Coming up on our top stories on WTO, attorney general Merrick Garland, has appointed a special counsel to look into the discovery of classified documents in an office once used by President Biden and the latest discovery at his Delaware home. Metro's general manager says the system is safe and he is praising the actions of a bus driver after three people, including two kids, were shot yesterday. Staying with WTO for full details on these stories in minutes. One 48. Time for traffic and weather on the 8s, we have Rita Kessler in the WTO traffic center. Looks like we have another update on the activity Montgomery county. This is southbound three 55 or Rockville pike at congressional lane. This was the scene of an earlier vehicle fire an awful lot of cleanup was going on at one point the southbound lanes were closed. Then we thought they were open. The camera shot looked like everything was open, but in fact, it is the right side of the roadway that still remains blocked. So you're still going to find some delays southbound near the wooten Parkway trying to make your way toward congressional lane. The good news is you can in fact get by to the left. So stay to the left to get by. If you do want to get around it at all the first point you're going to be able to pick up southbound three 55 without any of this is going to be from halpine road to points further south. If you're en route three in craft and at four 24 davidsonville road, that was a report of a wreck still a bit of a delay in the southbound direction. If you're getting across the bay bridge, the eastbound span of the bridge, the left lane of two blocked with the work, westbound running two way traffic, where we are seeing a bit of a delay on the eastbound span of the bridges toward the end of the bridge. So keep an eye out in case something else is going on at that point. We also have the delay on the inner loop of the beltway before university off and on making your way toward the ramp to northbound 95 There had been some work there on the ramp in the right lane, but then there was also some crash activity that was moved over to the right shoulder kind of crowding that right exit lane that takes you to the ramp to northbound 95, so it may cause a bit of a tap at the brakes, but things are starting to clear out in that area. On the beltway, the inner loop, at least still slow out of Tyson's headed toward Georgetown pike, the work was set up both ways in the left lane. The George Washington Parkway, northbound has the delay from one 23 headed toward the beltway, but the work is set up in both directions. You are staying to the right to get by. Also in Virginia 29 south of Beverly Ford road, it was a single lane getting by the crash each way and you're still finding delays in both directions. Indeed, I am, thank you, Ann. We'll start off on the inner loop of the capitol beltway in Maryland, got an accident scene soon after Allentown road near joint base Andrews, two left lanes are currently blocked. In fact, it looks like it's going to be the two center lanes. That's right. They got two lanes down the center of the roadway blocked for the accident scene. Listen heard over the scanner that you also have some activity over on the far left shoulder. So my suggestion, state of the foremost right hand side of the roadway, that's going to be the least crowded right now. Once again, inner loop of the beltway, that's headed towards Virginia after a Pennsylvania avenue. Right when he gets past Pennsylvania avenue, you're going to hit those brakes pretty abruptly, stay to the right hand side of the roadway again to center lanes are blocked, you technically have both the far left and the far right lane available to you, but since you've got some activity over on the left shoulder, that's going to be crowded. So once again, stay on the right hand side as you had passed, Allentown road on the inner loop of the beltway. Down in Virginia, thanks for the most part quiet and he work zones that we did have on 66 westbound have a clear don't see them any longer. Eastbound side of 66 looks glorious from an asset to the beltway, I 95 looks good as well from Fredericksburg all the way up towards Springfield. If you're headed on southbound 81, soon after the exits for Steven city on your approach towards the way station looks like the left lane is currently blocked as you head down towards 66. Once again, it's going to be right by the way station along the left hand side. Stay to the right. Back in Maryland, southbound three 55 has work crew blocking the right lane right by Bethesda avenue, nothing too serious, though, right lane is blocked though. It's ten, ten, a small plane crashed into the waters of beards, creek this morning and edge water, the pilot was rescued and taken to the hospital in this expected to be okay, thanks in part to two people who saw the plane go down, went out in a kayak and tried to rescue the pilot. WTO's stetson Miller, who covered the story, joined us to tell us what happened. So Maryland state police say the crash happened just after the plane took off from Lee airport. They say witnesses heard the engine of the plane sputtering after it took off. The two people who went out in those kayaks to help this pilot get out of the water actually told me they sold the plane coming towards their house, the plane then banked to the left and crashed into the creek and that's when they actually went out in these kayaks to try to help out that pilot. And so it's been pretty cold. We understand there was a lot of ice. How did those two neighbors get out there and kayaks? Well, so it's pretty incredible how they did this. They're a father and son John jolene and John julene junior they took a shovel to skim the kayaks across the ice until they got to the plane where the ice had broken. Now the plane was sinking and they told me they knew the pilot would be in some serious danger given how cold the water was. They were worried about hypothermia. So the pilot climbed onto a wing then got onto the kayaks actually held onto those kayaks until a Maryland department of natural resources boat came and got him out of the water and they were actually there pretty quickly within about 15 minutes of the 9-1-1 call, but the fire department told me that the pilot's life was likely saved thanks to these really heroic actions of these two neighbors. We're hearing the pilot is in the hospital. What do we know about the plane? So it was a piper single engine plane and I can tell you it was still there a few hours ago after the rescue, the plane was still submerged under the water and all I could see was the tail, so they'll still have to get that plane out of the water and determine how this happened. Maryland state police say they are investigating now. That was WTO stetson Miller. Pets can often give people much needed companionship and a renewed sense of meaning.
