Farivar is herself Iranian American, but tells the Seattle Times that she opposes sanctions arguing that they only hurt the Iranian people. But she says that she's also received threats for not providing enough support for protests the over the death of Masha Amini, a young woman killed in Iranian police custody for allegedly violating the country's hijab law. Farivar has even written an op -ed in The Stranger detailing her positions and calling for the threats to stop. The highest statewide minimum wage in the nation is about to go even higher. Northwest News Corwin Radio's Haake reports that Washington's lowest earners are getting a raise. The State Department of Labor and Industry says on January 1st, 2024, our state's minimum wage goes up to $16 .28 cents an hour. That's $0 .54 more per hour compared to this year's minimum. We already knew the rate would go up. By law, it increases every new year. But we didn't know by how much. L &I sets the new the rate fall in based on the Federal Consumer Price Index for urban wage earners and clerical workers. Individual cities are permitted to set a minimum wage higher than the states. Seattle is one example. At $18 .69 an hour, but no city can go lower than the state minimum. Washington's minimum wage remains highest among U .S. states, but ours is topped by a non -state. Proceedings will also be live streamed through Pierce County's website. That trial expected to run into December. A single car rollover crash in who left one man dead over the weekend. King County leaders right now talking about raising the minimum wage to $19 an hour. We get the preview from Northwest News Radio's Jeff Pojola. The suggestion comes from King County Council Girma member Zahle, who wants workers in unincorporated parts of the county to make as much as those in Seattle or SeaTac. His proposal also includes annual increases and lower tiers for smaller businesses that may not be able to afford paying 19 an hour. Critically, this would not apply to cities which can wage. set their own minimum Details of the proposal are expected later this afternoon. Jeff Pojola, Northwest News Radio. Who will represent Seattle's 7th District? According to the Seattle Times, Council President Deborah Juarez and Council Members Sara Nelson and Alex Peterson have endorsed Bob Kettle over the incumbent Andrew Lewis. The district covers the downtown area highly impacted by the fentanyl and homelessness crisis. It also includes the Queen Anne South and Lake Union neighborhoods. Seven of the nine council seats are up for grabs in November. For the next six days, only walk -on passengers are allowed to board the Seattle Bainbridge Island Ferry. Vehicle traffic is banned while workers replace a 50 -year -old pedestrian walkway on the Seattle side. Also, service on the route is going to be reduced to a single boat. Russell Everett is with Bainbridge Brewing and tells Como News that his business is going to take a hit. We're going to roll with it. It's going to be an adventure for this week. Full service returns early Wednesday morning, just a few weeks away from a change that will affect ferry riders on all routes. The State Transportation Commission approved fare increases that kick will in starting October 1st, and that means vehicle and passenger fares will jump more than 4 percent this year and again in October of next year, so 2024. That's about 40 cents on the state's busiest busiest routes. And of course, Seattle Bainbridge is one of those busy routes. The state says the increases are necessary to cover the full cost of running all of those boats in its system. The Maui Society Humane is preparing for the influx. We know that a lot of people are going to need to surrender their animals and we are here with open arms when that happens and address medical cases, especially for those people that have lost everything. A Facebook page called Maui Fires Pets Help Group is coordinating food and other supplies for the shelter. People are also posting pictures of pets their that ran off during the chaos of the fires or pets they found wandering and hope to return to the owner. Others are posting offers to foster animals if the shelter becomes overwhelmed. An old hotel in Tukwila has been transformed into an important estuary for young salmon. At Northwest News Radio's John Libertini. The swatch of land off Tukwila International Boulevard is one of the few places young salmon can take a break along the Duwamish River. So what we're doing here is make a place where these fish can get out of the river. Lairdo Rollins supervised what's now called Chinook Wind. The coho salmon and Chinook salmon and most other species have to spend some time rearing in the river to grow or else when they hit the salt water they just don't make it. The hole in the ground behind left is filled with plants, tree stumps and pockets where 700 young salmon have been spotted in recent months. EPA Administrator Casey Sixkiller. And for juvenile salmon they'll have a place to rest and rear before that hitting salt water. Rest and grow. Size matters when young salmon are headed for the rugged Puget Sound. Lardo Rollins. By a 6 -0 vote the Washington State Transportation Commission approved a plan to raise ferry fares 4 .25 percent on October 1st with a slight discount for those who purchase multi -trip passes. I think it is very hard for ferry today. users Nicole Grant, the commissioner representing King County, notes the system is plagued by service issues and an aging fleet, but she says the fare hikes presage better times. Our public servants are doing what it takes to make this system what it needs to be. And this vote to adopt these increases supports that leadership. The commission concludes the rate hike is necessary to meet a legislative mandate that fares account for 57 percent of the system's two -year, $740 million budget. Corwin Haake, Northwest News Radio.
