"But in that particular case, I was being very real. I mean, the easiest thing in the world to say, oh, I love stetson Bennett. I thought he was great last year, and he's going to be even better this year. Ball. The guy was America's best part of the mirror, Paul. I wouldn't bet against Tiger. Well, I would have, and so would you. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, Paul, you bet, yes. And you told the truth, you got nothing to be embarrassed about. So let me break it down to you, Georgia. Let me break it down real good to you. And times that you may understand, this is for red doo doo, mad lazy poodle, and all you, Georgia bulldogs. It's over. It's over. There's only one team. One freaking team. I asked the LSU tigers that get 14 or 15 players drafted in the NFL and come back the next year and win a national championship. It is the king, the Muhammad Ali college football, baby. It is the Alabama crimson tide. It's over. Enjoy it. It's done. We're moved on to another season. Now Paul, I'm pissed off, dude. I'm pissed off. You know why? No, why? Baseball season. I'm a Oreo fan. I don't opening day. I was already 20 games out of first place ball. I hate baseball. And I said, you know what? I'm just really, I'm not ready for this. No, I hate freaking baseball. It's not America's pastime. It's America's disgrace. Listen MLB and I'll never mention you again. Until everything has an eagle financial playing field, you are a frigging joke. You are not America's past time. You are America's disgrace. What's happening in Pittsburgh with the pirates and Baltimore with the Orioles, it is a disgrace to Jim Palmer and Roberto committees and I wish you would stay on strike forever. Now, Paul, let me say this. I just got word from the championship trophy of center. They built me a fine bomb championship trophy and I need your permission to put your head on top of my trophy. Can I have it? Legend, you have anything you want in the fine bomb show arsenal? Well, your head is going to be on top of my Chapman ship trophy, my 2022 fine bob championship trophy to find bomb head is going to be on top of a brother. I'd love it. And listen, they can only be won. Not 54. And I was just reading page 54, to lose no doubt, yes. And would you imagine a picture of the Miami hurricanes? Let me tell you something, KD, KB or whatever the hell your name is. You ought to be awake forest hater. You ought to be a Syracuse hater. You ought to be a Florida state hater. Everybody has warped your ass. I still remember Keith Jackson saying, Thomas has loose. Thomas is running down the sideline. Oh no. Like a boat of lightning. Two and three catches him. Takes the ball. Chelsea's face in the dirt that dynasty is destroyed. Damn right you hate me because I'm the king, dude. And you always hate the king. When you're a relevant child, like to you, I'll thank you so hard to you won't be cheering for the you. You'll be cheering for the oh. Legend out. The legend never failing to deliver. Eric is up next in Georgia. Hey, Paul. That's a fake red dog guy. Made a great argument as to why Georgia could win the national championship. If stenson Bennett is not the quarterback. Let's hear it. How did the four candidates, he's clearly the least talented. And I can't imagine that he's holding the job by the end of the season. I also agree with you, he made an egregious error coming back because if Georgia doesn't win, he's going to get the blame for it. And he will no longer be the darling of Athens, he'll be the foe that the reason why Georgia didn't win this year. You know, Eric, if you look at the history of mankind, there have been a number of people who have had masterpieces and continued on. Beethoven, da Vinci, Picasso, Michelangelo. I mean, you don't know, because it's not Beethoven, a lot of his works became more famous later in his life. Same for Bach, aimed for other great composers, great artists. What I'm trying to say is stetson Bennett knew he threw up a masterpiece that night in Indianapolis. There was nothing else he could do and he still came back, he's entitled to it. He earned it. Cliche, whatever you want to say. But all I said this morning was, and I'll continue to say it. I'm troubled by it. I don't want to see anything, unfortunate happened to his college experience. And you've you know what's behind him? Well, I think people are giving him too much way too much credit for why Georgia won last year. It was because of the cast around him. It's going to be like that again this year, but I can no way envision that Georgia repeats if he is the starting quarterback. Just no, well, you know, as the caller a few weeks ago, minutes ago who said he should be the Heisman. He should win the Heisman. He's got a good cast around him, but he needs more than a couple of good receivers. And I just don't think George will have that. Hey, thank you very much for the call. I appreciate it. We head to the break more of your phone calls right after this. You are listening to the Paul fine bomb show podcast. And.

"Receiver. I've heard some rumors of a high profile defensive lineman, maybe from the ACC interested in transferring in. Maybe another running back Kirby's not done yet. Caleb Williams at one time who committed to who signed today was reportedly looking pretty seriously at Georgia. What do you know about that? I think he was just leveraging USC for more money. Honestly, I don't think he ever intended on coming to Georgia. I think it was just a matter of leveraging USC. I mean, my goodness, he shocked himself. I mean, look, when I say this, I'm not talking down. This is the way it is now. This is free agency, Paul. These kids are going to do that if they're savvy enough, they're going to shop themselves around. They're going to raise up the price and then they're going to cash in and that's what Caleb Williams did at USC. I mean, I've heard talk of three, $4 million for this kid. I don't know what's true, what's not true? I can't foia it. It's not, you know, you're not able to get that information public at this time, but we're talking millions of dollars now the going rate for a transfer like a Caleb Williams, JT Daniels also in the portal. You know you're here in LSU, you're here in West Virginia. You're here in Notre-Dame, TCU, or you know, all over the map, and you wonder where will JT end up? Will there be an NIL deal? He's got a wait till after spring. He's got a graduate. He didn't get a release from Kirby. Kirby wanted to become back JT said no, seen this act before coach. I'm transferring out. And now we have to wait until JT graduates in the spring before he's eligible as a graduate transfer. So there's a lot of different rules. A lot of different moving parts and a lot of dominoes falling that are going to create the situations for these players to go to different schools. I don't want to come off naive here, but I'm just going just for the sake of the integrity of the game, which I say was a smile and a laugh. You take millions of dollars that he leveraged his ticket to SC for that kind of money, Mike, for those who were a little hard to hearing. Explaining how you do that. Well, I mean, there's NIL deals. Now, technically, schools can not set up and IL deals. The athletic, they can't be officially associated with this. But the booster clubs can. And we've seen it in Miami. I think they set up an LLC if I'm not mistaken. So right now, poets, it's almost a wild west gold rust race for schools to figure out the best vehicle to secure funding to pay players. And even as we speak, I was talking with George athletic director, Josh Brooks, and he said, look, I'd give you a comment, but the rules are changing so fast, man. You know, there's already things changing in the two weeks since I did an interview. So this is a really fluid situation. The NCAA trying to figure out how did they get their arms around these NIL dealings because what's going to happen is they're going to get undercut from outside sources from agents from other marketing groups. And suddenly, donors aren't going to be contributing to old state U, they're going to be contributing to what was once a slush fund, now called an NIL fund to secure players. So right now, everybody trying to create the perfect wheel and figure out how best to maximize the money to put these players into their schools. It's really a crazy time in collegiate athletics. And back to something you said a minute ago about stetson banner. I asked you the question because you can't assume anything right now with the Georgia quarterback room. So give us, first of all, stetson Bennett decision to come back, which surprised a few people. He had the Hollywood ending. So what happened? Why did he come back and where does all that stand? Well, first of all, you have to understand stats in Ben Paul. He's a little different than a lot of other kids out there. He doesn't necessarily want to cash. He doesn't want to be the Rudy of the SEC, okay? He's not ready to be the 30 for 30 or the Netflix special. He wants to play football. And he said after the game that he's playing football somewhere next year wasn't sure if it was going to be George or somewhere else, but stetson Bennett, by gosh, this guy wants to play ball. He knows that he could cash in right now and the story would be perfect. He'd go out on top and ride off into the sunset. And yes, there were people that wanted to push him down that road and get a younger, more talented person in there. But Bennett says, no, man, I've come this far, I've been a scrap, or I've been a fighter. I want to stick it out. I want to be in Georgia bulldog. I want to come back and you get the feeling that Kirby says. All right, man. No promises. You gotta compete just like anybody else. Carson back, year three, former state champion in the state of Florida. Don't forget. Rock band, grand 5 star, look for both trauma. Guess what's that? You gotta beat these guys out. Then it says, you know what? A beat him out before. I'm stuck around 6 years. He's gonna be 25 years old this season. He's ready to battle for that spot and we're gonna see what pad monkey does for one more year and then George is going all in on arch Manning. And that's where that story's going. And I realize we're not allowed to talk about recruits down the road, but we did see Kirby smart at the basketball game the other day..

"Man, I'm sure there'll be plenty of folks throughout Athens in the metropolitan Georgia area and maybe other hamlets in the SEC that would buy those things as fast as they got printed. But all right, was that a very frustrating game early on? It felt like Georgia just like wasn't doing what was necessary early on. It just felt like it was going to be one of those annoying games and then all of a sudden the miracle fumble with a guy recovering it that didn't even have an tenth of recovering it. And you're down and you're like, Jesus, this is just, it's done. It's going to be too much to overcome. They just can't get over the Bama hurdle mentally. And then stetson Bennett comes out, saves the day, leads to touchdown drives Todd monk and finally got his head out of his ass. And was aggressive, the ground game got rolling in the second half. That was something we discussed. I remember off the top of my head, everyone wanted to talk sets in Ben, but we're in that first matchup. Georgia's offensive line, which is supposed to be great. I think they have an average star rating of 0.944 along the offensive generated 1.9 yards of space in the opening in the SEC title game. And running backs broke a combined one tackle. And in the first half, that number was 1.1 yards of space before first contact running backs again had broken one tackle in the first half. And then in the second half, everything changed a little bit. So running backs were fantastic in the second half. Todd monk and open some things up on drives where he needed to and stetson Bennett delivered the mail. Yeah, you know what it felt like it felt like every game where we have an underdog that has 9000 chances in the first half to put the game away, allows the favorite to hang around and this time the shoe is on the other foot as Georgia hung on by the skin.

"How do you give an assessment of that? I would say for me, the most impressive unit was that Georgia secondary, the way that they were able to cover across the board because again, we came out of that SEC championship matchup saying that Alabama had exploited the one area of this juggernaut death star Georgia defense, one of the most talented historically statistically dominant units we've ever seen. Alabama decided we'll get the ball on the perimeter and we'll play away from Jordan Davis. We'll play away from the Kobe dean. And we'll try and get our yards there. And really from the middle of that second quarter on, Georgia's defensive secondary completely across the board locked down in coverage, gave the group up front time to start getting home more and start affecting Bryce young the way they had been trying to all game and to me that was the biggest difference from game one of this double header that we had with Alabama and Georgia to game two in the title. Yeah, so brace young is dealing with the mud hole. That has been stomped unto him. Stetson Bennett, on the other side here, on the other end here. I mean, when he finds 80 Mitchell for a 40 yard touchdown bike to put Georgia back on top, I mean, the stetson Bennett story. It seems it seems a little too on the nose, right? Like former walk on juco transfer 5 foot nothing. That kind of a deal, but it all felt tonight. Also, just phenomenally real. And I'm wondering what your evaluation of stetson Bennett was today. I took a look the fine folks at ESPN stats and info put together a plot chart of stetson Bennett's completions and incompletions during the course of the game. And it was basically about 24 dots within 5 yards of the line of scrimmage. No completions outside of the right hash mark literally the right side of the field shut off and then one glorious triumphant dot in the back in the back of that end zone where he had that 40 yard completion. Alabama in the last 30 games had given up two completions of 40 plus air yards. They gave up two in this game today. Stetson Bennett did exactly what he was in charge of inside this Georgia game plan. When we talk about the perfect game script, it is their defense leading the way, and it is him being able to hand the ball off to that backfield. Hand the ball off to zamir white. Hand the ball off to James cook. Let them go to work. And then just deliver on one or two big moments in that game to swing it. It was Kirby smart and Todd monkeys game plan executed to perfection and it was this quarterback back in his comfort zone away from all of the big gaudy record setting numbers for him in that SEC championship game and just being able to do his one 11th year. Yeah, when he was crying on the sideline, it occurred to me that he really did begin to look like Timothée Chalamet. And I was like, you know what? What a night. And by the way, speaking of call me by your name, I can't believe speaking up on the nose. I can't believe his name is actually stats invented. It is just so perfectly what a Georgia quarterback should be named, isn't it? It is, I don't know how college lacrosse let him get away. Stetson Bennett should be a two way midfielder at duke. And yet here he is completing what is a legitimate movie script. And yes, I know we have sort of warned that storyline out over time. I thought this was amazing as I looked at the stat sheet after. He's the first walk on quarterback to beat Nick Saban since Brian greasy, our colleague did it at Michigan in 1997. It is remarkable in all the ways that we want our sports to be. And he's had to hear about it this entire week. You know, all the lead up to it when we hear Nick Saban wax poetic about the yummy rat poison that we tend to feed these teams that are constantly looking for slight stetson Ben never had to go very far to find it. Everyone in the midst of looking at these two teams on paper when we started tracking 5 star rankings based on most composite rankings, these are the two most talented teams in the history of college football that have been assembled and in the midst of all of that, you had stetson Bennett the fourth who most people look at that and said, going up against another team with the Heisman Trophy winner on the sideline, he has to be the lone liability you consider and he managed to deliver when they needed him to and it's insane. So he delivers that 40 yard bomb to Mitchell, and in the drive after that, stetson Ben goes and delivers a 15 yard touchdown to Brock Bowers, and at this point, go Joe. It does feel like the O line. Just starts bullying Alabama, right? I mean, look, you played on the offensive line in Notre-Dame. You played in the trenches in the pros, so describe what it felt like for you to watch this Georgia team just run the ball over and over and over from that point on. It's the most uniquely satisfying feeling in the world. Like, especially in this day and age where we spend so much time debating the merits of running the football and these larger conversations that happen on the NFL level. But my favorite thing is when you hear defensive players or defensive coaches talk about stopping the run, it's so deeply personal because it is the most physically brutalizing part of all this. It is the most demoralizing on the other side that slows sinking feeling of knowing. It's all over and they're going to make you feel every bit of this. I knew Pablo when I saw it was about the 6 minute mark of the fourth quarter. And Georgia is really starting to lean on him and you go back and look and you see beautiful, large men wearing numbers in the mid 50s and the high 60s dive bombing over the top of these piles as they're pushing for the extra three or four yards. Once you saw the pile jumpers, I was like, these guys can finally smell it. They know it's here and they're going to take the one spot. Pile jumping Pablo might be the lone place where offensive lineman can really show off the joy of the position and it was on full display for the dogs. So for people who aren't familiar with the pile jumping phenomenon, gojo like, explain what it's like when big Justin shaffer, right? That's number 54. All 330 plus pounds of him is basically frog splashing onto the pile at one point on one of those drives, right? It seems like this is a I am feeling myself and you're now gonna feel all of me too. Pablo as big people were generally not good at talking smack. We're usually out of breath. We understand that if we say something, we're just going to go back and have to hit and now angrier defensive player for the rest of that game. But once you see them gassed here, and again, we don't look as good celebrating all the time. But when you take off and you see 300 plus pounds, take flight. I think it's one of the greatest photos. I hope that somewhere. Some Getty images reporter has this beautiful airborne shots that's going to grace the cover of some magazine article that bulldog stands hold up for the next 40 years as they celebrate this occasion. It was glorious. It was glorious, Mike, and it was like the kind of perfect thing. It was the icing. It was the man in the tuxedo, atop the wedding cake of this national championship game and this was again Georgia's first title since 1980 when they had Herschel Walker and incidentally, by the way, they happened to be to your Notre-Dame fighting Irish. I'm sure you have no memory of this at all. Of course, I'm sure you've never talked about this, never heard anybody in your family talk about this, but yes, Georgia beat Notre-Dame, the sugar bowl that year to do that. But at this stadium tonight at Lucas oil, what was the feeling from the fans afterwards? Was it was it just straight up euphoria? Was it, how would you describe the particular brew of emotional complexity that.

"People are wondering, fans are still wondering why. So how did Bennet run away with the job? Well, that's what everyone else wanted to know because Bennett was doing fine. He was doing well, but to a lot of people's mind, JD Daniels had done nothing to lose the job. And to a lot of people that includes me. He was 7 and O is Georgia starting quarterback. He played well when he was in there. But there were a couple things that I think figured into the reasoning of the coaches. One was that Georgia did not have the shutdown offensive line that they thought they might have. And also their receivers were really banged up. And so they thought, well, stetson Ben's mobility adds a dimension that we don't have with JT Daniels. So we're going to lean on that. And his passing ability is just good enough. But that was an answer that for many fans was never good enough. He has lost two Alabama twice. He has thrown 5 interceptions in those two games, and it's not ancient history. It was last month and the 2020 season. So it is fair for the last holdouts on stetson Bennett to say I need to see how he does in this game. I need to see him be Alabama in order to finally admit that the coaches had it right. What's the best workout program? The one that is custom built just for you. Most recently in the SEC championship game a month ago, which we had mentioned earlier. What went wrong for them in that game? What happened to Georgia? Several things, but the main thing is price young happened to them. Bryce young's a really good quarterback. Georgia's secondary is probably the weak link of the team. And they were exploited by Bryce young. Bryce young drops plenty of time airing it out. Man's there. Jamison Williams touchdown. 55 yards on a strike. And what we saw in the orange bowl doesn't convince anybody that it won't happen again because Michigan doesn't have the same level of quarterback or same level of passing. But the short of it was that their defense was just beaten by a really good quarterback and really good receivers. And their offense did not have the firepower to get them back in the game when they were down by two touchdowns. What adjustments do they need to make on defense? And is there a sense that they might have some answers this time around? I mean, you hate to start with an injury, but it's impossible to not mention that one of Alabama's top two receivers in that game, John mechie is out. He got hurt at the end of that game near the tail end of the game. And he won't be there. Now it always seems that Alabama's then just able to trot out somebody else who has blazing speed. So you don't know that that completely solves it. But I think the main thing for Georgia isn't going to be just play better in the secondary. The main thing is going to be pass rush because the other thing is Bryce young just had so much time to sit back there and pass. And that was against a Georgia team that has been so good at pressuring the quarterback all year and they weren't in that game. And I was sitting next to Aaron subtle's Alabama beat writer at the athletic and he was in shock at how well Alabama's offensive line was blocking. And they had not blocked that well all year. And by all accounts, that matchup of Alabama's O line versus Georgia's D line, front 7, including the linebackers, should have been a huge advantage for Georgia. Instead, it was the other way around. Maybe in the national championship game that reverses back to the way it should have been. If it doesn't come in another long night for the Georgia defense. Well, finally, Seth, all the turns in a story, all the hurdles he had to clear to become the starter and stayed the starter. What would it mean for stetson Bennett if he's able to help the bulldogs to conquer their demons and beat Alabama on Monday? He would dine out on it the rest of his life. The starting quarterback for Georgia in 1980 was buck below who he will tell you and he wasn't a senior. So he wasn't a finished product at that point, but he will tell you that the most important thing he did that year was hand off to Herschel Walker. But because he was the starting quarterback for George's last national championship, he's been able to parlay that into a lot of success in the latter part of his life in terms of radio and businesses and whatever. Stetson Bennett, God bless stetson Bennett story is just it's a 30 for 30. It's a movie. A 5 foot ten walk on. If you had told me as someone who covered that 2017 team. If you had told me that as we were writing these stories about stetson Bennett, mimicking Baker Mayfield, that one of the two would be a starter in a national championship game. It would not be banker bayfield. I would have said, are we all drunk? And yet, here we are and Vegas actually has Georgia as a slight favorite to win it. Wow. But as we said, the stetson beds story never goes the way you expect. So make no predictions about how this final game will go. Well, thank you so much for telling us this story, Seth, or I'm looking forward to seeing how this next chapter of the session Bennett story plays out. Thank you. You can read Seth Emerson's full story about stetson Bennett and follow his coverage of the Georgia bulldogs. At the athletic dot com. "For the future. That year, 2017, so stetson Ben is helping run the scout team. Stetson Bennett was the one they picked because of his mobility in the lead up to the rose bowl against Oklahoma to mimic Baker Mayfield. And like he had done on scout team all year, but then it really came to people's attention and lead up to the rose bowl. That's in Bennett just ran over the defense. He killed that first team defense like there would be times in practice that season and times in the rose bowl where the defensive coaches had to just stop and say, okay, you know, this kid's killing us. Like he's doing it maybe better than Baker Mayfield wood. And I distinctly remember interviewing George's defense of coordinator at the time Mel Tucker, who wasn't known as a very excitable guy. We asked him about stets and Ben and what he was doing against his defense. And his eyes just got wide, and he said, oh, that's a Bennett. Stefson Ben is a beast. Davin Bellamy, who was one of the starting linebackers on George's 2017 team told me that he thinks he and the other defensive players on that team like roquan Smith and whatnot pushed him out the door to transfer in a good way because they told him, hey, you need to go somewhere in play. You're not just some guy who's going to hold a clipboard here for a few years. You are good enough to play, maybe not here, because even at that point, I don't think even stents Bennett thought he would ever start at Georgia, much less go to national championship game, but they told him you need to go. And so he did. So as you wrote, he actually ended up leaving Georgia in transferring to Jones college, a junior college in Mississippi. What was that experience like for him? Jones college is a far cry from where he had been the previous year at Georgia with all the great facilities and big stadium in every pulls in. And he looks at the dorms and sees the stadium and where he's going to practice and where he's locker room is going to be and says, yeah, I'm in a new world. And it was humbling for him, but he also knew he was only going to be here for a year and have a chance to start, which is what he did. And stenson ended up throwing I think 12 interceptions that year, but his junior college coach told me they'd fought stetson was just trying to do a lot because he was trying to prove himself. He was trying to show people he could play. And you don't earn that next scholarship by just handing the ball off. He wanted to throw the ball a lot and make some plays. So his performance at Jones college led to a scholarship offer from Louisiana, but the story seems like it never really goes. It's supposed to. So nobody can you tell us what happened next? Yeah. That's a great way of summing it up. It never really goes the way it's supposed to. So he wakes up on early signing period day 2000 18 getting ready to sign with Louisiana and instead he had four missed calls from Kirby smart. Well, Justin Fields was transferring. They were going to go into the 2019 season with Jake fromm and nobody else with experience. They call him up and say, you come here for a scholarship instead of Bennett says, yeah, of course. He's always wanted to play at Georgia. It was a dream. And that probably would have been enough in some ways, but like you said, the stats in Ben's story never goes the way it's supposed to. So he spent the 2019 season backing up Jake from. And you wrote about a moment that year where stetson Bennett got completely thrown into the fire coming in for a play during the SEC championship game when from turned his ankle. Can you help us relive that? Yeah, he remembers that he's on the sideline and you're always supposed to be ready, but it is different and he finds out like they've signal over to him like, all right, you gotta go in Jake's got something wrong. And he just remembers it being a blur. Whatever I saw from him go down and just sprint it to my helmet. Picked it up. Giant shock of lightning was like, well, I'm about to go into this as a championship. When stetson Bennett goes in. Throws a pass and it is just wildly incomplete. 30 17, they might just play this close to the vest. I guess not. They're going to let him throw down the money. Over three lucky almost a disaster. And so whether based on that or anything else, everybody says, we can't have this. Yeah, he's a great story. He's a great fallback option, but we can never start him. So when Jake from turns pro after the 2019 season, they go get Jamie Newman, a graduate transfer from wake forest and they also go get JT Daniels out of the transfer portal, who had started at USC. And as the preseason begins in 2020, stetson Bennett is fourth on the depth chart behind Jamie Newman, JT Daniels and behind dewan Mathis. Well, one by one, they go to the side. JJ Daniels, not medically cleared, not ready to play. Coming off an ACL. Jamie Newman ops out. And Duane Mathis is elevated to the starting job. First game at Arkansas, he goes in and he just struggles wildly. And to everybody's shock, stetson Bennett goes in. Like, we didn't even know he was the number two quarterback at this point. That everyone's like, what's in Venice playing? What? He goes in. He leads them back to victory against Arkansas. Next week, even though JT dans is cleared, he's not ready to play, stents and Ben starts again, and they win against auburn. Then they go into Alabama and they lose. And they go up against Florida, and they lose again. And at that point, stetson Bennett, once again, loses his starting job. So after the 2020 season, it seemed like stetson Bennett had kind of missed his shot as he said. But as we said before, this is a guy who keeps defying the odds. So as we fast forward to this season, how did Bennett get another opportunity? So JT Daniels is the unquestioned starter. They beat Clemson in the opener, stetson Bennett does not play at all. Actually, people think he is now the number three quarterback that Carson Beck a redshirt freshman is the number two. In the lead up to game two, Kirby smart actually says that Carson Beck is the number two quarterback or we've been working him as the number two quarterback. But he essentially says that's embedded is in waiting in case we need him. He has a lot of banked reps. I think that was on a Tuesday. As it turns out, stetson was starting, because JT Daniels had played through an oblique injury against Clemson, but their next opponent was going to be UAB. So they were going to rest JT Daniels. Stetson Bennett becomes a starter. Georgia fans, many of them do not like that at all. They wanted Carson back to play. They have seen enough of stetson Bennett, they saw enough of him in 2020. They wish he had transferred again and gotten out of their lives, but their he comes out against UAB and touchdown, touchdown, touchdown. Taking a shot again Bennett slings it wide open catch by Smith room service touchdown. Explosive play. That's straight dynamite. 61 yards. You know, I shut everybody up performance, but it was only UAB. JJ Daniels gets healthy again, starts the next two games. And then lo and behold, he comes up with another injury. He has a LAT muscle injury. And this time, everyone understands stetson Ben it's going to go back in there. And it's just supposed to be a couple games until JT Daniels gets healthy. Late October game against Florida, big showdown game. That's when JT Daniel is probably will come back. Stetson Bennett plays so well that he keeps starting. But.

"Instead do no wrong. Today, the athletic Seth Emerson tells the story of Bennett's unlikely journey from walk on to junior college to QB one for Georgia. If you had told me that as we were writing these stories about stetson Bennett mimicking Baker Mayfield, that one of the two would be a starter in a national championship game. And it would not be banker Mayfield. I would have said are we all drunk? And whether Bennett and the bulldogs can break a long drought against Alabama when it matters most. From wondering in the athletic, I'm Tiffany osinski. It's Tuesday, January 4th, and this is the lead. So Seth, a New Year's Eve, it was Georgia defeating Michigan in the orange bowl to earn their spot in the national championship game. So for anyone who missed it, what was working for the bulldogs against the wolverines? Everything. Whereas everything seemed to go wrong against Alabama. And you have to remember like Georgia was a complete team during the season. Their defense got the most notoriety. People saying it was the best defense in college football, potentially ever. But the offense was pretty good too. The offense was putting up a lot of points that just got overshadowed by the defense. Against Michigan, everything went right. And it started actually with the offense. Michigan wins the toss and defers, meaning they'll kick off. Will the firm, you're getting the football, which direction do you want a kid? That's embedded in Georgia, get the ball first, and they go down in sport. Scores in Georgia draws first block. Then Michigan comes down, gets stopped around the 40 minute gets the ball back and go down and score. Mcintosh is going to throw it to the end zone. Touchdown Mitchell. Georgia trickery to possessions two scores. Before you know it at the end of the half, it was 27 to three. And I think the other thing was that they were a Pis off team. I can say pissed off. Yes. Ticked off. We can edit it in the process. But they were a pissed off bunch of players because everything that happened against Alabama had caused everyone to question them. So the Georgia got exposed. Defense was never that good. Stetson Bennett, he's the bomb we all thought he was. And Georgia did everything they did in the regular season against a weak schedule. There's an overrated schedule. Well, so much for that. George had minimum now has proven they are one of the two best teams in the country because they blew out the team that was the number two seed. But now the question is whether they can be number one at the end. Well, that's Bennett, definitely did not look like Obama against Michigan. He threw four 313 yards in three touchdowns. But it's sort of easy to forget that he's had a wild college journey just to get here. And he commented on that a little bit in the postgame press conference. Yeah, it's been a long journey, you know, and me just like every play in this room or on our team we love the university of Georgia. And we wear the G with pride. He is the words long journey there. And that might be kind of understating it. So we wanted to spend a little time looking at that journey. And to do that, let's first go all the way back to signing day in 2017. What was the story on Bennett coming out of high school? There isn't too much of a story for him on signing day because he did not sign a scholarship with Georgia. He had offers from some small schools, but he was small. He is from a small town, black sheer, Georgia. So combined small high school and not being as tall. He didn't get as many offers, but the thing about him when you go back in his life and you go back into high school or wherever you keep finding players who go on to great success or who were bigger name players who went against him who always say this kid's good. Richard lecount and Nicole Hardman were two 5 star recruits to Georgia. Who played with Bennett, at Georgia, but played against him in high school, and they always said, he can play. I don't care that he's 5 foot ten or hasn't played. He just, he could play. And Georgia saw enough in him to convince him to come to Georgia as a walk on. And he came in the same class as Jake fromm who ended up taking Georgia to the national championship game as a true freshman that year 2017. But stetson Bennett, he already at that point had the nickname mailman because he wore a postal hat to a recruiting camp. And people thought it was cool like, oh, here's this 5 foot ten kid named stetson Bennett the fourth, but really, at that point, it's just a nice story. He's just a nice walk on and Jake fromm is the one who leads them to the championship instead some Bennett is way.

"There and let him give a shot. I mean, we've lost Alabama two times with the same quarterback, you know? And you've got Alabama. Hey, that was all I was trying to say to our last caller. I'm not saying that the 5 straight positions had anything to do with stetson Bennett but he is responsible for a lot of what didn't go right. And in the second half, Alabama had that quick touchdown, Georgia four three straight punch, but stetson screwed it up because he threw two interceptions. Exactly. So and then when we went four tonight, we should have took the points, but we've got to give JT a shot. That is unfair to that kid. He's got a big arm. And you know he's but red dog. Why? At that point in the game, didn't he come in? That's all I'm asking. I have no anything else. I have no idea. I have no idea why they did. But this is where Kirby's art has opened himself up to past criticism. Justin Fields and everything. Of course, I agree a 100%. You know? Simon did it against us with tua. So, I mean, you've got to be willing to make that change in the middle of the game. I mean, one Alabama national championship when he took out Jalen hurts and put two in. So, you know, hopefully it's different next time. So, but go dogs. I'm still a fan to see Paul. Yeah, anyway. And by the way, many, many people were wrong, including myself. I'm not yelling at Georgia fans because they were wrong. I'm just trying to understand from them about all the things that they said, denigrating Alabama, all the things that they said in relation to where we would be today. That's all. That's all I am trying to say. And answering my question is Shannon did about stepson Bennett by telling me how great Bryce young wise really doesn't tell me anything I didn't already know. Clearly something is going on. There were plenty of opportunities in that third and fourth quarter for Kirby smart to put JT Daniels in. Why didn't he as what I'm asking you? Yeah, the defense played a big role. And obviously Kirby was counting on his defense to do what it had done in 12 previous games. And they didn't. But that still doesn't answer the conundrum on the offensive side. Let's take a break. We have a lot to do. We're only an hour in, even though it feels like we've been here for a couple of days. "Still talk about what is the quarterback situation look like every week we have these questions about JT Daniels is he rehabbing is he getting better? Meanwhile, stetson Bennett has quietly led this team to 6 O and has looked dang good while doing it. So I'm interested to get some of that insight from DJ shockley as we are ahead of a big Georgia Kentucky matchup. We've been high on Kentucky on this show. What are you thinking? How are you feeling ahead of this? I love what Kentucky is doing. But, you know, I feel like this is probably their biggest test. I thought the Florida game, but that game was at home. So this is going to be huge playing in Athens. I think that's really big, but Kentucky, I feel like they're riding a high right now. They've got a wave of momentum. But we saw what Georgia did to Arkansas wave of momentum. And we've seen what Georgia does to everybody's wave of momentum. So kind of with Kentucky, but we'll see what happens. It's going to be a tough matchup for Kentucky certainly coming in as for sure the underdog. And it makes sense against this Georgia team. One other thing about this weekend and we're going to talk about this on out of pocket tonight. It's the first full weekend of all SEC games. So we're going to play a little squid games type red light green light. I'm not sure Paul finebaum has watched squid game yet, but maybe we'll be surprised some upset alerts potentially because I think there are some teams that you think could potentially pull an upset this weekend. Yeah, maybe I was a little on the edge of something. I'm not going to give it away. You see, you just have to watch, but you know to pivot off of that. What game are you the most excited about this weekend? Oh man, I think out of everything Georgia Kentucky's the easiest answer, right? Because that one is so electric certainly in the SEC east, but also all miss Tennessee. You got lame, going back to Knoxville, and I know you're extra excited about that. Oh, I'm so excited. It's lane kiffin's return. I remember Lanka and being there. That's when I really started to become a Tennessee fan. It was when I was an early years of high school. Those were those same years. And so I remember Tennessee football when he was there. I think Tennessee is moving and grooving their offenses explosive. They've got pieces returning..

No word whether he has tested positive orders. Contact tracing of a Stanford starting quarterback will not play when they host Oregon tonight. And the Pac 12 has been affected by covert 19 with two games already canceled before the start of the season. Tough news for coach on Stanford. I know they were really looking forward to that exposure tonight. That's tough. But the Pac 12 has been hit hard by early, really just trying to get back out in the field, and it's already disrupting that conference and Unfortunately this another Georgia player coming off We mentioned Kendall Milton down on that last play. He's got two trainers that are helping him off the field. He still seems to look look like he's putting a little bit of weight. But they were definitely examining that left me and it looks like that was where the tackle happened. He tried to plant off of it, and you just never know if it got twisted up a little bit in the ground. You hate to see that that is just one of the most highly recruited players in the whole country last year from Northern county for Central California, Fresno, and Milton being helped off he did get the first down. The new line is 22 of the Gators. Georgia trying to rally now. Pulled Stetson Bennett Dewan Mathis is in at quarterback. Dr has moved all the way down to the University of Florida 22 yard line. Lodge trail. 41 21 mishandled, snapping Mathis right in the hands of he was backing up when he falls on it recovers it. Be a third longer plays are so frustrating not only for the coaches but for the entire team because again, that's a perfect snap that I want Mathis just kind of takes his attention off of the football and he just has a property. It's his fingertips and goes to the ground. We saw one earlier with Stetson Bennett that resulted in the ball just going down to the turf jumping on top. Just a wasted down. It's just a wasted play. It's actually a loss. 26 yard line, turning clock under one minute to go in the third. This will be a 3rd and 14 from the 26 for Mathis was in the middle of a field trips to the left one receiver to the right now against the Florida defense there back in the zone. Mathis in the pocket steps up, lets it go on. It's intercepted, Or is it for a touchdown? Yes, it's a 26 yard touchdown. Pass the Jackson right in the middle of the zone. And that makes it 41 27. Georgia had not had very much success today on third downs when it was eight yards or longer there before going into that place right there, but the protection up front for Diwan Mathis was very good by the offensive line. Give you enough time to find Kira Jackson come across the middle of the field late. Puts the ball right in front of one of the defense of players falls down for Florida as Jackson falls into the zone. Extra point in the air is good. And the freshman quarterback hooks up with Jackson for the touchdown. And our new score is the Gators 41 the Bulldogs 28. So give Mathis Jackson some credit for making the big play..

But offensively, boy a lot of question marks right now for this Georgia football team on how we get this offense. Moving forward in a better direction before we go there. I also want to give credit not only to coach smart on the recruiting trail, but 23 guys who did a lot of Yeoman's work there in the second half, especially Devante Wyatt. Malik carrying a tray von Walker all paying playing extra duty. And when you have a team like Kentucky that ran off how much time today Ze I can't see your water bottles on the way, 35 minutes in time of possession. 19 minutes in the first half alone. Let's first start with Stetson Bennett and how steps and performed In your opinion, starts at nine out of nine out of 3931 Yards, had the two interceptions. Um, you know, I honestly thought it was carry over from the second half of the Alabama game, looked a little bit unsure on where to go with the football. At times the vast majority I think maybe outside of two throws downfield to wheel routes, one to a running back. James Cook, the other one to Darnell Washington, a tight in that A little delayed release that that got out on the wheel route. Outside. Of those two throws. Everything was sidelined to sideline lot of bubble screens, a lot of the few different screens or swing passes. Outside of that we didn't push the foot ball down the field vertically. It all had the the one interception, obviously, on one that we did try to throw down where Stetson was was late. The other pick was ah tipped ball again and that I got picked up really a fine play by the Kentucky defensive lineman. We didn't need to run the football today, which you know, I I passed the football past the football today because we're running the football so well so little bit more difficult to get into a rhythm. But what I really felt that it was just carry over from last week in Alabama, where, you know, maybe he's lost a little bit.

"In the college Football playoff title game in overtime, Remember tour Montevallo as a freshman, threw the game winner Freshman Damonte Smith now the tide on first down hands, Dona Gee, Harris and Harris down in Georgia 35 o'clock will roll with 13 40 to go in the fourth quarter. Still a long way to go. It's 34 24 back to back turnovers. Stetson Bennett the tight end or I'm sorry the quarterback for Georgia as he threw a second interception, trying to find a tight end or somebody over the middle that has really given out of that chance. Put some serious distance between them and the dogs. Here on this drive. Two receivers right one left hand moving right in his fourth quarter. Georgia shifts a foreman in front hand analogy here is here is now bounces back left and only God's a yard or two. Let me finish up something I said the third quarter because it's worth it. ESPN was showing this family dealing with theatrics. Cancer. The berry family they regularly Braxton, Barry's favorite players. That Guy Naji here is and Harris and Nick saving both called him to encourage him last week. On the phone as he's got an inoperable brain tumor and then Naji here, went out and exploded for 200 yards and five touchdowns in the old twin has got the ball again on a pitch running left. He's at the 30 down to about 28. That is a first down and the Berry family is here to be at the game way Wish Little eight year old Braxton bury the best. "You've got to start to. Regardless, If he comes back in, they lose eventually down the line, and they for some reason they lose to Georgia if he's not coaching the sideline. No no team has ever been in the college football playoff with two lost, correct, So like I understand is the eye test. I think it's a different year, all of those sort of things there. You are true, but his two losses You can't put a two lost team into the final Four. You just can't do it. Also think about there will be a saving factor on the field because George's head coach, Kirby Smart, he learned everything about recruiting machines about schemes. Georgia's defense. George's head coach was Alabama's defensive coordinator. Savings of defensive guys. So even though seven won't be on the field likely on Saturday, or maybe even in the stadium, there will be a strong sieben influence. But it's ironic it'll be on the Georgia sideline, not Alabama's. Yeah, but It's not going to. I think when you look at the Georgia situation, first of all, they need to figure out the quarterback right three right now, including your USC transfer, J. T. Daniel's young kid Gwan, Mathis and Stetson Bennett, the fourth who's taken a majority of the city with the most SEC name of all time he needs to remain. Georges called. Itjust doesn't even look like a Georgia but small, a smaller I think when you when you look at it, though, this football game if he's not, if if, for some reason Nick Saving can't coach it. Steve Sarkisian and has a lot to prove. And if Steve's Archies he could be Georgia Watch out. Then he's going to be on top of the head. Coaches watch out what you had opportunity this year interview for Mississippi State, turn it down in the interview for Colorado and pulled his name out of that one at the last minute, And he's 46 35 in Washington and USC is also spent two stints as Alabama's offensive coordinator. So he's the guy.
