucking jam and like the idea of this is to somehow like no matter what religion spiritual like you know. Wisdom is like our purposes to get out of this jam by finding salvation. And this guy who is like this spiritual. How can you expect to be saved and I thought Oh no? I'm not going to be saved because I'm fucking eating meat and I. I stopped eating meat except for fish at that time. Because all fucking Jesus like was fishermen man like eating fish to be cool. How long have you been going so long that I have to let you go good so long go but I love you and this is long overdue? But I'm glad we did it when you're pastas out. Oh Shit I never talked about it. We're talking about a little bit. Do Doctor Episode. Just listen to it was fucking great. The RONDA Rousey episode. I watched the entire thing in one sitting. It was just so fun to what you get people that are so like you have such chemistry with but you're in like different worlds as you know. I love having all the our friends on the COMEDIANS. We all get to see but it's just been really refreshing like how your curated guests. It's it's just such A. I'm just tormenting myself I gotta get someone that never gives them gonNA have like I. I've I've not had 'em comedian musician athlete. Yeah you're like you being a perfectionist about it. That's good that's great. That's something I don't think you should maybe fix about yourself wanting to be excellent. That's fucking awesome. I to be fucking I wanted to be. That's why you'RE GONNA FUCK IN. Be The king of this dirt right. Said I love you and give you a hug but get stuck away. All right love you. I always end this very awkwardly. NPR NPR to hear your local NPR station. And all your favorite NPR shows as well. Hey thanks for sticking around because it's time now for how you built that and today for checking back on a story that began about eight years ago in Columbia South Carolina. Gabby Goodwin was about five. At the time and every day she went through the same routine Mama would put pigtails in my hair in for every pigtailed. That was in my hair. There was plastic rats on every every single one of them and usually she had one of these plastic rats in ten of her pigtails. But a me when I was little I will be running around at school and Dan. My mom would pick me up and my hair will be a complete mess I would say. Don't Gary what happened to your bose like what were you doing that. Voice of course is Gaby's mom Rosalyn who started the really fed up that her daughters breads kept coming out of her hair and so one day Rosalyn actually went on twitter to complain about about it just to blow off some steam at didn't think anybody would respond. I got all twitter. Came back on probably in about an hour and had all these responses from MOMS who felt the same same way all these MOMS saying yes. Our daughter's ferrets are falling out too. And we're wasting tons of money. Replacing them Baraza wasn't necessarily looking to solve this problem. She was working fulltime as a healthcare lobbyist and she had no interest in starting a business but a couple of weeks later as I was styling. Alan Gabrielle's hair. I'm mumbled under my breath. Somebody needs to make a bow and she jumped out of the seat and said Mommy. Are we going to make a ball and so so every single day after that gabby would ask Roslyn. Wynonna bows coming when I both come. When are we GONNA make my bows out my comments so rosalind figured okay as since Gabby is so into it? Maybe we could just do this as a kind of science project work on a design for a bread and see if we can make just one just one bret so I they dreaded design with two faces so you could see a pretty decoration. No matter which way the borate was turned and each face. Ace has teeth and craters to trap and gather the hair. So you're basically creating this sandwiching mechanism to make sure the hair it doesn't slip out of the hair. It's Rosalyn looked at this design and she's thinking. Hey you know this isn't half bad. Maybe maybe we can make further type so she gets the number of a couple of engineers and she calls him up and you could just kind of hear them sigh like. Oh God they said Ma'am listen. You've got fifteen minutes so she goes to to meet with these guys in North Carolina. At first things do not go. Well the engineers are looking at this design a hair clip and they're just not getting it an asset. Well you know what. I'm going to run the car. Promise you there's a standard that has fallen off Gabrielle's hair and sure enough at dug in the back seat of my car har down to standards raw that back. In and at that point Roslyn used a mannequin to demonstrate how a standard bread could just fall out of your hair and how her and Gaby Design Works. A lot better and as soon as I did this. The Light Bulb went off. And he said Ma'am we think you're onto something so these two engineers agreed to help her. Make the prototype. They found a manufacturer in China. They made an initial run of five. Hundred Bows and in early twenty and fourteen Roslyn and Gabby put them up for sale on their website. We get our first sale. We're like this actually happening. Like Oh my God. We're in business. They they sold out of the first five hundred pretty quickly so Roslin and her husband to get a few loans to fulfil more orders and when we last checked in with Gabby the company had you just become profitable now. Her bows are in seventy four targets in twenty two states. Anybody could be as long as you have the courage to run a business. You can be four years old and have a business that's Gabrielle. "Do you think that like Tyra banks literally just one of those people in the industry that are like using these girls to make a check get exposure promising them like I'm gonna give you exposure. I'm in cloud. I'm going to do all this. But really at the end of the day, as we know in fashion exposure doesn't go anywhere. Just because you're on a billboard doesn't mean you have a checking your right? But you know, what I will say I feel like she didn't intend for the show to be like that to be like a thing that was didn't produce any real talent. I like they intended to find like actual model. She really they went in going to that. But like, you know, we sustain without that through six goals. And then the girls who've been on your show, really doing anything. You know, but the ratings are great people are still watching it you still at the producer show at the end of the day. That's interesting campus. Like, it's not like you're gonna be like, oh, I'd having producing how many total seasons were there for the sort of more nineteen. I don't. Yeah. Something like that. I think now they're on twenty one with the re. Yes. It was like, you know, so we're going to do. So would your advice to girls? I mean, hopefully, you girls on his podcast want to go on top model to become a model. I hope you are all more than this personally, Noah girl, like we both know going to say your name who was approached to do top model and really thinking about it. And she said to herself why ran top model fan, of course. But why the fuck buddy going top model the model down? For exposure heating, cheating, any she didn't go, and she's like walking fashion shows now know, No. and that's. And that's about it. So. Don't do things for exposure is like the end of the day. I don't know. Now, it's kind of different because there was one girl on one of the the later not one of the more recent seasons. Like, she got shot by lake Steve my Zell for Zara. But she still did it. And like I. I. Zara. It's like equivalent h number. Our campaign, but you also shot where like the master photographer, his master stylists and his master makeup artists. And there might have you mind for other things it's like, it's an opportunity to think people can see your talent. But she's gave this because she's doing a lot work off the show. I assume probably I don't know anything about that little girl. So I wanna give Lawson chance to like get in here because you love scamming, and you researched a moment of Tara banks scamming through a beauty company. I just like I actually remember hearing about this the Taira beauty remember this. It's basically like an Avon kind of. Yeah. I wanted to give you to talk about this because I asked you to look into it, and you gain. No, it's the guy. No. She literally did like what was it fab life? Like, no, no. It was after fab life yet tires during fat line. Yeah. Yeah. She had this like direct selling venture for a bunch of girls like your family level, Mark. No litter. Yeah. So literally. I think the coach here that killed me..

"And actually this story we tell in the book, and it's sorta that all to my friend, Steve my co author here was that we as we were helping think of through this challenge. We actually made a mistake ourselves in looking at past data as a way to project. What was going to happen in the future with them? We were able to work towards a better outcome and all the great growth for the company because we were able to catch ourselves before that became disastrous projection one of the one of the one of the things that they did was they they re they reimagined what a store met. So they had declared that they would have two thousand stores. By two thousand and if you looked at any conventional way to get there, the the market was just saturated. But would they they they re imagine what it was a store would look like, and they were the ones that came up with the the Donut store in the in the gas station concept in them and in different kiosks. And so it was just reimagining of what a store would be. You talk a little bit in the book about revenues, and obviously many companies are driven by their revenues. But but should they be the be all end all for a company, Steve? Well, I think the most important thing is that revenues are an outcome. Not an input, and what we talk about in the book is that when companies do their financial forecasting. They oftentimes treat revenue almost as if it's a given and then cost as an outcome rather than the opposite. And so they start by saying, well, how much is the market going to grow over the next five years, and what's our fair share of that. And then how much profit do we wanna make? And then they ask themselves. How much can we afford to speak? Tend to generate that revenue win, of course, the world works and literally the opposite way. And so what we're simply saying in the book is not that revenue isn't important or not to focus on it. But rather that it's an outcome of spending your cost spending on your costs in order to change customer behavior to drive revenue. And I think if companies understood that they have to literally start from zero every year and earn it. They would be less susceptible to disrupt forces, Jeff tough and Stephen goal back.
