"I take a thousand medications. If you're watching on Fox nation, like what is he doing? I'm seriously ever since cancer crap I'm always saying freaking medications drive me crazy. All right, enough of that. Let's go to the phones. Let's take Rick Rick. Thanks a lot for holding. I appreciate it. What do you got for us today? Oh, thanks. Great show. My first comment is that if you want to get rid of corruption in voting, everybody uses social security numbers. You can leave once and once you're dead, they know it. Next, I want to know why banks are getting 5% on a house right now. And I'm getting a penny on a thousand. And finally, why hasn't gold gone to the moon with this inflation? Well, let me focus on you as a lot there, so let me answer your questions. First, the voting yeah, I support voter ID. We got that. You've heard that already. Second, because banks arbitrage. That's how they make that's how they make money. I'm not trying to be a wise ass. That's just how they make money. They arbitrage. Financial arbitrage. You make money on the interest rate disparities in your loan book. You lose money on a bad loan book where you've taken, you know, poor risk management procedures. I'm not saying it's right or wrong, you just asked how that's just how it is. It's not necessarily fair all the time, but that's the way it rolls. But your last part intrigues me the most. Why isn't gold at like $3000 an ounce right now? That's a darn good question. I think it's going there. I think it's going there rapidly. I think when the super bubble bursts and the dam bursts, I think inflation, when the expectations start to be mismanaged, I think you are going to see a massive influx into not just gold, but other metals too. But a good question. Three good questions, nice job. All right, let's go to Mike. Mike, you're on the dam on Geno show. What do you got for us? Hey, Dan, how you doing? Doing good. First thing I want to do is thank you for your prior and your continued services to our country. All the things that you've done and you keep us on our toes and I thank you so much for sure. Thank you. Second off, the first morning I heard you, I heard funk 49 in the background. Days later, I heard statesboro blues and would you really have me when you came up with freeway jam? Mike, I have to say, wait, wait, before I have to say that that's Jim. Producer Jim, I have to give credit where credit is due. I'm sorry, Mike. My producer, Mike, can you take his a number, Mike? I'm going to take your call next week. Well, I want to fit you in. I'm really sorry you didn't get to your point. But I got to give credit where that's Jim and Mike who put together the

But we've gotten to the part of the show where we have devoted some time for just the sickos. McGee, the college football sickos like you. And I want to start with just a team that you think can be this year's Cincinnati bearcats, right? Like a non power 5 conference that can actually just make the playoff. Is that even a thing that's plausible to you? You know, I feel like the best and worst thing that could have happened to those kind of rogue schools out there was that Cincinnati did what it did. Because now I feel like the committee is going to, no matter what anyone does, they'll go up, well, listen Cincinnati and where you guys want. You know, you had your deal. And but I'll tell you this. Watch BYU. They have a carefully crafted schedule. They have a really, really talented football team. That is a well coached football team. And they are intimidated by nothing. I still contend that one of the great aspects of 2020, we were robbed, because of COVID, was that schedule BYU had in 2020 with the current New York Jets quarterback at quarterback. That schedule was made for a playoff crasher team. And so keep an eye on those guys because if they win the games, if they went out, it's going to be really, really difficult to keep them out. I don't know that they can, but that's just that team is going to be fun to watch. So you refer to all of the chaos that the sport had gone through in 2020, even into last year. And it feels like reading how you have reported on this sport. It feels like there is at least one conference that you believe has preserved itself. That has remained traditionalist in a time of insane flux. So what conference do you love for that reason so much? The sun belt. Hashtag fun belt. Look at what those schools have done. And I'm very close to this because of the part of the country where I live, but if you look at what the sun belt has done and the teams that it has added and the games that it has created and a lot of times the games that has resurrected, there are rivalries in that conference, regional rivalries where fans can travel to other places and watch these games. There is no USC going to piscataway in this deal. You know, this is app state. Appalachian state going down to the beach to play coastal Carolina. And this is Marshall coming down out of the mountains of West Virginia to play Georgia southern and statesboro, and they've hated each other for 40 years. And might not be schools that you know a lot about if you're just a national, power 5, college football fan. But there's something to be said for hating your neighbor. And playing your neighbor. And kids that played high school ball against each other. And games that go back to the 30s and the 40s and the 50s back in the old NCAA one double-A days. So yeah, it's fun. Hate is fun in college football. And so when you have a chance to create that, and oh, by the way, you don't have to get on a plane and fly 6 hours. To play your games, I think they're never going to $9 billion TV deal on the sunbelt. But they are going to be entertaining on TV, and that's their whole goal. Yeah, Appalachian state, by the way. Shout out to them just because that was an appy state tailgate was the first and only time I've ever tried moonshine. And it was passed to me in a jar by a guy who in my memory, which is a mid broken, looked like an old prospector, but I've always had a fondness for the fun belt hashtag fun belt ever since then. No, that's it. And kid who were stadium, one of the most beautiful places to watch college football in the United States. And the fall when you hit the leaves just right. And by the way, don't call it Abby state when you're there. Just call it app state. If you call it a happy state, then some guy named pappy will slap you for calling it Abby. No, that guy. The prospector is going to come out and punch me in the face. That is absolutely news I could use, but okay. I want to go now to another far flung place on the college football map and this place is the last call at the bar for any Saturday evening of college football, McGee, and of course we are talking about the university of Hawaii and Timmy Chang, who is their goat, who is now their coach, who also holds just about every quarterback record that exists. And so for people who don't know his legend, what is the legend of Timmy Chang? I'll

"There are laws on the books. That are not being enforced. That's the bottom line. We are not enforcing our gun laws. And politicians keep talking about more gun laws. But we're not enforcing the ones we have plenty of gun laws. When we do these long-term operations, whether they're undercover or other types of operations and we're taking guns out of the hands of criminals, it has an impact. It has a huge impact that lasts that goes down the line and all these communities. And for whatever reason, we've stopped doing them. We're not doing them anymore. So the answer, my answer to your question is, it's immeasurable, you know, what we did, the impact that it has in the future of a community is huge. And I'll tell you, I don't know if I talked about this on the podcast last time, but I can tell you how I measured that. The storefront we did in statesboro, Georgia, which is a college town. I don't know the population, but it's not a big city. It's not big, not big at all. We took 265 guns, okay? Crime crime guns off the street in a 9 month operation. Two years later, the statesboro detective who worked that case with us called and he said, brother, I just want to tell you that our drug unit has nothing to do. Our gang not gang data like a gang slash gun and it's probably like two or three guys, very small department. Their stats are terrible. There's no one is selling guns. No one is selling drugs in our city. They're all afraid that it's either an informant or a fed, crime has gone down by 85%. Holy cow that's two years after our operation. So that's the kind of impact these operations can have. Granted, that's a small city, but if you do a bunch of them in a big city, they'll be the same kind of impact. So for whatever reason why they've stopped, they need to start up again. And it is preventative. Well, and the other thing too is, but they stopped the right, they don't do the UC. Not very much, no. It's like your UC courses and developing news turning agents into UCs was I think arguably one of the best in the whole government system, right? And they don't do that anymore. And it's just like, I'm amazed because here's a tool at their disposal that can actually have a real impact on crime. And that's what I wanted to ask you. Why because you mentioned it and it triggered it. Why did you call it state borough blues? We named that did a great almond almond brothers song states. Okay. Yeah, which was actually written by blind Willie mctell. From statesboro, Georgia, who was an old black blue sky. And the Allman brothers who were based out of Macon, Georgia. Covered it. Statesboro blues. And that's why we call this stage. Okay, I didn't know if there was a tie in to your operation there if it was that, but it was just more about the song, huh? Yeah, more about song. Well, look very cool. Yeah, you know, it's one of those things. I think it has an impact and look in this time right now. We have to put all options on the table and to me, a storefront operation that, like you say, and the other thing too, I love what you said, too. We'll finish up with this. It put it sewed the seeds of distrust in the minds of even the criminals because they didn't know who to trust anymore..

"Charles, the last time we were together in episode 29, guacamole is working your garden. We briefly discussed the citrus you're growing at your home in Savannah, Georgia. That fascinated me, and I had no clue that was even possible. Today I would like to talk about growing citrus in your home garden. When was citrus first grown in the United States? Craig citrus was first introduced in the U.S. and St. Augustine, Florida around 1565 by Spanish explorers. But we had a pretty big gap from that time period until the next real surge of citrus began which was in the 1700s first in Arizona and then in California. We really didn't begin citrus development in the Gulf Coast states in earnest until the 1940s, but unfortunately, we had a couple of decades following World War II where we had really hard winners and it just absolutely decimated citrus production in Florida. Remember in the 80s, I was on the white Orlando Florida for a football game, and I remember seeing miles and miles of dead citrus along the road. Where can centrist grow these days? They are developing citrus that can survive further north than that, just as a side note whenever I retired living in Atlanta in the first thing that I did was build myself a little greenhouse so that I could have a dwarf lemon tree in a dwarf lime tree. So I would simply wheel those into the greenhouse over the winter. And then take them out with a little two wheeled Dolly that I got at Home Depot. Every spring, but I had two citrus trees that produce very well in the Atlanta area, but now they will not winter over there. It's a little too coupe with the Georgia citrus initiative which has been spearheaded by UGA. They are developing more and more colder hard citrus that can be grown up into little above Charleston and we go west kind of across statesboro and below the make an area where we're still able to grow some citrus. But she also have to factor in a number of things when you start looking at citrus growing in those areas you've got to look at such things as site selection and we can get into that in a bit, it's important. We choose to plant it. Suffice it to say we are getting several different varieties of citrus and other fruit bearing trees. We're able to grow a little further north than we used to actually for two reasons. One, we've got some cold hardy rootstock at the other thing quite frankly is we are warming, you know, in Savannah, we're set to be an 8 B will really we're more of a good strong 9 or a now with the warming that we have had..

"The Aggies also unable to run the football effectively yesterday, so that's a big issue. The Aggies have major questions coming out of this game. They get the victory. But impossible to say This is a contender anymore. Without Haynes cake, It's got to be all defense. And try to piece together. An offence. Yesterday was a tough watch and finally back to the E in Miami. Appalachian State was battling Miami and how about this kickoff return? For the APP. State Mountaineers kickoff coming back to the Mountaineers after a field goal is Jalen Virgil takes it one yard deep in the end zone and hasn't seemed on the right sideline. Only the kicker to be he gets by under the 30 Virgil Foot race to the 10 to the five That's an APP state touchdown. Jalen Virgil Shades of Statesboro into Semb er. He puts the Mountaineers right back in front for the first time. 13 12 as Virgil in the blink of an eye shows off the speed and scores on the kick return. Now is midway through the second quarter and at state took the lead. 14 12 That's Adam Whitten on Appalachian State Sports Network at the end of the game at ST Hits a touchdown From about three yards out Chase. Bryce throws it into the end zone to Malik Williams, and that gives upstate 23 22 lead with five to play. The EU needs a game winning drive and then 43 yard field goal to take the win with two minutes to play. But remember, Miami got absolutely demolish last week by Alabama, and then it needed a late field goal to beat at state at home. Hurricanes team that again. Wants to prop itself up and say We're back in Manny Diaz bringing back the program. We're going to compete for the championship. "New mexico one hundred fifty one and unlv just tragedy to fifty to one. I think you start with boise state here. But i think you you'd be silly to to overlook san jose one hundred percents and i you know our gals again to the. They're always they always popped up. They do let us down. So i'm going to keep them off the car. But i think san jose state at eight to one. It struck me as an odd number. Why what about. What about the like. They're kobe what about i mean. Yeah i think you. Just if you're boise state it's hard not to see them winning this however if there was a surprise team what about air force kobi. What about in the triple option gives fits. They could. But i mean what i'm just looking at. Twenty twenty was clearly just the season from hell for air force but if they can get back to the two thousand nineteen four. I think them at twenty. Two one is kind of interesting. Yeah i any time. They've been the the kryptonite To boise over the past fifteen years But i'll say san jose state they avoid playing boise. So there's a good chance. Boise would have to win the mountain west championship at san jose state and i just think they're they brought by twenty starters. They have to physical running backs. Nick stark was in his thirty fifth year of college. So when you have that it's pretty good nucleus to To repeat it. They went undefeated in the in the mountain west last year i mean again. You can argue. San jose state has the best quarterback in the conference. I mean i think most people would argue. That nevada has a better quarterback. But i think again those bach meyer for awards. Even when you're taking a dog that happens to have a solid defense and the best quarterback maybe the best quarterback again eight to one delicious price corey. I'm with you good looking side of the table. The college experience was one of my lock. Oh of course you know. I listened to every single episode ongoing boise state as the lock but air force. Twenty one is tempting. Are you guys also including boise state. Or there's going to boise. San jose mix. Because i think that's going to be the mountain west championship. Yeah that would be You know what. Let's let's be fun. Let's throw a complete wildcard. I'll give me san jose state in wyoming miami just because they return the most production and all the college football. I think it's easy to pencil. Boise state in like we typically do and maybe someone knocks him off their black myers legit though. Nfc requires a great name all right former sun specialists myself current some belt specialists. We don't have a replacement yet. Louisiana is sitting at even money coastal plus two hundred app state plus four hundred troy twenty five to one georgia state. Arkansas state forty two one door georgia southern fifty to one and then we got texas state one hundred one south alabama one hundred fifty two one with you l. m. louisiana's the obvious choice. Yeah especially because that side of the division there's two divisions the that side of the divisions. Were you have all the shitty team. So they have like a cake. Walk to the Yeah they also get the play the They get a tune-up game against texas. That should be. Brad always helps. That's a nice warm basically enough. Yes matchup with sarko john. I think there's no value. I mean like i guess louisiana thinks definitely going to be in you can make the case coastal plus two hundred returning a bunch but they gotta go up to Win i mean. I'm i plus four hundred. I'm going app state That could be the case. I think georgia state returning twenty-one starters. I was gonna say we got to take a look at georgia state. Because it's forty two one see my only problem is they gave him a death. Blow like the battles for the sun belt gave them look at this three game stretch. You'd never hear of like in conference. Three straight away games at georgia southern at louisiana at coastal carolina teams in the so. I think you're you're plays actually georgia southern value plus five thousand fifty to one georgia triple. You're coming in heavy and hot on the triple option teams. We'll look last year. They played at louisiana louisiana. They actually were winning. Majority of that game. Louisiana made a fifty five field. A win. that thing that now louisiana's gotta come to paulson stadium. You look at their other series of games coastal carolina. They gotta come all the way to paul stadium and statesboro georgia. I like their schedule. They yes they have to win at app state but they did that two years ago. The triple option always gives teams fits. I think the value that makes the most sense because of the schedule because georgia state boy could be the best team in the conference coming back to state. Though i mean they seemed like a team that's just consistently are one at least nine games in every season since thousand fifteen don't you don't you appreciate that consistency. Colby do always an app state guy and it's scaring me that you're you're not buying into my app state. Well they please carolina on thursday shaun. And i can't you asking me to root for upstate this week. That's that's just not going to happen. But i'll say this. Yes but they've had three coaches in essentially three years. I think that takes a toll on a program they brought in chase. Bryce who was a duke transfer wasn't very good at duke. I have concerns at the quarterback spot everywhere else. I like what i see. But i just. The coach has gotten even even through those coaching changes. Nine games every year. Yeah well last year they think if you wa took that and that was the first year for sean clark took a step down now yes. They still played really good. They were in all those games. They lost that could be adjusted. That could be cova. D'you chalk it up to whatever East carolina beats them thursday. The sean thanks for asking what are you getting that money. Line at combing their ten and a half dog or ten and a half point..

I can't trust anyone in my life. Because i can't even trust the people around me. And then he tells me it's his birthday. And i remember thinking like it was his fortieth birthday. And he's confiding in me telling me how he can't trust anyone in his life and i'm thinking man. You picked the wrong person to confide into airplane. Picked the wrong day to quit sniffing glue right wrong and you start getting that sense of betrayal somewhat as reprehensible as he was it was still part about him. He gets human emotion right. And this was your first time was this. The first deployment of salman's the auto as a uc persona urge us that before i had been using that before. Yeah so he had kind of so this this thing you mentioned about this too because what i want to do now is move into kind of the higher level of some of your other store for an operations but the thing about this which i think cemented your reason for why you wanted to do storefronts. You did all of this work just to get one guy. It was like man that was a lot of effort for one guy. Yup and i could spend the same amount of time and ramp one hundred and one hundred guys who are really affecting the streets. Shoot trigger pullers. So it did really cement my my my feeling about these storefront operations in how how effective they were well. Let's talk about some of these because of operation thunderbolt operation pulaski. But i think the one that you did in statesboro georgia small little college city. This is one that kind of affected you personally because it affected again. It's another guy who said i trust you. You're the only in fact he said you're the only white guys i really like kinda and this was a kid named petey right so just kind of high level. Tell us about that that operation. How did you get the pd. And how did how did that affect you knowing that at some point in time this dudes going to jail so we opened up a again. We made it a little bit bigger and better than the previous one. This is our second one and It was a head shop in. It was actually located in a kind of strip mall where there was a big gold's gym and some things so it was kind of a tough location because so much public interaction..

"No doubt at that point. You were all yellow. that's going gonna be a classic story high five that's awful. That is so awful. I am just now sitting here going. What would after i swim. I don't take a shower. And i'm in bed going Chlorine all over right now just like where. Go from there back to his seat even think about any of that. I just thought the game was over. Oh my god dude i. I was in college like i. Just can't i'm like. I'm not comfortable no- trough guy in college. My buddy ricky is twenty. First birthday we go down to see him in statesboro georgia. He was going to I think southern georgia doesn't go anyways. And i go into the. It's at a club we go to a club and it's like southern dudes and i we're going this trough and there's this dude in front of me and he just announced this is so classic southern and probably anywhere but he announces to the room. Everybody could be a nervous about your dicks is just get it out and piss and every after every was just like. Yeah like this guy. I think this guy wants. I'll be the judge who should be nervous. I wanted guy. Step up to the trough and just record timing like and i get up there and i. It's too much. it's too community commute. I'm like i can't go so i do that thing. I've done this so many times in my life even recently when i recently the past year i've beat around anybody but Where i go all right. I'm and i have not gone just like i get me in a stall the stall and this is a bit but the stall is vip of. I get my own room. Yes i'm in here. Close the door yeah. I'm this is mine. When i'm at a concert or sporting event and i'm in the line and it's like all the urinals which is fine but if it times out that you're going to get a stall it's nice hot see i'm going in the stock and i tell you of my thoughts on stalls. I just honestly now is probably the only time to do that. The crazy thing is i guarantee you. We have many of these times. I don't think i. I don't think okay. Here's anything thing. I was it a check. I was at a cheesecake factory. Ok okay. I believe you and i and i used the handicapped stall okay. And sometimes i've been where everybody's waiting in. No one will go. Use the handicapped stall uh-huh and i try my theory on this is anyone can use the handicapped stall thing is is if there's a line and someone is handy typically needs all there automatically next for that one hundred million percent for always because more people i can't go in there and it's it's for incorrect and forgive me for anybody who says handicap is not a worship saying. I feel like maybe it's problem. I don't know a person with physical needs. Whatever that's it's not for you. And i'm like it's for all of us. Just means that if someone who specifically due to their limited challenges. Sorry if. I'm being problematic due to their challenges if they if they come in here they get it automatically. That's the rule. I never told anybody this. And i've felt it for as long as i've thought critical. I think someone is crazy to go. We can't use that stall no one can person needs that comes in and they'll be next. Yes that is that is one hundred and also it's like hey you can't go that stone use it because look this person ray. Of course right. You don't cut your next in line. You're cutting right. It's not for you right but if it's available and know that someone in line you then it's yours. I think that one hundred percent. Thank god anyways so you know so. I'm having trough problems in the van. And then i we drove for a loan to. I've never and i know this for a fact i have never held my peace for this long in my life at hurt. I was in pain. It's very. I was shifting constantly and when he finally pulled over to get gas. I was like get out of our to. We're doing a long time. It was a longtime of holding in like going and all i knew was like all right. Why do have this gatorade bottle so when it is happening when your body says we're taking over yeah. I go in and we stopped at a gas station. So you know there's limited and it's like the whole team. It's a few vans i can imagine. Can i have the key. Can you have to think going to do. I go straight to the door. Find out. I need a key or do i go to. The clerk asked about a key. I yeah because if i don't need the key i'm going to be the team is who's lining up and i cut it and i i don't care i don't care and i peed for so long and like yes yes. I don't know if this is true for women but when you hold it for so long when you do finally have to go and you start to go. There is a split second of pain. Because it's like so much build up pressure. Yes i imagine. It's probably true for about. But i only know for for me actually. I don't even know if that's true for true. Giving the thumbs up this is true but that was my most like aggressive so it was painful. It's not necessarily similar to this but but that's my story that pops and i'm not good at recalling stories as you all know but as soon as i read the title i even thought about when i think of the word pm time in the van immediately drawn to if you if they had pulled over. Would you been able to go in the ditch. Yes would you be able to go it. Well you wouldn't need the won't you wouldn't need the gate arraigned bottles. Yes but i would have. I would have been able to do both of those. It was just in that it was just like we're in this for and also you're like slightly moving because we've answer you're like i can't just settle no and then go. You need to relax your hips. I have to relax. I have to settle. And then i'm there and ready to go and i was not able to get to that space in that van wall. You know what. I was a pretty good player on that team. I'm not saying status. Should have caused them to pull over. But it's like you know maybe games miss a few games remember. Somebody asked bill parsoes. Do you coach all your players. The same he said hell no. Some players deserve better treatment than other players roar. I'm not saying that was me but no i. Do you know what. I was pretty good. I don't remember having a most dire need situation. I tell you this after. I watched that guy swim through the trough. I did not need to be changed her life forever. You knew the you knew in that moment. You're like. I'm going to whatever job i get. I'm gonna be fine. I'll take this one because you twenty three were you. Were you in the agency. then you in the bureau. A retired already retired so at twenty three already. Been through it me and jack village. That's insane daniel. I'm gonna tell you right now. If you ever see a guy p lottery off out of people tell you. Oh i as an insult. Bill say i bet he sits when he piece one. Oh some it's fun to do always when. Up take a break. I am a firm believer that we in this country should not if we're conservative. Abandon our ideology. But i also believe we should not abandon our friendships with people different. That us who see the world differently than us who have different policies than us one on both sides of the aisle republican democrat alike. It doesn't matter which party are. Part of a witch ideology is it is an increasingly common phenomenon. These days to decide that the people on the other side are evil not just wrong but bad and evil and each of us has there are old shibboleth for judging that whether it's the other side supports abortion or or they don't support massive social welfare programs. They want the poor to die. That's the left wing critique of conservatives these days both sides see the other side is evil. Both sides believed themselves morally superior. We're all fallen. We all like sheep have gone astray. And we're all getting through this world together whether you like it or not and i am a passionate conservative. I believe that the government does too much and should do far less. I believe that the role of government should be to allow individuals to thrive in that means getting out of the way ensuring a fair marketplace. It does not mean putting everyone on social safety welfare and where they get punished. They get successful. It does not mean. Let's give everybody health insurance so they can live out their dreams. I've never supported it Even before i was on talk radio you go back to what i was writing red-state And peach put it back in two thousand five thousand six. I was opposed to no excuse after devoted. Then i've never liked it. I think that everyone should have to vote on election day. Unless you have a real excuse but i do understand the speakers objections Yeah i mean he. And i don't get along but this is. This is not me beating up the speaker. He has legitimate points about early about the early voting. Absentee voting that typically Business people who tend to vote republican tin to prefer early voting and absentee voting. So that they're not bound on a particular day of the week. They can do it on their schedule. And they can get their vote cast and he is afraid that good people a lot of republicans in north georgia. We'll simply not vote if you can't get them absentee ballots if they don't want to lie and they're not gonna lie so they they need no excuse after voting and so i think he is also along with the governor pushing for some way to tie due to the belts and i think that's an acceptable compromise and i think they've got to do something like this if they can move forward One of the other issues is expanding. The opportunity scholarship in schools if they can expand the opportunity scholarship program and get more poor kids into private schools with government funding. Then it makes it harder for democrats to take that away. I we've got so whereabouts. Pick up four stations in southeast georgia and those stations We'll be putting us in place of russia's show and from the noontime our and so they'll be running a little bit. Whispers of trouble - listen to your plane
"If airplanes could talk what would they say? Well, they can talk if we learn how to listen and pay attention sometimes the languages subtle in a new sound or vibration. Sometimes they scream as when my friends number five cylinder unexpectedly dropped valve resulting in a broken piston, complete oil loss and prompt engine failure. Some sudden catastrophic failures are impossible to predict, but others can be predicted and possibly avoided. Ask pilots. A mental note of what our instruments usually indicate and look for deviations that could indicate A. OR PENDING FAILURE Just because the indication is still in the green range does not mean that nothing is wrong knowing the usual indications for our own engine will allow us to listen for any deviation and investigate the issue. I am fortunate and get to fly three hundred hours a year commuting to work as an emergency room physician. My Commute is from Statesboro Georgia to lagrange. One to two times each week, the fight one, hundred and seventy, two nautical miles and takes about seventy minutes each way in my highly modified North American navien. My engine was a continental I o five, fifty be that was freshly overhauled just a few years ago. I always change the oil between twenty five and thirty five hours instead of waiting until fifty hours. On two occasions, my engine instruments have displayed unusual oil pressure indications. The first indication was in June two, thousand sixteen during a return trip from New Mexico. The June weather was beautiful and via far but very hot all along the route home. During the flight the oil pressure ran about five to seven PSI lower than usual but otherwise acted normally oil temperature was less than two hundred degrees Fahrenheit for the entire flight. The engine ran great and continue to produce plenty of power I. nervously watched the pressure as it stayed steady in the green range and continued our trip home. The oil consumption remained as usual during that trip and we arrived home on eventually. Once home. The oil was changed in a new paper element oil filter installed prior to this oil change I was using a reusable stainless steel mesh oil filter that was removed and disassembled for inspection at each oil change. On Inspection, I found that the Steel Mesh had accumulated some residue that narrowed the openings in the Mesh. I, reasoned that the oil filter was restricting flow and oil pressure. So I returned to using paper element oil filter that is discarded at each oil change the oil pressure return to normal and I return to flying with my usual oil pressure of forty five to forty six PSI in cruise flight. That engine continued to run great and showed no problems. Regular oil filter cutting revealed no metal and oil analysis was always normal. So normal that I skipped cutting the filter and oil analysis when I changed the oil in December of twenty seventeen. I continued to fly Navien until late February twenty eighteen when something changed. I was flying to work and noticed my oil pressure was once again lower than. It was down into the Middle Thirties but once again remained in the green range and steady. I increased RPM from low cruise at two thousand, three hundred to hike cruise at two, thousand, five hundred and the oil pressure returned to the usual forty, five to forty, six PSI. The oil temperature was around one hundred and sixty degrees, Fahrenheit. which is the usual oil temp in cool weather for that engine. I was concerned about the oil pressure indication but I had seen this occurrence previously the weather was good and the pressure was backup to usual. So I continued on to lagrange. Three days later I returned home to Statesboro. Now comes the lucky and scary part. The flight home was night I F R and I flew the Runway three to approach into statesborough. Before departing I checked everything carefully and the oil pressure on run-up was normal. I watched the oil pressure carefully and flew home that high cruise power setting. I landed uneventfully but noticed that oil pressure at idol was a lot higher than usual. Low Minimum oil pressure at idol with the engine. Hot is ten PSI. But mine was always fifteen to twenty PSI. This night I was looking at thirty five PSI at idol with the engine hot. I had never seen idol oil pressure that high but was not concerned. I push the airplane into my home hanger and return the next morning to change the oil. The tachometer showed the engine had accumulated fourteen hundred and forty five hours since overhaul. Drained the oil and replace the oil filter and began refilling the crank case with fresh oil. When I decided, it was time to cut the oil filter. I found a large amount of metal in the filter. The oil that drained out of the filter was filled with metal flakes that look like silver glitter on my hand. What happened I had not cut the oil filter or submitted an oil sample at the last oil change. So there was no way of knowing what I would have found then. Had I, not cut an examined the oil filter on this oil change. I would not have found the metal in time and bad things would have happened on the next flight. When I disassembled the engine, I found the two of the main bearings had turned in the crank case, and we're obviously very near having a catastrophic failure. Now. This engine did not vibrate knock or suffering power loss. The only in-flight indication of any problem was changed from the usual oil pressure readings with the actual reading remaining in the normal range. As Buck my old flight instructor would have said she was talking to you. I was not listening carefully enough but survived just the same. This is the accident that never happened simply because I cut the oil filter. Had I, submitted the oil for analysis and waited for the results before flying again, the problem could have been discovered, but I fly too often to await test results. I would've received an urgent phone call from my oil analysis company, but it would have been after the accident. My current practice is to cut every oil filter at time of oil change cutting the oil filter while messy is free and gives immediate feedback. This simple process can save your airplane and your life.
