Southwest Airlines Pushes to Expand Amid Pandemic Pressures

"The pandemic has devastated demand for air travel in response. Many airlines have pulled back offering fewer flights cutting jobs and rewriting the route maps yet. During all of this upheaval one carrier stands out. Southwest airlines is taking aggressive steps to expand. It's a high stakes gamble but southwest is betting. It'll help the company emerged from the pandemic stronger than before. Let's take a look at the company. Strategy and wide sky competitor's talking with the journals ala's insider who covers the airline industry for us. Hi allison it's always good to have you here. Thanks for having me so. Allison we should be clear. Southwest is facing plenty of struggles revenue in the third. Quarter is down. It's burning cash and it still dealing with the seven. Three seven max which won't return to service for a while yet but at the same time it's adding cities like palm springs. California steamboat springs colorado. It's also moving into big airports like chicago. O'hare is well. how can this be. yes definitely. there's no airline that has really escaped. The devastating impact of the pandemic and south west is no exception on track to lose money this year. You know really for the first time in in other breaking a forty seven year streak. It's a huge deal for the company. And they're talking about and seriously considering furloughs also for the first time in their history so you know. This is really unprecedented for them. But the strategy of being opportunistic a downturn. That's not that's not unusual for them. That's something they've done time and again in the past in sort of how they've grown throughout their history so in some ways it's it's not surprising to see them doing that again. Okay let's get into specifics. What's the strategy. What opportunity does southwest see here how they explained it was that the way their network is now. They have multiple flights day all of these cities. And that's been you know offering. That kind of schedule is sort of a big advantage for them but now that demand is down so much they just don't need to be offering five six seven flights a day in some of these places so they it means they have extra planes in extra people they need to deploy somewhere else so they sort of looked all over the country in thought like work and we really quickly move. That would kind of help bring in revenue right away for us. And that's how they picked some of these new cities as you mentioned. Southwest may break its profitability streak yet. It does have a lot of things working in its favor. It has less debt and lower costs compared to its rivals southwest. It's hard to say. Any airline is well positioned right now but southwest came into this crisis with a lot of advantages and they had a lot less debt than some of their biggest rivals so even though they've taken on a lot of debt during the pandemic they still they still have more cash than debt which is pretty rare position to be in for an and that's something that sort of gives them a little bit of a cushion and a little bit of flexibility to try things or the rivals like spirit and allegiant watching they offer low fares and find opportunities at empty your airports and is this. A big risk for south west. I was definitely watching. United executive sort of said at o'hare you know. They said we have the high grounds and they're not too worried from from what they said. But you know there are so few people traveling right now in the recovery expected to be so rocky. I i really think airlines are just competing over every passenger one. Great example of that is how the big airlines like united and american delta. Have done away with cheney's or most domestic changes. Anyway you know. That was a huge selling point for south west for years. So that's something that's going to make the competition even more heated. So what could that mean for travelers more options more competitive fares. Yes i mean over the course of its history. Southwest going into a market often brought fares down significantly and sort of got new people brought new people into traveling and something that the department of transportation once called the southwest effect. So i always tends to increase competition and bring down fares when a new entrant jumps into a market alison insider covers the airline industry for the wall street journal. Allison thanks so

It's about as close to it but when I got into skiing years and years ago I I only skied once every couple of years now about downhill skiing. I really got into it. I mean I became obsessed with and eventually I ended up skiing with some friends friends much people in Colorado and so we're at steamboat springs Colorado and I went to one of the ski shops and they had all of these the skiwear skiwear and of course I've just I'm skiing and his blue jeans and a you know like sort of a jacket and you like an outfit. I saw this green sweater. Uh It was a turtleneck forest green sweater with for some reason and I guess great skiers through this it had really really really really big loose arms so if I put my arms out it was like I was bat like a flying squirrel just a battery of Flying Squirrel. And I don't know what got into me but I put that thing on and I went yes and I started wearing it like to work I off the slope and my arms would come out and people would look at it and go. What is what is what are you back? What is that what it was designed for to make you more aerodynamic? "Thanks to the addition of amazing Americans were my guest is an old friend of a friend is a guy that is in the state of Colorado from steamboat springs Colorado born with one army as a stop on the right and the as a form on the left yes he is well the best athletes believe or not in Colorado history's name is Tom self fall and Tom is a coach and teacher Eaglecrest high school these days we have a connection there as well and Tom thank you for taking the time and it we appreciate you being a studio today well it's an honor to be here and you know I enjoy sharing my story with the with you in the community and just that the notion what I've done and you know that I'm proud of my accomplishments and I enjoy working with other people to help them achieve their yeah when when people hear your story the first time in a and I told some people last couple days as can be talking you like what waiting he played basketball football he did this stuff with one arm how is that possible is the question and I'm sure you get that all the time don't you no the look at me now isn't getting older so you were a good athlete right but then you know to see me with with the just part of the right arm of the you know if it was just a a lot of practice and a lot of encouragement and support from family and teammates and coaches of that they wouldn't let me settle for our well we gave it a good try you know all the people that I that I talked to meet that are in your situation Jim Abbott spin on the show I say the same thing I had parents who just refused to to to baby me to to to to protect the comfort me threw me out there and just let me figure it out was that your situation yeah and I had I was the seventh of eight children so there was a lot of people to help practice and play catch on you know so athletic family all around but it was back in the day when the girls weren't playing sports so but my sisters were good athletes and could throw the ball and catch the ball in play with me is as well as my older brother Richard who was was kind of you know my idol growing up is about six years older than me and you know I grew up watching him play sports and I wanted to follow in his footsteps and so I just assumed it when it when I was old enough it was my turn steamboat springs Colorado we I know few athletes from their most of more skiers and their speech uppers isn't like that but what that won the case and certainly with you was no I didn't ski at all really growing up in you know in high school there back in those days we played basketball and our games are on Friday night and Saturday night so the last thing I wanted to do on a Sunday was to wake up and do anything let alone go skiing but it wasn't until I went away to college that I started skiing in steamboat now a lot of money yeah I have to lot of bodies that were ski jumpers and they were they were the crazy one now they were aggressive and like to have a lot of fun and one of the newest guys that I've met Todd Lodwick in Iran dot in the Colorado sports hall of fame together help of months ago yeah so a lot of great Nordic and alpine skiing history in a steamboat someone go back to your childhood just little bit now I know you told the story several times but was there of is is there a memory for you there is the first one is that you know what I am well different the rest these kids your member that moment growing up you know I wouldn't I used to wear a purse thesis no one of those with the metal hook on the end you know just kind of sand in Oldham my mother always says you know that I would know just discuss a well why did that happen to me now some people are going to have some some things they have to deal with that they need to overcome and you know it's gonna make you a stronger person and then when I was growing up we lived in the Loveland area north of Denver and so I came down to children's hospital for therapy and I can remember I was probably five or six years old you know doing my therapy and seen kids with no arms or maybe missing a leg or both known and I'd funny to think about it now but I remember playing kickball with kids with no legs really yeah and but they were they would hit it with their help they would hit it with their backside they would do whatever they needed to do to be out there and participating and competing and you know that's when I learned real early age that I really didn't have that but I'm that they made a huge impression on you yeah what one amazing impression that you know being born with only one hand no there it's definitely a challenge but you look around and there are people in similar situations worse situations one of your gas couple weeks ago with no full legs and he's out there competing yeah so yeah absolutely any Boeing growing up yeah no they would call me captain hook and you know tease me about you know having the only having one hand but I was fast enough to chase him down that the average just say Hey that's not right don't do that I heard you can run a little bit yeah because I was a reason did that you think that motivated you do you think that motivate use an athlete to to be better than you might normally be because you got the harassment of the bowling I think it made me work harder you know that I needed to master the skills and like a typical male I didn't ask for help you know I wanted to prove that I could do it on my own and no maybe now what in that merit maybe that's not a good thing to not ask for help but but you know growing up I I remember my dad my brothers my sisters with all gonna be working on a plane baseball or basketball and then when everybody else we kind of go in I'd stay out and work on the skills a little bit more on my own Jim Abbott told us that the the one kid he remembers giving him all kinds of trouble telling he couldn't play on this team because the only one hand and all that are now but he's no best friends with okay yeah yeah I don't know if you have any kind of a a relationship like that to some of those kids who grew up with not really anymore you know growing up you know in the steamboat area I moved in and was seventh grade and you know well let me back up we were in Craig for a couple weeks and I had made the seventh grade football team then my parents got transferred with the job about forty miles from Craig steamboat and I remember I was devastated and all my gosh I'm I made the team not I've gotta try again I've got to do it again because the the one thing I remember growing up that I didn't like was every time you know I would start a new grade the teacher would have me come up in the front of the room and have to explain you know why I was wearing my purse the service and you know so I didn't want to have to deal with that especially having to go to a new town and try to make the football team again but I was fortunate that the you know I made the team in steamboat and you know I got extra practice with the joker mono one of my buddies he was the quarterback and would not help me take passes and how to catch balls and hand off so it just took some extra time but I was fortunate that I really didn't you know I can they're a huge burden of being bullied it happened a couple times but then you know at recess I was one of the better kids on the I had to take my hook off though they they won't let me go out to recess with my hook really yeah inside that's why I quit wearing I quit wearing my purse thesis in third grade did you well because I'd I'd wear to school take it off for recess put it back on this was the good old days when you had three recess for whom you love but I was it was on and off on and off and so they got to the point where I just I'd rather not where Jim Jim Abbott has the same stories like I just threw it away yes tire I was tired of it your teacher now I'm guessing you're not asking those kinds of kids get up from the room and explain things if they don't want to like this morning we're introducing new student hello I would ask them to get up and talk about themselves a young man said he wasn't comfortable so okay so I read his information form it public speaking or just being in front of people it is difficult for people for whatever their situation and I'd rather not put somebody in a I gotcha in a difficult situation I'm in broadcasting for thirty years and I still get somebody at once what I guess is Tom salt all he is the one that the best athletes in Colorado history just inducted into Colorado at sports hall of fame and he's my guest he was born with one arm he's got to stop on the right and he's got a form on the left yet other things he has done a physically in athletics is just going to blow you away we're gonna talk about that when we come back with great back with amazing Americans Hey what's up its rally from the Kane show and I just took a little visit to the brand new were modeled Rockville dealership persons kia and they have hundreds of vehicles ready to go basically every single thing you could want they have right there on the lot and every new vehicle that you buy from hers and kia includes two years free maintenance the greatest thing about them too is that they've been around in business for sixty years so you can pretty much trust that they know what they're doing when it comes to sell you the car that you want and they're conveniently located just half a mile south of shady Grove metro recently I got to drive the new kia soul that thing drives like a dream the.

You know I mean it's just like every arc type of everybody that I went to high school with was represented in this show and yeah I felt like some of the people most people knew each other for a long time and that they had all these secrets about each other and that kind of stuff or many felt like maybe one or two recruiting new there was a couple in the show madison with the long blonde hair waving extensions and then Austin the tall guy why they had an incident that you're probably not aware of and that is the reason a lot of them think they're horrible. "Do you ever tell your clients to test drive their retirement lifestyle before they just jump into it? Not really. I don't know why I don't think of retirement those terms retirement being much more like a marathon. Now, I was across country runner. So maybe have a little bit of bias here. Now, many many many years ago, you're not gonna find me running through a forest these days. I was a long distance runner. So I wasn't very good at the one hundred yard dash. But if it was a ten mile race, I was going to be pretty hard to be. And so I think you train for that a little bit differently than a sprint or even a test drive into retirement is all about having a plan that's built for years and years and even decades. And so we don't need a test drive it because we can recognize in the here. And now what's going to happen? Can't we sure we know that the market is gonna have years of going up in years of going down. We know that inflation is going to happen. We know that you're gonna live potentially a long time or a short time. You're a live in perfect health. Your health is going to deteriorate, but we know all of the possibilities. The trick is setting up your assets. To deal with all of the unknowns moving forward. That's the whole idea of having a distribution plan, a retirement income plan, the ideas that we couldn't test drive it, even if our lives depended on it. Right. And I've told this story before I'm gonna tell it right now is of this trip that we made to Steamboat Springs. Colorado Steamboat Springs, Colorado, we flew into Denver, and we rented a car to Steamboat Springs. Now, I have no idea. I couldn't find it on a map. It is. So long ago. Because I couldn't see anything. I mean, have you ever been in a snow where you it's kind of like a fog, but there's no fog, it's just snow and flurries and everything but my dad was determined guy. "Do you ever tell your clients to test drive their retirement lifestyle before they just jump into it? Not really. I don't know why I don't think of retirement those terms of retirement being much more like a marathon. Now, I was a cross country runner. So maybe have a little bit of bias here. Now, many many many years ago, you're not gonna find me running through a forest these days. I was a long distance runner. So I wasn't very good at one hundred yard dash. But if it was a ten mile race, I was going to be pretty hard to be in. So I think you train for that a little bit differently than a sprint or even test-drive into retirement is all about having a plan that's built for years and years and even decades, and so we don't need to test drive it because we can recognize in the here. And now what's going to happen? Can't we sure right? We know that the market is gonna have years of going up in years of going down. We know that inflation is going to happen. We know that you're gonna live potentially a long time or a short time. You're a live in perfect health. Your health is going to deteriorate, but we know all of the possibilities. The trick is setting up your assets to deal with all of the unknowns moving forward. That's the whole idea of having a distribution plan, a retirement income plan, the ideas that we couldn't test drive it, even if our lives depended on it. Right. And I've told this story before I'm gonna tell it right now as of this trip that we made to Steamboat Springs, Colorado Steamboat Springs, Colorado, we flew into Denver, and we rented a car to Steamboat Springs. Now, I have no idea. I couldn't find it on a map that is so long ago because I couldn't see anything. I mean, have you ever been in snow where you it's kind of like a fog. There's no fog snow and flurries and everything but my dad was determined guy. Hard working guy indeterminate we were going to get to Steamboat Springs. So we're driving through the mountains. "To light the runway from flashing lights to you, name it just taking gas and put it down the center line and lightning just where they could get a bead on where they needed to come. I don't think any of them at NBC's back then. These, these were all techniques you guys were innovating that you came to us, you know, future special operations missions? Yeah. I mean, you know, a lot of the things that we came up, you know, eventually transitioned or you know, can't fall this as we went through our Pereira in, you know, and the to j. soccer Eero calling. And so that ended up being a very successful operation to my knowledge. I know Jerry Daniels came over and thanked personally. I think they, we probably they probably brought in its least two thousand maybe three thousand people that those three nights using, you know, for pretty much tree aircraft, you know, everything was done in dark in. So you know the end, you know, when sun. Started come up the boom, everybody put their head down. And then when darkest game started at all. Get. Mike, I, it came to me as a as I was listening. The mission I was thinking of in Cambodia was called the Fank, the Fank mission forces army, nationality come are calmer, which was to train Cambodians US special forces training Cambodians at the time. Okay. Thanks for that down. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, I was on the tip of my tongue. But I think we should probably we've it right about there and but I really, really want to have you on to do a part to Mike. So we can talk about everything that happened afterwards on getting into eagle cau- and and how you started to use those techniques you were just talking about and also the development of air force, special tactics, which I know you played a part in as well. Yeah, we can. Yeah. Next, I think CLYDE close out on the island. Yes. Like that. Talk about the fact relation of that we participate reference Vietnam and how we played a role in that, and then how we went from there to to Clark vase Philippines. And then how what initially is called project recognition and the formation of what we call brand x. and you know, actually, you know the the j. song, so calm here. Yeah. Yeah. No, I want to. I would love to get an all that with you if we do it now we're going to end up with like a three or four our podcast. So I think it would be better to kind of break it in half. Yeah. And so he kinda just take a look at that and listen to it. And if there's things you wanna, you know, rea- dress is the happy to and you know, sorry, I've kinda hit miss and kind of all over the battlespace. This is perfect. This. This. You're going in chronological order. So it's easy for people to follow along with as we as you know, you kind of talk about your personal experience and your story. I agree, which is kind of what we do with Mike Vining. Whose chronological. Yeah, and actually it'll be interesting because Mike, Mike's career overlaps with Mike findings career. Yeah. I feel like Mike Vining part one was Vietnam era, and then part two was mostly post Vietnam. And yeah, talking about desert one and also they were both both of you guys drifting. Grenada too. So that'll be interesting. Right? Yeah. Like you said, I mean, my tour duty up in while again, I was very porch in it was an honor and obviously be able to fall on so rapidly to get into the Thailand in participate in that really, really gave me what I call a hell toolbag that you know I carried on and took those experiences to implement and influence whatever you wanna call it. The transformation of my own career field and the stand up debt one make or now twenty four STS. So this sounds like to be continued. Sure. Yeah, just gimme so dates, and I'm probably going to spend a little time in Steamboat Springs Colorado. Then I mean, not a problem. It doesn't have to be next. Month, it could be November could be December, we'll we'll do it again. "To follow. Us on Twitter at dodger Dalia and on Facebook that after Dalia show so I don't know what's going on. Here But now, everybody's all freaking out about a bowl. And so we're hearing more and more Shall we say Stories. Kind of involving I don't know what to say here because computer, issues and no I'm not blaming. It on any there's a survey that I cannot get through while I'm trying to get. To the article, there we go There was A Bola scare on. A greyhound bus I believe this happened in Steamboat Springs Colorado And a greyhound bus passing through streets people springs had. To be quarantined because of any boulevard, riskier The Denver police department contacted route county sheriff's office at about two pm Sunday asking that the bus be stopped. Officials thought that there might have been a person on board Who had contact with the, Denver health patient who had been tested for the virus remember that the hospital had to kinda Shutdown temporarily because they were dealing with somebody who they thought I had A Bola and. Then they didn't so now they have A bus ride because they thought somebody had contact with the person that. Was at the hospital They said the man Who had become sick after returning from the Congo did later tests. Negatively for the virus They suspected that someone on the bus might have been. Exposed, so please stop the buzzer for McDonald's. And held it there for about fifteen minutes, yeah I know the big Macs turning. Fifty so hopefully somebody got a Big Mac coin and so they stopped for the McDonald's how did that for about fifteen minutes before determining That was. Not the bus Denver police we're looking for now Denver post reported that the patient I've been working as a medical missionary in the. Area of the Congo that recently had. An outbreak of evola So the mad at, some symptoms of the virus. Like fever muscle pain fatigue diarrhea vomiting stomach pain and unexplained hemorrhage so Denver health hospital had put them in isolation but then confirmatory test showed he did not have a Bulla Three members of. The ambulance crew Russell Hoss blessed the mandate isn't, fair condition but we still. Don't know what his symptoms are And what the or why his And so I would like to know what other. Hemorrhagic fever that could have been we called hemorrhagic fever when you hemorrhage or bleed Hemorrhaged more implies bleed to death Hemorrhaging. Like you really. Can't stop bleeding but a fever hemorrhagic fever is a disease where you, having, a fever, must leagues diarrhea vomiting stomach pain and you have. Bleeding from parts of your body So. Denver health as you know it was one of ten hospitals the US, that, have been, authorized by the city c. prevention to treat people Now if I were hospital I don't. Know, that's a good thing I. Mean let's let's let's talk honestly here. Let's not try. To be all PC When a law Spital. Is being, advertised and discussed in the media. As them having any bowl of patient It probably ruins business And many people who are able to talk. When the paramedics go what hospital would you? Like? To go to Well probably. Say not the hospital where there's an evil Ovations Now as a physician And? As, a radio doctor yes I would love there to be plenty of facilities out there that can hold and abortifacient, if I got, forbid get a bullet I will want to be at a facility that'll treat. Me so hands. Down we need, them but you know Denver health has been in the news now And this is worth talking about, and it has, been advertised as being one of ten hospitals in the US that can treat. People with bullet. They had this, one patient that might have had A Bola They're telling everybody don't worry. He didn't have it I wonder what that did for business And then thinking a couple steps ahead Are we going to be told very liberally That? Hospital has a current you've all the patient That hospital needs to run and, in order for them to take care of. Patients they need to make sure they're getting money and if other people do not want to go to, that Aspel or they want to be transported. Out it's not very easy. To get transferred out doesn't really happen that, easily but if people want to, leave leave AMA they. Could leave Bill the insurance then you lose funds so I'm dying to know what this last. Episode did from a. Monetary standpoint to the hospital I had. No idea the Denver health was one of them you know. What I remember there was one of. The Colorado I didn't? Know if that was it was that specific one? So what are we interesting? To see what happened Now I. Don't think anyone's gonna brag about it. May not be newsworthy people just care about the bullet nobody. Cares about the profit margins of a. Hospital that matters to? Your eye because our country is kind of big And we only have ten hospitals that. Take a bowl of Asians and I just have the feeling that we don't have a lot of. Hospitals out there raising their hands going I'll do it I'll do it over here pick me pick me pick me What advantage does the hospital have They offer quarantine. Capabilities for any bowl of. Patient they may get low press They may get the money of taking. Care of any evola patient If God. Forbid Bala does come to the, US and it spreads. Like wildfire then though they'll get pretty busy they'll get pretty busy but right now Not a. Lot of incentives And so what I would suggest if it's not already being done is any hospital, that does become an Ebola Ground I don't know one. Or two can't call ground zero ground zero would be wherever the started they get extra funding from the government They. Get a hell of a lot, of praise you know maybe a plaque Right, but you know Make sure we incentivize hospitals do this because one, in. Ten isn't enough My guess is Denver health is getting spanked a little bit because, of all those news that they took care of pay to the house had it Now the CDC praised now Vosper with Congo. For recently ending the ninth evil outbreak. That has occurred in the country since ninety. Six that outbreak resulted in fifty four cases and thirty three deaths it had started back in may eight it was officially declared over few, days ago Now remember this but back in two. Thousand fourteen there was a man who. Shouted on a metro bus in Los Angeles I have And I don't know what this doofus. Was doing But the threat force officials the quarantine the drivers And to take the bus out of service and underwent. Eight thorough scrub down according to a metro spokesperson this was back to those of, fourteen it cost taxpayers thousands, and thousands of dollars Now the LA county department vocab obviously thought was hooks But there was a. Multi agency response that had. To, be broadcast on television it added to extra scare And let you already as you know they have protocols the place to deal with dufuses like this but still this is going to cost a lot of money and what are we hear that we're kind. Of caught with their pants down and. We're not, prepared if something big happens, or comes, around the bend I really hope for thinking about this you know maybe that. Latest outbreak is you know Done with and you know I know they were talking about maybe there's a new strain and you have the sky Denver. As some weird hemorrhagic fever but just. Don't just, think concretely like okay Ebola, or no We really need to be prepared that some,.

"Actually pooped on this rug three days ago. Bentley ragged I'm on top of it. See, we replace it. You replace. It's good as new. So have you ever had to sell them that I'm not gonna use poop, but like maybe someone was murdered there or in does that make if someplace is considered haunted? Will some people pay a premium for that? It's a good question because in California, you have to publicly disclose that in New York City. You doubt if you've watched like American horror story like the first season haunted house one, they had talked about it all the time and he's watching those movies, New York City. You don't think just because there's just too much history here. I mean, you can't. So? How does died in every building in, New York City that's true but sometimes deaths are very. Very public and you can Google them and that that does affect a sale you know, there's functions way there's there's bad juju people get nervous so if I, want to sell. My apartment when it's time like your buildings new so no. One's died, there yet It's an. Old building, they redid it that they redid but I'm thinking about. You do right I love dislike you talked about your husband right being good with people yeah I love the ability. To meet new, people every day actually have. A rule that I started when. I first got into. The business and I said I'm not from New, York I'm not the smartest person ear I don't know everybody. I wasn't born into the wealth, of this city but I'm going to. Meet five new people every. Single day multiply that by three, sixty five the next ten years of my career that's. Like a billion people math was never really. My, thing and that's. How I'm going to grow my business in that's it's been an amazing thing for me like that's my work my work is. Getting to. Meet new people every? Day. And helping, them find homes like I could. Be. Painting fence in Colorado right now you. Said that twice no so I I'm sure that that is job no, I. Had that as a summer job I. Painted fence like ten miles worth offense every summer in Steamboat Springs Colorado, it'd. Greatest smokes on, pot offense down? I painted fence just by myself in. My own thoughts in that. Was yeah. It was. Like you know? What I'm not gonna do that ever again And what's the best advice, you. Ever received that you still.
