"The call awful offer one of Ohio's leading criminal defense firms, your host of for the defense. Columbus Attorney Brad Scuffle. If you don't like what's going on in America right now, whether it's critical race theory, inflation, the border, um, internationally kind of feel like we're falling, sliding backwards. Big congressional race here in the 15th district. We have two congressional races in Ohio next year. And Pardon me this year. The primary is, uh, is happening right now. For Steve Stivers Open spot. That's the 15th and on the line is with me is Senator State Senator Stephanie Coons E. Senator. Thank you for joining us this morning. How are you? I'm doing Well, Brad, Thank you and Eric for hosting me and thank you to the listening audience as well. Absolutely. Your name is well known. And you've you've been around the block here a little bit politically. Um, you had a big week last week, didn't you? I'll toot your horn for you. So first of all, you passed a but you're you're working on a really big, important piece of legislation against hazing. Which as this Defense lawyer and having dealt with a lot of substance abuse and colleges and disciplinary matters and fraternity and sororities. That is very important. So we want to talk to you about that. And then you get a big endorsement from the Franklin County Executive Committee. The GOP is that right? That's correct. So Senator that's first quick talk about your legislation on the anti hazing. So as you as you mentioned Brad, there was an incident a couple of years ago. Now we're a young man from Dublin. One of my constituents, Colin Wyatt. Was at OU and was the victim of fraternity hazing and passed away. And since then his mom, especially but his entire family has been leading the charge to really strengthen and increase increased penalties, but really strengthen education and transparency. For our our young people when they're heading off to college and for their families to understand. Have there been violations of the policies at the university for any of these groups and organizations. And really provide students and parents with some of the information they need when they're making a decision about whether or not to pledge a fraternity or sorority. So, so huge. So important. I come from Greek Life Miami University in the late eighties. And I don't even want to. I'm not going to Ra Mantis eyes. The hazing that went on as a rite of passage. It is not. It's very dangerous. Um, and having been involved in the new case up there in bowling green. And that's where Senator I started reaching out to you saying I want I want kids. I want fraternity and sorority pledges and active to have the ability to blow the whistle. And say, I don't want to go to this event tonight because I heard traditionally you throw up in 15 to 20 minutes or 25 minutes. Can we speak? Does the legislation address any type of whistle blower or encourage kids to step forward students step forward. Yes, it does it actually, which charge an M two for any administrator, Employees faculty member teacher. Anyone who with associated with the organization. Who recklessly permit hazing. Um and you know, I think the other thing that we've been hearing throughout the testimony on Senate Bill 1 26 is that we heard from Tyler Perry know from Miami. Who, um, It's a survivor of being hazed, and it's going around telling his story. And I think you know, kids. At some point. I think they know that it's coming. But I don't think that they knew some of the severity of what was happening to your point. I think we've also been hearing um that it's increasingly becoming more dangerous. I mean, it's always been Dangerous and it should have been unacceptable. Even, you know, grabbing you and I were growing up. But the increased amount of alcohol that's being used in the drugs. We've seen two deaths in Ohio and that's too many, too too many. Already there is an increase in callousness. All across society and increased callousness really trickles down to the kids, Uh, pivoting over to your endorsement from the Franklin County Executive Committee, GOP Uh, You, do you, uh There was an endorsement. Steve Stivers has endorsed another one of your opponents understanding that Donald Trump's endorsed another opponent. The Franklin County GOP endorses you. Uh, it certainly seems like, uh, those here in central Ohio know who's most likely to to win. To be elected. It's the number one thing that we need is an electable candidate. I think it's quite telling that the Franklin County Executive Committee GOP endorsed you. What is your? What do you think about that? I mean, I know what you thought. But what going into that? What were you thinking? You know, I'm really grateful that the for the endorsement, obviously, as you said, the Franklin County Central Committee knows me best. This is my home county. And I think that you know, a lot of people are very focused on the primary. Obviously, I need to win the primary. Um, that's the first step. But, you know, we need to look ahead a little bit to the general election. We have Democrats. Who are intent on holding the house right now, they have 220 seats in D. C and Republicans have 211 that can beat their score vacancies. And I think you know our number one my number one goal for running in any election. Um, has been to continue to hold Republican seats. That's what I've done as a state senator here in Franklin County, and it's what I intend to do with this Congressional seat. We don't know. What it's going to look like in redistricting, but it could potentially become more competitive. I think we need a candidate who can beat Democrats and hold Republican states which you've proven yourself to be able to do also tout your statistics on 2020. In 2020. I actually outperformed the president by 13,000 votes in my district and the and the sitting congressman by 2500. And in the precincts that we overlapped so And I think the bottom line is we want this congressional district and Republic control and the strong its strongest candidate to take on the Democrat. It's like we're going to be a suburban woman here in Franklin County and I think that's what we're going to need to hold the state descend Nancy Pelosi into retirement. Yes. Well, so, uh, for our listeners, this is Senator State Senator Stephanie Kinsey Running for Steve Stivers. Congressional seat. The 15th. Senator Kinsey, can you please tell us the just kind of give us a general outline of the 15th? So that listeners know all wait. This is who I could vote for in the primary. So tells the Map what it looks like. Yeah, So there's 12 counties from Franklin all the way down to Athens that are included in this district. But a lot of the you know the the votes. The bulk of the votes come from the suburban portion of Franklin County and partly Fairfield. And, you know, I think as we've been making our way, as our campaign's been making our way into all of the counties It's increasingly just as I said before becoming more important to me, Um, that we make sure we hold this in Republican hands. Um, we don't want to see You know, in a November 21 general election. It's not a presidential year. It's you know, it's an off election years, so to speak. We don't want a disengagement from voters to cause this to, uh, lean, less Republican. We do know that there is a drop off when When the former president is not on the ballot. Trump voters are not as excited to get out and vote. We're seeing that across the country and other special elections. Normally, it's about a 33% turnout. We're seeing that as low as 19%. And so I think One of the main goals is to represent this district well and hold this district in all parts of the congressional seat from Get there. From Franklin to down to Athens County Senator Stephanie Coons is outperformed the president in his district. President Trump has beat Democrats just received the endorsement of the Franklin County Executive Committee. The GOP Can raise money works her butt off. And what I love and representation in a republic like us is accessible. And I have the ability to to get to know Stephanie Kinsey when, when asked her for some assistance and educating me on this hazing legislation and and of course your you're leaning into your community. Is where we need our future leaders to come from lean in and you were leaning in. Where can our listeners find you and support you? Um Stephanie Kinsey. My website is team Stephanie qz dot com.

I'll be I'll be watching for photos from your your Twitter. Your socials. We want to welcome state Senator Stephanie Kinsey with us this morning a news radio 6 10 W. T. V and we were watching closely Collins law and I do believe I don't want to jinx anything but it looks like congratulations are in order. Stephanie. Yes, thank you. Collins lost in a bill 1 26 passed both the House and the Senate and is on its way to the governor. There's actually going to be a bill signing next week with him and with the families who really were the driving force and the advocates behind this piece of legislation. Stephanie could see is with us state senator and we're going to talk about that. Your run for the 15th District U S congressional district. Just a second. You know, we talked about this before and when the bill was rolling through the house and the Senate Stephanie, I I realized there needs to be some type of layers of provisions in place. Does some of it also come down to dare I say common sense as well with this. I think really, The important part of the bill is to really change the culture on college campuses. It's really to educate the students on the dangers of hazing. And, um you know, we've unfortunately had two tragic deaths here in Ohio Colin Y into the bill is named after at OU and then Just recently is this spring with stone folds at BGs? You and I think, um, you know, one of the nice things about the bill this year around or this time around. That really helped, I think, push it to get past where the over 20,000 students and from bowling Green and 5000 students from the University of Dayton and then students from all over the state who really pushed To say that they wanted stricter penalties. They wanted increased education, and they want to transparency to see if there were violations at their at their school, and what organizations might have might have been condoning hazing state Senator Stephanie Could. She is with us this morning on college law that's about to be signed into law with Governor Mike DeWine. Do we know Stephanie? Do we know is that today tomorrow? Do we know what he's signing this? Um it's going to be next week. It's gonna be next week, okay after the holiday, So if you could dissect this a little bit, Let's say sadly and we hope there isn't by the way, but let's hope there are. Let's say there's an incident where we know there's hazing going on at a campus. What happens what kind of actions will be taken with this law? So with us with this new law, the actions of the university have in place currently, um, won't change, but they will be required to post on a website a place where ID. Any of the incidents that are taking place are available for parents and for students to view for up to five years. One of the things we heard testimony from the families. Was that they wished that they had had an opportunity to find, um, that there have been incidences of hazing on their campus before they had joined the or pledged the fraternity and so having that publicly available is not only good for families and for students who are looking to protect, potentially join, but it's also a deterrent, I think for the organizations Uh, to really crack down on Hasting within their own organizations. If there is anything going on, all right, state Senator Stephanie Coons is with us. Stephanie. If you don't mind switching gears, I want to talk about your run for Congress 15th district. It was left by, of course, Steve Stivers talk about a very competitive district to be running. Then how's it going so far? Well, so far, it's going very well. I'm excited to have the opportunity to to run for the seat. And, you know, I think we live in the greatest country that was ever imagined. And I think with the right leadership our best days, my head How do you cut through Stephanie? The competitiveness of the 15 district. In the amount of people that are running you have. Carrie, of course, has been endorsed by Trump. How do you cut through that? Well, I think you know, I'm grateful for the opportunity to have served the majority of residents of this district currently in my state Senate seat, and I'm hopeful that people will recognize that I've been a voice and a fighter for, um maybe people that are normally not having a seat at the table. I've done a lot of work on human trafficking. I fought for victims of domestic violence, do a lot of work with mortality and for Children at the Statehouse, and I'm hoping that some of those issues and things that I've cared about Over the over my time and service public service. We'll speak to the voters of the 15th congressional district and maybe set me apart as a different kind of voice for for Congress. We haven't had a Republican woman. In the delegation for in our congressional delegation in almost a decade, and I will. I will also back you up with the human trafficking and the domestic violence. I've seen firsthand your work, so I definitely applaud you for that. By the way on a lighter side notes. I saw you. I think it was that the Pickaway County Fair it was the county fair back to normal again. How'd it look that there's the fair is looking great. Pickaway did a wonderful job. And excited to see a few more on my calendar right after the fourth, So looking forward to being back back in fair season. What? What's your What's your go to fair food? You know you're going to laugh. I don't eat a lot of food out of that there. I spent a lot of time. I love talking to the kids in the four age, um, that do all of their projects and then obviously raise their animals. I find them to be so fascinating. Why they pick, you know, doing a raving a sheep or a pig or a goat? We have some friends that are doing all three this year..

Who, um, It's a survivor of being hazed, and it's going around telling his story, and I think you know kids at some point. I think they know that it's coming. But I don't think that they knew some of the severity of what was happening to your point. I think we've also been hearing That it's increasingly becoming more dangerous. It's I mean, it's always been dangerous, and it should have been unacceptable. Even you know, robbing you and I were growing up. But the increased amount of alcohol that being used in the drugs we've seen two deaths in Ohio and that's too many, too too many. Already there is an increase in callousness. All across society and increased callousness really trickles down to the kids, Uh, pivoting over to your endorsement from the Franklin County Executive Committee, GOP Uh, you do You, uh There was an endorsement. That's the first step, but, you know, we need to look ahead a little bit to the general election. We have, um Democrats who are intent on holding the house right now. They have 220 seats in D. C and Republicans have 211. This can beat their score vacancies. And I think you know our number one my number one goal for running in any election. Um, has been to continue to hold Republican seats, and that's what I've done as a state senator here in Franklin County, and it's what I intend to do. With this congressional seat..

"Pick your state. Whatever. Are you worried about this at all? I mean, does it seem to be a note? Frank Larose is right on top of it, but Any thoughts on this? Yeah. No, I'm you know mark for me. I mean, it's Ohio. That's what really focused on. I feel really good. Here. I served with Frank and the State Senate. He fantastic. He's done a great job. I have a copy with a bunch of guys on Friday morning, one of my guys going to go be a judge at a polling location tomorrow. He's very excited. He feels very confident. You know, I mean, there's always been hiccups there just now more pronounced and no more media driven Now when there is a hiccup, and obviously this 12 congressional district was affected by there. 50 ballots that were wrong and you know that's fix and we work with the board of elections in Franklin County and spoke with them directly, You know, on a daily basis for a while, and, you know, we feel confident that that's Taken care of, and now I have full confidence in the system that we have set up here. Obviously, we'll have poll watchers out smart observers on just make sure you know in. We know that overall nationwide we know there's going to be some states where they're not going to be declaring a winner as Faras the presidential race. Here locally, You're going to know whether or not by tomorrow night if you want correct. Yes, I will Mark. I'll know whether or not I want tomorrow. Yes, okay, And you will so and you will be winning. There's no there's no question in my mind. I thinkyou Ah think you've got it and like we said Thie. The information that you get is looking very positive. It is and you know, world love. As you said, we've worked really hard have really enjoyed. It had a great RV tour this weekend. It was a little dicey yesterday with the 40 to 50 mile an hour wind with the motor home buddy from Zane's are there he took way had a little smoking the bandit thing going on. We were doing TV channels like paint breaker, 19 and hey was a snowman. Another guy was called the Gear jammer. So we have a lot of fun with the yesterday keeping an entertaining so but You know the people out about with all that wind, even for the stop that we were making were fantastic. We want the Delaware County, the city of Delaware on Saturday afternoon. Probably have 7500 people there. Pablo was up there doing his Cuban sandwiches right there in downtown says Great. That's great stuff, man. That's great to hear that. Um, so we're seeing across the U. S. And here even downtown Columbus. I know a lot of places air boarded up in Troy, did you ever? I mean, you've been at this a while, Have you ever witnessed anything like this? This is so bizarre and surreal to me, but man at the same time kind of scary but your thoughts on this, It's it's not It is concerning mark and talking. The couple promised place officers last Friday and attacks it with a couple of move the weekend and you know they're really concerned. With what potentially could happen down there. So, yeah, we'll say a prayer for him and make sure that everyone stays safe and does the right thing. But, yeah, it's real concerning and and and that's part of the thing. What's going on in politics right now in this country and It's unfortunate, but look, we're going to make sure that we encourage people to do the right thing. Communicate with him. Talked to him. You know if you can support your local law enforcement out there, I know you guys are big backers somebody up in the Keep Carol, the F O P and Ah, you know it. We just need to make sure that we help those guys and ladies that were there for Troy Balderson for Congress joining us now. So how does this work then for a victory type party that you're probably needed to be planning right about now, Let's not put I guess the horse in front of the card here too much, but Think over. It kind of puts a kind of puts the kibosh on that doesn't enter, does it? It does mark. You know this is going to be real quiet, Real quiet, so and you know that That's the main thing. And that's the piece of a little bit different this year dealing with Kovar, but I'm not going to do what we've done in the past, for sure on makeup relocate. We'll do something on our own. We're not going to be with any other parties. But we're going to watch another races. You know, we got Other things going on out there with the Supreme Court justice race. I've got to make sure we get Sharon Kennedy and Judy French over the finish line. Now the KFC You know, the one friends I'm trying to help in the Senate is Stephanie Coons in Stephanie's great She's there in Franklin County. To the Great Republic. An urgent communiqu. She's she's a moderate. He could work on a bipartisan level. And you know, she rode around with this yesterday doing the bus tour when we went to a couple stops there in Dublin and some other places. You know, I'm hoping that she gets out and gets it done, too. And get across the finish line. Very good. Troy Balderson for Congress,.
