You know the arrest of food to come in and tino comes over and he gives me a hug and he's like bug guards looking down and have like he was so excited and there's one thing that took me back was like how many guys came up to me bill. Self mick cronin mark. Few guys that. I've known for twenty years guys that have seen me work and the just grind it and you just finally get to the fountain. Drink a sip. They were excited for for the pro program. Which i think i i. I was kind of like in shock about i e should be i. Don't it's like you wanna guys. No one ever has a bad word. Say about side or not. You know the head coaches get a buyout assistant coaches paint slip. But but i do think that there is a brotherhood nick robbery. It is a is a toughest job right and and it's always interesting to me on how people in my profession at times will say well you these guys millionaires and they don't care about the kids like we talking about like you have any idea what you've been doing this for twenty years. You know you're not killing it by by the it's all about the kids because if you can't get the kids to buy indian you got no chance to win. "Frank. Also hey losing the rochester. Jam said he'd never seen anyone who hated to lose. As much as frank. Herman quote family. Members said each time frank lost baseball game. A little bit of his soul was lost to. Jesus christ. yeah you know. I get it but body. It's a game i mean. Come on to have pasta on your couch and you get imagine being that guy's player get in the dugout and he's like a little piece of me died today. Well i'm not comfortable with this level of guilt boys tomorrow. Hey how about tomorrow. You as team. Don't try to kill a little part of me. It's just very hard to look at. It like died inside your. It's as a team like my personal cancer. Let's get out there and hit boys. I'm not in the mood to try to be honest. Feels well now. You know that little dead part of me feels okay all right. I think we're all quitting. So let's go boys team quits by nineteen eighty-two he is openly sipping wine in the dugout. Just get to that but you gotta reprimand someone at some point someone. You don't get drunk during the game. Otherwise he's like. I here's the plan is going to be a bottle of low and albie at the end of the dugout with a bunch of seeds and you guys got. It will make it work. Okay but the first thing is has anyone ever sees a grown. Man is approximate fifties. Open a bottle of wine with a shoe. Reggie and if you have raise your hand if you haven't read if you had a regime had raised his hand if you had about the wind question coach all know 'cause this is this is important to knows what it is and this is going to relate to the game today for and i see the i rolling it did corker is basically the catcher of the bottle and my mouth is the fastball. Okay coach so. When i opened this is a very relevant lesson in a certain amount of time. And then you get a and then if you can get the shoe under the wine and you get the core cows. You can have about other right okay. You haven't told the sues pitching okay. We're right off. The bat is that there's not going to be a pitcher today today. We're not even going to worry about that. "I'm going to sound like a little man but like with the culture. The idea that you can never criticize a decision that any player makes because these are unpaid players and they of course they should they should have the freedom eight. I'm not i'm not. i'm not arguing. That we should put measures in place to where jaylon johnson. What's opt out. We say no you have to play. Of course you should be allowed to play. What i'm saying is that i don't care what the what the statements are being. Put out from duke. I don't care what the pr spin his is on this. There's not a single guy in that locker that's Jalen johnson's like hey. i'm quitting. Which by the way did even say. Do you think the guys. I don't know if you did if you said all of his teammates down he's like hey just so you guys know opting out for their major f. There is not a single guy in that locker room. That generally thought all right man. Good for you. I i wish you well every single one of those guys. And i say this is a guy who's been in a locker room like that every single one of those guys is like what the hell man we're still. We still have a chance of making the ncaa tournament. Yeah what the hell and the idea that. He's still in the brotherhood. I don't know do do what you do whatever you want. It's not his fault as you said it's coming from the top but this is the problem. Is that just because you can't. I don't know you can't just let you. There has to be some sort of measures in place. There has to be somebody that's like i. I don't mean measures like like laws or rules or whatever. i mean. there has to be some sort of like counterbalance like someone gets in his ear. And it's like this is a bad move and did that doesn't happen. I think like as a whole college basketball players five star recruits are coming into college insane. Like i i. I i i catch myself sounding like an old man. I'm gonna shut up but like it's so frustrating do because because you can't criticize anybody or people think you're you're attacking the kid. I'm not attacking your kid. I'm just saying every so often if the kid wants ice cream for dinner every single night. It's okay to sit him down be like that's not good for you. At some point. You have to eat your brussel sprouts. I'm sorry and this feels like a like. I don't know and jimmy johnson look at coach kane said but i had hundred and it just frustrated because the same thing happened with no gel easter painter who ended up being right and all that i don't know i guess nosal eastern will probably play like iraq for five years and then make it onto a g. league team get minutes an mba. Never wanna say suck matt painter. You were wrong all along but i. That's what frustrating to me is that these guys are in happened to whatever i'm getting fired. Let's see the last thing if want to talk about the what's best for the player. It's this is not in a vacuum and it's like the nba. Is this like you know little system where they can just like suck up the town and say hey. This guy's six nine and could be this type of player so therefore you're automatically a lottery pick. There are people that make basketball decisions in these front offices that you and i both know and if they see you quit on your team. There's not a single. There's no that's actually good for him. Preserving is bottled. This idea that he's doing good for himself is said if his injury is genuine if he's really worried about his foot. That's a fair concern. I would support the idea of not playing the rest of the year because you do. You do have a life outside of this shitty duke basketball season you should. You should take these take precautions. Yeah but you can do that and still be on the team. You cannot turn your back on the brotherhood. You cannot clean out your locker. You cannot like their ways you could go about it and just like i'm done for the season but i'm still going to support my guys. It's okay if you come back lose like coal anthony last year tours. Meniscus surgery comes back to carolina team that had lost seven straight. Ac games gets blown out in the tournament but guess what he goes fifteenth in the draft. Because the magic say. I like the guy obviously had no help. So i'm gonna take a chance on this kid so the fact that there's this weird perception that the nba has just always going to be there and they're going to see your talent and they're gonna make a decision just based on your talent is insane to me screw it. Let's talking about christian. let's do it. Let's do it Good guy the week. Is jim christian. Free ice ooh yes. It's pretty easy And i said this as we were joking on the intro. But as soon as the news broke jeff goodman a good man himself put out the jim christian you know was in fact very good guy and was making a terrible move by deciding to fire him in the middle of a pandemic. But if we go back you know. In june they get a new. Ad from temple crafts is his last name and craft at that point in time. The that's why you had. We had him as our good guy. Christian there yeah. I was wondering if we were to show any pictures of them on the big screen here. Because yeah i mean sure. That's jim chris. They've had some some moments. They've had some players during his tenure. He was there for seven years the longest since al skinner and when they fired al skinner there was this weird. You know kind of moment of like they're gonna get some big co they're going to get some other bigger guy and take this program to the next level. Obviously they go to know tournaments jim cushion. And you know the head steve. Donoghue steve donoghue comes in his whole idea was like i'm going to recruit kids from california and bring them to boston college which i don't think that's ever worked. You know what i mean. And i'm not to say but anyways so we get the whole picture of boston college. There's idea that they're going to go for a very splashy higher. But the jim crow era is going to be the best version of a quote unquote good guy. Our definition of it because he did not do anything of note really there literally. Nothing literally literally beat duke. That one time with jerome robinson. That's probably the dow steve donoghue. That was steve..

Jalen johnson jimmy johnson jaylon johnson jerome robinson fifteenth five years jim crow seven years last year Christian california jim christian college steve donoghue jim chris steve five star both jim cushion coach kane

"Yeah look you know you. Just you want to call superstition routines rover shirt. No like i'm still to this day. Man i hit up. Katie brought back left knows and it's almost like if they if they broke and it's working well aware percent. I'll care what it smells like but it looks like his numbers jittery knocks a barrett roll through. But i got a tour from yankee stadium. Once i took dirt from the field and just carry around me the rest of my own row hundred percent man. You know my biggest thing was you always try to put yourself in that right mindset of exactly what side clinton and so for myself when i would always do when i get ready for the day director batting practice. Whatever whatever whatever was hitting from. That day i would put that sock on. I know pumps hitting right here. That day i put everything all on the right side. I at big saw. You know what. I'm saying and vice versa. That's just because i'm i'm a little quirky cutaways of why you did well. That's the only reason why some mail had nothing. What's the weirdest like slump busters superstition thing. You've come across in your career. We've all heard slow bus restores offered about those. I definitely i can honestly say that. I think i've been. I have been part of the greatest slop. Buster ever and that is with the goldenthal hall and i was able to wear that goldenthal and there's not a lot of people that have having honored put that golden song around everything that they have one of those guys home saying that three of the world series man. I got bitch game too. Steve donoghue came to you need this and he was assistant trainer. Tom as any what needs to fuck it. Hits browse what i said this. This is golden dog bagley route. And i'm like oh my gosh. It was almost like that was the moment right. Because it's a real story real thing. Yeah remember right. But i went from one of the worst seasons also game three bronco two for four with a double in a harbor and after the game i wanted to keep it and not give it back row. It's a one time able to wear once up about that. No i you know golden thong. But i don't know people know that that should credit the game three success and at that point in time our put into malibran lose. I mean whenever you want me to put all the garters all ross. Searching for a hit new backward now has really led to four. that's it remember that restored a couple runs. You remember that. I was cruise around the next working lot less weight. Down this nicholas. Was this actually incredible by days change. I'm feeling like this made my entire day. I can't thank you enough for coming on here. Thank you for everything. You dump the yankees where you're going to continue to do as you gotta 'cause i'm i'm better as a person now. My wife outlook has changed. I can't thank you enough. Want me to be on this bro. You know let's do this shit again. This man it's easy talking to ready for real when this is all you gotta do it in person. Let's do it minute. I'll meet a boy. As i have in at continued success for you guys make keep kicking ass brought great man. You send you my swing right. Now i'll check it out dogg. Everybody thanks a lot of them. Aren't we now. welcome in a guest. I don't know when we start the coach. I ever think we'd have on in his field whatnot. We're bringing in garret reisman. He's a former nasa astronaut. He's currently a professor of nautical engineering at. Usc is isn't advisor at spacex. I've this is. We are way out of our territory here but this is what no baseball bring us. And we're excited because we had weta questions about space ago. So what do we do. Bring on a fucking astronaut. So how's it going man. Go great how are you guys doing had. This is the only reason. Why join this podcast for this view. I needed an astronaut ob. So i don't understand shit about the world. I have no idea about space. I'm so excited. I met a lot of assets. It's really no big deal. The first question that really sparked all this with a couple of weeks ago when we run out of things to talk about baseball we bring on random topics. And i noticed a google search that we just have the united states has not been back to the moon since one thousand nine hundred seventy two. Which seems insane that we only made twelve trips up. There was one of you could shuttle a light until why that is actually. It's pretty simple as money. You know the program was really expensive spending. I think they don't land is being this this. I think it was about like ten percent of our federal budget on on these days. We're spending less than one. Half of one percent of our federal budget on nasa nasr's budget is really tiny. We're spending a lot of money on apollo to pull it off back back then and the appetite just wasn't Continued to spend that kind of money on space exploration missions planned and we had more you know on the drawing board to and they got cancelled because of because of the cost about and in basically a lot of it was we just wanted to beat the russians to the moon was a geopolitical thing. We want to kick those guys butts right and when we did. We were like okay. You know we won yay yay team. And and that was that so It just wasn't sustainable. That level of of the cost. That's crazy but something that recently just happened with. You are big. Part of was obviously the launch of spacex dragon which is an awesome name for a launch that type and from what i understand was we were using russian crafts that just go back and forth from some space which is just crazy so now the dragon basically is gonna change all that right yes. That's what's so exciting is that this opens up the possibility from war exploration into space with in a sustainable manner. You know in in much more affordable way just by the design of the vehicle the fact is operated by the private sector is a lot of reasons why this will really drive the cost down which will open up the possibilities to do more with that one. Half of one percent of the budget that nasa has right so so we do more with less. And that's all. I gotta ask questions. I i went to mississippi. And i felt like i was in a different galaxy. You literally went to space. How do you come back to earth. It's like Us go to the store and start making a burger..

"Yeah what do you look? You know it's like you want to call superstitions or routines again so for sure. No I'm still to this day. Man I find it hits Katie. Keeping up my back left. No saying it's almost like they pay broke and it's working. Well aware I'll care what it smells like what it looks like. Ralph is putting up numbers very but I got a tour from Nike Stadium. Once I took dirt from the field and just carry around me the rest of my hundred percent man. You know my biggest thing was a switch hitter you always try to put yourself in that right mindset. Exactly what side Clinton from and so for myself when I always do when I get ready for the day ready for batting practice. Whatever whatever whatever hitting from that day I would put that Salko. I hit right here in that day. I put everything on the right side. First at the vets saying vice versa. Pops a little quirky anyways. We why you did well. That's the only reason why he did had nothing socks. What's the weirdest like slump? Buster superstition thing. You've come across in your career. We've all heard. Slow busters stores up cash. We've all heard about those. I definitely I can honestly say that. I think I've been. I have been part of the greatest slump. At the time I was like any what needs to hits rows what I did and said not you Bill Brown and this is golden. Dog Is bag liberal. And I'm like Oh my gosh. It was almost like that was the moment right. Because he's a real story to real thing. Yeah remember right but I went from one of the worst seasons also game. Three broad two for four with a Dublin Harbour and after the game I wanted to keep it and not give it back. Bro. It's a one time so resolves able to wear about that. No I did you word. At least I mean I know you know the Golden Thong. But I don't know people know that that should credit the game three success and Sorta at that point time I will put anything Bra lose from Albro the garters Ross searching for backward. Really that's why he went to for four mats. It remember that Russian couple runs through remember that long cruise around their necks working a lot less weight down this. I wonder what that full list is. The people who were in that. Gong's obviously giambi nate wrought at posing that golden phone comes out in the worst moments threat individual. Obviously for myself couldn't have happened better time because he completely turned thing around. We gave three. If you remember game. One Cliff Lee. Put It on us. I don't remember who was hitting but he popped up said all right you remember that like a slap in the face rover sure but how do they get swept at this point because like what? He's doing this shit his own. Remember Jimmy Rollins came out was like hey phillies in five. The whole grow and grow up their classrooms every game keys performance. That turned everything around her Jesse out there. That was crazy. Cool raising the energy and the stadium was out of control and that was like it was like it was like almost kind of had that. Odette he said you. You're saying it was almost at that moment. All the old Yankee Stadium Ghost came over to the new stadium and Alicia Keys. Let's Go Jay Z. Along route originally. I re watched that whole series during corn. 'cause I've been nothing else to do. I don't know why you guys kept picks pitching Chase Ali. I've never seen someone how he met. Jason Worth Grow. She's free in fact it was crazy. We told me home run. It was one of these you know. The Muslim are tape became a hero. That's series right. He was shut down. Ryan Howard huge man. But that was like Kinda like I was almost kind of like right at the end for for for Ryan. That poor broke. Is that right there now? He hit balls in the stratosphere. Just one of those guys and solely powerful God lineup. Pedro Felise. We break in that series. I mean Jason. Worth was doing. His name is right before he got that twenty. Six right man. That's good cliff Lee and we pulled it off. It was in the cards for us. Man What was your favorite part of the celebration after the winning. We'll I can. I can honestly the cool part of the celebration was the sound the sound of the stadium when that last ground ball that jammed out of victory. No right to know over to share and all of a sudden. It's almost like every there's a sound that that make the stadium makes that you can't you can't replicate and you kidding. Explain exactly what it is almost like. You know what I'm saying and it was sold out and it was you know it. Come two thousand eighteen. Go to play offs for almost unheard of it was almost. It was almost like one of the worst seasons ever to one of the best seasons our as an organization and I think we were all so proud to lean on each other everybody art. There was a lot I mean. Milky Cabrera had a monster year that year. Right I mean Romney canno- I mean he's anyways still. I mean like there were so many things that happened in that season and it's all his life could be. You're talking about that a hundred percent. I will begin the rep up here but I do want to get twenty sixteen. You come back to the Yankees during the minor leaks change here. What is that so obviously? Now you're the special adviser but was there. You're like okay. I could see myself in the future. Like you're mentoring these guys a little bit. Yeah I mean if you look back on it that that year two thousand sixteen was probably one of the coolest years for me because I got to establish relationships in the locker with the baby bombers right Gary Sanchez. The World Eric Judges of the world right. Jade caves in Minnesota. Right breath gamble in Seattle. I mean like so many studs on that Severino and so for myself. It was almost like I was the guy in the locker that Tom and so to be able to develop relationships with those guys it ended up helping me out so much moving forward. Because at that time you're still thinking like eight minutes shop for me like I. I just want to get back for one more day. I just wanted to run out to write one more time. So that's that's on the forefront of your mind but as the season progresses you know that's not GonNa happen and you know that you're not going to have the ability to run back out there anymore. So then something shifts and for myself shifted. It'd be like hey man. Swish is not all about you. And as athletes you're so used to pin about you. You have to make sure you get your rest. You have to make sure you get the ballpark at the right time. And all that stuff so for myself. I was just kind of like. It's not my Tommy War so I need you. Try Your best trying to help these guys moving forward and then finally our second daughter sailor was born and I remember calling cash. And I'm like I'm not going background. I'm crying man. I use just one of those Dan. How saddest moments ever? Because it was almost like being a senior in high school. And you know you're not playing Yup and taking that Jersey you know emotionally right there on the phone with Brian Cashman and then all of a sudden I get a phone call a couple of months later. I can't Egypt cash what are you? What are you be Broadway for you? I need you to be part of our organization and I was like Man Komo blow best. Why something asked to be part of New York? It's like that does happen. Most you don't need a once. I've got twice the prime and the love that I have. That organization brought just runs so deep. It's like all the things that have happened to us during this Kobe. Nineteen people we've lost from. Hey you know even you know from everybody is like we're such a tight knit group. Anthony as well. I mean we're so tight knit that's why this organization is what it is and that's why we in these championships because the infrastructure of the organization so tight and love in a passionate everyone that works. There has easy to go to work when you work for the New York Yankees. Because you know what's expected of you and I think that's why we stay top because people expect US win and that's exactly what would be ready to a brick wall right now when you went off for a second. I said I'M GONNA run. I'm like go out his house. That was like the Yankees should just have that little monologue right. They're playing throughout the halls Yankee Stadium. Bromide it's crazy man. It's like Brompton. Low pump grow from Parkersburg West. Virginia I went from house to house is out of control that somebody like me. I was sick myself. Why Me Right? Like why was Albuquerque? Why did why did you pick somebody else? Somebody else get that opportunity. But I was fortunate guys and I don't take for granted at all because I know that doesn't happen too. Many people and so people are always like Bro. Why you smiling so much? I've done everything I've ever wanted to do. I'll fucking thirty nine years old. Rahmael oppy in life right. I got two beautiful daughters right like my life is amazing so like I'm only going to do my best to bring such onto the world and if somebody else needs help that Brian just call me up and Marty Rob your coffee in the morning dress. I'm calling I'm Elliot. We have a whole intro to the show. They get fuel pump up. But I'm just GONNA delete it and we're just GONNA put that little stroke working nick. Swisher pumping you up every morning. It'll be coming when you hit that. Ground disaster though no doubt going to be a little group chat going between the four of us and just Texas every morning. Zooms right over truths probably read? So you're traveling with the teen will a bit last year during the Houston? I know Minnesota but was it. Houston as well. That was like the first time that I've been able to do something like that. And obviously that was such a great run obviously stop by Houston but still like the honor that you have when you're sitting in how steinbrenner sweet watching the Yankees and he's asking your opinion on something I'm like I don't think anybody else wanted to my idol. What an unbelievable gift and and for myself. That's why take that job so series because I want them to know that I had that same love that passionate Beijing because come overall I house in now and he wants to win. It's been a minute now right. I mean New York itching for another winner and I know how to give that and I know Brian Cashman was well. Listen that you want world series Joe Torry I want World Series Joe Girardi and your day and win a world series with air boat so to be able to have three great managers like that under his belt during the time. He's been there as a general manager pro. Come on twenty years. The General Manager for the New York Yankees. Come on like that is a hot seat your asses off all the time you know for myself to be able to work for a man like that and to learn from a man like that. That's only going to help me move forward in whatever I WANNA do baseball. We didn't know we were really sad to see the Indians. We have to thank you because realized that the draft pick we got for you was out in Judge. Jodi always give it to the Yankees to walk. They'll give it to the BRO for real thought out of you and judge. I've gone up to and be like. Hey you're welcome. Judge you matter of fact just had his birthday the other day on the phone with him at somebody. I've I've kept in touch with man is just I guess I'm more proud of him as the way he's handled himself as a human being even more than I have has. How has player? It's almost like you knew what he was going to be able to do as a player but the way he's handled immediate way. He's been a leader for that team. So waste leader for his friends in the locker. It's like those are the little things that make somebody who they are and Aaron judge has those qualities everybody does not. Everybody has those great qualities like that but for somebody like Hugh Man. It was almost like written in the stars from John Street. Right from the day he was born and brought him his family's life in something. Great going to happen to a kid like that because you hear what he speaks. I. It's almost like I want my daughter's every time he speaks to listen came at listen to this guy because this is what you should be. Li- giving back it's never about him always never speaks individual always about the team..

"The idea Joel like maybe The the result of one thousand nine hundred no more spitballs and two thousand twenty there will be more handwashing. Who's to say? We can only hope we can only hope. Also you know Disinfecting Your Hotel Room. Something I've I've been doing for the last few years. You're ahead of the game. Yeah 'cause that's why I get into it man now. It is time for after balls and we mentioned at the top of the show. That Galen rupp one of the men's marathon trials on Saturday. The second place finisher was Jacob Riley. This'll be his first Olympics. Rupp got the bronze and the Marathon in two thousand sixteen rob and Riley have something in common. They both had surgery for a haglund. Deformity reminds me of Our old colleague. David Haglund who I think did not have a haglund but the Haglund deformity. Stephan is a bony protrusion. On the heel can lead to problems that one gets from Bony protrusion irritation and kill easier. Tation they have to detach the yield from the Achilles and shave down the bone. Oh my God Sir. But this is inspirational. If you have a haglund deformity you can come back from it to make the Olympic team in the marathon in the marathon. All Right Stephane. What is your Haglund deformity? On Friday night in New Haven Connecticut the Penn. Men's basketball team played set. The stage here crucial weekend for the quakers. One game back in the race for the fourth and final spot in IV madness. The Leagues Relatively New postseason tournament. Yale came into the game of first-place eight and two in the league. Twenty and six overall the Eli the bulldogs or whatever they call them. They've been the most consistent and talented team. In the IVY's this season there was even talk of a to Bid Ivy if Yale lost in the final of the tournament Penn though already beaten yell at the POLENTA in Philly. They had a sweep in the bag on the road up. Seventy three sixty three with the ball. One thirty nine to go. Here's how things went from their pen. Turnover foul yell. Free throws seventy three sixty five thirty eight to go. Penn missed free. Throw Yell Three Pointer. Seventy three sixty eight penn turnover. Yell missed three Penn Turnover Yell Layup. Seventy three seventy five seconds to go penn turnover yell free throws seventy three seventy to fifty one seconds to go. Penn missed layup. Gail missed layup. Pen turnover yelled dunk. Seventy four seventy three winning thirteen seconds left Penn turnover yelled dunk. Seventy six seventy three five seconds left Penn turnover yell turnover. Pen missed three game. That's seven turnovers. One attempted free throw and two attempted shots in the final minute and a half that began with a win probability of ninety seven point nine per cent daily Pennsylvanian Student newspaper columnist Theo Papa Zachos called astounding and probably the worst minute and a half. Penn has played under coach. Steve Donoghue I'd go further and say it was probably the worst minute and a half and has played at any time under any coach pens. Choke job even married at a recap by a young Youtuber who posts literally from his bedroom. He'll spin craziness unfolding boom sauce sauce. Boom SAUCE INDEED HISTORIC COLLAPSE PARTY. Pooper Josh Levin though actually me about historic collapses after that insane game in the two thousand sixteen. Ncaa tournament where Northern Iowa Blue Twelve point lead with about a half a minute to go against Texas am Josh. We pause on that. I I guess they blew a twelve point. Lead with like a little bit more than thirty seconds to go. I think that is under appreciated as one of the most amazing sports feats in history getting there. It was pretty amazing Josh. I was going to credit you now as having written the definitive account of blown leads and NCAA men's basketball. I am comeback. Does make the yell. Comeback looked like it took ninety nine days and not ninety nine seconds. The aggies miracle broke a record of eleven points down in the final minute. You reported Caniggia's beating Louisiana Monroe in two thousand fifteen. Josh also listed some other crazy comeback Duke down ten with under a minute against Maryland in two thousand and one Miami Down Ten Virginia with less than forty seconds. Twenty ten Ilan down eight to Kennesaw state with just sixteen seconds left in two thousand fifteen and North Carolina trailing duke by nine with seventeen seconds to go in nineteen seventy four. Which is even crazier because there was no three point shot. Then all of those are what Bill James in two thousand eight piece in slate identified as safe leads that were blown. James created a formula for figuring out if elite is safe. Take the number of points. One team is ahead subtract three and a half point if the team in the League has the ball and subtract point if the other team has the ball square that if the result is greater than the of seconds left in the game the lead is safe by that math pens lead against Yale ten minus three plus a half seven and a half squared fifty. Six point two five was not safe so it wasn't historic but as I pointed out to Josh it was historic to me and I wasn't even watching the game just following. The increasingly frantic twitter feeds of the daily Pennsylvanian an Penn basketball. So if you're fan of either team involved in a game like that or a player on either team obviously will be instantly graft into your long term memory. It doesn't matter if it's a five hundred team trying to finish fourth in the Ivy League. Or the Atlanta Falcons in the Super Bowl. The fail at Yale joined three other very sad moments in my pen basketball long term memory. One unbeaten and third ranked Pan losing to city rival ninety two forty seven in the nineteen seventy-one NCA regional finals. I was very small but a brother was an Undergrad. The time and I could name the starting five and saying the fight song to losing to Michigan State and Magic Johnson. One hundred and one to sixty nine in the final four in nineteen seventy nine and three blowing a twenty seven point. Second half lead to lose to arch-rival Princeton fifty to forty nine in one thousand nine hundred ninety nine but there are lots of good memories. That is what makes sports.

"What's what's happening? Welcome to another edition in other short porch presented by Barstools. I'm your host hubs sitting alongside me in studio the Vape God himself the classic cloud. He's spotted stool stool team six now. Is that what it's called timing smoke fix with this thing new hottest squad out on the street and now he's pals flocks team ten. The all better watch out. We've got to record it seven in the morning now because UFO Eleven you take three hours and work for like two or three hours three hours now every day. And that's right when we records now you also so. I think I'm a little less than last week. I can't just I more. Needless fuck you. Well we recorded via skype so it's not like I got you sick but yeah I don't know like I said it's six season but ready ready to talk to me. I've scheduled my first doctor's appointment in five years types of doctor will be next Wednesday. I'm just getting a full. Let me know let me know. I'm always scared like I don't want to know what it is because I eat so poorly and like I live my life my lifestyle. It's just not it's not good. It's not conducive to a twenty six new newly twenty six year old. But I need to know what's going on because I don't feel great and I know something's wrong so get some blood work done. Yeah I'm GonNa have it all everything. Just give me the whole the whole the whole run through and then hopefully maybe a week. You'll find that if I'm undying or not if I'm going to be your death. Fueled a world series Yankees. Ron would be as we said the willing to sacrifice you for that. I'd also be willing. You Know Shit my sister trough whatever whatever it takes you know what whatever it is as you cough Well I'M GONNA try to conceal it. Okay very nice. We've got some. We've got a lot to talk about actually A lot of come through The first we're GONNA get to we. Finally it took way too long. I mean not way too long is that they understood the whole investigate they. They went through the whole investigation and they got all the facts. It seems like Deming Armand finally suspended at that's eighty one games. Eighteen of those retroactive to when he sat at the end of the twentieth nineteen season and then he sat out the playoffs. They don't count those But he'll be out for the first sixty three games of twenty nine thousand nine. He's not appealing You know the Yankees. They're all agreements. Seemed like something really bad happened here. The the alleged rumors that he slapped because his girlfriend or wife girlfriend his girlfriend after this. It was the night of the C. Z.. Gala whatever they believe it was after a lot. It's a lot of people saw it still. No charges filed which is very interesting. And that's where like I was. I agree with like I think domestic violence. I have no tolerance that shit like. That's there's no room for that anywhere so you know it needs needs to be severe it just crazy. There's no charges filed here. That's just something that like. You come down to eighty one game suspension. I mean it's very clear something happens. Just no no one knows what happened. Actually yes weird. I mean if you're just making the suspension based on how terrible of active is and how should he was a person that moment so you think it should be longer than that but I mean look fans were like Oh this long enough. They didn't do as much time investing as the MLB did so they looked into it. They compared to them sure. To pass cases they looked at the fact that there were no charges filed. And I'm sure you know this wasn't just pick out of a hat eighty-one right sixty three without thing but I mean they looked through witten decided that this was what the punishment should be And you know that that's what it is. I mean we judge them for it but that was suspension is and. Yeah so he'll he would have been now talked to baseball side because this is a baseball. PODCAST he would he was probably GonNa be the fifth starter. And if you put them through adding Garrett Cole helps because he was one of the best pitchers last year by far I mean he wins on the staff and and wins. This wasn't like Oh we have winds can be right but no legit. He was great. He was fantastic. One point I wanted to start the all star game. He was that good that you tell. He got hurt and then he came back and he was better after that but they can survive without him without question. I mean you're going to probably have a guy like Jordan. Montgomery step up ideal. He he steps up you know and he showed a lot of flashes during his rookie season. And he's like he's an innings eater and I think he's he's in a comeback motivated and he's he's ready to go and he sat out all last year up until the very very very end So He's pretty much going to be in line here for that fifth fifth spot. So is Mike King. He'll have his chance maybe Clark Schmidt Susan on the forty man yet but I mean that's the guy's GonNa be ready to go real really soon Debbie Garcia waiting in the wings. Yeah less writing them. I think those other guys obviously but but I'm starting to get really worried about him. What you keep saying that as if things have happened it's just been the offseason every every day? That passes them just like go to sleep and I think like many teachers can reliever like I don't know maybe I'll wait. What his deal is like is he another Floreal where we just hype him up too much and he just isn't that good? I mean he did rise through the ranks better than for Floreal definitely Floreal had trouble progressing for sure w was just flying through and the potential Debbie if he actually is a bona fide starter is like and we have a number one and number two waiting So it remains. You're seeing but Debbie will have a shot as well and J hop residue on this. We should have a segment like is Jay HAP- stilling Yankee. And the answer is yes. I think Nike's need like I think some people were saying the Yankees could add another starter. I don't think they you need one. I think this reminds who says that. I don't think nothing really people can like. Oh maybe they add another. Starting pitcher wily necessary is going to say I think it is too especially Ashley with the hormone suspension. Isn't that long. I mean it's two months sixty three games so yeah I think in the meantime you definitely have enough arms to do it but fully on Gumri smidt bigger shift closing here. You need that so I think this I mean they're. They're like eight deep. Yeah if they they went from like nothing to having everything just the difference of one guy that how good that one guy is straight down bumps everyone down all of a sudden savvy to pack your three Tanakh as your. It's like wow. I think this is awesome. I will say also her mom last year came into a little promise innings innings limit. All that right. That's not really GonNa be an issue now. Now he's going to miss in sixty three games. He's Cook Fish and more than one hundred twenty eight hundred thirty right so like he's going to be. I mean you know this is bad and you want to have the whole year but like when he comes back you know there's really not innings limit issue with him and that always runs into with young guys so that's I guess the silver the little silver lining here is like there won't be an inning something with him obviously very bad. I really hope that Joe World there was gonNA suspension and no. It's also like yeah. He's out sixty three games. But it could. I'd be more than that like if he needs Rehab. Whatever it is man like take your time Figures off that because clearly. You weren't in the right state of mind when you did what you did and I have a weird feeling like if you did that and if you do something public right you can only imagine only imagine what's happening behind closed doors. I WANNA get intense speculate but I just hope he gets yourself right. Use It dumps stupid thing to do horrible thing to do to never never put your hands on like that. So hopefully himself out and gets himself right and he takes his time seriously and then we get to bring her mom back and you know everything's good from they're moving on so this whole this whole Yankees. All season has pretty much. been a dream for defense if you go into this offseason. You'd say what you'd say. Well we need our coal when he Garrett Cole Sangare call come forever Larry Raja. He stinks guile go. Guess what he's gone. They brought him map lake whose future of pitching. He's pitching of the future of like the Yankees pitching. He's the future pitching. Everyone will follow what he does from here on guys just be called like Blakey one. Yeah Blah map. Lake walks into a room. The smartest man there without question everyone stops they start Merman. She'll like Oh fuck. That's the guy yes. He knows how to pitch. He knows he knows how to tell people how to pitch. He knows that he can whisper. He's a pitching whisperer. That's what he should be. The pitching whisper expert which is called an addition whisper families. So we got map lake dream. Come true there the first Garrett Cole Fire Rotschild Guys Better Watch out who does analytics knows everything. Bingo Bongo ago. Perfect then the training staff next part just what we have too many injuries and then one hundred three games so crazy one hundred three games games. You don't WanNa like no one's going to give the Yankees credit for winning hundreds of games so many injuries they had but like was it was one of the greatest. I know Aaron Boone. Not when he managed the ears. Yeah absolutely same but They didn't win the world series so no one gives a fuck at the end of the day but if you want to take just a regular one hundred three games division that by that much one of the greatest compliment compliments in baseball history. It is sure any team I think with that many injuries finished third fourth. It shows how deep crazy crazy but don't want to do that again. It was nice and fun. Let's let's actually have the guys at the whole year. What's up? Luis Severino the entire season. Let's have John Carlson the entire season. Let's Aaron judge the entire season to match those guys to say if there's any silver lining to how bad last year roads. It's like my expectations or Solo Solo. Now like having our favorite players for like two months out of the year is almost like the expectation. It's crazy like if any of these guys are most of these guys play hundred forty one hundred fifty games. It'll be unbelievable right and all we kept saying we. We always like to tie the offenders in here because that shit but oh you really like doing that more than me. But Fair okay. I may have roped layered Majok. Yeah you're a big jock then you cry yesterday. During something I was filming I was in character. First team six got oh so only intact with remote. Fuck you But I said it was like a soul stone anytime some would come back off the isle. We'd we have to sacrifice someone that go on the it was just we can never just get someone back and be happy about. It will always be like Oh holy Shit. Aaron Hicks Back. No He's dead now stands unstuck back and forth back and forth. It'd be insane so we have overhauled the strength to get the best possible who. I didn't even think like when it happened when if you have to be this. This is awesome Erik crazy. The Guy Cruzi sports who we have this mystical place that we interviewed interviewed people who had gone there it was it was awkward. Or Yeah like what goes on in this place and now the Yankees has hired back guy just to over there like we've had enough of this bullshit. Let's just take the best possible. He's working Max Scherzer. He's worker Corey. Kluber map. Lake came from there. Some sure map lake when he came over he was like listen guys. You got me now the next part you gotta do. You gotta go get Eric. Because he is just this guy who knows everything he knows how to work your body ready in the right ways. It's the perfect. Hire A. He's taking over. They only they only fired one guy from the the whole department and and it was this Guy Matt Krause. He was the head strength coach. He's he was like Oh and December the only guys fired Steve Donoghue the longtime head trainer. He's been reassigned so he's not fired so it's nice. He's he's been on the organization forever. That seventy eight or something. He's going around seventy nine seventy nine a start in the minor leagues is promoted. The major league staff and eighty six and he's obviously succeeded Gene Monahan in two thousand twelve. He and he won a most distinguished athletic trainer here by the National Athletic Trainers Association. Seems like the the best awards you can get in his apartment. I remember when I was younger. Like I'm a seven or eight. I always thought he was the older one. The Jean Monnet could never just because he was. I'd also get their names wrong. I would say that's that's no idea But that was just obviously when I was very young but they they broke Christie and I mean they. This is as good of a higher. You could possibly make an department. He knows was the way like he the whale. You're talking to Cameron Zilly. WHO's a pitcher who trained over the map lake and he'd just like the the real the tecoma with that interview was how he said he'll put your like it's not like He? He knows how to throw the ball differently. It's that they just they train you in a way A to maximize your physical abilities like they end to not get her and to be safe like Giancarlo Stanton like that guy feel like trains to heart right..

"Better. You mentioned Brett Gardner before. And that look with all the bodies coming back, he's clearly losing playing time but comes through today and drives in the four RBI's get some big hits. How important is Brett Gardner to this team? And even in a different kind of role. He's so buydell I to the fabric of that clubhouse. I don't think I need to tell you that guys loved him and to watch him today. Basically try to run away from trainer. Steve Donoghue after he got nails on the forearm to see him play with that busted lip. Even those kinda funny how he did it, you know, and to see him talk after every big game or after every series to kinda give give fans a state of the union. Now that being said, how's he gonna play going forward? What's what's his place? I'm going forward. And what does that mean for him member in spring training when we're talking about, you know, how are they gonna get brick Gardner into the mix? You don't wanna play him every day because he's, he's not an everyday guy anymore. And then, and then this this season he's gotta play every day, and he played something like forty of the first forty five games of the season in center field. Yeah, that that's going to be the guy up. So I bet you in brick ordinary, he's on one year deal, maybe this last season. Maybe he says, give me the off time. Can use the off time? Maybe I'm really beat up. Yeah, you're right, that it may have been a little too much exposure. And as a lake game defensive replacement sometime starter potential pinch hitter. Pinch runner all of that still an important role for, for Gardner Cutty safe travels, my man talk to you soon. Lori. Thank you so much for having me on. Good night. Eleven oh one. Here's p MAC. "Here is the three two two glacier, Taurus. Song on granted short. The long throw to first base is low and. Ted Barrett called in safe. Barrett is the crew chief who was at first base today. He called him safe. The raise ask the buyers that go to the replay the confirmation came just seconds later. He was safe and that would make it an eight to five game the hustle, and that's what it was pure hustle on the part of labor Tories with that infield. Single now to put the game, basically, out of reach. We know the geo shelhah early in this game had a foul tip that really hit where it hurts. If you know what I mean, right, the jewelry box. He was down for the count for a couple of minutes, where Steve Donoghue had to come out, and they gave GIO shila a couple of minutes to get his breath back and you, you could tell even when he finished that particular at bat, did or shallow that he was very, very uncomfortable. That happened in the bottom of the third inning Tiro Estrada came in four or shelhah, and it just so happened that he got an back during this long eleven of better rally. Here, the bottom of the sixth, inning and Estrada, would give the broom its own name here as he would clean off the vases grounded fair all the third alive. The left Beal corner has scored Morales has scored. Taurus has score. Pinch three run double the. Tiroler. Strana. He's been magnificent since he's come up from triple a tyro strato basically put the game out of reach with that basis. Clearing double, it would make the score at the time eleven to five and really took whatever air still inside the loans of the Tampa Bay rays just knocked that right. Out of them. You probably had a thousand times this year about boy how unusual or all these injuries. But I do want to ask you about the process because I've been thinking about this knowing you knowing Steve Donoghue, of course, your head athletic trainer about the process that you guys go through every day in sort of working through this information when something comes down. How do you hear about it? I typically, you know, sometimes I'll get a call. But typically, you know, I I when I get to the ballpark every day usually one of the first things I'll do is on my way to my office. I pop in and I'll see Stevie Donahue and just kind of check in with what what we've got in in. You know, hill hill inevitably walked down to my office with a he gives me a sheet of what the rehab guys are doing and what they're going through. And. Anything that might be coming up on. Fortunately, he's walked down their way too much so far this year. But that's typically how it's worse usually on the road. He and I will typically sit down at brunch. Together. We have a big team brunch. That's a few hours long where guys trickle in and out and typically Stevie, and I sit together and just kinda go over guys and talk through guys casually and just.

"What's up guys? Welcome back to the. I'm your host yard rogue, Andrew. And for today's episode. We're back on my buddy. Jack running a recap going on what's happening around the league. Because a lot of good stuff has been going on especially this past weekend. But before we enter that if you're the night tunes. Make sure you subscribe China sound the pod net. Makes you follow us and shadows to our sponsors hit factory baseball baseball. I saw a one and a special shadow tour guys over there at rock monkey if you guys seen on Instagram at the yard work posted a picture. We got a couple of t-shirts couple, hats, and some stickers and rock monkey. They're doing everything. Right. The clothes are comfortable. They look dope. I mean, you'll be to any summer barbecue in this apparel. And it looks fresh I love rocking it. And makes it even better is I love this story, and what they're trying to do with the brand the doing everything, right? These guys they want to help make change in the world. And every purchase purchase. You make ten percent of that goes helping people get clean water in need. And they've helped already over six hundred people say ten percent chain is everything and their hundred percent right rock monkey you're doing it. All fight say one thing. Everyone is go check him out man because you're not gonna regret it in these guys. They're good people and they wanna make change for the world. And now let's get into the recap. All right. So like, I said I'm here with my guy, Jack, Jack what's going on brother going? I just I was saying like thinking about it. And like, I have a little brother named Jack. And I was like hearing their brother, Jack. Which he doesn't hear you. He's upstairs right now. We'll just gonna we're gonna keep going keep going. Yeah. You said isn't here but say like we were doing some kind of recap. What's been happening the season? I think a lot of stuff has happened the past weekend or like five to ten days or so so I think we're gonna have some good stuff to talk about stuff. Lot of new London. New new faces in the big leagues right now about the lot. Lot of new faces specially for the Yankees because we really haven't talked about the injuries. No, we haven't. And let's be honest. The Yankees are playing with AAA boy club right now. Yeah, I think that's very safe. But. I think pashmina great job building farm system because the Inkster still winning somehow yet I mean, thank goodness of the of seen obviously tremendous amount of injuries from the start. It was bad with you know, Hicks, Severino deal and Didi and since then big offers have gone out gone out at some point Sanchez was out for a bit judges out ends out. But you know, what I think they've been saved by some of the guys. I mean, you saw Clint Frazier. Who's obviously on the L come out and produce offer a few weeks air. I think the big story. Lance to be Domingo her mom. I mean that guy has been been dealing. Yeah. I think do everything that's could go wrong for the has been going wrong with the players injuries and stuff like that. Every now and the the fans wanted to season to start off at least, and like it sucks because it's not even like the players are just not playing well and angry fans it just. When your guys are just physically not even out there. I mean, it's it's really frustrating especially because looking at the Yankees record in their their eighteen fourteen. They're they're both five hundred they're doing pretty well. They had a nice like six or seven game win streak here. You got to imagine like what they could be doing with all their guys on the lineup. Like, holy crap. I know do literally have a Yankee starting lineup of guys injured who would be starters. We haven't. We haven't even seen we've seen what STAN one game. We haven't seen heck's judge has been out for at least has been over ten days. I feel like you could you could create an all star roster of Yankees at are literally creating author author being keys that are it's it's unbelievable. I've never seen anything like it. And I'm I'm a little bit. I'm scared for some of some other players are healthy guys like Voight and glacier because it seems like there's some kind of bad luck going around the Yankee clubhouse yet. I mean, I don't know what it is something in the water, man. Hugh, I might be hopping on the the fire Steve Donoghue bandwagon. Fire the Yankees head trainer. He's been with the workers Asian for a long time, but feeling like, you know, medical practices change like maybe needs new trainers with some new treatments in there. At the interesting, you brought an actually heard a little while ago that the Yankees have like not been or were I don't know who wrote this could just be biased. But the Yankees have not been keeping up with temple workout stretches and like preparation in spring training. Some other teams do and they're kind of more old school with a and I wonder if that might be a problem if they're not keeping up with the times, you're trying to keep advancing their therapy. Is that a result of players not being able to handle the playing every single day? I

They went away from Kate Smith doing the seventh inning all of a sudden. And I mean, this isn't good, but we should go back to Kate Smith. Was there a problem with that? I didn't read about that. Did. Yeah. Rides. Yeah. Who is the who's the guy was on Casey Reiter? They're talking about a some old gut. Fuck I can't remember some old guy. And they found like quotes from all the sexy, really bad guy. Did that happen Kate Smith was she like a racist or something magic it? I can't imagine Kate. Smith was a bad person is not seem like a very nice lady. From the words that I hear from her in the seventh inning. But. I bring her back because what you know, this isn't working. They have the same issues as last year digs act same issues. Nothing has changed. They cannot hit Reuters. And scorn position we talked on the last show. It is continued then extra days. Nothing has changed overnight. Their approach at the plate is abysmal abysmal. Who is to blame? Why is Marcus Tim still here? So here's my I agree sort of with that. But at the end of the day like their pro hidden, what is Marcus Tim's how much different can he change these guys? You know what I mean? I don't know. But I'm willing to find out. Yeah. I agree. There's no reason to not fire them at this point. And just bring someone new just to try to do something. I mean, besides Fathur only six games into the season. But I mean, they're approach. I I don't wanna blame Marcus. Tim's. I wanna blame the guys they're actually up there taking the hacks. Their approaches are awfully would think they would have learned don't, you know, you don't need to hit a home run every bad out there. Pull a DJ LeMay who take the ball to the opposite field. Do whatever you need to do. There's not doing it. They're falling into the same. Exact things that cost them the season last year. And they also have a million goddamn injuries to go on top. Now, I want to say something, this sucks. We all. We're all frustrated, and you tweeted out we're allowed. It's his okay your fan. We lost two straight series of the fucking Orioles. And Tigers at home to start the year after a long long long offseason that we deal with every Red Sox fan chirping the shutt- of us and they route to you do that when you win the World Series. So when you start off season like this after you hear all the shit spring words, it's like they're locked in. They're ready to go and obviously injuries, you cannot control. I mean, it's just this is just really really really bad. Luck Ernie somewhat someone we got a fire Steve Donoghue stop refined wherever Ray Ramirez situation hand happening, but you have a right as a fan to be very fucking pissed off right now when you lose to those teams like we are right now where he just today was lifeless his lifeless as gets it was like no one knew the start time not to bring that up again like last year. But like it. It was miserable to watch that team. Play baseball today miserable. You have a right as a fan to be very pissed off M I, panicking, m I worry long-term. No. It's six games in men. We started nine nine last year. One hundred games we got blown up by the Marlins. Remember that when we lost the Marlins by one hundred runs it was like twelve remember that that game? Right. It this isn't there?.

"Get closer and closer to selection Sunday less than ten days away and teams are trying to improve their stock by the day. And by the game a team that is right on the bubble and is trying to get back to the NC double A tournament or the temple owls. They are twenty two and eight coming off a nice win on Thursday night at uconn. And they welcome in UCF UIs ranked in the top twenty five coming up Saturday at the Liacouras center at four PM eastern. We had out to the campus of temple university where I'm a proud alum. And we welcome in a man that I know very well he's in his final season as the head coach of the temple owls, and that's Fran Dunphy who's kind enough to join us right now for a few minutes on CBS sports radio. Coach always honored to talk to you. Thank you for the time. And how are you? I'm doing great sex. Thank you, buddy. Well, thank you for coming on. So let me first start you off. And I know you're focused on Saturday and the match up with UCF, but this is your final year at temple. When you get a moment to reflect on your journey at temple. What are some of the memories that come to mind, and what is this year been like for you with your last go around with the owls? Well, this year has been terrific. We've had a good year. And obviously we have a tremendous game against UCF to look forward to hear. They're they're a terrific team. So that the challenges absolutely right in front of us. But I had a wonderful time at temple. It's been great. I'm gonna continue to help teach classes here. Maybe we'll do one on my own. But we'll we'll see. But and whatever else I can do templates been great for me to me as was the university of Pennsylvania. So we're pretty lucky guys. Check have you got an emotional this year have you reflected or is it all business still looking at what this team could still accomplish? Yeah. I don't think I've thought one bit about this being my last year. A the only time I have is when the other teams have decided to make it make you out of it before the game. And you know, give me something a plaque or a baller. You know, doesn't golf balls or whatever it happens to be I've gotten some very nice things. And and it's been very nice, but certainly not necessary and. And I'm I'm worried about shows Austin and Ernest the plaque the senior year and how well we can do. And it just speaks to the person you are. But you see some of the coaches that have reached out coach Brett Brown. Phil Martelli who we know. You're very close with Steve Donoghue as well. And also, Jay, right? That has the means something extra special one people that are adversaries of yours or even people that are in the NBA take a few moments to send their well wishes coming down through the final games of the season. Yeah. It's been terrific. I'm very appreciative of it. So I've had a chance to watch some of those things and see read some of the things that they've said so very flattered by it. But again. The thought that you have or with the president guys. They they deserve every every ounce of energy. You can put in to make this year as good as they can be friends is my guest right now. It's at Gelb show on CBS sports radio. You played college basketball at LaSalle when did you develop the interest to become a head basketball? Coach you grew up around basketball you played basketball. And then you went on a long journey to become a college basketball head coach, but one did you realize that that was your calling in life to teach young kids and be a college basketball coach? It wasn't a lifelong desire that I had my old high school came to me and said. We need a new basketball coach at my immediate response was well, I hope you get one. It wasn't something that I wanted to do or had to do anything else. But when I got into it. After my fourth year as high school coach, Mike one of my old teammates at LaSalle asked me to join him as an assistant coach there, and I did. And then from that point on it was nineteen seventy nine that was something that I I just truly enjoyed -joyed beat around the student athletes, and and the college level it was great. So I jumped in the in the rest of the been lucky enough to be a head coach for thirty years, which I never would have predicted that I'm quite sure when you are so well respected in your profession, or if you just have a college basketball head coaching gig, you constantly have people reaching out asking you for advice. What was some of the best advice when you started to develop this interest or developed this quest to be a head coach that you were able to receive people close to you or people that you reached out to I think always it's the same active. Everybody would tell you. It's you gotta you gotta work hard. You gotta be yourself. Don't try to anybody. He'd be as natural as you can be. Never make it about you. It's always gotta be about the team and the kids and those kind of things so I was taught that early on. And I watched some great guys in the world coach the game. You know, I spend a couple of years with Gary Williams, which was really enlightening for me to see how well prepared. He was not only for the games, but every single day in practice. He was so ready to get on the court. He was gonna out work every every student athlete out there. But it was going to be for their benefit, and he was going to make them better. And he certainly did he had a hall of fame college basketball coaching career, which is something that I'll always take a step back at admire because of the way he worked out driven. He was. And there were many others as well. Let the urban gave me a chance that I'm so grateful for that speedy Morris gave me a chance. So it's those kind of things that you remember forever. When you got the head coaching job that pen, and then years later got the head coaching job at temple as you're at Penn from eighty nine to two thousand and six head coach. And then you got the temple job in two thousand and six what are your member about both those days when you were introduced as the head coach of Penn. And then when you're introduces the head coach of temple a little different. Of course, you know, when I was introduced as the head coach at panic. I remember a couple of days before when they called me to tell me that I got the job at the first thing. I did was call my mom and dad because they knew how proud they would be and we've got pretty emotional in that regard. But when I came to temple was it was a different thing. It was an opportunity a challenge the change of venue. I always very fearful that was very. Apprehensive yet, I thought it was the right thing for me to do to succeed a legend that that's not what we are taught in our profession to succeed a legend. But Cheney made it so easy for me. I'll be forever grateful to him for that in any job. You could second guess things you could have regrets. Is there anything that stands out to you anything that you would have done differently or do you live by every decision that you've made an in college basketball? Yeah. Pretty much that somebody asked me the other day. The only regret I have in all honesty is that I couldn't coach a healthy trae low for the last three years. And that had nothing to do with me and my decisions that had everything to do with getting hurt in a car accident. But I just love the kid. I love is is way, and he's such a wonderful guy and to have him be hurt. And not be able to be the best college basketball player. He could be just stinks. You know? Because of how wonderful guy is and how good a player he could have been on the way out with Fran dumpy the head coach at temple in his final season with the owls on Saturday UCF at temple a big game. As UCF is ranked twenty fifth in the country and temples trying to get another win on their NC double A tournament resume their twenty two and eight on the season. You've obviously face the nights earlier in January lost them seventy eight to seventy three how do you view that basketball team? And what are some of the adjustments that you're trying to make from the last go round? Well, the last couple of games that they've played at Houston and at home against Cincinnati have been I think a great statement by them of how good a basketball team that they are. They've got every aspect of the game down to a pretty good. At this point. They're their defenses. Outstanding. They're holding teams to load percentages shooting. The basketball they're keeping their point totals down there. Doing a great job rebounding. The ball taco fall is absolutely a force. Now it used to be he was forced on defense. Now. He's also force on offense. He gets you in foul. Trouble catches the ball ten feet from the basket. And it's just one quick step, and it's a dunk as a formidable foe. And he's not the only one on that team Colin Smith is playing well BJ Keller's preseason player of the year playing. Well, while we Dawkins is doing a great job that good guys off the bench Chad ground day on Griffin. Frank Burge came and did some things for them last night. So we're we got our hands full, but really looking forward to the challenge. But we we got a tough you're gonna have a tough road ahead to try to get points. And we're going to have to do a great great job on the other end also helps when she says that performance that he did have on Thursday that was some performance up against Yukon. And you probably need another one of those coming up on on Saturday to get a victory, right? Yeah. I think so I mean shows was magnificent. He was just a special basketball player last night. It's that's what we need to meet the need to be working at see if we can't get him off on the right foot. But that's going to be charged at UCF is gonna say, you know, we're not gonna let him hurt us. Like, he hurt the Yukon, you know. So that's where you know, the challenges are the adjustments have to be made in other guys who are gonna have to step up last one for France dumpy, the head coach at temple Gelb show on CBS sports radio whenever I talked to a coach who is in a final season with the team, or we know the end is coming always like to talk about relationships because we know this sport and college basketball is all about relationships. And yes fans and even players the coaches, they'll remember the wins and losses, but ultimately coach, you know, this. It's about the impact that you make on young men's lives through a four year program, sometimes even five like you've done at Penn temple and other stops along the way, I just how about that aspect of it because sometimes fans and talk show host. We we lose the relationship. Standpoint often and how you do change people's lives and improve them day by day. I I don't know how much we improve their lives. They they certainly have the many ways their family and their friends, and those kinds of things one of the things you you talk about all the time is is, you know, you're you're really not here to be their friend. You're here to be their coach. And and we'll have great mutual respect for one another. But I think coaches are so demanding that it doesn't allow for a great friendship until they leave the school. And until you you're not asking them to give every ounce of energy every single day, not only on the court, but it classroom and the community we have so much of these guys. So it's hard to have a great friendship. But once that that their careers are over now all of a sudden it just kicks in and you're going to their weddings..

"Your here. Stephan. What is your shaking space station, the Penn men's basketball team defeated defending NCAA champion Villanova seventy eight seventy five at the polenta in Philly last week. I watched on ESPN it was spectacular. First time. Penn had beaten Nova in sixteen years novas first loss after twenty five straight wins in the big five big five Penn Nova, Saint Joe's LaSalle temple Penn is nine and two and I predict will get some top twenty five oats, go Quakers after the game. I was dealing with former hang up and listen intern. Max Cohen who's a sophomore at Penn. Now, he sent me a story from the paper about how the Quakers are. So gritty that after every practice coach Steve Donoghue awards black metal lunch pail with a box of Quaker brand grits inside to the player who worked the hardest that. That day. It was all about putting in the work. And I thought the lunch pail was a great symbol of that Donahue says the story pan is indeed a disciplined team because you know, they didn't out athlete Villanova, and while the Stanley lunch pail and blazoned with stickers spelling out pen, and the very idea of grit are gigantic cliche. The whole thing works the Quakers at least before the season were totally into competing for the lunch pail lobbying coaches to award them a lunch pail. Posting pictures on social media of them with the lunch pail. That's because team props totems and free shit. Our sure ways of getting players to work harder. Feel better about themselves and bond. I've mentioned on this show. Power bar, the longtime mascot of my girls. Soccer team the power a Barbie dressed in our team uniform that girl received after every practice and game, which then would decorate a slightly more famous example of the team totem is the university of Miami football teams turnover chain. Chain the turnover chain which Josh has well documented here debuted last year and was instantly copied to lane turnover beads, Florida state turnover backpack SMU turnover crown and chalice at cetera. You can buy a replica of the twenty eighteen model of the turnover chain from the university of Miami bookstore for ninety nine dollars the forerunner of all of these awards is of course, the game ball. I asked my friend the lexicon for and word sleuth ben-zimra to help trace the origins of gameball Ben quickly dated game ball to a nineteen thirty four story about Wisconsin's win over Illinois in football. Excellent. Final score seven to to the game ball was given to Milt comer. Wisconsin's doughty little senior guard who savage tackle of fro shower in the last seconds made him fumble and prevented Illinois from any chance at a late touchdown, then then founding nineteen thirty story about the captain of. The Burlington Vermont high school basketball team receiving the game ball after the seahorses beat Barton to win the state championship. It's hard to say for sure that the citation reflects the modern sense of game ball as Mariam Webster defines. It a ball such as football presented to a player or coach in recognition of outstanding contribution to a team victory because the winning captain might have just been given literally the ball that was used in the game. Which was a thing that people did winners kept the game ball. But there is earlier evidence of the game ball being given to honor outstanding player after Harvard. Princeton sixteen to six in football in nineteen twelve. And this definitely sounds like the game ball origin story a recap that appeared in these Francisco Examiner and other papers noted how the captain of the losing team traditionally would surrender the game ball to the captain of the winning team in this case. It was Harvard Percy Wendell following the usual, custom. Him. The ball would have been retained by captain Wendell until the close of the season. And then have been accorded a place in Harvard's trophy room..

"Braun is here, gene mcmanus's here. Michael Kornheiser here. Nigel is running the board. I think we have a customer walking in fantastic. He may have. Metro. Yeah. Which way to the buoy. Put them on. What's he doing? So anyway, there's I want to open with this. I will get to I will get to the dinner that I had last night. Celebrate Tori dinner for my daughter. Elizabeth birthday. We'll get to that in a little while. But after the dinner I walked back. It was at the palm. I walked back to the building where we do the show. And I went to get my stuff to go home. My car was in the garage. It's about three blocks in half block, something like that. And while I was in the building the televisions are on all over the place in the area. So I happened to notice there was a game at the palestra this game. At the palestra pen was involved pen was playing Villanova at the police. I have a great soft spot in my heart for the police Joe, which I went to many many times soft spot in my heart for the university of Pennsylvania. Where Michael went to college and Penn was playing Villanova now Villanova has not lost in a big five game since two thousand and twelve the big five for those of you who are not familiar with Philadelphia basketball, LaSalle Penn Saint Joseph's temple and Villanova. And they play each other every year everybody plays each other. They have big five championship Villanova wins. All the time. They haven't lost in twenty five games in the big five since two thousand twelve and for good reason, they've been national champions twice the national powerhouse. Nobody else's a national powerhouse at the time that power right at the time that I walked out of the building the score was fifty eight fifty one in favor of Penn with about seven or eight minutes to go, and I called Michael, and I left a message. I said, I don't know how long is it gonna last? But this is on TV. And and you did what I. Immediately turned it on I texted list because I was walking up front steps at the time. And this was reminding me a lot of the Duke Yale game from this weekend. You'll only was there for a half figured pen put up a good fight. But even with I turn it on with about six minutes left. They would they would slowly crumble that did not happen. Pin wins the game. Penn has in the last pen was old and forty one the last forty one times they played ranked teams. Oh and forty one pen was when I was young pen was a national powerhouse the former my former classmate in high school, Stephen Pearsall was the lead guard of a team that did not make the NCAA. But one the ivy's, you know, the pen in Princeton were national powerhouses St. Bilski, my friend who was the former athletic director for many years at the university of Pennsylvania after athletic director GW he was on a final fourteen. He was the lead guard on a final fourteen. Penn was good. But this is is. It's forty five fifty years ago. This is a long time, which you know, when that forty second game was when you say, oh and forty because I'm guessing every year, they get one of the two Villanova maybe a temple and then one in the tournament that mainly that's years and years, it's a lot of years. So I love the pa-. I love looking at the palestra. So this great win for Penn. Now coached by Steve Donnie, Steve Donoghue. He's finally back home right seved on me was an assistant to to Fran Dunphy friend. He's a great coach Fran left about nine or ten years ago to go to temple where he might he might be able to recruit a little bit differently than he recruited at Penn sewer cooed, Philadelphia and might be able to little differently. He's had moderate success. I on balance he probably had more success. Penn bullpen went through a series of coaches, some of whom were alums and great players and never worked out. Steve Donahue, left pen to go to Cornell as a head coach. It was great. Then went to BC was bad didn't work out a BC at all. And is now back in the Ivy league, which is like JT three very successful at Princeton should probably be an Ivy league coach of Penn get Steve Donoghue back. And so it's a very for me, very warm moment..

"Already said, look adhere to they. They wanna maintain a five star experience. We want guest here to a certain dress code throughout the resort, and we had a policy clearly posted at the entrance which prohibited speeders, but upon receiving guest complaint review the policy and of changed it wo- so they changed it for this guy because of this guy, you can now wear speed does at the encore beach club, which is good. But as I was looking for the story because I was looking for the video, then he posted the videos, gone his video of talking about it and and showing it's gone. I, yeah, no, it was there. And if you didn't download it and save it, it's gone. So you saw the pictures on the blaze TV of how of how Chris Donohoe looked at the wind. But as I was looking for the video, I came across a story that I think looked like the same guy a few years ago at the Miami Dolphins game got kicked out of the stadium because he was he undressed. It into his dolphin Speedo. Everybody has their, you've got the Green Bay Packers Speedo right. It's too hot out. It looks like the exact same guy. Come on. Fascinating. That is no name in the dolphins story. Okay. They're just, you know, they wrote a big story about. A good look. Thank you. That's why I wear them so often. Well, you know, around my pool at home and then it usually at the public pool. Different colored one. Yeah, they're usually where the black, understated at home and then the red, the bright red around the public pool. Such a good look. Good. Look. Jiffy did research you didn't. You didn't say that say that your exciting Green Bay Packers. Pedo, let me save that all the Packers game days that's game day. Okay. Yeah, that's forget even in the wintertime when it's nice and chilly, it doesn't matter. It's game day. If you go to the game. It's gonna keep you warm. You've already, you've already. You've already painted already paying painted your body Speedo on. So once you get there, the park has got to come off. Right? It's time right. Came time. Mr. Turk Speedo time. If there was ever a time that you thought to yourself, I need to get a smoker as a smoker that cooks meat, not human being that smokes or an animal that smokes tobacco. This picture has been making the rounds on the on my social media from Sean Ness. He posted this photo saying, I got a tear in my eye. Finally have my own parking spot and took a picture of this in his own parking spot now. And I believe that I'm going to get a smoker soon. The fat guy who owns a smoker parking spot now available across America, and I am excited to. I gotta get smoker, man, there's no doubt about that last night during a Yankees, White Sox game major league empire. Bruce Dreckman stopped play headed to the dugout and had the Yankees trainer. Steve Donoghue take a look into his left ear. Now, the trainer had a cotton swab his hand and appeared to be sticking it into the left here. Then the unpire Dreckman reached into his own ear with his left hand and pull the unpire pulled out a live mouth that flew into. His ear stop play. We've got some of the pictures, the still picture. He went into the dugout and they tried to get it out. The trainer tried to get it out, couldn't get it out and then just kind of pushed him away and put his hand up there resent pulls it out and it's still you got camera still alive. I mean, the announcers talked about like when he called timeout, runs off the field and the players and the other umpires are like he's only the second base on fire. We can. Wouldn't keep playing, we'll we don't eat him and they kept playing. So the announcers that keep going back to them in the dugout in the announcers are recalling a story of another player that got some bug in his ear. You know, some few years ago. I mean, you're out there in the middle. It happens from time to time, but this was amazing because it was still alive. And I mean, he finally just push the trainer away and gets pulls that thing. Moth is just still flying man. Gosh, that's really weird. That really is. And if yes, thank you. Now, if there was ever a reason for Bruce or you to clean your ears after.
