"Mitch Mitch Corn used to say that all the time. Ooh, or Jim Corsi, you've got beautiful legs. Like I love it. Thanks for the compliment, but he's got beautiful legs. So I think he would fit perfectly. Now what Don Granado has done as a coach in Buffalo has been, let's build the identity that we can score goal. Cause that's really hard to do. And then we're going to work backwards and kind of tweak the defensive side of the game. Um, so maybe it looks different next year, right? Because they've already built that identity that Thompson and Tuck and Skinner and Cousins and Quinn and Paterka and even Middlestadt to that extent, like they can provide offense. Maybe now it's the work that needs to be done on creating that defensive identity. So maybe you don't need a goalie that embraces chaos as much as Levi does. But I still think that that's their best option. He's their best goalie right now. Do you want to trust the college goalie to come in and take you to the promised land? I mean, that's the, that's the question Kevin Adams has to ask himself right now. I, I'd say yes, because I like to play craps at the casino and roll the dice. But that, you know, crapping out on your first hand is never good. Well, as we said, we know they're in the market for a top 4D. Marty, you've got a busy day ahead. So you are going to bring the red book and I get to see all of the different colors and all of the different homework that you've done in, in compiling this. Yeah. Yeah. See, I got, you know what, I have a great little, I got to find it, but you guys talk about goaltenders and the question that I've been asked a lot lately, and we'll wrap it up with that because I do have to go, um, is do you need a top tier goaltender to win a Stanley Cup?

"Player, they'll move the line for that specific market, but oftentimes they won't, they won't take all the derivatives of that and start moving all of the other lines. So that's where we get all these off market prices, different sportsbooks. That's why I always preach line shopping for these exact same exact reasons that you're talking about. Each of these sportsbooks are gonna have a different quirk or some team that they're favoring more than others just because of the people that bet at that sportsbook are betting that specific team. Yeah, I'm having a really tough time. I don't know if you feel this way as well, but I'm having a tough time myself sort of wrapping my head around handicapping the Eastern Conference and what I expect from the postseason because I mentioned sort of the gauntlet that is shaping up to be I mean, I think everyone by now, especially those in the show knows that this top 60 is in the league by a point percentage and by goal differential now are on the Eastern Conference. Here's a fun stat for you. Those 6 teams, the top 60 teams are a 106, 29 and 21 against the west this season, which is like a over 7 50 point percentage. So there's clearly this massive power imbalance, I guess, skewing towards the east and unfortunately for those teams, they're all going to have to take each other out, right? Like a team like the Devils, which I do like right now their path, most realistically shaping up to be the rangers around one, which is pretty much a coin flip. The hurricanes in round two, and then either the bruins, the leafs or the lightning in the Eastern Conference final, just to get to the western, to the Stanley Cup final. And that's just brutal. So even if I do like their own team quality, you have to account for the environment around them. And that situation itself is pretty weak and that applies to, I guess, every

"Right, and like the things about these trades as well that people need to realize, look at the Ryan O'Reilly trade, for example, right? Okay, it shifts the leafs odds immediately, but the leafs I'm not saying that they're necessarily done here at the trade deadline, but the likelihood that they can acquire another big name player that's going to move the needle for them is almost next to nothing. So if you don't get that original line move, now that line settles at whatever it is now leads to win the cup in the 9 to one ten to one range for Stanley Cup winner. Well, now you've just kind of lost all the value on the leafs anyway. So you got to be very quick to this stuff as well. If it's a breaking news thing that happens and you think that it's going to make a major impact, you got to get on it quickly. If that trade does happen and you don't get on it quickly, now you could potentially look to other teams exactly like you said Dmitry where, okay, this team is likely to make a move. I think they're going to upgrade here. That's not reflected in the market right now. If you want to take a stance on that and you firmly believe that one of these teams is more likely to acquire one of the big name players, then go for it, but it's not, I mean, it's almost not worth the risk of doing that just because you're not going to get that advantageous of a price. So I forget if we talked about this when I had you on last time because it was pretty close to the playoffs as well as kind of this point of the season. But I'm really interested in the idea of whether it's statistically better to or more lucrative potentially to just be playing these series individually once we get into the playoffs or whether you are better off kind of planting your flag if you really have a lean one away and going in with a futures approach you mentioned kind of like tying your money up that's one of the issues of course. I think the other issue, especially if you're going the Eastern Conference route is it's shaping up to be such a gauntlet that I do think it kind of scares me off from feeling confident about any of those teams, even though I like each of them quite a bit for a variety of reasons because they're going to come across so many obstacles along the way that it just scares me off from thinking that they're going to be able to kind of jump over all of them without having some sort of an injury or some sort of a random puck like thing along the way that ultimately undoes them. So typically speaking, these futures markets that we're talking about, the sportsbook has less confidence in pricing these markets. So you typically see this being a higher hold. They charge more. The VA got these types of markets is a lot bigger than it is if you're just betting a game to game on a nightly basis.

It's exciting. I in preparation for this show, I went back and listened to some of the ones we've done in the past. I think we've done about four or 5 PDO cast together. And my favorite of the bunch was actually the first one we did, which was all the way back in December 2018. I was staying in a nice little Airbnb in Toronto and you came over. We had a couple of beers. We talked about the state of sports gambling and how it relates to the NHL and I think at the time in listening to it, like the NHL had just signed a deal with Ben MGM or something and they're like talking about unveiling all this new tracking technology and data during their broadcast to allow you to do live prop bets while you're watching games from an arena and stuff like that. And 5 years later here, not that much has changed. I feel like we could just kind of replay that episode and it would be pretty valid for the most part, which is interesting. Potentially alarming, maybe frustratingly so that not that much has evolved or adapted over time. But here we are. Yeah, I remember that pretty vividly as well. I mean, it's sort of a criticism of the NHL, but not really when you consider the fact that pretty much all of the major North American sports right now are in that same ballpark where they've just kind of been slow to react. You obviously a lot of advertising of sportsbooks during games, but the product itself is very, very similar to what it was in 2018. So definitely looking for that evolution to take place at some point, but right now I think we're still in the very infancy of sports betting. I know it's driving a lot of people crazy watching the broadcasts and the incorporation of sports betting into it, but it's only going to evolve over time. It's just a matter of when that happens. I will say, though, I know you're a big NFL guy. Watching some of these broadcasts, I believe, like the Monday nighters in particular or whatever. I think they do a really interesting job, not that it's necessarily very predictive, but in terms of telling the story of what you're watching and maybe kind of like giving you feeling back a few layers of the onion. Bring up these stats and times where it's like there's a completion yards over expected or something or like it shows what the probability of this completion happening was based on all these factors.

From what are you and the athletic? I'm under skeletal. It's Tuesday, march 29th, and this is the lead. Welcome back to the lead. God, my pleasure. It's been a while. More hockey, I think. That's right. Well, that is my feeling in life in general. So I'm glad we agree on that. So Eric, we are just over a month away from the start of the NHL playoffs. So first things first here, have you started growing out your playoff beard? Well, no, I haven't. And I just find that the older I get, the less people want to see the graying stubble on my face. That might have been something that I would have done in my 20s and 30s, but I'll leave it to Joe Thornton and the rest of the National Hockey League players who are much younger than me to do that. All right, well, Eric, we wanted to run through some of the big storylines and teams to watch as we move into the home stretch of the regular season here. So let's start with the team with the best record in the NHL, and that is the Colorado avalanche. Does that number one position reflect reality? Is this the best team in the NHL? Yeah, I think that absolutely is. The top line has been phenomenal throughout the course of the season. The emergence of nazem kadri this year as a bonafide number two center. That's made an enormous difference on that team because whatever line he's played on, he has driven that line. I'm back in return. He scores. Nauseam covering did it again. The all star gets to 60 points on the season. And there have been times this year when there have been injuries to Nathan McKinnon. And he is seamlessly stepped into that number one role. So he has played at a different level this year. And I think that that changes everything there. You know, they have a fantastic guy and kale mccart. Right off the bat Cale mccar. Sends it down the slot. The number of goals he's scoring this year, the creativity that he shows on offense, you know, most people believe that that overtime goalie started a couple months back as NHL goal of the season. Please watch this one here. Forehand backhand kalema Carr oh my goodness. That better be on number one on SportsCenter tonight here on ESPN. You kidding me? At this stage of the game, you know, kale macar is the clear favorite for the Norris, I believe. And then the other thing is their defense, they run one to 8 deep. And every team that has made a long playoff run in the last dozens of years seems to have an injury or two along the way. No team is better suited to survive injuries on the blue line than Colorado. Samuel Gerard isn't even playing right now because he's got an injury and he's someone that can come into the lineup before the start of the playoffs. So there are depth on the blue line is unparalleled around a National Hockey League and then the only other question there is is the goaltending good enough. And I think that there was a period of time early on when you might have said, you know, is Darcy Kemper the guy. I like him a lot. You know, I look at the way he played at the world championships last year. He has been a very good goalie in the past on some bad teams. And so I look at him now. I think it took him a little bit of time to adjust to the way they play in Colorado to adjust to new teammates. But I think he's found his stride in the second half of the season. I have no questions about emperor at all, especially if he stays healthy. So, you know, I'm not a betting man, but if you were to push all your tips in on one team, going into these class, Colorado would be that team. All right, next up, the team with arguably the league's two top offensive players has also been perhaps the most inconsistent team this season Eric, and that is the Edmonton Oilers. They also made a very controversial move when they signed a deal with the forward Evander Kane a few months ago. So Eric, is this team finally poised to make a deep run in the Stanley Cup playoffs or are we going to once again be asking if Connor McDavid's incredible talents are being squandered up there in Edmonton? Well, I think the biggest issue with edmondson is the goaltending last Saturday they gave up 9 against Calgary and cost cannon started Smith came on and relief. Flames had four goals on 11 shots now 5 on 12. And it's Mike Smith, the former Calgary flame. Hitting to the net here has cost me tonight is over. Vander cane has come in a good fit there, very seamless. Ryan nugent Hopkins has missed a lot of time recently. He's been back in the lab. So if you look at Edmonton's depth up front, very good. They are very strong there. Defense not bad, but I think there's a lot of people that are wondering why they didn't address the goaltending issue. The answer is largely for salary cap reasons. And I think that that will be a question mark going forward. They are relying on the fact that last year, Mike Smith had a very good year at the age of 39. The general manager there Ken Holland has a lot of faith in Mike Smith. But I also think that his hands were a little bit tied. The salary cap is a factor in today's NHL. So no, it is the goaltending holds up and they believe internally that it can, then Edmonton has a chance to make some noise in the playoffs. But if you look at all the other contenders in the Western Conference and examine the relative goaltending strength of the top teams like Colorado like Calgary, like Minnesota, that's the one area where Edmonton is really lacking. Okay, moving on about two months ago, the Vegas golden knights were tops in the Western Conference, but now this team is fighting to make the playoffs. They of course made that blockbuster trade to get Jack eichel earlier this season. So Eric, what is going on in Vegas? And can this team get it together down the stretch? Well, I think it's a couple of things. One is injuries, but the other is evolving chemistry. They've changed so much personnel there in Vegas since that first year when they went to this family Cup final as the golden misfits. And then the one thing about hockey is the consummate team game. I always kind of likened the systems that hockey teams play to being in the chorus line of the rockettes at Radio City Music Hall. If something is just slightly out of sync, it makes the whole thing not work. And I think that that's what's happened in Vegas. They've had to deal with injuries to so many of their key people. 6 of their top players are nursing injuries right now. The latest William Carlson, he's out several weeks with broken foot. And they've had to integrate some of these new faces, including Jack eichel, who I think the last two weeks has certainly been raising the level of his game and starting to feel comfortable after the surgery and comfortable in that new environment comfortable in the system there. So they're kind of a weird, dark horse sleeper because I think that if they get all of their injured people back healthy, if they make the playoffs, they could be a very dangerous opponent, because Mark stone isn't playing patriots, has been in and out of the lineup a number of times on paper with all hands on deck. That is a very strong team. But they've just been out of sync. So do they have enough time to get back in sync? It'll be a challenge. But this way, if they sneak in as a 7th or 8th seed, they're going to be a dangerous first round opponent for whomever they get. Okay, staying in the west, the Calgary flames are in second place and have given up way fewer goals than anyone else in the Western Conference. The team also has a lot of offensive firepower. So are the flames a legit. Stanley Cup contender in your mind, Eric. Yeah. Well, they have a traditional playoff success formula there, because if you think about how do.

"I'm distracted looking at my team. Being like i don't know about this okay. So caroline you've got you've got vegas. Rangers phillies seattle chicago. Pittsburgh columbus anaheim. What do you think yes. You'll finish top four. I'm unsure. yeah. I'm not feeling overly confident but i'm not highly disappointed. See i have to say that this pool. This pool is the most random completely crazy pool. Having played it. Several times is the most random completely crazy pool that you're ever going to enter. It's basically a lottery. There is almost no. I mean i understand. Some of the moves that dave and jeff. We're talking about looking at schedules. But there is almost no rhyme or reason to this thing and you'll be infuriated in the middle of the season when one of your teams loses someone. It is absolutely no business losing to. That's the best part about this. The way i looked at it from this pool is okay. You get like your top team. Obviously which for me is vegas. And then i was just trying to pick the teams that i really have no idea how they'll be but i like to think that they'll be pretty good. So that's the rangers flyers and then she right through seattle in there but more so chicago so those are teams. I'm happy to gamble on. If you weren't gambling this pool would be no fine. Like making ridiculous picks in the middle. It would be no fun. So i totally support that. Are you going to update us throughout the season. They're going to be like going to be going back and forth so every night. We know who's got the cup and who's got how many days man that's going to get unhealthy fast. Chances are are one person i mean. There's a good chance one person wins both those things it happens. He's going to be losing. So amber your teams are colorado vancouver. Florida washington toronto. Ottawa montreal and buffalo. You have replaced. Ryan smith as captain canada team. What kind of tell you i. I think a very good chance here. Okay merrick you've got tampa carolina detroit edmonson. Minnesota's saint louis the kings and the arizona. Yeah i don't like my team. I want to treat it straight up for da's david's team. I like da's really all right. I do. I like your team. Da are you taking that offer a one for one deal. Yeah straight up. Also you my team for one hundred twenty five right and i've got islanders. Winnipeg dallas boston calgary new jersey nashville and san jose. Please direct deposit at cibc. I'll give you my account number. And dave the saying goes like this. Lord thank you. Oh lord for allowing me to be in the same studio as my king my liege elliott friedman feel free to dress it up. Dress it up our guys. Well thank you very much for your participation caroline and dave we thank you. Thank you guys for agreeing on this. And i by the way just so everyone knows. Jeff doesn't get a day or a point for tampa having the cop at the beginning of the year. No that's bogus man. I i won this thing. They get i get. I get one for day one. No no you. Don't they gotta win. Pittsburgh they got out of if pittsburgh beat tampa opening night. No get zero points for. No no i get to. I won the won the draft. That's got to count for something. You want shuffle from the commissioner here after the draft telling the rules. I dunno door. It won't be the last time. I change the rules in the middle of the pool door. David do no. There's no more canadian. Division like the actually have to play the atlantic and the metro and while not the method see. Now i'm sad. I didn't pick a canadian team or trades allowed with no rules bad canadian. Now this question killing. Because i've never seen one of these before but i think to make it fun. We should allow trades however my suggestion is so for example. If say jeff wants to trade. Detroit and detroit's held the cup for five days. I think he should keep the five days. The other person can't get the five days. Oh yeah no. Yeah a crude wins. Keep yeah absolutely then we could make traits wants. The season starts. Acc all your buffalo for vegas. Can i interest you in a coyote. Sierra leone for arranger. What do you think i want one of your canadian teams amber. I feel i feel like such a bad canadian. All souverain work on a deal. Now which one. You're dealing dave dave on the brady could shock of Negotiators here i'm. I'm not settling friday. There's no hometown discount for you. See see i'm sorry. Okay i'll talk to you in a week all right. Let's let's let the dust settle and we'll see where we're at ambers at the end of october with zero days with the cop. We'll see what he's i am. Going to go bonkers. Hey laptops who. Who's do you like. Whose team do. I like honestly kind of jobs. What i don't even let out of. Dude i don't even like i like i like numbers to i think he's got the best team. Just got some good low keys in there. That i'm kind of excited about going. Go sayers again amber colorado vancouver florida washington toronto. Ottawa montreal buffalo. Yeah that is good. Well i might not get anything on the back end there but we'll see i mean none of us might get anything on the back end because all about timing right. There's only one cup. Yeah that's it that's the thing it's not even about the team is just the schedules gonna play dictate some of it. Too bad teams. Get hot at the end. Yo let's go. Let's go red wings. Let's go coyotes. That's actually something. I in fact i only have two teams in the west back. Screw you know you can totally shut out west only play west and i only have you know. I don't have an opportunity to get my hands on the cup. Oh god what have i done okay. I'll trade. I'll trade into anita west team for one of these canadian teams. You think it through. Well i've got seattle anaheim chicago. Chicago is not liking what you got. You're saying vegas i purposely. Didn't mention vegas. Because i'm not trading vegas dollar us i do. What do you think those terms get you put in jail. Thanks very much guys. we really appreciate it. Thanks for having a smell s fund. Good luck to everyone but especially in tampa bay one here. We go enjoy guys all right. Thanks a lot guys so Jeff thanks a lot for Allowing yourself to be usurped for this one episode. We hope everybody enjoys it. And don't hesitate to the pool on your own. It's a lot of fun a..

"Go eighty two zero s ready or non. Lets me baby. David hammer gonna take colorado. And i'm next. I'm gonna take the vegas golden knights. Okay so i have picks four and five. I am taking the new york islanders. And i said i'm going off the board. I wanted one kinda out there. Pick a team. I think is good that maybe people might not think is elite. Good but i wanted it to be different. I am taking the winnipeg jets. That's not an off the board pick. I could see the winnipeg. Well would you pick them fifth in the league. I could see it. Honestly i can see the winnipeg jets winning the stanley cup. This year might be the best team. Canada alright then. Maybe i am not so smart hot. Take right there. Lakewood chevy off did with. The blue line are carolyn. You're up i'm gonna take The new york rangers okay. You're such a hipster. Cdc quote the big apple tv. I don't. I don't know if i'm just like i'm trying to have a plan here but i feel like it doesn't really matter if you know anything about this podcast. There is no plan. Just go for it. But was the tagline last year. Talking out of our butts yes nice ring to it amber. This might shock. If you could take vancouver. I like that. Did you bet the plus two thousand on winning the division plus twenty two hundred. Yes i think in couvert plus twenty two hundred to win the pacific division. Would you put down like three bucks. I'm not getting into that. But i i. I like what they've done. This off-season maybe i'm alone on that. I don't know merrick. You got two picks all right. I got to pick so my first one. So have gone to the atlantic. Once a with the tampa bay. Lightning defending champion. That's the easy one. let's go with. I mean see see with the hipster. Pick the new york. Rangers emerging team about alibaba. And that's probably where. I would have gone at this point to be honest with you. I will stay in the metro. And i will take the team that used to be the ultimate hipster pick that everyone has bit on and eventually the probably going to hit it. So why not this year. I'll take the carolina hurricanes and then with my second choice. Here's what i'm thinking my thought on this one is whoever's left with the cup at the end said there are always teams that bowo around trade deadline and the pressure's off and they go on a little bit of a winning streak and rector lottery. Odds i'm going to go off the board. I'm gonna take the detroit red wings strategic. That's a lot of thinking on their. Steve is too much thank you. Yeah got me thinking to gandhi. It's nice jeff that you actually for once thought before he started the podcast dave. I'm gonna simplify things. And i'm gonna take my talents to south beach. I'm going with the florida. Panthers surprised took that long actually for someone to take them there. They're a big hipster. Pick this year. There's no vote that see. Do you think this is a hipster peck. I'm just gone through the metro. And i'm gonna take the philadelphia flyers. She loves the new defense. Yeah that's what i was gonna take next. They're going to rebound heart-to-heart come back. I'm going to take the dallas stars and my second pick. I'm gonna take the boston bruins. Carolyn you're up. i am actually. I guess i should look in the west. I'm gonna take the seattle cracking. Wow speaking a hipster. Come on by the way on tuesday night. What did you guys think those seattle whites. I love dynamite. There's only there's only one thing about them. That shade of blue looks like when you're printers running at blue ink. That's the color. It is the only thing about than didn't dig. I love the roads the homes. I think they did a great. I'm with you just that shade of blue. It's like The printers out a blue ink. I agree. I like the darker. Blue towns on the ice same same. It was too neon. The fans have voted. They can't keep the shirts on the shelves. It's a winner amber. You're up. But i'm going with washington capitals. I'm always pretty hot on them. They have some concerns obviously in there an older skewing team but this is jeff mentioned trade deadline. Teams that be sellers will they. Certainly i imagine under any circumstance will be buyers knowing you know where the key players and their nucleus is so i'm go with washington and assume some big things. Jeff make your first pick and then we'll do a quick reset so everybody knows who everybody's got to did you too. I was gonna take cats around this point but that is now off the board i can't believe the edmonton oilers still available. So let's take them. Merrick edmonton oilers. So jeff. Making that i pick heading into round five. His teams are tampa carolina. Detroit edmonton da's got colorado vancouver florida and washington. Caroline's got vegas the rangers philadelphia in seattle. I've got the islanders winnipeg dallas and boston. You're gonna end up for that. All sounds terrible knowingly at this point no likes any other teams i am willing to. I'm willing to make trades. Okay so jeff. Let start round five. Let's go back to the central. Let me grab some minnesota wild. I know that got some pain coming up in a couple of years but their cap right. Now it's an exciting team. That line with zuccarello enjoy eric's anakin capris off. Look real good heavy. Second line defense looks good even without suitor in two good goaltenders. Take some wild action please. Dave amber there are few teams that have succeeded more in the regular season in the last five years than the toronto maple leafs. So they're going to be my pick round five. I'm taking the leaves. You know i. I have to say this. There is nobody at sports net. Who sweats more in canadian teams. Then dave amber. This is the greatest thing that has happened to all of us to see that. He's going to be sweating even more that he has money on vancouver and toronto this year. Excellent i was gonna say it sounded like you were talking your way into that. Thought you're gonna say so. For that reason. I am not taking in the back of his mind. See he's it's the passion that pays us all hashing. That pays us all. So there's two things it's the recap this to their students who ends the year with the cop. It's also accumulative. Who has the most days with the day talking your way into it. Okay yeah just whenever you need here to listen. Says like david is therapist talking and talking himself into taking the toronto. We're gonna be doing our trade deadline show days going to be like so. Let me get this straight. It's who ends the season with the calm. And how many days line on a couch. Right now dave. You have a scoreboard days. Update during your shows you're going to have to do. The math is complicated. You're gonna have to figure this out for me eliot. I'm going to hire someone to do it. it's your pick. I am going to go with chicago k. I have no idea how chicago is going to do this year. Just as an aside. Does anybody have a handle on chicago. They brought in a bow sicklets. Six new players. New goalie. Seth jones i have no idea teams as back. Lawyer is gonna win them. Some games never sleep on flurry and he's going to be motivated. Yeah and seth jones my goodness so you're right though like you don't know exactly what you're going to get. I don't know are. I'm gonna take the calgary flames and i'm going to take because i think i liked them this year to win a few more. The new jersey devils any player who comes on the podcast and gives a blunt and honest interview is worth ten wins. Chac us will singlehandedly. Win ten games for the devils because of that so no surprise and you took chicago calgary rather with matthew could chuck because those two. The blunt interviews. We heard that's true. I've got the all tire fire interview team going on here. The instant headline. Let's get this out while we're at the airport before we get on the plane here because they can't believe what matthew said quote all right. That's good see you're up. Yeah i am going to take a team that in the past. I've doubted and i've learned enough times never to doubt them. Even if crosby and malkin or injured to start the season burke's pittsburgh penguins stole my pets. You just wanna get scoops from burkey this year..

"Goes you good to be here. Can european everything. I got confused after you started talking. I'm not even sure what we're doing. I heard two winners. Well david that's normal. You should be used to being confused by me now so you'll just have to follow along. Okay i got it now before we go over. It's a snake draft as most pools. Go but before we explain the rules. What are we playing for. What are we playing for here guys. How much money does wanna kick in a hundred not as much as amber amber to the backyard and pull some money off the tree and floats at our way. How mel let's let. Da decide how much how much under this is. A full season thing k. Up around the cash. you've never been cheaper to borrow money right now than right now. David c should be okay. I'm here to take back. The empties the quarters under the coach. Okay here we go one hundred bucks. And i just wanna say. I'm happy to take jess money. And i'm happy to take caroline's money but dave if i win this if i win this in our first show of the postseason instead of your money i want you to introduce me by saying thank you lord for allowing me to be in the studio with my king and liege elliott freedom. Are you good with that man man. I better not lose. You better not win. our. I tasked almo- with coming up with the draft order. Armel what are you guys competitors. Welcome to the first annual thirty two thoughts since he's and stanley cup. Challenge for us to assign a fair and unbiased draft order. We will be hitting shuffle before the draft. All of you were asked to submit your favorite song of all time. David you chose christly good. Great song jeff's choice was love. The backstory is carolina's all time favorite. Indeed didn't see that one coming and finally here's elliot scott to track. No it's not ever the optimist. How fitting and feeling confident now business. All four songs have been added to a private playlist called draft order. The playlist has been precept to shuffle mode to keep the song choices random so the first song to play will represent the first overall. Pick the second song will be the second pick. The third will be the third pick in the fourth will be the final pick of the round in this traditional snake draft without further. Ado kit shuffle. Feel nervous. I realized that baby. Yeah that's right geoff merrick. Has i an eighth picks. So don't i start then with tampa as the defending stanley cup champions. They start with the cup. So that's my first pick correct because already been made for me. No you can pick whatever you want. You don't have to pick tampa now. I'll make it easy. I'll take tampa. We're gonna.

"We got four hundred bucks pot as we're doing here. Yeah okay all right. Two hundred four the most days in two hundred for the cup. All right beth luck everybody you today on the thirty two thoughts. Podcast a coup geoff merrick. Regular host has been overthrown. And i'm leading. This one is the in-season stanley cup. We have talked about this before on the podcast going back to my high school days when i was a lot thinner and i had one less bald spot. Basically the way it works is tampa. Bay starts the year with the stanley cup. They are the champions. Pittsburgh plays them on opening night. If pittsburgh beats them or the first team to beat tampa they have the stanley cup until they lose. And whoever has the cup at the end of the regular season is you're in season stanley cup champion. So what we're going to do. Is we have three other contestants besides myself or all gonna pick eight teams and one of us wins the pot if our team one of the teams we pick has the stanley cup at the end of the year. But there's also a second prize and that second prize goes to the team that has the stanley cup. For the most days. In the regular season there are two parts to win. Someone can win them. Both in theory elliott. This is the most canadian thing ever to winners. Come on well jeff. You always lewis. Who want to give you a better chance. Okay fair so here. We go our other contenders. Please welcome the regular. Co host of the podcast. Geoff merrick bill. Garin ahead on the show today and he says hello and he says. I don't know how you do it. Carrying elliott each and every podcast. Because he listens to everyone so bill garin sends along his best. Well that's why you have shown out with your name three times. The geoff show hosted by geoff. Merrick led by geoff merrick so trying to get the trademark jeff america will. We'll discuss at a later date. Continue host elliott. And please welcome our other. Two contestants representing jarvis collegiate dave amber and representing bishops straughn. School caroline cameron. What an honor welcome aboard..

"Kerry Price is halfway through. Now at age, thirty-three just turned thirty-three like last month at his current state. He's only halfway through making 10 and 1/2 million dollars a year off. Good for him, he's got what he's got the bag but also you can't fire a guy after they take you to the Stanley Cup finals. I mean it's just horrible Optics know it's just but it's tough especially now because with covid-19 up with what that's done for League salary cap. We don't know what that's going to be. He's got a, a full no-movement Clause through him being thirty-eight years old making 10 and 1/2 million dollars a year, which is a substantial number, but some point to pull them down, it may not be now, but, I mean, it might be now like, and that's and it's tough to say that off of them during the Stanley Cup. Like, it's weird. Sounds weird. To say, I understand that well, he might next year though. But at some point, you're going to need some more guys. Really this roster is not enough and when he's making 15% of your Jeep hit. It's problematic. Yeah, it's an albatross of a contract I think. I think we could very likely see it only get worse and again 38 years old is what they're paying him. You compared to juice, press got the Cowboys quarterback in the NFL, has the guy who's very good, but you still need to get him help. And I would argue these massively overpaid. It's, it's a guy who despite his value clearly, he's obviously, if you overpay a really good player, you can't give them help. Therefore, you can't win as much. I mean, you do still crippled your team, even if he's a good player. Yeah they've sent a couple of bad contracts. They they they took on Montreal, Shea Weber's is one of their defenseman, one of their benefits when he's he's I think Petrie's our best defenseman but he's a good player and he's on a he's making almost eight million dollars in his cap hit. He's 36 right now. Oh boy, they're paying him. Almost eight million jobs. Like in fairness, they, they went on a run like, I guess if you're the GM or like, well we risked it for the biscuit, we didn't win at all. But you feel kind of good to like hey you can justify it by saying we went on a run, right? Yeah for sure and Iraq. Now you on the consequently those consequences that you're not paying between price and Weber, you're paying two guys who are see them out of your salary. They said they're those two guys alone are making over a quarter, the salary cap off and they're 33 and 36. When so Shea Weber he actually signed this is another conversation about cap, he signed a 14 year 100,000 Ten million dollar deal with Nashville. This was back before they were caps on term and teams did this because they thought, if they, if they signed such a big contract, just kept hitting, the NHL is wage is, you know, the number divided by the years. It's really easy. It's that's your cap. And it's 210 / 14 that 7.8 and change. That's your yearly, cap hit. So teams are thinking, okay? What if we just signed Guys, these wage is ludicrous deals that they're going to retire before they get to the end of. So we can bring our yearly cap hit down. And the player says wait up. So making a ton of money. Sounds good and I'm doing a fun game and so it sounds good like you can sign me. Send me for 30 years, find whatever bring number down. It only helps the team if we do that. Yeah, so like when you use you pay them less money in the short-term to extend it out like crazy idea in the middle of Bobby Bonilla. Yeah, exactly..

I think you know my energy is focused on games to be right now and get that win. But we did a lot of good things kind of turned it around from Game one, and we're pretty happy with that. But you know, we just have to stick with with what works. And what God, is he yourself? That's kind of focus right now. What about the disappointment of still getting to play in front of only 3500 fans tonight? Coal? It will be really exciting for sure. Obviously, wish you could have more people, but, uh certain situations going on will still be loud and Proud to be in there, so we're really excited to get back home and plan from our fans. And I know outside. It will be pretty excited, too. So, um, yeah, We're just looking forward to Game three and have a fans in the building. One of the special things of working at Canadian Stanley Cup game is they're amazing tradition, and they're hosting a cup final in a venue other than the old Montreal Forum. For the first time in nearly a century, and it's the first Stanley Cup final contest in Montreal since June. The 9th 1993 when Paul DP Etro scored twice to lead the ABS to a championship clinching win over the L. A Kings at the Montreal Forum in Game five Rocket Rashard Jean Beliveau, even corn y a G LeFlore incredible history for sure something that lightning coach Cooper Totally appreciates being a part of two specifically at his absolute favorite hockey barn outside of Tampa. It's everything like just the way the seats go up how dark it is the banners, the history the presentation. The fans, the passion Um just it all culminates into you know you walk in there and you're like, Wow, Something special's happened this place for some time. He just has that feel. And so I think part two is my first ever playoff experience in the NHL was in that building, and, um, just it's a It's a special place and Much like all the original six teams. There is a rich history and in the past and and to see, as I said, like You're in there, you feel like you're part of something special, and it's just Great environment, and we're getting closer to making more hockey history with opening face off at the Bell Centre just ahead of Game three Tampa Bay at Montreal in conjunction with NBC Sports, You're listening to the Stanley Cup final on Sports USA. "Or whatever it's been so you know it but you like to see i mean what would be better than seeing a bell center sold out the crowd rocky and i could tell you they get one game like that. It would make a huge difference for that team You know. I remember my first experience going to the bell centre and playing a playoff game where it was fallen. I get out on the ice in a warm-up in their streaming and cheering the whole time. During warmup and like the pucks are like moving on the ice. And it's like that's that's the energy there's it's it's a really really cool place to play and i don't think there's ever been a game in the history of the time that i was in montreal where i didn't have my legs at the bell centre at a lot of that has to do with the energy in the building. So would that make a difference for players. I'm sure it would. I am one to know a thing. Or two about droughts because my baseball team had the longest in the history of sports and finally got to break it so it hasn't been that long for montreal but it feels like a really long time last winning the stanley cup in ninety three. And that's the last time. A canadian team won the cup. So i know this sounds crazy. 'cause they're all rivals but at some point. Does the entire country of canada. Want the haves to win to take it back from the americans or they're just too many rivalries amongst all the canadian teams allegedly allegedly. I heard that in in the media. I've heard it in different outlets. But i tell you this league fans do not wanna see montreal canadian's when the cop and you know i can tell you that there's no way there's no way they can try to spin a positive on it to say. Oh yeah we're happy. Canadian team won but real fans. Don't wanna see their rival teams hoisting the stanley cup. So i think that we have to be very careful and mindful of where some of these rumors coming from about all canadians wanting to see avia gene win. I think that the real canadian fans for their teams especially in toronto toronto vancouver but especially toronto. I don't see fans wanting to see montreal canadian's Lift us daily gump. I just don't see it. I want to know what to expect from these teams in game two tonight in tampa because like you said anything goes and playoff hockey. What do you expect though from game to montreal. You don't wanna go home down to nothing to a team like champa it's You know. I think to be able to skill one in tampa could change the series a little bit But how you went is so important. I think that they're going to need some potluck against tampa they're just such a good team So i think that you're gonna see montreal. Really played their best game in game two. They're going to have to ratchet it up and it's going to be difficult because montreal's a team that has success on their speed. They play with a lot of speed and pace upfront. There ford's forechecking but tampa has got just as much if not more and you know i just. I hadn't seen that happen to montreal. Throughout the whole play offs. I hadn't seen you know players being able to match their speed up fraud and i think tampa has the ability to match speed if not faster than montreal in a sixty minute game and For montreal they're going to have to try to play a little bit smarter with the buck and managing not to give any opportunities. You just can't afford to give him any rush opportunities big one tonight for the hab thank you. Pk for coming on. I'll be sure to look for your next time outside a club wearing flip flops bummed out there i can make a call perfect rate continue okay up next and dak prescott opens up about the importance of mental health. Goodyear knows when the season starts heating up so to the possibilities. Play off. Hopefuls are beginning to emerge and contenders are solidifying their position from here on out every game as a chance to create momentum to make the right past the right move to hit the perfect shot it takes momentum to build up to the moment but it takes everything to capture it. Goodyear more driven. Here's another story. I want you to know for a long time the. Nfl didn't seem like a place for sharing once dark moments. Admitting to struggles asking for help it was weak or soft to express your feelings and the nfl was a place for toughness a place that valued only the most extreme and stereotypical expressions of what it was to be a man just last year. We got a reminder. That sport isn't always a welcoming place for honesty in september cowboy's quarterback dak prescott. I opened up about the effects of the pandemic on his mental health and the death by suicide of his older brother. Jas the response from at least one. High profile sports media talking head was to criticize what he considered as an admission of weakness from prescott and a lack of sympathy for struggles. Yes the backlash was swift evidence of our progress on the issue but the fact remains there is still stigma surrounding mental health. Prescott recently sat down with sage steele to share more. You have talked openly about just that roller coaster ride that you were on emotionally. I mean understandably so with cova. How'd you pull yourself back up. My brother jas. He pulled me out of it as a big brother. Does i guess. And i was going through depression anxiety and the said i was learning like what it was and was talking to friends and like trying to figure out why was filling the way i was but because i was isolated was because i wouldn't be able to be around the people that i wanted to and make a daily impact or just beat able to smile and ask them how their day wasn't making better cova took that away from all of us so i mean i was asleep and It was tough. Did you talk to him about that. Takes my brothers like man. I'm struggling with this isolation thing right and he writes back. I'm here for you and my other brother. You know saying love you. Let me know if you need me. So i was almost like. Why don't wanna put my pain and my my depression and anxiety on them and jas no he. He's my he was my best friend. I mean teddy bear And that's exactly what he was. He was the comforting one. Yeah i mean to a week later. Finding that news out was yeah tough. What happened to jas. Yeah my brother. Last year. In the middle of the night i mean. Wanna say to around two o'clock in the morning his life and i mean just was devastating and to wake up the next day to my dad. Waking me up on this will never forget it. There's things in moments and emotions and situations in your life you'll never forget that exact fillon and that was one of them being awakened by my dad with literally must support system there to help me grieve and i realized at that moment. I told my friends and family that was around. That day is guys we gotta talk. We've gotta talk to one another. Because i didn't know he was feeling that we didn't know he was like that right and i even tried to be vulnerable to them. And but that's it it's not easy and that's why i come out and own front of the mental awareness thing and tell people men women powerful not powerful. Whatever you are we've gotta talk and it's an obligation for all of us to listen and to help in recent years the league and its players have realized prioritizing mental. Health isn't a distraction. It's a necessity in two thousand nineteen the nfl and nfl. Pa enacted a joint behavioral health agreement expanding existing resources available to players mandating team specific mental health emergency action.

Pk i think most people know about the years that you spent playing in montreal in your deep connection to that team but we did a little research and we found out about another former team member of yours with a connection to the final. And i'm talking about a video. We found on youtube of a young. Pk playing on the toronto. Toro's number fifty suman alongside a young steven stamkos. Charles tech turn to add to the total number seventy seven step. Stamkos down clutching. How old are you guys. Oh man i might have been stamkos. Cosc- you're younger than me. So i might have been. I don't think i was any older than seven. I might have been six around six or seven and myself had stephen. We've we've known each other for a very long time. Their parents my dad and his dad. Chris damp goes know each other So growing up played with them played with them on the junior canadians. What i was nine years old as well so Got a lot of respect for stephen and his family. They're great people. Happy seeing back in the stanley cup final again and more importantly i'm happy to see him healthy. You know that's a bad luck so it's great to see him back on the ice. Yeah i wanna talk about that. But i i have to ask. I know. there's a lot of margin for error when you're about seven years old. It was a peewee team. So a lot of pucks maybe That went in directions. That were unintended. But i still have to ask. If you've got a norris trophy winner league's best defenseman and you got a guy who's twice won the rocket rashard Award for the league's top score. Did this toro's team ever lose I'm not sure we did and if we did. We did lose. I'm not sure. Stephen and i were on the ice at the same time or even playing in the game so We had a really good team and the toronto. Toro's that was fun we We played a lot of summer hockey. I enjoyed playing summer hockey as a kid and it was always great to play with other kids that were just as good if not better than us. So there's a lot of competition but we had a lot of fun. Obviously know tampa won the cup last year. But as you mentioned it's damn missed. Essentially the entire series due to injury. How meaningful is it to see him back out there with the chance to win it and really be a part of the team as they as they make that run. Yeah i think that's important to them for me. I looked at stephen and his career and what he's been able to accomplish in its fees for itself of a handful of guys come to the league and are able to score as many goals as he has and have the success that he's had so you know i i think for him Being able to play now in a stanley cup final. You know you wanna win one and he got one of but to be able to do it again and be a part of it. Definitely is a huge motivation for him. But it's a huge win for the tampa bay. Lightning tab. your captain motivated to want to do it again. And it's tough. It's tough to win two cups But i think the tampa has got a really good chance to do that. And what steven stamkos motivated wanting to two boys that thing knowing that he's been a part of it but he was a huge part of when they won you know as their catechin as their leader up the is so many things. Go into that too tab. An opportunity to to play more games as playoff run. I'm sure as important to him. All right let's get back to your other other teams. You obviously played seven seasons in montreal. You have deep ties to that city. So you know as well as anyone how the culture of hockey can get in montreal. Can you try to even explain. How big of a moment. This series is for montreal right now. I don't know if americans really fully understand what this team and getting back to the cup final means to that city. It's a it's a big deal. Would you look at the the canadians for the past couple of years. It's been You know. I think it's been you know you look. During the pandemic they finished in twenty four or twenty third spot. They got into the playoffs based on a bit of a technicality. With the format at how they wanted to run it You know. And i believe they lost in the first round. You know the year before I'm not sure if they made the playoffs but it was first round out the year before that it was the first round out so you know as far as the fan base goes understanding that every year montreal canadian fans expect you to contend for stanley cup and it is important for the city of montreal. It's important for all the businesses in the city that have been struggling for for almost two years now to have people being able to go and sit on patios and get back in bars and watch the game to add that energy to the city. It just makes montreal a great place to be now especially coming out of the winter and the summertime. it's a great city to be on so For people living in montreal right now. They're having al time with the whole of of being able to celebrate a stanley cup. And i know that being there it's listened. We had many many runs in the playoffs. You know going to to eastern conference finals Pretty much every year. We're in the playoffs. So i know what it's like there and they're having fun right now. Is it at all bittersweet for the haves to finally make it back after that. Long drought without a full to the brim bell centre with fans enjoying the ride. I know they're trying to work to increase the occupancy but is there a little bitter sweetness to that it's difficult. It's difficult because you wanna have fans in the building and you're looking at on the road and you're seeing you know in the united states that you know it's flow capacity and we're not doing that. Here is very difficult because of the way the rules have been in canada. You know there's been really no exceptions to large gatherings and all these things over the past year now for two years.

"Hello and welcome to our ticker marks. The only fan led our stars podcasts. Long chris chambers and brian chambers and we are recording this in the almost like no really late times. So i i. I can't think i'm really tired. Yeah somehow it's still sunny where you anywhere i am. I'm in montana right now and we're on a three week vacation going seeing national parks so i'm really excited to be doing this and have fun but anyways that's not why people are listening to us but interesting segue. Let's let's talk about this real quick before we talk about the stanley cup playoffs and Holy crafted a tampa bay. Lightning manhandled the montreal canadians Right now and we haven't gotten a chance to talk about it but unfortunately Stephen johns has to retire from the nhl on from hockey in general and It's it's really unfortunate that at his age that's what he's having to do He's only twenty nine years of age and it. it's just been too much for him in there is a. We're gonna talk about a lot of stuff here but It is really sucks to see him. half to you know quit so early in his career and i mean he could have had another ten years ago to go. Yeah as well We we can talk a little bit about About stephen johns and What's going on with him but stephen johns. What he's decided to do is he's going to go out. And he is currently rollerblading the country and specifically more towards the northern side of the country. And he's gonna go from the east coast to the west coast to Bring awareness to mental health which That seems to be a big thing in. Today's culture is talking about mental health And unfortunately for him. That's kind of what led to his decision to To retire from hockey at the age of twenty nine. I mean the way. The way i saw was that his is head injuries that were causing it like not so much like his his mental health and then after he had to stop because of his head injuries. That's when he had the mental health problems that is that what you're saying about what happened. So he's yeah. 'cause originally stopped was because the headaches because like he was like like from concussion in who's not remembering things in. Saudi arabia has a great article. That i read earlier today. The talks all about it but Stephen johns this whole all started back in twenty eighteen When he was playing against the minnesota wild and The pain and the post traumatic headaches have just become more manageable with time. But that's when it all started but really the reason why he's Having to get out is because he just is just..

"It's crazy. I was born forty small. And when i was young i was dreaming this morning to see the canadians. Good to this got final. i mean just. I couldn't believe it by now. Well we've had a whole weekend for it to sink into you. Believe it yet. The hockey franchise with the most stanley cup banners and. The rafter is finally but to take to the ice in search of another banner. The montreal canadians will take on the tampa bay. Lightning game won a stanley cup finals. Tonight it has been a decade since any canadian team has had that privilege and we all of course know how it ended for vancouver in two thousand eleven adam gopnik is a writer for the new yorker so so have superfan adam. Good morning. good morning matt. How are you okay. But how are you feeling. We're on top of the world by. I'm blessed that my son who said university has come home to watch the final and perhaps fan. I am never had the chance to really live for very long in montreal. You were born in the united states. You were raised in montreal. You now in new york city do you do. Feel any divided loyalties on a day like today. None whatever of any possible kind. I i love new york and it's been my home for a long time but i am a montrealers through and through in a hab span by religious passion more than bhai sporting affiliation. I started watching the haves in nineteen sixty eight when i was eleven years old And have watched them win. Believe it or not met ten stanley cups. And they've represented for me a kind of continuity in the world. That i that i cherish. What are the team mean to you. When you were growing up meant meant everything. It was my way of getting adjusted to a new city and falling in love with it. You know one of the extraordinary things about the haves matt and i say this with a certain trepidation before An entirely national audience. Because i know every team has its own intense and passionate following but the montreal. Canadians are almost unique among the world's great sporting franchises in representing an entire region province. Or if you if you prefer a nation the only other one i can think of. Its bite like that f c barcelona barcelona soccer club which also like the haves long history of actually having catalan players. Local boys in the team. So growing up in montreal. The haves were the one thing everyone could agree on. It's one thing where the anglo francophone divide is is l- least is weakest. Always has been since the. The haves were born of sentry plus ago as a merger of french canadian and irish catholic players. So montreal for me. Was the montreal canadians. And lots of waste. That in savvy hitter bagels and smoked me the good things about montreal. But my my sense of what. Montreal is of all the wonderful things about that city A are anchored in My my my phantom. I have defended. What do you remember. But the last stanley cup win in ninety three i was actually here for the beginning of it and then i had to go to europe so i was tracing this pre internet match. Shows you how things have changed on the in. The international herald tribune. I have said to several people that this team reminds me. More that how's this for comparing halves vintages of the one thousand nine hundred sixteen which won the stanley cup in the ninety. Three team that everyone's talking about That was also patrick. Joakim team and it had larry robinson the great lehrer robinson at that point playing defensive game that strongly resembles the way shea weber plays now and it had a couple of youngsters of stefan re shea and claude lemieux. Who remind me very much of the youngsters on the team right now see. I've been a fan for more than fifty years. Almost exteriors and the thing i delight about this team is the kind of old people's home kindergarten. Merger of the veterans with these three grade. Kids some cake as we as we call him an nicks ziggy and co coffee. I always say nix. Zouqi looks like the tough local kid and kk looks like his sidekick and co caufield looks like the twelve year old and they can stop getting tagging along behind them. Is there any small measure of delight in the fact that they Stuck it to the toronto police their way to the stanley cup final. I to say there is. There was a certain amount of googling leafs choke in this family. I will not pretend that if there was there was not not so much out of any deep anti toronto sentiment montrealers or above that of course out a perpetual love of the underdog you know. We went in against that very good. Matthews martin teams being distant dismissed as such a degree that The coming back that that beautifully and dramatically was a was unforgettable. you're pretty philosophical guy. Do you think this team is destined to win the cup this year. I don't know. I had the good fortune or fortune to actually watch tampa bay play live against the islanders once and they are intimidating team. When kucherov headman start throwing the puck around you just shiver inside. Did that good I you know all the vectors are or putting positivity and i'll say that just anna likley. They've got the best goaltender they've got a a sound defense and they've got an ever improving offense they could be out in four. We faced that tragic possibility ability. But i have a good feeling. It's been a miserable fifteen and a half months. He wrote a great piece in the in the magazine. About the reopening new york. And what that meant in that city. What does it mean to have something to cheer for. Oh it's it's wonderful. You know we all spent. And i know that in back home in candidates been even more acute in some ways than here. We all spent so long in lockdown searching for something to cheer for other than long form danish television series that we could watch. And so having this feeling the world reopening in that in that emotive sense even if there aren seventeen thousand people in the bell centre The sense of connection. You know we love sports. I think math so much. Because they are the great remaining connector and all of our lives gray vehicle of community that we feel and having been cut off from community for so long having it in this. Newly ecstatic i think is is mentally jerry. You're cut off from canada. You can't be In montreal at the bell centre on the trigger some sort of way to sneak in. Which would i'm trying. But i guess in the absence of that when the team wins. How will you celebrate. Oh well we've got a steady supply of vietor bengals. Might one of my nephews make some much smoke. Meet in california hope will have some and will We'll have our hands gear on my son as they heretical blue shirt that he wears. I wear number twelve yvonne corn way. When i watched no-one in new york i will tell you truly that will notice it in any way. Nobody cares no one new york notice but we will have a party here in our apartment. Which makes you enjoy it even more. Perhaps it's something totally totally and it's in it's bewildering identity when you try to explain to new yorkers. Oh you see where montreal canadian's fans and so we live and die with just forget it. We'll just we'll go on with it the way we want to. You can't explain it to them but We live within balshaw. Good luck and great to talk to you as always adam. Thank you wonderful adam. Gopnik a writer for the new yorker magazine. And as you heard diehard montreal canadian's fan for more. cbc. "Clip from the from the closing press conference at the islanders lost the tampa bay lightning game seven mathew barzal with brock nelson At the podium really trying to keep it together and fighting back his emotions as best as he could never referencing veterans. Like andy greene see. I'm always interested in hearing young people talk about a stanley cup. Experience and older players talk about her stanley cup. Experience and the older players tend to generally cherish it more knowing how much it takes to get there and how long it takes and younger players. And we're talking to brad marchand hockey night in canada radio once After his bruins had won the stanley cup in two thousand eleven and it very much felt like in his voice in his mind. He thought well we're gonna win like three or four more of these things and he still still chasing it. Hearing mathew barzal talk the way that he did already at the age of twenty four is young guy he understands how getting there is really hard and he's been close a couple of times and listen to his voice in how he talks. You almost get the sense that he's wondering and my ever going to get this close again. What did you think of ourselves presser. You asked if he was coming of age. I don't know if i agree with that. I think it's just who he is. I think he really cares. Oh for sure this whole thing. You know you battle with your coach. Sometimes you know trotz has battled to get more out of them barzal. I'm sure his battle with trotz before it doesn't mean they both don't care or they don't have the best in mind for each other. It just means that trotz has enormous belief in what barzal can become and sometimes like a father with a son you have to discipline them in ways to make them get to that next level brazil to me. I loved watching him. These playoffs he competed. I never questioned his competitive ability or willingness to compete. I think there were times where he was so creative. The other honors in the ice didn't know what to do with it. And i think that's kind of what happened. Is i saw a lot of times. That teams against him tried to take away his passing options like he went in and he'd make a great entry or recreate some room and then it was almost like they said. You think you're passing anyone else. You're not passing the anyone else. And one of the things. People have told barzal as he has to be more selfish because people see that they see. He's a pass first guy and as a result if you take away his options sometimes. He's not as dangerous. But i think he's worked hard to improve all of that. I thought he competed a ton. Oy and i saw a guy who was devastated in the moment. So i don't think he mature that answer shows a maturity or anything like that. I just think it shows how much he cares whether we ever doubt that. Barzal wants to be an islanders proud to be nylander. He clearly really loves his teammates that he went out of his way to talk about guys. Like josh bailey. And andy greene. Who might never get this chance again like to me. It's not about him. It's about the group and I mean the way he played showed me how much he cared. And i'm sure he's going to be thinking about that one that hopped over his stick killer And that's that's tough. It's not your fault it's nothing you did but it just sits with you. Yeah ice man. I really you look at it and you say it's it's late night period and that's ice. That's not you know. I really thought after game five. If the islanders god through the first twenty minutes relatively unscathed they were going to win. The game and i just remembered the intermission thinking at the first remission thinking. The islanders are going to win this and of course. They gave up the shorthanded goal and and they lost. But i i gotta tell you. There was a time after one period. I said that's exactly what the allders needed. And they're going to win this game. And and i think know that even though they didn't get a lot of chances the lightning were as good as they were. I'm betting they felt the same thing after game. Five where they were down three nothing after one they thought if they get out of the first period scoreless they're gonna find a way to win We should point out as well. I know or reality of sports and you just deal with them. But all that without anders lee a remarkable achievement for the For the islanders at various times that we've talked plenty about mathew barzal. We've talked about ryan pool ach And the shot. Eller talked about adam. Pelech you know the emerging you know Sneaky norris trophy candidate Whose names should pop up on some ballots. Who else stood out for you from this. Entire islanders not justice series against tampa but from the entire run as far back. As you wanna go maybe even into the regular season who jumped out for you mayfield. And not just because of everything that happened in game six. I just think that scott mayfield as come from. You're you're almost disrespecting him by saying nowhere but nowhere to become a really effective player a really good player. Nobody thought he would be what he's turned into and he's turned into a heck of a player. I think mayfield would be that guy for me. I think beauvillier is a really improved player. But i if. I had to say one person i would say mayfield. So what now then for the new york. Islanders number of unrestricted free agents The trade deadline guys cow paul travis. Travesty jack a mainstay on the fourth line. In cases ezekiel unrestricted. Free agent there as well We talked about mentioned. Andy greene a couple of moments ago. He's a ufa some restricted Including ilias sarokin pollock Anthony pavilion michael cole. What happens now with the islanders. Well i called lula morello earlier on saturday. He told me everything he was to do. Starting with who's getting q. Oh yeah that sounds like glue for sure. So what are you saying. He told me every step of the way. Think you've ever said on this podcast. Great so there's some people who drove off the road hearing that. Well i look at this way. I would be surprised if they didn't have a good idea. Sarokin a restricted free agent right. Yes and after. He came over from russia. I would be very surprised if they didn't have a decent idea of what his second contract was going to look like. So that's one thing to me. The most important guy you have to deal with is paddock. He's a restricted free agent with our bright. He's one year away from unrestricted free agency. He's.

"Awful. You mentioned although the the players on this team and you go from you know kucherov. Two point to sara lee and stamkos etc. Right down to. Ross coleman like the thing that i love about tampa and do with all their men as well even like man erik. Cernak has a very definite end deliberate role on this team mike. Everybody has something that they do right like. Everybody has a job there like a bunch of worker dogs and they all have their assignment and they do it like. It's a marvel. And i'm building this up like david versus goliath. Your house montreal going to do this but the more you see tampa the more. You can't help but just being flat out impressed with this squad it'd be a good final. I'm really going to enjoy it. I i. i'm really looking forward to this final. Just make it go long. I would hate for it to get to this point. Because how hockey would this be elliott to get to this point only to see a sweep like i don't want to give this mantra. It's not going to be a sweet. I know i hope. It's i hope it's i just don't want this. If this mantra canadians story is going to end in the final. And they don't make. I will sleep for a week and guell jammies of his a sweep leading the gravity of that just sinking for one second away. Do you think. I was gonna listen to that garbage. Podcast tweeted of course. Of course you're not interested in quality. griffin's podcast talked to the gas for our. Yes all about the. Griffin's may experience there oliver's chance you'd love it you learn a thing or two along the way too. Yeah but i will sleep and gwen jammies for at least a week if it's a sweep. Oh man i can just see i can. Just i'm going to drop my tweet and save it. Send for the jammies hashtag go. Griffin's go if there aren't well jammies. I will just take won. T shirts and i will take a red marker and i will spell wealth on it w e l f go. Yeah yeah ok well done i. Can we all tell you when to western. I see now. I'm split because i'd love to see you do that for two. I don't want this to end and a hockey fashion like the hockey story for the stanley. Cup playoffs is you can get to the final as an underdog but generally are not gonna win just because it is such a grind and by the time you get there. You're as an underdog you're just exhausted because you're not quilt built for the stanley cup final. Whatever that means. It's just the history of hockey. I just hope that it doesn't end now. If it does for the montreal canadians either way. I just hope this one is a long series And with that will kick it off. Elliott's all set. I'm all warmed up. Welcome to thirty one thousand podcast presented by the gmc sierra eighty four. Can you just talk about What you're feeling right now and is it feelings that you have yourself. "I wanted to start this podcast with a statement on a serious topic. The chicago blackhawks. Some of you have asked whether it's on twitter direct message direct message on instagram. Why i didn't address this topic earlier. I certainly inouye doubt the excellent reporting by tony arnold of wbz radio in chicago. Who broke the story the athletics katie's strang anyone else. It's pretty simple though. I wanted to spend a few extra days doing my own work and my own research just to be sure about a couple of things plus felt using the opening of the podcast and blog. Which will drop monday as a much better place to coherently outlined my thinking instead of on twitter. Things just get mangled sometimes on twitter. There's always what you see and hear out there and what you don't see or hear out there in stories like this one. There's always things that reporters our sources can't or don't print or say and i wonder what those things could be. The accusations are ugly. And what i want to make clear. Is that the people. I spoke to bent over backwards. They took pains to support. Paul vincent the skills coach from two thousand ten who reported the abuses senior management. For that reason. I feel very strongly that however the legal process concludes the blackhawks must come clean and detail what happened. I believe the team and its employees have been told to keep quiet. Not say a word. It's led to a lot of rumors about what punishment could happen but right now. It's all speculation as was several other reporters. The nhl declined comment to me. It's not unusual. It can happen. And i've learned also don't do anything when the league says no on something. What stood out to me was commissioner bill. Daly statement to the athletic. He wrote quote. We have been in contact with the club regarding the matter but there is no ongoing investigation. We do not have any further comment at this time. Dailies a smart lawyer. He includes nothing without reason. No ongoing investigation does that mean no investigation at all there will be an investigation or there already was one. It's open ended. And i wonder at this time. Will that says to me. Don't assume there won't be any statement or consequences sometime in the future. My question is the timeline. Generally when something is in litigation results are slow. If you've ever dealt with the law it doesn't move quickly and defendants aren't going to give away anything. That's going to hurt them in court but and this is a big to me but we are at a time in the nhl. Calendar were hockey. Operations is front and center gm. Stan bowman would be active. During both expansion and entry draft preparations there would be multiple media availabilities. He and the blackhawks will not be able to avoid tough questions. Also commissioner gary bettman will undoubtedly be asked about this during his annual pre stanley cup. Game one conference monday night. No matter the eventual outcome. There must be clarity. We need to know what happened here so we can make sure it never happens again. Nothing else will be accepted and nothing else will be acceptable. Jeff do you have anything. You'd like to add further. What elliott just said. I to agree. The blackhawks need to come clean about what happened. I've covered junior hockey for most of my professional career and stories. Like this as we all know have been all too common. It's ruined careers and more importantly it's destroyed lives. I grew up in toronto Stories of sexual abuse of maple leaf gardens were both disgusting. And also heartbreaking. The published details in this case are horrifying and revolting and any guilty party needs to be dealt with in a serious and significant way. This is at all levels as well. The legal process in this case will play itself out as elliot mentioned and we shouldn't be surprised at any lack of transparency. Along the way that's a legal reality and we may have to be settled with this not arriving at a conclusion that gives anyone satisfaction or any sense of closure either but like to ask you to consider what this means hockey right now. I don't need to remind you. This is a huge story with enormous implications. Here's something i do know. There are ugly truths hidden in the history of this game. And as much as we insist that the blackhawks make good. I would also put forward that other teams and the league along with the players. Association need to do the same and go through a thorough review of how they operate and how they've operated. Some are already doing this. Some stories exist in whispers and will always remain a secret while others are more out in the open an obvious choose not to see them and we all know the conversations are coming. Nhl executive vp. Kim davis joined the nhl telling everyone around her to quote. Get comfortable being uncomfortable for me. That means questioning what we celebrate and cherish in the game of hockey at encourage everyone who hears us to think about the people that say trophies are named. after who were they. What did they stand for. What did they do outside of shuffling along a block of ice. Learn the history of this game how it started why it started and who's been involved along the way and also this is a big one. Consider the statues outside arenas and ask yourself while the player may deserve to be. There does the person there's an old saying. Great men are seldom goodman. That's true in life and sports and certainly true in heart. Okay elliott the stanley cup. Final is all set. It's the defending stanley cup. Champion tampa bay lightning and as. We all predicted the montreal canadiens. Now we dealt with the halves on on the last podcast tampa defeats the islanders in game. Seven one. Nothing other shadowed for andrei vasilevskiy will deal with the The followed now for the islanders. And what's next for lou lamoriello squad but it's tampa it's it all gets underway on monday. Open the podcast. Appear with your thoughts again. I want to say they could very clear that my montreal friends have told me i am not allowed to pick the canadian and they would prefer. I spent the rest of my time dumping on the canadians because it seems to work for them. Look i got to say it's amazing. It's it's an incredible story it really is. I still in some ways can't believe it but again they've earned their way hear people say oh. This is a fluke. It's the canadian division. I don't want to hear any of that garbage. If you win three rounds to make the stanley cup final you have earned your place in the in the final the. I don't care what anybody else says. The canadians have earned their way to be here. And and roger suzie. I'm doing this for you. And all the montreal fans they are no longer islanders light. They are islanders extra strength. They wine new york gave it everything they had came up agonizingly short they are now islanders extra strength and to me kucherov. Health is a big deal. But the thing tamp is they can play you any way you wanna play uptempo up temple the you wanna play tight and tough and grinding dirty. They can play you that way to you. Know it's interesting to me like garry. Galley and i had a big conversation. I pointed out in game seven the first intermission of game seven of islanders tampa that the islanders gave kucherov a more genteel ride than i thought he was gonna. I thought he was going to get some extra shots you know. Whenever he got engaged they give him the extra bombed the elbow. The crosscheck here in there. They weren't doing that. And gary thought he wondered if the islanders were told or were warned by even by their own coaches or anyone else. If you guys go after kucherov they're going to be looking for it. Montreal will not be like that. They will be harder on him. Look i think vassilev skin price. Great goaltending.
