tops the reference librarians and what can you tell me about a water sprite or water spirits and she round there look to things up initially came up with a book and now show me a picture of an elemental being called a nightmare which is also known as the water sprite or water spirit it's a feminine elemental guardians of areas because there's some fresh water springs interesting the odd thing about that the properties that we lived on there were seven natural springs on that one property the floated one that flowed into the lake about three hundred yards away what new books you working on now Stephen Hobbs I'm working on one about Mister Rogers of the Great Smoky Mountains have been working on it land company years and put it down my brother passed away and he's all in that bookies because experience if not more so than I am in the legends and lore the Smokies and he was sort of helping me out with some stories and things on when he passed when I showed up for a while but it's it's time to get back on that's what ninety percent finished okay without the summer we'll have you back on when it's done okay great let's take some calls Cheryl is in Texas on the wildcard line sure welcome to the program thank you so much George I'm honored hi Steve hi there that's something to share with the audience it's something that you can say so it's not a ghost but I logged in eight our senior properties for seniors we're all in for collection and they didn't tell us before we moved in here that this used to be a wildlife habitat and I knew the bobcats and coyotes just a few feet from where my apartment S. that's where their damn car and so they were all around the run up on my cat gorge I survived date prior to the attack this year but I cracked my door I'm not sure I'll be here today the first thing you're going to hear is going to sound like a woman screaming and that is a lone coyote and then afterwards I could be in the packs of coyotes this is literally at my front door and so that's what I call the intellect you're listening here at here we go here we go what the world could that the Stephen well I'm not sure which is right about a big cat sometimes typically really big cats like would they have something called a panther although it's not really a painter they will make it sound good sounds very similar to a woman screaming and you talk about something like in the hairs stand up on the back of your neck the out in the middle of the wilderness somewhere in here what might be a screen I mean who knows that there are gas to do that but then it could be somebody screaming as well this could be anything we've heard big foot sounds out there in the woods and everything how about you have you heard any B. even though you've never seen one have you heard something out in the woods that could sound like a big foot yeah particularly here in Washington state just across the river from Portland not too far throw there in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest it's just in the shadow of mount St Helens I've heard some very unusual skips and the owls and it doesn't sound like any animal in the woods that I'm familiar with them I've heard some recordings of things that people report to be big foot and it sounds very similar to what I've heard and it was coming from different areas like one would call in another would answer maybe two more and they sounded described it as a different sizes like maybe one was a male adult the others a female and then there's some of the younger one somewhere and they're answering to first time caller PA in Maryville Tennessee almost year old neck of the woods Steven hi PA your job listing coast to coast since nineteen ninety seven thank you Sir for staying with us so long how do three I grew up in a cage code left thank you notes for their absolutely have left for my mom's family is off from when they immigrated over from your lan and cades cove yeah we'll see a lot of people ordenar I'm eighty two years old so I thought I was south I grew up there I could tell you you better give us one well you're not for there was no school supplies I didn't go to school two three years because they should hold us schools churches for everybody my mother helped me refine you know yeah third a lot of people were you know warm friendship Baptist church I'm sure Steve does I don't yep yeah what happened there execs were we all that's how most people are yeah soon soon sparked some ghostly thing in the cemetery out that way the sparks no but there's a zero thank you leave us with I have the search it's called the thank people used to ride horses out there is darkness this lady jumps on the back of the Ballarat found seven should rise to the got now the next three years to drop off she was a ghost yeah whoa Jerry here that one Stephen yeah I have heard that legend with the rider would feel somebody jump on the back of the whole whole whole whole whole I got to the water and that's the the the legend of the ghost can't cross moving water so should drop off but yeah cades cove in particular and the north shore of Fontana lake are the two most importantly haunted areas in the Smokies for decades ago was got all kinds of other charges would be things going on there in geographically where are exactly the smoky mountains on the border between East Tennessee and western North Carolina India is a widespread area yeah it's it's huge it's very large national park and it just happens to be the most visited national park in the U. S. S. and what makes it so unusual what do you think happened there a long time ago to make it so strange well the Cherokee are all throughout there they've got a story for everything they have a lot of stories about different battles with other tribes and they also believe in the little people there's Cherokee legend of little people in the Smokies like gnomes and fairies and elves and.

"I responding to comedian Louis C K 's not at all funny. Comments over the weekend, including that they only survived because they pushed a fat kid in the way Elena Eastman tweeted out a reference to seek as sexual misconduct since you like making fun of us behind closed doors. I'm right here. If you wanna talk just try to keep it in your pants, okay? But the survivors undoubtedly have more important things on their minds right now, the south Florida. Sun sentinel has published a devastating detailed timeline of the fifty eight minutes of chaos at Marjory stoneman Douglas high school concluding that children and teachers died because the Broward County sheriff's office and the school district failed them a warning. This is grim stuff and will post the report all the embedded security camera footage at here now dot org, as we welcome Stephen Hobbs, one of the reporters, and Stephen we knew for instance, one arm deputy Peterson didn't call in a lockdown didn't go in the school. But were you surprised at how many failures there were other deputies arriving not one running towards the shooting? We were Robin. We'd heard some talk after the shooting one about Scott Peterson. As you mentioned, this will research deputy, not immediately Russian, and we'd also heard some talk that there were some other deputies. He didn't immediately Russia, but we didn't really have an idea. That it would be a total of eight deputies including Peterson that arrived at the school and time to hear recon and did not immediately Russia now one just important piece of note Peterson really is the all new deputy who was there while people were didn't shot, but still while there was gone fire. And and deputies maybe should have been tipped off to the there was an active shooter situation at the school, those that did not immediately Russia may have had to do with a recent change in policy. The sheriff had changed the policy to deputies may go into an active shooter situation immediately versus what it previously was with the they shall go in he didn't want deputies took what he said like suicide mission immediately go in in a situation that could be an issue for officer safety, but this policy that was criticized very much and actually changed in white of what happened at. The school. Well, it's been the thinking since Columbine when police officers also stayed outside the school that immediately go towards the shooter and take the shooter out. And in fact, neighboring police came from Coral Springs, and they all immediately ran in and said that some of it was that many Coral Springs had some more information. There's a little bit of confusing thing about where the nine one one calls recalling. But they still immediately went in and even officers from other departments who are maybe off duty or from a different department came in and they were much more quick to try to go towards the building even while after the shooting, but they still knew that that people needed to be there to try to find out where the should run you, quote, one of them saying, this is what we learned in active shooting drills and people from Broward County couldn't remember the most recent drill. So that was a cautionary note there, but let's start at the beginning of this horrible afternoon and unarmed security monitor Andrew Medina a coach at the school is. Writing in a golf cart. He's unlucky gates. This is before classes dismissed he sees nNcholas crews will rival bag even has a name for him. But right there he is radio. He doesn't call in a lockdown. What does he do? You kind of watches crews go into the building any radios ahead to one of his colleagues other other called campus monitors and you kind of stops and doesn't pursue crews. Once he goes into the building because of his, you know, he said that he radioed ahead. But yes, as you mentioned, this was an opportunity Wanda call walk down or to actively pursue crews in his golf cart and try to get him very quickly, which once we don't know. But but potentially may have been away to stop the shooting before it happened the name that this Andrew Medina had for the student was crazy boy. So obviously, he knew that there was this this young man had some issues the man that he called inside his David Taylor. David Taylor inside you have the security video. He sees nNcholas. Cruise turns around and goes the other way, it's chilling to see. Yes. Now, he told investigators what he was trying to do was. Macos crews went in to the building and turned into a stairwell. He later said that he was turned around to go up the stairwell to try to head him off. But still. Yeah. Once again, we're kind of left with wondering, maybe if he would have continued we don't know what could have happened. But maybe this was another opportunity for for the shooting to have been stopped. And once he started going up the stairs to has said head off cruise. He hurts himself. Sounds and I was another opportunity to maybe call a code red. If it to him sounded like an fire, and I should splaying code red is kind of a school walk down an opportunity to to to have people stay in their classrooms because as we see that became an issue during the shoot him. Instead, Dave Taylor goes and hides in a closet. And it does become an issue because the shooting sets off the fire alarms and young people. Do what they do in a firearm. They stream into the halls instead of if what had come out over the PA was code red. They would have stayed in their classrooms. So the carnage. I mean, they're in the halls, and then you come across problems like on the first floor nNcholas cruise is just shooting through the windows of classrooms and many of the classrooms. Don't have what's called hard corners places where people can hide out of sight of the window and that had been recommended by the time he gets to the third floor and some of these students are trapped in the hall because some of the doors have locked behind the teachers who came out for the fire drill. They tried to get into the bathrooms. The bathrooms are locked because kids were vaping. And there was concerns about that. And and then you know, the words you choose chaos. That seems accurate because there doesn't seem to be going back to the responding Broward County deputies. No one's in charge. Yeah. There was a really an opportunity that was noted in our reporting and other reporting on this issue for people to take control early on. And just be able to have a better organization of the response. And there were a lot of issues that played in that chaos as well. There was a real issue with the surveillance video one of the things that happened was a couple administrators are school officials went inside the room to look at footage, and it's a little bit unclear just based on our reporting. But at some point they were relaying information to other school officials in police trying to track nNcholas crews inside the building there became a delay in what they were looking at. They were saying at points. He's moving from the second to the third floor and. So officers inside the building thought that the shooter was still in there. When in fact, he had left more than twenty minutes earlier. And so it's a little bit unclear whether or not the people in the schools Cameroon knew that the video was behind, and they're all can't old footage or if they thought it was live. But still the result. Is that cops thought it was live at some point. And they were preparing to have a kind of a shootout with the shooter in that building. Look, you have tons of sound and video in your piece. We're not gonna play it now because it's just you know, it's it'll trigger some people. It's just terrible. But we want to point out there were heroin as well. A teacher who holds a stairwell door closed against the shooter athletic director, Chris Hickson who ran toward crews and was shot and killed. But what are you hearing from Broward County about this devastating indictment? Of the not just the police response. But the school which had been told by investigators to do certain things like, you know, make hard corners in the room. So a shooter can't see students that kind of thing. What what are what are you hearing back after this? Why this shooting has really shown not just even in our county. But statewide is there's a real push to try to make sure something like this doesn't happen. Again woke away people are asking for a leadership changes to the sheriff's office and the school district, but event just more. Specifically people are asking for policy changes making sure that walked down information is more clear that the hard corners as you mentioned those kind of safe areas in classrooms are are more pronounced at that. There's better training with the poise agencies as well as the schools, but statewide there's been a real big focus. It's unfortunately, a reality that many places may have to deal with because you don't really know what could happen. So I think a lot of places in the state are looking at this for an opportunity to try to update their policies and procedures. For a potential shooting. Stephen Hobbs of the south Florida. "Confess. It happened on September eighth twenty eleven more than two years after the murders. Kevin was taken from prison in north Florida to a nearby county jail that had a live lineup room. A deputy from the jail ran. The lineup commute was read a script and like the photo lineup in Jamaica, it would be recorded on video. But reporter. Stephen Hobbs says, there were concerned with this lineup too. One. The things that's important in wine, ABS light. This is who's running it and do they know the suspect they're not. So the sheriff's deputy who was running this lineup was working at this. This jail is kind of a small county jail. And so he was aware of the other people who were with Kevin standing there during the wine, there was only about one hundred and eighty people at this county jail to choose from. So there's not a lot of people that shoes from that. Maybe we'll look really similar to Kevin just by comparison browertown either were about forty, four hundred people in jail at that time, which would have been a much larger population of people to choose from that would really similar to Kevin and how that plays out in this lineup is we see that there's a really big age difference in the people that are chosen to stand with Kevin. The six men are lined up facing the wall with their backs to Camille one by one they are told to turn to face her. Then turn left then right than back to the wall. Kevin, prod, number four. On the video, Camille is not visible as Kevin turns to face her. But the deputy running the lineup would later say that her knees buckled when she saw him the last two men face her. Then communities asked if she recognized any of them, she asks to see numbers four and five again. So they repeat the whole lineup, then they do it again. And this time they're asked to smile. Camille wants to see their teeth. She said, the man who attacked her had gold teeth on his bottom row. Kevin shows gold teeth, but he has them on the top and bottom. Six individuals orphan. Solve Mizra car, Camille pauses for a moment. Then stands up and softly says, number four, Kevin Pratt, the lineup lasted nearly twenty five minutes and was over. But the real drama of the day wasn't. The detectives had planned it for months. The first two interviews with Kevin didn't lead to a confession. So they tried an unusual tactic. The detectives had Kevin in an interview room after the lineup, and we're asking him the same questions they had asked over and over before more than forty, five minutes into the interview. The door opens and Camille Hamilton walks in. Own intrusive. This is Camille. She lived just. In their son. Remember who worse. Back was turned to the road. When you when you have. Money. Never. Don't get you. Detective. Bertrand urges Kevin to say something apologize. Camille pleads with him. For fifteen minutes. She goes on, but Kevin never says a word, Camille sorrow turns to anger. No. Camille

"This would be Kevin Pratt's best alibi for the night. Four people were shot three fatally on Encino street in Miramar, Florida in August two thousand nine. But it was seven months earlier and more than three hundred miles away. On a Thursday afternoon in late January two thousand nine, Kevin's bloodied body, lay inside a bath and kitchen store. Jacksonville, Florida won a sheriff's deputy came upon him. His shirt off exposing wound caused by a bullet that had ripped through his abdomen. Moments earlier, he was going into a nearby apartment complex to meet a girl. But when he walked in an apartment guy pulled a gun on him apparently to rob him, there was a struggle and Kevin was shot. He made it a few hundred feet south of the apartments and into the store where witnesses said he wasn't telling the much about what happened and the gunman was never found. Kevin's gunshot wound was serious and he needed emergency surgery. He survived, but he would later tell detective that the injury led to months of recovery and continue to affect him more than a year later. So when detectives told Kevin, he was their prime suspect in the triple murder that happened seven months after the shooting. Kevin said it couldn't be him. He was still recovering from the gunshot and his body was too weak to pull off such an attack. He explained. How could he possibly have killed faith business or Davey and Bishop and the, he'd Hamilton. These. I got shot and strength. I don't know kill somebody killed three people that. Do that. But the detective weren't buying it. They were convinced Kevin Pratt, was the killer. I'm your host mccade Austin along with investigative reporters, Stephen Hobbs, this is part three. The conclusion of the Sinoe murders. Less than three weeks after detectives. I learned Kevin Pratt, was a possible suspect in the Sinoe street killings. They had his photo in front of the only survivor of the attack. Camille. Hamilton was back in Jamaica when Miramar detectives, Steve, Toyota and his partner. Hector, Bertrand flew from Florida to see her on the island nearly a year had passed since a mysterious gunman shot her in the face and killed her teenage daughter to others. The detectives hadn't had a suspect until now and they were wasting no time building a case. They brought six photos with them. One was a photo of Kevin from his driver's license taken seven months before the murderers. The other photos were fillers, five different black men all with various types of facial hair. This photo lineup was important and had to be done right. Camille would be shown the photos by Jamaican contractor for the US Marshall service. He didn't know which of the photos showed the suspect so that Camille identification wasn't tainted by any of his reactions and the procedure would be videotaped. So there was a record. It takes place in a bedroom. Detective,
