"Away your turn to be heard here at WABC Russia. Hey, Curtis. Listen, I can explain this day in three words. Paul's plague operation. You know, that FBI and Homeland Security have declared white supremacists the most severe threat to the democracy in the United States and they can't track 40 yahoos online declaring a day of hate. But what do you mean Russell for hillbilly trouble Florida with no teeth? Or somehow made their way up and protested outside of a play? Well, what's the name of that play? Everybody's getting all bent on the ship. They went up to the Jewish sir, you and Joe will burn you. They choose should have just pounced on that guy. We need to be protected. What the hell happened? What the hell happened to us a society? Then we need squadrons of police to go rolling up and down the streets. And when I stopped him today and I said, officer, who are you chasing after? Extremists, white extremists. You know they are. I don't know who they are when I see them. Why are you looking for them today? Hitting you know? It's the national day of hate. They declare this. Who are they? And the cop looked at me and what do I care? I'm getting triple overtime. It's like Don Quixote, right? Chasing windmills. Where are they? Oh God. Anyway, let's go to Mike in Manhattan you are trying to be heard he had WABC Mike. The name of the play that is on Broadway that refers to its corporate. It was written and composed by Stephen Sondheim. The same guy worked on a little night music and in the clowns into the Woods Sunday in the park with George and they did the words, I believe, the west side story. Of course, how can you I play it every day when we talk about the illegal aliens from 1960, right? When landed Bernstein conducting but Mike legal evidence that came from Puerto Rico. Right, exactly. And nowadays, you couldn't even use that terminology would be considered politically incorrect. But let me ask you this question, Mike. We got foy hillbillies, came up from old Kyle, Florida, right? No teeth. Walking around with swatch to get us on their head, yelling at wheelchairs, perceived Jews as they were online to go see that play. And then all of a sudden, we're in lockdown on Saturday. What the hell is that? Well, people are then locked down the fact that the manual on Fifth Avenue they actually had their services outside. It allow fresco. Somebody was on lockdown. It was just the opposite. Who was threatening? The slide is it was on those encoded. Chat messages like Reddit and places like that and like I think like storm front that they were talking about. Mike, let me ask you a question. Do you trust government? For certain things I do and obviously some things I don't. All right, so I'd never trust the government. I'm not like what I'm doing. In this particular case, wasn't this a great distraction from our day to today problems? I'm not so sure about it. I'm not as I'm not as convinced as you are about it. Well, I'll tell you, I'll tell you what, Mike, I spent a whole freaking day running around. Looking for white supremacists with the guardian angels. Let's see, I went out to the guy who opened up his pizza parlor in the elmhurst, you saw that story, him and his son would have been stabbed multiple times by a black guy, he opened back up, he's defined. He said, hey, I'm selling pizza. We're going to be talking about pizza later on. It wasn't white supremacists who did that. I mean, I wanted to do my part. It's the leader of the guardian angels saying I couldn't find one white supremacist. Avery and I lost it, and I used to be good at what I do. I didn't think. I looked everywhere. I looked on the rocks, I looked in the subway. I walked through central parking. I saw the owl up there, you know. I could not find that one hater one white supremacist. Help me, ladies and gentlemen, please help me. I think I'm losing it. I really think I'm losing it. It's got a pauli calling from parameters your turn to be heard here at WABC pauli. Curtis, what do you think? Are we going to war with China? Why do you think we're going to war with China? All the blues are sending in? Wait a second. We're at a war with our own people. Amongst white people. I guarantee by 25, we go to war. They're going to destroy, they're going to take out our lectures. I guarantee it. I wouldn't trust China as far as I can throw them. What the hell does that mean Pauly? I can't trust them as far as I can throw China. Watch and they're going to disrupt our electricity. But I couldn't agree with judge Weinberg United States do without electricity. We have no water. Have you seen the con Ed bills lately? That has nothing to do with it. Oh, yes, it does. Nobody can afford the electricity anymore. This is what is going to happen. They're going to knock out electricity and we're going to starve. You're going to last maybe a week with the food in your house.

"Into the world. To wreck from Broadway, Stephen Sondheim and James le pines Tony Award winning triumph into the Woods is coming to D.C. with its Broadway stars to boot. The Washington Post raves, it's a priceless revival with a perfect cast. Don't delay or be misled. This critically acclaimed production of into the Woods is at the Kennedy Center, February 23rd through March 19th, tickets on sale now at Kennedy Center dot org. All can belong. Now, I made a point of mentioning that you undertook all of this while running for reelection because you correct me if I'm wrong there. When you won your first term, it was a bit of a squeaker. It was like one point or something like that. It was. And then you go and you do this with confederate monuments and all the stuff you were dealing with that you were just talking about, and then you win reelection by a bigger margin in the second term than you did in the first. Why do you think I did? Well, you know, it was a tumultuous time, Jonathan. I mean, we're dealing with the pandemic. We're dealing with economic upheaval and then we were dealing with social upheaval at the same time. And there were nights all nights of protest and unrest. And at times, a few times, that protest got a little bit out of hand, you know? We had we had a lot going on here in Richmond. And when my team and I, we went back and forth about what I could do. People on my team will send mayor, I don't want you to end up in jail or I don't want you to get arrested for removal. And so we waited to July 1 where we actually had the authority to do so, but we considered doing it before July 1 as well. And I will say, you know, when I think about the politics of the situation, I've always been the sort of leader Jonathan that thought, you know what? Elections be damn. Let's do what's right. Let's do what's right. And as a son as a grandchild of a grandmother who was raised in the south, my grandmother was raised in South Carolina. She was the woman who raised me, the woman I've seen as my mother, figure in my entire life. I always ask, I go back to asking the question, what would she do? What would she advise me to do in the moment like this? And my grandmother would say, do baby do what's right? Baby, do what's right. And that's sort of the voice that was always in my head, Jonathan, when I had to think about what movie should we take right here, do what's right. Yes, it could have cost my reelection. But at the end of the day, I could live with doing what was right versus not sitting on my hands and doing anything at all, not doing anything at all. A lot of times I think leaders, they kick the can down the road so that it's another person's issue.

"Yeah. Because it was different actors. It was actually, you know, it was sort of like when you watch a Gene Kelly. Exactly, and I'm like such a Jean Kelly fan and it was kind of breaking for him a little bit. Okay, so also just a reason one of the reasons I chose gypsy. And I'm always trying to bring it back to Stephen Sondheim. I mean, one thing that I find so fascinating about musical theater is it's really like this tiny group of people. First of all, like I said, it's a very American art form. Yeah. It's like we really are the country that invented musical theater. It's American opera, essentially. But only a really and musicals are so difficult to write and take so long to develop and require people to put so much money into them that only a small handful of people really in the history of American musicals has ever written musicals. There's literally I think it's like I mean, how many musicals do you think there are? 30? A hundred? Oh, I mean hundreds. But I mean, like, the ones that are iconic or like the ones that made money? Yeah. Yeah, probably 30. Probably in 20 of those. Maybe movies. Yeah. Yeah. But so the way the way that Stephen Sondheim came about is, as a musical theater writer, he had a terrible childhood. His mom was like super shitty to him and super abusive, but his mom was good friends with Oscar Hammerstein, who, at the time, he and his partner were like kind of running the monopoly on musicals. They did South Pacific in Oklahoma and all these shows. Right, right. So Hammerstein takes in Sondheim and becomes kind of like a surrogate dad to him. Right. And so that kind of like shitty childhood is essentially the genesis of American musical theater. That changes musical theater forever, because when Sondheim gets in the game, the formation of the baton goes from Hammerstein to that, right?.

It's going to take up to six months. There are many years of your life. You don't have a lot of time to think about it. You have to make these decisions. But I've had wonderful representation happened with the same manager. Her. I don't know, I think 30 years now. Lisa loose, mourn. Have been. You know, I've been blessed to have a lot of great people in my life film that that matters, too, Right? And you had a great partner who really understood and wanted it for you. And you know, because he was an actor. He understood how you know when he's I remember being altered. Sweeney Todd and my mother was living with me and And she was suffering from cancer. So I also had my mother to look after in her later years, and I was offered between each card and I said to Matthew, I don't think I can do it. Uh, it was at the Kennedy Center and I I I don't think I can do it with Mom and the kids, and he said, you've been offered a chance to work. Produce 20 times. Stephen Sondheim that's like playing for the New York Yankees. You can't say no to that. So he how right he wants, you know, And you know, we made it work. But he was generous in that way, because he was an artist. He understood that when you have great opportunities, you take them if you're an artist. You have to because they don't come that often. No, no, no. They don't want to come and that can come out of the blue and they can come at the most inconvenient time. When when Lily says to me, I don't know how I'm going to have a baby and a career that there's never a convenient time to have a baby whatever, of course, the most inconvenient being in the world. But I have two beautiful daughters and you know, and it all and their productive and you know, and wonderful human beings, so it did work out. In the end, if you could go back to theater, though, I don't know how with all the TV shows in everything. Would that be on the wish list now? Oh, yes, I would love I would love love to to do something on the stage again. Uh, you know, eventually, if I can, if I can keep it together, And when these television shows, you know they're not going to last forever. If I'm Fine. Um, I've been kicking up. I'll get out there back in the voice, but I want to thank you so much for sharing. Today We're excited about a race of the fifth season of the good fight. You've got to say it. It's really not only beautifully active, it's one of the It's so real that it's hard to believe you're watching television story. It incorporates no right and I think honestly, I think our season five is the best season. So if you've never watched it before, just tune in and watch the seasons and then you can work your way backwards. As you say, it's it's so smart and so thought provoking. I'm really proud to be part of it, and I have a feeling That you're wonderful people behind it really get you and know you because they capture the essence of Christine veracity. Funny. Well, you know, I've been right out there 12 years So they now know my strengths and they know my sense of humor and you know they they will often right for Things that they know I can do. And then I've had wonderful chemistry with various actors with a guy who plays my husband, Gary Cole. They they like to write. Means between us because we have a great chemistry as actors. So you know, there's a lot of these set for long run of anything in the theater or in, um in, uh in television because it allows things To develop and grow and divan. You know if you can do the 12 years.

"Broadway play can be staged by the most talented people in the world and still be a flop. As the song says, the opening when your heart beats like a drum, the closing when the customers won't come. So many things can go wrong. When a new show titled up appeared at the new urus theater, the producer suddenly panicked. When they looked up at the Marquis, it said, up your wrists. The title was quickly changed. In another show, the male and female leads hated each other so much, one reviewer said their romantic scenes would be much more convincing if they didn't look like they were on the verge of homicide. In another play titled wrecks, just as the cast was taking a curtain call, the lead male actor slapped one of the male dancers in front of a shocked audience. The dancer had said, that's a wrap during the bows, but the lead thought he said, that was crap. In 1975, actor Yul Brynner and two other Broadway actors sued trader Vic's restaurant for $7.5 million where the three and brynner's wife had dined out before a performance. They alleged the spare ribs they consumed that night were poisonous, causing them to fall ill, weak and infirm, forcing brunner and company to miss performances. Wife said she sustained, quote, and impaired and depreciated marital association with her husband as a result of the tainted ribs. On the other hand, sometimes things can go magically right. When renowned Broadway director Hal prince needed a new song to save the second act of a 1973 musical called a little night music, composer Stephen Sondheim only had two days to come up with a new one. So sometimes shut himself away for 48 hours in a hotel room and emerged with send in the clowns. That song has since become a classic recorded by over 900 artists. And we'll be right back. "It's a nice little town. It's actually very pretty there. I had. Okay time I didn't see much to lose because I was doing this thing. But Yeah, it was 6 10 hour days, basically, and the weather wasn't that good. So it took a little bit longer and then did the check ride yesterday. And so you normally you fly from the left side. But when you're instructing, you have to fly from the right side because the student would be sitting in the seat. You know what I'm saying? So you have to learn how to do that. Which is weird because everything's different. And then you have to be able to teach everything that you do in the airplane. Because now you're Obviously instructing private pilots, commercial pilots, whatever you feel do that You have to know a lot of stuff that I have for gotten. And yes, so most people if they want to get into a career in aviation, they would go get their private and then get an instrument rating and then 250 hours and get a commercial and then go right into the instructor. And then they work to gain to build time to get enough hours to go to the airlines. So that's why most people do this when they're much younger. I, of course, waited 20 years. So the last time I learned any of this stuff was, like 18 years ago, and so that and so they tell this kid Hey, this guy's coming from Chicago. He's on the radio. He hasn't done any of this. In 18 years since I walked in. He just looks at me like I'm like his second student or third student ever, and he's just like We're completely screwed. But we weren't went out yesterday, four hours. There's a picture of my instagram of me teaching. I had to make power point presentation. I have never in my life made it. Power point I had to figure out that was the hardest part was trying to figure out how to make a power point. Honestly, I've done radio my entire career. I don't know how to make a spreadsheet or power boy never had to do it some. So I had to teach this guy and then we went flew for two hours and I had to teach the guy in the airplane and a couple times You tried to kill me to make sure that I could like, you know, is that true? They do that, like they'll turn off the whatever like the engine and you have the Figure out how to turn it back on and pull the engine. I do that as instructors. You pull the engine back toe idol. You don't turn it off, and then you simulate what it would be like if the engine goes off, you know, what am I going to do? How am I gonna do that? Or whatever, But then you you give him the controls right cause, like, okay, I just taught you this thing. So now you do it, And then he like, twist the thing in the 19. You know, I don't know what to do You know that. It's like no bill. That's Not how you do that, but they wanted they want to see you like to see that you can recognize when someone screwing up and whatever it is that book really existed when the people always using like engagements wonder like we'll get the trickling spoke of. You know what? I would never do that to somebody. Have you seen those? Those videos on social media where, like a pilot will will say. Oh my gosh. The engine just stopped and Oh, honey, pull the checklist out. The checklist is like Will you marry me at the bottom of it? I think those are so cute. You like that Make the person think they're going to die, but exhilarating about it. You know what I mean? So shut out. Torto Airplane legend Bill shot out to Parker Shout out to the haters out there, too. There was one particular hater who didn't think I Is gonna pass and I passed. And now we two same..

I feel like a great weight has been lifted from my calendar. But the year past wasn't all bad and we're going to spend the next hour, proving it with some great segments and interviews from the past year, first up. In May. We spoke to actor and singer Christine Baranski, who starred in the Mamma Mia movie. Issa's Well is the TV. Syriza's The Good Fight. The Lockdown was just a few months old then. So we asked her who she'd been stuck inside with Duck is an interesting word. I'm a blissfully with my, uh, but also stuck blissfully stuck with three little grandsons. My daughter and son in law. I think I read once that you never had a television in your home. Is that right? Yes. We took the televisions that when they were little because it became clear that the We couldn't monitor what they were watching. So we just remember taking the television out Physically, It was that small and I and I put it in the barn across the road and covered it with a blank. Wait a minute, But your TV career started in the eighties, right or so weren't mean your kids weren't even allowed to watch anyone. I am. No, they didn't watch me. I'm a gay person speaking to you, and as a young gay child. I did watch you on television in that show, and I did idolize you from a very young age for that. So I would like to say that I think you robbed your Children of something very special by not letting them watch it and that formative age because it really shaped me and a college education does not make up for them. I wanted to be there, Mom, you know, I just wanted to be Wife and mom and not larger than life. I mean, that's why wild because I also wanted you to be my mom. Um, speaking of your speaking of your country house, we There's this rumor that even got to us and we don't know anything. That your Lake House is famous for its skinny dipping. Is that true? Oh, gosh, this story will not die. It will not die. So why? Let's just revive it yet again. I've had very famous actors on my dock late at night, either. Any dipping or just be note. Amy, Meryl Streep Woz, one of the people, Unlike Doc I, you know. No. She was fully clothed when she has visited. I will say that. Wait a minute. We should just remind everybody that there was this wonderful online tribute to Stephen Sondheim last weekend, and I think we could all agree. The highlight of a really remarkable evening of performing Was you along with Meryl Streep and Audra McDonald doing a trio version of the great The ladies who lunch from company and as Amy pointed out, you all did it at home in your bathrooms. At that time sitting at the very desk where I recorded my section of the music, and I could only record it late at night, when my little grandsons Were sleeping, but it's assumed that requires some full out Belding. I was about to say, I mean, just imagine your little grandchild getting up and coming, Grandma, would you stop belting? I'm trying to sleep. This is I'm not kidding. This is what it sounded like. Let me try and do it now the reason not to move vodka. Thing. I'll drink to that. It's scripted that it's a rage. It's a primal alcoholic rage scream. That's what you have to produce. You know giving you personal stories about things, but I will say son. Heim has been involved with both one of my favorite musicals and my most hated musical, the musical I hate more than anything in the whole wide World Flint. Let's just get into it. Shall we please? Stephen Joshua Sondheim was born march twenty, second, nineteen thirty. He is still alive. He's ninety this year. Yep and we'll talk about that in a minute, but He was born into a Jewish family in new. York City the son of Janet and Herbert Sondheim. His father manufactured dresses designed by his mother. and. The composer grew up on the upper west side of Manhattan and after his parents divorced on a farm near Doylestown Pennsylvania so he was an only child of well-to-do parents, and he lived in the San. Remo on Central Park West and was described in Merrill. seacrest biography, which is called Stephen Sondheim a life. He was an isolated, emotionally neglected child. Perfect for. Perfect for musical theatre Yep he traces his interest in theater to warm for May, which was a broadway musical. He saw when he was nine quote. The curtain went up and reveal the piano. sondheim recalled a Butler to the duster and brushed it up tinkling the keys. I thought that was thrilling. He attended the New York. Military Academy and George School, which was a private quaker preparatory school in Bucks County Pennsylvania. When Sondheim was ten years old, his father already, a distant figure had left his mother for another woman. Herbert sought custody of Steven, but was unsuccessful. sondheim explained it biographer secrets that he was what they called an institutionalized child, meaning one who had no contact with any kind of family. You're in though its luxurious, you're in an environment that supplies you with everything, but human contact, no brothers and sisters, no parents, and yet plenty to eat and friends to play with and a warm bed, you know. SONDHEIM detested his mother, who is said to be psychologically abusive and projected her anger from her failed marriage onto her son. He said when my father left her. She substituted me for him and she used me the way she used him to. Come onto and berate. beat up on. You see what she did for five years is treat me like dirt, but come on to me at the same time. She wants wrote him a letter I know. She wants wrote him a letter, saying that the quote only regrets, she ever had was giving him birth.
