Thanks in part to a steady influx of immigrants from philippines. Chris on hong is past president of the southeast manitoba philippine association and he hosts a video podcast. It's called baron guy canada. Chris good morning the morning matt. And thanks for having me. Tell me about the community filipino community. And how in particular. It's been hit by colin. Steinbeck itself has been hit by covid a here in steinbach there's Roughly three thousand filipino. So call the city their home. The best describe it is How how all of those incidents are distributed according to where they work you know so as you know less there Just a representative of a huge chump of the filipino immigrant population here who work in the healthcare sector and the the rest are distributed among the different factories and farms in bart's so the way we The filipino comedians have been affected is almost the same as the rest of the local community. So we're all in the same storm but in different boats what separates us from from the others is our unique culture and scene from Experienced what helped him in his recovery. Do a lot of karaoke in that raises racist oxygen levels for some reason. And that's that's pretty common. It's stereotypical and it's true. In for the grownups who have experienced this. This pandemic covid nineteen pandemic. of course there have been affected by the loss of jobs Cutback in hours. So it's been a challenge but it's not so much It didn't affect their mental health. So much because We have this unique. I would call it unfair advantage because there was a similar Break happened back in the early two. Thousands actually know the sars outbreak in the bird. Flu outbreak that was right. At our doorstep back in the philippines so back we were bombarded with images of hong kong ceded dwellers. They were all wearing face masks. So we're used to that As far as the physical disconnection is concerned. What we're immigrants. We used to be the he used to being physically disconnected from from our loved ones. Because we're so far away here in canada and we're known to be very close to our extended family and we're also be very social media savvy. So let me do we. This fall back on on social media and video calling. Do you keep in touch with their family back in the philippines. Let me bring one more voice into our conversation Talk and in many ways more broadly. But how the city responded earl funk is the mayor of steinbach and the owner of earls meat market on main street mr mayor. Good morning to you morning. How would you characterize how your city has been affected by this pandemic. There was a spike in cases. Last fall and we heard what people coming together but but many people in your city were lost to the virus. How would you characterize what happened to to your town. We we are morning with with every resident that is also morning loss. We re lost forty five residents to cruelty and we feel for them and we warn with them as as they are mourning their their loved. Ones how we were affected. I mean our numbers skyrocketed and it was. It was out of control. And we're at forty percent positivity testing rate and from city hall. We just made out. We just made a plea to our to our residents and we just ask them to to consider and follow the restrictions that were there and we were just amazed by the.

"Approach. What's what's the outcome come. Sir aren't much better. I'm a proponent of housing first principle which states that we need to provide housing for anything else And i think that's what's really missing right now in in siberia but also in other cities. We're talking about holistic approach. We tried to not just think of a person as a unit that goes into a housing unit We try to look at the whole person. We try to take care of their usual wellbeing. Their mental health their physical health by really trying to Connect the person with the right resources and providing those resources ourselves when we can We see a lot more success with with these individuals. Can i go back to something you said earlier. Which is referenced the hidden homeless. What does that mean. Head is a person who is. They don't have a permanent address. They might be couch surfing. They might be staying with friends. They might be staying with family But it's really temporary. They're hidden you. Don't you don't see you know you see them on the side of the street necessarily but they don't have a you know a place to call their own You see this in in many situations to like in in in our housing You know people are allowed to visit for up to two weeks but so then they have to keep moving right And either you know. This is a pretty large problem in itself. Well it would be exacerbated presumably by covert where we can't even. We're not even supposed to be going to other people's houses let alone. You know sleeping on a couch or something like that. The city has tried to address. The needs of those experiencing homelessness take a listen to the mayor of sudbury brian. Bigger we actually had An ongoing open forum where people could write in but as well a a A zoom meeting by we had speakers with lived experiences in on one session and as well as our partner agencies talking about homelessness as it is you know at the moment to end their suggestion solutions. For how we could improve the support for people that were facing those challenges. You've been part of that consultation process. What do you want from the city when it comes to dealing with this in a meaningful and i'll use your word way. I think the real solution from all levels of government is to create affordable housing. I think without that you're you're just basically Providing band-aid solutions temporary solutions. And these kinds of situations you're left treating symptoms and the the after effects so here you know providing a you know a soup kitchen or you're providing Clothing and things like that. But what people really need i you know. Root of everything is A safe place to sleep and live that you can't really have proper. Health can't really have proper mental health job opportunities. all these are hint really on Having a safe place to live. So just before i let you go. I'll ask you the same question that i asked in east which is in the midst of this And it a huge almost overwhelming issue. But where are you finding. Hope in the work that you're doing. I think that like i said the previous consultations so happening. Good i you know Your previous story. You know so so amazing. So wonderful and You know it's i think that's that just goes to show that it is possible it you know. There's there's a lot of people in this world who are committed to helping people into doing good and you know they're they're on our community in our schools that are in our government and i think if You know we get enough of them together. And if we got enough people Working together on these issues We can solve this. I'm glad to have had the chance to hear but the work that you're doing. Thanks for that and thanks for being with us this morning. take care. bye-bye. Aaron saint-pierre is with native people of sudbury development corporation. He joined us from sudbury ontario. "I don't know it's hard because all of our rituals grieving and funeral. We can't do those really well. Over zoom a lot of it is is simply trying to rely on relationships and our connections with our family and friends and doing our best to take care of each other. Those of us who were younger going grocery shopping for those of us who are older Those are able to work from home the employers letting them even though there's four year olds running around the house. It's a lot of kind of pulling together and trying to be as patient and empathetic and compassionate as possible. Kyle thank you very much for your words and for speaking with us. "Yeah there's one group that in in the area that has a Very specific dress code so they can easily identify that. And so i think it's a little bit of A character to a really easy way to slander spivak as a whole for the actions of a few you. You wrote a piece that was published in canadian mennonite. And which you say that there's all kinds of finger pointing on and meanwhile you said we are dying. Here was the message you wanted to send to people after the rally last saturday. It was very frustrating because People not somewhere community were blaming all of us and slandering all of us. I notice people saying. I'm never going back again today. I see signed back has a forty percent test positively. You guys deserve this. Had an anti mask rallied. And i just wanted to communicate to people that if i take is smugness or arrogance or sanctimoniousness. That's not helpful to us. I really want people to lead with empathy and compassion. I and what responses you'll get from people to even saying very positive so my own church. We invited all of our congregation to Candles facing on the street window as a sign of support and prayer in solidarity all of the healthcare workers and all of the patients in the hospital and all of their families. This last weeks whenever the uniting for all of us. I kind of joke that two of my friends who would never vote for the same political party. Text each other saying you got the liberals. I'll get the conservative and we will. We will show support to our healthcare workers this community of yours. Sixteen thousand people in steinbeck. And so when you got a test positivity rate of forty percent it would seem that almost everybody knows somebody or has someone in their family who has covid twenty four deaths. People would know them. How can you move on from there. What do you think needs to happen in your community to help you heal from that. I don't know it's hard because all of our rituals grieving and funeral. "Project they called it project fish bowl okay think about the Dolby close world imagine the possibility is that you company maybe touch the edge of the dome was from shell and you know what is if you were in the Truman show in that scenario what's the first thing you try to do you explore the boundaries how deep it if they weren't the agency a hide out right well that's exactly what it is they're taking which are probing the you know the Antarctic the Russians you know where the space race right there with you know they're winning all then we went there but they just want all my quick I'm going home hello this is Russell are what we're doing a follow they're going back to Antarctica like dozens of options that are you are we got the the missile race we call project this ball which is part of operation Dominic well I was going to win what we've conference in Lubbock Texas and the pastor of the church knows and he says yeah you never look up the name Dominik as adults yeah look it up you look at the name Dominik it needs of the war they called our missions Sheesh more of the war it was I the guy you look at the trying to avoid a conspiracy they're not helping with the night right we were the things that make you go trying to get out of the cage trying to escape the K. looks like all right let's let's say hi to a Jeff in Victoria BC Jeff on the wildcard line welcome to coast to coast AM Richard you're my favorite you're a breath of fresh air thank you Sir anyway I was gonna say like how many like I think this is a dimensional problem like people's concept of dimensions like I think we have we live in a seven dimensional world all right and what does how does that how does that figure into a of a flat earth Jeff what he thought he he wall because it's like it's like saying that we live in a two dimensional world now we find out what language thanks and with but I mean I think we live actually live in a in a seven dimensional world that's interesting yeah there is a video out there were William Shatner's talking about all this and he was doing a series of the tentacles more facts and I forgot the name of it but he was interviewing people like get your **** and he held nearly restless and then others and he's looking into it is like you know the talk about string theory multi dimensions of that okay I yeah I get do you guys believe that but why didn't we get hyped up with in force mission being time what's the fifteen inch well you know we have thirteen images or fifteen or twenty one or whatever you have a great what what what's the catch well we can cause people to okay the what is it I mean it's great to throw these words out there but like word you can send what does what does it mean it was now this is William Shatner I kept the curtain so he's interviewing that your doctor or in it as only shocker can do we stop he's like you know when you go to work what do we know what you if you like well it it you know I think like as long as it doesn't do anything how do you prove what you're thinking is true you can't prove that you can write equations on chalkboards you can't so this is shudders conclusion out his conclusion with science and science fiction are the same thing this sadly I would say that the true commentary on today's sites that's not true such but that's what science today if you come in Nicholas that's what saw that coming some people they all in his they were starting to wander off into the equation after equations construct something that has no basis in reality that you know and that was it is that we are one fifty plus you years later and it only got worse so you know it's it's nice for science fiction but all right I Jeff thank you for the call underneath this dome is there room for satellites do you do do you believe we've launched satellites in that they are orbiting our planet sure well planet nope okay our our our circle yes our circle you know I personally don't have any problem with the idea that there there's a quick floating around overheads what they're doing up there how they're doing it that's the thing that I have a question about if people just Google you know satellite on balloons in NC like it's very very large piece will quickly going up on the massively huge balloons be wash from Antarctica again let me just go back a goal okay what would what's happening here and you know even Google and others talking about the thousands of balloons up there with satellites and you from the what ifs satellites are hanging up there on both we have plenty of cases showing that they are we have even recently documented cases where people are finding you since we're the only option whatever people find the satellite in the back yard dash two yeah but I believe that there is not the son of noon let's just go with the local model now if the son of one are able to move in to give her they are somehow suspended up there then I have no problem believing that other things could possibly do the defect what about what about comets asteroids asteroids that have struck struck the earth yeah yeah that that that's another good one again we're looking up in the sky like the topic of the earth with the ship they are like everybody does it first a little shot look I don't know this would be speaking we see that the angel is car interchangeable I saw a star fall from heaven to teach him was given the key to the shop with bombs that revelation not posted that the armies of heaven interchangeable seven armies the host of heaven ours so I mean are these just chips cultural memberships if the TV series chips with the with the guys on the motorcycle you know I don't know and the idea of the fragments of the firmament there are still falling to earth yeah I don't know what god every now and then decide throw stuff at us I don't know you know I have no idea all right we are approaching the bottom of the hour will take a time I'll come back to some more calls ask more questions rob Skiba documentary filmmaker author is with us discussing the flat earth and taking some of the break are the waking eyes on a train musicians from Winnipeg and "Like it almost doesn't do anything how do you prove what you're thinking is true you can't prove that you can write equations on chalkboards you can't go so this is shudders conclusion on his conclusion with science and science fiction are the same thing this sadly I would say that the true commentary on today's sites that's not true science but that's what science today at the top and Nicholas that's what saw that coming some people they all in his they were starting to wander off into the equation after equations click instructional thing that has no basis in reality that you know and and that was it is that we are one fifty plus you years later and it only got worse so you know it's it's nice for science fiction but who all right I Jeff thank you for the call underneath this dome is there room for satellites do you do do you believe we've launched satellites in that they are orbiting our planet sure well planet nope not okay our our our circle yes or circle you know I personally don't have any problem with the idea that there there's a quick floating around overheads what they're doing up there how they're doing it that's the thing that I have a question about if people just Google you know satellite on balloons in and see like these very very large pieces were quick to going up on the massively huge balloons being watch from Antarctica again let me just go back a goal okay what would what's happening here and you know even Google and others talking about the thousands of balloons up there with satellites and you from the what ifs satellites are hanging up there on balloons out we have plenty of cases showing that they are we have even recently documented cases where people are finding you since we're alone pocket whatever people find the satellite in their backyard dash two yeah but I believe that there you know if the sun and moon let's just go with the local model now if the son of one are able to move in the future up there somehow suspended up there then I have no problem believing that other things could possibly do this defect what about what about comets asteroids asteroids that have struck all struck the earth yeah yeah that that that's another good one again we're looking up in the sky what the topic of the current position they are every like everybody does it first a little shot look I don't know this would be speaking we see that the angel and starred interchangeable I saw a star fall from heaven to him was given given the key to the shop the bombs that revelation not posted at the armies of heaven interchange will also have an army to the host of heaven stars so I mean are these just Cobb chips will control memberships if the TV series chips with the the two guys on a motorcycle you know I don't know and like your other fragments of the firmament there are still falling to earth yeah I don't know this god every now and then decide throw stuff at us I don't know you know I have no idea all right we are approaching the bottom of the hour will take a time I'll come back to some more calls ask more questions rob Skiba documentary filmmaker author is with us discussing the flat earth and taking some of the break are the waking eyes on a train musicians from Winnipeg and Steinbach Manitoba.

"And then when I first saw him, I I was giddy. I I could describe it anymore because he's just so math and as head is so huge compared to anything of ever seen before we have our livestock sanctuary and all the animals that we come are some are destined for. Or slaughter for for meat, and we go to auction at different times to save whichever ones that that we can to give them a full full life is leads to the animal sanctuary. You have in Steinbeck then. Yes. You know, it's interesting though, because these stories about knickers in dozer these people are fascinated with the the stories in these enormous stairs. Why do you think that is? Why do you think they capture our imaginations just its largest life? It's you know, what people know or might not know about the the animals been depends if they've been around in their their their lives are visited them petting farms, or or the such to find something abnormal something bigger, and then to find it if they are relaxed and calm and people can touch them in pet them. And then all of a sudden they develop a connection and that connection goes with a lot of people. And, you know, sometimes they're theories changed on you know, they should be eating meat or maybe they should reduce it. And that the only thing that we hope for it is does pretty cuddly. Oh, the he is a musher you start scratching him, and he'll just push into you just to get more scratch. His and to that you lack see those who will lie down beside her. Yeah. Delight down next those you can lean up against a little bit. Because you don't wanna get too. Just in case he wants to roll. It's a great story Carl. Thanks pro. Take a bye bye bye. Karl shown rock is the proud guardian of dozer of very tall steer at an animal sanctuary in Steinbach Manitoba for photographs of dozer who is in fact taller than us. Australian counterpart knickers go to our website, you truly should CBC dot CA slash AH..

"Slash AH. And listen knickers is great. But for sheer bulk dozer is greater noser is a steer in Steinbach Manitoba. He lives on an animal sanctuary owned and operated by Karl shown rock, we reach Mr. shown rock in Steinbeck. Carl doesn't seem possible that does our could beat out knickers having the largest. Steer. How big is. He how big is dozer at first we thought he was only just over probably six three because when we got him a few months ago, we were told the measured a couple years ago. He was six three and yesterday when some of these other media came down, we'd thought what the heck let's bring up the tape measure because we just hadn't thought of it before. And he was six five we were kind of blown away nothing superficial like Guinness official. But that's what we got. So is that indicate that does our is still a growing. Boy. Yes. Yeah. He's only six years old. So yeah, he's still Girling. Is that alarming to learn? It was actually it was kind of Louis away a little bit. We're like, oh really that big. But we were kind of fucked. Okay. This we got this desisted on knickers. And it does seem that you're dozer is well just a few centimeters taller, but nNcholas is six foot four inches. And so you're saying that does is six five right? Yeah. He was just a little over. But you know, he wasn't on the ground. I don't mind hearing a limelight. And even if he's six four wheel Fe, and we'll we'll match and that sound found grade to you gotta admit though, when you look at that photo of knickers, he's extrordinary I'm use their towering over this heard from cows. When did when you saw that phone it went to think, oh, I was blown away. I I I thought it was Photoshop, but then looking closely growing up on a very far all my life. I look. Okay. This cows, aren't you know, older more mature full-sized cows? They look a little bit younger. So then I was like, okay. That could be true. And is does tower over your other cows? Oh by far. Yeah. Do they go and serve? No, actually, quite gentle giant we have a couple of horses in the same with them, and they kind of pushed him around a little bit. And he allows it. He's just that type of guy that he's very very called. Because knickers is apparently a bit of a handful. Oh, yeah. Note our dozer, and that's due to his his, mama. Rebecca, she is the one that actually saved them from a beef, Arman, El Berta, and she is only five four five five and thought him when he was very young. So she towered above him. And then now there have rivers and he just really shines fair. We have to point out the Rebecca's not a cow. The woman who don't. Yeah. Sorry. I say mom because my wife likes to call her. Mike. Okay. But does that mean that those are was destined to become hamburger than yes? And how did she end up saving him? And she I guess knew the owners, and she would all go out into the pastor to to read and just relax the animals, and those are the one that burned befriend in her. So she started coming friendly with them and visiting him over and over and and pet on the never else, and he is just your home since then what did you think when she showed up nasty to take over the care of dozer? I I was super excited I grew up on dairy farm. So having a whole theme steer that is just a giant. I would super excited..
