Mayor Lori Lightfoot says Chicago expects influx of federal agents to help city fight violence, ‘but we do not welcome dictatorship’
"President Trump says he's planning to deploy federal agents to Chicago to help deal with a spike in crime. One day after Mayor Lightfoot fired off a letter to the president telling him not to send them here. The mayor says it's her understanding unnamed federal special secret agents will not be coming WCBM Steve Miller begins our coverage. You're, Lightfoot says there's been a lot of saber rattling by the Trump administration. What I understand at this point And I can't be at that is that the Trump Administration is not going to foolishly deploy unnamed agents to the streets of Chicago. As I understand it. What we will be getting our some additional resource is in the FBI, the DEA and the and unlike what happened in Portland. What we will receive is re sources that are going to plug in to the existing federal agencies that we worked with on a regular basis to help manage and suppress. Violent crime in our city. The mayor says the U. S attorney based in Chicago, John Lauch will be helping to manage. The additional resource is a big difference from what happened in Portland, she says, where the U. S attorney was ignored, and agents were part of a crackdown she called unconstitutional and
'Chance the Snapper': Chicago's Humboldt Park alligator one year later
"Chance the snapper was first spotted in the Humboldt Park Lagoon and a week later rather, a week later, his life's changed forever. The alligators saga from a year ago created two celebrities Chance the snapper and alligator rob, otherwise known as Frank Rob, the Florida man who caught chance and took him to warmer climes in Florida. Rob says he visits chance every month or so at chances home. At the ST Augustine Alligator Farm. I think he kind of gives me that stink eye a little bit. Yeah, like man. Are you that guy again? Tag Navid. If you really can't, you're back here again, so that jokingly but they they don't forget. They're one of those animals that really their memory is so advanced. Their thought process is so advanced people give up, not a whole lot of credit, because again, they're brain small. Ah, alligator. His size has a brain the size of a great but unlike they're using every single bit of it. Rob says Chance grew six inches, the 1st 3 or four months. He was at the alligator Farm. Rob's life changed, too. When he came to Chicago, he says he still has a girlfriend here. Steve Miller News Radio, one of

RED 266: The Gift Of Dyslexia
"You've read my book big podcast heard me mention this girl. Here's the quick and dirty when I was in high school. It was a girl at my church that I really liked. But she was really quiet and I didn't know her well. I just watched her and thought about her thinking she was reading my mind and somehow everything would work out but I did get the courage to call her a few times. Maybe two or three times. I don't know I was so nervous about calling her than I used to. Make flowcharts to keep the conversation going. I would say hello. Is Liz there? Okay if she is there move onto the next flow chart. She's not there. Somebody else picks up the phone. Tell her David called. It was that kind of thing I'll talk to her. Hey Liz it's David. Are you busy Friday? If she says yes ask her about Saturday is she says No. Ask Her if she'd like to see a movie. It was pretty elaborate. Because like I said I didn't really know her and I was so nervous when the great talker that I am now something else I did when I was in high school is I always had a band going. There wasn't really established. Various members coming in and out some people wanted. Some people didn't want it but I always wanted it and I had. This opportunity was a dance or something like dance. Some kind of event at my church and there were different youth groups the youth ministries of these churches. They were all going to come to my church and because I had that insight connection. It's my home field. I got us the GIG. We were going to be the band there so this girl Liz. She was going to be there and that was my big moment and the night came a walked out on the small stage that we set up the drummer. Canada's Click Click Click Click and I nailed it nailed those first chords of the song that we had written and I looked up. And she's there watching me and it was fucking awesome. I'm just kidding that did not happen. In fact what did happen. It was pretty much. The opposite drum went click. Click doom and we struggle through this cover of jungle. Love by the Steve Miller Band and the gig sucked. It went downhill pretty quickly. We managed to get through it and at the end of the night girl needs ride home and my friend. He was trying to be helpful. He was on my side. He said David can take you home. So she got in the passenger seat of my car and getting ready to back out of the parking lot and she said you did good. That was a lie. She lived on the other side of town. And I didn't have my flow chart with me so we just sat there in silence for probably twenty or thirty minutes however it took me to drive her home to the other side of town and that was that it was humiliating. I think even if they had gone well. It still have been awkward for me. There was a specially bad after such a bad night. The next day I got a call wasn't from her. It was from an adult from one of the other churches. Who was there? I met this guy and I think he was calling me because he felt bad for me and bringing this story to say this is happens when you don't prepare you blow opportunities you have people feeling bad for you. You're probably blowing future opportunities. I mean he knows what would have happened. Had I done well. There may be nothing just a high school dance but certainly better than I got that night. Better than I got the next day. You think that going through something like that I would have learned that lesson by now that it is important to prepare. I have not when it comes to live presentations. I still keep things pretty loose. I talked about my ability to do live presentations on this. Podcast talked about having a panic attack on stage some of that. Probably if I want to be honest with myself was because I didn't prepare but here's the irony. That event was the one that I had prepared for the most ever. I had been through that presentation so many times. I was ready a new the slides. I knew the content. It was changing a bit but more or less. I knew the content I could have gotten out there without slides without a script cue cards anything and I still could have gotten through it more or less. I think. Part of the issue of why that didn't work for me because taken aback. When I was doing this Gig or the previous speaking engagements that I've done my inability or maybe preference not prepare. It has caused me to be great on the fly when I'm presenting something. It's not like I don't know it. I'm just not great keeping something word for word when I was a musician. Note for note. My school career was pretty much like that. I learned how to get by based on whit based on skills that I developed because I didn't prepare based on making that forehand that I did have so good people didn't realize that I didn't have a backhand good on the fly. Good figuring out ways around things. Not Great at the brute force that it takes to memorize something or at least. That's what it feels like to me so I had to work around that something. You may know. Maybe you're experiencing this a lot of successful entrepreneurs very successful entrepreneurs have dyslexia Richard Branson great example of this. Why do you think that is? Why do so many successful entrepreneurs way more than the general population have dyslexia? One of the reasons may be. This is just a theory. It is because dyslexia forces you to work around things it forces you to adapt and you take that skill and you learn how to have adaptation to other areas of your life lots of entrepreneurs probably more than the entrepreneurs that have dyslexia have eighty. That's the same thing it forces you to adapt. I may have that. My wife thinks I do. She thinks the inability to focus and that would absolutely explain. Why can't sit down and learn songs or memorize speeches? Like I probably should a side note working in the entertainment industry of known a lot of people with Substance Abuse. Problems alcoholics drug addicts. They the same thing going on. They're very good at surviving. They'll mess things up in one way. Book it so good at covering that thing that they've messed up their extra powerful in another way. You see a lot of alcoholics integrate salesman again. Just a theory. That could come. Because that is their way of coping. And here's my point from telling you all this. All problems. Have their upside. Here's a podcasting one. You're not good at the tech stuff like editing. It forces you to get good at making mistakes or if you're not good editing. You don't enjoy editing. You sit down through a few edits. If you don't enjoy it that will motivate you to get good at delivering your message without editing. That's the big point here when you run into an issue. Look for the good. When something's in your way go through it over it under it blow it up. Go around it. We're in the middle of this right now. You may be affected by this because you are an expert trying to spread a message if you were doing that. Two or three months ago via alive setting. You can't do that right now. Thanks to Cova. Nineteen Corona virus. Whatever you WANNA call it. That is not an option for you. Not Safe option. You know what is an option podcasting? And maybe you're like me. Maybe you know the material inside and out you just need a little bit of motivation to deliver that message in a different way.

Grammy Awards: Performances, winners, highlights
"I will say this about the about the about the Grammys. It was long. I mean long it started at seven. And it ended at a quarter to eleven. Oh, yeah. That's yeah. That's really long. Yeah. And you the know you had your e. Red carpet, which I think started around noon. The get gets Seacrest out there. And there's you know, they're they're out there for three hours before the before the show so long. It was a long long night for all the people who were there. The overall. I mean, like I said earlier the Grammy's really is. Not like other award shows in that they're mostly concerned with the performances not so much, you know, the awards themselves. They only hand out a few awards during during the Grammy's mostly it's about. It's about the performances and there were there was a ton of performances on the on the show. Some were good some weren't. Like, I said for me the best performance of the night. With brandy Carlisle. Who I really like a lot. And I thought her I thought she gave the best performance. And and of course, you had you had your tributes there. Diana Ross turned seventy five and she did she did your basic Diana Ross over the top performance. And. Herger grants her grandson introduced her and he's nine and he's got like an incredible head of hair. He was he was real. He was really he was really very very funny this kid, and then there was a tribute to Dolly Parton, which was great because Dolly Parton. That's that's the one that. I I really wanna go back and watch. Yeah. It's it's you definitely should because. Between her and Cyrus working together. And then. Her singing the song called red shoes? I just you know, I mean, I love I love Dolly Parton. She's she's phenomenal. So but overall, I I mean, I did think it was way too long. And you know, they were cutting their speeches. Who people would get up there? And when they're when they're award, and then they were just like really blasting the music and cutting the speeches. Which at that point. It's like at this point man, the show is like four and a half hours long. But are we? What are you? What are you worried about the speeches for so? But yeah, I mean here are some of the winters are, you know, some of these winners are were surprising. I think. So like, for instance, record of the year went to this is America by childish Gambino, which I'm thrilled about because I love childish Gambino. But Donald Glover wasn't there. That was the that was the disappointing thing. It was like, you know, they want some major awards. One record of the year and run one song of the year. So those are two major major awards Donald Glover wasn't there. So this is America one song of the year at one record of the year album of the year went to golden hour by Casey muss graves. Who I was not very familiar with. But she's good. Best new artist went to do a leaper best solo pop solo performance went to JoAnne. Where do you think you're going by lady Gaga? Best pop duo or group performance went to shallow by lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper, by the way, lady Gaga's performance was weird. I mean, she's she is a bit of a weird. Performer in general. But. It was very intense and crazy. She was wearing a weird civil know like a glittery jumpsuit and making all kinds of weird faces and stuff, and I just was I was the little I was a little confounded by her by your performance. And I really liked the song. I mean, obviously shallows a terrific song. And it's probably going to win an Oscar and a couple of weeks for her. But yeah, she and Bradley Cooper got the got the award for best pop duo or group performance. Best pop album went to sweetener by our 'Grande, Ariana GRANDE day, best rock performance with when bad. Does goodbye. Chris cornell. Chris cornell. How did he have a backlog of of new material is that what the deal is? That's that's got to be. Yeah. What happened there? Yeah. Well deserved. Well. Yeah. Mean he was the best deserved. Best rock song went to miss education. By Saint Vincent. Best rock album from the fires by Greta van fleet. Best alternative music album was colors by Beck. Best R&_B performance best part by her. Best urban contemporary album. Everything is loved by the Carter's best Rb album her by her. Best rap performance. Kings, dead Kendrick Lamar. And bubbling, by Anderson pock, or pack Anderson pack. Best rap song to God's plan by Drake. Best rap album went to invasion of privacy by Cardi B. So I have a question for you. Would you truly consider Drake a rapper? Yeah. I just feel like he just talks over. Yeah. No. He's a rapper. He's a rapper has never. I just never hear wrapping when I compared to like, I get he's different in an hands down mad respect to him for being different standing out everything. I just compared to everything else that's out there. I just never think. It's. And he's Canadian. Oh, wow. So best music video went to this is America, childish Gambino, man. Donald Glover, man. Yeah. When in some serious stuff that video rules. It was awesome. Yeah. Or the song is amazing to chose Gambino. Hey, you know, weird Al yankovic wanna wanna Grammy? That's that's too now for squeeze box the complete works of weird Al yankovic, which is best boxed or special limited edition package. So at one for the packaging. Yeah. I like that. Yankovic? What was it was it last year was the first time you want one? Two years who years ago, but it, but it took that long. Yeah. How did how did weird Al not? How did he not have a granny? I have no idea. How does he have a room full of Grammy's? So I don't know. You know, you know, they get so many weird categories. This is the thing about the Grammys is that there's like seven thousand awards they only hand out about six of them on the show, but there's like a million awards here. Best compilation soundtrack for visual media. What that went to the greatest showman. Best soundtrack for visual media, Black Panther. That one has my vote, but I'm a marvel fan. Yeah. You know, the music the music for Black Panthers. Great. I think you know, what for all those marvel movies? The scores have been awesome. Yeah. Just really outstanding. Let's see best country song went to space cowboy Casey muss graves. I'm assuming that's not the. It's not the Steve Miller song. I would I would imagine. Best traditional pop vocal album. My way by Willie Nelson. Best country duo group performance. Dan shea with tequila. So the the those guys performed those guys performed last night. Did they? Yeah. And I don't even know. I like, here's here's another thing. Whenever I watched the Grammys or or like music awards and stuff, especially the MTV, which I don't even try to watch anymore. The MTV video music awards because I feel like I'm one hundred and six years old. I have no idea who anybody is. Like when I was watching. I was watching the Grammy's last night. I'm like, I have no idea that is I've never heard this song before in my life. Deli part partner, Diana Ross word Sam smokey Robinson. I knew that. But yeah, you know, a lot of a lot of the stuff. That's like, you know, younger. I don't I dunno. Shawn Mendez guy. He was okay. He performed I believe he performed again. I think that was also with Miley Cyrus. Yeah. It was that was what Miley Cyrus to. She was all over the place last night. I try to be as open minded as possible. But I just do. I just like for the most part. I just kind of sit on my couch, and I don't I don't recognize anybody. I don't know who these people are so three one two nine eight one seven two hundred is the phone number if you'd like to to join us. If you watched what did you think what did you guys think of the the ceremony? What did you guys think of? Of the performances because there were a lot of performances. Let's see best is ain't got bluegrass. You've got traditional blues guy won the blues is alive. And well. Best spoken word album. Jimmy Carter Jimmy Carter got himself a Grammy. Best music film. How is that? When did that become a category? I don't know. But I like it best music film. And I don't see. Wait a minute. I feel like Bowie's Quincy. From Quincy jumps before before. I heard that. I just would have gone with bohemian rhapsody. But yeah. Say. So. Yeah. And then also last night were the Bastas. Those are the British film awards. They were handed out as well at the same time. But I ended up watching the Grammys ex. I basically forgotten that the Baptist were. We're we're being handed out. That's why Bradley Cooper wasn't at the Grammys. Ironically, trying to get asylum away from him. They, they couldn't escape the off. Stephen. Trying to escape anti Jewish persecution anti-poll his grandparents were in Belarus in nineteen. Oh, three. He was in the FDR administration the force he would've sent the ships back parents back. Yeah. Sorry, mom and dad, you dirty Jews. Just identify as a Jew. You I'm distant. can identify. We did. Now is I'm sorry, it was his great grandparents just to correct to clarify, wasn't his grandparents either way they'd be back on about, okay, you guys, we'll. We'll keep an eye on this ju just a quick note on yesterday's elections were recording the nation, a little early this week, you guys, we had elections on Tuesday, and the results seemed to be like, oh, not everybody wants their version of Alexandria, Kazuyo Cortez in the primary. Did you have any takeaways from the election. Well, there was one in Michigan. The first Palestinian American Muslim woman will be elected to take John Conyers, CNN him in Italy, tantamount to election of 'em's. Great. I just think Democrats have to win. I mean, not it's not one size fits all, and I think it's been overblown. The press like, oh, the insurgent wing LA. It's basically I think it's essentially the same except for presentation. And I like misquote tag, but it's basically what does not much daylight on the issue. Agree. And again, that's what primers are four. But what you're seeing is a real despite the stories that are being pressed, I'd be very wary of anyone that tries to say that they're major rifts in the Democratic Party. I'm pretty sure those aren't coming from within the Democratic Party because it's just all whether or not you use the word, democratic socialism or not. That's kind of it, you know? But again, we're in a two party system and the Democratic Party is doing very well currently. Oh yeah. Well, the big news in a high which is still progressing, they have to run again in November. So this is a conservative district that went to Trump by twelve points. It's basically a tie and they said there are sixty eight other districts where that's less conservative. So they really have a lot to worry about and that district in Ohio. The last time I went for a democrat was in one thousand nine hundred eighty. And before that apparently it was like nineteen thirty eight or something. So it's as solidly red as you can possibly get pretty impressive. Even if they, if even if the Democrats lose in that special election, which will see it's not going to be. By more than one or two point in November arming number for the GOP statistical tie right now, and they have to wait for provisional ballots. But again, you know, I think this is why you see panic on the GOP side because you know, they may, they they, they made their deal and you know they had, they had their their power grab. And this might be the end of the line if the trends continue to crank up their voter suppression. More session if they allow the twenty eighteen midterms to be validated. Like every secretary of state in those red states, they have little placards in their office that say, crank up, voter suppression, walk it every day. It's like, and they look at and they're like, I know what to do. I feel like I feel like the Republicans right now in all these district setting up like these fake towns like in blazing saddles just so people like go and vote at some fake. Fool them November fourteen. All the clocks back. That's awesome. All right. Well, we're gonna keep an eye. Obviously, keep an eye on the midterms.
