"He was talk 7 60 wjr the Paul W. Smith show substituting Steve Courtney. Once again we welcome you into the Christmas Eve Eve edition of this here, Paul W. Smith show on 7 60 W. J. R Dub enjoying some well deserved time off Steve Courtney once again thrown into the mix. Despite the vote as the dub sub nice to have you with us. We are surrounded by some darn good friends in the new center Corey Osborne Marie. Good morning. In for executive producer and Thomas. That would be good friend. Dave Rieger. David. Morning, Steve. How are you? Everything is Well, Try and tone it down there. Dave, Wait, wait. I have a question for Dave Davis. Did the markers arrive? Yes, they did yesterday. Yes, I wanted. Yes, I should have. I should have said your tax myself. Jess. I was worried about it all afternoon. Yes, I'm sure you were Reza Warrior. The sharpies did arrive that as a gift for anybody. I just needed some sharp. Okay, Steve, your Your gift is in the mail. With the rest of the male. That is a running late, but it's but it's coming to you, my friend. Finally enough that we gave Dave a lot of grief yesterday because he happened to make me talk about packages being late and he mentioned Oh, yes, you know, I ordered some sharpies and they haven't arrived. And we were like, Who the heck are you giving Sharpies too? And we just did not let that rest So I'm sorry I interrupted your introductions there, but I had to sass well, the traffic center will just Bring on Mr Rich Lisinski Rich. Always a pleasure. Happy to be here. Steve. Greetings and salutations. He was in on the roast yesterday morning to of day. Yes, Oddly enough, most oddly enough, there could be a relative. Of Dave saying, Geez, I hope Dave, Uncle Dave comes through with the sharpies. I asked. But you know what? Here we are a couple of days. Away from the Big day Christmas Day. 2020 on dit is going to be a little bit different, just like Thanksgiving was normally at this time. You've got people traveling all over the place and we have been told That is not a good idea. But you know what? It's one of those deals that people are going to do what they're gonna do. Uh, let's ask the panel, Marie. I know you have a Sizeable family. Do you have intent of welcoming or going somewhere in a controlled environment? No, you know, no, we do. Our daughter was able to come in from New York. But she and her husband have been quarantined for two weeks. So And they drove in. So we feel we're very confident about them being in our home. And our son is also coming over and he lives locally. But he also you know for the last 10 days has not been a you know, Matt. Been in contact with anyone. So we feel pretty calm Everything else. I mean, we usually have 20 people are so if not more running around that now we had We shut it down and we're doing drive by gift exchange. So Just the way and we're not going to services which for us is a very central point of Christmas. So for us anyway, that is, and that makes me very sad. Well, David, I have worked with you throughout this Detroit Lions season. I know you and your family enjoyed a wonderful Hanukkah season. But that was different in and of itself. You know, there was there was just one evening when we did a zoom thing. Um, for my niece's birthday is on Christmas Day. S so I will see, um her, but the it seems like with my sister in law's family, it's always big on Christmas Eve. Christmas Eve is like a big get together and that's not happening and they're not coming into town. From Ohio, like they usually do, and the big celebration that they have with her friends and their big family. That all has been counseled also, and they'll be doing I think, just like kind of like Marie, like a drive by gift exchange. But, yeah, it's ah, It's pretty sad. I was talking to Kevin yesterday about what it's like to go to midnight Mass. Because there's a church that's right by the condo where I live, and that place is packed all the time, and I gotta believe that it's gonna be hard for people. That are going to be able to go either to midnight Mass. Or I know they have on Christmas Day. Sometimes they have a service to and but probably not gonna be the same. Well, everything is virtual these days. And I know some parishes are offering that others, by the way, are offering limited seating that you have to call and make reservations for crying out loud. What Iris does you have to have Ah, Rosie to get in and but it's easy. Everybody's easy. Everybody's Happy to do it rich. What do you got going on, sir? Well, we're going to be in the drive by club as well. In fact, my mom yesterday was telling my dad to dust off the patio furniture because we've got an aunt and uncle who always come in around this time, But there Gonna be staying for very long. And they're not actually gonna think I guess come in the house. They're afraid, too. So I'm still wondering what the point of coming down from Charlevoix will be for them, but it'll be fun. Nonetheless. We'll make it work as we've been making it work for the past over. Nine months or so, right? Eight months. Well, if your if your family's gonna be sitting on the patio, you better whip up some hot cocoa. Yeah. What about you, Steve? Well, you know what Christmas Eve a stave, Rieger alluded to has always been The big day in the Courtney household, always at my mom and Dad's and dad passed away in 2007. Mom has continued the tradition and there's usually about 30. People are so that stopped by with family, friends, neighbors. What have you been? We have decided that you know what we're going to get together at Mom's immediate family. Only my brother, his family, my sister, You know you're talking Probably A dozen people. We believe mast up. Uh, social distance, of course. And you know, the tradition, you know, will continue, albeit in a very different way. Um But that's just the way we're going to do it. And what comes time to make a decision based on what is good for your family. Quite frankly, there is no wrong decision. You have to move forward during this special time of year. The best.

"Now let's get this party started here, Steve Courtney. Yeah. What he said. Let's get this party started. Steve Courtney here with you at Spartan Stadium. We are looking forward to the 49th meeting between your Michigan State Spartans and the Buckeyes of Ohio State. By the way, they come in number four in the land. Of course. They were supposed to be in Champaner Bana. When we could go against the funding a line I That could not go off because of covert protocol. And this game quite honestly was in question. But we are good to go. Thank goodness. We do know that Ryan Day the head coach of the Buckeyes will not be on the scene today. Those duties will be taken over by assistant head coach defensive line coach Larry Johnson. So, uh, And then the plot thickens Mel Tucker, his staff this spartan team really not sure as to exactly what Buckeyes would be available. For this till so as we'll hear shortly from Mel Tucker, you prepare like everybody is good to go. That is just the way you go about your business. Meanwhile, there's a lot of confidence here. At Spartan Stadium. We are one week removed from the nice 29 20 win over then number eight, northwestern Michigan State came out with a mission. In particular on the offensive side of the ball. We saw the Spartans run it like we have come to know and love 195 yards on the ground. It's a matter of fact. Another shameless plug. Don't you dare go away! My player profile is coming up on the horizon. That will be with the one.

"Lyons, Radio Central. Here are Steve Courtney and Sean Bally Gin. Well, there is just no doubt about it, folks. This is going to be a different Thanksgiving, the first one ever. During a stupid global pandemic. Hopefully you and yours are well as we get things going here on the countdown. You know one thing that is not going to change and it has been A tradition since 1934 that is Detroit Lions football. You got the Houston Texans at Ford Field today? And that's what we're talking about. By golly, Steve Courtney Shamba Legion Whether you hear in Lyons Radio Central, Happy Thanksgiving to you, partner. Right back to you and yours. And Steve, You're absolutely right. If you're listening to this right now, this is part of your DNA's. There's no other way to say that. The Lions Thanksgiving they go hand in hand. It's all we've known our entire lifetime and with everything going on the world. I'm thankful that at least we have that today. Well, you know, Here's the deal. The Houston Texans. It has been an ordeal this season. Bill O'Brien there long time head coach relieved of his duties. Romeo Cornell. I think he got into this league in 1928. He has been the interim head coach. There's been some things that have gone sideways. What we know they're coming off a win against the New England Patriots. There are three and seven ball club and they're fine Quarterback to Shawn Watson. You talk about athletic he is throwing at just under 70%. Hey, has thrown for 20 touchdowns. He has only thrown five interceptions. And my question to you, Shawn. Has he really wrap his head around the DeAndre Hopkins trade yet? I can't imagine that he has and, you know, look, there's still some weapons there from the receiving corps. He's missing, too, but they still have some guys that you have to look out for. But I mean, look, Steve, there was a reason that everybody pounded Bill O'Brien when that deal was made, and there has been absolutely nothing to show. That everybody was wrong. Sometimes the masses air wrong and this one just a bad bad football deal, so they had to move on. There's no doubt about that. There's a little bit of that going on with lions this week. You know after the ugly loss, no other way to say it the ugly loss on Sunday This lion team has to move forward as well. Well, it was when we could go. We were talking about how banged up The Lions were going into that Carolina tilled. It didn't end up. Well, folks, not at all Lions generating 185 yards of total offense just 40 yards on the ground. Andre third down conversions. Three of 14. Now the reason I mentioned this, and by the way, emphasize it kind of a similar situation going into the Texans till because First of all, the inactives will be out coming up in about 27 minutes. 11 o'clock on this Thanksgiving morning. Meanwhile, Danny Amendola is out. Kenny Golladay will not go still bothered by that bad hip. He is out and we are receiving word Adam Schefter ESPN zone, saying that DeAndre Swift, hey had limited practice yesterday listed originally is questionable, but Adam Schefter saying that DeAndre Swift will not be able to go. So basically what you're looking at is a mirror of last Sunday in Charlotte, somebody Anybody step up and make a play. Well, and Steve, You know what? This is the team that you have to do it against in a perfect world. You know, this is a team that that has been run on left and right in a perfect world, you would control the ball. You would keep to Shawn Watch and off the field, and this would be a quick game for everybody. And, you know, end in the Lion victory, but Right now, What you're seeing is DeAndre. Swift is clearly been the best option, you know, is this the week that Adrian Peterson turns back the clock or even carry on? Johnson turns back the clock. The lines desperately need one of those guys to step up this week Well, and there is a unit of focus for this Lions team going into the Texans till that would be the offensive line. Throughout this season. We have talked about that group being a strength of this ball club Taylor Decker, allowing his 1st 2nd What 11 months in that shutout loss so we could go. Matthew Stafford was sacked five times, but he was under pressure. Heck of a lot more. This lions offensive line has a lot to prove. And to a man, I think I think they'll do just that today. Yeah, They better do that. Because, you know, look, there are already enough things working against the Lions. Make sure that you take it personal. What happened last week in lines to a man Shouldn't take it personally. It really was that ugly. Uh, this would be the week to flex the muscle and say we're not going down like that. Nothing but out, not respect for JJ Watt the way he has gone about playing this game at a very high level, probably at great sacrifice to his body. He is not the same JJ Watt that he was 23 years ago. He is still A formidable force. But again while much like last week, going into the panther till this defense for the Houston Texans, statistically and you name a category, not allow that sound. You're hoping that the Lions will find a way to exploit that today. Yeah, no doubt about that, Steve. You know this is this is a situation where I'll just reiterate specifically on the run. If they can get that run game going keep to Sean off the field. That is really gonna bode well for the lines, and it's gonna make things happen for Matthew Stafford, who again? Is missing a couple of his key components as well. So unquestionably, Steve, this is a defense that can be had. Is this the offense that can have them? We'll find out all right. Today's magic, by the way, marks the second.

Lions Steve Courtney Houston Texans Detroit Lions DeAndre Swift Matthew Stafford Sean Bally Gin Bill O'Brien JJ Watt Shawn Watson Ford Field Lyons Adam Schefter New England Patriots Danny Amendola interim head Radio Central

"Substituting Steve Courtney. Well, here we are. 8 49 on a Friday morning during football season Normally I'd be previewing. Michigan State Maryland football with the fine head coach himself, Mel Tucker. Well, these are not normal times. You know, by now the Maryland Terrapins had to opt out of tomorrow's tilt. Because of a spike in covert infections. It'll be back to normal following the Thanksgiving holiday, your Spartans will be playing host of Northwestern Wildcats. At least that's the plan and we'll hear from Head coach Mel Tucker during the week. So now we go to plan B and it's time well spent because we're going to find out exactly what's going on with Frances Que Beckman and it's fine co host. I might point out, Mr Chris Alberta Frome Principe. Um, fellas, how we doing? Very good. Say good morning, Steve. Q. We text back and forth throughout the course of a week. It has been far too long. Since I've seen you hope all is well with you and yours, My friend. Always good And I hope the same for you and your whole family and Chris the same for us Well and welcome aboard. It's gonna be good. Theo. Have you on the show today? It's a little different than our usual routine. Where we where we talk about Principe in wealth management today. Chris is going to be one of us, Steve. He's uh and and I'm not gonna let him rub in that He's basically a scratch golfer, and I'm not He doesn't give me about nine aside. Well, we won't hold that against Chris. Money, fellas. Thanks for having me. Did you present Sansa? Chris? It sounds like you've gotten into Frank swallowed a couple times. Not yet only only once, but it was the finest $20 I ever spent. You know, there is no shortage of things to talk about Francis. I know that to be a fact. What's the focus of the Friday edition of the Beckmann Show going to be all about number one. Yesterday we had Jason Kidd lock on from the Wayne County Board of Canvassers, the vice chair, and today we're going to have The chair of the board. Monica Palmer, one of the Republicans who's been who's been just hammered by the left over what was going on at the Wayne County election certification. And so we'll talk to Monica about that about how she was treated about her trip to the White House, talking to President Trump. And it's she said. She said quite the weekend she not Chris and I will be told her. Well, I would not wanna be Monica. Recapping our top story of the morning our colleague Frank, who we have spent years and years, sharing microphones with Richard Hate ner officially making the announcement that as of December 11th. He will be retiring from this wonderful radio station. And I know your relationship would Richard goes back a little bit longer than mine, but we are so very happy. For Dick in this family absolutely, and good for him that he's able to do that at this time. I wish him the absolute best. He's He's one of the most professional news people that I have ever met in my life anywhere. That's not just wjr Steve. That's anywhere. And he's just one of the best. We will miss him dearly. I guarantee you that An old school journalist, right? Q. I mean, you know, we've both been at the blowtorch for a while. And and you know, Richard has had an impactful voice for a number of years and Let justice be a lesson to all of us That father time don't stand still Now that's true, and thank goodness it's his choice that he's leaving, you know, And by that, I don't mean that the station would cut him loose or anything like that. I mean, it's not illness or something like that. That drives him out, You know? He's he's apparently made this planet I wish him nothing but the best, you know. Interesting news. Frank will have yon visor is seeking emergency use of the covert 19 vaccine, which by the way, Again listed to be 95% effective. Are you going to get one Q Probably. Yes, I'm sure I will. Because I look, we've I was slow to come around on this. I'll admit it. I wasn't sure that it was gonna be this bad. The outbreak. But it sure has been. It's been worse than anything we could have ever imagined. So yes, I will. And I would urge everybody to. Yeah. We just don't know what the end game is. And here we are, Francis. Eight months into it, Chris. This thing is balloon. But you go back to may, and at that time the scientists were saying, Look what we could experience and fall winner will make what we're looking at right now look like Disneyland, and I'll be darned if that hasn't been the case so Uh, we have thought for a while that we are at the mercy until there's a vaccine. Thankfully, fellas, it looks like that's on the horizon. Uh, quicker than maybe most of us thought exactly and got. I think the first responders initially and that's that's the way it should be, because they're the ones who You have to take care of us when when we're all sick, So I have no problem with that. I don't think anybody will. And then from there, we should go to 18 handicaps. There we go. I'd rather not. Well, you guys have a great time. I know you will. Frances. Always a pleasure critic.

"60 W Jr. President Trump is a scheduled to speak any minute at the White House on the election. So if we get that we'll try to bring it to you happen very much makes thank you Welcome. But until that happens on, we're here for the unpredictable moves. So I think he's going to come out and say You know where we're filing lawsuits. It's not over. I'm going to be proving the winner. Ah, you know the general stuff that his lawyers have been saying, Don't expect him to come out and say You know what? I lost him going to dinner. I lost and you know, Joe, come on. If you want to start tomorrow. I just don't think that's going to happen. But I want to bring up something here and Steve Courtney's going tto do is Listen, it's after six. There are a lot grayer, my brain fried at this point, but We have not talked about Corona virus. It's very interesting how CNN just wiped Corona virus off. You don't know chart anymore. It's all about Blue States Red states. But meanwhile, here in Michigan, we got a very, very serious situation going on. And our our rates have been shooting up tremendously, and I've been very perplexed by this. Because it hasn't been that cold. And everyone talked about. You know, the cold weather is going to bring it in the second surge, which we always heard about. Well, clearly we're going through the second surge in this country 100,000 cases. But It perplexes me here in Michigan because You look back at the when it was last tie back in March. And we weren't wearing masks. We didn't have masks. Remember? They were telling us not to wear masks, and there weren't enough Mass to go around. And this was when it was terrible and all that. And we would have 1000 1500 cases a day. Then it started to wane or behavior We had locked down April into May we were locked down. But the case is dropped from 1000 to 500. In some cases, even less than 500 during early June, we got down to you know a few 100 cases a day and then slowly in July August, this thing started to open up its started to rise again, but help pretty steady around 1000. Cases a day through August and starting into September, and then from September forward, it's just shot up. It's just shot up regularly. My question is were all wearing masks now for the large part We weren't in March. Why isn't this case continue to go up? I know that there are some people who don't wear a mask. But by and large you go to any supermarket candy where paper are wearing masks. So that leads me to one of two conclusions. One Why they keep saying everybody's gotta wear a mask. And now Governor Wittmer wants a stalwart wants the state Legislature. Now you have to ask, you know, she can't just come in and say this is what you're gonna do for dinner. Now she has to say, What do you want? Guys want to eat for dinner? She's suggesting that we have a Mask mandate everywhere, inside and in certain places outside. But I wonder a our masks really is effective as they're telling us they are no one has ever claimed that masks keep you from getting Corona virus. They just say they're your best bet. But there are evidences and there are reports that germs get out. Even amongst people who are massed. And wouldn't you agree that we've gotten to the point where we're sort of like a long as I got a mask on him, okay? We go to supermarkets. We goto events. We go to gyms. We got places. I got my mask on. I'm OK, right? Sure, it's almost like a false sense of security. It is. I think people get very unspoken story is that masks are not It'd be all end all in protecting us because otherwise you would not have these. Serge is going on here. Not with so many Americans wearing masks. Now the second thing I want to point out Here in Michigan. Do you know where the highest case rate is right now in the whole state in the most rural areas, the U. P Wow has the highest case rate in the state of Michigan 509 cases per million There's not even a million people up there 509 cases per million It's been increasing for nine straight weeks. Meanwhile, Detroit Has 200 cases per million. We are 2.5 times less than the U P The trend has been reversed. Literally. It totally has. Now. Why is that? We'll think about it. Up in the U. P And and and Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo are the next closest 3 73 30. These are places not Grand Rapids so much. Certainly u p where they don't think that corner right virus exists. In many cases, it's It's not that serious is not so they haven't been wearing masks. For a while. They haven't been taking a lot of precautions. Now. Weather is getting colder. People are spending more time inside schools, regular routines. All the rest of it, will you If you're taking your habits from the summer, which was we don't need a mask. And now you're bringing them indoors. It doesn't make sense that all of a sudden the U. P for the last nine weeks, nine weeks takes us all the way back to September, right, right. That's exactly when it started when people started going to school and interacting of summer's over and all that endures, so it's very interesting that Detroit is actually doing quite well. Detroit is amongst the lowest The lowest region is Jackson with 193 cases per million, But Detroit is a 200. So it says something about our habits. But it also says something about these masks, period and As soon as this election stuff stops distracting people. We're going to get back to the fact that this is this is really a major deals. Not going anywhere. Yeah, is not going anywhere. Although the you'd never know by the NFL because they just keep blacking plan. Somebody next. Stand up. Somebody getting TV. It's like gladiators, mate. You're a sports fan. So you appreciate the time. Sure you have looked at how many players in tonight's San Francisco Green Bay game for the 40 Niners are not on the roster. They're missing their starting quarterback. They're starting running back there every one of their receivers all the fourth years, starting offensive a 71% of their offense. It's gone. I mean, there's still going to play this game against Green Bay. They put four more people out and and and these teams have had covert cases as well. And that's what another four guys have gone out today because they were exposed to cope and kind of like the Matthew Stafford situation. And so they're not playing tonight because they have to play. But the NFL's just trudging on they don't they don't care. Just going to keep playing these games were the 40 Niners, A FedEx guy dropped off a package Wednesday and the GM ask him if he's ever played football. All right, put the package down there and, honestly, dude up. It is true. It is that it's absolutely crazy. All right. We'll come back in here from Steve Courtney. On the other side of this. Here's the traffic. This report.

"It and all happy game day while we're at it. Let me just start by saying this if your clock says 11 A.m. You might want to dial it back an hour. Apparently, everybody here it. Lions radio successfully navigated the time change and lo and behold your Detroit lines and the opportunity to win their third straight. And get over 500. What's standing in their way? That would be the Colts of Indianapolis. Steve Courtney here, along with my broadcast partner, Mr Shawn, Malaysian. What's up, pal? I can't believe it's November already. My goodness gracious, the year that refuses to end its November It's beautiful on riel. Hopefully, everybody had a happy and safe Halloween. I'll tell you what different. You better believe it. Absolutely no kids in the Courtney neighborhood? Yeah, it was weird. You know, odd in our neighborhood, we We put the Bulls out. I noticed all the rest of my cold. The sack was doing it. So I said, I just put the bowl out. I only finished the candy, but you have to wonder if there were little Steve Courtney's and Sean Bally Jin's that we're grabbing handfuls and anvils. Oh, and that's a given. You know what you're going to do. Meanwhile, let's talk about this Colts team. Shall we? A CZ? We begin the countdown to your lions and colts. They bring in Philip Rivers now early in his Colts career, he was coming under a little fire. Here's what we know right now. The crafty veteran throwing it just under 70%. He's throwing for 70 GS. However, he will give it up. Philip Rivers has thrown six picks, You know to me, he's Philip Rivers. I mean, the guy that the cold's got is the Philip Rivers that we've all come to know and love. See the bottom line with this guy is on any given week. He can like anybody up. He's done that throughout his career. Conversely, in any given week. He can really not have it on that particular day. He's been one of those guys. That's been incredibly consistent. Certainly more good than bad. Let's give him his due there. But it is amazing that even with the change of scenery, Philip Rivers continues to well, Philip Rivers running the ball for the Colts interesting story while he was in Madison, Jonathan Taylor. Extremely gifted and I think everybody was wondering what he would be like. It's a pro will. Now we're figuring it out. He's run for 367 yards, the rookie out of Wisconsin. That's a 4.1 yards per carry average. He's seen the end zone three times. Ah, you're certainly going to after count for him, and the Lions have been doing such a great job defending the run of late. Yeah, it's one of those things. They can hurt you in a myriad of ways, Steve. I mean, that's just the bottom line. With this team, and again I caution, everybody. We We've seen the good Philip Rivers in the bad Philip Rivers, So let's see which guy we get today. Well, you know what has been kind of interesting week for the hand little blue and silver because they make a trade with those Cowboys, bringing aboard defensive end Everson Griffin. Now he is not going to be eligible today because of covert protocol. He will make his debut ironically enough. Against the franchise. He spent 10 great years with the purple people leaders, the Minnesota Vikings. I don't know if you saw his tweet tow lions nation, but it sounds like he's good to go. Let's go. No, hey, and you know what? This reminds me a lot off when Two years ago, right around the same time the lines were three and three. They brought in snacks. Harrison They needed to really help out that run defense. The good news was Steve. He helped out that run defense. I mean, that run defense improved almost immediately. The bad news is the lines went three and seven the rest of the year. You've got to find a way to flip that script. How about seven and three the rest of the year? Would that be beautiful? You know what? As we've discussed, the schedule is pointing in that direction. All the lions have to do is seize the moment anyway. You go back to when Mr Griffin was a member of the Minnesota Vikings. He was absolute poison to the lions in 19 games against them. He had 16 South. Did it seem like every time? I mean, for a while, it was Jared Island. Excuse me, Jared Allen, And then it was ever seen. Griffin. So, yeah, Welcome aboard. We'd like to see in these colors. Well, what the Colts come into town here and by the way, the lights will be on it. Ford Field for the first time in about a month, and there's going to be something something a little different. There's going to be 500, friends and family on hand. A cz. Well, according to president a rod would here is the quote with health and safety being the top priority. This is an opportunity to further evaluate new stadium protocols on a larger scale. We continue to collaborate with local, state and national health officials on increasing capacity for our remaining home games now. If you're like us, you're thinking well, is there a chance that will all be able to go to Ford Field for the Thanksgiving tilt with the taxes? With a number spiking as they are. I don't think so. But we shall see. Let's you know, Let's keep hope alive. I mean, his cheeses. It sounds. Let's keep hope alive. It would be wonderful, Steve. I miss it immensely. I miss just being outside and walking around that beautiful field, and it still is a beautiful place. But I'm just glad I'm an accentuate the positive guy. I'm glad we have football because there was awhile. Yeah, I think we're all is this gonna happen? So I'm trying to count my blessings in that regard. All right. Great matchup as we count down to the Colts, and now a little blue and silver will be this vaunted Colts defense. Their top five folks in three major defense of categories points allowed, rushing and passing. Now we've got that lions offense, you get the sense. Starting to find themselves. I do know this a cz we get you ready? Lion's gonna find the end zone. You can't have that crater with five field goals today. Yeah. Doesn't that sound like that's something? We have been talking about that Stephen our entire time doing this here on The flagship station, and it would be wonderful if down the stretch. Look, I'm telling you, especially the way everything shaping up. You find a way to do that. You improve. Improve that pass rush. This team is going to go on an upward trajectory. All right, we have ah, more boxes to fill in for you. Well, Kind of an election day reference coming up in just a couple of days anyway, um or information you bet, such as what's going on with lions today?.

"Detroit Lions getting the second quarter of the season underway on this game day Sunday. In Jacksonville against the Jaguars. For the record, the alltime Siri's Between these two clubs tied at three apiece. I'll let you know the Lions have won. The past two. Now the Jaguars old there are hurting. They are one and four ball club. They have lost four straight clients. Obviously not setting it on fire there. One and three. The schedule is set up in a way that Patricia and the Honda Little Blue and Silver can make a little action. We'll see what happens. It's got its start today. It just adds to Steve Courtney here, Sean Bally Jin over day. What's up, buddy? Yeah, I'm with you. It's got to start today. You have to win this game. I mean these air two teams. Steve, Let's be perfectly blunt. Neither one of these teams Khun, stop anybody. I mean, they just can't sew on paper. This looks like a day that we could see some points for those of you that pay attention. To those types of things over under. But with that being said, I do like the Lions weapons Mohr than I like Jacksonville's weapons. We've said that before famous last words, but You have to take care of business in this game. Well defensively, let's start there because it has been a sore spot for the Lions throughout this 2020 season there once again near the bottom of the league in many major defensive categories, including Yards per gain yards per play rushing yards per game and yards Per rush. What else is there? Mac Patricia has said he is looking to simplify things a little bit. And maybe that will make a difference as far as scheme and mohr importantly, thie ability for this lions defense to do their jobs. Yeah, you're not looking Tio have You know the next great defense. You're not. You're not looking to have the 85 bears of the 2000 Ravens. It's exactly what you just said. Do your job yet limit things. You don't give this offense and opportunity. By all means. Try to stop a team when you have a lead, you know, I mean, those are the types of things that you have just been a constant issues. With this football team under Matt patrician, and today Listen, Jacksonville can score there's no doubt about that they can score. Uh, let's hope that you score more than them today, because right next even this point I don't know how anybody could Sit back and say Yeah, I think this line's defense is going to step up today. Based on what you're hoping that happens Well last year the lion's gave up 400. 0.4 yards 284 point for passing yards per game. Sadly, That defense makes this one Look like the steel curtain of the Steelers in the seventies. Frightened? Sadly, yeah. Oh, no, It's it's It's absolutely true. So that's one of the things that you're You're just gonna have to live with that, and it's not going to change in the course of a week, you know? I mean, this is something I think they're gonna have to build. Ah credit line, so to speak before people start talking about them shutting down anybody. Maybe it starts today. I don't know. Well map, Patricia, throughout hey has been a big consistency guy when he talks about the faults of this 2020 Lions team in particular defensively. He says. We've got to be consistent. We have got to go out and be consistent. Consistent. Consistent, consistent. Well, let me just tell you this from the outside looking in, and here it is. Tunnel four on a Sunday morning far be it for me to be deep. But you can't coach consistency. Consistency is something that is obtained by the personnel that you have no question if they're going to be a consistent Check that consistently good football team. It's going to be on them. Yeah, And that's that's exactly it. And and Steve again with with his much bad credit is this franchise has right now. I should say not this franchise. As as much as this administration. It isn't going to be fixed overnight. You know, you have to earn some trust back. It isn't just going to be fixed with today, but It starts with today. Well, number nine. Matthew Stafford, By the way, for the record, he is for no lifetime in the great state of Florida. Not to mention how about this. Ah, he has 2435 past yards. Antiqued and 10 TDs against just two picks for a 93.8 career rating in eight career starts against the FC South. Okay, keeper going, What does it mean? I don't know means take the over. That's what I'm thinking. But that's a conversation for a different day. Do you agree that if there's Lions team Is going to make a charge and let's face it. For many, many reasons they need to It's going to evolve around that offensive side of the ball. It has two. Yeah, there's there's no doubt about that. Just Telling yourself each game. Look, guys, we have to go and we have to keep going. We can't let up. It would be great to talk in terms of ball control. They have to finish drives. I mean, it isn't so good. We took five minutes off the off the clock or anything like that. You have no faith that when the opposition gets the ball that this defense is going to stop somebody, I mean, you just don't right now. That's That's where we're at. So absolutely Steve. I think that's the one thing you can control is to go out and say, You know what? Every drive. We're going to be the effective offense. If this often has shown it can be. We need more consistency out of the offense as well. Let's not mince words. But you can't expect to team to score every drive. But the way this defense is is performing We're going to have to start asking of even more from this often. So you get the impression certainly, you know, talking to Ah, A few of the players since the bye week has come and gone, that they understand the task at hand. Look, these guys understand that map. Patricia's seat is on fire. Right now. They say they enjoy playing for what you need to do is you need to put Ah couple of wins back to back and again in that regard. You look at the schedule. It's favorable for that. Absolutely. Yeah. And Steve, this is this is actions speak a heck of a lot louder than words. You have a bunch of guys saying they love coach Patricia. You had guy saying that that that's why they wanted to come here. Well, you know how you prove that you prove it on the field. You could talk about how great a guy is, and I think that Patricia's great guy, but he isn't paid to be a great guy. He's paid to win football games that they're not doing it and more often than not Steve. Unfortunately, we are talking about you know those head scratching moments in those, huh? Type of moments out of this football team. Well, all right, folks. Here we go. Steve. Courtney. Shawn believes in here in Lyons. Radio Central with you were painting a picture. Don't you know the lions and Jags get together shortly. The countdown is under way. Hey. What else is going on with lions Today? We're three hours away from kickoff at a bank field for a preview of.

"The countdown to kickoff is Well underway Your lions at beautiful Ford Field minus fans. Sadly to take on those Chicago Bears were taking you up to it. Steve Courtney here along with showing BA lesion. And there was pandemic era college football yesterday. Ah little bit different. I kind of felt a little bit empty. Watching what I watched. Of course I did. Um, but you know what? You've got the big 10, who, by the way, have a major vote, maybe as early as today as to when they will begin play if they decide to go in that direction. Yo Pac 12 not playing other conferences, not playing. Others are and it was just kind of Ah. Different feeling, wasn't it? Yeah, It's been like that the last couple weeks. I think what helped was obviously the schedule opening up Mohr than it had been. It was nice to see Notre Dame. I'm not gonna lie. North Carolina early in the day was Another one that I was keeping an eye on Iowa State, But I'm with you. I mean, I'm so used to seeing what the green and white are doing to seeing what Michigan is doing to seein what Ohio State is doing and Stevens, You said. Hopefully, that's changing right now, as we speak. There is so much rumor and speculation and innuendo out there this very moment that Ah, vote has already taken place. We don't know anything. We're not going to say anything until we get official word. It would be wonderful. No doubt about that. But the sense of normalcy, Steve, I even commented It was nice to see the fans Ville commercials. I love the fans, Ville commercials. They always make me laugh. With the boss in it. So, ah, sense of normalcy to be sure, but not quite all the way there yet. Well, you know what does it come down to this again? Far? Be it from me to oversimplify anything. Can you beat Clemson? The top ranked team in the country all over Wake Forest 37 13 You allude to Notre Dame? The fighting Irish took a bit to get going. They would eventually dispose of Duke 27 13 Brian Kelly, by the way. Re ups with the fighting Irish through 2024, so apparently, the deal was done back in December. While you're sitting on it. Isn't it crazy? He could be very soon the winningest coach in Notre Dame history Now think about that. I mean that that is crazy when you think about it. Ian Book just keeps winning. Say what you want about Ian book, and I think a lot of people have said what they want about Ian Book, but correct me if I'm wrong. I believe he's now 21. 3 is a starter. It wasn't pretty, but they got the job done. From a upset standpoint. Not a good day for 23rd rank Iowa State at home. No less losing tow Louisiana 31 14. Something didn't go right. You know what Bobby Boucher was awesome for the raging Cajun. The water boy came in and got the job done. No, you're absolutely right in the way they pulled the way Steve. I was I was watching that one. The way they pulled away to me. It left no debate that the raging Cajuns were the better team on that day again. A huge meeting Big 10 wise Yesterday they sorted it out some influential folks and some medical people. And we understand that the vote could come as early as today. We will certainly keep you posted on the decision of the big 10 Tio begin play and that is going to be huge. Meanwhile, we continue to count you down the line.

Sources: Big Ten expected to cancel football season; no games for Michigan, Michigan State in 2020

"It is not official yet. But we know the big 10 presidents met, and the reporting from a number of different sources now is that 12 out of the 14 said we want to and need to Reluctantly pull the plug on the Big 10 college football season, at least for the moment and move it to spring. Want to get to the down and dirty about what's driving that decision with Steve Courtney? Who, of course, leads our team when it comes to Michigan State University football Hasty What's going on there, guy? How's everything, my friend? Well, I am sorry, because I know this is this would be a deep disappointment, and I have no doubt that it will become official sometime later today or tomorrow. What's AH, in your mind what's driving the decision? Why are they so doubtful that they can move Can't move forward with some quarantining? Well, first of all, guys, I participated in a zoom meeting with the new Michigan state head football coach Mel Tucker. Last Friday, and at that particular time coach Tucker was cautiously optimistic that the protocols that were set up would be successful and again. I say cautiously optimistic because he realised, of course, a za nation were at the mercy of this dreaded virus. Well, as you pointed out at the outset of our conversation, Big 10 presidents voted 12 to yesterday to end the fall sports in the conference and look guy. Here's the thing. I'm sure like me. You have been asked by a gazillion times going back to march. Is there gonna be college football? Is there going to be college football? Is there going to be NFL football? If I had a dime for every time I've been asked? I'd be a very wealthy man. The fact of the matter is our nightmare has begun because it's not going to be a shock to a lot of people guy. There's not gonna be college football this year, and the question is, why would there be

"7 60 W. J. R Filling in for Frank, Steve Courtney. Welcome back into the Francis Q program here on 7 60 W. J. R Again. Q. He will be absent the remainder of the week. He shall return to this here. Microphone. Come Monday morning. In the meantime, lots to discuss with you, Steve Courtney here again, just a reminder. The tradition continues indeed. Open lines getting underway after Richard Hefner's 11 o'clock news 808 590 W J R 808 590957 Flying into it these days. Ah, Lot has changed. There is no question about it. Let's talk about that. Seth Kaplan joins us now. Transportation analyst for NPR is here and now South. How are you this morning? Doing all right, Steve, Considering right, That's that's all any of us could be doing these days is relatively well. I cannot wait after somebody ask you. How's it going? Um, to not finish the reply with considering I I don't know exactly when that's going to be Seth, but certainly the airline industry has been devastated by covert 19. There are those who continue to fly. Certainly we have read almost daily about airlines going through layoffs and it's an ugly situation. Where do we stand? Seth and all of this right now. The number of travellers if you just look at people showing up at airports are well off their lows of a few months ago. So if you went to an airport in the middle of April, I mean there was nobody there. That's no longer the case there. There are people flying again but still closer to the lows than to the usual Volumes of travelers and and you know, it's almost entirely domestic travel right now. The Americans weren't even allowed to go any places in the world. And so yes, still deeply depressed that this is the worst crisis that the airline industry has ever faced. Worse than 9 11 for example, just no president for for what's going on now, Things were starting to pick up. But then you have this whole new wave of cove. It Throughout the country, and that kind of killed what looked to be somewhat of a recovery going into the summer. Is there any geography behind? Where people are going, meaning Obviously, California devastated. Arizona, Florida, Georgia. All these states going through their issues with spikes. Are there places that folks are flying to on a regular basis of No, And I think that's what these past several weeks have taught us that it's hard to run from this airline sort of had this tactic up until three or four weeks ago of the doing kind of what you're talking about, right, focusing on areas where things weren't at bad Florida of all places hard to imagine now, but it was a bright spot. A month ago. Jet Blue, for example, in airline that's generally kind of focused on the East Coast reapplying people between New York and Florida the whole bunch of new routes from the Midwest to Florida Because the idea was OK, Things aren't so bad. The Midwest things about in Florida. People are traveling between those two places. And now what we've seen.

"R. to the filling in for Frank Steve Courtney once again we walking into the Frank Beckman show here on seven sixty W. J. R. we are in the final hour of this fine morning edition and we are going to kick it off with some pretty darn good news for a lot of folks when it comes to us from Mr damn roulette the United States secretary of energy Mr secretary how are you this morning I'm doing great Steve how are you wonderful Sir let me just give us somewhat of an outline here and then we will get to the great news Sir as it applies to our great state of Michigan the department of energy is awarding two hundred fifty six grants totaling fifty three million dollars to two hundred eleven small businesses in thirty five states and the district of Columbia these phase one grants will allow small businesses to research technical feasibility of new innovations that advance the mission of the department now the phase one grants I allude to R. six to twelve months in duration with the median award amount of two hundred thousand and Mr secretary as I mentioned that good news applies to Michigan to the tune of about eight hundred thousand dollars Sir that's correct people were very excited about this this is all part of our small business research and development grant program and these are the companies are to provide the technologies of tomorrow so we're very excited about the work that they're doing any other folks in Ann Arbor folks in Lansing these are great small companies and creating jobs all throughout Michigan and we're looking forward to helping them grow so they can start providing jobs all across America you know Dan I'm sure there are some folks tuned in right now that are you know maybe taken aback but this is great news that the department of energy actually takes it upon themselves to hand out some much needed funds to some folks that really need it that's absolutely true spirit you know we're doing this as part of the the economic recovery and it's it's Michigan opens up we want to be right there step by step with you other important to these are long range goals that we have you know reporter he has a long relationship with the state of Michigan we have a very important laboratory at Michigan State University since twenty seventeen I think we spent perhaps three hundred million dollars plus at that facility we work closely with the auto manufacturers on things like Hogwarts materials of Vance materials new technologies battery technologies for potentially moving to all market to create electric vehicles it's been a very close and very rewarding relationship for us with the department of energy go green that's all I'm gonna say their Mr secretary further more I know there's for businesses in Michigan that will be in receipt of this cash to the tune of two hundred thousand dollars per what was the criteria Dan is to which businesses would receive sure we had a rigorous program internally I mean what we do is we'll just look at the merit you know it's a merit based process that we use but we look at the idea itself when we you know judged on merit and if we look at the presenter of the idea and determine whether or not they can actually execute on the idea that they're presented and then we look at the long term impact of what does it mean to the consumers what does it mean to society what is it that we're trying to do here and after they've met those three tests that we have a group inside America review board that makes the final determination and that's how these four companies in Michigan were selected I'm looking at one of those Mr secretary Nile wave incorporated out of Lansing it involves nuclear energy the project fabrication and testing that Vance feels for lead and sodium cooled fast reactors the summary sodium and lead cooled fast reactors have key advantages including superior heat transfer improved efficiency and compact designs I guarantee it the Mr secretary you won't over here me ever talking about something like this in public this is some pretty advanced stuff it is just a great place to do this the university system of this and is just outstanding yeah and you know the future of nuclear is going to be very very exciting with moving from big giant nuclear reactors as we have seen across the country that's a very small compact we referred to as micro reactors and these are you know reactors that produce maybe a megawatt of power took that's what I'd like to walk you through our very important to our defense community so Michigan is right there at the tip of the spear helping us develop these things with the US department of defense and nuclear energy also is what H. three D. incorporated does out of Ann Arbor there's also another company in Ann Arbor well it's H. three D. again coming through with another two hundred thousand for defense nuclear nonproliferation which is a mouthful in and of itself the bottom line Mister secretary is you know in these challenging economic times it's so wonderful that the fine folks at the department of energy comes through with this well we we would work with it it's very important account may have to re open this president but just yesterday when it was the Detroit we have to get the back we have to get people back to work we have to get back to work quickly and that's why we're we're approaching this is a whole whole of government you know hold government manner so my colleagues at the state business administration a working day and night I talked to the small business administrator we provide it more more loans to small businesses across the country in the last fourteen days in the S. P. A. has provided in the last eighteen years combined so everybody is working overtime to ensure that we get this continent started as I mentioned Mr secretary the beginning of our conversation two hundred eleven small businesses thirty five states as well as the district of Columbia a question here was this something that these various companies were aware that the department of energy had this cash available may applied or Wade were they selected although the these are programs that are ongoing US department of energy so this is what the beginning of a very long relationship though these companies compete for these awards we we we award them on a regular basis are the U. S. department of energy okay if anyone is interested in applying go to energy dot com and we have all the information available for you all right well thank you so much for everything you do they're Dan we certainly appreciate it you know I know these businesses that we discuss the four here in Michigan much better off you know any day you get an extra two hundred grand that something good and I'm sure it's gonna be put to good use that set up a great deal with the state all right Dan take care and have a wonderful wonderful holiday weekend you.

"In for Frank Steve Courtney yes the Frank Beckman show continues here on seven sixty W. J. are following the governor's address some very interesting information in that Richard she did discuss the fact that she had a conversation with president trump last night she referred to it as brief but it's interesting the president offering some resources obviously to mid Michigan following that flooding and she was asked if she would join the president when he decides to visit the greater Midland area of course the governor said indeed right so we'll see if that happens no information beyond what you just gave has been given and there's no information from the White House as to whether the president is actually going to visit the Midland area but it looks like if he goes in he takes it to or whether its helicopter or in some sort of a ground vehicle that the governor will be with him he is fully aware that the governor is on cable TV virtually every night right blasting him and his administration she has turned out to be one of the strong strong critics of trump so that certainly would be interesting to be in the same car with them is there me and and looking at the floods well they had a real barber to no question about it as a matter of fact we alluded earlier of course to president trump's visit to the Rossendale plant of Ford in Ypsilanti and it was being bandied about as to why governor Whitmer did not receive an invitation which you know in most situations like this would be a standard protocol of the White House didn't have an answer was really never discussed but maybe and nobody's saying you know fence mending is in order here but you know maybe if the governor and president get together and over the the middle of a crisis you know maybe a change of thought would take place you know I mean DOT maybe but remember he's Republican she's Democrat so that kind of stuff will be very limited meanwhile the governor also discussing several things here and you paint a great picture Richard of the medical aspect of the governor loosening things up a little bit affected by on the twenty ninth of this month dental medical and veterinary services will be back in business if you will under a strict safety protocol right and the I think that's the most important part of her announcement today what can be more important in people's health that's where the corona virus of course issue comes in your own physical health and your own physical health is affected by every time you go to the doctor or you go to the dentist for even the most routine services and this all is going to be back up and running by the end of the month I think a lot of patience from mob of medical offices and doctors offices and dental offices already have been contacted by mail for the purpose of telling them what will be happening in terms of the safety procedures and the precautions of physical distancing the cleaning of offices so a lot of patients already have been informed as to what their doctors and dentists will be doing once you go back to the office and the nonessential surgeries are back on and you heard a couple of the doctors here during the news conference talking about that and so you can you can expect a flood of the of the new surgery appointments to be made and maybe that will certainly go a long way in easing the financial crunch that we've heard about that is affecting the hospitals and Richard before the break here another huge development in the governor's address with the memorial weekend on the horizon water balloon fights are background well groups of ten or less Hey you can have a nice battle with even those numbers Preciado Richard check back with you shortly it is the back man show here on seven sixty W. "Smith show news talk seven sixty WTA are substituting Steve Courtney just say this when you are the governor of the state it's a difficult job one with great responsibility you throw a pandemic into the mix and well you know happy to have with us the governor of the great state of Michigan Gretchen Whitmer governor how are you this morning good morning I'm I'm hanging in that is good news because obviously governor there is a lot going on and what I'd like to do is ask you this we go back to March tenth the day that you declared an emergency after confirming the state's first two cases governor did you know at that time a tsunami was about to hit was there optimism at that point that we would avert what we would later encounter well I think what we know is that it was a matter of time before covered nineteen came to Michigan not a question of F. and prior to March tenth I have set up to save merging fabrication center are we were starting to get ready but of course I don't think anyone could have anticipated how hard it would have on the information I think was stay clear of around the globe but not so clear here in the United States and we have we seen such damage recovered nineteen in Michigan worse than other states because even though we are the tenth largest state by population we've had the third highest number of deaths are we for a long time had the third highest number of positive cases and so it hit Michigan uniquely hard and that's why I think it was so critical that we took aggressive action as quickly as we can later on today governor there will be a few protests that is the right of those involved you began yesterday's conference paying tribute to a wonderful public servant Morris for the third who passed away of cold at nineteen almost fifty five years of age my question is and this is a humanitarian question or does one have a tendency of looking at this pandemic differently if they've been affected in other words does going to protest the stay at home and other things later on today what they look at it differently if they lost a loved one family member friend to this dreaded virus right I think so you know what we know about the modeling showed by this point in time if we hadn't taken dramatic action another thirty four hundred people in Michigan would have likely died that's what the modeling tells us in metropolitan Detroit people take it seriously because so many people have lost a loved one I've lost a number of people to covert nineteen and for the people who haven't but they're so fortunate but maybe they don't maybe they see these numbers and we've gotten numb to them but we lost our NBA it predicts we're gonna lose the equivalent of a nine eleven every twenty four hours by the end of this month in this country that was the day that stopped the whole world and this is happening the lady by the end of this month is what they're predicting it's really stunning if you take a minute and realize these are Michigan live forty seven hundred people who've died they died alone in a hospital not able to breathe their body giving out no family around them it's devastating it's so sad and a few friends you know fortunate not to have waffling toward I think maybe it's really hard to get your head around and that's why in the press conferences I really tried to continue to focus on the lives and stories and the people who have died because that's what this is all about that's what every action we're taking us about trying to save lives well and you have made it quite clear governor that your job is to keep the residents of this great state of Michigan safe it is not an easy undertaking because okay we are flattening the curve that is good news and governor I don't have to tell you folks in this state in the nation are clamoring for good news what is done to our economy is devastating and how long that is going to last is anybody's guess at this point my point to you governor is this while the news is good as it relates to the amount of new cases and maybe the deaths are slowing the news on the horizon it's still relatively grim that is a fine line in your decision making process it sure I mean there's no question that the health crisis begets the economic crisis and that's why we keep focusing on trying to get our arms around and and and save people on the health crisis because the longer this goes on the more people that diet does more threatens our health care system as the worst economic pain and I think it's important to acknowledge people are worried right they're strong they are scared people lost jobs many people are worried that their business might not make it and that is that is real a lot of people isolated and and are struggling you know emotionally and and mentally and I think it's that's our our reality for a lot of people probably the vast majority and yet we have to know that we're gonna be smart as we re engage so that we avoid a second late because as tough as the phones back difficult as these states have banned it would be so much worse if we have to go through it again in August or September or October and so would be variable here is human behavior are we going to stay vigilant are we gonna keep wearing the masks and all that more trips outside the house that aren't necessary or are probably not Weiss build longer we can continue to be disciplined on that front the better outcomes are going to be not just for the health of our people but for our ability to re engage this economy earlier this week governor in an interview you had made mention that looking into your crystal ball you do not foresee sports venues being packed this fall we don't have time to get into that but in those lines you know we've got kids at home and parents finding way to home school and I don't think teachers stock has ever been as high but when you look to fall and Dr Fauci has already said it would be a mistake to load classrooms this fall without getting to a point where he thinks we need to be you know the president has said that it was pretty much the wrong message but that's going to be another thing and if father time is not standing still it will be fall before we know what governor that's right and that's why I think it's important that we continue to learn all the lessons we can right now covered nineteen some novel by that means we've never seen him like that and there's no vaccine there's no cure yes but those are in process and and that will be on the horizon the timing is unknown and all of these unknowns we create a lot of anxiety but what we do know is that when we congregate and math that's how covert nineteen scratch and with it still being present in seventy nine out of R. eighty three counties we have to be vigilant about avoiding things that we know will commit to will contribute to community spread and that's why I say it's probably not likely that we're all gonna be packing stadiums this fall I think every epidemiologists and public health experts would have told me that same thing and that's why that's what I relate I think it's important for the public to relieve appreciate kind of what we're really confronting here and I'm always going to be honest even when people don't like what I'm saying I want to tell you what I'm learning from the experts and tell you how I see it playing out I haven't eight a declaration I have it you know I've made a a decision there are universities haven't made decisions but we're going to work together to keep people safe governor your job is difficult keep doing what you do it saddens me that there are threats to you involved that in my opinion is completely unnecessary it is difficult and hopefully this is something when we get through it will not be repeated at the end of our conversation governor certainly hope you're finding the time for a couple of two hearted ale is along the way you know at the end of this week I think I am going to have one or two god bless you governor thank you so much for your time really appreciate it thank you take care all right that is governor Gretchen Whitmer fight "Remain the same yours truly Steve Courtney along with Danny Miller the voice and we bring on the president of the how little blue and silver Mr rod ward how are you my friend just like everybody else that in my house again the other day another day and isolation and you know Mr president is certainly unprecedented times to say the very least but there was some conversation leading up to the draft should take place she did not take place I think rod when you go back to the free agency period I think America grasp it because it was sports for crying out loud and I think this comes at a perfect time in our isolation to have something to talk about do you feel the same way I I know a lot of people do and I've heard from a lot of people that they're looking forward to it like nothing else before certainly any of the NFL draft in the past it was a little scary to think about the document that we were going to do it but we're not ready and I think everybody's comfortable and so we're ready to go and ride it really has been impressed with the way that the NFL has stayed on schedule and I think for sports fans it's it's really been something of a celebration it's allowed them to kind of put aside some of the difficulties that everybody's been touring right now and in you know deal with the NFL which really is a year round league and I think it it's been a positive for a lot of people I can say somebody's got to put a sports castigate or every night it's been a positive for me and I know I've talked to a lot of people just appreciate the fact that they've got something that's ongoing in this really sets up Thursday Friday and Saturday tonight tomorrow Saturday which are really I think for sports fans all over you alluded to could be very important I think it is and I know our fans will be coming down I wish we were drafted early each day and it'll be great for fans around the country and not be a lot of talk about the the draft the players what this means to the teams have been put together and and hopefully it does start to get us back to normal the whole country obviously in years past rod there's been one hell of a draft party there in Allen park and sadly because of cold at nineteen obviously that's out of the question however the good news is this the alliance very proud to be hosting a virtual draft party presented by our very good friends and some very very good friends Miller lite that is going to be through Facebook and YouTube channels this is gonna be pretty exciting under difficult circumstances rod yes just like everything else very different but everybody's kind of getting used to this will people put on the best virtual draft party we've ever done because I don't first one is one we do it we have no experience doing this but it's going to be great I'm sure of my project Miller lights support to me you know if if we were doing that I'd be on the stage right now recognized members a great sponsor and all our fans for being there and I I hope a lot of bands to an end and because of the virtual draft because it's again it's another diversion of another way to kind of stand touch with what the team's doing Hey rob what's it been like to watch things start to take shape with the team as they get ready for this draft and you know we've seen on NFL live the tour of pop's new office at home and how things come together those things don't just happen this is this is been a real effort by teams around the league and the team right here to try to put yourself in a position to adapt to whatever the situation is and make it work I can't say enough about our I. T. partminer football staff and we've we've done soon because we've done Microsoft teams calls conference calls and yeah I know you've seen Bob desperate I'm looking at my desk right now I have a surface laptop a large green three phones desk in paper everywhere I've got a generator so my TV is here so you know if whatever happens we're prepared we we have we have to follow back to paper and smoke signals will figure it out we'll get we'll get the draft in there you know we know Bob Quinn is going to have I. T. director Steve Lancaster in his driveway for the proceedings Roddy makes you feel any better I love to park my vehicle in your driveway and I used to work at radio shack if something happens I I should be able to jump in I'm sorry call has to be ended right now it you know I it offers something that would be unique I am very much appreciated but not useful we know the NFL works with charitable efforts all year long to do it with the trapped on this year and an alliance of honed in on feeding America rod which is so important and some thoughts on on what you're doing in any involvement because it hasn't just been feeding America really since this began the organization of the Ford family and and players within the team have been reaching out to help people in the community help first responders and do everything they can in this situation yeah we're obviously in unchartered territory here and there so many people doing the right thing by staying home but that means that maybe don't have a job or income of food issues and so we we chose feeding America was one of the national organization for the week supported and we work with them last year at thanksgiving and box fifty thousand meals and so we program again and we know that they'll do a great job of getting food to the needy here in Detroit and that's on top of things our players have done including donations to a power plant to help them circling gowns and masks for hospital workers we paid for food trucks to players to go to the hospitals and we kicked off the feeding America grappling with a big donation from the team and then mapped and Bob and I will be making donations whatever tech so hopefully our fans tune in and participate and support the same organization and most that money's gonna stay right here to trade with the people that are supporting the team and doing the great work for us on the front line you know right during the ugliness of called in nineteen and as we prepare for the draft and hopefully a season to follow I think that provides so many people with a little bit of hope here little light at the end of the tunnel if you will that being said in your conversations with other presidents around the league as we are having this conversation today is there confidence in any way shape or form that the NFL season will begin as scheduled with or without fans you know we have a gallon of those contingencies do you buy I think right now the league is planning their trip through this weekend with the draft schedule release coming up there after and then we'll start looking at what's possible I think the first big measuring stick well can we start training camp on time and that'll be based on what the best medical advice and the safety for the players the coaches stands up we can have bands of training camp and from there we'll go into what the season could look like but right now we're planning for a regular season on time and hopefully that's what happens as I said many times you know the regular season would start for you know four and a half months from now right up for half weeks ago we were all working in our office is still so it's hard to imagine what four half months will you know will be available to us and I'm not going to protect and hopefully this is behind us so we can get back to playing football and every people enjoying the sport to be in the stadiums and we're going on our team that's part of what these next couple days are all about tonight tomorrow is Saturday and I I know as an organization you gotta be real about the ability to to do what everybody wants to do and that's to get better and that's what the NFL draft is all about it's about hope it's about adding guys that you believe are gonna be a big part of your future this is an exciting couple of days yes European and we're looking forward to adding the number of players will help us not only this year but in the future and this is the real foundation of the team we appreciate your time as always thank you very much for getting our coverage going here all the best to you and yours and looking forward believe you made a senior very soon good how are you here to got a great hearing our voices and take care and be safe thank you for best your family we appreciate that we remind everybody about the virtual draft party that's going on right now so you can hang with us we can hang with alliance virtual draft party as well they're gonna have experts on talking about each and every day can be.

"The Frank Beckman show news talk seven sixteen WJAR I welcome back in the program let me once again thank my buddy Steve Courtney for the great job he did on Friday co hosting our hours on the salvation army radio Stephen great work you know too often things like that are just taken for granted and I want to make sure it's not I know for our listeners should start and I just want Steve to know his partner noticed as well in Chris run like you to the hard work you put in I'm just trying to keep us on track is that's hard enough all right let's welcome our next guest into the program he's been with us many times before his former speaker of the house here in Michigan and if for some reason our our esteem two U. S. senators could not I could not bring it upon themselves after he was nominated to fill a job that's been open for three years on the west side of the state and this isn't some political appointments directly this is the U. S. attorney's role in the western district of Michigan this man was nominated by president trump and the only reason that our two esteemed U. S. senators wouldn't vote for him is because they're Democrats and he's a Republican that's it it's it's it's I'm putting the people of Michigan and forgetting about them and putting their needs second to your political whims that's what they have done I'm sorry to put it that way but I'm revved up this morning friends if you couldn't tell and it just ticks me off that they would never ever take one step to fill that job okay how may we get paid they're judging there he can legalize heroin in math on the streets like he wants to hi is that right for president anymore we we can get him in there Hey Eric the Manisha B. in there right now it's winds up with a better job they generate a lot more money is going to probably have a bigger impact on all of us here in the state of Michigan from his new role because he has he's just been hired as a partner and leader of Plunkett Cooney's new government relations public policy and regulatory practice group his name's Tom Leonard is on the other end of our life graduations Thomas happy for you my friend Hey good morning my friend thank you very much and to put in perspective how the good lord done a lot one door shut and open another it was actually at the parade companies practice back in November in Detroit I drove down there to try to chat with senator Peters defeat he would at least take a meeting with me about the the pending nomination and while I was there a random to Doug burns dean one of the senior partners at Plunkett Cooney we started chatting and then once the confirmation fell through he and I started to chat and here I am I'm going to going to become a a partner there be leaner government relations group so I am excited about this well I and I know your heart is in public service and you would have done a terrific job out there in the western district of Michigan is the U. S. attorney but you know look all things happen for good it seems in life and and this is going to be very very good for you yeah I know I am very excited about it I mean I loved tackling big issues for our state yeah this is one of those unique situations where I'm going to be able to do that from the private sector Plunkett Cooney has an incredible firm and this was one niche that they were they were lacking they really didn't have that government relations side of things and I'm gonna be able to come in there and fill that gap work with they and outstanding teen incredible firm again I'm just excited about it well and I'll tell you what in your free time if you can teach Doug burns dean how to hit a sand shot in golf E. you're you're really going to be a hero there that's all okay did not tell me that he with the golfer Ian I will have to we'll have to chat about yeah yeah you got to get out to read run with them and when you see him in a bunker you understand he's as bad as I have a blog or settle congrats on this but what exactly will you be doing in this new role with Plunkett Cooney with government relations public policy regulatory practice yes so much of this I will be registering as a lobbyist today met much of this is going to be representing clients through the legislative process monitoring legislation building relationships for them making certain that we can offer our clients those services if they need them you know there are several other law firms throughout the state they do have government affairs people on the ground we want to make certain that that if he appointed Kunis clients had a situation where perhaps the bill was going through the legislature and somebody needed to monitor that or they need to work on that for them they have somebody on the ground to do that versus having to send them somewhere else view the full beautiful and and for you this is as we said a great great opportunity working with one of the top law firms here in the state of Michigan so we congratulate you on that as well you must be very proud yeah no absolutely again I could be more proud that when you look at the reputation they have not just the sterling legal record reputation but when they approached me about working there I get a lot of research on the type of work environment that they have and not only are they one of the state's top law firms they're also one of rated one of the top places to work in the state of Michigan so I am very excited that I found somebody or found a firm to work with that can strike that balance between family and work not good for you and and Tom Willis said do you think take you once and for all out of the the political game you know my heart is in public service Frank we'll see where that goes but right now I am one hundred percent focused on Plunkett Cooney I'm one hundred percent focused on building out the best government relations practice group that I can't that's what my focus that is that but again my heart is in public service will see a door opened down the road but for right now I am one hundred percent focused on Plunkett Cooney in building this this out for them if you graduations on this I don't know who's going to wind up holding the mantle of biggest Michigan fan your drug merged in there that's going to be a battle that that'll be fun will you will enjoy that are you willing to let him go ahead and get I'm sorry and I am and I wanted to Chris did a wonderful job I think it was a week or two ago he may have a future seven at C. one day M. I. C. yeah absolutely one day yeah maybe sooner than you realize we shall see he we'll make sure we we put up a board but no you're right he he does a terrific job filling in whatever he does here at the station he does a great job and and and you've done the the same yeoman's work in any position you've held we look forward to continuing our relationship now you're in private practice of pocket Cooney affirm that we deal with quite a lot here at the station and on this program and that we can't wait to to talk with you about your new role as time goes on absolutely well thank you so much for your friendship and I look forward to our continuing the relationship in chatting with you soon so we congratulations again Tom Leonard the former speaker of the house and now the it is new role as partner leader of Plunkett Cooney's new government relations public policy and regulatory practice group I was told I should call you the boss so I'll.

"Steve Courtney Sean believed you well good afternoon to you certainly happy holidays walking into another alliance game day your alliance making their way through the schedule they wouldn't have it any other way it is been a lump of coal as far as the twenty nineteen season goals lines were going to Denver to face the Broncos in less than two hours or so having lost seven straight meanwhile the Broncos they're not qualifying for the NFL's post season either there are five nine football teams to Courtney here happy to have you here with us let's bring on my broadcast partner the one the only shop Allegiant very excited for the proceedings about to start yes Steve no doubt about it and first and foremost happy holidays merry Christmas to you and yours I know it's a special time for you like it is so many others out there and first order of business we got some football to take care of today in the mile high city and it's interesting because I think the Denver Broncos may be better than the record indicates but with that being said a lot of close but no cigar your what your record in case is a five win team again to three one team well again Hugh know things have gone completely sideways for the Honolulu blue and silver again remember after that two oh one one start they would go to three three in one and then the bottom fell out right now three ten and one is the overall mark losers are seven in a row ten of their last eleven however this past week in Allen park Mrs Ford and the other powers that be present a rod would along I'm saying indeed Napper Tricia would be back for his third year as the head coach of the Detroit Lions did all general manager Bob Quinn he is maintained as well well you know what aids it it's interesting because Steve I think we've said all along I think three years is a good gauge with that being said it through the first two years of their a lot of positives no there aren't I mean let let's let's be honest and you kind of open that something up breaks for the lions next year and you see the W's start to become a plenty but with that being said I I think that that notice is out there that even if you get back to just simple mediocrity of of eight eight ninety seven that might not be good enough to to have them save their jobs nor should it be Steve I mean I I think if you if you make a move from a nineteen seventeen to just make the playoffs and and it takes you two years just to get back to nine seven but come on now and so that you would be looking at next year let's hope it doesn't get to that you'd love more than anything for it to catch fire and and kind to continue the start today had this year but there's a lot of hope attached to that well the lines battle cry as it is with a lot of teams in the National Football League injuries happened look how many times have we said that as is lying in season has unfolded but quite honestly and when you take a look at the big picture the lions roster Sean has been absolutely decimated because of injury as a matter fact alliance have now had ten starters placed on injured reserve this year that includes eight in this month alone it's incredible it it really is and it's going to happen you know I I think Steve one thing that that many are guilty of I am very guilty of this is thinking that the death was in increased dramatically in this off season we've seen through the course of the season that that it has not been you know Depp certainly has been an issue for this football team and that's on Bob Quinn and I think Bob would be the first guy to say that all right well we've got much more to discuss with you as it applies to the upcoming tilt with the Denver Broncos you don't sadly I I just have to get this off my chest one alliance season comes out in April you see that they're going to Denver at this particular point in the year you're thinking you know what is gonna be pretty cool if if it's a meaningful game changes are to be moved to Saturday and there's nothing better I loved watching National Football League yeah total yesterday totally maybe a little snow all in Denver whatever the case may be we never got to that you know what I'll pay you back on that and I will certainly validate what you said because you and I have talked about that privately yeah schedule came out like how cool would it be to have that late afternoon game you know maybe a four thirty start from from a mile high age ages fine in the the drive home after hopefully a win but it was not meant to be what what we do know is running back carry on Johnson will be in that lion's lineup that has not been the case since October and he wants to play if you're screaming at the radio right now saying why would you play in the game means nothing Kerrier Johnson's that played a whole lot since he broke into the league in a second here so you may not seem get some work yeah and and Steve you know what he has to start proven the narrative wrong the narrative on carry on Johnson's you can't stay healthy and and the only way to stop that nerve is stay healthy and and hopefully this is a string of you know you look you look back ten years ago when people say those things about Matthew Stafford that kind of seems silly now doesn't even in lieu of what happened this year but it be great if you could see some kind of string like that come together for carry on Johnson over the course of the next few years all right those of you who are out and about tying up some loose ends Christmas day just three days away thanks a lot for put Nisan Steve shown here with you what else is going on with the lines today.

"Ford field here are Steve Courtney and Sean beleaguered good morning once again my friends walking into another alliance game day right here online is ready nice to have you with us Steve Courtney Shamba lesion indeed manning our post here in pride plaza get me a set for this upcoming tell you know what clearly not word alliance wanted to be again you're talking about a franchise that began this campaign to all in one as they say those were the days right now Toph very tough time for the alliance having lost six straight nine of the last ten more injuries than the law should allow again not an excuse just fact no that's the reality of the situation right now Steve if you're gonna talk about you have to talk about everything has there been poor play sure there has there been flawed sure there has but it is well we're not doing our job we don't include that injury factor not tell you what I'm just watching the fans stream and that's fans in the world this team is strong we all know it and these plans are all coming into this game they love their lines regardless so tip of the cap to the fans today there's no doubt about that and let's find a way to beat the Tampa box well and the Buccaneers come in playing some ball under first year head coach Bruce Arians they have won three straight their quarterback Jameis Winston a lot of conversation about him going into this still because if you can't have success with the quarterback Whisperer tarian of what what are you gonna do well turns out last week for example Mister Weston threw for a career high four hundred fifty six yards to go along with four touchdowns in their win over the colts but he did throw three more interceptions and he's got a league high what twenty three it's a it's a strange year steam he's on pace for it if I'm not mistaken thirty two touchdowns twenty nine interceptions in over five thousand yards I mean so it's it's crazy and you know you take a look at some of the numbers is receivers just put up he's got a special thing going on with my cabbage he'll be out but god what is definitely a guy that you have to look at other some speculation that Cameron brate a bite might light up as as like a wide receiver R. O. J. Howard so there it's going to be interesting he's got some weapons there's no doubt about that and this is a guy that can torture well the fact of the matter is the Buccaneers a one dimensional offense because the running game is nothing special nothing special at all no but they will air it out as often as it takes yeah it's it's interesting make they come at you and this is the National Football League today Steve it's what can your quarterback due to the opposition and what can you do to the quarterback there get nasty others no doubt about that that's one thing that the lights are really good after be worried about is what that Tampa front does against a let's face it a patchwork offense of line from alliance perspective no question and since number nine Matthew Stafford went down with the back situation this alliance offense generating a meager sixteen point six points per game that being said David Blau the rookie out of the university of Purdue will be making his third National Football League start let me just say this had a chance to have a conversation with David Allan park on Friday you'll hear that conversation coming up as the countdown continues a here's relishing this opportunity not the way he wanted it modular because of injury but you know what he is focused he is excited he's very very positive and you know what he's portable tape together well he is an evil eye again Steve I think one of the double the use for this year and there are many W's later on the the score board or or otherwise what I really like what coach babble has brought to the table he's kind of tailor made his offense of game plan to work around the lawyer as opposed to have the player working to his system and I I think that's a really been a good look for the twenty nineteen to trade lines where we say that the alliance have been bit by the injury bug were just not as they say Whistlin Dixie seven officers starters from week one will not be available for the still with the Buccaneers you know the drill inactives come out at eleven thirty there could be some more significant names on that list there it will sure with the word becomes available meanwhile the beat goes on we're gonna find out even more as to what's going on with our lives today we are two hours away from kick off at Ford field for a preview of today's lions today here's neck riding the lines the Buccaneers are getting ready to square off for the fifty eighth time in NFL history and Detroit leads the all time series thirty one to twenty six and well this season hasn't gone as planned head coach Matt Patricia is still trying to improve this year we're just trying to get better this week we got a lot of young players out there that are trying to get better and certainly for us I think every season is a process I think every season you start over in the NFL that's something that you know I learned a long time ago each team is is different from year to year there's always changes that are involved there and you try to get to do the best job we can to to build and those guys that are you kind of your core players that you know stay with you you hope they improve and they can grow as leaders in town you know build off of them that's really what we're trying to do so for us is just building offensively for Detroit they'll be without Marvin Jones junior who was put on injured reserve this week with an ankle injury Jones is tied for second in the NFL and touchdowns with Buccaneers wide receiver Chris Godwin and one behind teammate Kenny gala day for the league lead but quarterback David Blau says it's next man up yeah you know it's it's a bummer from our he's had a great season it's frustrating for him and you know it's the next guy up and then we'll be ready to go with whatever we get out of work to to move forward and you know keep keep on our goals whether it's been running backers quarterback inside and you know we've we've had to go next man up a lot this year and there's been a lot of guys who stepped up and and we'll try to some extra Bucks come into today's game with a top three offense in the league and a bottom three defense they're also carrying a three game win streak in the Ford field but why in center Frank rag now says his team is still focused on one thing I want when I mean.
