"Welcome to another time with poop insightful, BS, with Laker team mates, Indian legends. Often times, it's just being myself and today, that's what you're going to get. But you're still going to get an earful because we always bring good eargasm to show time with Coupe. All right, how are you, sir? Great man. I love the way you say that. That's that's that's that's good and you got to hear from from some of our our fans of the show while you were out signing autographs. That's pretty cool too. You know, at the front part about this, our age that, you know, when we do this you're in your place I'm in mind. And whoever the guests that we bring on, we just talked and we we hope that people are listening but they are. I didn't know that I was in a signing in Chicago and Boston Celtics fan while he he was from LA, but he lives in Boston and he comes up to me. And he says, you know, her Coupe. I listen to you and your guy re and you guys are are sort of Fight Club. Cycle, and you're funny. And you guys tell the truth. And so he had me sign a picture for him and his son and then I stood up took a picture with him. He says, who do you think if I go get a basketball game that you could put fuk the Celtics on it? Now was a little shocked? I said, hell yeah, I'll go get the boss. Just saying, if blank blank K, and I thought you got what they're meant on that. And I mean, he loved it to the fact, but it was just an honor and real exciting to me that people do. Listen. This is kind of like underground radio. Don't you think I already oh yeah, absolutely. And I love, you know, even though you've had, you know, we've we've obviously had such a Maxwell on and you you know you've bared that too with some of these Lakers Lakers Celtics guys like that. I mean I can't say it enough man, that that rivalry defines NBA and you know, as much as you dealed, diminish it at times like or defer from it. I mean it is you think about how popular the NBA is and it is only on its way off. For more and more popularity. I mean, it goes back to you guys building the foundation of this thing. And that's, I'm starting to realize re I'm starting to realize, is that what we did back there? Yet, was a fleeting moment of greatness, but it has lasted and sustained has built this big snowball. If you want to say, use an analogy rolling downhill to his only getting bigger and better. And you know, some of these guys that you see him out there now. And then we'll talk about this big three in a minute, but some of the guys will talk basketball. Even those guys, you know, Mario Chalmers, Joe Johnson, you know, they still give us that respect cuz you've gotta figure. If some of the coaches are written, very often, George Gervin, Rick. Mahorn drjays Steve mixes, drjays assistant coach Gary, Payton. These are all the people that started the Blaze. The trail for these guys and found that, you know, it's nice to be recognized, but it's even more nice when the fans recognize it and, yeah, really pay homage to us in a sense of getting the NBA to where it is today on. It's funny because the guys years Mentioned way better NBA players historically than any of the guys, the basic, you know, mine. But so let's start this off. Let's talk every said about the big three mentioning those long as they're, you know, the big three is on the rise, man..

"Stephen king's papers aren't anywhere right now. I believe they are i he. There's various bits of stephen king juvenalia in theory that People have talked about being in the papers in. I think it's university of maine. Which is his alma mater. Gotcha i'd be very I'd be very interested to To know if their early drafts of this book there. I'd be very curious about what changed but but yeah that's the only connection i can think of just because you know these are the bachman books and that's how it works But strangely enough when we're talking about versions of manuscripts of the other thing that we do here is uncle. Steve's mix tape where we go through and we listened to the songs that have appeared in the novel and it just so happens That is far as i can tell. There's only one song mentioned in this book And there are two versions of it and the song that is mentioned could which version of the song is being referenced because Either one could happen so the song is bette. Davis is which is a its most famous recording is nineteen. Eighty one by kim kearns Are you familiar with the song cameron. No not at all not at all okay It's a pretty. I think well regarded song from that time period. It's not something. I don't know if kearns did much afterward. I haven't heard a lot about her. But i don't think this is quite got the reputation of like one hit wonder in the sense that it was overexposed. That's not the sense that i get people who remember it people. I know i'm always like the song. Bette davis eisner like yeah So nineteen eighty-one it's on the top of the charts and this book comes out in nineteen eighty two and it would make sense if this song were referenced in this book because the guy who makes fake. Id's like sings to himself while he's making fake id's and how Richards response to it. It's like a sort of indirect discourse thing where richards listened while What's his face like worked on the fake. Id's and sang himself some silly song about bette. Davis is so nineteen eighty-one maybe likely the most recent of a version of that. The one that probably stephen king is referencing cameron. I'm going to drop the link to this to you so you can listen to it and you might. You might recognize it. Because i want you to listen to it and have heard it and then go back and experience with me what the original recording sounds like. Because it's incredible so here's the time you've been talking. I've been listening to bette. Davis is.

"That when i was reading these as a teenager and trying to figure out if they were supposed to be like the same character but an alternate timelines and no they're not. I'm pretty sure. Stephen king just like you know stumbled upon this name liked it. Used it and then forgot that. He used it and used it again. Yup and stephen king of the powers where you're going to tell them you're gonna tell them no. I think not another thing i wrote on here. Is that john. Rainbird says the phrase. Bite my bag. Which famously shows up in other. Stephen king stuff yeah. I don't know if this is like something. That people said. When stephen king was but i don't know i don't know who who so i think it's You know you saw the most. Recent hit adaptation right. Yeah i think that a human being says bite my in that film. I think so probably i mean that's the that's the sort of thing that would be in the latest did at Can't wait till we get to that. But we're probably gonna watch the miniseries. Maybe it'll be a bonus bonus hour for us to Watch the to it films and go in on them because there's a lot to talk about yeah But the next thing we need to talk about is our final segment Uncle cv's mix tape now. This is the segment. Where because stephen king is a a known music lover cameron and i go through the novel that we've just read and we mark all of the songs that have been mentioned of either like sort of em- passing or like the songs that get quoted directly right that are on the radio or that character sing And usually there's some really great interesting stuff in there some conversations to the had I'm going to start. This is pretty long. Uncle steve. Mix tape. There's quite a few songs in this one So i'll start us off. Our first song on the playlist is happy. Birthday to you. This is a stone cold banger. It's understandable that this is a classic sung by children across the country. I mean start I would say four stars four stars too. Happy birthday to you. He s got a couple of good ones in here to this old man. You know the standby sung by again children across the nation from sesame street to another street somewhere across united states. "And that's i let my cop. Yeah you there there. Those i listen i i think that this through pretty good on the radio influence and listening to the job you do and but he has can and some of your speakers if i'm not listening to them i'm sitting down and doing a lot of thinking zacks in the fifteen hundred sleep day one five eighths of a mile. The other day worked real good second. I worked in a year and milton. The monster work like a champ. But if i'm even when. I'm on the sources backs sitting and thinking about what i'm gonna say on steve mix. Because that's i have for you. Of course i always agree with haskins because he acts like an talks as if he sat on horses backs so maybe he has a the jockey in another lifetime. I'm not sure what. I wanna came to On the jockey front. We just got a couple of minutes to close out. So we'll stay with it Know the really turned out that the that the interesting storylines came Found the writing side. Tony came from the these lesser known European riders this. Tom eaves and colin keen. And pierre budo these are not you know if you follow international you see them right But it was a ended up being a real showcase for them and That's fun that's one of the things that that You know that kind of adds to the appeal The the international quality when it comes to guys like dermot weld o'brien and even james fanshawe. Who won the etc Kevin ryan sometimes. You're you're finding out about people you know. But the riding the riders to me were as entertaining Sata story lines. This weekend is You know as as we had absolutely and you know what they have a different purchase when they're sitting on a horse and it stands out like to the american writer how different we look but its is effective is what we do we just learn different styles and they learn they have different style when it comes to the length of iron that they reich when it comes to how they moved there Upper body and those body which is which is the lane and their hands and they really think that style is different. Very effective as it showed in the breeders cup performances. You know at one point. When i was a kid. I used to look at the european ryder and jesus christ looks like a wind sale or jays what you know moving so much but you know horses respond to body movement. They change leads. According to your body movement on their back and the mayor rider has gotten away the way where he sits maybe a little firmer looking but he has to learn how to use his weight as he becomes more accomplished rider in to the advantage of the horse. You know like when it comes to going into a turn you know. You want him to change his left. Don't get on the left brain and pull him around the turn. You take your right foot in the iron and kind of sway it out and then you sway your body back in and your poppy when you come to that elaine win. The james leads you use your body weight and and it's a learning process and the european writers have it. I guess from day one. They they used their body weight in the most efficient and effective way. The time you'll see their hind asses kinda come back on a horse's ass and it reminds me of some of the riders. I rode with that kind of saw that bouncing movement on a horse and one of them dictator which you can't many way critic sizes writing styles bill heart attack. I a lot at the end of his career with him. And he had a a inbetween american writer and european writing style. And i say man. That was his kidneys. Must really hurt. When you get all this back. But now it didn't. He got run out of one five preakness the need. I think for vibe. Yeah the guy was a phenomenon. But i really appreciate watching european and the american writers and comparing them and they both or affective inefficient style Glad we went in this direction to because it's something we haven't talked about in years because you know we used to watch those. See those guys flailing and and they don't seem it seems like they've kind of reigned themselves in somewhat they're not as You know his arm and shoulder is they used to be Because to me. It always seemed and i i asked you about this years ago that it seemed like you were you. Were taking the balance and and the the harmony away from the horse that that.

"This time. michael where where did you. Where'd you go with. I mean it was really hard not to make it. My mom fox and i love her He's that's not so much kingsholm as it is like like. That's just that's a. That's a one in a million lines you read a novel but actually What i wrote. What i decided was my king. Ism was the way that charlie at the beginning of the novel when he opens up locker and takes away the padlock and he like and this is a very like stephen king thing He notes the brand of the padlock which is titus rate and he sort of starts Like talking to the padlock of weirdly enough. This is touching on what we were what we talk about in the The shining bonus episode where Steven weber has to talk to the jukebox. Yeah it is weirdly the same right this. The the the stephen king habit of having his characters like openly disgusts or like openly address inanimate objects when they're alone of but yeah so he. He talks about The the padlock in it's a titus padlock. And he just calls it like titus the friendly padlock and i don't know it seems i'm like i can't even find the page that i wrote down now But that's it's just it's it is the the phrase like titus the friendly padlock. You're also good one. I think that's Yeah there's not a lot. There's as we've discussed already. There's all kinds of Resonance with stephen king's work. I wouldn't say that. Any of stephen king style in this book or very little evidence right a lot of content. A lot of approaches to situations and thinking about character types But not a lot of the style of his work but at the same time. It's kind of impressive. That from seventeen years old to seventy A consistent approach to character and and the construction of a novel napa. you know. that's that's saying something. we gotta talk about. Uncle steve's mixing quite a few songs in this. Yeah there's a lot of songs in this one Because bluegrass makes. This is the other like the the character. Note the other character note for charlie. I don't think we ever get another king protagonist Like this charlie. You might think He's probably a rock guy. you know. Classic rock guy like your stephen king. No charlie loves bluegrass music And that's and my references specifically to the fact that at one point he says you've got to listen to this bluegrass record. It really makes you. He he had no. That's i posted this on twitter so listeners might have might have been familiar with a Yeah it's when he's going to the party and he meets like joma kennedy's friend who gives them he he he gives them we'd or something And it's like jerry turned back to me. You ever heard of the clinch mountain boys which is a real bluegrass group. By the way. I shook my head and heard of them though. You gotta listen to this. He said boy is horny. I do not know what that is intended to mean. 'cause i would never two million years described the clinch mountain boys as horny. No i wouldn't listen to the record. So the have one record from the early seventies and so. I'm just kind of you know hoping that's about right and listen to it in and it's like it's like saying you know what i love. You know what really gets me. Go in as a person the The brother were art thou soundtrack..

"Cream was a yoga. He got into yoga so cream getting really have to do the old things of taking your ankles and other things like that because he was very very flexible limber, and he took very good care of himself, so he goes, he turns and Steve Mix was under him it all and he came down and twisted his ankle. And you should have heard the form. When he went down twisted his ankle, start living down courts. The Dead quiet and the only people you heard was the sixers. Yeah, we've got him now. We've got now and it was just A. It was just the weirdest feeling our court. We were winning the game at that particular time, and it was just weird. Because we know what cream down, it's going to be very difficult because we have other legitimate center. You Know Jim backup. Center at that time, so we get game and Jack Jack Current. Current at the time was our trainer, and he's like guys I gotTa Getting Ready. And after the game I remember everybody was getting their stuff on. It was real quiet in our locker room and reporters are in there, and they were talking, but they weren't interviewing, too many people because the doctors were in the in the training room had the door closed and we were just waiting to hear word on where the cap is GonNa go. So as report leave, most of the guys will get dressed and you know you need locker room you. Go home, and do whatever but we all of a stage in the locker room until they finally, the porter's last as probably about an hour and a half afterwards when we come back. And they're saying you guys. There's nothing broken. the GONNA ourself and a cat won't be. Going to Philadelphia. while. I was like you know what let's just go home and think this is a bad dream. The mid would wake up and everything. Good Mile, so magic goes. You know what guys come on, guys, let's go. We got this cash. Not all right. He'll be there okay, so we go home. And You know all night. Everybody's thinking thinking thinking then on the news at night it goes. Cream has still questionable about him playing. Let the Evening News, so we are leaving the next morning. We get on the plane. And back then we just get on the plane. Then look anything like it was. Today walked out street, walking on a plane and we're all sitting there. And it's about maybe twenty minutes for us to leave. And we're sitting there. And by that time. We realized that CAP wasn't coming. Because Korean was early. Bird He. You get there early and he's in his seat. Were sitting there and everybody's Kinda quiet, and you know kind of looking around and you know. West is got his head down because he's into notes and stuff and. we hear this music. Plan it on Frankie. Beverly and maze and we hear this getting closer and closer and magic. It's on the things. He has a huge box on the boombox. I looks at all of us, and he's standing right there first class in the aisle. Which? Nobody said anything he said. Hey, listen have no fear. Magic Johnson is here 'cause thing off, and he starts his big laugh. And you are a T- that set everybody at ease, and it was magical. It truly was you know his young kid. And we're just playing. We're not really thinking about winning the championship plan. And he set the tone and that tone was set going to Philadelphia. We start the plane up. Get on the plane. Everybody has good ride. Guys when you think about the run that Donovan mcnabb had with the Philadelphia. Eagles Bro. I know they didn't win. A Super Bowl but I'll tell you what I was covering the eagles at that moment. In that timeframe okay, and I had a really good relationship with dominic nab I had a good relationship with Andy Reid. I always got access to to the Philadelphia Eagles. I got access to all the Philadelphia teams to be honest with you. Man Steve Mix I. think that guy so much. What he did for me with the Philadelphia Seventy Sixers, a great guy to me a great mentor and there's many guys that helped me in. In that Philadelphia area, but but the truth is I can make a serious case for Donovan mcnabb being in the hall of fame when you think about the great run that they had yes, they never won the the all mighty, but but a great run and a great streak for several years. There I think it was four years. If I'M NOT MISTAKEN GETTING NFC championship game finally, getting over the Hump and the Super Bowl. mcnabb throwing up in that huddle, not feeling well Te'o. Going off on I remember it all. Okay, you lie manning. We've got two great years with Eli Manning where he went super bowl rings, and then there's a lot of garbage in between Philip rivers. You got a guy that can toss up numbers left and right like crazy. Has. This guy won anything and at the end of the day I think they all wind up getting in the hall of fame, maybe not first ballot and the guy that does that is probably ally, but the other guys eventually do they wind up getting in what say you Mike Wilson? I'm with you on mcnabb, and I've and I've always been there with mcnabb. I think he's a hall. Favor you can. You can certainly like you said make an argument for that the other. Excuse me the other? you look, you can make an argument either way with ally. and. Rivers rivers goes through numbers in a Lotta Times I. Think People get caught up in the numbers instead of looking at what what he's really what he's accomplished in his career. I mean you could. I could grow for sixty thousand yards and most of his be like okay. Those big numbers are hall of fame numbers, but as he got to the playoffs as he got to a conference. You Know Multiple Conference titled Games the got to the Super Bowl heavy, won the super bowl, but the MVP's and but you know all those kinds of things so you know you I. You lie would be a tough one for me. Even though he has two super bowls, I and like I said you know. Does he have the superbowl been conference thing, but like you said any. There's there's a lot of. Lot of math you know in between all of that with you I, so that would be for me I be a little tougher call. rivers I. I'm not there yet with him, but now yeah, I'm I'm there with now? Look. Again this is all subjective stuff I. Love Best is the comments we get from people so. Seriously check out the door funds sports page on facebook people and. Seriously like get involved with us. Talk to us about things. And I got another one for you. Which Division Are you liking? Better, the NFC? West or the NFC south, and obviously the players are the rams the cardinals. The forty niners, the seahawks and the other side. You got the panthers Tampa Bay now with Tom Brady got. Atlanta and you've got drew brees their New Orleans. I Dunno man. I have to go me personally. I have to go with the NFC west right now. Because I think the quarterbacks are slightly better, and that's only because we don't really know what's going on in Carolina Yeah. We know about Tom Brady new guys. Maybe the best best set of weapons guys ever had drew brees. We know that this guy can do, but will there be any dissension from his teammates. With, obviously what he said Atlanta Mattie ice. I'm not sure this guy's recovered since the super bowl from a couple years back I, don't think Atlanta's covered in general, and then you look at the other side, right? You Got Jimmy Garoppolo the quarterback there with San Fran and Obviously he he's. He's coming up in his own rights. You Got Russell who's amazing. We love this guy. I'm not. I'm not sold on on on jared. Goff and I'm not sold on Kyle Maria, but I do like the upside on both these guys, so I'm GonNa. Say.

"A jokey mood I totally understand that Joe Taylor joining me but it is April first and we thought it best for last a joy the most foolish trades in sports history so I I've said before if your franchise is bad it's often because your owner doesn't know what they're doing and all orders always finalize trades so here are the most foolish trades on April fools day number one the red Sox traded Babe Ruth to the Yankees the red Sox will go eighty six years without a title and the Yankees won four with bait but here's what's worse they try to the best baseball player ever for a hundred grand and a loan that's because the owner of the red Sox used the loan to finance musicals for his productions in New York change the direction of those franchises forever the Hornets trade Kobe Bryant to the Lakers what did Charlotte get foreign lot eight devotes who played two seasons for Charlotte and the like Kobe's one of the great players in league history well here's another great one by an ownership group seventy Sixers acquired Dr J. so they bought the Sixers in Philadelphia at the time a very well run franchise but Dr J's contract for three million dollars from the nets so the next in New York made the next pay them almost five million for invading the next territory so the nets actually offered Dr J. to the Knicks and classic mix they turn down Dr J. who goes to the rival seventy Sixers and wins an M. V. P. there's a championship and he was eleven time all star and you could argue in the seventies was as iconic he went from the ABA to the NBA so the next could have him and is it not interested Philadelphia's like well they get in Philadelphia's franchise if you if you remember the seventies in the NBA Steve Jones Dr J. Caldwell Jones Steve mix I think it was was it Steve Jones or Bobby Jones just Billy Cunningham was the coach it was a great time how about thunder trading James harden to the rockets here's what's weird about that so we got a couple of first round picks they got it Kevin Martin was a talented NBA player and Jeremy lamb didn't pan out but the reason OKC really did it is because they wanted to avoid the luxury tax but the luxury tax was going up that year anyway so they played a wiggled around it and paid a very little luxury tax and had James harden OKC eventually of course lost harden Westbrook and Kevin Durant that hurts no titles sorry this is painful sonic strayed Scotty Pippen the Chicago Bulls most NBA die hards know that big the bulls got Scotty Pippen the fifth overall pick for Oldham pollen is golden ponies and a couple of graphics the old was out of Seattle in three and a half years average about seven a game of Scotty was the ultimate the best robin in league history to a Batman ended up winning you know six titles but the golden ponies and a couple of you know what let me take some if the Seattle sonics get Scotty Pippen with the players they had Seattle still has an NBA franchise because Seattle's pride got a couple one or two yeah I mean they they Sean Payton Shawn camp Gary Payton Scotty Pippen yeah I'd say they win some titles and this is the old timer the St Louis hawks traded bill Russell the Boston Celtics Boston won eleven titles with bill Russell I mean it was the first the Yankees in the Celtics of the first real dynasties maybe Notre Dame football American sports so here's how it happened bill also was not a second pick in the draft the first pick belonged to the Rochester Royals but read our back the coach and GM of the Celtics at listen all give you the ice Capades for your ownership group I'll give you the ice Capades if you don't take bill Russell first and updated about drafting not bill Russell they drafted like cliff Hagen says here Celtics won eleven titles by the way Rochester I would move to Cincinnati the following year soul music cold ice Capades and the New York Knicks passed up on Dr J. there's a lot of bad ones but when I as I looked over the really really bad decisions it it's its owners to have a real piled the stuff has brought a lot of vision there not a lot of it it's it's funny that so I grew up as a NBA fan but I remember the ABA and I never saw a be a games on TV you just get occasional highlights or pictures or stuff but Dr Jay was like it was some good players in the ABA there was like artis Gilmore Dan Issel was a very good player but Dr Jay was like this like crazy die like likes will build the birds swooping in dunks in style and it's like the Knicks in New York can you imagine how big Dr J. would have been in New York think about how big he was in Philadelphia but he was the guy that I could argue Dr Jay was the first guy like I remember watching Laker games very early a blazer games with bill Walton but Dr Jay was the first player that was a highlight player like like Jerry west was good Gail Goodrich was good for the Lakers as a kid but they were like you didn't you couldn't wait you see doctor J. like a highlight and it was like he didn't like anybody else let nobody that stuff that doesn't look like anybody else can you imagine how big he would've been in New York while also bill Simmons came on earlier today for almost thirty minutes we don't do that much but now that we are in our radio studio the show has a little more radio feel to it and that we have no games and no no sports right we have a lot of good topics but we don't have games so I'll be bringing on Bob Costas bill Simmons mark Cuban Charles Barkley put Amman twenty minutes twenty five minutes second hour and just might shift keys in our second hour tomorrow so we were talking I didn't review bill and at the very end I I talk about the patriots but I had asked him about Tom Brady and bill said before he when he said well what time are you getting the littlest bus talk Brady here so he he he he talked about Brady leaving New England after all these years why now twenty years you have a chance to have one of the all time iconic drafted by a team finish your career with the team think did you watch the reaction with Kobe in Los Angeles how how much he meant to people here because he stayed there the whole time he settled here and all the connections we have like what is better than that for a legacy night you're gonna go to camp you can at your place for Bruce Arians you're gonna place have a bunch of seventy five year olds in the stands of the team with the history like how how do you do that I was to start your career and yeah I mean you know Michael Jordan I went in the prime of his career that I didn't get but when he went and then went to the wizards then I really didn't get but I think a lot of time for players it's not really you know sports is very unique your could be one thing like for me if I ever retire and I'm like sixty eight well to be honest with you I don't have the energy I'm having two hour naps in the afternoon I can only choose oatmeal there are certain things that you like you if you get to a point where physically your your your body is saying to you Hey it's time to be over but it's different in sports because athletes are often contemplating retirement at thirty two thirty two I had so much energy you you feel a little bit bullet proof it thirty to like even if you're a pro athlete you may be an NBA player but you know you got a bad knee but you still you look around at society you're bigger and you're stronger you don't have any wrinkles yet you know you feel you.

"These dudes were bad men. I even remember sneaking into blue chips the movie just to see those guys on the big screen. I've never actually been a magic fan but I sure did love those years until shack broke my heart and left for L. A. My question is was. This duo underrated. And do you have a particular basketball moment? That changed the way you think of the world and he said thanks Also for bringing some much needed nostalgia back during these trying times and he agreed with me like Michael when I said last week that Jordan wearing forty five during that season was super weird and he he went on to say it was. Obviously the reason the Bulls were knocked out of the playoffs that year. So I'm not sure we're going to go to the numerology explanation on why. Michael actually lost in the playoffs but Michael. I'm curious were you as big on shack and penny as our guys Steven from Canada for first off sneaking into blue chips is a great move that I can kind of relate to. I actually snuck into Kazan. Back in the day which was shacks great great movie about. I don't even remember him being a genie and remember there were cheeseburgers. The flute fell from the sky. Quality Quality Movie Kazam set the record for Academy Awards. I think he did like I think. WanNa say like twenty two. Nominations in seven wins. If I'm not mistaken all time records in both but anyway continue no yeah. I think you're onto something there. I would say that if we're just saying shack and penny. Are they underrated properly rated I think back to the early nineties magic thirty for thirty. That came out a little while back and they were getting compared to durant and Westbrook and hardened in that era of the Oklahoma City Thunder and that felt accurate to me. I mean they were young. They were exciting but at the end the day. They did not accomplish what we thought they could. So in in that form. They're kind of like their legacy is Kinda just tragic and that really sucks to say. But that's how they're remembered and I think that that is that's accurate that's how they should be remembered. They were capable of so much more in part because penny was capable of so much more injuries just kind of derailed his career later and then of course the split Split gives wound Wanda being underrated because of shacks split with Kobe Right. So it's like not even Shaq's highest profile divorce which leaves penny as like you know his second ex wife which okay you know tortured analogy there but you sort of get where. I'm going pennies. Real legacy to me has become the commercials the Nike commercials because those have held up so well tyra banks in those commercials formative experience for you know many viewers around the world. Yes we don't need to get into this but yes I I agree. I wasn't going to get into it. I was going to leave it there. Michael grown in your voice was slightly creepy. Little borderline creepy. But I think they're a little bit underrated but they did like. You're saying they didn't really accomplish that much. So they're gonNA wound up getting lost to history slightly One thing though I I want to mention one of my proudest moments of my life Michael and this is going back when I was probably in college. So right around the turn of the century which boy that's such an old man thing to say. Maybe I am this driver's Ed instructor but right around two thousand Penny Hardaway was doing some event at Venice Beach in California and I just happened to be there during the summer. I don't know exactly why. But he was walking away from the event and I don't exactly know what I said Michael but I made some sort of a wise crack it might have even been referenced. The Penny Hardaway commercials but my wife's crack made Penny Hardaway. Laugh and to me like outfit to that point in my life. That was my greatest achievement and I basically reminded my friends of that on almost a daily basis and I would always have them vouch for me to other people. Hey guys you remember when i Made Penny Hardaway Laugh. And they're like yeah we do you like. It was like three second exchange as he was walking by and he was just being kind but for assault. Five years there. Michael that was the that was the best thing I've ever done now. That's incredible and I mean that should probably go. I don't I'm not going to say that's the first line of your obituary but that's gotta fit there somewhere for. Its way up on the list. Stephen I really hope I impress you with that. Incredibly lame story alright. Nathan checks in for Melbourne Australia. He writes hey lads longtime listener first-time emailer. I'm really big and I'm listening to a few miss shows on my new couch. Self Isolating Best Practices Strange Times. We're an and Michael. He goes on to give us a nonsense email. That really did not make any sense Nathan. I understand what you're up to and how you're coping I get it no judgment there but just to be slightly more coherent with the rest of your email next time Michael. We're just going to spin his question which was sort of about going back in time to nineteen forty six and going through every NBA finalist to kind of put together a dream finals again. It wasn't coherent it didn't make sense. But here's what I'm GonNa ask you Michael and I'm GonNa pretend this question came from Nathan are baked friend in Melbourne. What was the one finals game that took place before you were born? Dad You wish you could have attended and maybe even written about as a media member is there one? Is it your white whale game that you wished you could have a time machine and be like you know twenty thirty years older so you could have gone to experience. What is Michael so first of all our questions in this episode? Just off the roof through the charts incredible. I want to say that. Yeah off off the roof in through the charts. You're starting to sound like Michael Jordan right now and the ceiling is the roof or is it through the roof and off the chart and see what's happening or are you making up new phrases or am. I just behind the Times. I'm just I'm feeling a lot of inspiration from Nathan and your what's going on with him right now. You gotta you gotta you gotTa Contact High Forbid. Exactly do out there. You're not gonNA throw off your favorite podcast hosts or not going to be able to concentrate. His drug. Free know. Dare dare to keep kids off drugs. Anyway Michael Crichton no but I really loved where you went and where you took this which was You know trying to find the the the white whale finals game before we were where we're alive and for me. It's pretty easy Game for of the Nineteen eighty-four finals this game The two teams were the Los Angeles Lakers. In the Boston Celtics the Celtics were trailing two games to one. They had just gotten blown out in game. Three the series was looking very bleak. They were down six with about seven minutes to go when Kevin McKell clotheslines Kurt Rambis and just the whole spirit of the entire series. The energy shift stores the Celtics and they eventually win it in seven and push their undefeated finals record to eight. No against the Los Angeles Lakers so that game just is like I mean growing up around Boston. You would see clips of that nonstop. All the time people would still be referencing it. It was like better than Carlton. Fisk homerun It was just it was it was a incredibly meaningful place so that's gotTa be the game for me. I would have loved to be in the building. For that and experience it firsthand do you consider yourself bloodthirsty Michael in other words? Are you wishing you had been there to watch? Ramps collapsed to the court. Or is it more of just like History aspect of that victory? It's just I think it's a little bit of both to be honest with you You do strike me as bloodthirsty Michael in your own. Just kinda quiet psychopath type away. Just maybe a little bit. I'm not gonNA refute any of that now. Well I'm going to stand up for the Lakers side of things On this one. I think that's a great pick. I'm not going to detract from it. I'm just going to go a different direction. The game that I've always wished I could have watched in person or covered or everything else one that I've always heard about for years. It's kind of a stereotypical pig or an easy pick. Probably but it's game six of the nine thousand nine hundred eighty. Nba Finals Magic Johnson sort of emergence as arguably like an all time great in his rookie year. Of course the story goes criminal. Jabbar's hurt. He can't play in game six against the sixers. It's in Philadelphia. There may be going to save him for game seven if they need to Magic Johnson. A rookie who's twenty years old and gets thrust into the role as a center in. Kareem's place is going to be able to save the day. What do you know he does by putting up? Forty two points fifteen rebounds seven assists three steals and a block in forty seven minutes. He Shot Fourteen of twenty three from the field. That stat line feels fake for any era feels made up the idea that you would do that in a closeout finals. Game as a rookie is just preposterous. And I went back through. Has anyone else done this in the finals? Like Shirley Lebron US put up a forty two fifteen and seven. Right never happened. No one else has ever match that stat line in the NBA. Finals might do it. Lebron to do it no one else except for rookie year. Magic Johnson. I'm sure the sports writers of their day were running that that famous word quote unquote unprecedented into the ground. After that game right every single person's I never seen this before. Like what are we even compared to do? We adopt magic into the Hall of fame as a twenty year old. Of course he had just come off the the national title win the previous year with the Michigan State. People were probably just freaking out. At what the next fifteen or twenty years of Magic's career might have looked like an and certainly You know he delivered with just crazy. Encore career you know leading showtime for the next decade but at that moment in one thousand nine hundred eighty you probably was just like mind blowing and I wish I had been there to have my mind blown. Can I just add real quickly that I actually watched highlights of that game over the weekend? Because they were airing or maybe I just. Dvr The the basketball love story. Espn's ten part twenty hour documentary. Which I just cannot recommend highly enough to anyone listening to this. You should go and watch that right now I think it's streaming on ESPN's and they have highlights from that game. Which I I'd never actually obviously was aware of it. I knew the box score line. I knew the stakes and everything but I'd never seen just a stream of clips and highlights from it and like it is just magical breathtaking. And it's like you're literally watching a legend. Be Born before here as I could not even imagine being there in real time to see that happen knowing. It's crazy the team. He he played against by the way had Maurice Cheeks Doctor Dr J. Darryl Dawkins Lionel Holland's Caldwell Jones Bobby Jones Henry Bibby Steve Mix. I mean eight-man rotation guy names that most people would recognize thirty years later right and I guess now forty years later and for Magic to put that the team without cream on his back and do it like that it's just wild man and Great Plug their for basketball love story. That's something that everyone should be turning to during this hiatus no question about it. All right Michael. We've got two more questions and they're fairly serious that we're going to get to here. I want to make sure we had this one. It's coming in from Fritz. And he's responding to my idea that I was kind of preaching this idea of look like this hiatus this krona virus is changing everybody's life but do whatever you can to adopt a like. Hey you know it's eventually going to be okay mentality and push off your international trips or whatever else it might be into the future and just try to be as patient as possible and Fritz makes a great point here he writes. I totally understand. The delay mentality is important and it's true for most things but I'm a high school senior and the one thing I can't really delay is my senior spring instead. It's pretty much canceled. And it seems that summer may also be in doubt. This applies to all high school and college seniors but for my friends and I as athletes. We've all lost our senior nights. Our last chance at championships are last time playing on a team. Competitively with our friends excetera.

"I think Toronto worry as it speaks. So well to the game. This is this this is what the game of basketball. We like to think in manically is all about I'll I'll take you back a forty two years to a very specific scenario. The seventy Sixers of Dr J and George mcginnis, and we'll be free. I think he was still Lloyd in those days and Darryl Dawkins and Bobby and Steve mix at all. Okay. They were very much more glamorous team than the than young Portland trailblazers. And and it was billed this. A contrast of the flashy town. Laden team versus the T E A M. And of course, led by the greatest all around center in the history of the game in my judgment. But anyway, and who prevailed after the first, well, we know who prevailed. So I mean, yes, it's this is an I it speaks for the dynamics of the game that that what you're saying. Here's the key to Milwaukee. We talked about earlier they all understand their off content in their roles. And Secondly there they have an identity on defense, which includes very much includes at the combo, but they have an identity they've given themselves on defense. And that hasn't changed in. That's not flickering at all. And so it works. Yeah. That that's working very well for them without having this abundance of of all star game. "The announcement of Joe Biden is causing a lot of speculation as to how. Well, he's going to do given the fact that Joe Biden is. He's pretty white. Didn't he? And he's pretty male. And he's got a long track record, including lots of things that he voted on the left now continues to be just abominable including voting for the Iraq war. Very interesting. I told you he was going to enter he kicking himself every day for not entering back in. Twenty sixteen. Against hillary. Yeah. He feels now he could have gotten the nomination. And the reason he didn't get into it is because he felt that she would be perceived as sexist because she was anointed she was entitled she got.
