"Hey friends. Welcome to girls night. I'm stephanie wilson. And i am so happy that you're here each week. I have a girlfriend over and we talked to one the biggest questions. We have a better life women. We're talking about friendships and faith and relationships and self confidence about her calling in life and how to live every bit of our lives to the absolute full life so much better and easier an absolutely more fun when now to get it together as girlfriends and i cannot wait to get started today. I'm sharing one of my favorite episodes. We have ever done on the show. It's a conversation with my dear friend. Hennessy more now. If you couldn't tell we like hannah a lot around the girls community because we had her on the show about ness zillion times but she's just great for those of you guys who might be new to this show. Hannah is an amazing writer. Bible teacher and she's the host of an incredible podcast called no matter what with hennessy more. She's also one of my closest friends. I love the conversation. We have in store for you today so just a little bit of background on this episode before we dive in several months ago. I gotta read it from one of our listeners. That totally stopped me in my tracks. I'm gonna read it to you. She said hey stephanie. I've been listening the girls night for a while. Now and hearing you and your gusts talk a lot about god and having a relationship with him. I'm not a christian play. Think i might want to be one. I think i might want to have a relationship with god. But i'm not really sure what that means or way to start. Can you help me now. I loved her question. Because i remember exactly where i was when i was asking very seen thing also zones writing her back. I realized that there aren't really very many resources to help with this specific moment. Faith if you go to church or read a book about christianity or listen to a christian podcast. You're usually walking in the middle the story. It's sort of assume that you've started a journey. Are the you have some background. Information about god and jesus in front of us. That's just not true. When i became a christian. I didn't know anything about god or jesus. I've been to few times. But i didn't remember anything from it. I really was starting from square one. She'll get to hear more about that today. So in this episode. You're going to hear me. Ask hannah all the questions. I was asking at the very beginning of my faith journey questions. Like what does it mean to have a relationship with. God how do we actually beginner. Relationship with god kind of life teen. Should we expect to see in becoming a christian and what if we become a christian but our lives don't really chains. What do we do that. How do we put our full hope. And trust in god even physically see him. And that's just the beginning if you're new to your faith or if you're like i'm not a christian but i have some questions. This episode is for you but also if you've been a christian for a while or even for your whole life episode is for you -til i think so many of us come to a place where our faith to spills a little bit stale. We've been doing this forever. So in some ways it's become routine for others of us who've been a christian for a long time but we've never really had a big transformation moment with god your other people talk about. How much does changed their lives. And while we would love to experience god in such tangible life changing way. That just hasn't been our story if you're an either of those places. I know this episode will really help guys have to be honest with you. This is my favorite episode of faith. That we've ever done here on the show and i can't wait to dive in but before we do. Do you guys know that shop idea. It's filled with all of my books and journals individuals and yearbook singles shirts and art princeton. More if you're ever looking for any of the resources i talk about here on the show or if you want to be twins with me and get an official girls night sweatshirt. that is so cozy. You've practically live it. That's where you can get all those things to check out my shop. Just go to my website. It's definitely may wilson dot com and actually speaking of both my website in my shop. I.

How's it going doing absolutely fabulous brennan appreciate making time for the shell Get your picture up here. So we can go. Split-screen brent. You're looking like the most dapper gentlemen probably at an awards here on this picture. Where was this taken. That was actually a pleasant hill. This weekend really. Yep all right. So a very current shot of the pitmasters slabs of approval. Brent probably fifty different places that we could start here tonight. And i appreciate make time for the show First of all a competition barbecue is obviously something that you have been around. Probably not even by choice for any number of years. I mean stephanie. Wilson steve fair and a kyle of all means some of the top people in the industry. you know or are related to How does your twenty years old. So i mean it's not like you're forty five or fifty year old just getting into this so i mean you're relatively younger in life. What's it like growing up around barbecue in a barbecue stayed in a barbecue city and around the competition. I mean it's not any different from being you know just a regular kid. I mean you know some kids have now. They grew up playing football for you know middle school high school and i grew up. You know doing barbecue you know. I had the choice of doing football in high school. In said you know. Can i get weekends off. And you know games are on weekends. So i said no. I'm i'm a barbeque man. You know is it just because you were around it and it's kind of like second nature or is it something. Look because i look at you and obviously you know your mom's kind of involved in invested within a very successful team And then i look at other people like You know jack's newsouth you kind of had this. He's twenty years old too. So you have a group of like newer pitmasters popping up around different parts of the country. Who have been involved in competition barbecue whether they kind of have wanted to or not so. I wonder you know as you're looking. Is it just something natural because it was something you grew up with. Did you have a point where you were going to be able to diverge. And just say you know what i i would rather do football or baseball or not. Any of around played nintendo all day long. Yeah it's just it's pretty much naturally now During the sells five. You know the kids cues from five to fifteen and you know once you get your first ribbon. You know the age of five or six i. It's been a long. i don't even remember. It's just you know it's the thrill and you know meeting all all my friends that i've met throughout the whole you know barbecue travels in. It's just you know. I mean yeah you get close to a certain number of people. Doing you know football and stuff but look at all the people that are doing. You know competitions. You know around the united states and all the people you can meet and it's just you know it's it's it's a thrill it's arash pretty much. Renton richardson joining us here. On the show pitmasters slabs of approval. Where did the name come from slabs approval. I was hoping you'd ask. Actually slabs approval consist of four people. me my cookie partner austin hall loren coleman and my aunt Valerie wilson Pretty much right. Now it's just me austin val Mourns actually going to the institute of america new york and you know. She's going to college doing her thing. And pretty much austin and lauren. We're actually with the team squeal of approval which is know betsy analysis. And all that and we You know the squeal of approval slabs dot com and we just pretty much slabs of approval. And it's just been like that ever since two thousand six aren't so you've been competing since two thousand and six but you obviously you've mentioned been doing it a lot earlier What easy to cook for you. I mean is it something that because you've been around it there the learning curve or you kind of have built in prose. I guess in the family to kind of help rant that learning curve up as compared to some of the other folks that are out there. I really don't have a pro. I don't have. I don't have you know it. It all depends on the weekend. And what i like. But if i had to pick one thing it would definitely be chicken wings. That is the number one thing. I know how to cook. Now are are you. You're also just doing the regular for me. Categories events to now right. Yeah definitely all right so you know when you're going to a competition. Are you able to go out and pick your own competitions that you wanna do now. Are you typically traveling. You know where slabs is going to be competing as well. I picked pretty much wherever. I wanna go most of the time. It's going to be where the slabs go. Because i don't have the money to go to certain areas psalm. Sticking around saint joseph. You know some in kansas city missouri. And i'm i'm in the sam's club in the lenexa and if i go further than that then i'm definitely going to be traveling to saint louis and hopefully onto. Uh oh.

I gotta be coming up on the best moments the barbecue central show in ten minutes or less this friday. It's not polite to eat on mike. That's not polite. it's not funny. It's not fun episode. One hundred seventy one taking you back to april third twenty twelve. At that time. I had a twenty year old pit master of slabs of approval named brent. Richardson remember brent be rent. We talked about his background and what it was like for him. Growing up in the competition arena. I don't know how far you guys and gals go back or are fans of the show but brands mom. Stephanie wilson one of the pitmasters of the slabs a conic ionic barbecue competition cooking team a coalpit mastered by the barbecue pimp himself i had it says name the barbecue pimp himself I wanna say kevin. Kyle love all look at me coming out of the woodwork. Knew i was going to get there so in the annals of competition barbecue and one of the most successful competition teams really successful on the rub side. Everybody loves slabs rubs so that was a violent that he grew up in. We also talked about how at that time. Being twenty eight years nine years go by good nine years ago. He's almost thirty holy crap. I just did the math in my head quickly. He's twenty nine years old. Wow i got him. Probably just a twenty. And he's getting ready to just turn thirty. Oh my goodness anyway. We talked about what it was like Then when he was younger being one of those younger cookers looking to carry on the competition barbecue torch into the future. You can email john with your request if you would like j. o. N. at the bbq because show dot com mature will give you a shout out in the open to email from a listener named yet see. I'm not kidding. Yet i greg. I finally had time to send a long email. Thanks to my workmate sharing cove with me. That's not first of all regarding the best moments of twenty twenty in my opinion. We're going back a little bit here. In my opinion many of them were in fact elevated to the level of best moments. Because of how you react for example if during the pineapple fiasco twenty twenty. You just moved on without reacting to meet head saying that pineapple was the best thing ever to come off a grill. It wouldn't be much of a soundbite. However your emotional pushback framed it into what it became. I just thought credit should be given. Where do i also enjoyed the twenty twenty year in review show because i was able to hear a quick summary of the twenty to twenty five percent of the episodes that i didn't get around to listen and listen to one hundred percent of the episodes the afc. I will remain undefined. Here's a topic idea. Might be an interesting interview. Now that you've covered the badge. Jews to check out an interview with a good jew and perhaps shared with sam the cooking guy.

More than a dozen states went to court to block a change in the supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or snap, which the U. S. Department of Agriculture announced late last year. That change forced states to enforce a rule that requires most snap recipients to work or participate in work training for 20 hours a week unless they're elderly, disabled or supporting dependence. The change has not yet gone into effect. Congress stopped the USDA from implement to get during the Corona virus emergency and now a federal judge, in a strongly worded decision has struck it down, permanently, calling it arbitrary and capricious. Dan Charles. NPR news Stocks closed lower to start the trading week. The Dow down 410 points. The NASDAQ fell 192 points. This is NPR and this is K. C. R. W on Larry Perella on a Monday, October 19th 19th a very good evening to you. Here is what's happening at 704. Do you remember back in March when long lines of customers Snaked around gun stores. Researchers now U. C. Davis have tried to put an exact number on just how many Californians have bought a firearm as a result of the pandemic. Assistant professor in the Cole Kravitz works with the school's violence prevention research program led the study. 110,000, California current firearm owner said that they had purchased a firearm in response direct response to the pandemic, and that included roughly 47,000 new owners who A little past experience or training with firearms. Most respondents bought guns out of a perceived need for self protection. In response to recent messaging fromthe White House third claimed worry about lawlessness and close to the half sided worries about prisoner releases or the government going too far. She says. There are really public health risk that will extend far beyond the pandemic, Poverty, unemployment and, ah lack of resource is all coral correlated with increases in violence and worsened by the pandemic. Previous gun owners also cited adopting less safe storage practices, like keeping a gun loaded and not locked up in response to the pandemic. Hundreds of household in the city of Compton will begin receiving cash assistance before the end of the year as part of a growing experiment in universal basic income. That's the idea where the government gives people a set amount of money each month. No strings attached. KCR W's Anna Scott has more on how it will work in Compton. The plan is for 800 people to receive cash for two years as researchers track their spending and wellbeing. Participants will be chosen randomly from a pre screened pool of low income city residents. Ah, lot of details haven't been announced yet, like how much each household will receive or how often But city officials say it will be at least a few $100 a month and vary depending on need. Compton follows in the footsteps of Stockton, which recently ran a pilot that gave $500 a month to 125 people for 18 months. In June Compton Mayor Asia Brown joined Stockton Mayor Michael Tubbs as a founding member of a consortium called Mayor's for a guaranteed income, which is working on launching more pilot programs. That group also includes L. A Mayor Garcetti, but no initiative has been introduced in L A just yet. Munity activists in L. A are marching from mariachi plaza to the federal building. Today they are angry that a bankruptcy court decided to allow Excite to abandon a battery recycling plant in Vernon without cleaning of pollutants like lead and arsenic. The ruling says the lead in the soil is not causing imminent harm. David Pettit is a lawyer for the natural resources defense counsel and a member of a community advisory group. A little by little it gets into a child system or a pregnant woman, and that can cause tremendous neurological damage to me that qualifies legally as something that is imminent because the harm is occurring right now, right now, today Thousands of predominantly Latino homes have been contaminated, and now the cleanup responsibility falls on Vernon and its surrounding communities with no budget to do it. State officials have said they're angry about the court's decision. But Pettitte says the state is partially to blame. They ought to be outraged by the opinion, but they also need to look in the mirror. It's a state of Dana's job. A lot of the lead pollution that we see in Canady wouldn't be there. California's Department of Toxic Substances Control oversees, inspect and licenses facilities. It's also their responsibility to make facilities guarantee that they have financial resources to clean up their waste once they do shut down. And a bit of good news for foodies in L. A. The iconic restaurant Swingers is coming back. The iconic diner on Beverly Boulevard was known for its late night Eats and cozy diner feel it closed early on in the pandemic after being in business for nearly three decades, But eater Ella reports, the former general manager, Stephanie Wilson, has stepped up to reopen the establishment. She's been collecting funds from regulars and her own family and friends in order.

"From the BBC world service with me Judy market with me throughout the program Stephanie Wilson U. K. and Ireland correspondent for the German newspapers developed and developed am Sonntag and Jeff Kaufmann journalist commentator lecturer and the founder of the automated transcription service trench more from them in a moment we begin though in London for the second time in the run up to a British general election there's been a terror attack in the capital once again on London Bridge two people have been killed and a number injured video footage showed the suspect being wrestled to the ground by passes by a knife being taken from him followed by armed police officers pulling members of the public clear and then firing two shots but the man on the pavement it since emerged that the attack and named by police is twenty eight year old was when Khan had been convicted of a terra finds some was out of prison on license at the time it's been reported that his release from prison last year came after he agreed to wear an electronic tag and have these movements monitor it would only I spoke to our correspondent Simon Jones who's new to the scene of the attack on London Bridge will overnight the police investigation has continued up pace I'm standing at one of the many court and surrounding London race as a police officer standing hand and a loss Paul of this area of London is going to remain cordoned off for much of the day and for the foreseeable future as the police carry out their investigations I'm with being told that it's going to be an increase in the police presence on the streets both in London and across the country to act as reassurance for people who obviously very concerned about what happened it does appear doesn't it that some members of the public were remarkably bold and courageous during this attack yeah we're talking here about some current events for the Wall mmhm thing that has emerged from this is the heroism of the members of the public who confronted the attack now we understand that the attacker who's been named by police as was one call and was actually attending a conference organized by the university of Cambridge in there to London Bridge it it was designed to talk about rehabilitation of offenders now he of course was a convicted terrorists now he attended that event but some time into it he started attacking people that now one of the people at the conference in order to try to fend him off I see pulled an ornamental Tosk from a whale which was on the wall it was funny for any use not to try to stop the attack the attack was than chase down to London Bridge and the number not a member of the public gonna far extinguisher on sprayed back in his face and members of the public then how old the attacker was man call on down even though he said he was wearing some sort of explosive device that ended up turned out to be fake but they held him down until the police called to the scene ultimately the police shot him dead and Simon briefly there will be questions about his release from prison last year now I'm certainly because he was jailed back in twenty twelve for a plot to blow up part of the city of London the London Stock Exchange and he was released there who in twenty eighteen in December of last year on the license now that means he should have been very closely monitored he would have had to report to the authorities so the police is saying a key part of their investigation now is to really discover how he was able to carry out this attack sunny joins reporting from central London no moto as prime minister Joseph Muscat is under increasing pressure to resign over the case of the murdered journalist and anti corruption activist Daphne Carolina Gillis yes she was killed by a car bomb in twenty seventeen this week sort to ministers and Mr muskrats chief of staff Keith chambray step down from that post arrested on Tuesday Mr shimmery was released on Thursday sparking accusations of a cover up early on Friday Mr most got said the main suspect in the journalist's killing the tycoon Yahgan Finnick would not be granted immunity to disclose what he knows about the case and he was later released on bail three people are awaiting trial for her murder but the police investigation is now focusing on who ordered the killing and why and it's important to say that you open finicky chambray and indeed Conrad Missy or deny any wrong doing well let's speak on the line from motor to Herman Greg who's a journalist with the times of Malta home and welcome to the program morning I would first about the prime minister how vulnerable does he look this morning I'm very vulnerable he's where he went he himself said that he will take the necessary action action to step down from his justice is done now we heard yesterday that he had informed close close associates with him does he intends to step down the minutes the prime suspect in the rankings and I said you were going to say next is it the businessman who was at the moment spectacle for engineer that that the the bomb plot and what we understand is dance the man he is arranged the prime minister will step down there's too much pressure at the moment just put that pressure into words the white a public view we've seen these pictures of of people gathering and protesting and demonstrating on the streets of of the letter how was it felt like to witness that and be a part of that quite bizarre actually because Joseph Muskat is an incredibly popular prime minister he is one of the most successful prime ministers who wins elections by a landslide he's charming he's a change the ruling labor party but since new songs and emerging about also been the proximity between the suspect and members of his own government everything changed we started seeing pro I fear the line between London and the letter is not as we would hope that we will try and restore contact no I fear not with the Herman Greg from the times of Malta you said you got the gist of the vulnerability of Mr must got in his step first onset Stephanie just a word from you on on this on a you've been following it with interest in it it's us it's a story that's become a European story hasn't it rather than just a multi story in terms of how much focus there is now yes of course it was a European story from the beginning I mean multi was just holding the presidency at the time in in twenty seventeen and just a couple of months afterwards of the this investigative journalist was was killed and sortie afterwards there was another killing in Slovakia often investigative journalist so this has become very much a European issue also in the sense of that we are back to the days when journalists get killed if they're trying to find out crimes committed by a very high ranking maybe even politicians a great he's back on the line in just one more to you because clearly the line is a little vulnerable but I wanted to ask you about whether this is change the way old remote tease people view that country absolutely the fact that you are talking to me here on the BBC on this prime time and one of the main story does more sometimes affect a small country like this we are vulnerable we it's been a fairly successful economy transition during Joseph Mohr Scott tenure on but it seems like almost a house of cards here how can I put it to I mean we're seeing business is being a **** reluctance to touch Malta we're hearing people there are things more dollars on mafia island and this is very very water because this is a tranquil islands you know it's a safe country and people don't like what's happening over here and this is why he was seeing street protests for around now thank you very much and thank you for bearing with us as that line that will fall to the little Herman Greg of the times of Malta more on that some you know should sent to Mars program is what you're listening to the BBC world service how many stories British government sources say.

I'm so excited to hear. I'm so happy. You're here. I have been following your journeys since two thousand fourteen only because that's when he launched lipstick ashville right is. Yeah. That's amazing. I didn't realize that. I know the long I actually just this morning. Looks back to my emails because I was trying to remember when it was in. It's crazy that time goal is that fast. My lipstick birthday is coming up in actually like two weeks. Congratulations. Four years. I cannot believe I really can't leave. It's been long. That's amazing. We'll have to let people know what the looks just roam it. So start can you give an overview who are you? What do you do where do you live? Okay. I'm Stephanie Wilson. Stephanie or staffer this whatever whatever rolled off the time. And I live in Nashville Tennessee, I'm a Denver native. I grew up in Colorado. But I've lived in the south for a long time now, which is just totally crazy to me. I'm an author of podcast care and speaker, and I have my thing is helping twenty and thirty something women with their most important relationships. So that's their relationship with God with themselves with their friends with their significant others with their work. And this is so important to me for a couple of reasons. One is I knew that we we must be missing her life like when those areas of our lives over those relationships are going, well, it's like the sweetest part of life. But we've also seen that win those areas of our lives aren't healthy when we don't feel safe and known and loved these different relationships that's feeling to hide and cover up and put on math and be someone different. And we aren't able to show up as the versions of ourselves as the best best of ourselves. We're not able to do the things that we were. Needed to do in the world. And so I love getting to walk with women as sort of a friend and a bit of a mentor just helping us all have great relationships with all of our people with our God ourselves because when we do that our lives are so much better and more fine. But also, we're able to really do amazing things in the world as the very best versus I I love that. So much. And I know the listening is gonna love that too. Because we usually talk a lot on coming enforcement about how to love you to work, but huge components with the rest of your life and relationships as well, you know, if things aren't going well at home, or with your friendships like you said, you don't feel known or you don't feel understood like, you're not gonna have satisfied and work or you're gonna feel all that stress from you. If you're not interested there and bring it home, and all that there's I love the full package view that you're working to serve. Hello. So okay. You do a lot of things with all that with your writing and speaking podcasting. So in a world of crazy job titles for everyone likes to be like a guru at something. Right. What if you have some of everything what would be your dream job title or your alternate?.
