"Major league all star nineteen seventy-four MLM VP dodger and Padre. Great, Steve Garvey. Steve. The other team in LA. Of course, the angels, Nate employees the best player in baseball and Mike trout and the questions linger, Steve should they consider trading trout, two years looming before free agency, no guarantee. He stays Steve. Garvey should the angel seriously. Consider trading a Mike trout, unless they know for sure they can resign them. Well, that's a that's an ownership this decision. That's probably not even a general manager of president baseball. The owner already. Marino needs to make that decision. I think my Mike is had a tremendous start to his career. And he's you know, he's he's one of the probably two or three best players in the game. And it'll be up to to ownership decide whether they want to go the full course, which I would why not he's under contract. He's been an angel. Let's have an angel as long as possible. And then he'll decide what way or the other. So I think he's he's great for the game. He's great for the angels, great for California. And he's he's quite the young man you joined forces with Amgen during blood cancer awareness month. It's a new program. They've brought out myeloma MVP. It's been developed help patients with multiple myeloma create their most valuable plan to work at the best doctors and best managed the disease. You know, first hand the impact of this this terrible blood cancer because your father in law passed away from this, obviously hits home, give us more detail about this myeloma, MVP and your involvement with it. Well, you know, how I I've always felt and being blessed to play at the level, and then to take the recognition that I've had to be able to to do good deeds with it in to to have an opportunity to be part of this project that Hampton developed this is quite an honor to work with Dave Winfield, and and Don Bailer junior. And I think we all know the passing of his dad last year. Because of multiple myeloma hits home to the the baseball community in fraternity. And and we've partnered with major league baseball to major league baseball baseball network, and it'll be dot com. We had a kickoff in in the all star time there, and the the key components of myeloma MVP and plan is that we are entrusting this disease that affects two percent of of the cancer patients each year. With the opportunity to seize control and to be able to to start putting a team together in a plan together that moving forward will. We'll give the patient number one a sense of of, you know, I'm not in this just by myself, but I've got caregivers, and I've got a doctor, and I got people that are working with me. And and developing this plan, so we can move forward. And and also, you know, knowing that people like myself care, and I think that's the most important thing lettuce times when when faced with with a disease, and I'm a cancer, you know, patient with prostate cancer about four or five years ago, and then long term remission. I know that when you know, you're awfully lonely when you suddenly realize that that you shouldn't be smoking while over patients feel this way. And then all of a sudden they start to feel that people care and then Tamsin this. This pharmaceutical company that cares is put together program, and where they can go to myeloma explain dot com, which is a great website and to start to get the answers that they've wondered about and to maybe take the question here. It's it's a wonderful question. And I started to ask you the questions and to see you know, what, you know about this disease. And then say, okay, let's let's find the best doctor for you and the caregivers that that that want to help you. And and like we always say when one person comes down with a disease the whole family does because it captivates the family pussy. Why don't we self that person? So we're on a great campaign right now, and we're trying to reach as many people. And and Dan, I wanna thank you for allowing the opportunity to to throw my best pitch tonight. So to speak, no curve balls tonight. Dan. Thank you six right down the middle. And thank you for being hit other ballpark. So to speak. No, absolutely. No, it's it's a two percent disease. So not as many people know about it. So to bring awareness to it. And I get to talk to Steve Garvey is certainly is a great thing. And we are talking to the ten time. It'll be all star Steve Garvey here going deep. Dan, Schwartzman, NBC sports radio. And Steve you're a heck of a player in, you know, a guy that played in your generation a couple of years after you started del Murphy. I don't know if you read that grade ESPN article about del Murphy. How is a fantastic article about how maybe people need to start reassessing guys like del Murphy for the hall of fame when it comes to the steroid Aaron what that's done to baseball. I think you're another guy. As Don Mattingly, who I think is very very much like you in the sense of statistics, Gold, Gloves and respect in the baseball community. You're never going to advocate for it. Of course, Steve. But do you think that guy's of your generation should get a second look in terms of hall of fame voting based on the fact, I mean let let's not kid ourselves. We know about the steroid. Erin beijing. So you think you guys are of a second. Look, I think so I think that because of the of the steroid era that started in probably the ladies and went to, you know, two thousand four where we finally put a plan together, you know, and we had rules and regulations in and you were going to suffer penalties for being caught that the players that. Did it the right way that not only were significant on the field off the field? Demised what professional who is in is in the game of baseball. Understood the the relationship between the fans and the player, I think those guys, and you mentioned Dale, and I think absolutely Don. Absolutely. And they're probably head for the guys that that seemed to be on the ballot with me in this expansion here from seventeen ninety they could easily be selected everybody. That's in the hall of fame now deserves to be there. But there seemed to be. She like I said probably six seven guys on the on deck, circle that hap- -solutely could be part of that too. Majestic group at Cooperstown. No question about it. I mean, you look at it. And it's all about power numbers now. But it's all about I think being that complete hitter more than anything else. And certainly in baseball today. Everybody loves the power, Steve as you know. And that's why as we started this conversation. Strike outs are acceptable and baseball as long as you get forty home. Runs to go along with those two hundred strikeouts. The great Steve Garvey ten time. MLB all star nineteen seventy-four nationally VP dodger and Padre. Great. And of course, in partnering up with Amgen during blood cancer awareness month on the mile Oma MVP real quick, Steve. Is there a website that people can do to get more information on this? How can they learn more about all this absolutely myeloma? Explain dot com. His the the site to go to it's our Goto site. And I encourage anyone who's who's listening to our interview tonight, if they have any questions or they may be a patient or they may want to be a caregiver or even if they're a doctor who. Who is looking for support? I would go to this website myeloma, explain dot com. And in in start the putting the team together and and start the plan and moving forward. I think this is going to be a wonderful step in the right direction, trapping everyone. What a great cause Steve Garvey preciado the time. And of course, all the information on this and just talking baseball general Steve had a lot of file you're the best, Dan. Steve Garvey, a lot of fun sit down with Steve Garvey, the ten time. Also, you look at the numbers on Steve Garvey. He's one of those guys that actually was going up in terms of hall of fame vote and they start going down. Do you reexamine guys from the seventies eighties? That generation that we're kind of pre steroid Aaron baseball that were really good players mean Steve Garvey, had what six or seven years of two hundred hits one an MVP was top six and MVP voting like four or five times finished second. I think one years. Well, didn't walk a lot. But didn't try out much career great career ninety four career hitter. Right. Twenty six hundred hits. I think somewhere in that range. But offense was different back then Mattingly. Now, would you put him in Mattingly are so similar but guard I get a longer. Manley was greater and his prime. Manley was great. That's right. That matters that does I would put both those guys in. I think both of those guys are deserving. I mean, really it's hard to keep both guys out. Don Mattingly in one thousand nine hundred eighty four to eighty seven. And definitely eighty four to eighty six was the best player in baseball. You know, Garvey, never was the best player in did winning MVP. Did. So did Mattingly multiple goal gloves. What four or five Gold.

"The all time greats baseball hall of famer pedro martinez great to see pedro thank you for having me it's wasting too that you bet so what what what memories does that bring up for you when you see that ninety nine all star start in fenway park we'll before the game i remember shaking never seen planes in an all star game flights or hello low standing on the mound and and i'm warming up when the planes will buy out the anthem i'm almost done okay up right the flight i did not expect the planes light so low and they kinda shoot me and it should be tire stadium it was like the most amazing sound i've ever heard and then just watching the all century team two meals gray it was unbelievable i remember hand current coming over and wanting to shake my hand not to me that was like oh my god this is it but it got even better because after the game the game i knew what i could do i will face in those guys doing that era but what i was able to do and have ted williams bring me over to his what he was actually there's a little bdo i don't know what it is the red sox have it where he says you one hell of a pitcher and he joked my hand and he signed the program and that was pretty much my trophy that that capped it up i think just being part of the most unique allstar game but i that i can think of how the all century player something we might not see this lifetime is probably the most amazing diff getting on all star game forget about the strikeouts get about the performance an all star game like that deserves that and probably even better 'cause i just remember that after the all century team had been announced and then the the players have been out some assuming you're warming up in the bullpen is that where you were about it will always be late remember how everybody mopped over well that was it they they asked the announce the public address announcer asked you sensually you guys to break it up be i was ready and and walk into the boop him he'll sold the late because everybody wanted to hug that williams that i had to actually hold myself from pitching something i did not like but because there was an allstar game you're flexible doing anything and if it was in a regular game i'll be pissed i'll be really anyway everybody tv and everybody but it was the all century team dedicated to ted williams to mean was an honor to be part of anything that that that happened that day if i'm not mistaken bob gibson was out there to everybody acts koufax roger clemens can't grief all the players that were from the center team and at the same time while life some of them are pass away since stained unfortunately but i really have to take part in that all star game most unico star game that we will probably we will ever see agree i agree with you patriot was there any thought of you not going to innings just doing one was there to pay pretending boston percent and ted williams i i will i will impact timing to go pitch it was it was just amazing everything was amazing about that all star game was also a learning lesson for me how so well i i i learned to keep my composure you know about forgetting about the hype because there was a lot of hype in that all star game i learned to keep my composure that delay and all that i figured it didn't affect my game the way i thought he would by someone delaying or you know throwing me back on time so i try to learn from everything i did and that was a game that really taught me how to be patient and wait for my time it's interesting you say paid pedro martinez all famer and again on mlb network tonight tomorrow from national park also enjoy your work that.

"Steve garvey ian it's a big red machine guy so he always said take a back seat to the great big red machine so i think is the best nationally team in baseball history but the you know the dodgers had an unbelievable team back then as well you know that infield was great you know you had garvey you had lopes you had say and you had russell the pretty good you're behind the steve yeager baker monday smith in the outfield was pretty good but not a big red machine not quite the bigger again not quite a big red machine all right our poll question mclovin update that i got a few tweets we're going to do our best and worst of the weekend as well okay if you could buy stock at one sports city what would it be las vegas still leading thirty five percent then boston and l a are tied at two and then filled out the comes in fourth also some people have tweeted los angeles the rams with mcveigh young stars dodgers coming off the world series angels with trout otani lakers with lebron yeah we mentioned with the los angeles but you're buying that's talk pretty high price i forgot about sean mcvay though that's a nice little chip there let's see couple of for boston blog with mike says san francisco got the warriors probably going for two or three more championships niners looking promising and the giants win a championship every couple of years eric meyer says not dc the redskins are a wizards locked in mediocrity and the nationals are watching their division rivals surpass them at least we have the caps in a few more years of ovechkin joey says about phoenix ryan greene said san diego l o l yes andy ako best worst the weekend pauling what do you have i got a couple best dan best wayne rooney making his debut at dc united i think it's a great plan they have mls bringing these guys out there tire another best this just in carson wentz got married over the weekend carson wentz and that's okay mclovin best and we're the weekend okay my best is going to be croatias fans during the final game they were going berserk it's like sec fans did you see where putin was the only guy with an umbrella and the post match cervone it is it it was pouring did you see the ceremony oh no it's getting so hard how close were they to delaying the game i don't know about that but but it felt like you know that it was right after the game and then they had the ceremony and it just started pouring and i'm looking i go one guy's got an umbrella and i go what putin has got the umbrella there he was putin on a poncho initially just go with the umbrella thank you john my worst is manny machado was pulled to the fifth inning on sunday and it wasn't to be traded to the phillies it was for no reason well they said because the infield was sloppy and they didn't want to take take any chances but buck showalter the orioles managers says you guys are smart you know why he was pulled yes for my best yes novak djokovic finishing off the doll and then taking care of kevin innocent to win his fourth wimbledon title and doing this for ten years and didn't you i thought that you thought that i had a comment on i didn't think that you thought i thought that you thought that you said it was the barracudas the siamak people go ahead checking your broken leg fake breakage in brooklyn hit my hair okay is it hits my hair ok croatia fallen just short of winning the world cup falling four two to france thank you telling you said it could have been the barracudas i said i thought it could have been where would you where would you love of seton my best of the weekend was actually going to dc united game and seen wayne ruining debut was awesome in a dc united has some good players but then all of a sudden one guy checked in like oh that's the guy wayne rooney just stands out as like he's awesome and my worst croatia not winning but saw were nick foles says it's hard to watch other quarterbacks signed those big contracts until this to peter king or i think this is in his new book believe it my journey of success failure and overcoming the.

"And i've got a few clients my advanced age and you got dodger stadium in yankee stadium for we got we kinks wind girls which we use the roles and we do try tip and pull pork and we've been a little sacrilegious we've put barbecue pork on on dodger dogs which is a smash hit right oh really and we do wings and we've created this epicenter of food and now you know it's a small thirty franchise fraternity and they heard wait a minute pervious got this places soon great this king's hawaiian girl dodger stadium gangqi is called us going great in yankee stadium finding a new spot that they're expanding at fenway and negotiating with with wrigley so we'll go well by the time next season comes pretty sure will be in the four conic stadiums and maybe you'll be in the hall of fame god willing voting's next year yeah how many more years do you have on the ballot this this expansion era you could probably keep going until all there's not a certain number that you fifteen on the initial ballot okay yeah yeah and then after that you rotate to the the different eras now which i think you know i give the hall of fame credit they're they're trying to expand the opportunities for players that may have gotten lost in the big numbers yeah the three thousands and things like that there's so many very good players and i know i could rattle off a bunch of right now that could easily match guys in the hall of fame now but if you and the guys in the hall of fame deserve to be in there it's like anything but i think the hall of fame needs to to expand and maybe even make a couple of determinations on that maybe pick a player to each year that has really made a difference in the game of baseball i mean i was a bad boy in spring training in nineteen fiftysix for the brooklyn dodgers my dad was agree i'm best bus driver came home the night before and said he wants to give school tomorrow and i said yeah what do we do i've got a charter to pick up the brooklyn dodgers tomorrow take him to saint pete to play an exhibition game and he said i think it might be a fun day for you and i and the next day here i am bad boing for the dodgers was jackie robinson's last spring nobu and hodges and resear are talking about the yankee pitcher and how he's holding the ball for a breaking ball on a fastball and not wasting time not talking about where they're going to dinner tonight but just in case six months from then they're facing this pitcher in the world series and he does this it'll be a breaking ball and if he does this it'll be a fastball and i my dad and two other gentlemen just started the second league in tampa and i was going to have my first game i really didn't know what they were talking about but i knew i picked up enough to realize they were waiting learning in that wasting time robinson sat on my lap didn't see me and literally santa my thanking monday show until this is going to be the best story they're going to hear for straight at lois elementary school but that day they went home and mom had dinner and i was an only chagas seven kids now gods ballot.

"Out cold on the pitcher's mound at yankee stadium and the highlight of my career but my parents have been from new york and you know the old if if you break down on the long island expressway or something come back fifteen minutes at car stripped doggedly frame i immediately think i got to pick up my hat here and get outta here but if i was not cold can you say me para sanitary boxers and that's it thank you say to you by the way you know what you hit minutes here's for some four seventeen yeah those see we we if feels like we help or we look at a pitcher and say what they do in the postseason not as much as we do hitter and i'm not sure if maybe we look at pitching being more valuable in the world series of the playoffs and those pictures stand out whereas you know why aren't we learnt we china in the spotlight on hitters as well and and when i speak now he talked about remember when mothers used to want their sons to be doctors and lawyers well now they want him to be pitchers think about your once a week one hundred and fifty hundred sixty million dollars yeah concave chess low handicap the take the clubs on the road right i mean it has four guys who go out every day hundred sixty two games and hot weather and humidity and so forth so did you ever have a bad relationship with a pitcher no nobody i'll tell you what happened anybody within now pfizer pfizer ridiculous amount everyone's yeah what happens dog pile ended up with dislocated shoulders and wrists and elbows in hand normally i would find my comparable guy in the other team like the last day of nineteen eightyfour we had we had three fights fulton county stadium between the padres and the braves and after the first one that that was a little you know little pushy ballet type of stuff and the next one starts and i and i look at dale murphy he looks at me we go grab each other we dance over the side we do the to step over the and we're looking at them because this guy is really crazy out there so the problem is we can't hit pasco perez who hit alan wiggins on the first pitch of the game so we have first pitcher can't do it sicker pitch can't do it now seven guys are thrown out because of you know the fights and sui so finally bringing in leifer and he finally hits pasco parents so i know it's going to happen so i run out to the man you can see i run out and i'm like this my l defensive back stance my arms out and it's like the parting of the red sea east guys come and they go around me and i'm there like this right now the second i my body for for my pitcher and i look around and left for leverage is sprinting towards the bullpen in left field so you're left by yourself it'd be a pitcher from my who do you get mistaken for oh gosh pierce brosnan's yeah are you superman you remember the christopher reeve yeah that sometimes i tell these guys the story i was working at cnn and i was gonna do an interview with you at shea stadium and shea stadium was horrible to do interviews because the planes kept going over and you know but you said hold on you just got done with bp and you go hold on and then you went into the locker room came out your hat was off your hair you had to go in and comb your hair yeah i mean your hair look perfect you tell many people this i i did i told my on yeah yeah done if i tell commercial it was my first commercial yeah but you did you went in and combed your hair and representing the national pastime you took your hat on and you're a young kid i gotta make you look good no you made me look you can make a career out of this who knew back then allocates new idea idea on eight or nine different outlets right now well no i don't know where we're somewhere we have we around yeah we're gonna get king's hawaiian now what we looked at the house yeah we love kingston one you know the buns are great they're yeah absolutely so well oboe players do they go into marketing and media consulting.

"I always thought if you and i are comparable was athletes but i'm stronger i'm going to be a better performer in in the long run so with the evolution of the business of of of sports and the business of the game you are always going to have participants find ways to cheat you talked about football at michigan state and then i started to do some research here and that michigan state team that you were on the nineteen sixty eighteen sixty six sixty freshman that sixty seven okay so they were up against notre dame that's the game of the century and ended up ten ten or duffy daugherty was michigan state's head coach air parsegian coaching at notre dame you went to michigan state did you go there to play baseball or football well i was originally contact for baseball and then they found out that i was pretty good quarterback at tampere chamberlain high school so i did my visit about twenty offers at auburn florida state miami you know one for each one though they were starting to specialize so my pitching goes in high school and played for danny lit waller who was the baseball coach it at msu but had been at florida state so i go from trip i go into the old jettison field house with the trophies and his showing all of a sudden this leprechaun of a man comes around the corner and stuff your door and he'll irishman and charming stevie isa's whereas your play football son i said they do he says you know here michigan state you can play both and we got twenty three thousand coeds guarantee we're going to get a date charming said i wasn't doing bad at the time but i i love the odds and so i came out and i had again played top level high school football in florida and became a all of a sudden nose quarterbacking first week and then they lost couple of defensive backs and and deputy says derby ever played defense they said think you have some having a citizen they will right corners afternoons so dummy me and there's up to the pass and they'd some tackles the quarterback knowledge you know and after the skirmish he said split your time so within a week i was back to being a cornerback and that was it for being quarterback but i got chance to play and we do we're just talking about it they played against any notable players and at the third or fourth week forth week in sixty seven usc came to east lansing and and give you a scouting report each guy gets about a paragraph and i'm looking at potential receivers in bags and i see this guy with initials out of san francisco city college by in a simpson had three paragraphs and they put at the end by the way they have an olympic track team and instead of lining at four and four and every play lined up for in about twelve because they weren't going to beat me so that had four or five tackles against him but people's anything memorable i said first quarter i in two on on our goal and of course you don't line up in the end zone then pets pass much at that time so they pitched the baldo jay and i'm near the goal line and ready for him and i spear them and great tackling drags me into the end zone it's down picks be apnea nice tackle when i'm speaking i say you know it was if i got hit by a white bronco and you can oh wow how could garvey something and i'm still wait i i might run for senate here you might get in the hall of fame now hopefully go for a broad base of constituents this week but i do my son's working here in congress now for rodney davis out of illinois so he's the one that's that's getting into did you think of being a politician at one time i was i was reagan republican i used to introduce the president and his campaign stops out west and new nancy pretty well and that was back in eighty eight it was it was pretty neat time you know how many celebrities would come out to dodger games who were the the big celebrities well we had the greatest celebrity you know get an entre oh all its natural come out and martin and jerry lewis and i mean it was it was a who's who and.

"In and day out competitor if you were to have a son or daughter and you wanted him to look at one player as to how they played the game you would point to pete should he be in the hall of fame he should nope no question in no problem with okay well i think that you know in this this country and pete made him steak and and he said i think an addiction to gambling and he was subjectively caught and he was suspended and banned for life and he also paid his due to society you know he did his time whether it was a halfway house jail or whatever it is and in restitution and then i think we should go back into society and get a chance again and if you're talking about gambling now yeah and we're talking about opening the gates then you should look back and say and that was the one rule when you walked into the to the clubhouse was the gambling rule and now it's other billboards have been handed but you should look back and at least give him a chance to be on the ballot future did you ever hear of anybody else with gambling in baseball nothing that tonight and then i was pretty focused i mean i had my locker room and and and my locker and i rarely knew of anybody who's taking drugs or or if they would be gambling because i was so focused on hundred and sixty two games in the playoffs and getting ready and doing my job as a everyday player and leader that i didn't look for it but you had steroids in football back in the seventies but did like it wasn't prevalent it didn't feel like it was prevalent in in major league baseball now not until late eighties why is it that did did we think that it might not help your swing or wouldn't help a pitcher they used to tell us and the dodgers you know what was in the forefront of these things i mean i actually talked him into the first nautilus equipment back in the in the seventies i mean we broke the ice with the knowledge machine right because every else was light free weights and the old term was used baseball to get in baseball shape so that was their philosophy you don't want to be too bulky wouldn't be you know lean and flexible and so forth and then the lucien really of weight training and i and i was a football player in michigan state we trained and.
