"Staples dot com Staples. This is weekend edition from NPR News. I'm Lulu Garcia Navarro. Ah, Sunday coffee and oranges in a sunny chair as the line from the Wallace Stevens poem goes. Many office workers. That line could also describe Monday and Tuesday and the rest of the week spent working from home for the last year or so after organizations shuttered offices to promote social distancing. Gallop says some 70% of the workforce in white collar jobs, which they define as occupations. Traditionally performed in offices or behind a computer is still working from home and more than half of them want to stay remote as much as possible. While workers don't raise your hopes, too high employees think that just because they want it, they're going to get it. And that kind of goes a little bit against the social contract that exists between the employer and the employee. That's Tom Gimbel. He runs the staffing and recruiting firm LaSalle Network in Chicago. In March, LaSalle sent out a survey asking over 350 top executives and HR heads. What they plan to do about returning to the office and 70% of companies plan to bring their employees back to the office and the fall of 2021. As vaccination rates improve and the number of serious covid cases trends downward. That's only looking more likely. But those CEOs were saying that in March so what was driving their opinions, then innovation, collaboration and retention. When there's people in a conference room that can see each other's eyes and get the feeling of the energy that that creates collaboration, and it sparks innovation, and it's a heck of a lot easier. To leave a company when you don't go in every day, and you don't have as many relationships and that's what happens when you're working from home, and so if companies can get people together, We're going to create more and they're going to be happier and want to stay there longer. I'm Alexia Cambon. I'm a research director at Gartner, where I head up research looking at the employee experience, So we polled white collar workers office workers and asked them what it was that they had really enjoyed about working remotely over the course of pandemic. And we found a couple of things. So the first one is that they just enjoyed having more control over their work environment. So employees with a disability, for example, we're all of a sudden able to design working away. That suited them the same thing for women. Another piece that we found was a greater ability to integrate personal and professional obligations. We don't really realize how much time commuting takes from us, and I think we're starting to understand now that it takes away from personal time and this time away from loved ones from our Children from our hobbies, But the pressure to return to the office isn't just coming from the C Suite. Cities are eager to have their commuters back commuting again. Des Moines has a very large employment based downtown, and we have Somewhere between 70 and 80,000. Workers who work downtown J. Byers is president and CEO of Des Moines Partnership, which helps foster economic and community development. His job is to lure employees to his city and to make sure there's a healthy amount of businesses disturb those employees, restaurants and dry cleaners and entertainment venues. We have the highest concentration of insurance workers actually in the country. And so you know, when Covid 19 hit a large number of those employees, you know, started working from home and all these companies made these pivots which, but as you can imagine, it definitely made the streets of downtown Des Moines. Very, very quiet. Have you been lobbying bigger businesses to make sure workers return? I mean, what has been your sort of role in that? Yes. So we have definitely lead by example. Our entire team has been back and we've been activating our events as well to our farmers Market time. Downtown Des Moines, which on any given Saturday attracts more than 20,000 people. We've been up and running since the beginning of May. We hosted the Dew tour for professional skateboarding a couple of weeks ago, so there's a lot going on. We're definitely leading by example and trying to create that fear of missing out. The Labor Department reported Friday that employers added 850,000 jobs in June, beating expectations and well above the previous three months is average. That's a strong labor market. And it means that an office worker who's not so keen to go back to the office full time or to spend so much time commuting may just have some leverage. And that may come to the benefit of place as well. Like Des Moines. We have had a number of folks who have moved here who are still working, you know, in other cities as well, Well, we had roughly 300 people we hired in the last year. Christie K. Burma is executive vice president of human resources at a theme holding an insurance company with offices in New York City. Stanford, Connecticut, also Linda, California, Hamilton, Bermuda and West Des Moines, where she works. We are starting to see applicants from larger cities because larger cities have a higher costs of living, and they have commuting issues so they can move to a more affordable, thriving community like Des Moines. So we are starting to see that trend. CEOs need to make a decision of what kind of company they want to have Tom Gimbel of LaSalle Network Now I'm not saying just because I like having people in the office and think it's best I'm not throwing stones at people that don't and I think that if you want to have a company that's completely remote. God speed. I think that's great. I think we all have to pick how we run. Our companies and employees have to pick what type of company they want to work for, and where the prioritization is of those things. Alexia Cambon at Gardner agrees and says employers and employees both have an opportunity now to reimagine office work. We're kind of in this pivotal moment in time where we shouldn't just be recreating what we used to do. We shouldn't just be virtualized in the office and we shouldn't be going back to what we were doing. Pre pandemic What we saw. A lot of organizations do during the pandemic was to effectively just virtualized the way that they had worked in the office. So to just recreate How we used to work in the office at home, and that has been causing real issues for employees that has been driving real fatigue. Well, we don't know what the long term repercussions of everybody working remotely is, and in one side of the of society, we say that mental illness is just as big of a health risk as physical illness. But yet we have mental illness coming as a result of isolation, working alone and not being in an office and it's being discounted because people want it. And that to me is lunacy. I think the way to think about the office now is to really understand what is worth commuting into the office for what is it that the office can offer us? That the home environment or the third space cannot And this is where companies are going to have to get very good at doing that analysis for their specific value proposition for their specific culture. So maybe my plans of hosting weekend edition from a beach in Portugal or Greece. We'll just have to wait. Despite his ongoing tensions with the royal family. Prince Harry was in the United Kingdom last week. The occasion the unveiling of a statue of his mother, Princess Diana, NPR's Frank Langfitt, reports on what differing attitudes towards the prince and his wife, Megan, the Duchess of Sussex, say about Britain today. The unveiling took place on what would have been Diana's 60th birthday. Prince Harry joined his brother, Prince William, at the ceremony. But.

"More at staples stores or staples dot com staples this is weekend edition from NPR news I'm Lucasian of RO the US and China into a preliminary trade deal this past week and while there is doubt that it actually does anything to change the status quo it may signal an easing of tensions between the two giant economies even so the terror for continues a war that has cost American consumers and businesses tens of billions of dollars but why isn't the US economy in worse shape because of that we are putting that question and others to Randall crossing her he is a former governor for the federal reserve any joins me now on the line welcome readings of first I'd like to get your reaction to what was signed this week so I think it is a first step towards a long long process trying to regularize relationship between the US and China but I think it really is only a first step in really pretty modest step yeah an editorial in political magazine called the deal almost a complete failure that at best modestly revises the status quote also said the only clear winner from the past two years is China Beijing is taking the measure of the United States and concluded that less economic engagement with America is in its self interest your thoughts that's going to be too far I mean if you look at the agreement itself the Chinese made a number of concessions sample promising to buy significantly more US goods and the US made virtually no concessions want to step back for a moment because the trade war does pretty much continue and there were dire predictions in some quarters about how this trade war would hurt the economy has if you look at trade is the percentage of U. S. G. D. P. it's not that big it's much bigger for China it's much bigger for many other countries for example Germany and China that is an important player in U. S. trade that's the largest importer to the yet to the US for this one of the largest but when you think about is your trade is a relatively small fraction of GDP China is a fraction of that and then you put twenty five percent tariffs on that you get a fraction of a fraction the fraction and so that's relatively small in terms of the US economy that doesn't mean that some sectors that are directly affected aren't feeling a lot of pain and they are but as his rounds of terrorists kept coming and not just on Chinese goods but for time on steel Anil and aluminium from Canada Mexico and the European Union we know that this cost gets passed on to the US consumer so why haven't we seen dramatic price hikes for inflation that will in many cases some of the other people who are buying this are absorbing some of those costs are not passing all the mon so that's why there's some pain and some of the sectors not only may they be selling less but you're absorbing some of this reducing their profits over time will this equation change if this continues in this way so I don't really see any settlement coming soon and I think this is not some that you need to the trump administration I think if you look at many of the leading democratic candidates they have adopted a position towards creating a position towards China it is very similar to to the president's and so I think this is going to be something that will be ongoing regardless of who's in the White House going forward run across is a professor at the university of Chicago and the booth school of business and a former governor for the federal reserve thank you very much all right thank you very much democratic presidential candidates are darting around Iowa and New Hampshire hosting town halls and rallies the former mayor of south bend Indiana people to judge was largely unknown at the beginning of the campaign but with two weeks until the Iowa caucuses hundreds of people now line up to hear him speak in a middle school gym or a veteran's hall and PR is awesome holiday takes is outside and inside one of.

Happy Friday, one and all sometimes success backfires on you. That might be the case with water burger cult favorite burger chain. Founded in Corpus Christi Texas back in nineteen fifty founder, Harmon Dobson's vision was to offer a made to order, five inch burger huge time that would prompt diners to exclaim, what a burger it worked in spades over the last sixty nine years. The chain grew in two thousand one the Texas legislature named water burger a Texas treasure today. There are more than eight hundred watt burgers in ten states with annual sales of more than two billion dollars. But until this month, it remained family owned on June fourteenth Dobson's announce they sold a controlling interest to merchant Bank in Chicago which intends to further expand, what a burger, but here's where the chains vary status as Tex. Sys- treasure hurts Texans are livid in Austin, a fan posted a sign saying, dear Chicago. If you hurt her kill you an Instagram post showing a picture of the sign got more than sixteen thousand likes and comments like, don't Chicago, my water burger and naturally dough mess with Texas. They warned the new owners to keep their hands off the menu, the burger recipe the catch up and even the mustard. Many commenters asked why the family didn't sell to an investor in Texas, y'all when you build a company with a following his rabbit as water burgers will change in ownership and expansion is a very tricky thing. Indeed, the company needs to maintain its identity, even as it scales up beyond the difficulty of family succession after three generations. What a burger may feel the need to expand to compete with its rivals. Arguably, its biggest rival is every hamburger chains biggest McDonald's, but suggest any what a burger loving Texan. The McDonald's has anything in common. With their favorite burger place and you may get run out of state. So who poses the biggest problem for what a burger one possibility dare I say it is Irvine, California based in and out burger, which Texas monthly reports has as big a cult following in California, as water burger does at home in and out recently expanded into the Lone Star state horrifying Texans who are already unhappy with an influx of Californians into the state much less their hamburgers, the seventy year old west coast chain, though, does pose a threat to what a burger at home prompting taste tests, competitions in columns about who's burgers, really best. Spoiler alert here, despite lauding in an out withdrew worthy compliments, Texas. Monthly's blind taste testers ruled what water burger to be best hands down. Well over its seven decades in existence. Family owned in and out burger has been expanding even more cautiously than what a burger it has some three hundred locations compared to what a burgers, eight hundred but recently crossed, not just the Texas State line, but also Colorado's where it plans to open fifty new stores. Both companies face competition from other fast rising chains to shake shack five guys in smash burger could give either one or both a run for their money. So where will what a burger go next and we'll Texans ever forgive them. Chicago's. And obvious guests as is the mid west in general, and at least one, a communist familiar with what a burgers, new owner speculates that it plans, an expansion nationally along the lines of McDonald's and Burger King, but not to worry, Texas. He says they'll keep what makes water burger, whatever and just help spread Texas culture across the country. Now that's the way to play it. And that might just take the sting out of this deal for disappointed, Texas. From wondering this business daily. The dream program is his manifestation of that desire, the quest for space travel inspire stem interests, like no other endeavor. The company says, alpha has been a long time in the making unlike other startup space companies like SpaceX and Jeff Bezos blue origin, firefly CEO didn't make a fortune elsewhere before starting his company in two thousand fourteen he kept it funded with small amounts from venture capitalists until twenty sixteen when a combination of financial and legal problems Sankt, the company it filed for bankruptcy and competitors. Left it for dead in two thousand seventeen it's assets were. Sold, but six months later, a new investor came along and Markku sick was able to restructure and start inventing again, last November, NASA awarded contracts in nine companies that allow them to bid on delivering payloads to the moon over the next decade. And even though firefly has yet to launch its first rocket it received one of those lunar landing contracts. But the part of the space industry that firefly occupies, crowded, the company faces several rivals, including SpaceX, virgin rocket and rocket lab. Remember your first day of college when you were told to look left and right at your fellow freshman and warned that in a year or two. One of you would be gone. From wondering, I'm David Brown, and this is business daily on this Wednesday June twenty sixth. We've said it before and boy, is it true Americans love their dogs all the way to the cash register just considered shui the pet food delivery company when it went public on June fourteenth shares shot past its opening price by sixty percent as hungry investors gobbled up everything they could the company, which is archly owned by PetSmart raised a billion dollars in its IPO the market now values chew at about fourteen billion, even though the company has never turned a profit and it faces a growing pack of pretty ferocious rivals. That's right. The Amazon like e Taylor sales doubled every year between twenty fourteen and twenty seventeen and zoomed even higher last year to three point five billion dollars. But it is still. Losing money as one stock analyst said those losses are getting smaller, but still, it's reminiscent of stock values during the internet, bubble when prophets briefly didn't seem to matter. But this year all IPO's are not the same meaning investors. See something in shui that they're not seeing in other recent public offerings like Uber's which flopped back in may. So what did she do? Earn a blue ribbon. Well the company claims to be the country's largest online pet retailer. It sells all things that your four legged companions get ever need from food to pet medications to birdseed, and even grooming supplies for your horse about sixteen hundred brands sit on its virtual store shelves, since it launched its shipped one hundred million orders, a good number of those subscriptions repeat shipments that take the pain out of forgetting the lizard food at the pet store. It's also capitalizing on our trend toward acting like our furry feathers. Three and scaling companions are essentially our children smart business move since pet ownership is growing, like crazy, particularly among millennials. We lavish so much attention and money in our shit, Susan Siamese that the market for pet products has doubled since two thousand five it's now worth about seventy billion dollars a year. We even spoil our pets during downturns in that's important. The market continued to grow steadily during the great recession. This is not to say that shoe is growth could continue unconstrained where one company discovers a lucrative market, so others last month. Walmart opened an online pharmacy called pet Rx dot com, which delivers any of three hundred brands of pet meds to your door presumably its own vets are prescribing. Those beds, WalMart has twenty one veterinary clinics in it stores now and his opening another one hundred by next spring. It could be a dog fight between chewy and WalMart. There are still a lot of questions about chewy. Is it overvalued will it hold its own against a growing pack of rivals. When will it turn a profit and? Oh, yeah. Does it company? It's called on chewy here. Boy. From wondering this business daily subscribe to our show for free on apple podcasts Ugo podcast. It your or Spotify. Thanks so much for listening. I'm David Brown. From wondering, I'm David Brown and this business wars daily on this Monday, June twenty fourth. Sotheby's the famed auction house just closed its biggest sale ever. It sold itself to French Isreaeli businessman Patrick, dry for three point seven billion dollars dry. He is a telecom and cable industry tycoon. He founded European cable company. I'll tease in two thousand one and has a reputation for building a global business empire through acquisitions and aggressive cost-cutting. But the Wall Street Journal has already reassured art lovers to mention Sotheby's employee's the dry. He won't bring that cutthroat strategy to his newest acquisition rather, he's buying the auction house for art's sake. The journal says and art lover himself draw. He owns works by Picasso Matisse and Chagall and. His long admired the auction company, which was founded in London in seventeen forty four at least now draw he plans to hold onto Sotheby's for the long term and help it grow the first step. He intends to take these private ending. It's thirty one year stint on the new York Stock Exchange. The idea is that going private will help Sotheby's compete with its arch-rival Christie's Christie's is a private company also owned by a French businessman, the two companies often scrap over lucrative consignment deals to sell multi million dollar artworks in collectibles to seal those deals auction houses often discount their commissions, but as a privately, held business Christie's had more latitude to shave its commissions and make big deals than Sotheby's did since Sotheby's had to report those details to shareholders that latitude makes a difference over the last year. Both Christie's and Sotheby's have done well, booed by a healthy economy. But in absolute terms, Christie's fared better than Sotheby's by more than a half of a billion dollars. Christie's is seen as the winner in the art collection duopoly in part because it has captured some gasp worthy deals in 2017 it sold a rediscovered Leonardo Davinci painting for a record price of four hundred fifty million dollars. And last year it sold the art collection of Peggy and David Rockefeller for a record price as well. Eight hundred thirty five million dollars under draw. He's ownership Sotheby's should prove to be a more aggressive rival, and that won't just be an in-person auctions, but online as well. The company intends to expand on a strategy that already started boosting its digital sales are collectors still politely raised their hands at live auctions to bid on old masters, but more and more often younger art buyers are bidding online, Sotheby's soul, two hundred twenty million dollars worth. Of art online last year up twenty four percent from twenty seventeen the Wall Street Journal reported, it's too soon to know whether taking Southeby's private, and pushing online sales will help Sotheby's surged past Christie's or not. But one thing is clear Patrick draw. He is already proved himself to be artful at growing companies now. We'll see whether he'll be successful at painting, a new future for Southeby's. No, I don't know go skydiving zip lining, or sitting a hammock reading a book than do yard work. I would will not. So sure about the skydiving part, but what if mowing the lawn was faster and more fun. We're all down for that, right? Couple of advancements from the mowing industry, just might make that possible. Sound like a race car. It's not that is the sound of Honda's mean more to speed demon that just won a place in the Guinness Book of rural records with an engine that could go from zero to one hundred miles per hour in just six seconds. It can hit top speeds of one hundred fifty miles an hour. That's so about one hundred and forty seven miles an hour faster than you can push your gas mower at a light jog. The mean mower can actually cut grass at one hundred miles an hour alas, but slow the speed fifty and it can Honda demonstrated that feet with an amusing video showing a man using walk behind mower to cut the vast acreage at Goodwood the Duke of Richmond's English castle, naturally, the one hundred nine horsepower, mean more left the proper Englishman in the dust. So if your yard is anything close to the size of the duke's estate, you might want that mean mower route of luck though there. Not for sale. Got your attention, though, right? Yeah. Yeah. That's the point Honda is fighting to keep its place, as a leader in lawnmowers eco-friendly electric grass cutters have grown up and their performance is now good enough to compete head to head with traditional gas, powered devices consumer reports compared to more from ego electric to a middle priced gas gas-powered one from Honda at close to six hundred bucks. The planet friendly ego will set you back two hundred bucks more than the Honda. But it obviously uses no gas requires less maintenance is lighter and quieter Honda's mower performs. Well, but it's so noisy that consumer reports recommends wearing hearing protection to use it electric lawnmowers like the ego still have one big challenge, though. Just like electric cars. They'll only go so far on charge. The ego will run about an hour before you have to juice it up again. So if a speed demon lawnmower isn't in your future and an electric when makes. Mowing more eco friendly but still a chore. What else could you do? Try a robot roomba the robot vacuum cleaner company promises to introduce a robot mower in Germany in the third quarter and bring it here to the US next year. But you better really hate mowing. Because it will set you back somewhere between nine hundred dollars and oh, ten thousand dollars. I think I'm just called kid down the street. Did you the first ingredient in this cliff fire is Brown rice, surro-, which is just another name for sugar? This kind of ours. First ingredient is almond which is just another name for almonds taken on face value. The attack ads sounds fairly gentle. But it's a skirmish in a row ward a win. From wondering, I'm David Brown, and this is business worse daily. Happy Friday, everyone if you visit the website of remind maple syrup producer, the maple Gill, you'll read, what looks like a joke. So a chef a chemist and a Wall Street defector walk into a bar it begins. Well, in fact, the leaders of the maple guild, which launched in twenty thirteen are completely serious. Unlike the homegrown syrup producers that have populated the crap since the eighteen hundreds, the maple guild is run by someone from Wall Street, founder, Bob Sol as an executive with fiero. Comex Montreal private equity company that acquired the company two years ago from its base on twenty four thousand acres of Vermont woods, the guild has set it sights on becoming Vermont's biggest organic maple syrup producer. It has a good start. It owns more maple trees than any other. Single producer in the world in doing so it's challenging the powerful federation of Quebec maple syrup producers, that organization union more than thirteen thousand independent producers sells seventy percent of all the maple syrup purchased worldwide as a legal cartel regulated by the Canadian government. The federation sets syrup prices last year a barrel of syrup was worth twelve hundred dollars. That's eighteen times, the twenty eighteen value of crude oil as Vermont public radio said last year maple syrup is liquid gold. No surprise, then that challenger with roots in Wall Street would see an opportunity in the Vermont woods. A chance to break the whole federation has on our taste buds, and our wallets, the rivalry between the maple guild and the federation is such big business that it attracted the attention of none. Other than Bloomberg, which is typically more interested in Microsoft and Maserati than maple syrup. One reason why the maple guild can entertain such huge ambitions is the technology is come to the old fashioned industry maple. Gill sap, steamer can turn twenty two hundred gallons of sap into fifty five gallons of syrup in fewer than ninety seconds. Bloomberg reports in a traditional sugarhouse that same process can take hours even days because of new production techniques maple syrup output tripled between two thousand two and seventeen. Even as climate change was shortening the sugaring season, and making it far less predictable still the maple producers will keep pumping out as much syrup as they can feeding our insatiable desire for the stuff sales are growing fast as consumers look to replace white sugar with natural sweeteners as a result maple syrup is turning up in just about everything from yogurt. Energy drinks to coffee and beer as it taps into this growing market. But maple guild isn't just fighting the federation, it's also scrapping with two large decades-old, Vermont syrup producers butter not farms and Kuhn's family farms, like the Canadian maple cartel. You can bet that neither of them will go down without making things very sticky for the upstart maple guild. And this is business wars daily on this Thursday, June thirteenth, it's a question. We've been asking for years. What does it take for a bookseller to survive in the age of Amazon, and we may soon have an answer Barnes and noble? The beleaguered bookstore chain is up for sale last Friday at announced that it had struck a deal to be acquired by the owner of the UK bookstore chain Waterstones for about six hundred eighty three million dollars more than two hundred million dollars of that value is the assumption of Barnes and noble debt. It turns out, though, that the brick and mortar book business may be more desirable than most investors assumed on Tuesday. The Wall Street Journal reported that Barnes, and noble may have another suitor a book distributor called reader link, the journal reported that reader link may bid higher than its rival Waterstones owner, Elliott management corporation, a hedge fund, reader link could. That bid as early as today or tomorrow because Barnes and noble would face a penalty for ditching its deal with Elliot, it would have to pay the hedge fund four million dollars. If it pulls out by Friday after June thirteenth, however, that break-up penalty would climb to more than seventeen million dollars though, not a household name almost every book lover in the country has been touched by Chicago based reader link. It is the nation's biggest distributor of books to mass market change like target, WalMart and Costco, since its beginning with a single bookstore in New York in nineteen seventy-one Barnes and noble grew by offering a high volume of books and undercutting the prices independent stores could offer Amazon's growth made that strategy, largely obsolete and the company faced many management challenges as well today, it is squeezed on one side by Amazon, which reportedly sells fifty percent of all new books and independent bookstores which are growing after closing many stores. Recent years at now has just six hundred twenty seven locations nationwide publishers, and literary agents which still rely heavily on the existence of Barnes and noble appeared to breathe a sigh of relief. At the news of the Elliott sale last year. The hedge fund bought Waterstones the UK's biggest bookseller Waterstones had been losing money for years under new ownership. It's now turning a profit if the Elliott deal goes through Waterstone's, CEO, James daunt would also run Barnes and noble. The hedge fund announced the Daunte would plan to turn the American chain around by allowing individual bookstores more autonomy to serve their communities. Making Barnes and noble run more like a large collection of independent bookstores, no word on what reader links strategy would be yet. But already this story's turning into a real page Turner. That's the pitch that a little known cable company called all tees is making as it goes up against cellular giant Berezin. The New York City cable company says it will debut its new service this summer all tees Mobile's monthly data plans will cost between twenty dollars and thirty bucks a month. The company says, although it hastens to say those prices, aren't yet written in stone. So what's the difference between cell phone service from a carrier like Verizon and mobile service from a cable company? Well, first off, you typically have to be a customer of the cable company in order to get it or be willing to switch cable companies. Comcast and charter started offering their packages in the last two years. Their primary goal isn't to turn a profit is to keep you from cutting their chords over the last several years cable companies have. Been suffering TV viewers say goodbye and Hello to streaming services like Netflix, which are usually cheaper in response. Cable companies are trying to lure customers in with cheap cell phone service. They do that by tying together their own wifi hotspots with wholesale capacity purchased from wireless carrier networks. Comcast xfinity mobile service, for instance, employs Verizon's wireless network all tees promises to do the same thing using wholesale capacity from sprint. But I'll t- says it'll be the cheapest mobile service on the market cable companies. Don't typically compete with each other. They're geographically bound, you're much more likely to weigh the choice between all tees or your local cable company, and a big carrier Verizon's, unlimited monthly data costs, eighty dollars a month sprint charges, sixty dollars. Budget minded customers have warmed up to cost-conscious cable data plans Comcast, which began offering it service in two thousand seventeen now has almost one and a half million. Cell phone customers that's up from zero so growth has been fast, but it's still a tiny fraction of horizons one hundred million customers. Furthermore, teases new service will have plenty of fine print as there, always is with mobile service, still, people sick of paying high phone bills, and isn't that all of us will welcome more competition. You'll just have to decide whether you wanna cut that cable cord or whether the carrot of cheaper, cell phone service, might convince you to remain tethered. From wondering this business words daily. From wondering, I'm David Brown, and this is business wars daily. Happy monday. Everyone put together businesses on four countries in three continents. In what do you have a merger, so massive? It could up end entire industry automaker Chrysler maker of Jeep Dodge Ram and Alfa Romeo vehicles proposed just such a merger to Renault last week. The offer comes after Fiat Chrysler spent years courting other potential partners, including Ford, Volkswagen, and even General Motors. Should the deal go through, it would make the merged company, the third largest automaker in the world following Toyota and Volkswagen? Currently General Motors holes that third-place lot Fiat Chrysler, is seven, the story is a dramatic when almost fit for a movie it involves the son of Italy's richest man, the arrest of a CEO, the death of another and even the president of France now, bear with me here while I untangle it for you. Fiat UC used to be enormous at one time it produced up to seventy percent of all of Italy's cars, its, owner was Playboy's, Yanni Anneli, who was so wealthy in powerful. He was considered the uncrowned king of Italy. According to the Wall Street Journal in nineteen Ninety-seven and yell. He's twenty one year old grandson, John Elkin joined the family business, but FIU, had weakened considerably by two thousand three Fiat was in enormous debt, then Johnny Ellie died, leaving the young L. Con in charge of an ailing empire Elkin convinced his family to increase their investments and bailout Fiat. He also hired a new CEO Sergio Marchi ONA who turned the company around in twenty eleven Fiat was strong enough to acquire the bankrupt Chrysler although successful Marchiani had a reputation for being a brutal negotiator, a reputation that quashed potential mergers, he died last year leaving the diplomatic Elkin in charge. And that opened up the merger possibilities. Meanwhile, Renault has had its own share of drama Renault his long been in an alliance with Nissan, but that alliance has been shaky since the Japanese arrested alliance. EEO Carlos Goan last November on suspicion of financial crimes Goan has denied the charges. Fiat executives say the two companies would share infrastructure and technology, but would not close plants or fire workers, French in Italian unions would have protested layoffs. The Wall Street Journal reports France owns a fifteen percent stake in Renault. The proposed merger is so delicate that Renault ran the idea by French president Emmanuel Macron, mccrone gave his blessing. Renault has responded to yachts bid with interest. The deal comes at a time when every major car company is developing, or already selling electric vehicles, and many have autonomous cars in the lab or on the drawing board carmakers need billions of dollars to develop driverless vehicles one factor prompting off. Oh, exacts to combine their resources. But analysts say a global marriage this complicated could take a year to put together and some observers warn that what looks good on paper can be extremely hard to pull off after all merging technologies is one thing merging personalities and cultures. That's something else in tirelessly. From wondering this is business wars daily. Hey, if you like our show, take a second to give us a five star rating and review on apple podcast. Would you.
