"Strong car, strong engine strong drivers, good time management, but they didn't win another race and these little factors all add up to give an impression that things aren't running as smoothly as they are. I think losing his losing that overall overarching understanding of the team understanding all the ups and downs of this season and how they've had to manage the cost cap where they've gone right where they've gone wrong, dealing with the media, dealing with the commercial aspects, dealing with FIA. I think all that knowledge to kind of throw it all away and try to try to get somebody into understand that very, very quickly is going to be nigh on impossible. Coming up, we'll talk about how it will affect Ferrari's star, Charles Leclerc and what it could mean for the team in 2023. And why this seems to be an Achilles heel for the team over the years stick around. I welcome back to the podcast, we're talking to John noble today about Ferrari's lack of leadership after the team principal matta bonato resigned earlier today. John, tell me a little bit about that relationship with the drivers. I've said many times on the Sunday Night podcast, the race review podcasts that we do that if I was being absolutely brutal about it and it's very easy isn't it to put yourself in somebody else's shoes when you haven't got a walk in them. The way that Red Bull go about their business is they have a number one driver. They've managed to win world championships that way. Ferrari this year have been reluctant to name Charles Leclerc and maybe contractually they can't with Carlos as their number one driver, losing matea bonato, somebody else coming in, how will this affect the drivers, their star drivers was there, maybe some Discord. This season, maybe things weren't going so well with the drivers and what it could mean for 2023. I don't think that I think the key aspect for the drivers isn't how they're managed next year. It's ultimately going to come down to that car. Ferrari's hopes in 23 will rest on it, making a good enough step. Not only to get ahead of Red Bull, but let's not forget Mercedes ended the year pretty much for the second quickest car, helped by the fact for our stop development for logs, it hit the cost cap limit. But if Mercedes with the wrong car concept have ended the year of a race winning car, then their revamp for the winter is going to point to them making massive progress into next year. So I think the critical aspect is car performance and I think the very time you don't want to lose someone with an understanding of cloud performance, what's gone right, what's gone wrong, where improvements need to go is the winter. Almost going to be a bit of a vacuum and the critical months, because you make one wrong step now in January, February in terms of car development direction, where you pursue things, what avenue we go down, where we don't commit resources, where we do commit resources, get that wrong now, and the consequences are going to last a month and months down the road. We've seen over the years, I made some notes earlier. I was thinking back, I was trying to do the timeline before, but not so. Benny and then Mathieu, mark a message, he didn't last very long. Stefano Dominica in 2014, of course he was another Ferrari lifer he'd come up three being sporting director manager of various bits in the team and worked under the very successful management team when Ferrari were winning world championships, so Stefano domenicali knew again Ferrari. He was there for quite a long time in comparison to others. And of course, now he is with Formula One group, a CEO of the actual sport. What do Ferrari need to do with their next appointment in this role? You've got a question why it's hit this kind of point now basically, which comes down to a lack of patience. I think that the brutal reality of Formula One is that to win a title does take time. And a success for teams is almost like trying to steer an oil tanker. You can't do it on a Japanese piece, so to speak takes Mars and Mars turn on all time around. It's the same for a full on team. You've got to commit to the resources and the personnel and the progress and the time it takes to evolve and understand. And also, there are pitfalls on the way, look at John Todd, who think he arrived 1993 into Ferrari by 96, they were winning races and pushing for championship. So 97 had a car that could have won the championship, didn't happen because her F 98 beat my McLaren 99, they won the constructors to any of those points for his management to understand what they could have said Todd. Well, this isn't working, and that you've got a car that capable of winning. It's not, you've not won the championship. Disappear off and we'll do something different. But kept the faith, kept committed and opened up for our most successful spell of the modern era. You look at Red Bull, Chris Horner, now formulas most experienced team, you know, you could argue that the turbo hybrid era was after the success they'd had. No matter shits could have said, well, it's not working. Now it's obviously that you're a one hit wonder, disappear, but Christian sorted out, turn that team around, eventually got there with Honda and they've now double championship for Verstappen, constructor championship, again.

"Now if you're wondering why you might be able to hear engines wearing background noise at the moment, I am here with our F one reporter Luke Smith. We are walking on the streets of Monaco because we are of course coming to you live from Monaco itself. We are doing the most Monaco thing possible, I think, Luke. We are on our way to a yacht party. Oh, we know how to live, don't we? No, it's actually quite an interesting one. It's a business of F one form that is being hosted by the Financial Times and most sport network. So we've got Stefano domenicali speaking, Khloe target Adams, he's sort of basically the person in charge of all of F one's calendar and schedule and everything. We're going to be hearing some quite interesting topics up for debate tonight. So yeah, be sure to stay tuned in the coming days to see lots of analysis and news coming from that. But yeah, are y'all in Monaco? It has to be done really, doesn't it, I know. You're trying to pass it off like it's work. Now, of course, you will be writing stories off the back. So although it is a rather special location, shall we say, we are still very much working. That's enough about us telling everybody at home who can't be here. Let's talk about what we saw, what we all saw on track today. First day of running, the new weekend format, obviously we've condensed it because we had the back to back with Spain to try and help with the logistical efforts of getting everything set up here in Monaco. But it looks like it's Charles the clerks to lose. Yeah, it's been a really impressive start from Charles Leclerc. We talked about this Monaco curse that he's got obviously he's never finished a race here, even at the Monaco story a couple of weeks ago. He crashed Niki Lauda's Ferrari. So I think that's been one of the main narratives coming into the weekend. But Charles so far, so good. The Ferraris are really good in the low speed corners. Obviously that's pretty much all there is here around Monaco. I think we saw in Spain through sex to three just how good that Ferrari was. Red Bull, their big advantage so far the season has been straight line speed and obviously that wasn't that's not really a thing around here. You can't really get that quick, so yeah, I think that's definitely new to some of Red Bull's advantage. And yet it's been I think a really solid start from Charles track evolution and confidence there's two big factors that do allow you to gain so much lap time and shall really appear to make big gains through the day and was taking big steps forward with every single running dead. Every single time you put on a fresh set of softs you would always find an extra few tenths. So yeah, it's when the day P one science P two it's been a really good day for Ferrari. I think they're in the driving seat right now and finally at last if we can't speak to you soon Charles Leclerc's Monica hoodie might be getting close to being over. I think I saw you tweet Luke and a little earlier about how much this is a track that demands absolute and utter confidence from its drivers and the subject of tweet in particular we're going to come on to you because they maybe haven't had such a good day today but how much of this curse do you think actually could affect Charles psychologically and obviously today it didn't look like he had any confidence of Christ at all, but is that something that might go through his head as we get further into the weekend? Charlotte says that it's not a thing I asked him yesterday and said, is it something that weighs on your mind or you think about at all and he said, no, not really that I don't think about it. But to me, I think just given all of the buzz around show right now, the fact he's in this fight for the championship, the fact Red Bull are on this amazing run of form at the moment. He really needs to get a win to stop Max Verstappen streak. I think it's kind of inevitable. The air has to be on his mind a little bit, at least thinking, what have I got to do to catch break round here? Right the way back to formula two, he's never had any luck in Monaco. It's the streets you grew up on. He said it's weird like racing on the streets where I took the bus to school every single day. So it is, yeah, I mean, there's a lot of emotions that up in this place, four showers. So I think that for him, it's massively important that he does get off his back. I think it's really important for Charles to try and put that to bed and yeah, really, I think for the sake of his own championship, but also just for his future here in Monaco as well. He doesn't want to keep coming back year after year and people like me asking him those really annoying questions saying, oh, you've never done well here. So yeah, I think it is hopefully going to be good for Charlotte to have a clean weekend and finally get a good design Monaco. The early signs that have been really, really positive that I must say. Now we did have a couple of interruptions to running today. In FP one, we had both houses stop out on track with battery voltas on Twitter, noting how Mick parked the car rash cast and disturbed Alonso just like his dad had done. Previously, I don't know what year that was actually. What year was that? 2006. Okay, yeah. Battery voltas on Twitter noting that Mick had parked the car at rest cast disturbing Alonso just like his dad had done previously, which I thought was quite a nice mirroring of events. I'm sure Mick wasn't too pleased about it, but a nice little spot there from Twitter. But the biggest or most important, I guess story coming out was Ricardo's crash in FP two. Now we spoke about confidence. There's been a lot of negative press actually shall we say around Ricardo coming into this weekend off the back of Zach Brown saying that he hadn't met expectations. His own included, so not just McLaren's expectations, but I'm sure his own as well. What does that crash mean for Ricardo's the rest of Ricardo's weekend? I think of all tracks where you need that confidence as we were talking about. This is the one. It's Monaco, like you need to be at the absolute peak of your powers and in a really good spot. So much pressure is on you and one driver I spoke to yesterday he said that basically yeah, every single lap, you get a little bit closer and a little bit close to the wall. You want to kiss it, but not front not French kiss it, which I thought was quite a nice way of summing it up. And for Ricardo, I mean, that was a big shunt, and a time when he is, yes, struggling for a bit of confidence, maybe. He is really, really trying to get to the boss of his struggles with this car, because clearly something isn't working as it should be. I think that that was really the last thing he needed. It was a pretty big shunt. A lot of drivers were struggling through that complex swimming pool..

"I haven't seen very much of the footage. The problem I have with it is the safety aspect, which is that I was at turn 13 for FP one on Friday, where there were drone cams and there is a reason that in general use drones are not flown very near things and drones have got like sharp, very fast spinning blades and for them to be flying around like that. I wasn't sold on the idea. Because they were dashing around right above where we were and it wouldn't take very much for drones to fall out of the sky and hit a driver on the head mid chicane and cause also problems. I'm sure the FIA have thought of this in FOM and all, you know, sure everyone's thought of that, but they're not foolproof and I just think for the sake of an extra bit of footage maybe it's safe and not to risk that. You say with I'm sure they thought about it, but then they probably should have thought about what happened in Abu Dhabi 2021 being possible and they clearly didn't. It's worth it. It's worth pointing these things out. Luke, what's your thoughts on the drain cam? Can I give a simple answer? Yes, please do. Yeah, it was cool. I think it needs to be a bit better. Alpha tauri did some really cool stuff with some drawings for their lunch a few years ago. Talking about that's what I'm talking about. That's when it's done really well and obviously that's a closed circuit and it's for filming purposes. But as we said, it can work. We've seen it in other series. Safety aspect definitely something that needs to consider and be aware of. But hopefully it can be a cool broadcasting advance for F one. Okay, what I'm going to group Lee congest together in the positive camp and Megan you're in the negative camp. Where I also am and where is the entirely correct place to be? Don't do it again, F one. Thanks very much. It was really nice to see what I presume was the WRX track that Barcelona had a few years ago. We saw it again and repeat. It didn't add anything as just said it just made me feel queasy as does the helmet cam at that times. I don't think it's wonderful. Don't get me wrong, that is brilliant, but what I would suggest is not to use it as part of the live element of it, save it for replays. The problem with that obviously is I know that recording and broadcasting different camera features very expensive, very difficult. But anyway. But I think the formula E helmet cam is brilliant. Like that is sharp, it's clear, it's really good. So again, they just need to work out how to get it on that on that same level. We polled the Twitter audience. We got over a thousand votes and I can tell you Alex that's 63.1% are fans of drone cam. So I think you just gotta you guys are just gonna have to embrace it because it's coming. I feel like this is the future of broadcast like they're trialing it with other NFL, they're trying it with football, which again is more static. I grant you and it's on a smaller playing field. But I genuinely feel like it's like four K cameras, right? This is the future of broadcasting. You're right, they have to get it right, but I feel like this is going to be a you're going to be massively outvoted in terms of whether or not this is coming to F one or not. Yeah, I think as well just on the helmet cam. With what you said about doing it separately, because sorry to bring up bikes again. But in moza GP, you can watch whole races from the helmet cams or they've got a new shoulder can, which they've been using, which is really cool. So maybe something like that would be a good compromise for people who do like the helmet cam and people who don't. Well, on that, I'll be honest, I'm not going to stop going on about how it's a bad thing because eventually if a drone falls out of the sky, Blake chops someone's arm off, that's going to be a massive lawsuit. If it falls into the driver's head out of control, then I just think it's going to be worth it. I take the point that it can look good. It didn't hear, but I still think it's a bad thing. But as we say, good on them for trying something because for how many years did Formula One just do absolutely nothing to help fans even understand the racing better. So fair enough. Let's speaking of fans, let's come and talk about a really serious issue for this weekend, which was the problems that a lot of the fans at the tracking Barcelona encountered. And this is actually got a really serious element underneath it regarding what could potentially happen to this race in the future because essentially F one has promoters on notice that they risk losing their races. Their places on the calendar if they don't keep up with what F one itself considers to be the best. And this is actually sent us on three key areas. That's what they offer to the public in terms of racing, the track infrastructure and management of the events, Stefano domenicali, F one CEO, saying in an interview earlier in this year, it's not enough to have pedigree anymore. You also have to demonstrate that you were keeping up. Now Megan and Luke, obviously, you guys were there, so I think it's really important that you talk about it first because as we discussed before coming on air, lots and lots of people getting in touch, sharing their views on social media about how much they affected they suffered considering not able to get hold of water and very easy in the burning sunshine. So mega maybe you could just sort of sum up what the issues were at Barcelona this weekend. I think the main issues I've seen people discussing, one of them was around our access to water, so a lot of the food and drinks stands. It's one stand for food and drink,.

"I think what we're seeing as well. Is that the signing of signs I'm actually it was pretty sure you know he's a He's a quick guy, I think, because again, you mentioned Red Bull earlier. He's one of the guys that was dropped from that program before. He really got a chance to show what he could do, and I think he's always driven with a bit of a chip on his shoulder. Um and Ferrari that just getting better and better. You know, last year was they were kind of on the back foot. You know, they have trusted survive, showed they had that all the controversy with their engine. That meant that they started massively on the back side. And I think from the very beginning of the season, they tell us all what we're not gonna. We're not gonna make much of this year. Let Ze concentrate on next season and just seeing the fruits of that now so I'm you know, I've got into form the one by watching Schumacher Ferrari, So I've always had a soft spot for that team. It would be amazing if they could get in the front row of the grid. And like I said, if they could do that you're in a great position to challenge for podium, maybe even a win on Sunday. Jeremy mentioned this on the show yesterday night. I want to get some thought on this because we were trying to talk about this a little bit about the inroads there, making the Syriza exposing fans to F one and the inroads there making here in the states. They add the race in Miami next year. And I guess there was a story this week that there are more U. S based sponsors that we're now getting involved in F one. Do you have any feel about what kind of inroads they are that they've talked about any kind inroads they are able to make right now in the states. Yeah. I mean, I think that's really one of the big areas of all the teams are looking at, and Miami is huge for no one's been trying to do that. For about four years. There was a lot of local opposition, so I think it was quite frustrating to form the one and the organizer's because there's such a small thing that was Event in this big event from happening that's not been sold. Have gotten it on the calendar. Austin wants to stay long term as well in Austin, this fantastic event you know, if any of our listeners are thinking about which way to go to, I would wouldn't talk them against going to Miami, but often as well is a fantastic race, one of the best on the schedule itself. Yeah, just this week. I mean, t o kind of talk to your point about what you were saying about sponsors coming on Red Bull or one of the teams have had a lot of American soldiers coming onto Had Walmart Oracle. I think this weekend about it Cash. APA's well so I'm not paid by. Those companies don't write up three promotions for them. But for those of the kind of those kind of companies that are getting involved in at one, and I'm friendly enough Has not really been that much buying from American companies to everyone in the past. You know, the one thing getting erased on his great getting getting that exposure. Getting that sex is great. The one thing that America needs if they have a top level driver, I think that's now. The F one CEO Stefano Domenicali that the guy who's replaced Chase carry this year. That's one of the things he's looking at us like we're looking at young American talents. We want to get the big name American guy on the grid in it, and you can see it's born from all over the place. I mean, F one now in Spain is huge. Before Fernando Alonso came into sport, it was nothing there. You know it was all about motorbike racing, So I think that is the next step. But it's really encouraging to see all these things. Obviously. Yeah, I've got the English accent, but I work for e works for ESPN. So you know, the more we get of this, the better and, yeah, I think it Z really going in a good way and speaking to people in Austin Drive to survive has been a huge part of that. You know that they have a section on their website. Which says, you know what Got you into Formula One? Exactly what you guys said at the top of the show. I saw at the top of this segment that I'm that I'm joining you guys for So many of the founders saying, you know, we just watched are to survive hooked on it can't wait to get to get more of it. You know, just the interactive it more the sport, So I think that there's really going in a good way and the fact that so many people are joining for this season and seeing this fight between Hamilton of the staff, and I think it is really good, because if it's Louis had won the first four races You know, without anyone touching him. They might have thought that Okay, Maybe maybe the thing I watched. It wasn't what it is on the trap, but it's It's the perfect kind of thing to step into. So yeah, it's a really exciting time for everyone in the state. How many years can they do Drive to survive? I mean, 20 do they eventually decide We don't need it anymore. Or they realized that it is an integral part of the interest. Yeah, That's a great question. And you know what? It might sound crazy because the way sport is going. I mean, we've had the last dance, which was looking back at Michael Jordan, obviously, but there's the all or nothing serious that do different sports and Amazon. But One for a long time was very Internet. It's thinking and there were a lot of people when that was announced, he said. Well, what can that sets do for for what for loans bigger than that selection? I think after three seasons It's completely flipped on its head the narrative because people have realized you know exactly what we're saying. There's so much interest that's generated from it. So I think that one That there's no appetite for everyone to end any time soon. I think, Netflix you know the numbers I saw they were tweeting when that last season came out. Super impressive. I think it's when the most popular shows that had this year so I could see that going on and on and you know, I know guys like Daniel Father and landed Norris have seen a big Increasing their popularity from from that, and it's just about humanizing those drivers a lot as well with you wasn't always that wasn't always the thing that was being done, so I think I mean hell, I might be on this show in 20 years time. We might be talking about season 3 23, but Yeah, Season four should be great, though. I mean stopping Hamilton is exactly the kind of Championship. You want for a documentary series like that? So I think Netflix have got on board in a good time. I know a few guys that work on their team. And, yeah, they're buzzing about it. And I think this could be the best season that had yet. Well, well, I mean, I mentioned to see again like it is a strange thing to watch it and think. Hey, next year, I'm gonna watch the television show. I want to see you know, Red Bull, making the decisions on strategy at the last race and how You know, it felt love it like they blew it. We'll see right at the moment is so every race embassy as you guys know now that the Netflix crew will pick a team A certain race. Just that's the way that kind of film stuff. And so every race where something horrible goes wrong for teen people. You see people tweeting that well, wonderful networks the weight this week. Like you said, I want to. I want to see the deep dive into that decision. Um, I think that they were they were with Mercedes for one of the last races have been with red balls so I've already We already should have some good insight into the early bit of this championship fight. Yeah, It's just great to see because a lot of that insight you just don't get it, even if you you know Circle knows you said it felt like to make a you know, an American sports comparison. Feel like last week, I was watching watching Mercedes pull off. That strategy was like watching Bella check get exactly what he wanted. Like Total wolf. He pulled.
