"Thrown around. First of all, the very best players in this game from Magic Johnson to shack to LeBron to covey. You name them. Players who have cemented their legend and had already cemented their legend more so than Tatum have had worse, if not bad finals. So it happens, okay? Acting like it doesn't happen, is ridiculous. As you mentioned, he's really young. This team is so clearly ahead of schedule, they've been ahead of schedule during every single one of their playoff runs. The only reason they were in those Eastern Conference Finals, all those years because of the east was kind of middling. And credit to them, they took advantage. This idea that, I mean, you look at the box score and it's like 22 7 and 7. I think 36% shooting. It's obviously not good. But when you watch his performance in the context of each game, show me the game where you're like, this guy's straight up playing off. I mean, game one he couldn't score. They won the game anyway because of his playmaking. Game 6 he was bad. Game 6 was probably the only time I was like, he didn't, he did it step up. And to say, oh, that means he's the kind of player that can't step up after the number of times during this postseason whether or was it game 5 against Miami game 6 against Milwaukee, which to me is still one of the most impressive games of any tea or any player in the playoffs. Yeah, he ran into a championship defense. He ran into a team that it's like LeBron going up against the spurs in 2007, a team that was, you know, people thought old at the time, I would say I don't think Tatum's quite as good as LeBron, but these things happen. It's a learning experience. You have to lose in the final sometimes. It's not always going to be sweet. So to me, I'm encouraged after this playoff run, as someone who it's no secret if you listen to this podcast. I'm a heat fan. I'm not looking forward to playing Jason Satan in a playoff series. And by the way, they beat the consensus best teams in the east, okay? They beat the number one seed, they beat Giannis, they beat Katie in the nets, who had Kyrie. So what more could he have done? He wasn't necessarily the best player in all those series, but he was more than just carrying his weight. So I'm like no desire to listen to any like what's wrong with Tatum takes after this series. Chris, I know you got to run a little bit early. Do you have anything you want to say about Tatum? How maybe he's going to be your number two? I know number two on the top 100 was waffling a little bit. Just what are your thoughts? I don't think he's going to occupy that spot for me. Or for the aggregate when we got to compile our own notes. It was an uneven series for him. It was weird in the sense that he shot the ball fine from distance. He just could not get comfortable and really find a comfort zone from inside the art, going to the basket, I kind of felt like he and Brown both held onto the ball a beat too long, particularly when the defense was kind of ready and prepared for them. At the rim, and..

"That's disdain. That's just yeah, that is just smoked. Grant Williams, we don't even need to get into it. But it's okay. I was going to say something about step. Oh, I was going to say that was a shifting narrative coming into these finals that I saw in a few places that was like, it's crazy that there's no top 5 player in these finals, like guaranteed top 5 player in these fights. A prevailing narrative about the death of the super team and super duper stars leading their teams to the championship and I was like Steph Curry constant state media's best efforts to turn Tatum into a top 5 player. I can't believe that. We're about to we're about to talk about Tatum, but please lay off. I mean, okay. Okay, I will. But Steph, yeah, I think he has to be in the top 5. In our top 100. Absolutely commendable. My brother. If he's not, given that he was last year, right? He's not in our top 5 this year. We're going to get some angry emails. What all NBA? I think he was actually on. I think he was fourth. I'm looking at our list now, we had Katie one, Giannis two LeBron three, Steph was fourth in front of jokic, who was 5. LeBron's taking a little bit of a tumble. I hate to break it down. This is gonna be really interesting. Step will probably be three then, is my guess and maybe jokic four. I think LeBron's gonna get a lot of motivation out of my list. Well, unfortunately yeah, we also have to, the tricky part, of course, is pitching it forward. So it's like you have a guy like when was when was the last time KD LeBron escaped last year on our list, by the way? In the top ten? Who? Hardin? Better than beat. He was 7. It's disgusting. Oh my God. So I would be closer to 77 this year. When was this? When was the last time KD KD Kawhi LeBron and Steph were all healthy during the playoffs? That's what I want. That's what I do. I know. I just need to see that. Hopefully. And that's going to make the playoffs next year. Do you guys want to talk I don't want to talk about Jayson Tatum, but I have it here on the outline. I guess just what was your impression of his performance in the finals, his entire postseason run. As I will say, credit to your guy, D wade, really the only parallel that I can see in recent NBA history for someone that young 24 under being the best player in a team that gets to the finals little and winning the championship. Tatum, wade, LeBron and O 7, that's like the whole list. I might be missing someone. I think that's like, that's it. It's pretty impressive stuff. Yeah. So first of all, shout out to D wade, don't get me started on the heat ruined the first 7 years of his career. Absolutely botched it. They did. They did. They flew too close to the sun. It's like the Lakers argument with LeBron, it's like they wanted title, but every other year has been a disaster. I don't know that the Antoine walker James posey Jason Williams veteran core of role players was the smartest move in hindsight. But I will actually mount a defense for Jason Sanders because I've seen people being like, that was an embarrassing series for him..

"They didn't know what their rotation was until late in the second round of the playoffs, and then a key part of that rotation goes down. So to your point, it all just goes back to Steph because he makes the entire organization's life so much easier. Agreed. Yeah. As Steve Kerr said after the game, none of this happens without Steph Curry. I wrote a story in November about the resurgence of their offense when they got off to that hot start. They were in Brooklyn and they had, I think, the best offense in the NBA. After last season, they finished, I don't even know what the same. They think they finished 21st in offensive rating. I could be making that number up, but almost positive. And they looked like they looked like the warriors again. And it was like, I asked everybody in after the game that came to the podium or the interview room or whatever. And Kerr Wiggins, draymond, and Steph, I asked him, what's the key to this renaissance here? And Wigan's just laughed and was like, Steph Curry. Is that a serious question? Everything is about sniff curry. He's just amazing. And we didn't even talk about the production..

"But they weren't able to get enough stops in those moments. It felt like Al Horford hit three or four threes in a row that would drop the lead to 13 and then the warriors would come back and hit another one that would make it 16. Al Horford was the Jon Snow sword meme. In the second half, just trying to watch enough TV to know what that even means. Don't admit that on TV. Game of Thrones brother? I didn't watch and watch Game of Thrones and it sounded like for the last season I was better off for not having done it. So I learned a lot of TBI. Well, I don't watch games. You've seen the affair, but you've never seen Game of Thrones. Yup. And I'm proud of it too. And I'm proud of it. I'm proud of it. Use my spare time watching basketball. I don't know what you do. Aside from watching the affair, but harford, yeah, I mean, Horford kept hitting threes and you kind of felt like it was weird 'cause I was also in that space night, I tweeted this like trying to figure out whether I should start my story without going to have to write overnight. And I'm like, are the Celtics going to do this or not? Because it would be nice to know whether I need to get a head start on writing this piece. So it was a little bit annoying from that standpoint, but you did get the impression in the first half when they had their highest turnover half of the playoffs. This probably isn't going to end well for this team, even if they mount a little bit of a comeback. That was the case. It was even as someone with no dog in the fight, not caring who won. It was frustrating to watch because it kind of that was where the series became less competitive. Boston couldn't afford to turn the ball over and still have a chance. It also felt like every time Horford hit a three, it was like the most random three the warriors would come back and hit the next. It was like auto border. It's like what? Yeah, it was like stuff coming back. Oh my God, draymond green. So yeah, the turnovers. I actually have an email here real quick that I just want to read..

It's country summer country days country day. Yeah country day zone. But it's you know. I think it's like a mixed bag to be honest. I don't think everybody thinks he's like a lock to be in the hall of fame. I think it's a mixed bag fan. Now we are going in. And of course. Detroit's been wallace. Who was a key cog in that championship game team. He of course is the hall of famers. Divide from the people. I've talked about one. A scientific poll. But i thought more people feel better about ben being ending chris Well i'll tell you what and we'll get into this later. When i heard that been made it i was like chris. Webber has to be in. Chris was a better player and been now been had a role that was critical and he was a key cog obviously on that i call them bad boys the remix that that third championship detroit one but chris. Webber was a better player than been. But you know what better impact. They'll ben was unbelievable. He had a bit better impact on a championship team. A team that went to the finals two years in a row he won just a role player he was a big party was a role player though. No going to be in this and it's doing of ood. He was huge. All

"He's got this like crazy close out and and foot quickness to stay with legitimate point guards out on the perimeter so like i just wouldn't want any part of that i just think and you're in a series with erik spoelstra to boot like the heat i could almost. I could definitely see the heat beating the sixers. I could see the heat beating the bucks. I could see the heat. I don't know if i can see the heat beating the nets. Maybe i'm just really high on the on the on the miami heat no. I think you're absolutely right. That's the team that a lot of a lot of the favorites are gonna be fearing and it's crazy because imagine being the one seed in either conference like in the western conference reward could be a first round series with steph curry in the eastern conference. You reward for winning. The one seat could be a first round series with the miami heat. I mean they've been so up and down here they haven't been able to get that same level of late season. Push that. We're seeing from both boston and new york and so you know. Maybe they're just thinking well. Hey look you know. This has been a crazy year and a half. We don't necessarily need to gun down the stretch for seething. Whoever we draw we draw. And you know we're feeling good that we can challenge basically anybody we get. I mean milwaukee. As well i mean that's kind of a nightmare scenario for them like they would much rather have teams like new york or charlotte or atlanta. You know compared to miami right. And so i do wonder you think we're going to see any seatings kind of jockeying when we get to the very end of teams may be trying to avoid miami. I'm not sure it's going to be possible for those top teams or for miami. Do you think that they're going to try to make a push to get to six to avoid the plan because even though we're we're hyping them up here a little bit. They have not been very consistent in their offense has not been that good. You get them into a plane scenario. Where the offense goes flat. I mean that's pretty. That's pretty dicey as well. Where do you think they're going to finish in the seating order by the end of the season. I mean right now. i think they're in seventh behind the knicks. Celtics hawks like i like. I feel like boston's turned a corner. I feel like the knicks are really solid just because they bring it on defense and their defense carries even against some of the better teams And i just liked the hawks. I don't think the hawks are gonna drop too far based on once you know once they get a little bit healthier..

"We're just gonna skip over that part all right. So what did basketball reference tell you when you did this. Well harden statistically if you just look at the total numbers if you look at some of the advanced numbers he just isn't quite on par with steph. I've mean steph is steph leads all those candidates in p. e. r. true shooting wind shares per forty. Voor just all like the advanced catchall scurries just like there. And i have. I have a stat for you that i think you'll absolutely love the gap between curry. Who leads all players in offensive plus minus the gap between curry and the runner up. Who happens to be dame right. Now is the same difference between dame and the thirty sixth-ranked tiger rome think about that. That's one of the most astonishing statistics. You'll ever hear. No it's pretty wild. I mean he's been way out in front for a while on that stat. You know the rpm guys do tend to like tinker with their formula every couple years. I do wonder of curry broke it and like they're going to have to go back to the drawing board. It'd be like all right. There's something crazy going on here so on that basis alone. Are you taking luca and steph. Is that your. Is that your final answer. I have stephan. Luca penciled in my first team right now yes and that was tough because you know i love dame and i think what dame has done i mean. Maybe it's like a little bit of recency bias and dame has been relatively struggling Recently and man. It's tough 'cause like you go back. And you think about the season he had and carrying the portland trailblazers. When cj was out in winner was out having one of the better clutch seasons in memory. He was absolutely incredible so it it stings to put dame where i've put him Which is second team. I have him on. Second team with harden But i don't know like steph. What he's doing now is just something that you have to like honor. It's so unprecedented. Even for him. I didn't think he would ever be better than he was when he when he when he was unanimous. Mvp in two thousand and sixteen and the extended stretch. That we've seen now is better than that. And it's with like inferior teammates around him. Which only makes it more impressive. And he's older i man. He was like leaving me speechless on saturday night. No i hear you for sure i do. That sounds to me a lot like recency bias to be honest. But i look. I'll have dame right now. But i think there's a good chance he loses that spot. Especially if steph keeps this thing going I would have hardened dame i team luca and steph second team so we basically we just flipped but i think that four way race is really really close in it. Kinda just comes down to a matter of taste and like you're saying matter of values do you care more about the statistical production or the team performance and for me. I try to balance both. And so i give a little bit more weight to the team. Production and mostly..

"About job. They also need to make sure. Composite gets about six inch heels out there so he can match up little defensively. some people Yokich is the least of their concerns. Man his playoff numbers are going to be absolutely wild. And i'm actually kind of looking forward to unleashed yokich in the playoffs. Because you know. We saw a little frustration. That boston game where i think. He was feeling like maybe teammates. An down or not everybody's competing at the highest level right No excuses in the postseason yorkers will just put everybody on his back it should be really really fun If i were them i would seriously consider playing some these seeding games Just because i really don't like that lakers matchup for them. And i think one of the unintended if you want i mean winners is not the right word. But the unintended beneficiaries of murray's injury is absolutely the lakers because they were looking at a situation where if they fill him to play in that was gonna be their worst case scenario. They're gonna visually tough path through the playoffs if they can get you. Know kind of a hampered nuggets in the first round the jazz in the second round. I think the lakers are feeling great about that don't you. Yeah probably Can i can. I zoom out with you for two seconds and ask you kind of a big picture nuggets question. Yes are they screwed. Is the question well kinda so we are left to assume that jamal murray is likely going to miss the rest of this season but then because of the timing of this injury. There's a good chance. He misses all of next season as well right or a vast majority of it. Yeah they put time line usually at nine to twelve months. I'm sure they're going to be really careful with it. And you know. Nine months would be right around january. So you're still getting a good chunk of the the regular season if it's the full twelve months. You're looking at the start of the playoffs next year. Which i don't think he's going to just come back and then play high intensity basketball in the playoffs. That just doesn't seem smart. What do i know now is do you think or do you think at all this impacts yokich is next contract and just like so. Let's like is like stepping back for two seconds. So they're going to. We're remaining that they're not going to win the championship. This season despite being. I think a lot of people thought that they could win the title this year next year. Murray does not play which he probably won't they aren't going to win the title next year either..

"I mean obviously spacing without horford has drastically improved for philadelphia. And i think that that trickles down to your quality of shot selection. There was an awful lot is bad bailout shots from bead in the mid range the crazy fall away as the leaners the you know just desperation shots hero shots in some situations. I do think he likes to be viewed as kind of is do it all big man and sometimes he was just taking it too far anecdotally from the eye test. I feel like he's tightened a lot of that up and it's probably because he doesn't find himself such dire situations this year because they do have better spacing and because i think he's in better shape and kinda can kind of get to things more quickly. Would you agree with that. Yeah one hundred percent. I mean having you know horford and no josh richardson instead. A instead now having seth curry danny green Tobias harris having the shooting season of his career. There's just a lot more space to to operate. And i just want also quickly highlight My former editor mike parada At espy nation He wrote a a really really awesome piece about embeds balance on his on his subject newsletter And how embiid's ability to kind of face up more. This season has improved his ability to knock down those mid range shots and those long twos. So i think that that's a factor as well and i think embiid said Recently i think it was after the mavericks game. He kinda compared himself a little bit to kevin. Durant said that's the type of offensive player. He wants to be. He doesn't wanna be just back to the basket. Sh like old school shack tape. And all this centers that for all the singers wannabe beyond say all the big men wanna be katie. It's just hilarious to me. I mean you know. He's doing the same thing working on the perimeter game constantly. It's so strange. Because you know katie's given up seventy five pounds of some of these guys that feels like and yet they watch him handle the ball. That looks like fun. I want to do that too. And beat is a good shooter though for eighty percent free throw shooter and he gives to the line an awful lot. That's been one of the key. Strengths for this philadelphia team. Is him getting to that foul line. You know just eleven times a game and really being able to deliver their. I think they might be number. One in free throws or free throw attempts this season as a team. That's a huge advantage when you're going into the playoffs especially if you're looking at under undersized frontline among the opponents right so that that's huge in their favor but what you are seeing. Is that look this guy. Shot selection was so bad in past years and or his conditioning was so bad in past years. So he's settling for bad shots and he's way below where he should be if you get a wide open mid range shot. I don't expect you to hit that at an eighty percent clip. Like you do a a free throw but it shouldn't be completely crazy and surprising that you can hit out a really good right. I mean this goes back to lamarcus. Aldridge thing he was a great free throw shooter himself and he was awesome from those elbows. If you left him open and and that's kind of 'em beats got that soft touch. He's got good form. That's where it should be. I also think this conditioning though it comes through in a lot of different ways for embiid i mean his three point. Shooting number is up For sure his overall shooting efficiency is up his late game..

"He didn't put the clamps on stuff. Because nobody who has ever lived can put the clamps on steph in single coverage But you know when. I was watching that game particularly the fourth quarter like my big takeaways. We're mostly just the like you. Know the clippers offense is It's just really interesting particularly like when they need to get up. Ask it how they play. I mean they were trying to hunt steph curry on the defensive end. They were having his man said ball screens for over and over again and just not getting the looks that they wanted. There were a couple of times where You know they forced the switch and then was able to find like a tomb in the corner canard on the wing and those guys were able to do a little bit of damage but for the most part their offense just wasn't clicking as it did in the first half and paul george who as you said has been just like an inferno this entire season. He's his numbers. Like fifty fifty ninety shooting. It's ridiculous start for him. Good for him coming off the postseason that he habit he basically just like didn't touch the basketball down the stretch that game either which at that was Was pretty interesting But like when. I look at this clippers team you know. I'm talking about their offense offensive. I think second best in the entire nba. And when co and paul george. You're on the floor. they're stoppable normally. The defense is really where it's it's it's getting pretty interesting. I think they ranked twenty fifth or eight. Now something way up there after having a really impressive defense A last season and they obviously have quieted obviously have. Pg patrick beverley. They have some pretty good defenders on their team but like the way that they just like the defensive mistakes that they made particularly on the three point. Line with some of Golden state's three point shooters because like golden state. now has had some shooters. Damian lee is hitting forty seven percent beyond the michael moulders hitting his threes Even as more is is hitting some and kelly oubre is still just ridiculous slump but the defensive mistakes that they made miscommunication errors. There was one play where luke kennard just decided not to switch off of draymond green and he let bays more just wide open for you know he could tie issues before we took the shot and serge ibaka was like screaming at canard and these are the types of plays where yeah..

"Nick given three performers from the nba weekend. That was our. let me. Just accept this up for america that you might be wondering. What's the committee going to do win. The nfl season job transition to a side gig which is nba metal committee. We're gonna go every night in the nba. Give out a gold. Silver and bronze of monday shows even harder. Because we have to take all the game from friday saturday and sunday. I think we're starting with the bronze medalist. We ever really gone over this for first time doing it. Bronze medallists paul george. Hey way off the playoff. Who knows but i know on a sleepy night in january. There's very few guys. You'd rather have thirty nine points quiet. Leonard didn't have it. He prevented the clippers from having back to back losses for the first time all year. Leonard your bronze medallist. So medallist. Jamal murray while call the yolk. We're gonna triple jamal. Murray just drops a thirty six five and four to lead the nuggets to a critical win after a bad one and four start and then your gold medallist. There is no question about it. This might be the performance of the year. One wardell stephen curry with sixty two points in thirty six minutes. Which by the way does mean step in dream on last night combined for sixty points. So draymond maybe should be included in that. But steph sixty points against the goal of that as the warriors. Get a needed win. Over the blazers. Those kevin wilds are your bronze silver and gold medal of the evening.

"Maybe you don't win a championship them with them in this year. But in the years to come you're guaranteed to have fats whereas how many other teams are guaranteed to have some combination of two players on that level. So i certainly wouldn't do it for hard. Like the celtics are not in the position. Where james harden is such upgrade over jalen brown that you make the deal in risk potentially blowing the next ten years of your franchise out who else is out there on the market that i would that is considered a trade chip in a situation like that so i think you know jaylen brown to me is become too big to trade at this point jason. Tatum already was jalen brown. After being you know the guy you trade for kawai the guy you trade. Anthony davis at this point. Jaylen brown too big to deal. Well i mean look if not that it would be but if we're doing the hypotheticals if it were jalen brown for anthony davis tomorrow when you compare. Anthony davis jason tatum. You'd probably do it but the l. That's that's not a realistic discussion One other wrinkled to this one Coincidental to this to this podcast agenda. Because i didn't know When i had this conversation a couple of days ago that we would be discussing jaylen brown today but Back and forth with with a friend who's a fan and we were just talking about simmons and beat this and the as sixer fan you know. I wonder if you had to do over again in that draft because it went simmons ingram brown. Would simmons still be number one. I thought well we hold on an so. The your your initial reaction is always think like that's crazy. of course. Ben simmons unicorn six ten point guard at all this but i started thinking about it. You know obviously ingraham's becoming all star and jaylen brown's on his way there and when you think about two skill sets and just the offensive repertoire. That the other two guys have. The benjamin does not have at this stage and so out of curiosity i through this at at a scout who you know as seen plenty of all these guys and he like i was expecting the get the hell out of here with that question response and it was not it was you know. I think i'd take jaylen brown. The dow was literally the response. Was i throughout this..

"Get two of your face for just six bucks. Participation may single item regular price. All right let's finish howard with jalen brown. And i don't know if you put them in the most improved category but he certainly has made some real big strides in the early part of the season. Averaged twenty points per game last season as we record this right around twenty seven. His field goal percentage jumped almost ten points in forty eight percent to right around or just a cut below. Fifty eight percent is three. Point percentage around forty three percent shooting thirty eight last year. I mean this is still viewed as jason tatum team. He's the guy at the top of the food chain. But jaylen brown's closing the gap on him right now and i bring this up in the context of trade situation. So i mean we're talking top of the show about james harden. How would you look in boston. Celtics are always the epicenter of trade rumors that have been over the recent years but as jalen brown almost become too big trade and we can use hard as an example like it sounds kind of goofy but would you trade jalen brown for james harden at this point with the way brown is playing and kind of the where this has been building towards over the last couple of years. Yeah i mean look. He's twenty four. He's not even really to his like early prime wherever you know whether they say primis twenty-seven so you're like you're like pre prime on a good contract to a good contract. He's twenty four. He's i mean. I think throughout the numbers already. He's averaging twenty seven four point five four point six rebounds three assists a game shooting at a great percentage. He's a a versatile and and aggressive defender. He's a great to him. He's one of the best two way players in the league right now and look. I look at the league. Forget the like the hypothetical jalen for hardening although it's a fun discussion if you of the who says no game i look at where the league is. Chris and i think if you look at the last several champions or just the last ten years or so. This league is so much controlled by versatile. Long athletic wing types. The kevin durant and kawhi leonard. Lebron james's and excuse me. Jason tatum and jaylen brown falls into that. Maybe is not the same exact level of some of those. And i don't want it. I'm not even saying jaylen and jayson nor belong with the durant lebron tier but those kind of players determine a lot about postseason success. And if you've got a guy who is in that you know six seven six eight six nine range whose long who can handle who can shoot. Who can defend multiple positions who you can run offense through. I just think that's where the league is right. Now in the celtics have different levels of it but they have two of them. They have two of them. I as a broad outline..

"But you do need to do it in a way. That doesn't hamstring you. One quick note. It may not just be the timber wolves pick and maybe the warriors bad as as they've shown time so we'll see where this goes it may be too top five top eight top ten whatever in a strong draft and if weisman blossoms into a star still a little early for that the a good indication so far but yeah they may have that rare ability to pull off the smoothest transition from championship era dynasty era to the next era without having to bottom out in a major way or bottom out for too long like they they kinda did bottom out in terms of record this past year but weird circumstances with klay out and all that stuff but they might be able to thread that needle. It's really tough to do. And but you want curry therefore it if if at all possible the one thing i'll say just in supportive of your your framing which is like. Let him hit free agency. he'll be thirty four at that time right. And so how many teams even if the if the fear we're we're going to lose them for agency. How many teams are going to go. Max out of thirty four year old Especially a smaller guard who. They don't generally age as well probably. There's probably not a lot of risk there unless you know say it's charlotte. Who just wants to bring him home and like you know have plant a flag. You'll put up. Put a nice little know flagging their kappa. Whatever i don't think there's a lot of danger there. I guess the other danger though is more of are you. Are you doing a disservice as it insulting in some way to steph curry to say you know what we're waiting waiting for free agency. We we just have to see where we are in hand and how you look like. Is that the wrong way to treat a guy who's much the franchises at the wrong signal to send to other stars and their agents and their families because that is. There's a political reality to chris. You do have to factor in perceptions and just wanting to show that we're the kind of franchise that always takes care of its own. I get that. Although i would argue that writing checks the total forty five million dollars in that last season is thanks enough. I mean i mean you. And i know it's never that simple. It isn't right. It isn't worth watching. Good piece by michael pena check it out over at sl dot com It's up right now on the site. You decided it was time to upgrade your outdoor deck. "It's more about this chris. When he lands in philadelphia to play joel embiid or he lands in brooklyn to play with durant or when land miami to play with jimmy butler and bam out a bio wherever he ends up is he insists on still being a thirty five to thirty eight percent usage guy is still gonna want to dominate the ball and the offense the extent that he always has because if he gets somewhere else chris especially gets to one of his preferred destinations. It's going to mean pairing up with at least one. If not two other all stars and those guys are going wanna just sit around watching hardened beat the ball into the ground so the question i have is. What's he willing to do at this stage at thirty one having gotten all the individual accolades possible but not the ultimate prize. And i apologize to the celtics. Two thousand seven eight. Talk to ray allen for the story and it's about that sacrifice that ray allen paul pierce and chemical that made that enable the celtics to be better than the sum of their parts wanting to three hall of famers but if they don't play in concert with each other and each take a step back and serious steps back that they took then then you can't get there and james harden if he does land with multiple other stars somewhere that that's going to be the first question. How do you make it work. Yeah i think the counter i would make to. That is twofold one. It was a lifetime ago. I get that. But every time i talk to people in oklahoma city. I'm reminded of just how comfortable hardened was playing off of durant and westbrook again. It was a long time ago. And james harden was a complimentary player back. Then he's an mvp can't last now. What three four time nba scoring champion. So things have changed significantly but in that role. It's misleading for people to rewrite history. Not saying you do it but like some people rewrite history and say harden one out of oklahoma city because he wanted a bigger role he did got out of oklahoma city because they made the catastrophic of not maxing him out and thinking that you know salary cap ramifications were more important than signing james harden. If they had signed there may be the same things would have happened. Maybe would have wanted to be an alpha somewhere else but we don't know that to be true the other side of it is to that like everything you say is right. But i can't fathom by. James harden saying i want to go to brooklyn and i'm going to be the same.

"This relationships can subscribe for the best weekly nba content. These two are capable of. What does that mean could be. The best duo. I'll see how you can beat here. They are chris mannix and howard back medics back back. What up mr beck mannix our sir. So howard i know you wrote eloquently about your father in the new york times Just a couple of weeks back my question for you though looking back on your relationship with your dad. Did he ever tweet at your employer to fire you the reference. Of course marvin bagley. Who was the father of the coach bag. The father of marvin bagley player with the sacramento. Kings tweeting out that these sacrimento kings should trade marvin bagley. So did your dad ever do anything like that. No i'm not sure firing trading or this or quite the same. But i guess that's the only analogy we have No i will say this though. My dad was a twitter lurker and was not a prolific. Tweeter i think he just followed me and maybe you know some news organizations whatever and every so often he would hit me with something usually a tweet me so like i like i'd make some reference to something like a music like a song and he would like like make fun of me or whatever they mocked me on there so but the but nobody would have known that was even him so he did not cross the kind of boundaries that marvin bagley his father. Marvin bagley junior not to be confused with marvin bagley heard. I never put in that position. And i do not envy marvin bagley of the kings for what his father the position. He put him in there anymore. Kings story than that i mean. Could that happened to anyone. But sacramento i mean not only. Does marvin bagley tweet. Trade my son then you have. Darren fox his father saying trade him. Dad's getting involved on social media. Meanwhile luke walton sitting there would be like. Oh god this is starting already like. We can't give it like six weeks for us to collapse in the. I mean you think the the obvious solution is that bill walton needs to weigh in. Oh god i mean if we're gonna give fathers of flares sniping about the team at about each other possibly might as well have the coaches father who look bill. I would listen on any topic anyway..

"He was two or three years ago. I mean he's not making nearly as many impact. Defensive plays on a game to game basis now. Then he did back in the san antonio days not even close and it's because he has security this heavier burden on offense but he's not getting to the foul line ten times like he did against phoenix night. That's just not who he is as a player. And i think that you know. He's smart about how he manages the low but my question is he turn it back up when it matters in the playoffs and he didn't against denver. You look at two of those four losses against denver. They were both his fault right. And so i mean look. I expecting this to get worse by not necessarily better. I feel like his best. Years are probably behind him or if not he's right in the middle of them right now and it's just a huge contract to be carrying when you've already paid paul george it's gonna limit who you are as an organization. I'm not saying that. Their title window is closed. But i i would be goping. If i had to give that quite leonard deal and i wouldn't have said that you know when i signed him in two years ago i would've said well give him whatever he wants. But i don't think the last year and a half has played out very well for well. This is fascinating just because it kind of speaks to the dilemma organizations. Have they have a player. Who's so talented and in their prime but looking for that next contract mean. This goes back to The steph curry conversation at the very top of our episode a little bit But like you know your question of whether or not would be Or how long it could be really effective on. That contract is like yeah players. Who are in their mid. Thirties are probably not worth fifty million dollars. So it's just not what they productions not going to be there. Unless you're lebron james. So if kawhi leonard is lebron james then sure i feel great about it. He's probably not gonna look that way when he's thirty five years old but that's just like what it is. I in with everybody. So i don't really know what to do about that beyond offering him three years and hoping he doesn't get upset but he will so you got to offer the five and that's just what it is but i think a little higher on him in a little bit more optimistic about what he still has to offer and i don't see precipitous decline in his game As much as you do particularly on the defensive end where. I still think. He's an all defensive player us. Oh really yes so. That's basically kind of where i am with colossal..

"Trying to do and maybe better used as a number three guy to support players like yokich and jamal. Murray rather than trying to carry an offense himself. Do you think either team would would give the thumbs up to this deal. Michael and and who says no so like as much sense as this makes on paper i just don't see. Why either team actually does it. S thaddeus points out to make the money where you know. The nuggets would have to include significant salary. Because michael porter jr. only makes three point five million dollars. So that's gary harris and another player. So gary harrison paul millsap or will barton indra. Michael green Denver's just like not doing that like that's a lot of depth depth is really important for them and they are a thin and some cert- certain spots as it is For the raptors. You know pascal siakam even after we've just trashed him for nasa trash. We cry we. We're fairly criticized him for his poor play. So far is a standard play in the bubble but like the raptors take a significant step backwards and they full on are entering a rebuilt around michael porter. Jr. og an-and ob and fred vanfleet. I don't know what their path to title is Looking like that. And you know you're giving up one of the best defenders at his position for one of the worst defenders that size that. I think i've ever seen in michael porter jr. and without kyle lowry next year. Potentially he's a free agent this summer like they would just fall off a cliff and i don't like know messiah. Jerry is not under contract for a very long time. I could see him abandoning ship as well if were an actual trade that that went down because i just don't know what how you're going to reach the championship. And that's kind of what the expectations are for that organization right. Now you're are describing. Michael puerto juniors defense like your museum curators. You're like this is some of the worst defense that we've ever seen in the world. And yeah i here's the thing. If i was toronto. I would not do it because i personally don't amount of michael porter. Jr. believer i know. He's an incredible score. But if you're saying and he'd be like so good at scoring and so good at playmaking that he can make up for his defense in leader really efficient offense to you know big success. I say no and part of the problem is i. Don't really trust him as a playmaker. I think he's a guy who gets his own and doesn't necessarily set up his teammates very well. I don't see a ton of vision from him. And so if i'm trying to build an offense around him. I just don't think it's really going anywhere. People rightfully harp on the defensive. Stop because it's a disaster but it's the playmaking his teammates in making his teammates. Better stuff that. I actually questioned more. When you're talking about you know what is his feeling. What's his ceiling. Like as a player. Right i mean he. He's never going to be that multi-dimensional threat. I don't think it's going to be an incredible individual score. But those guys don't usually take you very far if i was denver. Michael i would do it because i would try to buy low on siaka. He's a natural third fit. He gives you a lot of what you need. You can take a lot of the pressure off of him from an offensive standpoint and you just hope the change of scenery it gets back to who he was near the contracts part does make it worse..

"Who were going to criticize later So i mean like you can criticize him. But just don't go overboard and then to the people who say's beyond reproach she's a human being and he should be criticized when he deserves it. Yeah i think that you know with this group. If clay was out there unhealthy. I would say they would. Face that playoff mandate if you've got claes replacement shooting six percent on three pointers and wiggins looking really clueless and you're starting a rookie center defensively and james out. Do they have a single plus defender on the entire roster that starts to be the kind of situation where clay's contract this time one hand behind your back. Kelly oubre as you know just presence is tying your other hand behind your back and at some point. It's like. I'm not going to hold it against steph if you can't carry this particular group into the playoffs usually i'm pretty demanding and You know i. I expect a lot from a team's best players that when it becomes time to hand out criticism i tend to look there first. You know janas. It started with him in the playoffs. You know he just did not play his best. The bucks go out. He has to bear a lot of the responsibility. Kawhi leonard same deal. You know for the the clippers last year's playoffs. That's where i wanted to start the conversation. A lot of other people wanted to talk about playoff p. Paul george and doc rivers and whatever else that might be. I think the best player always needs to have that kind of magnifying glass. Approach but with steph like he could be sensational. I mean i think the he could actually average forty points a game this season and they still don't reach the playoffs. I think that would be possible. Not predicting that. But i think that's possible given what he's got to work with on this particular roster so i think i'm in almost give him a full pass for the season mode At the same time it matters I guess his spirit and how he plays and is able to make an impact. Is he able to show you sort of glimmers of hope for the future right and i think part of the problem in the first two weeks was there hadn't been a lot of that even when he's scoring thirty something points. It just felt empty. You know the whole the whole experience was just dreary guys. Were having a hard time and and they just couldn't get their spirit right a lot of frustration in terms of shot selection from his teammates Express both by hurry..

NBA star Steph Curry on playing golf through the years

"Right stephane. Thanks so much for joining us. I want to start right away with background before. We came on start recording. You already give me bunch excuses about how you haven't been playing a lot so have feeling to know how this is going to go. But i i gotta know some back on. I think it is important. How you got into golf. How much you play grown-up all this started happening before we get into some of the events we've We've seen you play in no the The i've got all the disclaimers and qualifiers from our game got. Those one liners locked up. But i started plan back in By eight or nine my dad. He played six years in the nba. So it's kind of summertime. Hobby is normal kind of father son type of situation. You take me out drive a golf cart. He cut down a little putter. That i'd go hit with In that i started getting more and more Passionate about china learn how to play and by ten eleven playing full rounds them all play low high school golf for three years and then from there may have been bit by the bug ever since it is one of the things look forward during the most when. I'm outside of the court last similarities. To you know the the encore like ball competition what you experience in the in the league in how. I kind of transition that to china. Take everybody's money on the course so good. I was gonna say this from for later. But i want to understand what the gulf culture is like during the nba. Season right because you know guys season kind of your typically goes into june for you guys but you know releases into summer and you can play golf in the summer. How often are you playing during the season. Are you traveling with clubs. Do you need a certain time period on a road trip to be able to play on the road. Have the set course every city you go to. How's that work. All the above. I think the best way to explain it is I guess our team. We are in a little bit more freedom over the last five six seven years to be able to kind of even manipulate the schedule on road trips a little bit to bagan some golfing though so we'll probably play like twice a month during the season. Which is solid Mostly on the road coach. Kerr's amazing it. A go into a city will play. That night might have an early next morning but if we have an off day he'll give us a window to go play in the morning and then cash the plane to go to the next city and then we have the warrior golf team championship. Run a myself. Andrei igwe dollar klay thompson will play. We'd have some front office. Guys that will go out so we had to accrue whenever that wind opened up the group techs going. Hey time we plan where we're going so there's a. There's a golf culture for sure in. Our team is growing across the league. I think every year. I find like five ten guys that are either asking me about what club they should get or where they should get lessons. Or are asia coast cool which i'll bring in clubs on the plane type stuff so we get all those questions is by the by the year is pretty awesome to know. How much did you know that other people are enjoying the game. As much as i do because i think that was one thing especially for golf. Fans that stuck out about the last dance is how often jordan was like as soon as something was over a guy no no. We're going to go play golf. We're going to go play golf and be like a thing that is continually growing. I see andrea vall on twitter all the time. He's obviously you know a huge golf fan. But you know. I gotta be honest. I didn't really understand the depth of your game until you played in the ellie mae classic in two thousand seventeen. So what was you touched on high school golf but have you. Had you played in any golf tournaments since high school before you took on that challenge. Since high school tournament. We play the american century up. In lake tahoe. A play a maybe five or six summers out of out of the eight before i played nellie mae and that one is different experience. Because i think. If i'm on my game i should be like your top eight favorites a win even though haven't won it yet but when you get on alienate classic on the web dot com when it was a korn ferry now. I'm marie list. How far my game is from a professional that earns money is trying to carve out a career in this game. But i feel like i can hold my own so i had like this ghana irrational confidence in that respect but when i got not to the to the first day i i should say i did the practice round and all that really learning how they approach like the preparation for the week and a i'll put so much stress on like the practice rounds like trying to score and then i yo- you're gonna burn yourself out before that's thursday friday. That's not it. I learned that the first six holes. I was mad. I made a bogey or something like relax so it was. It was such a cool experience in five finals. Then play in front of nineteen thousand fans in crazy gentler russia's out in the court there is absolutely nothing to no way for me to really express how nervous i was on that i even had call him a name. I damn near blacked out on the on. The i just hoped i hit it got in the air it was. It was really kind of out of body experience so well. That's not your. It's not your sport sport. You go just go play. This is not your thing and you know you're doing it for a ton of eyeballs. Got to be that kind of feeling. One hundred percent and other thing that i learned which i don't think people appreciate washing these guys week after week after week is allies exhausted like mentally and physically Being in that mode for five hours straight like pre round during around post round. I get getting engulfed sheet. You know there's athletes out there but it's a different experience of staying locked in engaged in all the different ways that they approach kind of being on top of the game. It's is Is pretty awesome.

Kevin Durant's injury resurrects Warriors' old Stephen Curry, which could spell trouble for the Rockets

"It's Kevin Durant because we have chaos full money. We have chaos because the best player in the world is out for God knows how long after this non contact right calf injury late in the third quarter of game five it would all seem to be kind of a warriors nightmare except that in clay ended up combining for fifty two to beat the rockets five five so bow the question in front of us now is what does this all mean for Golden State? What does that mean? We have chaos, right? Came horrid on this hot that. You'll we have chaos. Do they have chaos? Do they have what for them would be considered to be a measure of normalcy? Right because for them. Kevin durant? Not being there is like a previous time where they had a bunch of other stuff that was going and that was going very well. It is looked like the successive. Kevin Durant is a measure of chaos within this team. And then the fourth border once he's out of there. Hey didn't seem to miss them. Steph curry is like I yes, it feels good to be back. In my comfortable chair. Well in times like this. I like to think of the completely hypothetical entity known as the Kevin Durant hive how do they process this game because we know they don't exist. But hypothetically, what would they feel if they heard Steph curry say what he said after this game last night if we can throw to that video for four or football, please. During the time out we all looked at each other. There are a couple of smiles in terms of like what that meant for us as a team in the guys ever going to step up in those moments on again next minute mentality. Draymond said that some point in that time out. And so this feels chaotic to me insofar as the warriors did a lot of work to get. Kevin durant? Feel really good about being the best player in the world. And now you have Steph curry talking, honestly, I believe about how his teammates felt inspired smilingly inspired by the opportunity to do exactly what they loved to do before. Katie was
