Spike Lee: I'm done watching Knicks at MSG this season

"And this is so next by the way yeah introduce Leon rose yesterday you're going up against the rockets who are on a roll with Westbrook and harden you have beat the rockets L. R. J. Barrett has a really nice game Leon roses water now what a start for the New York Knicks well the New York Knicks how bout that and then the biggest story the next day the national story the next day is that Spike Lee got an altercation with security guards and what happened is spike Lee's been a season ticket holder for thirty something years Hey you know when he was on first take today it was revealed that he spends about three hundred thousand dollars a year see the garbage that are the New York Knicks at nineteen forty two I have been embarrassing thanks Steve mills since two thousand and thirteen had three hundred and sixty five losses and its wings were like one seventy eight or are there under two hundred so the next it's one thing to be bad on the court but there's been so many moments where they've been a laughing stock off the court with the Charles Oakley situation which Oakley wasn't a hundred percent on the right he said it conducted himself better but the next find a way to make whatever the situation is the absolute worst thing possible so you have Spike Lee entering what he claims the building the entrance thirty dollars each and every year for the thirty years that he's been there I actually know the entrance it's the thirty third street entrance of Madison Square Garden in between seventh and eighth Avenue I've gone through that entrance it's an employee a media member entrance I would I cover the rain I cover the range of postseason for those two great runs and I went there a countless amount of times and every time I walked in there I've seen a famous person or to go through that secret or not secret but that important entrance so with that all being said even though it says employees and media you see celebrities in there all the time for example I was a regular person going to Billy Joel a few months ago and they had me pick up my tickets there and go through that entrance who did I think jazz voluntary so they have the labs like actual celebrities going through that entrance all the time so whatever it is and whatever transpired the New York Knicks claim that they told Spike Lee many times not to go to that entrance anymore you have to go through our V. I. P. entrance which is on thirty first St Michael Lee he claims but that was never told to it and this is something he claims he's done for thirty years going through this entrance so let's hear Spike Lee on first take earlier today was Stephen A. and Max Kellerman and Molly telling his side of the story with the whole MSG confrontation I've been using the same entrance the twenty plus years employees enters on three third street yesterday last night I go in my ticket is scanned I'm it I would you know the elevator yes one elevator and elevator also people have the tickets can also and L. is not moving and the security guy called me said we need to get off the elevator I said for what so we could speak about a NASA might get not elevator so no five minutes then they probably sent Elliott because they know I'm not do not elevator get on the elevator other groups of five and screamed waking life is run on a bases still soft and they said security guy all this comes to the top do you want me to leave the garden walk outside data out the thirty third street employers what came from walk outside and come back on thirty first St I somebody doing a personable you scanned my ticket you can scan and check it twice also I noticed once you leave the sport arena event you can't come back to it so I don't trust these guys so I'm not going to help you dork so I said I'm not leaving I put my hands behind my back and I sit or rest me like my brother Charles Oakley do we really need to get our rescue because you're refusing to leave like Spike Lee I don't think that's going to end up what happening spike Lee's gonna be dry data there and hand comes out but you know we talked about how they scanned his ticket so sincerity scanned his ticket no matter who you believe in this he said you know she said I owe you know they'd they'd never told me to go to this other engines they did tell me to go to the dentist about who you believe is the easy way to defuse the situation we already scanned your ticket spike in future you know moments when you come into the guard in future times you need to now go to the thirty first street next time you do this because I'm assuming it's similar security guard night in and night out I just my experience is going in there to see the same security guards we won't scan your ticket again I'm gonna tell you to go to that entrance it's all they had to do and then he also goes on first take and says he didn't shake this is my third did not believe Spike Lee totally he says he didn't shake Dolan sand and then the next because when they confront each other halftime the next up to be so badly they can never just let something blow over the New York Knicks then released a photo as it don't put someone up in the three hundred section looks at the blue seats and Adam shoot down on this sort of situation the photo kinda looks like that Spike Lee at his hand down to his side and then all the sudden don't basically picked it up it looks like a forced hand shake but regardless there's a photo of them shaking each other's hand regardless of who is it shouldn't be a story you just introduce your new president Leon rose you beat the rockets but the next can never let a story just go

Steve Mills Fired as Knicks President Ahead of NBA Trade Deadline

"Let's talk about the next for a second the New York Knicks I just don't get this organization I will never get this organization the James Dolan wake up today and finally realized yeah it's not a good idea to have Steve mills running this team since two thousand and thirteen I don't know I took them this long Steve mills record as you know running the next weather was a president of GM the box seventy eight and three sixty five why did it take you this long to finally realize that trade deadline Thursday were talking about all these trades yeah that guy run the organization it took you that long and the original scape goat was David phase Dale and you hear the stuff the last few weeks that the Knicks expected to be a playoff contender contender of what in the G. in the Ural and the NC double I you thought they were going to be a playoff contender in the NBA were your biggest move this offseason was what bringing in Morrison Julius Randle he had thought that team is going to be a playoff team the next day try to sell you on things but not even the dumbest person in the world would believe and the next thing quality it's so finally they wake up today in James Dolan and he says it's time to move on from Steve mills but we're gonna keep the GM Parry and you hear from motion asking for the foreseeable future that's pretty ambiguous I love bush how do you define the unforeseeable future that you're gonna keep a mad as the GM is that for the rest of the season or is that for next season of the year after that and now the Knicks are targeting missile use yearly and I wonder if James Dolan knows that missile you Gerry once an interview said that he hates the necks wait till Dolan's people tell me about that don't get a demand an apology from a site you Jerry users get apologize it's not gonna be good enough probly so don't get beside you Jerry I think that would be a great move but what makes you think it's actually gonna work though he's down to look what he's done with the Toronto raptors as long as the laundromat Tino I don't think it's going to be successful I really truly believe that he is that bad of an owner he tries and everybody tries it's improper any is where loyalties how he was this oil to Steve mills for what name me one good thing Steve mills is done and if your missile you Jerry unless they give you a John Burton type of contract why would you want to go to the next you can right now is going to be a championship team the Los Kawhi Leonard and you're still in a good spot the Knicks are just not an attractive destination I get it it's New York I get it's Madison Square Garden why would you want to play for the next right now why would you want to run the next right now other than money because the next clown show there is a circus and their decision making is brutal absolutely brutal how long it takes them to make some of these decisions and out through the process they took the blame on other people and they free up the people that are probably the most deserving of the blame so the next move on from Steve mills and I guess next fans can thank the trade deadline because I guess that's what got him fired and to go from one New York team to another my New York Mets it looks like our savior moving on from the bad owners of Jeff full pond in trouble palm is going to be Steve Coll and it looks like the New York Mets the the wheel ponds well they changed some of the terms of the deal and Steve Coll and didn't like that and some of the reports are indicating that that deal is now dead beautiful time it is to be New York sports fan the jets with their laughable owners the Mets with their laughable owners in the next with their laughable owners what else can go wrong seriously what else can

NBA Trade Deadline: D’Angelo Russell To The Knicks?

"We're going to go through all the major players teams and things and what they can happen as we were just over forty eight hours away from the trade deadline online. So let's start there Ryan with the New York Knicks. They are actually one of the more interesting teams around the deadline. That got a lot of potential assets that they could be sending out. Marcus Morris has one of those guys. They've got a lot of potential interesting. Big teams could be interesting and also we've heard rumors about their interest in de Ngelo Russell in some sort of trade situation with the Golden State Warriors. So what could you tell us. What's what's the what's the latest on the next and what you're hearing about their plan now that they've no longer have Steve Mills that has their president as we approached the trade deadline? I'd be frustrated about about the de Ngelo Russell rumors if I were Nix fan because keep in mind. The Knicks had a bunch of cap space last year it was widely known that the Brooklyn Nets and other teams. We're going to pursue Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving and that the Ngelo Russell may be acquire -able and When the Knicks did not get a meeting with Kevin Durant or Kyrie Irving they quickly shifted and signed a a bunch of power forwards including Julius randle and Marcus Morris and Bobby Portis and did not go after Daniel Russell despite a big hole at the point guard position? So you know if the Knicks were to trade a bunch of assets for Liangelo. I think that would look pretty bad. You know six or seven months after free agency but You know this is where the Knicks I think they have the worst point guard or depth and talent rotation in the league. I I don't think they have a viable starter right now. It'd be hard to say that Frank Nickel Tina or Dennis Smith junior is they're offered Payton. It is a at least they'll even league average started so I understand why they have some interest in in the Angela Russell again I think they should be looking long term. I think they should could see if they can get the late first round pick from a contender for Marcus Morris. I keep an eye and the clippers Rudy. He made a good point earlier about the clippers ability to trade a first round. Pick the last time in in a in a while So you deal that would work. is Marcus Morris going to La For Mo- heartless and a first something like that. So that's that's where I'd be exploring if I were in the next front office but again what they should do and what they are doing. I think maybe two very different things I heard the next. They're interested in keeping Morris and they may potentially even add to their team like trying to trade for a Daniel Russell which I think would be a mistake but Yeah with what they have going on in the front office right now with with the changes in the short term pressure. I wouldn't be surprised if they make an aggressive move to try to add to their help me out with the NGELO. Russell like feel like they're the team in in the Leveraged Bridge position. But I don't feel that way I feel like there's kind of like a ticking time bomb on when they can get rid of him but it seems like the more they ask for assets. The people are willing to give that up like me understand de Ngelo Russell. Why teams are so interested in getting good question scale? I think because if you're a team that needs a young point guard which is we've discussed. This show is probably the most difficult position to fill in today's NBA. You don't have one then. The NGELO Russell is the best player lawyer who looks like he's available or maybe available either now or in the summer so I think if you're a team you know you're probably kick the tires on a guy like drew holiday. I especially especially if you're a contending team but if you're a team that's trying to build like the Knicks or like the Minnesota Timberwolves and Diangelo Russel is appealing because he's relatively young. He's in his prime him and he's under team control for the next four years One of the questions. I had prior to this. Trait season was whether teams look at. The Angelo is overpaid now because keep in mind Minnesota talking to a deal with the Ngelo Russell and the twenty five million dollar a year range. I ended up getting an average of about thirty from Golden State. So that's not a significant difference Overall but it does impact your team building your your salary cap and potential luxury tax ramifications down the road. So I agree with this gal but I think You know Diangelo. Russell is available now teams know that if they can't get him now that will almost certainly be available over the summer. And if you're a team like Minnesota where the young star and Karl Anthony towns who doesn't want to wait to win games aims and your teams lost eleven or twelve in a row. I think that makes Dangelo Russell. Even more appealing.

"Even if we don't we will giving her all and these guys will play meaningful basketball in March and April and scalise. I think that it has some value. But here's here's where I don't understand so they have a lot of picks moving forward right but they need to meet. They need like a dynamic player. So let's say you were sitting at the third pick in the draft. Would you take six first. Rounders I to trade up for the third picking the draft to maybe drop down to to fourteen th or one thousand nine hundred or whatever the number is and that's why like I believe. Jj rettig you can get a pick for him. I don't know if I'm right by that but I think so I think for Jrue holiday you can get a pick for him so if you had eight picks could you who wiggle your way to the top of the draft and get a dynamic player. That's where I'm like a little confused about in this business with someone like the warriors say Gimme mediate picks and now just deal about and I'll give reverse round picks for Gordon. I'll give two first round picks for another wing. So I'm confused with New Orleans. Why would they want more assets so they can move up in this draft to get like I can Edwards or something like that. Well I think there are a couple of factors is there scale The first is that historically in the NBA. That doesn't happen that often if ever I mean there aren't many deals. I go back to the Herschel Walker deal in the NFL. That's it's the the famous one with the Dallas Cowboys and Minnesota Vikings. But I the reason I bring that up and switch sports is I can't think of an NBA deal like that where a team has thrown such an overwhelming uh-huh out of draft picks At somebody to move up So that's number one. The second part of that is this is not considered a particularly strong draft even at the top golden estates picking number one and they keep the pick I don't think there's a slam dunk. Scher thing player in the draft. And and then there are a lot of questions about Anthony Edwards or Lamelo ball or the guys Stephen who were slaughtered in in the top five. So I think that's the the you know. Those are a couple of important factors that you mentioned that New Orleans picked rich from the Lakers trade So I think that's why teams don't do it scale You know like I just I just have a hard time like being an NBA fan offices from two thousand thirteen two thousand and three to twenty eighteen. I can't remember the deal where a team took a bunch of picks even picks that You know four or five picks and piece them together to get one player in the top five. I unless I'm missing something historically quickly. I don't think I can go for you. We'll just things going on here. We're in unprecedented territory. We have a championship caliber team team. Tanking where you have all these guys coming back so you do have to factor that in even though you're like I can't think of it because most of those teams are sorry. They're not very good right. So we are in a weird position right here with the warriors and the other one would be in my draft in two thousand one. The Nets traded did their their seventh pick which was Eddie Griffin and they got three first rounders which was ten sixteen in in twenty one. Something like that to move up. The rockets believed that Eddie Griffin was there guy but but I just feel like with the warriors let me just ask you from the warriors perspective. Would you rather have in this strap. One number one pick or if you're trying to win a championship with their roster Mr or five first rounders that you can deal if you're only trying to deal to pick you get more for that number one or would you get more more for five first rounders. Well see the million dollar question is where those first rounders fall as far as the protection and when they're going to convey but I think historically speaking whether it makes logical sense or not you get more for the one number one. Pick the one hyphen than you do for a bunch of picks that may or may not be good So I just think I understand what you're saying. Yeah those kind of deals have happened. Where in the same draft teams package multiple picks to move up but again? I'm struggling to come up with a team. Saying all right we're going to give you four four or five picks over a number of years and some of these future picks have a chance to be pretty good for one guy and we're GonNa Mortgage Our Future one guy in the draft. I think the only time those offers may be on the table. As if there's somebody in the draft like Zion Williamson who teams think is going to be really special and they're willing to mortgage the future for. I don't see that player in in this year's draft I don't think The thirty ATC that player either. They're willing to mortgage the future for that. Which is why I think the warriors just one number one pick that slotted I in the lottery artery has more value than the than the basket of fixed? It may or may not be good down the Road Ryan three or four guests centers that are potentially on the market right now and all of them pretty big names We've got Andre Drummond. We've got miles turner. We've obviously talked about Clinton Cappella and Steven Adams is the other one that is potentially out there of of those four guys. How many of those getting traded great questions? Well I I think drug is the most likely to get traded I. I'm fairly certain Detroit. I wouldn't mind moving on from him. But there's not a lot of value out there as as you know if you WANNA make a trade if you're a seller like Detroit there needs to be a buyer and I think teams are having significant concerns about recyclability Drummond. He has the player option for next year opposed to thirty million. I think a lot of teams if deal would prefer him to opt in then they have the rest so this season and next season to evaluate drama. I think the concern is that You know either. He doesn't play well and ops out because he wants a long term deal or something nothing goes wrong. He gets injured. Any OPS in and I'll say this from a front office perspective guys. I always hated player and options. I think any EXEC hates player options. I understand why any player would love player option. Who wouldn't want that option? That Andre Drummond Hazard that Gordon Hayward has and sometimes you need to put that in there to get the players especially in free agency but from the team perspective you look at contract with a player option Unless it's a no brainer guy. WHO's a Max player? I can be a detriment so I think Detroit will continue to explore the market for her drama and keep an eye on maybe talks with Atlanta resurfacing or potentially Dallas But I I think as far as who has the most value for me. I who I'd be looking at if I were a team. I I start with Cappella and probably miles turner as well I. I'd be evaluating. Those guys are both very different. If you WANNA rebounding rim protecting guy a lot threat to go with Cappella And if you want a guy who can also protect the rim and stretch the floor a little bit go for Miles Turner who I have some questions about the long-term fit alongside the bonus in Indiana with with the cavs love or Thomson. You either one of those guys on the Move Thompson. Yeah I I think Thompson will be Tristan Thompson either via Korea trade scale or if a trait isn't reached. I think a buyout would make sense because You know he's going to be an unrestricted free agent You Know He. He's he's he's a good player. I mean he'd help a championship. Contending team makes eighteen and a half million dollars this year but You know if I'm Cleveland. They're going through a full blown rebuild. I I don't understand why they would resigned Tristan Thompson and part of the reason I say that Gal is because I've said it before I'll say it again. I don't think they're able to trade Kevin Love. I haven't talked to a team yet in the NBA. It'd be willing to take on loves contract. Keep in mind. He has three and a half years left Next year thirty one point two million thirty one point two the year after that and then it does go down a little bit to twenty eight point nine but as you guys know. He's not the most athletic player he's not the best defender. He has a history of knee issues and Unfortunately for Cleveland I think the way most teams look at that contract is as a negative asset. And what I mean by that is if Cleveland were to call and say hey what do you want for Kevin Love you so no like. What are you going to give us for taking Kevin Love on As far as compensation or a young player we like attached to Kevin Love Contract to take on that risk with ninety million dollars remaining over the next three years and we should round out this conversation centers talking about my favorite center in the League. Hassan whiteside. Anyway he gets in Portland he he literally just closed on a house in Portland because he likes it there and I thought well that should be a good deal for our listeners. There's in Portland market. If you're looking to buy luxury property at a discount rate just stay tuned US gallon fouls for the next two days. And maybe there'll be one available on Thursday night or Friday You the answer your questions. scally I wouldn't be surprised if Portland looks to move on from him. The the question I have with Hasan. It's just I don't think he has a lot of value around the league You know he he puts up great counting stats. What I mean by that? Is You always rebounds blocked shots but then when you watch him play when you look at the advanced numbers By and large teams are usually better. When he's off the court then on the court and I think in Portland they signed them for insurer trader for him to be insurance to protect them for You know until burqas comes back obviously at that time. They weren't anticipating that Collins getting injured so he's played a bigger role than they thought he would play. But I just don't see a team setting out to acquire Hassan whiteside scale. I think the way he goes out if you were to get traded would be because he's an expiring contract for salary matching purposes to allow Portland to do a bigger deal deal and and bring it a player helps them win. But I don't think anybody's trying to acquire Hassan whiteside unless there's a pretty good at asset attached coming along with them Ryan and there's three teams that we we only got a couple minutes left here so there's three teams that we haven't really gotten to that. I think are kind of interesting throughout. I'M GONNA throw them out to you and you tell me what you think's interesting about them. That's the Miami Heat. The Denver Nuggets and then finally the o'casey Thunder. We talked about Stephen Adams but There's also a lot of other guys out there that are potentially movable of those three teams what what what are interested in. What are you interested in staying in the next couple of days? Miami is always the big game hunting. They they've done a phenomenal job of drafting and developing their young players. Here's and finding diamonds in the rough You know guys like Kendrick Nunn inducted Robinson. They're playing big roles for them. Derek Jones junior so You know they have some contracts. They'd I'd love to move on from that. I don't think they'll be able to move Starting with the waiters and James Johnson and Kelly Olympic So one guy keep an eye on guys in in in and Miami that I think teams have some interest in their some injury concerns. But they've done this by large justice winslow he. He's been injured for significant portion of this year. He he's a talent the two way player. He's gotten better as a spot up shooter. He's under contract for the next few years so I wonder what the market for justice would be from the front office perspective. If you're training for a guy like that you'd have to take a look at the medical and just make sure that even if he is injured now like he's GonNa be healthy relatively soon and there are no long-term red flags about Miami's you know they're having a great year there. I think on the high end. Maybe the most surprising team in the league. So I think they'll continue to be aggressive as they always are but some of the contracts You Know James Johnson. Kelly Olympic in Dion waiters are pretty scary and Certainly not contracts. I'd want if I were in other front office. Hey just as wisdom has small hands and is that something that you look at when you're evaluating talent. I hear people talking about it.

"Fulfill I think for me you know if if I put Detroit up there as a team that you know their directions clear in is most likely to sell? I put Philly at the opposite end of the spectrum as far as a team that needs to make a move. I don't think Philly can stand Pat We've discussed how good they are at home and how bad they are on the road. You guys talked about it on the show yesterday and they got the doors blown off last night in Miami so they need shooting scholars. Always you know they're they're nineteenth league in three point field goal percentage. They also need another shock creator. In my opinion I mean they guys who can who can make shots Tobias Harris and Al Horford but Yeah you know they need more shooting and they also need somebody who can create their own shot. So they're not so relying on Ben Simmons to do everything offensively or two M B in the post so They're in a tough spot. I I honestly don't know how much value the guys that they've acquired over the last year or so have a trade I think teams at some level scared it to by terrorists contract act. I think teams are scared of Al Horford contract as far as his age. And then you know how Horford wouldn't make a whole lot of sense on a middling team a rebuilding team. So they're in a tough spot the player. I'm looking at in Philly. That spent a Lotta time wondering whether they'll put in place or not as Matisse dive you'll I really like his defensive ability He's a pretty really good shooter for a rookie So that's the give like affiliate serious about continue for championship. I think they may put in play I'd be careful doing that because I think the guy's going to be really okay. Good I think it'd be one of the best perimeter defenders in league but they don't have as many assets as they used to and because of their salary structure in the contract. Those guys are on. They have very limited financial flexibility with the Sixers Ryan. Do you see I mean. We talked about what their off-season can look like if they get balanced earlier if they ever really disappointing sort of playoff. Run here how like how. How flexible are they? Not only at the trade deadline but in the summer like Khanate Move Tobias Harris like what what can they do to shake this thing up. 'cause we've also talked about like the easiest solution is potentially sleep replacing the head coach Brett Brown. We don't think that'll happen in the off season but how flexible how much flexibility. They have going forward not a whole lot of Rudy. I believe they have the most host future money committed as far as team payroll dollars committed in the entire NBA. I mean look next season their their books and keeping in mind that Ben Simmons. This is last year with him on the rookie scale contract so he goes from about eight point one million this year to just under twenty nine million next year. I you combine that with Tobias Harris. I making thirty four Al Horford making twenty seven. Joel embiid making twenty nine and a half and Josh Richardson Making just under eleven. That that's a ton of money and that's tied up in your top five players and if you look at Philadelphia I think their starting five is potentially as good as any in the league but they don't have a lot of depth They don't have a lot of flexibility ability and as I mentioned those two main contracts they. They've signed recently in Tobias Harris and Al Horford teams. I have serious reservations about taking on that money for for those that amount of and I think that leaves chilly in in in a really tough spot because if you look at their bench and the rest of the roster other than five you will guys like Mike Scott Inspire Smith and James. Ns and the rest of the roster doesn't have a ton of value in the trademark. I Ryan jump into my Boston Celtics. Here they have a unique eighteen. They got five guys on this team. That have scored an individual game over thirty points on any given night. Anybody can go up. Do they have too many scoring wings and do they need more front court size or would you sort of stand pat and see how this plays out at. The Celtics are avid quietly. Having a really good year scale has as you know I. I don't think it's getting enough attention nationally but one of the few teams in the League. That's in the top ten and offensive and and defensive efficiency They don't have a traditional center but they're finding out a way to defend well enough and as you mentioned. They have a lot of scoring balanced scoring so my guess is if any to make a big move Like to save bringing Clint Capella. It would not be touching one of their core players. I don't think it would involve Marcus smart or Gordon Hayward or someone like that you know maybe Daniel Thais and his canter and try to build the salaries up that way then they have to Romeo Lankford or another young player in the deal to make the money work but My guess is they. Don't touch the core of their roster. They're young and good most of the guys other than Hayward Who are rotation players for them or under control for a long time? And so I I keep in mind. They keep their powder dry to some extent or they have to save some level of money for Jason Tatum. WHO's eligible for an extension this summer and I think we'll get a Max dealer near Max Max deal so Scott I looked for them to potentially upgrade around the margins Keep in mind. They do have three first round. Picks year One from Memphis their own from Milwaukee which will be the thirty fifth in the first round. So I I think Danny will look to upgrade the team. That way I I can't see them like you know. People ask me over the last couple of days where they trade Marcus Smart Cappella You know I don't have any inside info there but knowing the way I do and how he values Marcus smart. I just can't see him doing like that like I said more. It's you know size or or cantor. Our guys were they say are we can take somebody at the same position and then clearly upgrade and get a guy in Capella. WHO's under team control for the next three or four years at a reasonable salary schedule as You keep that if Capellas realistic and they had to give up like Thais Cancer Maybe Langford pick is that is that does that make make them like scary as hell? Because I mean we've talked about like they're they seem like they are one big away if they keep that five wing player if all of those five wing players attack Atagi like Capella yet or maybe not as deep but yup I always there five six patients. Pretty impressive is that something that you think Danny would be interested in like. Is that possible. Or I don't know I I'm just being honest I don't know how good Capella is. I like Capella but I I don't Houston looking to get rid of him. I feel like he's perfect. Big Man for them. He's gotta gotTa have not stupid. I mean he might be a gunslinger. WanNa make trait one thing. I know he's not dumb. If darrow Maury is worried about Capella then I'd be worried about Cappella. and that's only based off of that information looking at his game like. Yeah it'd be great. He's a better version of Robin Williams. He's a rim protector Aram runner. I like all that. But if he's looking apart him for guy that you just mentioned I'd be I'd be cautious that Ryan. What do you think more is what do you think more reasoning is behind? Basically trying to dump Capella just to get another wing player. Like COVINGTON. Like why would he give away an asset like that. Yeah I don't think he's looking looking used to dump Cappella guys. I I think. That's that that rumor speculation. A little bit off. I think what he wants to figure out is canny take cappella get asset assets probably multiple assets for Capella and then turn those assets into a wing player and potentially a bigger replacement for Cappella You know you guys have seen what Houston's done on over the last week or so. I think they're the first team in the last twenty or thirty years to play a full. NBA game without playing a guy over six or six seven. I think Daniel House was there tallest alice player now. A lot of that is due to the injury of cling Capella who hasn't played since late January with a hill bruce but Mike the Antoni is a bit of a mad scientist as you guys know. And he's not afraid to shake things up and try some things. That are a little bit outside the box so I I don't think it's like the rockets. Just want to get off a cappella. They don't think Appel is good. I think they're calculation is can you so you know they're very limited trade assets because harden and Westbrook makes so much money And I guess they feel like Capella could bring back more in a deal then they got like PJ Tucker who really the only to trade ships. So let's explore the market for Cappella. Let's see if we can get maybe a player who can help us pick and then turn that picking to somebody else and reset it and give our team a little more depth to surround hard and a Westbrook so I was. I was hating on you when you said that the Pelicans are GonNa make the playoffs and I jumped on board after watching him live the Mike I bought a Pelican Zion Williams Jersey. I come all in on. Pelicans are they buyers or sellers at deadline. I think they're virus guys. I I think the the Pelicans are going to buy. I think well let me put it this way got. I think they're either going to hold or by. I don't think they're going to sell and you know look at the Western Conference it. It's wide open. We mentioned the head to head games that they have The the the Pelicans have against Memphis they won one last week so You know look with about thirty to thirty. Two Games left There's only about five games spread. And I think two of those games remaining are head to head. So if if New Orleans can can surge with Zion Williamson back with a healthy derrick favors You Know I. I think they'd be happy with that. And it's Gal is you know I'd be interested to get your take on this but but I've always thought that if you're not going to be like a high lottery team if you're not gonNA pick in the top five. There is some value to playing meaningful games in March and April. If you're full blown in the tank and playing ping pong balls I understand that part of it but I think for me the Incremental Difference Between Picking say eleventh or picking fourteenth. If you just. I missed the playoffs has not a significant So I think David Griffin in the Front Office New Orleans and Alvin Gentry. Certainly on the coaching staff would say. Look you know we want Zion and Lonzo ball and Brandon Ingram and these young guys playing meaningful games and everything. We can to make the playoffs..

"Terminator words NASCAR ESPN senior NBA insider on the shell pens or performance I protect your engine this winter use pens all synthetic motor oil made from natural gas not crude oil won't so in that regard we don't believe Davis is there will be much longer with this job considering that statement but when we look at next level up and you mentioned this is not a great roster the decisions made in the off season when do Steve mills and Scott Perry's jobs get a look at this point considering Steve mills is now on I think its fifth head coach as the next president of basketball operations James Dorn question and he has shown tremendous confidence and especially Steve mills whose band on the job through several different regimes president of women all the way back to the Isaiah Thomas days you know Phil Jackson comes and runs a team and then we don't see bills gets another I'll run way here as president and you know they're easy history has shown that Dolan has had our favorites clearly see bills one of his favorites and you know I'm told he has all power me now to make a decision on they would've Israel's future and you know whether you know whether they will look at the front office down the line I mean you I mean you know in these jobs if you don't win if there's you need to be a really smart front office guy said to me you know years ago you need to be either you need to have one of two things you need to be able to sell winning or sell hope any kind of look around the N. B. A. you could and and and you can look at the places where you can sell either of them and right now for the next you certainly don't have winning and and I think selling hope is really difficult for where where they are

"Trying to take a team back to the playoffs for the first time in five years steve mills came out and said the next head coach of this franchise will have to quote understand today's player because quote today's players are very different from yesterday's players my god the knicks might still be screwed with that kind of analysis going into this in a clear i think lack of understanding you're casting such a broad net then i wonder what your criteria really is to try and get this done now obviously the next head coach is coming in and is going to be tasked with trying to build around some of the young players that the new york knicks have kristaps porzingis recovering from that tornadoes el frank neale akina you're young draft pick you've got a couple of places and we talked earlier in the show about the currency of the nba going forward being these athletes versatile bigs your joel embiid your yana says you're anthony davis is and yes kristaps porzingis is right in that same vein a guy who this last season before the injury was having to start to make that transition to face of the franchise type player now that carmelo anthony had come to pass was trying to negotiate a world without phil jackson and a lot of that prior regime one that again according to our st own stephen smith the knicks are still really dealing with the hangover from look at donovan mitchell wasn't he picked though teeth the fourteenth overall wasn't that after the knicks pick eight don of the mitchell and up in utah because phil jackson eleven tom champion then master he knows so much about that ball he gives you frag neela kina some dude out of france who made the back pages of a newspaper because he scored fifteen points in a regular season game that was beyond meaningless because the nick sees it was already l for donovan mitchell is dropping thirty eight in a closeout game six against russell westbrook and average twenty eight in the play offs i here on espn radio the parallels between the nixon browns in that regard we'll be staff.

"David black i don't love david blatt but i really do believe david black you get the job and i'll tell you why because i covered the princeton basketball team the last year and the only reason i know this there's a princeton basketball connection with david blatt steve mills who's the president for some reason steve mills is the president of the next jack record on steve mills of having success with the knicks and it's one of those guys where he goes from gm the president and i go how do you justify keeping this guy around so steve mills played with david blatt at princeton under pete carroll the legendary princeton tigers coach started craig robinson who's also with the development with the knicks as they're trying to develop something i don't know what that is with the new york knicks familiarity is key having a relationship with guys is key does not guarantee you the job but it's key david black craig robinson and steve mills are played in the same princeton team could be david blot but i'm telling you the guy that i would be i write about us they hired and it's nothing against him 'cause i enjoy his mba studio show with shack with ernie johnson with charles barkley but this would be a terrible terrible terrible higher in.

"Going out about if they didn't make a pack together durant got the bill simmons was mentioning his love for scott perry and steve mills climbing invasion is a huge thing and his dream is to own the next one the honest in this day and age with the way the movement is social movement that lebron durant are taken recently with us with that terry champion video it's gotta be a little bit enticing for them to play for all african american i might not be the right thing to say but nothing wrong with that look mm oh that's the truth i mean the eggs mom empowerment of african americans in this country is something that lebron and katie are dead serious about now there's other social issues that they talk about and they put their money behind but being a black business owner at least for lebron i'm not sure about with katie i don't know if he's gotten involved in that side but being a african american business owner in this country and doing amazing things in that space we don't pay attention to it that much even though trust me it's existing and it's growing and it's and it's blown up on that side is enormously important to lebron james so you can't discount the data might be in his thinking we might not know it because he hasn't said he's not he's not going to say you can't say that that wouldn't be a fact i wouldn't discount i wouldn't either be motivation no doubt without a doubt further here teak i mean steve mills has been around the garden for long time i liked steve but he's princeton manny smart he's always been a part of a lot of losing visions etc yeah i don't know that he was making my matter of fact i was in but he's he was he's been there for.

"Scott perry took over as the next jim they had his press conference today and steve mills whose their president they what they wanted to do here in the last few days is the hit the reset button on these carmelo trade talks they felt that phil jackson had cost them all their leverage to get anything back in a deal they wanted carmelo anthony has made it clear to them i wanna go to houston i am not interested in talking about being reincorporated back into this new york roster and so what they're trying to do seed mills would not have ascended to this job in new york if he wasn't pretty politically savvy he doesn't want to get into a public war here with carmelo anthony who they spent over eur trying to run outta town right houston now is prepare for the fact that these talks these negotiations with the knicks could run through august september into possibly the start of training camp as new york tries to rebuild mello's value and threatened people with the idea that they'll bring him back to start the season so there you have it and i think that's the right move and you know you've heard me talk about the next and i get all the time i want your so hard on the next and i am hard on that x and i think rightfully so but i think this is the time that they are actually making the proper decision we're not we don't have to be in a rush we're going to be bad with them really worse without him but we don't have to do anything now for me do i think it's necessary to move on from carmelo anthony 100 percent but i'll do it at my pace if i if i am the knicks breasts.

"But he couldn't be a lotta teams these days have these rules do you wanna look at it think about even like a a team like the cubs where you have theo epstein is the president of baseball operations and then he has a general manager anjit hoyer well judge jed hoyer does a lot of work is a general manager but alternate lay its theo epstein has the final say on baseball decisions that's what the next have had with with phil jackson he was the president of basketball operations he was the guy making the basketball all decisions so that's what really is at debate right now with the knicks the debate is who's going to be that guy who's going to be that person who has the final say on basketball decisions steve mills wants it to be himself or at least he wants to be a fifty fifty partnership or collaborator if we were listening stephane bondi from the daily news that he wants to be very involved he doesn't want to give that control away and say to a general manager you're the final say on basketball decisionmaking making the thority you run basketball operations for our franchise so that's what's the date right now that's the role general manager but making that final say being that decision maker on basketball decisions that's the job david griffin thought he was interviewing four and then he sat down and had dinner with steve mills and found out that number one he wasn't going to be be able to get rid of some people in the next front office and bring in his own people and number two that he wasn't going to have the final say on basketball decisionmaking for the next that steve mills was going to hang around as as president and wanted to either have the final say or collaborate with him and that's not a role that david griffin wanted so right now what are they hiring for that's a great question can't be sure but if steve mills has his way steve mills will stay on as president of basketball operations for the next and will continue to have basketball decisionmaking in which case there'll be hiring a general manager who i don't want to say is a puppet but kind of ne the final decisionmaker twelve twenty coming up after the update john johnson may of mlb network joins me we're talking futures gained keep itunes here.
