"It's a 40 in London I'm Stephen Carol. Let's get a check on where markets are trading for you at this hour. The stock 600 up by two tenths of 1%, the 4100 to two tenths higher as well. The Kat caron in Paris and the Dax and frankfurter boat up just around a tenth of 1% this morning the FTSE made of Milan two ten tires. We are looking at a market day that's much quieter because of course the U.S. markets are closed for presidents day. Wall Street futures are in the red by about two tenths of 1% in the S&P E minis, but of course no trading on those markets today. Now, in general, we are looking at a fairly quiet day in terms of data as well. Tomorrow is the big day for PMIs in Europe and numbers from the UK from France from Germany for the Eurozone. We'll have out tomorrow the last week flash BMIs for the U.S. out tomorrow and we have the U.S. initial jobless claims numbers coming out on Thursday as well. So lots of Central Bank speakers will be around later in the week, too, but markets taking a bit of a breather today and what we're seeing in trading, although equity is still pointing north as they are digesting both the hawkish commentary. We got it at central bankers last week, and hopes over the Chinese rebound from, as it reopens from COVID zero, interesting to see oil prices this morning moving higher, Brent crude, 8 or 9 to 1% higher now, $83 and 75 cents is where that's trading this morning. The Bloomberg dollar spot index is flat. We are watching European natural gas prices as well. They'd fallen below €50 a megawatt hour in the Dutch GTF exchange. Last week, that was the lowest point in 17 months. So just above that €50 mark this morning, but it is an interesting one to keep an eye on in the context of the conversations we're having about the approaching that first anniversary of the war in Ukraine. Elsewhere in the currency markets, the Euro now in the radicals the dollars in our back below one O 7, so one O 6 87 is where that's trading against the dollar. Also a touch weaker on Sterling two on cable that's trading at one 20, 27 as well, not much moving to their own European barns, ten year basis point higher this morning, 2.45%, the ten year gilt yield is a basis point lower. Nearly two basis points lower now trading at 3.49%. That is your Bloomberg radio business flash. Now let's get a global news briefing from Leanne garran's. Stephen, good morning, North Korea has fired two suspected ballistic missiles while issuing a warning to the U.S. over joint military exercises. It comes less than two days after Pyongyang launched a long-range missile capable of hitting the American mainland the weekend saw the U.S. and the allies South Korea and Japan hold aerial drills in a show of force amid continuing tensions in the region. Now senior diplomats say atomic inspectors in Iran have detected uranium enriched to levels just below that needed for a nuclear weapon. It's the second time this month, that monitors say they have detected a suspicious activity. It's not yet clear whether Iran intentionally did produce the material. And Qatari group has hired Bank of America as one of the advisers for its bid to buy Manchester United, the effort is being led by the royal family member Sheik jassim Al thani, who is also chairman of Qatar Islamic bank. The group's opening offer could value man united at $6 billion, the qataris are set to face competition from the British billionaire Jim Radcliffe who's lined up financing from banks including Goldman Sachs. "This is Bloomberg daybreak Europe. I think what you're going to see in the UK is you're going to see the Central Bank having to respond to really bad data. Tax cuts should not be the priority at the moment. It's about a credible plan for growth over the next two, three years. I think we have started to turn a corner. That's encouraging. There's a long way to go and there are a lot of risks. We know that we have ground to cover. We know that we are not done. Bloomberg daybreak, Europe, on Bloomberg radio. And at 7 30 a.m. here in London good morning, I'm Caroline heppel. And I'm Stephen Carol, this is Bloomberg daybreak, Europe. We checked the markets for you all day long at Bloomberg gear stocks 50 futures, half a percent lower, 4100 features, three tant to 1% lower as we look towards the start of the European trading session Wall Street futures also in the red S&P E minis down by a tenth of 1%. The Japanese yen now just four tenths of 1% stronger after that report, if you've had from the Nike about the potential name for the new governor of the bank of Japan, the announcement formally due to take place next week, the Bloomberg dollar spot index is a touch weaker. The pound is two tenths of 1% weaker against the dollar one 2095 is where it's trading. And now to our top stories, the UK avoided a recession by the narrowest of margins last year, GDP was on changed in the final three months of 2022 following a revised two tenths of 1% decline in the previous three months. However, the cost of living crisis and industrial action hit the economy hard in December without put declining by half a percent in the final month of the year. Professor Stephen Miller deputy director at the National Institute of economic and social research says that 2023 will be a tough year for many. And the key points I think I'd like to make is that although we're not forecasting a recession as such, life is certainly not going to be great for a large number of households. We're not expecting the economy to grow that much at all. Professor Stephen millard also told us that one in four UK households will be unable to pay their energy and food bills in 2023. The Bank of England governor Andrew Bailey says big increases in public sector pay will add to inflation if they aren't offset by tax increases. Speaking to the treasury select committee in parliament, Bailey said that even with falling energy costs inflationary risks remain. There are really sort of two countervailing forces going on at the moment. There are very powerful base effects that are going to come out that effectively come out this year. And that puts a very powerful negative trajectory on inflation. And that's really down to a lot of that is down to energy prices. Now, we all concerned about persistence. And that's why we frankly raised interest rates this time. The Bank of England governor was speaking as firefighters called off the threat of strikes after receiving an improved pay offer, the fire brigade's union said its members would vote on a 7% raise back data to last summer and a further 5% increase from this July. Now Trafigura is facing a $577 million loss after discovering metal cargoes it bought did not contain the nickel that they were supposed to. Bloomberg zucchini broke down the story for us. Trafalgar is a company that has grown rapidly in the past decade to become one of the world's largest trading houses and it spent the last two months uncovering what it now believes to be systemic fraud against it. And people close to the matter say the group's head of nickel and cobalt trading is actually leaving the company, although the firm has said in a statement it does not believe anyone at the company was complicit in the fraud. Sukin reporting that the revelations are another black mark for the metals trading industry which is recent years has been beset by tales of fake warehouse receipts, duplicate shipping documents and even containers filled with painted rocks. China's consumer price inflation accelerated last month as the lunar new year holiday stimulated demand, CPI rose in line with inflation hitting 2.1% year on year. Bloomberg economic says the pickup in CPI was down to higher food prices, core inflation which strips out food and energy costs gained just 1%. Okay, those are a few of our top stories for you still had on blue bag daybreak here. We're going to talk about the global outlook with Friday duke rose, who is head of macroeconomic research at picte, wealth management, a very difficult year ahead for the UK expected not quite so bad elsewhere, but that yields curve inversion is a difficult signal for the U.S.

"This is Bloomberg daybreak Europe we judge that interest rates we still have to rise significantly at a steady pace. We expect inflation to start falling more rapidly, probably from the late spring onwards. There is a risk that it won't happen in that way. Things aren't working properly in the UK. The question for the government isn't only. How do you resolve these disputes? How do you get Britain? What can properly again? Bloomberg daybreak Europe on Bloomberg radio. And at 7 30 a.m. here in London, I'm Caroline Hepburn. And I'm Stephen Carol, this is Bloomberg daybreak Europe. We check the markets every 15 minutes for you on Bloomberg radio, looking at Euro stocks 50 futures 7 tenths of 1% tires were half an hour away from the start of the cash equities trading session, S&P mini futures a half a percent higher on Wall Street as well. We had some follows in the Asian session the Nike in Tokyo down 7 tenths of 1% of course we're watching the Japanese yen very closely holding on to the gains from yesterday after that bank of Japan decision to adjust the yield curve control the an spot index two ten to 1% week or a 132 against the dollar is where that's trading, the ten year yield close to the new upper limit of half a percent 0.47% is where it's trading up 7 basis points. The two year yield back in negative territory after a brief foray into positive earlier it's now down by 0.02%. Okay, those are the markets. These are our top stories, the crisis in the UK's health service is deepening as 25,000 paramedics and ambulance crews go on strike for the first time in 30 years, NHS bosses are warning that they can't guarantee the safety of patients and ministers are warning people to avoid risky activities, prime minister Vichy sunak says his priority is bringing down inflation. The erstwhile head of the FTX cryptocurrency exchange. The spectacular flame out of his virtual empire has become a masterclass on everything that's wrong with crypto markets. Several lessons stand out that crypto denominated assets warrants skepticism, for example, that market capitalization isn't the same as value, and that accounting and consumer protections really do matter. Whatever the potential benefits of crypto, the surrounding speculative friendly has little to do with them. On the contrary, it is mostly served to separate people from their money as FTX has shown. Lawmakers and regulators should act to keep crypto from threatening to broader financial system. And in the meantime, the message for investors and traditional finance remains simple. Stay away. This editorial was written by the Bloomberg editorial board, Britain's new prime minister Rishi sunak is widely seen as pragmatic and competent. Virtues lately all but absent from British politics. Investors have greeted his rise with relief, but that might not last long. Sunac inherits a party deeply split over Brexit, especially but also immigration, taxes, regional inequality, and other contentious matters. Meanwhile, the UK has been especially hard hit by the soaring cost of gas, making its inflation among the highest in Europe. Sunac's pledged to restore responsibility may calm markets but standing by that commitment as the Central Bank raises interest rates makes a serious recession possible. Its Europe's largest nuclear reactor complex, and it sits right on the front line between the Ukrainian defenders and Russian invaders. The IAEA's goal is to avert a radiation disaster. Putin will never agree to unilaterally withdraw his troops and yield the plant to the Ukrainians, which would amount to retreat. "This is Bloomberg daybreak Europe We may be out of the EU and Brexit may be done but we still have to deal with our biggest market which is the European Union Why does the prime minister think everybody else's actions have consequences Except his own We've got more inflation to fight this time The Ukrainians have shown the courage of a lion but you volodymyr have given the raw Bloomberg daybreak Europe on Bloomberg radio Anna van good morning from hunter and I'm Caroline had And I'm Stephen Carol you're listening to daybreak Europe live on London DAB digital radio Right so we're going to unpack these China inflation figures with Bloomberg's end of current very shortly also the gas bat between Russia and Ukraine very important for markets our own and Mark champion will be here in the studio to discuss We also getting quite a lot of comments out this morning Stephen From a whole host of ECB speakers there's a whole lineup Christina guard included Val sentinel Muller all speaking on a panel this morning class not and Isabel schnabel so pretty much the whole list But de Gallo has been speaking talking about the ECB having a duty a will and a capacity to fight inflation that from villa de Gallo And of course we're looking ahead to U.S. inflation figures direct later today as well One 30 p.m. UK time we're expecting or to have passed the peak and see that CPI come down from the peak that we had in March Of course that will be a big issue for the markets watching going forward as well Yeah let's go to the markets then before we get to those big conversations European natural gas prices then starting trading at art by 6.8% so there you see the immediate read across into the markets of the concern around disruptions of Russian gas flows via Ukraine due to the war also in terms of markets then We have seen a big rally in Asia the hang saying index up by 1.6% this morning CSI 300 by 2.2% This as we saw the CPI numbers out of China were reflecting a sharply higher CPI and PPI figures for China Also other things to think about pretty big dollars spot index weaker a tenth of 1% the pound rallying two tenths of 1% Brent crude up by 2.2% a $104 74 the bow Bitcoin reviving a little 31,433 sought by 1.1% U.S. yields are fairly steady then in terms of the countdown to that U.S. CPI figure two 98 on the ten year so we're still below 3% actually this morning but U.S. and European stock futures are positive so U.S. stocks 50 futures gaining 6 tenths of 1% That is the data in the markets right now Well let's get more on the markets than markets live editor lorcan wrote Kelly good morning to you lorcan so we're looking at volatility continuing to ease down on the markets Good morning I think the markets right now are somewhat driven by any good news that you can find at reducing cases in China is something that we've kind of jumped out to this morning If you look at where the business is David last night from the Chinese regular state that fed policy which is what is next to the bear market will not affect the PBOC policy to recreate the economy after the COVID era has passed But I think it's kind of interesting that that does fall number of COVID cases in China is basically the strength of the market at the moment because it is very much a policy that China's broader itself And it's got a feed in the cost of the world So we see with oil even has risen as well but it's morning because Chinese demand might be coming back So it has ripple effects everywhere Okay So that in terms of the volatility of the last couple of days what about oil and natural gas prices as I mentioned the jump now that we're starting to see in that gas prices and oil has had a very difficult couple of days too Yes I think the oil price is kind of being in the range in 95 and a $115 for the boat This is just after the Russian base and the view plane But I think it's due for the oil price that was recently worth watching later on today You mentioned U.S. inflation earlier Is the oil prices kind of stable for the last month and a half but the price that consumers are paying for gasoline and these are the U.S. has hit a record high yesterday again So I think maybe we shouldn't take too much comfort in other price kind of certainly in a $100 because what the consumers in the U.S. are paying is much higher and it's hit record and because of this record to use the patient data may you come into the smallest surprise today to a little bit harder to expect this Okay lurkin wrote Kelly thank you very much for real-time market commentary and analysis You can check out the work of Loren and his colleagues at markets live It's ML IV on your Bloomberg terminal Let's get to today's top stories now He's been.

"This is Bloomberg daybreak Europe We make the out of DU and Brexit may be done but we still have to deal with our biggest market which is the European Union Why does the prime minister think everybody else's actions have consequences Except his own We've got more inflation to fight this time for Ukrainians have shown the courage of a lion that you belong in the air have given the raw Bloomberg daybreak Europe on Bloomberg radio Hannah good morning from London I'm Caroline Hepburn And I'm Stephen Carol you're listening to daybreak Europe live on London DAB digital radio So in terms of natural gas here in Europe there's a clash between Russia and Ukraine now So expecting that gas to fall in terms of flows via Ukraine by some 18% today So that could set up a big spat and be quite worry in terms of markets but also of course we're still thinking about the queen's speech delivered by Prince Charles yesterday Yeah and essentially the surprise that there wasn't more money announced for Britain's struggling with the cost of living this coming as a leading think tank here in the UK has warned the number of people living in Britain living in destitution could rise to 1 million over the next year will be coming through the details of the policy announcements in that speech with Bloomberg's UK economy reporter Lizzie Burton And also we'll unpack the China inflation data from this morning Bloomberg's NASA in Syria will be joining us live from Hong Kong in a moment But I have to say Stephen the standout speech for me was yesterday Janet Yellen the US Treasury secretary making the case for access to abortion for women and its benefits to women's lives freedoms economic empowerment she was very very strong on that point She certainly was economic research she said suggesting that a move would increase poverty levels for women and heart the future earnings of children as well Yeah absolutely Right Let's go to the markets then And give you an update there So actually most Asian stocks are up this morning The MCI age Pacific index gaining by two tenths of 1% this morning the Hanks hang also seeing a 1.7% gain So the fact that COVID cases in China are declining has sparked this rally at Shanghai reported zero new virus cases in the community So that's why we've seen gains for the seaside 300 for example up by 2.3% but the story is pretty complex So we'll delve into that U.S. and European stock futures are pushing higher after two days of volatility treasuries at the moment are steady ahead of the U.S. inflation print which is hugely important expected to see CPI moderate but still above 8% Germany and Portugal also issue inflation figures later As for the Bloomberg dollar spot index we are softer by a tenth of 1% this morning Oil prices gaining 2% now for breakthrough features $104 57 the bow Bitcoin again which has been very volatile for a couple of days trades at 31,151 up by half of 1% So that is the data from the markets this morning Well let's talk more about the markets now and bring in Bloomberg's Garfield rhinos from our markets live team Garfield good morning Stark's rebounding in China then but huge market volumes over the past two days Yeah I mean today very much feels like a somewhat uneasy calm before the potential storm when U.S. CPI comes out In the U.S. morning there's been this sort of stealth building of expectations that this is going to show at least some signs that inflation might be topping out and that indeed the only 50 basis points of meeting rhetoric that's been coming from some fed members will be backed by the data So that sets up some potential for a stronger rebound if we do get something that speaks to that narrative It also increases the dangers if we get yet another upside surprise on inflation We had an upside surprise on China in place today but that didn't really have much of an impact on markets A U.S. CPI surprise would Okay What about what is going on in NG and oil prices in particular Garfield Because we have still no EU deal in terms of the oil embargo against Russia but then this natural gas bat Yeah the typically the aircraft is that it only takes one side to pull the plug on the oil and natural gas on energy as it were to create some discomfort So there was some relief yesterday when day before yesterday rather when president Putin didn't announce anything controversial didn't make any signals that things might get worse when it came to the conflict with the west However this now with Ukraine and potential for the impact on gas supplies That reminds everybody that energy security is a major issue for Europe and beyond as long as we've got this war in Ukraine going on So that recent decline in oil because of the embargo being you have difficulty bringing the embargo in That is not the sort of price under a $100 a barrel for brand that I think you can rely on going forward Okay Garfield Reynolds from a market's live team Thank you very much for that And for real-time market commentary and analysis check out markets live on your terminal that's ML ivy Right let's get over to Bloomberg's Leon guerin who has.

"You're listening This Stephen Carol on WTMJ. I'm feeling better already. You should I need a relation with so many Wordsworth saying wrong or incorrectly, or fashioning our own words out of him. Yeah, I think some of this is just some of it, I think is generational. Some of it I think is regional. Um, generational, I think is a big one, right? Because, like I say dinner, but my dad would have called and said I'm I'm gonna come home for supper. Yeah, yeah, that one. We've always called a dinner at our house. But I have friends. Same area, same age called supper. Yeah, I mean, How do you I don't know. It's how you brought up Mike on the road. Hey, Mike. Hi, Mike. I'm good. How you doing? Carol? How you doing, Steve? Wonderful on this. Thank you. Loser Monday. I hope you're smiling. By mousey way are we Are we appreciate you guys helping making me smile so that that's a big part of it. What's your word, and I never once once and I added to the end of senses that I never knew I did. My wife is from the East Coast, and she called me out on it The first time I didn't know what she was talking about. So give me an example. Backyard one. Oh, yeah, Yeah. Yeah. Or come here. Watch what? I'm gonna go take a shower once. Why? Why did you start saying that? I have no idea, but I don't other people. I'd do it too. Yeah. Yeah, I guess you don't notice it was there at the end of the set. That's a big one. You know what else? Here's another one for you, Mike. I'll let you go because you're on the road. Young, younger people. Yeah, Every every thing they say, ends with rights question, Mark. Right question, Mark. Whatever it is, it's not a question. You know, until I know and to address it, like, come here once. It's not come here. I didn't think about that one. But he's right. Some people do that. Come here Once I wonder what the origin of that is, there's got to be. Some came from somewhere. It doesn't just have. It's called Lazy. Steve. Just don't want to pronounce the whole word Dave from Grafton. Hey, Dave. Hello. Hi. I have two number. I have two numbers 20 instead of 20. And ah 100 instead of 100, that second one. Yeah, right. Right. We get lazy. We get lazy with our pronunciation. Yeah, that's part of the problem. It's easy to say. Say it. 20 instead of 20 where you are. English teacher, Dave. No, no. Okay. No, but I mean, he's not wrong. He's not wrong. So 20, right and 100, right, Dave? Correct. Alright, Highway 101 of one, Dave over there You go to pronunciations, right? We're talking about my guanaco before here's sue from a guanaco. Hi suit. Hi. I have two of them. One of them is if you break something instead by accident or on accident. I broke something by Oh, okay, See, Now you make me start to use stuff and I start to question myself. I would say on accident I broke something on accidents that wrong is there. I disagree. I've always been raised by accident. They broke it by accident. Not on accident, So I expect that one is in My second one is when people say the year it's not 2000 and 21. It's 2021..

"Winding down the Monday edition Stephen Carol Kane on this As I said Monday, a little redundant there. All right. So Powerball. Yeah. It's Wednesday night. Is the drawing. Right? I think is tomorrow night, Magda Millions. Oh, that's a newer one, right? But that's huge, too. Yeah, that's up over 700. Somebody asked me. What's the odds of winning both? It's like Hey, something quadrillion Which this means? Never right? Yeah, you're not gonna that's not gonna happen. So I asked the question. I think like 750 million something like that on that's like five. I saw 5 36 million after tax so half a billion dollars was awarded. Let's say You're lucky enough to win single winner. Yeah. Right, she car broad Bonanno 400 million for yourself. You got 100 million toe play with You know what? I don't even know if I take four. I mean, obviously, your family has set for families of generations and generations and generations. Obviously, I think I would probably doom or I've always said that I would give to my family. Um, I think right now, at this particular juncture I would want to give to places and charities that are helping. Like small business owners and things like that. That's what I would do. And I might care about more than 100 million. Maybe 200 million. That's still lives. I'm gonna be fine. What would you do? Oh, that's a good question, so I would. I would probably go half half, right. Okay. So you got Let's see 250. That's all. You need, particular kids, their kids their kids After that, I mean, sure you could waste the money, I suppose. Um And you You're probably not. Probably you build yourself a beautiful house, get by a few nice cars. Maybe a vacation home somewhere. Yeah, I probably do the car thing but the home I don't need any bigger than what I got, right? I like my house knows why probably trick it out a little bit. Maybe add a second story put a basketball court. There's something like that again. That zah few million dollars. So one of the things I thought about was you take the 2 50 obviously investing. That's what continues to grow, so you know Trust or something that continues to earn forever And you dedicated to certain things. Certainly my alma mater, U W M something for those guys. Right? Maybe my high school Oh Creek High School. I think my high school my alma mater would be UW Whitewater. I think I'd like to carve out a little bit of money and give it to some of you know me with animals and some of humane organizations that I've been able to Oh, no. Are, you know adopt animals from better question. Who wouldn't you give it? Well, waste our money Well, and politics don't don't donate to politicians. I will tell you this that if I do win, let's just say, for example, I'm lucky enough on Wednesday. See you later. Steve. You're not gonna be here next Monday and that if I win, $750 million will be here. I probably would be. But I have to think you know what the problem is, is that they make you come forward. It's not like you could hire somebody right away is that every year you have a year and hopefully things will cool down. And you wouldn't because I know that you could be a target for all kinds of people asking for all kinds of money, And I don't want that. Here's the thing about that. I heard I've heard this argument. Well, people gonna bother you. You don't have to answer their calls. You don't have to answer their letters. And you can ignore them completely. I remember years ago, though, talking to they were one of the big lottery winners. I think his name was Leslie and they went up in the Fox Valley area and I met him and I asked him about it. And it was only like 50 million or something like that. Listen to me. Um, and he's but he said that he goes. It's non stop. It's non change Your full number. Well, okay. Don't get mad at me. I'm just trying to get that You've got $50 million. Change your phone number or just get rid of it all together. Don't have a phone. You don't eat while you're not going anywhere. I really think that I would go away some place for a little while. I was what I would do, I would do the Internet or the world Cruise. Like nine months long. I would do that once we got back out of the Klonopin, and once we get out of the pandemic, I would definitely be traveling. There's no doubt about it. I might even buy a seat on that space shuttle and head up into space and go around the Ark. See the earth from way up there. I said this last week about this because it was 500 some million. I said I would still do the show. And then everyone, so I'd give out like money for some somebody would pitch me on clever ideas. I say. All right, here's a million for you. Okay. I like Clooney did with 13 of his friends each give each of them a million bucks. I wish I was George Clooney's friends. Really two. How about that? How about that? That would be nice, wouldn't it? I said, curious. And I was, I guess their his lifelong friends, buddies from high school and stuff, I would I want to share it with everybody. That's in my life because of the fact that I've been so fortunate to have one stuff like that. Fortunate or not. I've seen the shows The lottery ruined my life. But that's only time you hear about these people, right? I don't care about at least 100 grand for Jordan. He's in day 100 grand shutters of you A 500 Million. So I said more. I thought that was generous. He's knuckleheads. The blow it all right. We will wrap it. Hand it off to Scott Waris was filling in for Jeff Wagner. That's coming up next right here, Wtmj.
