I'm the host, Scott Feinberg, and my guest today is a stand -up comedian, actor, and author who has been a fan favorite for decades. Perhaps best known as one of the four stand -ups featured in Spike Lee's blockbuster documentary The Original Kings of Comedy back in 2000, he also starred on TV programs such as the WB's The Steve Harvey Show from 1996 through 2002, and on CBS's The Neighborhood, which began in 2018 and is heading into its sixth season. And he's also been in numerous films, most notably the Barbershop trilogy, with installments in 2002, 2004, and 2016. Back in 2002, A .O. Scott wrote in the New York Times, quote, He takes his obligations to the audience seriously, and no comedian working today holds up his end of the bargain better, close quote. He, of course, is Cedric Kyle's, better known as Cedric the Entertainer. Over the course of our conversation at the L .A. offices of The Hollywood Reporter, the 59 -year -old and I discussed his unexpected path to comedy and the origin of his unusual stage name, his occasional forays into dramatic acting in films such as 2007's Talk to Me, 2008's Cadillac Records, and 2017's First Reformed, his debut novel, Flipping Boxcars, co -written with Alan Eisenstock, which was inspired by a grandfather he never met, and which Amistad, a division of HarperCollins, will release on September 12th, plus much more. And so, without further ado, let's go to that conversation.

"Steve Harvey has decided he's not going to do another stand up comedy special because it cancel culture because people are fucking crazy. And he said the only way I can do one more special is if it's at the end of my TV career because it will end my TV career. It's probably right. He was at the upfront, which is where you go when your shows are new shows renounced ABC announced judge Steve Harvey. And he made these comments. He said, it sucks that we're in cancel culture now. No stand up comedian live. Is sponsor driven, who is sponsored or can say anything they want to Chris Rock can, Kevin Hart can Cedric the Entertainer camp DL Jude Lee camp and then, you know, Steve went down a deeper list. The only person that can say what they want to say on stage is Dave Chappelle because he's not sponsor driven. He's subscription driven. Very interesting points from Steve Harvey. And Harvey is not the only person who stopped doing stand up because of this crap. Even his wife told him, do something else. But he hadn't thought about it yet. I've been doing some thinking and One of the things that I wanted to mention today to you as one of the principles of success. Being grateful at all times. Is difficult to do. Being grateful. At all times. Is very difficult to do. I find that to be true with myself. Now there are others that might be able to do it. But just just from talking and listening and living and learning. Being grateful at all times is difficult to do. But it's necessary. Because it Zetsche an act off faith and knowing that no matter what's going on, it's going to be all right. And it's hard to see that When things are not going in your favor. When things have turned so dramatically the other way, and it seems as though you're the on Lee won in the situation where you involved with other people or someone Not an accusation against you falsely or somebody trying to do something to you Unjustifiably. Whatever the case may be What is happening to you? It does appear to you that Oh, my goodness. Man, this is horribly one sided. So it is difficult. The present circumstances oftentimes is just so pressing and so overwhelming that a lot of your energy is devoted to trying to come up with the solution for that, or trying to muster the strength to weather the storm are trying to just brace yourself to try to get through it. And in doing that, you don't It's hard to be grateful. It's hard to be grateful in pain. And I know what he is, but But here is the trick for me. This is what I've had to learn how to do, And I guess it takes practice to get here is not nothing. You just start doing right away. You gotta practice it in small increments to really get it. What I've always had to say to myself, and what I've learned to say to myself is This is happening to me because God is working me through something. This is happening to me because it's some form of tests that I have to pass in order to graduate to the next grade, and that in order to be allowed to move to the next level, this is happening to me because there's something I need to purge my life of my body of my spirit of something's purging in me. And when you purge something, it's it's painful. You know, it's like a person getting off drugs. The withdrawal is agonizing. I've been told and every documentary I've ever watched it. It's an agonizing process. To go cold turkey to withdraw toe Pull away after you've been doing something so long And so I know that this process is tough when you're going through some pain, But when you're purging your system When you when you when you having to pass a test when you're about to make When you're being made ready for the next level. That moment right in there in realizing that that's what's happening. That's where you find the gratitude. That's where I found the gratitude. I hope I'm explaining this correctly, and we'll keep trying until I get it. But that's where you find the gratitude. The second part of it is, is that God has never left me. In all the things I've done in all the mistakes I've made all the lies. I've told all the situations I've gotten myself into from being greedy and warning too much for me. At the expense, sometimes off other people. Not doing it deliberately or in a vindictive way, because I've never had that spirit. I'm not a vindictive or mean person, but sometimes in my life in warning to do what I wanted to do. I didn't totally way out the cause and effect of the other person. I mean, can I just be real with you with that? Me having towns. We didn't all done that looked it. Don't make you a bad person. You know that good people do bad things all the time. I just happened to have come to the realization that unknowingly And and not and not with Malice intent towards a person. I've heard people Looking at something I wanted to do without really looking at what the cause and effect would be on the other person. So in doing some of these things I've created situations for myself. But God, through his grace and mercy has allowed me to even get beyond that. So what? I'm saying that God has never left me in spite of myself. He's always gotten me through. So that's the other part of it to see that no matter what you're going through, you've got to understand that God has always gotten you through it now, hasn't he? That may not be the way you want it all the way you like. But guess what. You can't do wrong and not pay for that. Now that that's not how this works. That's never going to be the case. But the great thing about God is he finds one and shots at us all the time. He gives us an opportunity to stop. You know, he don't fully punish.

"More than 150. People are facing federal charges in connection with the Capitol Hill riot earlier this month, dozens more face charges and Superior Court and prosecutors is saying they'll be more suspects charges. There is a principle of success that is out there that if more people understood one of the bait, this is just one off one of the basic principles of success. You would have more success in your life. And that principle is this. The more people You helped become successful. The more successful you become. Well, the more people you help become successful, the more successful you become, because you are practicing helping you And as you do want to other than is done unto you. You know you, you, you, You build relationships. When you do that people forget in success that has to be relationships. There is no one person in this world who was just successful all on their own. You are successful and successful people form relationships. And you've got to really coddle these relationships. You've gotta nurtured these relationships. They don't just happen. You don't just get cool with people Just cause you cool. No. You've got to do some cool things to these people and fuck these people for these people to be cool with you when you need some cool. I don't know if I'm explaining that right, but that's the best way I can tell it to you. I'm just regular. You know, I'm John. Just speak like that. This This is an important principle to put into your life. The more people you help become successful, the more successful you become. You can look, you have to say to people. Hey, look, I've done that. This is what you got to do. You've got to take some time out to share. You have to share information experiences thoughts. You got to take a minute, man. Toe up. Lift. Somebody give them some encouragement. Hey, man, you could do it. Don't give up. You have no idea you you You right now. You have no idea. How significant you are to someone else. How your words of encouragement could be the difference maker today. I'm talking about. It's a person looking at you that you don't even really know. No, you're you're really know them And you see him struggling with something Just say Hey, You know what? I've been watching you from afar. You're gonna be a hide, man. I see some men. You keep doing the right thing, man. You gonna be all right? I had a meeting with the young man for the first time, and this young man came into my office never met him. Hey, has an Internet service which anybody can teach me something about the Internet cause I know little too close to nothing. It was 27 years old and he Woz amazingly bright at this. And I guess you know that it's not that hard to impress me. But the fluids speech pattern that he had about this very, very difficult subject. He was tossing around the terms I had heard. But he was actually putting him in sentences way It made sense to me. Very fluid. Very, very sure of himself when he was talking about this with things young do 27 years old. And when he got through the woman that had introduced me to him, I was leaving my office and she was gonna escort him out. And I turned around and I said young man, I say What? What size pants? And so, uh, I was talking to him and I said, Man. Let me help you out. I said, man, because let me tell you something. You are sharp, young Dude. Man, you are razor sharp. I say you've really really impressed me today. I said, And you know what young brother? I said You're gonna make a lot of money. One day, man, I said, but I want you to get your image up. I want you to. I want you to look at how you dress because you're coming into professional people's office and you talking about doing something for them and it and it takes money to make it happen. I gotta give you money to make this happen. What you cannot afford to do is look like you need every dime of his money. So you you you get when you go in there and you talking about money with another person, the person that's gonna give you this money cannot. You can't look like you need every dime of this money. You know, so you gotta start presenting yourself in. That's all I just said to him. I just said, man, but you know what you shot you're gonna make yourself some money. I'm gonna help you out a little bit. I walked out. I went on about my business. Later On that afternoon. I had a meeting with the woman that brought him in. And she said, Mr Harvey, You have no idea what you just did, he said. His eyes just teared up when you walked out, he said, while man Man don't even know me, and he just encouraged me. He's a man. I always thought I might could make it. But he said I ain't never had nobody like him. Tell me I could make it. Just handed from him, man. That's all right. I'm gonna get my clothes together, but you know, I've been homeless. And he started telling a woman that he had been homeless. And so you know, then she telling me that now I'm finna crackles. You know, I've been in that hole before. And I just I'm just sharing that story. Which all just to say You don't know who you talking to. Well, what doesn't hurt if you just extend your hand to a person and give them a moment of encouragement. See this young brother right here. He could come back one day and be a major benefit to me. Because he has a skill set that I don't have. Oh, I might be home, Mr Steve Harvey. But, hey, guess what? I don't know Nothing about what?
