"A heartbreaker for Scotland. That goal by Luca Modric made it 21. He made history, becoming his country's youngest goalscorer, and all those two declarations sealed the deal winning 31 and leapfrogging the checks into second place. They have a nervous wait to see whether they will qualify in the third place playoff position. Sorry, it means England could play one of France, Portugal, Germany or Hungary at Wembley Goal score. The FCCs Big Bet on Elon Musk

"Tucked away in the snowy woods of the colorado rockies is a cabin called wolf lodge. The cabin is about eleven thousand feet above sea level. It overlooks the surrounding mountains. And yeah it's pretty off grid. Cell service is thirty miles away. The closest landline five miles away. No power lines. No water lines sure hiccup here and there are no roads boston. The cabin does have high speed internet. The internet comes from starling. A satellite service developed by spacex. The company founded by elon. Musk and the. Fcc has made a one billion dollar bet on starlink. Sterling has the potential to change our skies and how we connect online but there are a number of challenges to overcome. If it's going to succeed here to explain starlink recruits sarah morrison. Hey sarah eight thirty. So we've had satellite internet for awhile for for decades right. What makes starling different than what we had before. So startling promises that it's going to provide faster and better satellite internet for the things that the pandemic really showed us. We need streaming video virtual meetings for like school doctors. Basically anything where you don't want to be a lag. Traditional satellite which is geo satellite is a couple satellites really high earth orbit and they're in a geosynchronous orbit basically move at the same speed that the earth rotates so they're sort of always in a fixed position. There's a couple of them they can cover a lot of the surface of the earth but because they're so high up there is that lad they have a reputation of being slow and expensive So what sterling does is what's known as the elliott internet basically which is they put like thousands of satellites in lower earth orbit And then they have inter connected constellation which means the other much closer to the earth. There's less lag. And i mean starling ca saying it can be cheaper to the consumer than you know. It's of geo satellite rivals At least for now and in the hope is that the communities that just can't get trishul broadband there to wrote to realistically connect them to anytime soon. If ever they'll still have access to internet that you know is just as good and be able to do the things that they need

Australians Under 50 Are Advised to Avoid the AstraZeneca Vaccine

"Been a massive week. Obviously there's been a lot of stuff that's come out especially about the the main basket that australia has put most of its vaccine eggs into which is astrazeneca. There's been revised advice about which groups of people should get it and really. They're advising against people getting if they under fifty which is a pretty big part of the population. so norman. what happened for the Sterling government make such a big coal astrazeneca. Well the took the time about it. You know we've been talking about now for three weeks on chronic casts. It's really been hard to escape that this is causing fact. Because of the very peculiar nature of this clotting abnormality where it's an antibody response to the platelets which both through juice the platelets and make them sticky causing clot so very unusual circumstance which many hematologists would never have seen in their career and it was happening. Predictably between four maybe fifteen or twenty days after the vaccine in a very very small number of people but enough that they've decided that it is a cause and effect relationship small number of people but the authorities were causing per million type situation when the data from germany said one on one hundred thousand and then even the uk where they were in a bit of denial to when they started looking they find one and two hundred fifty thousand. And there's no over two hundred cases there still. The denominator is so many millions of vaccines. It still is rare and unusual and for some reason does seem to be more common in younger people possibly because of some variation in how the vaccines been rolled out according to age group that that remains to be seen

"Tickets october well. It's been one month since the election despite all the vote counted of left. No actual question that joe biden one president trump and vogel group of his supporters have kept contesting the results. There's no proof of anything major. Going wrong and judges keep tossing out the challenges. So now we're into conspiracy theories that are getting harder and harder to follow about voting machines hugo chavez and china and that has led to low profile election officials now needing police protection all gone too far. This is gabe sterling. He is the voting system implementation manager for the state of georgia. Joe jennifer today. Ask for chris. Crabs a patriot. Who ran sessa to be. Shut a twenty something tech county today. Has death threats a noose put out. Things should be hung for treason. It has to stop mr president. You have not condemned these actions or this language senators. You've not condemned this language or these actions. This has to stop. We need you to step up and take a position of leadership show som- sterling's press conference earlier. This week struck a nerve with people. It can be easy to dismiss. What's going on right now. Is crazier just what comes with our polarized political reality. But there's a real human cost to this sterling and other voting administrators around the country. Just pulled off the feet of a well run election in a pandemic. it doesn't matter that sterling is a lifelong republican calls himself just to functionary. He's under attack for doing his job. I wanted to know more about what this whole experience is like for the people living through it. So sterling is my guest. This week we talk about the election and how he thinks. We got to this dangerous place and i asked him about where the gop stands and all this infighting over georgia results has split sterling's party. The president has attacked the governor. Both republican senators have attacked the secretary of state and all of them are republicans will need to come together next month when georgia holds two more senate elections if they want to keep their majority in the senate. So here's my conversation but gave sterling. Thanks for being here on the ticket. So can you just take me back to start to election night when you start to get the sense that it's going to be a weird period for you election. It wasn't in fact an election night. We were sort of victory lap mode considering what had happened in june with the new system that there was a a couple of counties that really screwed the pooch reflected on us so we work really hard to avoid lines. We were really hard to get people to do. Pre election day voting. So we were really churning and burning and we were doing great and the results sorta come in doing great. And i've been around politics except for while at this point. More people know about this up to us to be political consultants and it was a candidate a couple of times. I was on city council. So i kind of know this us i lived in. Dc worked on the hill. I was a really good boat counter. So when i start looking with coming in and was out. It was really wednesday afternoon evening when i kinda knew. Basically we've talked to offset look. Does it gonna get hard. Why because given what's out there right now the presence gonna lose by about ten thousand votes. He may not walk. We'll keep looking at it. This was out there still to come in from the larger companies from the absentee ballots. That the bad part is the way kind of came. In because the large urban counties which houses the democrat base happen to have more votes and happened to move slower. But that's always been that way and that's why we kind of knew there was an issue starting around then but we've done everything we could and had a real secure election. We had put together an absentee ballot portal. Which is better way to identify people for their ballot requests and all of our stuff is available for a look inspection the entire apps ballot program and everything else in the funny part was both sides. Were kind of holding fire because they didn't know which one going to come in. I couldn't start attacking the state until i knew who had really come in. I so they all both gonna held off for about a week or so and then it got to the point where it was. Obviously the president fallen behind slightly and nearly everything was in and we had gotten into that first week to get ready for certification of the counties and then from there we have. The friday was the last day of the military ballots to come in after the election. Day tuesday and for all the cures to be done for any problems on the absentee ballots. And that's really close everything out and get everything uploaded so really by monday. Tuesday kind of this is where we're going to give or take fourteen thousand boats and when you when you think back on just this past month would you. If you could right at this moment get in a time machine and tell yourself on election night. What this month had been like at. Would it make any sense to you at that point like how this is unrolled this to be. Now look back. Then what are you talking about. We had a great election. Is everything's great so because the problem is some point you start dealing with irrationality. The law is a new law for our state on the section where we basically had a pre certification audit. We had chosen several months ago to a risk limiting audit now in a normal situation. Let's say you have a margin of like five percent or six percent you'd go around and you would do a statistical sampling. The tool you put in it tells you equal ballots. Seventeen from magister and habur sham county. And you take all those you put him into running algorithms that you're at ninety eight percents certainty that the outcome of this election was correct from these machines to say that the machine scanned everything perfectly but in this case the presidential race. That point was point. Two eight percent was the margin and so we made the decision to do the presidential race as a risk limiting audit and since it was so close essentially had to do a hand retali- that was when the first disinformation that the dominion voting systems were flipping votes right or doing algorithms or doing fractional votes are all other happy crap. "I'm going to go into much detail here because this is a topic. We have discussed with other guests including patricia. Church land in episode one fifty eight. The key thing to remember is that being warm blooded allows mammals to do everything faster. Move faster see faster. Think faster sterling's book also details some of the changes that appeared in primates and key features that are unique to humans but his main priority was discussing. How our design leaves us vulnerable to what he calls diseases of despair. If you're like me these last few months have given you. A new appreciation for our need for social connection but sterling's focus was on the longstanding role of dopamine as i mentioned early on dopamine has been with us since are single celled ancestors. The key idea is that the system is designed for small surges of dopamine. But the irony is that modern social conditions expose us to large surges from drugs over eating. Even thrill seeking adaptation is a feature of all receptors. this means that over-stimulation causes the receptors to down regulate. then we find ourselves needing more and more to feel the same level of satisfaction another important principle to remember when thinking about the dopamine reward system. Is that it is stimulated by surprises. Both positive negative. We've all had the experience of getting more enjoyment out of the anticipation than the actual outcome or an achievement. The most obvious consequence of this principle is the writing tide of drug addiction. Dr stirling emphasized that current approaches. Do not take our stasis into account. Here's what he said. And we have to live happier more integrated lives. And i think allah stasis and the idea of human design is. We are designed highly. Intelligent highly cooperatives inventive. And we have to live those lives. We can't avoid living healthy lives in hope that some drawn will help us. Actress sterling also talked about how these same principles could change our approach to the so called diseases of modern life. I found dr sterling's riding compelling because of its emphasis on both are continuity with other species but also on the unique qualities that make us human. I want to focus on how we can apply these ideas to our own personal lives. How can we re calibrate our reward systems so that small dopamine surges. Give our life a sense of satisfaction. Whatever our personal circumstances. I we need a conscious intention and an appreciation that it can be done. It's easy to get into a rut where everything in. Our life is expected and predictable. But that's not necessarily healthy. Can you make room for small surprises and the unexpected. I still remember that when i was in high school. My favorite class was actually p e because something unexpected could happen in p. even if it was scary like someone wanting to beat me up whereas all other classes were kinda boring because i always knew exactly what was gonna happen so this role for small surprises in the unexpected might be related to the fact that our brain health depends on learning new things. Perhaps the only thing you can do is learn new things but that is its own reward besides the role of surprise the other principal. I hope you will remember is the idea of creating small pulses of dopamine so that we can recalibrate are receptors. I asked dr stirling for his advice for how we could do this and he said i off will need to remember about sharing because we are wired to be social and also spiritual practices and doing art and making music. He contrasted this with the mini boring. Repetitious jobs that exist today and he actually commented that the only way you can do some of these jobs is to be stoned. So it's not a coincidence. That drug abuse has skyrocketed. But even if you're in a bad job you still play an instrument join other in sacred practices. whatever that means for you write poetry. Seeing play music go to church. My own small suggestion or addition to the list would be keeping a gratitude journal to help us to focus on those small events in our lives that are rewarding but that we tend to discount. Finally he said we have to remember our responsibility to each other. I usually close my interview by asking for advice for students. Some going to close this section with dr stirling's answer to this question. I think you have to just be ready to rethink what people are telling you and use your own eyes of the nerve science and medicine. I think a lot of things that you can see with your own is that you can make second south. You have to use your own eyes and really think hard to see if what you're being told is true and right now for example in my neighborhood here i see. I tweeted this the other day. A local farmer dumping a nerve gas insecticide on his tomato plants to kill cut worms but his destroying all beneficial insects and so when the time comes to re famish agriculture. It's going to be hard because people are going the environment so i right now feel like medical students. In science students need to be paying attention to the environment area very seriously and climate change. Otherwise it's that is coming astor. And i'm very concerned that focus on that more than on.

"More of my conversation was Sterling K. Brown I time walking through Washington Square Park you from the Mid West and you see like rake dances. You see people playing music you see the old dudes playing chess. You got the students coming from nyu cutting through like sort of this magical vast Cornucopia of people spilling into an all these different things like this is New York City. Like I'm in it dude. I love cut through any excuse that could to cut rushing square park. Yeah always took. It might get offered a few things he hadn't heard of before I don't know that's experience. I think the West fourth stop is over that way until we get off on West fourth line lived in Brooklyn and cut through here to get to school and it was just. I talked about people watching what I mean like. This is a place where you watch until everybody's watching now. This is a good moment because years ago school. Watch other people absolutely and now everybody in the spark is watching you kinda crazy. Yeah it's Kinda crazy every once in a while. I fool myself into thinking that I'm still an incognito event but then there's like people stop and they pull out the camera I guess I guess not anymore cameras out. I don't think our nine anymore. What do what do you feel though when you come back to New York and you get to walk around and revisit some of these places that were so foundational for you. I remember the post that the city offers right like it's a city that has heartbeat right. And you start to walk differently. I move faster. We're like a sense of purpose when I'm New York City and I love that hustle right in La. Is this kind of like you sitting in your car. And you're talking on your phone and your chilling but like you won't pick people to like whereas La you have to plan tonight people right but you can just walk around like a minute when I because it's walking culture your access to people you feel more connected in New York City that you do anywhere else in this country. Yeah subway to subway do all the time. And my publicist freaks out is like why is he taking the subway? I'm like because it's my right eye one of the people. I can take the subway anytime I want to go for a walk and I'm like I'm putting my hood on. It's GONNA be okay. I do feel like you said this. New York's a little bit better though like they might just give you like a man. What's The walking keep walking? Hey love you on the show. Thanks a lot appreciate it. It's pretty easy here and I see famous people on the subway all the time and they don't get that's right so it's it does give you a bit more latitude but I'm always surprised especially for this is us. You think people are more jaded or not so cool like they're more cynical in New York. This huge fans everywhere. Every shows got a really beautiful. And do you get the tears in person? They come up. Do they see you. They remember an episode. That WanNa talk about the show. I'll get to hear some person and then I can i. Can I hug you and I'll be like yeah man? I'm down for the hug and we just squeeze it. Sometimes they hold on. I was like all right. We they like and then they're like. Oh that's the power of your show. That's the work. "Episode of The Sunday. Sit Down podcast. My thanks as always for clicking and listening along with us my guest this week. It's not a good one. I think Actors Sterling K.. Brown know him of course as one of the stars of the hit. NBC Show. The people have to watch with a full box of tissues. This is us the tear jerker now in its fourth season. An amazing cast of which Sterling K.. Brown is an Emmy and Golden Globe. Winning the member joining me now is always the producer of this fine podcast and the producer of these sterling K.. Brown interview for this week Maggie Law. Hey Maggie before we get to the important business of this interview. Some more important important is we spoke last. Maggie law is engaged. Take a nice walk yes. My eyes are blind reflection in this fluorescent lights lights. Thank you so much thank you. Thank you like me yet your fiance for one hundred years one hundred Actually ten mm-hmm we met at a boarding school and we've been dating since the end of junior year of high school. Yeah so so we share that. Yes Dina beginning junior in high school school right. We did it for a long time. Broke up a little while a little break and then we found each other again. But we'll say we did not have a little break ten years strong and here we are. I'm telling you deep deep roots are good for the marriage. Adulation Cam very excited. And let's talk about our interview Sterling K.. Brown is a guide met a couple of times. Didn't know well L. had really high hopes for the interviews faced on what I know of them is being sort of Like a smart interesting guy but also the serve electric speaker and presence presents exceeded everything. He was electric. I think it's a way to say it. He really I feel like he brought it to the interview. And just the nicest guy you just love when you meet them and they're just so nice and they say hi to everybody in the room just like there too. I feel like he really brought it one of those people. You hope they'll be who you think it was He I think part of that is is that he's earned his place. We talk a lot about this in an interview. He was sort of on this thirteen year grind small roles. TV He says. Look I was happy. Acting was paying the bills. I bought a house right but hadn't hadn't had that sort of big break in Hollywood and then in the fall of two thousand sixteen along comes people that was he'll he won the emmy for that right people versus Oj Simpson. We played Johnny Cochran. That was earlier in two thousand sixteen and then shortly after this is US comes up and that's it really was the crazy thing for I says now things are stupid. Good for always good now. They're stupid again a little background for people. I know you like to paint a picture picture in your mind as you listen to these interviews of where we are where a place called the public theater New York City of famous famous place that so many of the actors adventures every famous actor you know has played a part there started there in New York City And we're upstairs in the library there. Yeah Sterling actually. That's what he asked to do. The interview it's one of his favorite spots. He went to Grad school at Nyu so right nearby and he said when he was in school there everybody dreamed of performing at the public at some point. You always I wanted to do Shakespeare in the park and everything like that. Eventually he got to do a show there. I think twenty fourteen and so he requested to it there that was great spot. And then you'll hear later we get up walk around a little bit in Washington Square Park and very cool moments of a place. He used to walk around dreaming of being somebody right in that business and you draws the crowd we walk in the park and boom like flies to honey came on to Sterling K.. Brown all those. This is US fans. His new film is called waves. It's a lot about fatherhood. He's Kinda Domineering Dad. In this movie he lost his own father in real life at the age of ten To me it was the best moment of the interview. You can listen. NC agree when he started just going into the story of the day. And I will say I in an interview setting. It's hard to sometimes because the lights and there's people around to get lost in the emotion it was as emotional as I remember reviewing really really feeling at that moment he was so first of all. I'm just grateful that anyone would share such a personal story. Absolutely has that with me Of the day his father died and he was ten years old. I have a ten year old son I think part of that hit me ask what would it be like if I left my ten year. Old Son unexpectedly early in in such a sudden way and he remembers every detail the day in he volunteered it. You know it's not something I would ask him to describe because it is so traumatic. which man did he go there? Yeah he did. It was really emotional but it felt special that he was able to share with you and significant. Because it's how he tapped into characters in waves but also in this awesome us a cathartic moment for him able to sort of say goodbye to his dad in a way. So seems were there okay. We've described the enough let Sterling K.. Brown tell the story himself Sterling K.. Brown right now on the Sunday. Sit Down podcast sterling. Thanks for doing this. Thanks for having me great to see a you know we got a Lotta history to talk about you in this neighborhood you in. This theater is my stomping grounds dude. I went to Nyu from ninety eight. Two Oh one I lived if that one asked a place right around the corner and so the public was this fixture like this beacon of when we get out of school. Maybe we'll get a chance to work at the public. Maybe we'll get a chance to do Shakespeare in the park and I've got a chance to work here on a couple of occasions and it's been magical every time I was telling you I've interviewed a number of actors who said I want to do the interview at the Public Theater. What is it about this place that so special for people who don't even know about? There's all these people that come through here right so you know like Meryl Streep Streep is done Shakespeare in the park Leeann have like you said I seen him do hamlet. You see all these actors crews careers you want to immolate and they could be off doing all these fancy movies and TV shows etc.. But they take time to make sure that that muscle of being able to tread the boards never atrophies because they care about the art of illuminating the human condition and that sort of what was embedded in my fiber at Grad School. Oh that NYU and so. It's something that I keep coming back to over and over again. I mean you look at the faces on that wall. It's every major actor you've ever heard of it's all all been here all of them and you too So we'll talk more about that but I said D we're walking in here. It's the highest compliment. I could pay an actor is I didn't know where to begin again with you. You have so much going on right now apprec- but let's start with the film waves. Yeah which is unique and different than anything. I've seen it tells a beautiful story and it really uses music. Well how do you describe this project when you first read it. Did you get what they were going for. That's that's a good question it's hard. It's complicated it. It is complicated because it's a hard movie to describe to people. It's a family drama that focuses more on the children of this family. It's an African American family mother and in a father a son and a daughter in the first half of the movie. SORTA is the sons half of the movie and the second half of the movie you kind of shift narratives and it becomes the daughters journey. There's a major tragedy that happens in the mid point. I'm not gonNA give away But it also is sort of shows is how a family deals with grief loss and how you keep moving forward with with grace and with love In the music is huge. which like even like I said in the script their music cues laid into the script? So you press a button. Listen to a song as you read the scene Our director writer Trey Atwood Schultz had something very specific in mind in the movies autobiographical. I should say and then leaps into narrative fiction and then back in autobiography and then to narrative fiction. Because I say that because he is white right and the movie focuses on an African American family but because he hired Kelvin Harrison junior to play the role of the son in the family because they worked on a film before it comes at night. They sort of collaborated and said like tell me something about your childhood third about your father about what it was like for you to grow up in New Orleans etc and so they combined their narratives and came up with the story together and it was a real collaboration collaboration from the onset And I think we came up with something special. It is unique. It's unlike anything I've seen before you're in a position in your career where you can get a script and sort of decide whether or not it's something that's worth all the time you put into a role. What was it about this story that jumped off the page to you? Okay so I was shooting. This is us at the time and my agent. My manager read the script and he said we think this is pretty special. I was like guys like I got a job on the show. And they're like yeah but check it out. If you like it maybe we can make it work. First and foremost it was something completely really different than Randall Pearson whom I love and Adore. But now that you have the opportunity to not be locked into one character and to be known solely the character I try to take advantage of those opportunities whenever they are offered to me now to keep going with that point about ten years ago there wasn't the same sort of fluidity between film and Television Right and now that it exists. It's like I'm a kid in Candy Star on jump around and play and as many sandboxes as This guy was a father in in waves who is very much present For his family but it is a hard man not the easiest father to get along with and so what. I enjoy the challenge of inhabiting people who aren't readily likable But who are humane. Who are good and my goal is not to be liked but to be understood so I enjoy? Enjoy the challenge of finding someone who people be like..

"If you've been listening to this tale this tally meg low maniacal racially discriminatory cheap millionaire who loathed to being called Don or donald by his subordinates but loved putting his surname on properties he's and if that reminded you of someone guess what it reminded. Ramona also these sterling trump comparison is one as her reporting bears out one that was eagerly made by Donald Sterling himself. This is from the thirty thirty sterling affairs episode three sterling like putting his name on everything preferably in big Gold Letters Sterling Plaza Sterling Ambassador Tower Sterling International National Towers. When you look Donald Sterling you have a tendency to want to compare him to donald trump west sterling love that comparison in fact not invited he wanted everyone to think of him as rich powerful and dashing so in one thousand nine hundred nine he hired his longtime friend. Michael salesman to help him mm spread that message I got him on the cover of California magazine as the man who would be trump on the west coast there it is California magazine July one thousand nine hundred nine the man who would be trump in big white letters the comparison between the two Donald's is off in some ways but in an important way it's bigger than you may even realize so. Donald Sterling was ruthless brazen and mercenary but there is every bit of evidence that he was actually a true billionaire. His properties really were valued in the billions and that was an evaluation that a fake underlying to browbeat a Forbes Forbes reporter in order to achieve sterling was also actually was the owner of a major professional sports team not a USFL owning buffalo low bills reject tea and he was successful because he was so mercenary in fact one way to if not appreciate that understand surly sterling success is to realize that there is a bonafide case to be made that he played the NBA ownership game better than anyone else did. All the other owners were chasing championships so that means they often spent lavishly and got losing or mediocre records. Sterling erling on the other hand would spend parsimoniously and achieved these similar losing record. If you step outside the mindset that there's a morality to the attempt in winning that there is a virtue in striving to hoist a trophy and you just think of the way to keep score as the valuation of Your Franchise Sterling can be said to have played the game as good as anyone ever has a rational economic actor would look at the NBA and assess that all the franchises values values rose as the value of the League rose the value of the League would rise as franchisors try to outdo each other in building entertaining teams an interesting fan experiences because the fan experiences would drive ticket prices and that allowed them to pay higher salaries but if thirty teams this attempt this twenty-nine fail every year the best outcome would be to win all the time but since no team can win all the time the Optimal Strategy Ritchie is not to try to win but to draft off everyone else's attempts and to see your valuation go up with a guaranteed low expenditure which which is exactly what Donald Sterling did. It's what to some extent the owners of baseball's. Miami marlins tried to do with the previous owners of the Cleveland Cavaliers also attempted it makes sense and if you put the fact that Donald Sterling wasn't unethical operator in many many many other ways this strategy strictly speaking is not wrong now. Donald Trump on the other hand has never been so clever as to get himself in that kind of situation where he could just sit by as his partner or spend money and he benefits Donald Trump is a man who licensed his family name to a brand of stakes for a million dollars arguably devaluing his family name by much more than a million dollars with the failure of the brand extension but what Donald Trump does and here's where the comparison is really really on on target with Donald Trump does and what donald sterling did was never take their eyes off. The prize and the prize is wealth. It's not power. It's not success. It's not esteem. It's not women. They both had a character failing for women. The prize is wealth. Both men live their lives to accumulate wealth. The Donald Trump presidency is best understood as being born of profit motive and conducted in a slipshod haphazard to and fro way that defies every explanation except for this one through line the personal enrichment of Donald Trump not saying in trump's very good at it just that no one has ever conceived the presidency in this way I mean the founding fathers were worried about it witnessed the emoluments clause but donald trump trump is a pioneer. There are many different explanations for trump's motivations. You'll hear them all. They seem to be at odds but they're not. Let's acknowledge. He's in it for for ego gratification. He enjoys the adulation of the crowds. He can't help but lashing out at any criticism no matter how small or how true but the reason that trump is in office is not for power or self-aggrandizement these are abstract concepts for a non abstract thinker. Everything everything trump does is to make money. It's all he knows it explains all of his actions granted previous presidents have also had selfish motivations but selfishness in the case of those politicians was a political selfishness to get reelected or to advance their agenda or their status or the standing in their party party or of their party not trump he's Venal. He wants more money and if he leaves office more hated but more rich well. That's been the hallmark mark of his entire career his life and don't you doubt that he will tell us about it over and over again he'll brag about how smart he was as evidenced by how oh well his business did as the result of him being president and he will call his critics all bitter and he will call us all suckers and in this case for once he'll be right and that's it for today show just as produced by Daniel Schrader who also has holdings policies Blake Griffin's and doc rivers numbers on speed dial he also it being twenty nine thousand nine you to speed dial and if you have an impressive producers rolodex or simply want to acquire one come join the staff of the gist the associate producer position is open it calls for some creative bold and fun slate dot com slash jobs the gist for years. "The locker room walls. The new army bases used to the war of well-trained highly unskilled young men on this night the Falcons face the only other team located on domestic military base the Fort Knox Eagles. They call it the army ball all week. Falcons head coach Sean Burner has been reminding his team that this year's game special because awesome date on the calendar. You're not GonNa get another opportunity guys seniors. This is it. This is your last opportunity high school football and it's the last opportunity opportunity to play in this army bowl and it's scheduled on nine eleven. That's mean a lot to you especially for what your parents to guys make your parents proud every kid on the team every kid in that school in fact had at least one parent in the military and I was thinking about my time in Fort Campbell recently family and when I say time before Campbell how I would typically do. These reports is getting on a Monday. Stay with the team for week of practice and then cover the game. They played on on a Friday. The reason I was thinking about four Campbell is not because it's nine eleven not because of the wars in Afghanistan and inviting the Taliban Camp David not because football season started for Campbell specifically has been in the news for Campbell's on the front page of The New York Times a few days ago and I will tell you why after I play this next clip from my decade old report. The team runs an intricate no huddle offense that requires each player to think on the fly and the coaches know what the kids are going through off the field senior. You're Chris Allen says the biggest difference between playing for a team. That's on a military base filled. Only with military kids and playing on any other team is the difference between friendship and kinship. Alan wants played at a public high school office. You'd be down one day not they wouldn't even know your parents were gone. You'd be down one day be crying. They just asked what happened and you tell them and they'll be we like oh man because they haven't heard it before and they don't know what to do and then they would just let it go off but here everybody knows how what the feeling is and they had come for. You and it's just a whole lot better environment for this last. Year's deployments were worse than just frustrating the father of Josh Carter the senior leader of the defense was killed in Afghanistan even more than two hundred soldiers based at four Campbell of lost their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan. This was the first time in principle Dave Witty's four years at Fort Campbell that the parent of one of his students had died when word it came out of the death within within an hour I would say almost every coach was at the students house they were there to support. They were there to work. They were the kids came over and they're to support in there to work. So that's kind of a brotherhood. It was at least an acknowledgment that there would be sacrificed but it would be shared now. I'll tell you why four Campbell was in the news for Campbell is the military base that has been and denied a desperately needed new Middle School. The current middle school is so overcrowded. That's some students have to eat lunch in the library and the reason the badly needed the new school won't be built. Even though the money was set aside is that sixty two point six million dollars allotted to the Fort Campbell community and their new Middle School is is being taken from them in order to build a border wall between the United States and Mexico the thanks that the families who are the the parents at Fort Campbell which is to say the soldiers in our army. The thanks they are getting is that their kids will have to cram together some more to we'll have to sacrifice some more as if what they already sacrifice on an ongoing basis is not enough because our president could not through normal Democratic Appropriations Fund his signature project so that got me to thinking about Fort Campbell and a team the football team team that was a worrying attack squadron now the current four Campbell football team. I just looked it up. Owen three but back then they were unstoppable. Applicable happened to witness the fourth win of the season that would become an undefeated season culminating in a state championship so it was gratifying defying to be able to end that piece this way but also disappointing to realize just how much the sentiment that I expressed in two thousand nine ah no longer holds up using football as a metaphor for life is not unique to Fort Campbell a place where they're resigned to the fact that life's harsh lessons cannot be stopped but there's comfort in knowing that on Friday nights neither can the football team on the show today. I should feel about to rich men named Donald but first thirty for thirty is the ESPN series film and podcast and they are now out with a five part series about the La Clippers the worst team in the NBA now you may recall that the owner of the La Clippers. Should we say the erstwhile owner. Donald Sterling was caught making racist assist remarks on an audiotape recorded by his mistress vis-a-vis Yano and thus began the unraveling of Mr Sterling's Basketball Holdings Ramona Shelburne is the reporter who joins US next to talk about thirty thirty the sterling affairs.

"I listened to all five episodes of this podcast. It's a spectacular project <hes> ramona. I know that you've put in well. You covered uh-huh and you've really been working on this one way or another five years the amount of work you put it on this the amount of people that you got to go on to this one thing talk to people on the record so you need to get them to speak into a microphone about it. It's a spectacular piece. It's actually a piece of history the way i see it. What made you want to do this. Project five years on to revisit the so i remember reporting on this at the time and you sort of felt like you got dropped into a very strange movie like you couldn't make up the twists and turns and characters involved here if you try if you found a hollywood screenwriter they laugh at you. <hes> shelly sterling got her husband declared mentally incapacitated and sold the team out from under him after sixty years of marriage what kind of that really stages to the the racist comments that became public then the league banning him then the you know the the the the the team itself having to try to decide what to do about it and then they actually taking of the team away from him and this podcast covers all of those steps one clip that wanted to play from this podcast is where where doc rivers and blake discuss how close they of blake griffin how close they were boycotting a clippers playoff game against the warriors on april twenty-seventh two thousand fourteen. Let's take a listen. Listen to the clippers were right in the middle of the playoffs when t._m._z. released that donald sterling tape late on friday night april twenty fifth two thousand fourteen eighteen. You don't have to ask yourself with with black people so you don't have everyone had heard it. This was sterling's mess. Not the players and yet here was landing on their shoulders consuming assuming them even as they prepared the biggest game of their lives. Just remember at a team. We had to talk about it almost every time we met oh you know what i mean because there was that big of a thing clippers coach doc rivers try desperately not let it overshadow their drive to the n._b._a. Title and we're not going to let anything stand in the way of that so so this is one of the aspects that i didn't remember until in this podcast was how important and intense discussion by boycotting and again. This is a crowd that was in their favor of the world's watching this. This could have been a giancarlos. "Season. I've never seen clay too enthusiastic about anything so if michael says we're getting pretty excited. Did you think that's an ambitious time line. I don't think it's necessarily ambitious brian but there's there's obviously going to be the context of the warriors now and players <music> hurrying back from injury so there may be some hesitation in that regard. I'm sure the warriors are gonna want to take an extremely slowly. Some of this may depend on where they sit right. You know if there it are bobby marx predicted. They're going to miss the playoffs <hes> if they're battling for a real. It's a really good point -sition then then then maybe klay thompson ah look we know klay thompson the reason he played in the finals for crying out loud. He's one of the most competitive players in the n._b._a. And he wanted to play and if he's sitting there on the sidelines in the warriors are in the midst of a three game losing streak. He may say look. I'm ready to go. I'm cleared medically get me back out. These <hes> futures from caesar's might that'd be a bad bet at plus nine hundred higher than your rocket out that surprise me given <hes> with rockets have on that ross ran. Obviously the the fact that klay thompson is going to miss most if not all of the season nine to twelve months. I think is pretty typical for a to return from a tornado seattle. I think the best this case scenario for the warriors is klay. Thompson can get back at some point late in the season and then be something close to his normal self once the playoffs roll around and then if he is you know they've at least got a shooters chance yeah don't don't forget they got the russell and one of the reasons why they got russell was too so that they he could have an all-star slide into that spot. Get those minutes and play those those play that role and frankly you know if russell plays to the same level. He played in brooklyn last season. We'll see how it fits along with steph. It's not unreasonable to think that they are playoff team. Even if play doesn't come back <hes> and i think we all know it's an an injury that we're very familiar with sports fans with you and we've all covered players who've come back from a._c._l.'s typically when they can get get back on the court the following year they don't return to full perform until a year sort of the second season so i'm not saying the klay won't step on the court but i think we need to manage expectations. We've seen some players sit on an entire season. Listen from it. We've seen some guys come back seven eight nine months so but it would be something brian if the warriors are like. Let's say the seven six seven seed and klay thompson is back and ready ready to go for an opening round playoff series. That would be something. It's also a motivational factor for the team. You know it's like let's let's keep in this. Is we got to be in position. When clay comes back back with the team can sort of hang onto ignored during the season so michael thompson when he's talked about klay in the past. He's frankly been pretty active talked about contract trek situation and he seems to know things like some some fathers. You know it's not always true. <hes> let's aired. Fox was apparently happy in sacramento. He told one thirty seven p._m. Dot com that's.

"There never was that true rivalry and now we start having these storylines elaine's like tyler linked up into two rival was spurned by the lakers is now back with the clippers in a fun talking about tie is taco. Just sidelines really made. I think five six million bucks. He took this job because he takes a step down. You know you know it really limits. Maybe what he can do during the season prepare for next year. I think this is just really tie wanting to be part of the slip organization. I think it's a vote the confidence and the clippers and as you guys know tie is very well respected and well and also he has a close relationship with doc rivers remember. He had this role before he got the cavs job yeah so he went from he went from being issues with thai undocking no like those guys are really close. Doc helped launch him as a coach in this league and he's one of his proteges regimes and so. I think that that's really the draw here but you know the lakers in their salary negotiations. One of the main points was you know. Did he have offers from elsewhere. It's a demand that eight million dollars and it's taking less and this just in at the buzzer according to people magazine the westbrook has launched a westbrook <hes> <hes> west brown's brownstein green tech program sorry reaching a teaching skills at at risk inner city kids here in l._a. The program will train train students and careers by coating computer literacy computer engineering royce. You've known westbrook for a long time. What is this charity well. He's one of the most philanthropic players in the n._b._a. He's got his reading room. He's i think he won the community assist award once <hes>. It's really nothing new for for russell westbrook. He's one of the players that is as active as any player. There is is in both the community that he's playing with was oklahoma city which will be houston and where he's from which is los angeles. He's he's very active everywhere. He goes yeah well <hes> he could teach coding waiting to teach them how to make dunking video games <hes> thanks royston ramona and marc spears and the free so call your and tim mcmahon and all our other guests the jump is back tomorrow and we will see you then until then we're going to debate <hes> who should be the lakers center and you should be listening to the new podcast dot com.

Love that really appreciate you making the effort. Welcome to the now. Are your friends fees fee face visa. There's much. I don't know if we qualified what we'll try. <hes> twenty seven season <hes> you're doing great great putting gary numbers went to uconn. Guess <hes> what is <hes>. What's the transition been going from. <hes> power program like yukon to the w._n._b._a. Where you're doing great at certain pretty easy because because i think the programs are so similar and i think that's why they both had so much success because what they expect from their players is so high and so they get great results all right so. I know you have some gino r._e._m. At stories right. I have a couple. What's the best when you got <hes> the one that everyone likes. The most is <hes> one time. It was snowing really really hard so we didn't have a bunch of people at the game quiet and i had done something where coaches y'all got me. He's like so and everyone heard them. I was like guys keep running. Don't what he's screaming my name like that. I wasn't looking at him and so everyone brings that out because everyone now one of the things that megan w._n._b._a. Is the turnaround from college the season like that very quick quick so when you're talking about the transition that you have to make what's your process of going from yukon into professional basketball <hes> <hes> you know what was really quick going from like the final four to the draft graduating coming to minnesota but those two or three weeks we have <hes> before the season is kind of where you get all your kinks out yeah. That's where you're really learning new things and especially moving to the three when i played the four before <hes> that was kind of a transition transition for me i so that's kind of where i try to figure that out so you make the transition and make the also team in your first year. The only rookie make y'all certain replacing asia wilson right. What was it like when you found out you were named that all star team and all star game in vegas with liz cambay jr who is one of the great personalities w._n._b._a. It was really fun. I was so excited when i got that call and then in <hes> being <hes> liz you know they're trying to be a point guard shooting. Those threes six eight six eight trying to be a point guard back in people up. Taking a full court is really fun. You said that <hes> i read a story the other day that you haven't been too shy about the fact you'd like to win rookie of the year. It's typically an award the number one pick wins rookie of the i think nine out of the last eleven kevin house you weren't a high draft pick. So what would it mean to to win. Rookie of the year being lowered. It would mean a lot to me. <hes> is the goal that i set for myself. Originally before the season season started <hes>. I knew that i could do it and so i'd be in great and <hes> you know so close so you're all star coach. There was bill m._b. And he made some headlines because he was really upset that they provide first class travel for the w._m._b._a. All-stars can you tell us for those of us who are involved what he's w._n._b._a. Travel really like these <hes> personally i think are we haven't had any huge problems. It's different from college because we used to charter so we'd be gone unlike right after the game you better travel at uconn than you have champion minnesota lynx but that's the reality of the current w._n._b._a. Yeah i know a lot of other teams have had problems with their travel..

Clippers were a laughingstock. Perhaps the worst and most poorly run franchise in all of sports and trendy los angeles. Two things are consistent the lakers win and the clips lose but then in the middle of the two thousand fourteen playoffs. The clippers suddenly got more attention than they could handle when the whole world heard this tape bam. Ask yourself walking with black people in bothersome. That's clippers owner donald sterling <unk> arguing with his mistress. Why can't you be walking with black people. Does it matter why yellow i ah we're devoting this entire season to a five parts story. Top n._b._a. Reporters los angeles native herself and someone who's been following the story from the moment it broke. I must say that. I was rather naive when i bought the team in three different seasons. They didn't even win twenty games that makes them the losing est n._b._a. Team of the eighties eighties problems with the clippers owner ran deeper than mismanaging his franchise. He'd harass players as they ran up and down the court. Hey pooh pooh richardson. I'll pay you enough goddamn while the guys in the game put his hand on my shoulder. Rum and ladies muscles might mom's on the sweat a little bit. He just kept uh-huh balk. When donald sterling's mistress leaked tape it forced to recognise that it takes it's our game and we can have the players taking control and demanding change. These young men have millions of people following them and they know it all all land shut down a whole season. Donald sterling story is the n._b._a. Story but it's also l. a.'s story. His name was on half of beverly hills. He was the largest residential landlord in l._a. County i'm gonna use the term slum lord.
