"Kelvin beach and his traveled the country as an offensive tackle, playing for the Steelers Jaguars jets and Cardinals since 2012. In March, he made a trip to Zambia after constructing two clean water wells and financing a third. We actually wanted to actually see the work. We wanted to see how it impacted people and how water impacted their lives, how access to what impacted their lives and those who did not have access to how it affected their lives. Beacham was the Cardinals, Walter Payton man of the year in 2021 for his humanitarian work. He's associated with food banks in his hometown and every city where he's played. Beecham also was a champion of local education equity, but his association with world vision has led him to international causes. I met world vision this has to be 2015 with 2014, 2015, and I got introduced to him through the NFL PA as young man Dexter Santos. And he knew what I was doing quite a bit here domestically and I told him to start thinking about things on a global scale. Beacham says he doesn't do it for acknowledgment. I think I'm going to do the work regardless. It's not about whether I can support for the National Football League or the NFL V8 or fans. I would do this work because I think that this is important. This is the legacy that I want to leave for my children. This is the work that I want my children to grow in. Does beach and plan to go back to Zambia? So the question is, do we take Ikea to make due to retirement trip? So we love to see anytime we make an investment so you want to see what does it look like over time. The Merits of "chevron Deference"
"Welcome back, America. I'm guilty here and thank you for joining me this morning. Now I'm about to talk about Chevron deference and my steeler fans friends think that means there's a line at the gas station like under Jimmy Carter. That's not what it is, but you need to understand Chevron deference and you and to understand why a new court filing in loper bright enterprises versus raimondo may finally lead to what we need in this country, which is a checking in of the administrative state. It's been filed by the former solicitor general of the United States. Paul Clement, who joins me now. General Clement, welcome to the Hugh Hewitt show. Great to talk to you. It's great to be with you. You know, I'm very happy to talk about that. You are a friend of Carol plant lebao and she'd been telling me for years. How can you not know Paul Clement? You know, ruxley, you know, Ted Olson, you knew chuck Cooper and, you know, ten stars. I just never run across and he's too young. So am I correct you've argued more than a hundred Supreme Court's arguments thus far? That's right here. I have argued more than a hundred cases, quite amazing to me. That is so fabulous. And I have personally recommended this man to people when they are looking for Supreme Court litigators because you don't want to send in the local council actually to target before the Supreme Court. This case of loper bright though, caught my eye, Paul Clement, because I teach con law and I try and explain Chevron deference and even law students eyes glaze over, but it can't be an issue for the administrative conference. It can't be an issue for administrative lawyers and professors. It matters to every small business in American carrying great burdens of regulation. Will you explain what Chevron deference is and then what loper bright is going to try and do I delight it to. So the thing about Chevron at least that makes me so kind of concerned about it is you and I have a lawsuit and we disagree about the meaning of a statute. The court is ultimately going to have to figure out which one of us is right. And there's no tie breaker. They have to do all the work and they have to get to a point where they just give their best impression as to what the statute means. But if instead of having a legal dispute with you, I have a legal dispute with a federal government agency, then instead of the courts having to get the statute just right. And figure out what's the best reading of the statute. They essentially get to look at it and unless the statute is clearly in my favor. Then basically the courts will defer to the government.

Steelers beat Browns 28-14 but miss out on playoffs
"The Steelers finished off their strong second half beating the browns 28 to 14. NFL players, communities rally for Bills safety Damar Hamlin
"Hamblin is from Pittsburgh. He first met steelers coach Mike Tomlin when he was 12. They got a lot of love for that young man. We lifted here him and that organization up in prayer. Fans have gathered outside university of Cincinnati medical center. Bills fans and Bengals fans, like Billy Jefferson. People like Kristen wooten gathered to pray for the healing of demar Hamlin's hearts. I don't know if what I'm going to say is going to make a difference, but I'm going to give it all I've got. Steelers Hall of Fame running back Franco Harris dies at 72
"A tough day for Pittsburgh Steelers, Hall of Fame running back Franco Harris passed away overnight at age 72. His son DACA confirmed that the news to the AP this morning and no cause of death given, but really the timing sort of ironic in the sense that the team is set to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the immaculate reception this weekend while also retiring his number 32. The immaculate reception may be the most famous play in football history where he caught an improbable past reigning it in for a touchdown that sort of kick started what became the dynasty that the Pittsburgh Steelers established in the 1970s. Highlights of Sunday's action in the NFL's Week 15
"Week 15, NFL roundup. I'm Ben Thomas, Sunday's action saw two more overtime games, but neither qualifies as the wildest finish of the weekend. That was in Las Vegas, with the Raiders beat the Patriots. Ryan lyong explains how. The Raiders scored on a crazy play as time expired to beat the Patriots 30 to 24 with three seconds remaining in the fourth quarter and the game tied the Patriots tried to extend a 23 yard run by ramonda Stevenson, but a second lateral by Jacoby Myers was fumbled and recovered by the Raiders Chandler Jones who ran it back 48 yards for the game winning touchdown. At first I was thinking who's around me. And I felt myself stumbled a little bit after the stiff arm. And that was thinking, who do I pitch it to that? I was just trying to, you know, keep the ball alive. It's when I stayed up, I just turned the jets on and the rest was history. Derek Carr was 20 of 38 for 231 yards and three touchdowns. The Bengals Buccaneers game in Tampa matched two division leaders led by two marquee quarterbacks, Tom Brady and Joe burrow. Early on, this was dominated by Brady and the bucks who jumped out to a 17 and nothing lead, but as Bengals wide receiver Tyler Boyd said, his team didn't panic and capitalized on four Tampa turnovers. When we create them, turn those, we got to go get them touchdowns, and not three. So I think the turning point was the offense rallying off the defense and making those turnovers into touchdowns. Boyd caught one of Joe burrow's four touchdown passes as the Bengals scored 34 consecutive points, cruising to a 34 23 win. Eric waddell, Tampa. Now one of the games that went to OT, Denny cap. Hair is still a punk and he did a it was three keys to victory for the steelers so this is kind of kind of part of this as well but i was watching some of those clips last year and my goodness i was watched the offensive line. And it's at the snap of the ball. They had such a big backtrack. They were just getting. i mean. Just bull rushed. Ben rothlisberger catch. Snap throw the ball because the guys were right there. It's like they did did nothing but just give ground give ground and not be physical at all. I'm hoping that's not the case anymore. But when. I said that they're allowed to give up one second. I'll say that's okay. That's because buffalo last year when they got two or more sacks in a game they were eleven in one there are eleven and one last year so those are some things that offense needs to do get ninety yards rushing. Don't turn the ball over and make sure you're protecting ben rothlisberger everything else. It would be great but it wasn't enough of a correlation to say they. "Like i said all they need is one more point than their opponent but what are some things they can do to help. Get there so we're going to look at first. We'll look at that. We'll look at the offense and what i basically was. I looked at twenty twenty trends for both the steelers and the bills. Say if your odds are gonna increase for success if you can do this so let let's kick it off here you go. Let's look at the steelers. let's look rushing yards. I'm gonna give you a number and you're going to be like really. That's all and then i'm going to remind you why now disclaimer. I didn't do passing your words or passing attempts. I did at least two rushing yards because we have to remember the steelers offense although they still have some similar terminology. It's a new offense. It's new offensive coordinator and hopefully more than anything. It's a new offensive philosophy that's ultimately what we want to see steeler fans because that was what was frustrating at times in twenty twenty so this one is a little bit tough it might not fit as much. But i'm going to do this. One based on twenty twenty because the numbers were neat. How about the number of ninety if the steelers can rush for ninety yards or more in this game it will help. Increase their odds of being victorious. Now part of that is that doesn't just been gone. Just run run. Run run run. You want to run effectively but if they get that number it's probably because they're still in a game it's close enough that they can keep running the ball if you if that makes sense to you but your prostate. Why did you come up with a number of ninety in twenty twenty when the steelers rushed for ninety yards or more they were seven no seven times. They rushed the ball ninety yards or more they were seven and oh so and this included the postseason. So if you're looking at a total of seventeen games that means in the other ted that the steelers were five and five ultimately so you're saying wow they were five hundred if they were under ninety yards but they won every game where they went any. Yeah doesn't mean that'll hold true to twenty twenty one but it's a number to start with to say. Hey get that ninety yards rushing and you might have a better chance to win this game okay. So that's one okay. Here's another one. Here's zero zero turnovers for the steelers. I'm not even talking about yet. Turnover margin we'll get there but let's just as the number zero zero turnovers because when you look at that turnover margin okay. Buffalo was six last year when they had a positive turnover margin. Okay if the steelers turn the ball over at all did can't have a positive turnover margin. The best you can do is even so if you hold onto the ball. Then you're taking that a big thing from there away from them the steelers when they had zero turnovers or or was more or less or if they had a turnover margin of zero or more were eleven one k. There are eleven when they were one in four with a negative turnover margin and the only the only game that was was against tennessee. They were i think minus three and they still managed to plus that game which was in tennessee which was crazy so the point is you can't have a negative turnover margin if you don't turn the ball over at all so if the offense takes care of the ball and doesn't have any turnovers you've already done your part so then it's on the defense to to get take away so then you're getting into that positive in that positive turnover margin area area. "The steelers inside linebacker. They signed in free agency in two thousand. Eighteen was named john bostick. His first year cap was under seven hundred thousand dollars. He was cheap. The highest first year cap hit for two thousand inside linebacker. Free agent was six million dollars. I went through. It looked at the two thousand eighteen contracts in their first year. Hits for that fifteen million dollars. The steelers could assigned any inside linebacker. Running back and safety. They wanted and their cap. It would have been less than they paid to not have levy on the field though restate that they could have signed any inside linebacker safety and running back free agent that season and the cap hit in two thousand eighteen would have been lower than what the steelers paid to play. Hard ball with le vian bell if they do this with. Tj why and tj white says. Look i already showed you. I'm not playing this game right. You're gonna pay me and i'll be the best. I'll be the ideal player. i'll be the ideal teammate. I'll be everything you want me to be. But you're going to pay me what i want. And they say no. We're going to franchise tag you in tj watson. I'm gonna sit out then. I'm not gonna play not okay. You're two thousand twenty two. The projected cap it for outside linebacker. Which is for. But there's a lot of great high end free agents available in november no one size too high priority free agents in november when that money from levian bell came off the books in twenty nineteen. The steelers won out and they signed steven nelson. They signed mark barron. Both those players played a role in the steelers solving the problems. They had the year before in two thousand eighteen. The steelers were one of the worst teams defending titans in two thousand nineteen. They were one of the best complete flip they signed. They drafted devon bush. That played a pretty good role labor and they signed mark baron. That played a pretty good role to they had steven nelson other receivers didn't need as much help make of. It's patrick played a role in that but mostly it was the guys covering the tight ends which vault mark barron he did that. A lot though signings signings like that occur when you have cap space. We've seen the steelers us cap space. Well in twenty twenty one. Twenty twenty two tj. Let's no. i'm not playing on this franchise tag and the steelers say we're tagging you anyways. The steelers aren't going to be able to replace teachers. They're going to tie up so much. Money in tj y and get nothing for it except a rollover for the next season that they can use to again spend a whole bunch of money out of their cap to simply play hardball with tj. Meanwhile if you know this ben rothlisberger might be gone. Tj tj want to sit out this year that would actually be less bad for the steelers enfranchise tagging him like how. How far does this go. Everyone everyone talks. Tj white has no choice but just to play for the next three years in the steelers have control over how much he gets paid with the franchise tag and with this year option. But when you sit and you have a large chunk of your salary cap with no productivity out of that money even if you don't actually spend the money and you get that cap hit back at the end of the year. You're still not getting anything for that. You're not getting the production now. Furthermore if you play hardball. Tj wide like bell. You're going to get a reputation in on the steelers right. You're gonna get a hit on the steelers you're going gonna take that shot and you right now. The steelers are team are free agents talk about. Oh i'd love to play for the ceiling. I love to play for my tom. I love to play for that team will. Yeah part of the reason is they wanna play with a guy like tj. Why and part of that. Reason is the steelers have a reputation of tree their players. Pretty well they can look at the contract. We offered levian bell and look at what he signed a new jersey as they do. You didn't really do that much better. Overall if you had played well you would have been better off. Being in pittsburgh. Levy on bell sat out a year came back and was terrible. And you know what he got. More guaranteed money from the new york jets than the steelers offered him more guaranteed money he would have needed to play two seasons with pittsburgh and as bad as he played in the new york jets. If you've played that badly in pittsburgh he might he might not have made more playing on the pittsburgh steelers contracts that they offered him the what the jets had to pay him is by the fact that he he was barely worth anything. All three of those players were used to cover receivers in the slot in two thousand twenty today. We're going to talk about slot. Defense specifically the players and strategies the steelers commonly used to defend them. And then we'll take a look at the players at the steelers are likely to use in two thousand twenty one to defend one of the most valuable roles in the nfl offense. I'm your host jeffrey benedict. Welcome to the cutting room floor. This past friday the steelers played their last preseason game and the only thing that remains of the twenty twenty one off season is a few practices and then the final cut down to the fifty three man roster. Almost all of the starting positions are have been taken. Almost every roster battle has been resolved with one major exception. And that is the nickelback before we get into to foreign nickelback. Bring i'm talking about what a nickel is some. Some people may find this interesting. Other people are going to be like. Why are you talking about this. But i just want to really quickly cover the history of the nickelback because i think it makes a lot of sense and it really helps inform what the steelers want in this position and the people that they choose to play if you look at a nickel package even steelers who run a traditional who traditionally run a three four defense with three defensive lineman and four linebackers when they do a seven man defensive front when they switched to the nickle package and six man defensive front. They put four men on the defensive line with two linebackers. That's because the modern nickel defense is based off of the four three defense. It is not a three four style of defense. You may hear. Some people will talk about the three three defense. Where instead of going to form and defensive line in two linebackers you keep the three-man defensive line and do three linebackers behind them which people have constantly and continuously touted as something. The steelers could play for their nickle package because it is a three man front much like you know the steelers reform package but the steelers go to a four two when they go to nickel and that's the basis of the nickel if you go back in time to the steel curtain when the steelers ran a four three defense and you take their linebackers back when they had. Let's say andy russell. Jack lambert and jack ham. If jack was on was assigned to cover a running back or tight end and that player that he was assigned to cover moved. Off the line of scrimmage and out towards the wide receiver right. If he moved out there jackass just move out and cover him. And if you take if you can take that in your head and get the idea of it and you see how you know andy russell jack lambert would have kinda slid over to cover the fact that only two linebackers were in the box. Now you have a modern day nickel packet. Basically what happened is teams. That could not could not put a linebacker outside of the box and put them in coverage like the steelers could with jack ham. Or even in the andy russell and jack lambert they could do with any of their linebackers. Back then teams. That couldn't do that. Would have would have a mismatch if i can take a player and send him out there and your linebacker has to cover him out there..

Nfl network and when it comes to the steelers overall. I just feel that sense the you know throughout the summer. I feel that this team has gotten better with the moves that they have made. And that's just really encouraging. Because a lot of times you get the training camps. Something bad happens you know Catastrophes happened in the first couple practices. If you know what i mean. The steelers haven't had that and they've been adding players through moves. So i feel like this team is is even better now than what i thought. It was going to be six weeks yet. Just so you're aware like there are some times where these preseason games. They'll split it not do half one half like the steelers broadcast in one. Half the detroit. I'm not sure of yeah. "Linebackers aren't put in as much of a tough situation so we can get a better gauge on. How much devin. Bush is ready to go for the season. What the steelers have in their new middle linebacker. Joe schubert would love to see. What would you get there. And is roberts lane much better off in that reserve role that can come in and if that's just better suited for him so those are some numbers and things to look for. So i wanna see the steelers. I want to see them. Get first downs in the first quarter. I wanna see them. Put points of the board in the first quarter. And i would also like to the steelers to get off the field in the first quarter on defense. The the third down conversion third-down rates conversion rate. Sorry be pretty low in the first quarter but even in the first half. I'd like to see the steelers win the first half and not just dominate the second half like they did last week. So that's what the numbers i'm looking for. I'm hopefully that was fun and informative for you. All i'm sorry if i was just regurgitating a lot of stats but my goodness. That's an awful lot to take in from this game this past week. It was absolutely crazy that the you know. The steelers gave up no first downs. In the second half didn't give a third dot conversion the entire game had a crazy time of possession advantage and completely dominated that part of the game. I would just like to see the steelers. "The steelers second team players. If you think about it like the eagles defensive line they want series. That's what they got. The the eagles offense like with their with their young quarterback jalen hurts. He had two series Things like that so the steelers even had their. They're more starting caliber players out there a little bit longer but it was in that first half and that's where the steelers were not well. Let's just say they didn't win the game in the first half so that's something this week i would like to see. I wanna see the steelers win the first half hour him. Go out there with with the players that are going to be out there. Their best offense their best defense. I don't wanna see when the first half. I wanna see it when the first quarter. I don't know how many of these players are gonna play beyond the first. I'd like to see him get a little bit. I just don't know but let's see the steelers get going early. I talked about this with my brother on the scarborough show that. How much time is ben. Rothlisberger gonna play. And i think it's more about the number snaps than it is the number series. Because if he if he has a fifteen play series in the first quarter and goes down scores touchdown that might be it because the number snaps if they have you know a three out that another drive that after one first down stalls you might seem out there for a third series just to get the number of place. I'm hoping it's less series. I really am. Because i want to see the steelers. Do well in those series. I want to see the steelers win. The first half the i am fine with them winning the second half because what that's showing is some of these things that we were concerned about. The steelers might have more depth than what we realized it could like. Is it that their depth. That good is it that the these players have been coached up better things like that. Who cares i mean. It's nice to know these answers. But ultimately they're still good things for the steelers. I mean the fact that they're out there looking at the. Pf grades just you know. Lafayette pits played seven snaps. He played seven snaps on defense but he had a score of ninety seven point two which which was absolutely crazy. If you think about that. I would like to see a bigger sample size but really don't because i love the fact that the defense is getting off the field you know you also have to look at how. The steelers played out their offensive line. The last game they had rashad coward out there for the first fifteen snaps. And then kevin dotson for the next fifty That's going to be switched now. I mean i don't think there's any way they can deny kevin dotson run with the ones and the steelers. This week finally had the five players. Who many believe are lined up to be the starters for week one of the regular season together for the first time in training camp. This week those players are just in case. There's any question. Chew chor. Four kevin dotson kevin greene trae turner and zach banner. Those are the those are the five you're looking at but the fact that you're getting great play from someone like dan moore junior. You're actually getting improved play from jc hassen. Our you're getting quality play from. I think i've really have to say. Chaz green has been someone that has really surprised me is when he was out there playing tackle that he's giving some some still some statute that wasn't that great but a lot of good quality play..

In the second half of the cowboys game in the in the hall of fame gave the steelers punted twice again but the cowboys punted three times in the second half when they didn't put it on the first half when you're looking at the eagles game by goodness the steelers did not punt in the second half. Let's not get in the second half stuff. Let's get to the first half stuff. I i mean they were close. In first nouns. The steelers head nine to the eagles ten in the first half the score was sixteen seven and the steelers did not score. They're seven points until just inside the two minute warning so it's kind of like they really didn't get going to actually have stuff on the scoreboard. Now if you've gone back and watch the game over and over again i've twenty. I've watched it through again. One time but i feel like i watched it over because i was watching each plight four or five times before i went to the next one so i feel like i've watched it over over five times again. It just was all at one time. You could definitely see that the steelers were right. On the verge. Bright on the verge of being able to to really extend those drives in the first half in just a couple of things between i mean penalties a negative play on an end around things things of that nature than putting four times so the first downs that were closed with the steelers and eagles ten. I'd already said but the eagles their ten first downs they were all passing no rushing. Let's just interesting and none on penalties. Either the steelers only twenty percent on third down conversions. They wanna five but the eagles were. Oh a five. No third down conversions. The first half. And we'll find out third down conversions period for the game the total yards..

"But i could be guy that steps up in In the future a couple years down the road he sounds like he is a good developmental piece. That has started off on the right foot. Which once again positive things about. This draft class is huge. The steelers six round. Pick quincy rochet once again. A lot of people the opposite of isaiah louder milk roche as someone who goes to the second round but slipped all the way till the back half of the sixth round. The steelers were able to scoop them up at their edge depth and he will compete with caches marsh to be the pittsburgh steelers fourth outside linebacker. The could potentially carry five outside guys And include martian that lineup. But if rochet to pass marsh on the depth chart they might even just roll in the season with four guys Once again once they signed. Melvin ingram de chance of any sort of playing time For marsh or rochet slipped significantly Really because now. Those depth issues had been solved. But both those guys have mentioned specifically the rookie. Rochet will be asked to do some things on special teams. There's no problems with that. And rochet has the ability to kind of bulk up now develop his run stuffing ability and kind of just round out his game. We know he's a good pass rusher but once again he is one of those guys that could struggle against the running college. Nfl tackles are only going to be better than that so having rochet being able to sit behind will really arguably the best edge rusher in football and teacher what a developing guy alex highsmith and one of the bed. Best edge rushers. The nfl is seen the last ten years in. Melvin ingram. he's only going to learn from some of the best in the game and he will get to learn and develop under those guys for at least a year before moving up the depth chart and perhaps being the the steelers third outside linebacker himself in twenty twenty two after quincy rochet. The steelers went with trae norwood with their first seventh round pick. He looks like he's fighting to be one of the steelers backup safeties. There was some rumors that he might be involved in that. Nickel cornerback competition. Sure things change but right now that nickel cornerback spot. It's of highlighted by antoine brooks junior. Who's been making a ton of place throughout camp. And then arthur mullet behind him What should be a spirited contest to see who lands that job both those guys by all means have been reportedly having a nice little offseason for themselves getting orthopedic busting their pots and could be some big time players for the steelers but for traynor would he will be competing really to be the backup behind me fitzpatrick and if he can not pan out like the way mike tomlin was obviously hired him after draft then he could be guy that to place a decent amount of special teams and could offer the steelers safety couple of stops off here and there because we know make fitzpatrick is a guy that's been playing one hundred percent of the snaps and really just been kind of pretty much staying. Strictly that free safety spot the steelers might be able to let me play a little bit more freely. If they had a talented free safety behind him that could allow me to move around. So maybe trade norwood could be that guy that a lot of steeler fans were hoping me cooker would be brought in to play that role specifically Hooker of course is rumored to have to be signing a deal with the dallas cowboys. Which at the time of this recording is not official yet the steelers other seventh round pick of course was big presley harvard in the third the massive punter out of georgia tech. He's still listed as the steelers. Backup punter and backup holder. There really isn't any issues with this. Of course the steelers are going to give pretty much. Every veteran the opportunity to keep their job. That's really how this team roles but you know this team has been frustrated with jordan berry in years past they try to replace him last year But there replacement dustin colquitt struggled himself which led to a jordan. Barry coming back out but joined bury struggles when the temperature turns. That's usually when he kind of d- flops the steelers might say if it's a neck and neck competition role of harvard in the third just because they don't know he's more of an unknown in those cold weather situations Where we know jordan berry has struggled in recent years. I wouldn't be surprised if harvard third wins a spot. Really if i was a betting man. I put my money on harvard third to be the guy. The steelers used their last draft pick on him for reason. And that is to be the guy to be the punter of the pittsburgh steelers not just here in twenty twenty one but for the foreseeable future so those are all the draft picks that the pittsburgh steelers made this year and really. There's nothing been nothing but positive stories coming out for all nine of those guys. We really haven't heard too much out of the undrafted guys. I know there are some high hopes on shaker brown and lamont wade amongst others but really nothing is kind of jumped off the page with them. Maybe that can turn once we hit. preseason action and those guys get a decent chunk of snaps for themselves as well as these rookies. We talked about because really once you stop the pads on and getting a gametime situ situations you're going to see the guys that step up and the guys that fade into the background so we will check back in with these rookies as time goes on.

Running backs really are pretty much as good as they're going to be from the secondly step onto an nfl field. There's a little room for development but given how short we all know that positions careers tend to be getting those guys in a primetime position as early as possible as huge and of course not nausea harris has grabbed the reins and has taken that lead back spot aside from that though the reports of nausea. Of course Those kind of highlighted Traits from najji harris have been talked about all offseason long. He was kind of the big name at otas and minicamp. Like i mentioned before so really. The reports aren't coming out as fast and furious as they once did. Because i guess at this point it's already discounted becoming common knowledge. That nause hairs is the guy that puts the work off the field and he certainly puts the work in on it as well. One of the other things that have stood up about campus kind of flipping through the steelers pitchers That they've been dropping each and every day of training camp. Algiers has been doing some crazy athletic things in the field. Like in stretch lines Pulling off a handstand which kind of popped the crowd that was in attendance for the steelers. First couple days there in heinz field. Of course they're not at latrobe the season but Was one of those things. That's just kind of catches your eye. This guy is a freak athlete. He's fast he's big. He's smart and he works his tail off. Najji harris is an exciting pick and the steelers are going to get a lot out of him very very early on in the process. The nets rookie. The steelers took in the next guy. a feature. Maybe getting the most love out of any pittsburgh steeler at training camp thus far that is big tight. End pat fryer m- youth the penn state alum has been making a lot of quote unquote spectacular catches at training camp coming down with one hand snags toe-tapping his way into the end zone catching everything in the individual in one on one drills. These reports are extremely exciting. I believe it was albert breer of course. nfl network. Who said he's been farm youth. That is has been putting himself in a position to steal a spot right away and be a big time contributor for this team once again. This is huge. We know the steelers already have air hebron on the roster and a plethora of receivers that have a ton of ability but adding just another name to that mix man it makes us dealers poem it makes that offense efficient and they have a ton of places they can go with the football not to mention dodgy harris already who's going to take a huge amount of the carries pat farm. Youth is putting himself in a spot to be a big time. Contributor for the pittsburgh steelers here in year one. of course the pads haven't come on yet blocking will be huge because we know of course. "The annual hall of fame game the steelers ladies and gentlemen back to football and reports galore coming out of training camp which really highlights the topic of today's show. Basically speaking about the pittsburgh steelers rookies and how they're basically stealing the show at this year's training camp it is one of those really exciting things really to watch to see to listen to to read about like these guys have stepped up in a big way for this team and like i mentioned a few months ago. Back when team was Unfortunately having to cut players due to a drop salary cap. The steelers need their rookies to have a big year. They will go as far as this. Rookie class takes them. And right now. It sounds like that. Rookie class is shaping up. Just the early parts of this offseason. They are shaping up quite nicely so what that means for this team and really can take this position by position because we continue continuously here a good things really about this entire class. You'll remember the twenty twenty draft class every single member every single one of those big steelers made made the team and had some sort of impact by the end of the year whether a special teams whether it was a starting role the steelers got a lot out of their six picks of the twenty twenty class. Now here in twenty twenty one nine new members of the team and they are on track to have all those guys make the roster yet again. It really is exciting. One of the big things that happened this past weekend. It's kind of dropped their initial depth chart. Which of course doesn't mean too much One once you have to get through four preseason games and about six weeks of training camp before you hit week one. Things are fluid. Those jobs will swap around but there were some rookies vary higher in that depth chart very early including the first guy. Wanna talk about of course. First round pick nause harris. It was not really a up for too much debate amongst people At least the media types when watching the steelers minicamp and ota's nausea. Here's was the guy. Starting every single drill he was the guy getting the bulk of the carries the bulk of the wraps and once again it was kinda confirmed that he is the starting running back for the pittsburgh steelers on day one of training camp which is one hundred percent unheard of for this team..

"So we'll have to see with with what's going on at the cornerback position our quarterbacks going to be able to throw faster against the steelers in there for they're not going to get those sack and pressure numbers that they would otherwise i don't know but then you also bring back devon bush. I laid this out on a previous episode that when it came to the numb strictly with the numbers when it came to sacks the where the steeler saw the biggest drop off was after the loss of devon bush not not after losing my hidden not in games where they lost buddy pre but where you saw the biggest difference was not having devon bush now seven bush was always there with those other two. So it's just it is what it is but that's the numbers that's the number. So do i think the steelers could improve on their pressures and their sacks and they're and they're hurries and things like that. I think you're going to see higher numbers strictly because of the seventeen game schedule. But what's most important is that you look at those percentages. How're those percentages looking like that. Thirty five point one percent pressuring dad last year. They don't have to improve it. they don't have to go up. Five percent dated from twenty nine hundred. Twenty twenty if they just maintain that that would still be fantastic or even a slight improvement would be wonderful so to me. Looking at the steelers defense is looking at the strength of this team. And so many people were down on the steelers. And they talked about ben rothlisberger and i talked about the offensive line. That talk about this talk about that but really the big thing is the defense and the defense. Every lost that they had was a calculated loss. They knew they couldn't afford bud. Dupree and that's part of the reason why he drafted alex smith the year before and if alex smith wouldn't have had the season that he did last year they probably would've looked for ed rusher higher in this draft to help replace to pre the fact that they didn't tell you that they think that they have something in outside smith and the steelers could have signed mike hilton camp sudden and chose not to. They chose gamespot sutton over mike hilton. The steelers chose to make steven nelson a cap casualty. That's what that was the decision they made so they and they didn't go out and add anyone. Major i mean that like arthur millette in the mix is like one of the additions that they had came from another team but really they didn't go out and make any big splash moods which tells you. They're pretty happy with what they have in general. So i'm i'm still looking at this defense to lead the way for twenty twenty one and i'm really hoping that it's their pressure sacks all those things that they do with getting the quarterback whether they're having to do with the blitz or out the blitz i don't wanna see them having to blitz on every play in order to have any success But it does seem that when they do. They are getting some overall success. And that's what we want to see based on the numbers so those are my geeky numbers for you this week. I hope they weren't too geeky. "Morning. It's july it is july first. My goodness we are in the second. Half of twenty twenty one. We are right in the midst of summer. We are in the month when nfl training camp begins. Yes it is getting closer to that time that is ultimately what it comes down to seeing the pittsburgh steelers unfortunately not in latrobe but adds heinz field and summit the up mc release core sports complex for training camp as they prepare for the twenty twenty one season. That's what it really all comes down to. That's what this is all about I'm just happy to be here. We're gonna talk some numbers with. Yeah i'm a. I'm a little bit flustered and everything right now trying to squeeze stuff in because the next week i'm on vacation you'll think you'll still have a stat gate from me but i'm not going to be on any of the live youtube shows and i tell you there is so much work to be done the week before going on vacation. It's like it's like doing three weeks of work. And i'm not talking tse. I'm just talking about life in general of just trying to get everything done in order to then have a week to not have to do everything so it's kind of interesting how that all works out so coming at you with a couple of different topics. We'll see how deeply dive in everything kind of as we go along. I'm just gonna kinda let things flow a little bit but this the topic today is stems from a email conversation. I was having With someone by the name of mike. Smith i know that's very specific name. I don't know of too many. Mikes miss out actually had about eight but this is one particular steelers fan. Mike smith who said to me. Greetings from my greetings fellow number nerd and he went onto to say some stuff but he wanted to know about he was said he was thinking about the seventeenth game being added and of course you know they say where's it at what doesn't matter where the opponents added bottom line is. There's another game at the end of the season. Now on it's just. I mean they could've started earlier. You could say there's another game at the beginning but they're starting the nfl season that the same spot. They're going an extra week in january and he was. Mike was thinking about the late season collapses. That's happened with the steelers recently. And he was wondering if it was a pattern he wanted to know the steelers worse later in the season and by having an extra game. Is that actually going to be bad news for them. Because of wearing down at a team like the steelers are playing as well at the end of the season as they are at other points and honestly. I like to argue that sometimes. It's playing the best the beginning of the season so this is what we did. Mike and i were were conversing. He put together this fantastic graphic for me to us. We're going to talk about today. And then eventually. I'm going to do an article word. Includes this graphic. And here's what mike did. We're going to look at this. In order to try to draw some various conclusions. He went over the last ten years. He looked at data from the last ten years. The pittsburgh steelers record. He went week by week. The result of the game he color coded it he has winds are green and losses are. They're not directly read. They're more of an orange almost like a peach doesn't matter this podcast. You could save anyway. And of course he had their loan tie and blue and went through and looked out of the steelers do at various points of the season. And how was that. Been over the last ten years now before we get into that. I got into some very interesting discussions on the website this week about using data and i was someone was actually accusing. Bt of using twenty twenty data and it's not very good data because this team is so different. Well you know what data's any better you know coming from a numbers guy. What data would be better than twenty twenty if you if you're looking at. Let's say the offense you go twenty. Nineteen that doesn't give you very good data because almost the whole season was played without ben. Rothlisberger you go to the you go twenty eighteen. That doesn't give you very good data because by. Then you're you're it's too much roster turnover because yes you're not gonna have the same roster and yes you. You shouldn't just look at what happened here before. And tickets going to be the exact same thing because we all know. That's not the case. So i don't know what the gripe really was other than someone who just likes to complain for the sake of complaining if you know what i mean. We probably all know people like that that you know like an was even an article that i wrote. This whole discussion went down and it was about. Oh well you need to take this. Coun- that account. Oh well you didn't take this into account took eighth things into account and because they didn't take nine thing into account everything drop now. I mean there's various ways to look at stuff and my argument is when it when it comes to looking at past data and past years. This is just a good time to talk about this. When you look at data like this what that does is it gives you a baseline it gives you a starting point for example you wanna talk about. Let's see the steelers offense for twenty twenty one. Well look at the steelers offense in twenty twenty. And then you've got to look at what factors have changed to make you think that offense could go in one direction or the other and different factors are going to make it go in one direction the other and then you weigh those factors. For example. ben rothlisberger returned. some people. Think that's a good thing. People think that's a bad thing that's going to depend on how that weighs in into your factories ation. The steelers drafted a running back in the first round. Know for almost everyone. That's going to be factoring. In the positives of the steelers have basically completely revamped offensive line with only one starter returning and they're not even expected to start in the same position. That's got a factor in in the something. The steelers are playing different opponents this year although more than half their opponents of the same opponents from last year then if you really want to dive into it.

"How it goes. I have a list based on ninety man rosters. Okay so this is going to change. But we don't know the steelers roster yet of course we don't have their snaps that they're playing this year in order to do this snap way today. A h so the best i can do is tell you the average age of the ninety man roster and right now for the pittsburgh steelers their average age there ninety man roster is twenty five point four four the got to remember a lot of guys that aren't going to make that team are the younger guys. Guys that are trying to crack their way in the nfl and and catch on with the team. Things like that there could be. There's occasional older guy that just is going to get cut because they don't have it anymore but generally the average age is get dropped down during training camp because of somebody players there now if you want to know where this is this. The steelers were ranked twentieth opposite their the twentieth. Youngest team right now so that puts them asaba just making sure. I had my numbers right. Sorry for positive for a moment there that puts them eleventh. If you're looking for the older steam believe it or not right now the oldest team the houston. Texans the houston. Texans have that have that. Have the oldest age based on everything It goes houston san francisco arizona new england tampa baltimore buffalo tennessee chicago new york giants. And then the steelers who have the same two decimal places the same average age as both the washington football team and the detroit lions. So that's where they sit right now but that's gonna change but that's the best we can do based on the data right now so the number might look younger for the steelers but the fact that there eleven still has them in the top half. I think that's where you wanna be. They're getting right about where that is but really it comes down to play on the field if really it it it really does come down to that so i have one more thing i was gonna dive into since i have a a little bit of time to finish off the show and that was i was talking with senior editor jeff hartmann and say hey you know i like to do. For two thousand twenty. Now we're gonna look at two thousand. Nineteen two thousand nineteen now. So if you let's let's remember the steelers number from two thousand eighteen the steelers number not to that a shootout and twenty for two thousand twenty or twenty six point nine when they when you did it by the by the weighted by the snaps was twenty six point nine the year before. Two thousand nine hundred much lower. I still say. That's part of the ben rothlisberger factor. They were twenty six point. Four now i told you when you were just looking at the overall age that this was the youngest average age on pro football reference for the steelers since nineteen ninety-one was the case in two thousand nineteen but it comes the nfl. They weren't sixteenth. They are middle of the pack so even though it was young for the steelers now granted taking into account the the waiting at by the snaps. They were middle of the road.
