Adam Rust is director of financial services at the Consumer Federation of America. Shoppers who use pay later because that's never simple as sounds it shoppers who use pay later credit and don't make their payments on time or who don't have enough money in their checking accounts to cover the automatic payment withdrawals can get hit with costly penalties and sometimes damaged credit. The Consumer Federation of America and the Center for Responsible Lending surveyed shoppers in California who use buy now pay later and found that many don't really know what they're signing up for and the financial costs. Consumer understanding of buy now pay later is not very high Peter Smith is a senior researcher at the Center for Responsible Lending people really do think of it as being fairly similar to a credit card but have it some does key differences. According to that just released survey 37 % of those who use pay later financing said they had incurred a bank overdraft fee in the last six months 16 % paid a late or rescheduling fee. As buy now pay later grows in popularity so do the complaints. In the last three years the Better Business Bureau has closed a combined total of 11 ,000 complaints against Affirm, Afterpay, Klarna, Sezzle and Zip. All five companies had average customer ratings of about one out of five. Something else to consider. Buy now pay later financing does not provide the same legal protections you get when you pay with card. a credit Something most consumers don't realize surveys show which is why consumer advocates are urging the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau to regulate these loans the same way it regulates credit cards. So here's the bottom line Buy now pay later can help improve your cash flow if you don't buy things you can't really afford. all You make the payments on time every time and you don't use buy now pay later for more than one purchase. pay You off the first loan before you consider taking out a second one. "Time. Four people are dead after an SUV was hit by a truck Maryland State Police say 72 year old Charles Black the third was driving a Chevy Equinox heading west on Liberty Road in Westminster. He had stopped to attempt a left onto Skidmore Road when the truck was hit from behind by a Saturn. That impact sent the truck into the eastbound lanes of Liberty Road which is when Ford a F -150 struck the Chevy. Black was pronounced dead at the scene along with two other passengers 69 year old Barbara Black and 63 year old Debbie Hill of New Windsor Maryland. Two teenagers were also in the SUV both were flown to shock trauma in Baltimore and that's where 17 year old Gage Black was pronounced dead. The truck driver was taken to a local hospital for treatment. The crash is under investigation and investigators don't think impaired driving was a factor. Maryland hospitals have made progress on cutting wait times at emergency rooms but they're still the worst in the nation. The average wait time in Maryland hospitals is eight hours that's from the time you arrive at the emergency room to the time you're admitted. According to the latest data from the Maryland Health Services Cost Review Commission that's actually an improvement over the 11 hours recorded earlier this year. The Commission's review from September showed Antis Whiteoak recorded a wait time of 16 hours. Holy Cross suburban and Shady Grove showed wait times between six and seven hours. Hospitals have submitted plans to cut those times under something called Eddie, the emergency department dramatic improvement effort. Kate Ryan, UTOP News.
