"Reilly was given the role early on There is only one person who can do this role and it's John C. Reilly They knew and then he took it so seriously He would research, he would spend time, he would build these songs He would work on the songs, he'd perform the songs Either he sung all the songs and did most of them on guitar He lived this life, he even went on tour as Dewey Cox Because it was during, unfortunately one of the reasons it didn't do so well was It was during the writers' strike which happened back then as well So a way to subtly promote it was them going on tour And Kristen Wiig did the Let's Duet song with him And they went on the road, it's kind of a bit Spinal Tap a little bit as well They kind of literally did what they were making fun of They were like, we wouldn't ever do this, but we're doing it And this is exactly what we thought it would be So there is a kind of, and I think when you get to the end of the film as well Like spoilers, but there's a song at the end You get to the beautiful ride section And you're kind of a little bit caught up in it You are, it's a really well written song, it's a beautiful ride It's gorgeous, it's one of those, that's your Frank Sinatra I did it my way, that kind of like, I've lived my life It's been full, it's been fantastic through ups and downs But it has been a unique experience And John C. Reilly in an article I'll link in the podcast notes In the show notes, some big name actors came up to him at the end of the film And were like, I watch this time and time again, listen to that song And it makes me cry, he wouldn't name the actors We'll say Robert De Niro for example But yeah, big name A-list actors are like, that's just a fucking great song And I think people forget with Hollywood movies That when Pixar took over Disney Of their main sort of films Songs disappeared from movies And it wasn't until Tangled and Frozen when songs came back And when Walk Hard came out basically It wasn't in that period when parody songs were cool anymore And I know we've recently had things like Popstar And the weird Al Jankovic movie Which again have got those songs in there But this was way before all Lonely Island and everything like that But again Popstar had the same problem For some reason these films don't seem to For me, the Let Me Hold You Little Man The song about him is misplaced I want to look after the midget, protect the midget And again, it's not a word we use anymore But in the context of the film he thinks he's like Oh I'm going to fight for this cause, I'm going to fight for the little man And he's an idiot, he's complete numpty And that's his version of Popstar's not gay or equal rights Or whatever it's called in that song It's the exact same idea, you've got this pretentious popstar rockstar Trying to make a difference, make a change But actually just entirely making it about themselves And trying to push forward this nice cause There's another song called Mr. President which they cut from the film I'm not sure if it's in the extended version Have you seen the extended version? I have, I think this is where we kind of differ Cause I've got the extended version of it So I'm not quite sure anymore what's in the original Right, okay I know the third wife is Cheryl Teigs and Patrick Duffy I think it's mostly the 70s stuff that they cut I think for the most part I didn't remember any of that Does the original have the version of Starman? Yes, very briefly, very briefly It has Starman I think I'm not sure if there's a performance But there's definitely at least a very limited clip of it Maybe not a full performance But it has the interview with what's-her-face Jane Lynch, Jane Lynch Yeah it has that and it has a few other things I will watch the longer I think they call it the unbearably long director's curl or something Which I think is something Apatow is quite guilty of In his later comedies They just seem to be getting longer and less funny as time goes on He doesn't write a very good third act does he, Jude Apatow? Yeah They always dip I think this one's an exception to the rule But Apatow does write a poor third act I don't think he writes this though I think he purely produced it I know when it didn't do so well at the box office Because it was like a budget of 35 million and I think it made 20 million His daughter remembers that day because he was absolutely gutted Because he put so much effort and was so happy with it He loved the idea, the concept, the music, the performance, the jokes, you name it And his daughter now refers to it She goes, are you a bit sad? Are you going to be as sad as when Walk Hard came out? And he's like, I think I took it really well But no, it was absolutely devastating I think all of them were because they put so much effort and time and money into it And again, that's another thing about it The production design, the costumes, the set It's as if you are making Walk the Line or you are making Ray They put all of the effort in because they took that so seriously I think that just equally balances out the comedy Like the ludicrousness Because that's your anchor of the believability of that And it keeps you ingrained and interested in the characters And what they're doing, how their life is going And that allows you to go so ludicrous with the comedy What are some of your favourite either characters moments or situations within the film? I've got loads, almost all of it I think Tim Meadows is at a career height during this He is brilliant, and weirdly, does he play the manager in Popstar as well? He does, yes, he does And David Krumholtz, is that his name? He's in Ray Oh He plays the manager in Ray, so then he comes back in this I think it was his idea to have the unibrow Yeah But yeah, that's when he plays a very similar character He's not in it much in Walk Hard But yeah, he plays that kind of role But even some of the scenes are literally cherry picked from those films They're so spot on, aren't they? Oh, that's so good I love it because it is a pet hate for me in any of these biopics It's when somebody's kind of playing a riff or they're having an argument And you know what's going to happen There's that almost cringe bit in Ray, isn't there? When he pretty much breaks up with his girlfriend and says, we'll sing this song And it's hit the road, Jack, and she's going for it And it's those things, and I love that bit in Walk Hard Where he starts going into the title and the lyrics of the song whilst he's speaking with Justin Wick It's just brilliant And just all of the moments where they're really hitting Whether it's the year 1966 That's right, we're the Beatles Look at me, I'm Paul McCartney They're all saying their names And it's exactly what they do in the biopics as well They really have to go, this is this character, and it's this time And this song is about to come on Yes, I'm going to do a really good performance If my name isn't Buddy Holly All that Be quiet, Jerry Lee Lewis All that sort of shit I love those moments All those moments where it's like Kristen Wiig plays it to a T And this is before she's just started SNL at this point Just growing her kind of fan base And just getting up to where she is now And she's fantastic She goes, I'm Dewey Cox's 12 year old girlfriend, look at me That's brilliant, that bit Can you hear that? I'm his girlfriend Oh, it's wonderful She's brilliant She can feel a lot of the scenes that she's in I love Ron Howard's dad turns up as well He's the preacher at the start Oh yeah Yeah, that's Ron Howard's dad And Clint Howard's dad And he's like, it's devil music It's just a song about holding hands And they're like, you know what the devil has? He has hands, and you know what he does with them? He uses them for holding I mean, in terms of cameos And cast It's just brilliant And I only watched it about six months ago And re-watching it last night Even I'd forgotten who was in it So you go, oh my goodness, John Hill's in it I feel like John Hill turns out to be the I'd be like an astronaut now I love that he's guilt tripping him What's really interesting as well Is that some of this stuff that's quite funny Is actually based on light facts You know him losing his sense of smell Is like Ray, isn't it? I've lost my sense of smell Oh no, it can't smell, poor boy Stevie Wonder had a car crash And lost his sense of smell That really happened It's absolutely ludicrous And weird And also, the ghost coming back His brother He cut in half with a machete He comes back And he's a bit older each time He kind of matches the age Of what he would have been Apparently Johnny Cash kept seeing his brother And every time he would see him Because he was the older brother He'd be like two years older So each time he would be slightly older I didn't know that It's weirdly It's quite obviously within the film It's used in a comedic way But it is somewhat Still based in truth I love the fact The abusive parent, the abusive dad Is just fantastic I can't remember the actor's name who plays him I love the bit where it's like The doctor's like This is a particular bad case of somebody Being cut in half with a machete And he's like Talk sense to us doc, we're not scientists It's just like Just the little Throwaway lines Just absolute genius Oh god I just It's brilliant And you know what's coming Every time he comes on You're just waiting for it with the dad Wrong kid dad The wrong kid dad Even when the kids are like Going out to play It's great being young, we're full of possibilities That's great We can be anything we want to be Nothing's going to happen Nothing horrible is going to happen today And it's just like Please Let's play and we shouldn't play with Pa's machetes Oh god Just absolutely Just genius I love where he goes to play the blues He's like I think I can play the blues He's just got the deepest voice you've ever heard Oh So much fun And like you said It was an amazing cast Character actress Margot Martindale Plays his mum And she's great And again I love that every moment Where his dad's sort of like I quite like the music Or I forgive him He's not a complete fuck up And all of a sudden something horrible happens And he ends up blaming him And there's even That bit where he's just shuffling the hay And he's just singing and he's like Wrong kid dad, wrong kid dad, wrong kid dad Just genius Just absolute genius I'm a Really big fan of the Brian Wilson period about the LSD and the obsession Because for your Listeners who aren't aware Brian Wilson was working on an album called Smile through the 60s And he didn't release it till I believe maybe 2013 Because he couldn't Get it perfect So that whole period where he writes the song Black Sheep Which I guess is A play on pet sounds Yeah of course It's spot on And he actually looks like Brian Wilson as well During that period of time And it's that attention to detail Like you said Which is why it Excels above Any of these spoofs At the time because if you watch the First 15 minutes And my wife is not an easy person To please With comedy I'm sure, I'm sure, I'm sure On many levels Nathan And I put it on And she was kind of watching it And she The first time we watched it About six months she was watching it And she was half in and out And I don't really think she was clocking But it was kind of a spoof And then it clicks Then as soon as you kind of Start picking up on it It is a very well written spoof Compared to those Films like Epic Movie And Disaster Movie and all of them Oh yeah, I mean with those It was just like The thing with this The thing with this is I'd never Seen Ray, I'd never seen Walk the Line before I'd seen this film I loved it I saw it years ago I only just for this podcast watched Ray And Walk the Line just to kind of See if I could get any more out of it That I already had done And I think that's the sign of a good spoof Is that it's still funny Even though I don't know what the references are I don't understand the references So you know I know roughly Kind of the How Walk the Line goes Or how Ray went It's historic isn't it It's their life And I think the problem with those latter Kind of spoof movies Those Meet the Spartans Or whatever you want to fucking call them All those kind of shit spoofs That came out much later on It was just references And that's the problem If you're just making a reference It's not inherently funny You're going oh, remember this? Remember The Office? Remember this? Remember that? It's not inherently funny It's what you do within that And I think this is a masterclass of Not only capturing The essence and capturing the The vibe of what they're going for And kind of people recognizing It even if they don't know it They recognize it to a point where you go Okay it's about this fake Guy who was real And there is a post credit scene where it's like This is the real Dewey Cox And I was like You lying pricks, that's not But they were like oh yeah this is him Look how real he is But yeah I think they've Struck on something that Is a perfect balance of All those elements And I think it's very rare You would get that Or be able to repeat that Lightning in a bottle situation With this, it's very very rare And I think it's Wonderful, I do think more people Should see it if they haven't Last year it was voted as one of the The sixth funniest Comedy from the 21st century I was shocked about that Was that Rolling Stone? I think so, maybe But I believe like you were saying The musicians out there They know all the stuff I'm probably missing All those kind of in-jokes with The songs and those references And things like that I don't know I imagine it's on like It's played on tour buses I imagine it's played after shows Before shows And just like Spinal Tap, like Popstar Like all that stuff I imagine the musicians Get more of a kick out of this Than probably anybody else Because of all those little Like you said, the attention to detail When they were producing it and putting it together They were like, the sets need to look Like the 70s sets The 60s sets These massive kind of big And they're like 35 foot And John C.

"Right hand down. And you do breath of fire for 108 breaths. And do then a big breath in, exhale. Put your fingers in the moon points in these little spaces. And imagine the energy leaving your body into the ground. You do three of those. And then I usually pray. And then I go back into the Starman position and concentrate on the energy of the sun and the grounding working through my body. Something about the arms being in the arm position creates this cross at the heart. It almost feels like the positive and negative charge. I don't know that that's actually how it works, but it feels like something happens in this process. I like the way it feels. That's cool. Does that have anything to do with the Source Family? Father Yod, the cult leader who started the Source Family. Incredible documentary, by the way. We'll put in the show notes at lukestory .com slash luke. That was one of the coolest old school LA cults. I feel like the documentary was good, but it wasn't great and we're hoping to make a great one. Really? Yeah. Wow. And also that documentary was made before the way

"That sort of thing, if he looks at that, I could see him taking that offer from the Los Angeles Lakers and then hitting free agency the next summer. And then, of course, you would have to hope that you can move THT for a tube that has some size that can be a little bit switchy because you're going to need to do that. Like if you were to take Josh Richardson off of this roster and put THT in, you've kind of got a little bit of a mess because Reeves, lamb, either one of them going to start at the two, maybe Reeves, but can he consistently shoot the three? I think it's going to be absolutely critical that you find somebody who can do that. And Josh Richardson just has more of a history of doing that. I'm not saying Reeves can't. Maybe he will be able to, but the three point shot was not his strong suit last season and shot in the low 30s. And so that's simply not high enough. I know he is working on it this summer. Hopefully he comes into camp ready and he's hitting the threes and he's good to go there. But if not, I think you need somebody else that can do that THT, a big question mark there. Can he improve his three point shooting? I think you need to go get somebody who can. Josh Richardson would be an option there. Again, I mentioned kentavious Caldwell Pope. Even if you go Kyle Kuzma and you have to slide TJ Warren up to the two, at least then you've got some floor spacing there. So that part of this is really important that you can move THD to find somebody who can defend multiple positions and shoot the three. And again, I tried to focus on getting younger while still finding pieces that could fit for the Los Angeles Lakers. If nothing else, I hope this illustrates that rob palika has a tall task ahead of him and it's not going to be easy to put together a competitive roster for the Lakers this season while keeping your future powder relatively dry in terms of your future picks, keeping Russell Westbrook on the roster and maintaining that kind of flexibility moving forward because let's face it, there's going to be a lot of teams around the league that are going to try to fleece the Lakers in a Russell Westbrook trade. So it's very possible. Maybe even likely now that the Lakers find themselves in a situation where rob pelinka has to build a roster with Russell Westbrook on it and figure out a way to make things work even with head coach starman ham wanting to do a four out one in offense. Yeah, it's going to be a very, very interesting balancing act for rob pelinka. But Lakers nation. Give me your thoughts. What do you think about this roster that I've assembled for the purple and gold? Let me know in the comment section down below over on YouTube or let me know in the reviews over on Apple podcasts. Till next time everybody. See ya and stay safe..

"That first appearance in an iron curtain country. Police used tick ass in the battle with 2000 fans. Let's see. Understand 1969, John Lennon, right? The recording of ballot, the ballad of John and Yoko took place with just two Beatles, Paul, and John. They were the two that played Paul played the bass drums and piano. John on the lead vocal. The song was bad for many radio stations as being blasphemous. A substation is the word Christ was edited backwards to avoid the bin. Understand in 1970, creedence Clearwater revival made the UK debut when they played the first two nights at Royal Albert Hall. In this day in 1971, the Illinois crime commission issued a list of drug oriented records, including one rabbit by Jefferson Airplane, a white shade of pill by proko harem and The Beatles Lucille the sky with diamonds. "I. I still wouldn't be this point to use unbeaten ahead but i think a lot of people Will be disappointed because he went also short price. I think people betting on Of days and weeks ahead of this contest. So i can see why people are a bit disoriented. But he's still very good tool but you need to be able to the past that mu this is where the pure form analysis comes into it and it's not about believe me i've been there where i've i've looked at the results of racing on. How how did that happen. Like how did that. Horse get beaten and it's because it happens regularly around the world. A horses aren't what you think they are or they're not as good as you. I thought or they're not machines. And even machines breakdown like formula one cars sometimes lewis hamilton gets taken. It doesn't always usually dominates but he's not always going to win because that's just not how the world works and it's certainly not in the world of racing and like what kind of a different race does creative force run and we'll come to him in the second. If he doesn't almost unseat he's writer at the start like he's eating grass basically when the gates open all of that horse but he's just wonder about the the whole division like the entire sprinting division. But starman was seen as this is the this is the hero. This is the horse to go forward. We've we've lost dream of dreams for the season and hopefully we'll get him back next year but that remains to be seen he won the race. That sarma was going to run in the diamond. Jubilee was absolutely the right thing not to go for that race Because he would have been running on ground wouldn't suited him boss. What we've seen is oxides get beaten if you look if you look at a horse like dragons symbol what's dragging symbolist first-past-the-post at ascott and then has the race taken off them by council justice for ocean. I'm with your show On the only one who thinks that with shady everybody else's like talking bollocks He gets beaten by starman he then himself gets beaten by sosa and then finishes in front of sosa When finishing third behind winter power with them ready on a finishing second and i'm ready on a bills on that and goes and wins here winter power having one. We haven't seen since obviously and it'll be interesting to see what happens there. Just these chile was in not racist well for example and chilies. Finishing position in the end at the end was was third. So are these pinterest just beating each other. Because that what's what's ultimately happening are they just. Is it just a constant wheel of that new rosamund. Pike show on amazon prime the wheel of time the wheel of time. Looks like a game of thrones type. Show this amazon prime. Trust me you're going to like it. I think promos look down good anyway and is that the printing division is it just the wheel and the wheel keeps on turning and we can just like eat. Sprinter will beat each other with time. Well that's what usually happens in handicap sprint. That's you're trying to get at isn't it. we we need. We need that group. One sprints Wins wins everything or so. Hope you say that robin most is that just keep professing the full so then we never read where we stand because because that's exactly the point like was on stop you know. He was the july cup winner last year. And he wins the kingston this year and that was fantastic to see but has gone on since and just with the exception of the incredible potash who himself had these days and had his moments. We don't really have a consistent. Group wants sprinter and we haven't had one for awhile. Basically had harry didn't ran. I'm better and i will say this. This point blue point exactly who won by the extreme races at road on the same week that was asked the kingston's abishai from them though the rest of crap. Not the saints. Keep revising school. This is this isn't it. isn't that someday. They run better on some days. They feel like us than next. Might not feel good. Credit force run a monstrous race. All things considered a lot. People like this will affect my creative force just very very chilled about about racing Nice manner about him creative force and as you say star he well. He lost his race. Start in a tested he. He is very laid back individual. Oc stumbled coming out Had had no chance men to be honest. Had no luck in running. Either in the shrink cup was so justin for places And in the running he he kind of he was running. Hell notch they Emory six. He wasn't a sheet not far. He just did come up against a award forces that were horses around him in the gaps income quite krizner. And so yeah. I actually considering finish six as well as she didn't get beat not fall. No i thought he run. A finalize does more prizes to be won with them with a little bit of little bit of juice in the ground is needed a suspect for him but once he gets that and once he doesn't blow the start then he'll he'll take a nice price and I mean even his defeat in the july cup it was only two links between him and starman so he's not that far off dragon symbol. So let me confuse things even further by giving you the bedding for.

"A whole lot of other hitherto backward types who just beginning to flourish. Get a really good point. And even the record in this race in the last ten years like olympic glory to go onto groupon success master the season we just mentioned of confused a massive discipline really in hindsight but there were other decent horses in there. it's just it's it's got an interesting mix of horses corto unfortunately never got the chance to race a race again after winning the national stakes At the curragh post it's intriguing. The dolphin have for whatever reason salt this race out. And i've decided to use this as a springboard for success and i think masekela that you mentioned that's a huge step up on the performance that was expected at roy ascott and kind of felt a little bit. Sorry for him. Because i know that connections the world of them and it looked as though he was going to do it and deliver the goods and it was kind of unusual for andrew balding horse because they tend to improve on their first run but It clearly come on awful fresco. It was probably the switch to go to firm ground. Yes it could mean. The chechen was around on soft ground. I thought it looked very strong chechen stakes beforehand at ascot and still do away even though great. Max was down the field in the superlative sweeping who was folded in the chechen He was beaten as will wasn't he at newmarket loss. Wiki one of the maiden races so mass akita has kind of jumped passed sweeping a great max so definitely improved a lot for that. I run at that. Run in the chechen but i think the front to the chechen rebels is really looking out for point. Lonsdale lovely individual. Throw bron and the queen's will reach the moon rent such a genuine race in that chechen stakes Was in front or on the front end all the way and found an amazing amount. I felt in the conditions over that stiff. Seven phones chiro. Having only seconds. Starting i think majesty agra decent one there and by sea the stars the absolute legend chris. I'm very fine. And what does it very race. You're going to get so many tweets going who through the darlie july the darlie to like was Obviously the feature race of the july meeting and you talk about throwing a blanket over the phone with fields. Similar story bought Starman emerged victorious tomorrow on board. There was something with ashim murphy. Afterwards about picking the wrong horse was being polite answering that. I don't think he had the option I think he came in for the right on on starman when tom wasn't available but i don't think that this was a case of a choice. He was just being very polite Dragon symbols a monstrous race defending champion and roy. Ascott hero oxted Has run a monstrous. We've our power and there for large getting the scumbag each way money A royal ascot hero in creative force and ari'el ascott second finishing sixth so there's not an enormous amount between them and yet the more i watched this back the more comfortable. It seems for starman. Yeah i i degree. I think he's one lane in in what was on is probably the best sprint of season And was a very strong looking renew. I think the point about as she murphy. I think you'll roy. He probably didn't the choice in that he was always gonna stay loyal to dragon single anyway. Because i think he had a hand in the boeing did just been well documented and. I thought it was an exceptionally strong july. Will there were several holes in the coulda put a stop folders. And he's overcoming little bit of interfere Roman at the end he's wet on top. Dragons similar run that superb race in the world cup as discussed earlier age and was disqualified off from first place. But what what struck me. And i take. Dragon symbol on on. Saturday was the way that he encamping. Nanny who five things clear the others komo's cup in the united for me. That's always a massive take when tools or even the first three. Come clear the others of the you can be pretty positive about the full moon and he ran a fantastic price as As well all power had his own way of things on the fall admit he's probably run. The rice in his life possibly helped by being on that false ought to be able to just blast off. But i will quite impressed by the fifth creative force who all four of his previous races that season and he was running at the finish. One won seven photos the road racing in the jersey stakes previously. He looks russell. These still getting better. And even glenn shield. It was just behind them on ground. That really would have been quick enough for him. He's run another fantastic something. He's a remarkable slain share. What what she wants has done with him. I think is is quite stupendous because go back a couple of years He was an import Frontside get come from france and he was basically you know rated little bit low lower than well lower than than you would expect to finishing in july companies. Just done nothing but go forward from what she wants. Some but 'cause most of his best form was coming with cutting the ground as it Boys win in the champion sprint. On champions day also titus o. I thought that was a particularly critical. Run from glenn. Shield who at the age said to be getting better and better. I think there's big race wins in those five dragging symbol oxted art power creative force and glen. She'll still to come in terms of starman. How much higher can he go and perform. And what would you like to see from next well. One of the inhibitors will be the ground. Because he's definitely a false ground holes. He's the any blot on his career was behind glen. Shiel ascot in october on very soft ground. Where you're getting a folder So he's gonna have conditions to suit. I've got a little bit of a a not this morning actually that One of the slot holders full the everest in australia that Extraordinarily valuable race has been in touch with the connections of storm and fishing whether they might be interested That might be a little bit exclusive on the final film that and it but i think the racing post will have it tomorrow but is a chance that he could run in that. We've beaten them. We've we've minded they anyway. Two ways of looking at that. Obviously the the travelling and the difficulties Getting into different countries at the moment is is is is is not straightforward but he probably would get his ground in australia. And it may be very tempting when you consider what is targets was six photons all potential targets in this country and you probably looking the haydock sprint baby the champion sprint. Again on champion. Stay in both of those races. It could be too so far. Yeah so if i were. The connections astonished little approach from somebody with a stake in the everest. Ibm keen to learn a.

"Available a kick the tires. I'm barbara hershey. Sean young the sean young for the screen tests for all the additions which you can see in the dvd extras And she had enough chemistry with four that they ended up in blade runner together so they eventually karen who they liked an animus indiana jones. This gets interesting. There's a lot of jeff bridges stuff out there and turns out. He was not offered the movie. But the casting director did like jeffords donor audition with he'd come out and like hung out and got to say jeff. Bridges would have been good. I don't think he'd been good. It's harrison ford. But i i think. That's a solid constellation press. I've been trying to picture it. I let jeff bridges more than you. Yeah i like him a lot. I feel like you're not. You're not invited me jeff. Bridges is indie. He would have done like the vanishing cross with indiana jones. Jeff bridges had been indy. Would you have been like indiana. Jones taught me. It was okay to be weird. Drink the coffee. Jeff shepherds jeff. Bridges is not weird. I don't know what to tell you. You're the jeff. Bridges is like jeff. Bridges gets weird starman weird. That is pretty weird. Gets fucking weird on. He's pretty weird fearless. He's young he he'll he'll go for it. Are you guys like partisan jeff. Bridges secret bridges. Jason.

"Those well and that was amazing. I bass guitar in the time. And then the mic was up and he started free starman number just the whole thing was all him while but then the drum pocket but down the cores then freestyle buffet and it was just this thing that was written in minutes. You know really effortlessly. And i just kept choosing the good. The bits that that i you know like to see was doing it. And then just the thing just flew and we were just talking words back and forth for fun then you know. We asked me to send to him so he could work on it more himself because he he was really into it and then before i knew it. He had a whole production Harvey did which is so incredible and and live sounding and and and fresh sound for pop music. I think and he had Put givi on. Daniel caesar on the song which just elevated in such a way. So you know the initial thing of getting it out in giving him the space created. That was really my role there. You know just a cool. Do this okay. Now let's that. And then once he had something roy he just took it ran with it. And i think that's really special to him because he knows he. He wrote that you know he that was all from him from inception to finish. Line is really great. I'm so happy to to be in- involved in that and that that initial creation of that song will be one of my probably my favorite memories with justin ever. We've known each other for like ten years. you know. A lot of people heard that song for the first time on his tiny desk concert which is awesome. Because he's on the piano like you said a lot of people might not have ever seen him that way. Yeah sound You know you've spoken a lot about A potential solo album for yourself. Is that something. That's nearing the finish line. Are you focusing on that. You know if something that really taking my time with And it constantly. Developing as time goes by having regretted ever mentioning it because everyone keeps asking about now love talking about it because it keeps getting better and better or i should say we're better better but like more developed and more people are getting involved and it's just like this thing that i'm trying to keep like close because i wanted to you know have you know kind of put. It announce it at once but as time moves on and keep working with more and more people. It's all working itself into making sense together. But what i can say is. It's definitely an album of collaborations. Which as you know and we talked about already is something i love to do. I love to make small bits between artists eater. That really belonged together. And it's really special or that are from totally different worlds but for whatever reason it works so the concept of the album kind lies within that in. I you know we know that. What a great guitar. Stu are so when you're songwriting. Is it kind of a mixture of lake. Are you starting always with a guitar line or do you start other places like how does that work. I really like starting with base. A is well because with a base. There's no cords so it allows you when you're riding melody which i said at the original rift records for me. I then malady. There's no major minor because you're not. You know the the base. I will suggest. Should it be major minor chords but when writing the melody just baseline. You're not stuck there because it's root notes so It's a really. You know i feel like you have more freedom with a great baseline vocal and then the melody can dictate what the court should be after that you know. I saw you laugh. When i say i'm going greg qatar our by. I feel a keith. Needs to tell you when he first heard o- policies on okay. So when i heard the post album for the first time has great and i get to take what you want and i sort of lose my shit. Because i'm like okay. Ozzy postie travis. Who's the qataris who's leaving qatar. like it's what what. Why didn't you get your artist credit or simply when i literally played the song like thirty times like in a row like in a stretch because i just love it so much so yes right moment on that song. That wasn't really a question. It was just me being enthusiastic cuts so much. I mean that probably you know. It's my one of my favorite moments ever Never forget driving down sunset boulevard and kiss. Fm comes on la and they're playing fucking take what you are and there's a tapping guitar solo and like passing the whiskey at.

"I mean. I've talked about this as we review on kenny expert episodes or issues. You know i mean. He's he's interested in the world in a way that not all writers of the necessarily are i think to to your point. It's a global team. That can kind of go anywhere. Mutants around the world you know. They're not just mutants in new york. That is a clear part of the books identity plus then to like you have moy in In muir island in scotland you have the savage land in antarctica. You have the taking up base in australia in the outback era. So you have all these kind of destinations that become very global in in a way. That marvel comics often does not feel. I mean i think like so much of it like you said it's just it's just gonna depend on the story. I mean there's no reason spiderman can't have a story in florida chasing the lizard. It's just is that an interesting story or is it something we've seen before right I think the fantastic four. I would say for example to mirror a good example like they are limited. I would say they are hampered by stories that keep them in new york Think stories that are very like the fantastic four aren yancy street to me really is is limiting the potential of this cosmic group of astronauts. Like they should be traveling all the time. I kind of feel like in exploring the negative zone dimension in all sorts of things. I think that makes them more interesting I do think historically comics have struggled at one thing. That dc definitely has over marvel is a sense of place in a sense of unique fictional place. Especially you know. I really liked dc cities. I think not only gotham and metropolis like starman is a run. I really dig from the nineties where it bills out what does it opal city. As like a new its own thing and you just get a sense of that place and at feel merval kind of loses that by having everyone just in new york which i know you're big east coast bias guys act but i resent on a sports and irrational level. You know like i. It's weird how they can't play acted as chicago. I resent it so the fact that that's the place. I'm supposed to connect with ideal. Marvel doesn't really have fictional cities except for mattress for more or less right like fictional countries condo liberia. Man in those kind of its own thing those work. I think we're kind of letting area but like it doesn't do the same thing you see does where it has you know metropolis and gotham in central city. Central city keystone. Got all these places on thymus care. Help the real cities and marvel never stand out except for new york right like los angeles like west coast avengers in los angeles very rarely feels like. Oh it's keying in on like what makes los angeles unique Yeah it's kind of. That's kind of interesting and there was a night wing. Run by david walker and company not too long ago senate chicago oh really side yeah interest night wing has also been in chicago. That's what i said i misspoke..

new york australia antarctica david walker florida Marvel los angeles scotland senate one thing marvel chicago east coast liberia west coast spiderman nineties starman long ago fantastic

"You have alan scott and you have everybody. But it's in the modern era. They're all those classic jazz character. Starman and green lantern. And of course wonder woman superman and batman and that that would be interesting would be interesting to see batman and superman and wonder woman form or that man in doctor and green lantern former. Gsa in the bat pat averse just have to see how far they're gonna go and how much they want to expand it now since we know they're building out of gotham verse because they are going to have that gotham series on hbo. Max it makes you wonder okay. Are they just doing a batman moore universe but that's a pretty small universe when you think about it anytime that you're confined to one city because that's the thing it's like eight. Oh i'm afraid of the batman super villain. I wanna move to milwaukee we're batmans not robbing. They're that's much smarter move. I'm not tired i mean. That's the thing ailing. If you're gonna stay batman centric and you're not gonna bring in any other like you know you're not gonna bring in superman or anybody doesn't who cares what her this you know. I thought that's originally but wonder center. Like oh yeah these movies now yeah. The interconnected universe thing didn't work Everything's going to be. Its own separate thing. But now they're interested in labeling each universe but you know that's the thing is i think that the internet connected universe did work. This was roughly executed because it kind of jammed altogether like lil zack. Snyder was your guide at connected universe. Even his real say josh brought adventures together and then did angel voltron which a lot of people don't enjoy as much. The fact of the matter is is you can have a bad director now. You can have a bad taste and then just move on from it you know i mean. I think they were kind of leaving snyder. Unofficially in charge of most of that. It's like yeah. I mean josh. We draw might had a bad movie or two but foggy was running the show over there. So it's like exactly but the thing is you can then move on you know there anything is. Dc's biggest problem on this is that they want to commit to something. And it's like you know even marvel didn't commit to everything right away you know. Yeah you get a tony. Stark cameo in the hulk. Yeah you get some startac highlighted in the hall but really when you get to four kids so it's like all the little cameos basically marble community cameo it's not a shared universe. They'll build that universe until the avengers and quite frankly if they had really felt something didn't work they probably would just well. Maybe that's not what happened..

"Sorry i skipped over something. She decided to give him the superhero suit that she made while he was literally stepping out of the shower butt naked in panel. We see his but and she walked into the shower. I what kind of family this is. But it's weird. One he puts on the suit flies to go save. This guy picks up this thing saves the guys like wow. I had to use all my strength to do this. I better figure out what i'm going to do with these superpowers. And that's basically the end of the issue when he says i don't want to be a superhero because some superheroes are only okay but the rest of them suck and then he they make snide comments about booster gold. That i didn't get 'cause i don't dc comics before two thousand eleven but apparently booster gold got powers and then just only did marketing deals with his superpowers. I is the funniest shit in the world. He's like okay. Some superheroes are okay. But i i'm never going to be like them And then at the end of the issue says maybe i will be a superhero. It's it's like a two pages he decides go from. I don't like superheroes be one. And then we end with this. Dr melrose guy hearing about the flying men in phoenix. And he says that quit. That can't be the guy that we may be possibly hit with our satellite so like the thing that's that's basically the summary of it's it's a weird book. If i were picking this up in the eighties. I'd be like why should i even pick up the second issue. Because the end of the book is pretty much the villain saying that can't be our man and then our superhero sane. I guess i'm not going to be a superhero. Like that's the end stupid. So the eighties were time I'm a fan of space radiation as a as a plot device. I appreciate the fact that we're not just going to like try to explain it or anything to say it's Space radiation fuck off. Yeah exactly and it's not even that it's space radiation. It's collected space radiation. That's turned into a highly focused cosmic beam or something like that so dumb fantastic. Four's lawyers are ready well and that's the thing like for for this book. I wanna talk to you guys about what you thought of your books as well but like you know for this book. This felt like the most cookie cutter superhero origin story. That was definitely marketed. As you don't wanna miss out on this brand new series that definitely gonna be worth something in the future. Because that's that's how it felt like you know if you read the original spider man you read you know these very like stanley style like superheroes gets powered by happenstance. And he's a regular person if felt like dc was trying to copy marbles formula like twenty five years. Too late so yeah. I don't know. I know that starman has had a couple of different series i think tony harrison book. That was really possible early popular Even though he's kind of a garbage person but like. I know that that was the thing that had happened but other than this. I'd never other than that. I'd never heard of starman really before this because i think he's basically like dc's version of century Before century came out as a character from marvel were like he so powerful and he has absolute power that rivals all of the big the trinity characters. But he can't be used outshine those characters because he's too new and he's not nearly as cool so yeah. I don't know it's really really weird comic book to say the least as starman in any way related to star girl. Maybe as far as the story that i read is concerned. They are not related. I think it's just a coincidence..

"Pods and now it's time to answer our trivia question back on page two. I asked you what david bowie song has been covered more than any well. Let's run through the top ten based on collating done by the sound of vinyl and number ten. We have rebel rebel with twenty two covers in the number nine position is the man who sold the world which has also been covered twenty two times so i guess you could say those two are tied for ninth at number eight is let's dance which has been covered. Twenty five times edging. That one out with twenty six covers is starman taking the number seven spot at number six is under pressure which has been covered thirty one times. The number five song with thirty five covers is this is not america. That was a little bit of a surprise for me. I gotta admit also a little bit of a surprise. Was this one ashes to ashes which holds the number four slot with thirty eight covers and number three is life on mars yet. Another surprise for me which has been covered forty. Two times are excited yet or in the top two. A number two is my guest for number one hit space oddity which has been covered fifty five times but the number one boy song covers with sixty one would be heroes which we talked about half a lifetime ago in episode number sixty six and if i was a betting man i bet a huge percentage of those covers are fairly recent despite the song being over forty years old and that my friend is a full live on another edition of how good it is. "That's not even that's a terrible synopsis. Yeah it's a one. Yeah totally terrible synopsis. It's an english language. Norwegian fantasy action film co written and directed by andrei overdraw. He did the movie. troll hunter. which turned out to be like troll. Hunter was kind of like kind of like an indie darling like when trump came out people were raving about that movie. The film is spy is inspired by norse mythology and it starts nat wolff. It's pretty much all know. Region cast except for american star nat wolff and I i really. I really liked this movie quite a bit. I wanna know what you guys thought. I'll read it here in a moment. But i wanna know what you guys thought. Greg what did you think about mortal. I would listen. I honestly real quick. I kind of compare this to like norse. Mythology meets that movie chronicle by josh trank. Yeah when this movie started. I thought i knew what it was going to be. I said to myself okay. Here we go with two fucking hours of people following clues and realizing that he really does have superpowers and maybe halfway through the movie will see him late. A match in front of somebody. This movie takes a much bolder direction than i was. Intimidating absolutely leans into mythology. I in in part i. I believe because people have been exposed to some of this mythology through marvel films I think that's why can do that. i really did enjoy it though i. I couldn't help but wonder as i'm watching it. Hell frigate nice. People are in norway. Like if this dude was in the united states they would've popped them in the head in the first five minutes of this movie. Someone would a shot him like every ten minutes to help. Keep them alive but they they held at a bus do just made a car exploded in the bus drivers the the truck drivers like era. And i'll give you a ride. Whatever but i. I enjoyed this. I you know what. I'm going to be a little bit of a tupperware whore this episode. I'm giving us a tupperware. I thought it was west. I'm gonna give it a tupperware too. It reminded me of star man a lot. Definitely a starman vibe. Yeah absolutely if you love that old. Eighty s movie from You know from the eighties if you if you love and be loved that jeff bridges movie from the eighties star man. This is a lot like this like he basically like you know. You've got a guy here who is coming into his powers and you've got somebody else who's like just a regular human who's taking him in on taking on this journey and trying to find out more about him and you know there's kind of like a relationship that struck up between these two and and it really opens up north mythology and it really felt it felt like chronicle meets four meets starman i top it as well what did you think rebecca of mortal or.

They give and take it for granted and then go by your local comic shop support. Your sponsors like comic books bookshops. I'm scared they might go the way of everything that the internet is torched. Yeah well you know. They sell toys to so that's yet focus given the industrialized and that's what counts. What comic shops have is if they have a small footprint. Don't mind having a stack. Comic book shop can have your long boxes. You have the new stuff you have the toy. She's wonder not only to raise your thin margin you gotta have a market that's stanford they're not gonna sell comics in omaha eventually so young on in but you know i don't even know where they not even really big so i'm just guessing that sit close zamin. David Mackenzie Narrates a Scene From ‘Hell or High Water’

"Prompts Marcus to find a local guy who can drive him up to an area where he tried to get a shot? He's really out for blood. Now because he's so angry at foster's tanner and he's told it's going to be an impossible shot. It's GONNA be five hundred yards away. He says I don't care let's go do it and as they get up there the character says Joe you're winded and it's not even your gun let me take the shot and he says not on your life he's mine with that jaw jutted out and that grizzled grumble of his that we get from bridges in this fell and right before he takes the shot. We get that deep breath the intense focus. But there's even a sense of pain in that pause where it's almost like. He wishes. None of this was happening. He so angry though and he's so eager to shoot but you get the sense that he could break down. Any second is if the whole weight of all of this senselessness is there on bridges face and when it cuts to foster. This is where that mythic sense comes in again. He's looking looking at everyone down below him. He thinks he's safe up here in the hills and he says Lord of the planes. That's me and that's exactly the moment where he gets shot and I'll let our listeners. Takeover a couple listeners on our facebook page talked about this moment the beats that happened after he fires the kill. Shot Zac Santo. Chief says his reaction action to the end of the shootout at the climax of hell or high water is playing like three emotions at once relief. Joy and sorrow through a haze of mental and physical exhaustion. And it's a fantastic moment. Tom Curran shape. Powell goes even further with those combinations of emotions. He says when he kills Ben Foster's character after his partner is killed. His reaction is incredible. Incredible mix of victory sadness. Justice relief exhaustion frustration. Regret all at once. It's incredible. It really is incredible. It's all those things and there's even a little a bit of humor the guy who's next to him who said he probably couldn't do it. He turns to him and gives him a look. Like you doubted me. And then he slaps him a couple of times playfully letting out a chuckle. And it's that chuckle then just immediately kinda shifts into this really plaintive cry and just within a few beats as I said he hits every one of those notes that our listeners describe it's really a Bravura Jeff bridges

SpaceX's Starman and His Tesla Have Made a Lap Around the Sun

"X starman and elon. Musk's tesla have made a lap around the sun. Now i obviously announced this earlier in the year <hes> for those of you who didn't know starman starman and the tesla roadster have actually been launched into space falcon heavy rocket. <hes> let me let me recap starman in his deep space ride have completed their first lap around the sun the spacesuit clad mannequin who sits behind the wheel of space x founder and c._e._o. Elon musk's red tesla roadster launched on february six twenty eighteen on the inaugural flight of the huge falcon heavy rocket. The dua wrapped up their first solar orbit over the weekend. According to the tracking site whereas roadster dot com yes actually live and act right now. Starman anna tesla have an orbital period of about five hundred fifty seven earth. If days website calculated any space for five hundred sixty days as of wealth yesterday august nineteen at launched a roadsters radio was playing david boase life on mars cars battery is still working. Starman has now heard that same song more than one hundred and fifty thousand times and the site provides some other interesting tidbits bits as well for example. The tesla has now traveled more than seven hundred sixty million miles in space meaning. The car has exceeded its well thirty six thousand mile warranty more than twenty one thousand times over but outside of that debut fights by rockets are inherently risky which explains why space x chose to put a dummy payload payload in rather than a functional satellite on february twenty eighteen falcon heavy launch must said he joel's starman and roadster her fun but the car likely serves a marketing purpose as as well car and driver will probably make many more laps around our star last year in orbit modeling study calculated at the road there will eventually slam into either venus earth. We're not exactly sure but they predicted it out. It's not going to be a big deal. <hes> likely within the next tens of millions of years who knows how long did based on calculations so who knows how how many times <hes> starman in roadster. We're gonna be rotating around but eventually it's gonna slamming either venus earth. There is a six percent chance of an earth impact in two point five percent chance of a venus impact within the next million years the authors study found so that also meant that the falcon heavy rocket boded well in terms of tests and a bunch of other things going on behind the scenes so <hes> yeah i can only imagine like down the road like human civilization down the road. When something comes slamming into the earth. They'll be like why in a new world is this who put a mannequin in roadster and then somebody will probably say that's the real person on their dead i can't i can't wait to see the reaction of course none of us will be around for it. None of us will have been around for a very very long time but depends on many any time of this rocket will orbit around the star before finally slammed into something <hes> hopefully earth but we'll see

Gareth Bale left in limbo after Real Madrid board block China move

"Your Gareth Bale and you've got your manager saying it's best if he moves on yet he doesn't want to go. What do you do if you'll Gareth? What would you do? Would you sit on the bench. Take the money or would you go so I said go somewhere else or a couple of days ago. I said he has to go. Prolongs prolonged career Gallup show everybody that he still talk class player having seen the last two games that Real Madrid played. I'm not sure that sedans going to be there for too much longer or I think he might not. He's not lost the dress in but he doesn't know how to change this side that a plan really poorly at the moment when he didn't end to last season this Gareth Bale thing is causing a lot of problems I think Gareth by just and if it was say I'm going to stay here. I'm GONNA prove your if you give me a chance and if he does go and you manage the Chancellor John Lag into new Sean is not the answer and I don't think too many clubs in the premier league all by Munich or P._S._G.. Look are they going to make a bit for him. At the moment or plays wages so you could go and pay for one ice pops if you took a Paker if you took it up but still I don't think too many coming in for him at the moment because he hasn't played that much over the last couple of you could force the hand to move I would go and play in in a Premier League club and try and be there starman improve over the next four years on still a world class player and we told you so the fact fails they've got him play and go e._p._S.. G. And then you will prolong career Numero got bill and and maybe a little picot now yeah and then you set for another full five years Ganga now just going to say to be fair. We have to consider also ASENSIO's injury in this. I mean it's still very crowded upfront. Fronton sedans also been very very clear about this but if you look at it in terms of in terms of numbers game that's one. That's one guy who who incidents mine would have been a headed bail in the pecking order came out of the mix and then you know it's hazard. It's Venetia Jovic expense. Is there some room in there for Gareth Bale. Do they want to hold back a little. He's loved the only thing I can think of cops. Sedan has completely lost bail regardless of whether Bill Gates and the team every now and again or comes off the bench kind of billy gibbons it on every single thing he's got no the will be professionalism that will give set in the mode but possess let x factor when you you really want to play for somebody and you really for the Jersey and you really WanNa be there so when you take away taken a chunk of the extra ability then you have so he's lost got with bill guys bills weakness team staying Real Madrid note clearly if they need another body. He's there and ASENSIO's injure. That's all I'm saying religious and you're putting money you just have a body there just in case the injuries fifty million body. That's not suggesting could I'm not suggesting but if he doesn't WanNa go Stewart for the time being that might come into it as well. You know there's only around Madrid can't sell him if he doesn't WANNA WANNA go but they may be in a situation where they say with ASENSIO gone is their way to repair this Gareth.
