I'm Tammy trujillo. You're listening to Bloomberg business of sports from Bloomberg radio. This is the Bloomberg business of sports show where we explore the big money issues in the world of sports. And we are back more with Harold Reynolds on the MOB network throughout the postseason as it will be network is airing live coverage before and after every game. MLB network is also airing the ALDS and ALCS in Spanish this postseason, which brings me to the point every time I'm watching you guys, I got my pencil and I got my paper and I'm trying to set the odds up and everybody knows where I'm going with this guy. Scarlett has got that look like you degenerate bar. What do you think a gambling in baseball? I know it's sounds like a tired subject. But it's big, it's huge, more states are coming on in game action of betting. It is here to stay. Oh, it's here to stay. And so right on the same lines with fantasy, you know, I think fantasy really propelled football and everything else. And it's not even really as much about watching the game as it is about falling players. But I think most of the baseball came to the conclusion of it's involving the fans so much that you have to open the doors to it. So that's why he starts seeing a lot more. I'm surprised. Where I played with the gambling and different things that went on with scrutiny, we had to go through after Pete Rose. You know, so it's kind of it shocked to my system, so to speak. Gambling, what? You know? But I see it now and I understand it angle with fan involvement and it really is an engagement for fans and it's helped the sport grow with people following it. So I think that's where they kind of had to side with, okay, here's what's going on. We have to hop in and get involved. Yeah, there's an argument to be made, though, that, I mean, and I get with legalized sports betting that you're going to have a lot of analytics and data so that people can look through them and figure out how to quantify their bets. But at the same time, with the explosion of statistics and analytics, we've seen other sports like football or basketball get more exciting, but there's an argument that the explosion of analytics and statistics have kind of ruined baseball has made the game more boring. Baseball was already very numbers have a very math heavy. Everything's done based on numbers in a way that the game is less exciting even though it might get a more optimized result. If you're just looking for wins. Well, you're dead, I'm scared. I think that's why we had to implement the rule changes we're seeing. The game slowed down. And it sounds like you're like, yeah. It absolutely did. Did we blame analytics and stats for that? Well, I really do. I think we look at the shift rule, okay? The increase of shifts, the defensive shifts where we're putting three or four defenders on one side to come up with the best plausible way to now. And then what we're telling hitters don't hit the ball the other way, batting average doesn't matter. We want you to hit home front. So if you guys have a problem, you're probably going to pull the ball. So then they throw defenders on one side of the field. And guys are hitting the ball into the shift instead of a way. And as a result, there was no base runners that run scoring went down. The batting average for the first time is the lowest since they lowered the mount in 1968. So there had to be a way to increase action. And I do believe that analytically, yes, we slowed the game down because of the efficiency of the defense and being able to implement the numbers. You spent 12 years in the majors. Ten with a Mariners. I know we've talked about a lot of changes with the everything pitch clock this and that, whatever. But in your era, what has changed compared to what you're seeing now. Well, I think one, the thought of getting a hit, hit it where the aim. So to speak, it's a big slug and that doesn't factor in the thinking of a lot of hitters today. They're trying to hit through them or hit it over them instead of hitting whether or not. The stolen base. I mean, that was one thing that was just, you know, I'll tell you guys a quick story. I think David brought this up earlier. I wanted to have stolen base title in 1987. I was the only guy in the decade that won outside of Ricky Henderson. Ricky was averaging like a hundred stills a year. And in 87, he got injured about May, he already had 30 stolen bases. And so the last day of the season that comes down to me and Willie Wilson of the Kansas City royal. We both have 59. I still a base. I win the title. This is over, we're not in the playoffs. I get home the next day in Seattle. My phone rings because we were down in Texas and I get back home to Seattle. Phone rings and it's Ricky Henderson. Ricky. He always talked to me in the third person. He'll say, hey, playing cards are gonna go, Ricky, got a sweet hand. That's how he talks. So I answer the phone. Hello. He says, Henderson here. What up, Rick? What's going on? Congratulate me, right? Uh huh. And he goes, 60 stolen bases. You ought to be ashamed. Click and hung on the phone. Are you hung up on Ricky? No, he hung up on me. That's great. That is statement. 60 stolen basically got a shame Click, hung up. And so you were asking, what's the difference? I think Ricky's Paul is hair out right now, seeing guys still in third and 40 bases of season. And even have that before the officer breaking that 30 or 40 stone bases. So that brought that story on. I figured it'd be entertaining. I have to say, though, watching someone steal base, it adds that element of a spontaneity, right? It's a mini drama within the bigger drama of the game itself. I remember as a tigers fan, Cecil Fielder, stole a base. And we lost our minds. No, the first basement. And you talk about a big dude. I'm like, there's no. He's been doing steel bases. You need bigger bases, man. Obsessed with trying to do it. Yeah. Oh, Harold Reynolds, man. You are the man. And I am so glad that you came back to join us, man, as old friend of the show. Harold Reynolds, you can watch him on the MLB network throughout the postseason. You are so kind to join us. Thank you for joining us right here on the Bloomberg business of sports. I appreciate it. Enjoy the run and we'll see who wins it at the end. I'll talk to you soon for sure. Thank you. Take care of them. Thank you. Harold Reynolds, man. You always enjoy talking with him. Especially when he compares the differences between when he played and the game today and he's right, I enjoyed watching the stolen bases. It's that was a fun part of the game when I was much younger and didn't have as much gray in my hair. It was exciting also to see Ricky Henderson and whether he is going to curl his fingers up into a ball. There are little tells, not that I'm a Ricky Henderson expert, but you

I am a native detroiter, so my first love, the tigers, but I'm gonna adopt it son of New York next, it's the mets, and I'm not gonna lie when I saw a recent Saturday Night Live. Colin Jost. He says, and they lit up the Empire State Building blue and white for Aaron judge in 62, and the next shot you see is an outhouse in flames and meanwhile, the mets fans are showing their season up in flames. And I'm like, man. Someone mister met. But it was funny. I'm not gonna lie. What happened? Harold, what happened to the season? How much time do we have? At the end of the day, there are big performers that didn't perform at the end in the postseason. You know, down the stretch, they got a little tired, I think, a little fatigued that did have some major injuries. I mean, shares are in the grime, fought through injuries, and it just showed up and max sharers in the playoffs. It just was never over the injury he had early in the season. He just never got healthy. And that was it. I mean, you're banking on Scherzer de Grom being able to pull a Randy Johnson and the church chilling for you and win a World Series that's happening in Arizona and just without those two lead dogs leading the way, that was going to be problematic for the mets. And that's really what happened. Okay, but what does it say? What does the Met's late season collapse say about Steve Cohen, the owner of the mets and his strategy in putting together a winning team? Basically, spending, spending spending. Well, I don't think he spent only one year, really. He hasn't had a chance to really dive into the spending. And I think now he's got the manager he wants and bucks showalter. He's happy to spend to drop Robinson Cano. Yeah. Okay, I get you. I get you, I won't push back on that, but I still think this winter will be the real truth of Steve Cohen spending. That's some huge free agents out there. Aaron judge, on his own team, he's got he's got the Grom's gonna be a free agent he's got Nemo created. It's gotta be real interesting this winter how the mets kind of dive in and really see the dynamic. You got Carlos Correa out there. You're gonna have Trey Turner's a free agent. It's gonna be some big names out there that can really impact the team. And we'll see what happens and if you really dives into spending, which I think it will. Well, you make a great point. I mean, the free agent market is gonna be red hot this year. And you mentioned a few of the names. I mean, who's the best fit for the mets? Let's assume for one second. You mentioned to gram nimo Diaz and obviously Chris basic they're all going to be free agents. I mean, I think going to focus on the pitching staff, I mean, my goodness, they could use some bats there. I mean, where do you think the focus should be for Stevie Cohen? Well, I think they definitely need some offense. You got to send her in still on your pitching. Everybody does. But I think there's different ways now to increase that pitching bullpen or whatnot. They didn't have a left handed out of the pen that really was that dominant lefty. They need that happening. And then your own closer with the trumpet. He's a free agent. You know, so you got to bring Diaz back. But back to point, again, I really think this is going to be an interesting year for all the owners and baseball because remember last year started off as a lockout. That's why I was playing the World Series in the November. And you know, when we were locked out and you can't talk to free agents and you can't negotiate with anybody until February and March, April, you know

We watched his patterns and determined early this morning he was on a mission to kill, he was out hunting. 6 people who have been gunned down in the deadly string 5 in Stockton won in Oakland stretching back to 2021, police still don't have a motive for why the victims were targeted. "Are announcing an arrest Saturday in connection with the series of killings that has gripped the California city and the national headlines Stockton police chief Stanley mcfadden broke down how the arrest came to be. The arrest happened in two parts. One was community tips and the second was good old fashioned police work. 6 people have been gunned down in the deadly string 5 in Stockton and won an Oakland stretching back to 2021 all are tied to a single weapon police said earlier this month, 43 year old Wesley brownlee is now in custody. He was arrested around 2 a.m., police remain unclear about why the victims were targeted. None were robbed or beaten in the killings all took place within a few square miles of each other. In Seattle Saturday, the longest playoff game with no score in Major League Baseball history took place the first and only run was scored in the top of the 18th inning as the Astros swept the Mariners in the divisional series, rookie Jeremy Pena was the hero with his solo home run. I'm Chris. This is masters in business with Barry Reynolds on Bloomberg radio. I'm Barry rid holtz, you're listening to masters and business on Bloomberg radio. My special guest this week is Tom ran pula. He is the head of adviser services for investing giant. Vanguard where he has worked since 1988. So let's talk a little bit about the Vanguard effect. My friend Eric balchunas, who is a Bloomberg intelligence analyst, wrote a column a couple of years ago called the Vanguard effect and eventually turned that into a book, the bogle effect, where he points out not only has Vanguard driven down costs for their own clients. If that was the end of the story, all right, it'd be an interesting little tale, but what's happened is through market forces and competition, everybody else in the financial services has been forced to follow suit. And Beltran is calculates its hundreds of billions soon to be a $1 trillion in cost savings, tell us a little bit about the Vanguard effect. Yeah, I think it's true. I agree with Eric that Vanguard are set up structurally to drive costs lower, became very competitive, investors want a low cost, came to Vanguard and droves. Competitors had to respond or not grow. And so they cut price, which we all know that compounds over long periods of time, and it's a good thing for investors. And we saw that as we started to really grow in the U.S. that took effect in a big way. But I'll tell you the first time I heard the headline, the Vanguard effect is I went to London in 2008. We launched our first set of funds in the UK in June of 2009, and right before that, a couple of our competitors, before as we're actually officially out, they cut the price. And there was an article in the FT and it talked about the Vanguard effect. We didn't even launch yet. We weren't even grown. We didn't even know if we're going to be successful. Just the thread of moving into a space. So how does Vanguard think about competitors? A do you even think about competitors or do you just focus on doing your own thing at a certain point you have to be aware of what's going on in places like state street or BlackRock or wisdom tree? Yeah. Look, we're certainly aware of the competition, but we've always said, do what's right and customers will follow. And so for us, it's very, very easy to do what's right. We just don't have any conflicts of interest in any decision making. We have. It's all about the end investor. So you only offer them quality products. You don't go to fads so they don't get burned. You communicate very clearly and candidly about the risks. You know, you talk about return, but talk about the risks as well to manage expectations. And when you do what's right, you get a lot of trust built up and you grow. Really, really quite intriguing. So should I not hold my breath waiting for the Vanguard crypto ETF? Is that it's unlikely we'll have a crypto ETF Barry. The way we look at crypto is it doesn't really have an intrinsic value. It's more of a supply demand thing. So that feels more like speculation than in commodity than an investable asset. Exactly. But the technology behind crypto is pretty interesting. And there's some great use cases for that. And we think that's the future in many aspects of financial services market. Really interesting. All right, so we mentioned belt unis book. Let's talk about Robin wiggle worst book trillions. You know, we all sometimes feel like the area we work in our space, oh, I know the history that I'm really knowledgeable about that. But as I read that, I was genuinely shocked as to the history of both the industry and what took place in past investing in indexing, tell us a little bit about how trillions resonated over at Vanguard. Yeah, I thought it was really well written. I lived part of that revolution, if you will, of indexing, but there are certainly things that I learned from that book. Some of the other characters that were involved, some of the really early days and the characters around that as well. So resonated really well. It was interesting for me because I helped start our ETF business. Back in the early 2000s and a lot of those folks, I knew and we were trying to get these things going and it was a really interesting time. And once again, you kind of felt like you were doing something disruptive. And really exciting. But I thought it was a fascinating history. I would recommend that book to anybody that's interested in investing at all. I think it's just got a great history of something that was super disruptive, but maybe a little bit more of a slower burn than people might think. Yeah, no, absolutely. It was definitely a slow burn. And then it exploded. And I think to some degree, I think the inherent advantages of ETFs over mutual funds are part of that. I know some people like the ability to just buy when they want to buy and not have to wait till the end of the day and get mutual fund pricing. But to me, the single biggest advantage of ETFs seems to be enormous tax benefit of not paying for somebody else who's selling. Explain, first off, if mutual funds were introduced today, would they even be approved if it was a new product? Wait, this is much worse than ETFs. Why would we want to prove that? How do you think about the differences between the two products? Yeah, look, I think mutual funds are still a very good product. They may not go away in the two short of term, it's a really good product. I think there's some benefits to mutual funds. If you think about 401k plans, they really, you read my mind. They certainly work well in a quality qualified retirement. You need an ETF. You only need to strike an NAV once a day. So there's that aspect of it. Index mutual funds are pretty tax efficient as well, not quite as tax efficient for most as the ETF. You still have that changeover and I recall when something like Tesla was added, it had a big disruption. The
