"We've talked about manatees on the show before manner. Teach me something. Robert Well manatees are of course, marine mammals, and they are syringes They have a few living. Ken that will get to Oh Serena so are they named after the siren exactly yeah, tied into the whole You Know Mistaking Manatees for Mermaid thing now their closest living relatives are the elephants, and they're kind of like the elephants of the sea in some respects you know drifting through the waters feasting on vegetation. There are three extent varieties of manatees. There's the Amazonian manatee the west Indian manatee in the. The West African manatee, and all of them have marching molars much like the elephants Oh. Okay, but then I was reading around a little bit. This about this and there's a there's another variety of serene ian that went extinct in the eighteen hundreds, and this was steller sea cow. Now it apparently This was a a a syringe that already had a rather narrow habitat. It was already like you could make the argument. I think that it was already kind of endangered before human activity. Really put the nail in the casket here, but it actually didn't have true teeth. It had instead what has been described as broad horny pads that it used to shoot the soft parts of Kelp which made up most of its diet. And this leads us to the other existing Syringes Ian, and that's the eastern hemisphere him as fears Dugong, which looks very similar to a manatee, but is that it has a shorter snout which kind of often see it in pictures. It looks like a vacuum cleaner, because as essentially what it is, it's clean, it's it's eating off the bottom. And it also has a flute detail that looks much like a whale. But then you really have to think about its teeth, so it has no marching molars. It does not have the marching molars of a manatee. They also have incisors which essentially little tusks. Which manatees are lacking? But the thing about dugongs is that they also have horny pads in their mouths for chewing, and there are more important than their actual teeth. The cheek teeth are almost a non functioning, and and not very tough to begin with so as reading a few different papers about them from J. M..

"Even though they did cut redwoods to make boats in housing they weren't going nuts by desecrating entire forests. No intrigue would make Entree Booth for sure. That goes a long way. And you're using it for necessity like what you what you need. And nothing more but they also had serious respect for these trees all the while like a tribal elder from the local Chai Lula tribe many reeves. She was quoted in nineteen seventy six as saying her people are people from within the Redwood Tree. So there's clearly a deep spiritual connection there and she went on to add a pretty blunt warning saying destroy. These trees destroy the creators love. And if you destroy that which the crater left so much you'll eventually destroy mankind heavy. Yeah definitely needs to be said. Yeah because according to the statement mankind was really just a couple of hundred thousand acres from being destroyed by the Creator. Really pushed to the brink. And that's because massive trees like these eventually caught the attention of lumbermen who basically started using these vast forest as giant. Atm So greedy. It was a salvation effort after gold miners initially flocked to the area but failed to strike it rich that way so they figured they would turn to what they saw the next best thing which was logging the abundant redwoods and considering there were major metropolitan areas developing nearby like San Francisco. There was huge demand for large. Would like this lugging continued for several decades until the nineteen twenties and that's in conservation started to step in This is when the save. The redwoods league created this batch of three state parks which was able to stop the rampant logging. What a great name to save the redwoods league because I'm a vendors or something like tree hugging adventures in. Yeah I I got and since the National Park destination requires so much more red tape in federal finagling not to mention that World War Two was keeping the government pretty busy redwood. National Park. Didn't finally become a thing until nineteen sixty eight and then together this quartet of jointly administered parks which I'm going to go ahead and call the fantastic four of parks. Yes they protect what's left of the coastal redwoods although terrifyingly by this point almost ninety percent of these trees had been logged. It seems sad to see so. Many people didn't see the beauty and the porn forest. They only saw dollar signs. And it's not even just the trees themselves. The forest they comprise are hugely important and protect threatened. Wildlife Steller Sea Lions Chinook Salmon in northern spotted. Owls altogether these ecosystems are so unique geologically important that this part of California was classified as a world heritage site in nineteen eighty in an international biosphere reserve in eighteen eighty three. It's always nice to see a happy ending and when we come back we're going to talk about a road trip to redwood national and state.

"Medicine really really having to be in peak shape brearley be on your toes and entering into into sometimes pretty hairy critical situations and just you know by your own canning and experience to have a sense of how to proceed with someone with you. Even who doesn't maybe have that experience or capability and and essentially to be teaching them how to navigate or how does how does arrive. It sounds like there's this inherent drive that you have to go pursue the bigger the bigger way more challenging surf. What is that about you know surfing? That's Dr with put it a little differently the <hes> for whatever reason most of my life I've been kind of a renegade or Kennedy explorer you know I love exploration Asian adventure. I like going into the Wilderness. I Love The unknown and in surfing at least the big days approach is that the most exciting for me is exploring elsewhere in the world for new Sir spots especially big wave spots and to sort of pull that off for all the research and time. It's almost like these cases. I do these medical cases. I mean these are deep. Research search cases to sort of figure out if if nothing else just how to get to these places me the ultimate the sublime is go find yourself hundred miles from any living person city that the peak on some spot that's never been before and it's a really challenging big way. That's going to be tougher and tougher these days. Yeah not really is it because Big Wave Surfing is still challenging aging enough or uncommon to keep it out of the grasp of a lot of the masses of other surfers. I think what happened was the proliferation in of Organized Surf Tours Surf Camps and has made people think that that's about all the possible there's thousands and thousands of miles of bunnies floor coastline. I've been sort of doing this research and going to these places again and again and again and doing expirations this point on up close to about two hundred for serfs. We've found found spots. You know we're talking wilderness. I'd be I you know so in that and also surfers do talk if you're in the the game as it were you know and so if you're looking for Surf Surf in these remote regions you know it takes that's so funny to think of how these people think well we all you need is Google Earth you know and and somehow this is wild silicon valley propagated sort of dream. You know that from you just from Your Own Sofa that you can serve explore the world. The hard part is to say okay now. I'm going to spend my own money and I'm not going to sit there and somehow believe that this isn't going to be possible unless I have a sponsor and these poor people say I need sponsor. You know so I can go. Isn't it nice though that those people who are on the couch looking at Google maps does not help put you at eased that those people won't be chasing down your you know spots in a given area because they feel a sense of certainty that there's nothing nothing there find no truth be told I. I don't want these places just for myself. I loved it more people would enjoy them. I'd love again this coming from the perspective of being a physician dealing with people with white thirty illness. You know my obligation to honor them is too. If if you're healthy nothing well enough to really get out there and live. Do these things you know last September. There's this reef I had my <music> is on up in the Gulf of Alaska about fifty miles from land anywhere but I I seen the chart on this reef and I knew I knew for years. It was another mavericks I kept trying to get out there and it was really hard to get a boat and it was too far to really fly and this and that so finally a friend with about and we went out there this last September and it was really really sunny windless day normally that part of Alaska you get a lot of weather and that's often the reason you can't go out to places like this so finally we get out there and the re-focus doesn't come out of the water but a couple of little kind of like Cortes Bank set up with a couple of rocks that come out of the water talk but otherwise most of it is eight fathom eight feet deep some of that and pull up see this said coming about double overhead classy pitches from the center of the peak. Oh my God and then we saw it looks like someone take off on the wave. We go what the fuck and there's not a boat anywhere near ears. There's no there's not another living person within fifty miles and we watched as the surfer just makes the drought pulls up sort into the face goes for two hundred yards and pulls out on us they pull out your seat going over the back the fins and it was just a Steller steller sea lion probably a thousand pounds and one of about thirty steller sea lions out there and these this is their spot yeah we went out and served it at some point. They told us it's their respond. They chased us off the Oh really. It was here Paul Yeah but that's that's. That's the memo that these places are out there and meant to be I think I don't know explored to the extent that you're comfortable. You don't have to full to be a little ways but this is where we cut our conversation there because docs family had had just arrived home and I didn't want to keep them any longer so a big. He's going to show up at the BSO headquarters and make the announcement that he is removing Scott Israel as the sheriff of Broward County and replacing him with a former Coral Springs sergeant Gregory Tony this is a huge story. I mean, this is huge and everybody the first person. I thought of again was Andy Pollick is been counting calling for fixing it and accountability in Broward. Well, we will be champion champion this. Yeah. Remember when he was our guest the other day was saying, you know, what we want them all gone. I just want to clean out. Get rid of these people start new we gotta get rid of the bad blood in. He was he mentioned Israel's name again Runcie was another one the superintendent of Broward in any was the one that told us that a lot of the superintendents people have left without I never saw that reported leaving on their own. Yeah. And there was another officer who left with BSO on his own as well. And you told us about was like, oh, okay. Didn't know about it. But I as head of, you know, a lot of people will say, well, you can't blame the sheriff for what happened at parkland. Yeah, they're here's people you get a blame somebody if it were a private company and somebody at the bottom made a horrific mistake like that who's always to blame the head of the company, of course. So why would you not blame the sheriff in this case? The meantime, again, just to repeat again and seven thirty five. Stuart Kaplan is going to be on gives the real deal on what his client is going to go through next. I'm sure they're gonna fight. I would think just like Brenda Snipes. Yeah. I'm sure we shall see. What happens? How about the feel good story of the year? So far good story of the day. I didn't expect this to even happen will be completely honest with you because this girl has been missing since October and her parents were well, we're assuming at this point murdered in front of her because it happened in Wisconsin. It's thirteen year old Jamie Kloss is her name her parents were killed in their home in Wisconsin. As you mentioned in October. She ended up disappearing they've been looking finding they remember they they scoured fields and streams and lakes and ponds and for months and months, and then they were trying to figure out what she and fathered their parents murder was she kidnapped well last night about eighty miles north of where she was taken from. She approached a woman walking a dog and said, I'm Jamie class. Please help me and the woman went to her neighbor's house knocked on the door and the neighbor opened the door and there's lady and she says this is Jamie, close call nine one one. So after how many months six months left over November four months close enough this thirteen-year-old, they found her safe. She was apparently malnourished. She looked shoveled. She was dirty, but still she's alive. So her family's like out of control is just just unbelievable for them. They always think about the family, I have hope through just bad news after bad news. This is her aunt wasn't the spirit. This is lady as I. Figured if they hadn't founder by now that the person that did this didn't want her dead. So I had hoped everyday everyday, there was hope Dowd be tough. Holy cow would be tough to stay strong throughout that. Or isn't. It is she she doesn't make a good point if they hadn't found the body already. She can only hope that she was still alive. Yeah. I mean, Elizabeth smart wiscon- for what nine months, wow. Wow. Same situation g sets of all the huge news happening today. It's the greatest news in the world. Yeah. It is the greatest is. And that press conference later on today is going to be fascinating to get more details what they know and they arrested Wisconsin. I don't know who it was troopers or local police or the police from the city. She was founded are they arrested a suspect almost immediately. So hopefully, this creep. And did he or is it a he is it is she or did they is it a couple who knows? Did they kill Jamie classes parents in for why see that's the that's the horrific thing is already lost. It's been. Yeah. So yeah, gentlemen is this person is charged with taking a shotgun shooting. All the Steelers lions sea lions at is. All right. It's seven thirty seven now. Stephen head into ten in sports this morning talking about the shocker women basketball team kind of the opposite of what happened with the man sounded like shocker Wimmer's playing really well last night, the the hitting on all cylinders. Yeah. And came out of the gates. Well, got a season opening win. It could be that, you know, the probably impact of the the presence of the public address announcer there last night is what boosted those young women to do their best. Course we're talking about. Ted would me. Well, I certainly did my part I tried. How is it fun to do? You know, the last time I did public address announcing was when I was eight years old and my dad, let me do some probably announcing the softball game in Kingman, Kansas. They got hooked on radio. But. I didn't pursue my PA announcing career now you have done very well. I'm doing it. I've been doing a announcing for more than thirty years. What's the secret? What's the key to doing it? Right. Making sure you've got all your nose, ready and ready to go, right? Got to have a nice roster. Nice accurate roster in front of you have good diction because you never know how good or bad the microphone system will be anywhere. Don't kidding. We've seen that we now. And then the prep. I would think one of the things is finding out if there are some tricky names get from just get the pronunciation. That's about it and ready to go tension fun things. Like, the t shirt toss or anything. Sure. Got to do all that. Okay. All the inbetween stuff. They charge you to go into the game. Then or do you get your own ticket? I do get I do have a pass to get in. Must be fun. I mean, well, yeah, I hope it is. But I've been doing if you've been doing it. And of course, our buddy, Don hall at channels. The men's games game for cash. He's been doing that for I believe at least thirty-five years. Wow. Okay. I guess he's got the franchise. Hell, yes. Okay. You've been doing it for a long time. Well, it so long in fact that I can barely remember him. Not doing it. Yeah. Who was before? We don't know. I had a little experience last night. The first basketball game of the year for my granddaughter's. I've got the twins Marian Jocelyn arch. Well, they go to Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton school and that sixth grade basketball team bureaus team they've been together a couple of years, these aiders so girls nine and last night. They were they were awesome. They really clobbered the the opponents. Pretty badly in the granddaughters. I thought that especially the two things at my granddaughter's do that are kind of interesting they played rugged defense. I mean, they're out there to block shots. They don't. That's good. Mary. Get him time. Mary was a tiger on defense last night. But the the two of them though, between them I could only stay for a little after the first half. They're not bashful about shooting this year. Coach coach Kevin Miller has got him to wear. You know, if you're open, go ahead and fire. Let's go. Yeah. That's the mentality today. Man. That's what they're not somebody gonna pass. But they they weren't bashful last night. They were cranking them up. Hey, we're not hitting any of the shots. But they were they were they were factoring throwing the utilize. Those shots will go down. Throwing the you will watch the barn into actually I did see Jocelyn put one in before. I went home. Nice. And she was she was ecstatic are you gonna wipe the grin off. It's always fun to make make a hoop. He's probably still smiling tonight. It reminded me when when I was over at Wichita west playing softball basketball in the coach at that time was a guy named Bannister. I can't even remember dick Bannister was his name real character. And he didn't think I was pretty unselfish. I'm point guard. I'm MAC, you gotta you gotta shoot down in what you know. I'm not that good coach he says, well, you know, if you throw enough US, you know, what? Steph at the barn. Stick became my philosophy. Hey. Score of you, don't shoe. That's right fun to watch the girls last night. They've come a long way in just a couple of years. Nice doing some good things coach Miller and they're actually to coach Kevin and his dad Steve. And you don't Miller's. If you would know if I you out there in radio land, do you may not go back this far. I mentioned the name Jack Miller who would you think? What would you think of that legendary Wichita sports cast cake, TV sports? Right. Well, Steve is his brother and Kevin's his grandson. So so the kids are playing the girls who played for the great grit with the great great granddaughter of Jack Miller, and it's a it's a family deal out there. Anyway, we're proud of him and great to see your grandkids. Do something. Good, right. Very nice. All right. All right, guys, seven forty two. "Like when I was a kid, my bedroom was painted completely as if I was underwater with dolphins on the wall and everything. So it's just been kind of a part of who I am. Yeah. And so when this job came up to work on the communications team here, I jumped at the chance and I moved. And so I've been doing this for about three and a half years. And then last year we were just sort of chatting about, you know, I was thinking. Ways to connect with people like being in PR and communications are always looking for ways to reach new a new audience. And so I love podcasts and love learning through them, and I figured this was a good way to do it. So I came up with the idea for my ocean. I pitched it to my bosses and and they were. They said, yes, like the, you know, the more we can reach people about ocean and ocean issues in concert and talk about conservation, the better. And so that's how my ocean came to be, and we launched in February of this year. Excellent. So we got one of your first episodes? Yeah, yeah, yeah, it was. I think this, well, we launched with it. I call it episode to, but we actually launched with three. So it was kind of all in that same bunch. Yeah. As we listen to the episode titled Carina, Oli diving in style and by the way. Wow. I mean, this woman is a superstar. She is in, I would like cram all this in, you know, wow. He's just like, yeah, her photographs are amazing. Wow. And they really speak, right. I mean, they're so unique that. You're like, what is going on here? You know, I showed my fiance, and he was like, that's not real. How much? How many done I know it's. I mean, she's obviously like you know, trained for it as well, but I know they look, they look Photoshop and I think that was the point, right? Because it makes you take a second look and kind of understood and then look into like, how did you do this and why is she doing it? Yeah. And you brought up a really good point in your episode about how like people are constantly competing for our attention through Instagram, Facebook. And this was just such an amazing way of getting that attention. We don't have a huge attention span for photos. We're like inundated with photos and memes and all that stuff. It was so interesting. So what was it like to interview her? Well, it was. It was so, I mean, when I was sort of curing the first few episodes, she came to mind right away because she is a lovely human being. She's so great to talk to and is so passionate. And we had actually met. Met while probably be going back onto or three years now because she had come to the aquarium to film and episode for a show that she was on because she among other things being a doctor and you know something Everest. She also does TV because of course, I don't know how she finds a time, but it's amazing. And so she was doing this episode. I think it was on Steller sea. Lions was in Canada, and so I hope that are here and got to chat with her then. And then when it came time to launch the podcast, I, you know, she is the definition of an ocean champion, and yeah, so so I, you know, massachu- she lives in Brazil and we connected over Skype, and it was so great to talk to her because we'd scratched the surface when we met and hearing more about the work that she does like she just blows me away and she continues to sort of go at this crazy pace like I have her on Facebook now and she's been in, I think, either Nepal or that part of the world, like volunteering as a doctor with children like she's just really someone who lives life to the fullest..

"Boat could catch a thousand called in a day and if you if you do the calculations that one caught every three minutes for a very long day of fishing so really all i have to do is debate the hook put the line over the side of the boat and and hold back again and immediately they would have caught on the on the line well early accounts of explorers in north america as state that the carrier pigeon which is now extinct the carrier pigeon they were swarms of them such that it would take literally hours an entire afternoon for the swarm of carrier pigeons defiantly sale overhead and now they're all gone and the same thing with the the bison they're almost all gone to so there must be a whole list of sealife that are near extinction and while we consider normal is actually the oceans with many forms of life near extinction right that's right in fact there there are very few species in the that we can be up to the shore have gone extinct for example steller sea cows that's enormous the cow that used to be thirty feet long and lived in the waters of the bearing the that disappeared that went extinct within twenty seven years of being discovered by people in the in the seventeen forties but both animals in the sea still exists somewhere so in that sense the oceans a better off than we are online because many of the big animals that they've done line went extinct when humans first sweats across the continent ten thousand twenty thousand or forty thousand years ago but the extinction wave of really big animals in the sea is happening with today's generation so animals like the the magnificent bluefin tuna in the north atlantic which can grow as large as a boost and that can swim extremely boston attack these laws shows the forage fish like capelin and herring in the north east coast of both america those have become extremely ramp today and they're so highly valued today that it pays to fish them even though they have been so reduced in abundance so that they're really a great risk of going extinct knowledge say a few things about the situation today where we get used to the.

north america america forty thousand years twenty seven years three minutes thirty feet
