"Were at the one yard line on the previous drive, and all else played out the same. You'd be looking at a 28 21 game right now. And again, I should not take the extra point for granted. Stoner puts it through. And it is 28 14. Austin Jones has both stand for touchdown. SW 19 carries 87 yards And Pete's total skyrocketed off that Yeah. 73 Yard run. He's at 93. All of a sudden you could have two running backs over 100 yards in this game. What's Oh, man. Very strange. That look You're down two scores. One thing organ does not do is take the air out of the game and their seven minutes 39 seconds remaining. Yep, Stanford just one timeout toe work with that's the unfortunate Factoid. But we'll see if Stanford can get a three and out here and make it interesting at USC. Want a game that looked to be lost by too late touchdowns as Onside kick with an onside kick in between. Well. Speaking of interesting What you got from Boulder, 1 45 to play. Colorado 48 42. Okay? And course the Buffs will be at Stanford Stadium. Next this coming Saturday. 12 12 30 kickoff. I believe, but Colorado's getting the ball back. So I don't know about the timeout situation for you..

"But. Candlestick. We had if you're doing good. And you're you know, you're you'd run to the lower deck. But if you lost the game, you'd have the punishment run read up to do every aisle up and down on the upper deck candlestick. And that was that would get you breathing are Stanford Stanford Stadium. We'd go down there and run the stairs. There that was just the last eight rose rebels going straight up, and they were long, and they were hard, and it gets you in shape. But I tried everything. I mean, you know, Nautilus free with free weights, yoga, whatever, we tried everything. And so good, well, babe. Whatever it did a worked. All right, Babe Ruth. So part of it is it helps to be the greatest hitter pitcher you've ever see after the medicine ball session, probably a stake in a cigar starting to read the book by Jane, Levy, the big fella. I just started. I got it at Christmas. Mike you read it the new biography on him. No. I'll check it. I'll give me love Babe Ruth when I was in Philadelphia. My really it was tug McGraw who I just adored, and I learned so much for toga. He loved Babe Ruth. I mean, he had memorabilia he went and saw Bruce wipe any guy that ever played in that era that he came across. He would sign for hours would ask about Babe Ruth. And he had so many incredible stories about the bay back in the day when they went on the train, you know, they didn't have boom boxes. So they brought their musician and Babe Ruth. Brought a piano player wherever he went up. There was a little gathering above the troops in his room after a game which happened too often. There was the tunes. He had. That's awesome. You you love to play your music and the guys like to walk in with their ear buds in now. And and there's all babe. Get around the get around the piano and tickle the ivory good stuff. Raiders fans, twice abandoned, earn notorious honor

"You're listening to the spoken edition of the San Francisco Chronicle. Raiders fans twice abandoned deserve much better by an Killian. Congratulations raiders fans. It's official. Now, you are the most screwed over fans in American sports. Oh, sure. Others have vied for the title in the past Baltimore had a pity party. For retiring. Cleveland felt abandoned shame with Houston old time New Yorker is still like to talk about when two of their baseball teams laughed Seattle. Still would like an NBA team. Thank you very much. But nobody has it as bad as Oakland Raiders fans screwed over not by one but two generations of the same family, though, that's relatively old news. Mark Davis announced he was going to Las Vegas in March twenty seventeen this week has served only to emphasize the pathetic situation faced by some of the greatest fans in sports history. It looks like Christmas Eve will be the final home game of the Oakland Raiders. The last hurrah for the Oakland fans who. Who have been treated like dirt abandoned twice loyalty? Taken for granted served a terrible product from most of the past two decades duped into believing. There could be a winning farewell tour in Oakland until Jon Gruden arrived and tore down the team. And now, it looks like there might not even be another season to say goodbye, you can blame the city of Oakland for filing the lawsuit against the team this week, and forcing the raiders hand or you can blame Davis and his minions for pulling a tentative agreement to play in Oakland in twenty nineteen off the table in the wake of the lawsuit or you can blame the NFL which has been using Oakland as a pawn for years. What you can't do is blame the fans they've taken it and taken it and taken it. And now they're losing their team. Again. Many of these fans already have lived through this on game days. The Coliseum is full of twice jilted fans. Many of whom have passed on their abandonment issues to a second generation they. Had their hearts ripped out in nineteen eighty two when the team moved to Los Angeles when the team came back in nineteen ninety-five many of those fans despite having sworn off the silver and black came back for their loyalty. They've received just four winning seasons four playoff wins. And a prolonged middle finger if the raiders had been truly interested in staying in the bay area and this goes back to the late Al Davis. They should've negotiated with the forty Niners to build one super stadium to house both teams. That's the only logical proven solution for two NFL teams in the same arket. But Al Davis was opposed and his son inherited that position, which is ridiculous. You think the giants and the jets like each other? No, but they both belong in a New York market just like the forty Niners and the raiders both belong in the bay area. Where will the raiders play next year? Who knows the university of Nevada in Reno is tossed around as a real possibility. That's where the raiders. Is reportedly planned to take their training camp. Once they are the Las Vegas raiders. The raiders could go to UNLV for a year. But that would dilute their glittery arrival in the Vegas market in twenty twenty. Could they go to San Diego for year? Bizarre. San Antonio one of their previous flirtation cities. Also, weird Levi's that would only serve to underscore. How stupid it is that the two teams didn't find a compromise stadium years ago? Cal now Stanford unlikely though the amount of remaining fans might be small enough next year to easily fit into fifty thousand seat Stanford Stadium. Of course, Oakland remains a possibility probably the most likely solution. And how pleasant that would be a year of nasty acrimonious partnership in a building full of dead mice overflowing sewage. And faulty x Ray machines Pittsburgh quarterback. Ben Rothlisberger said the ancient x Ray machines in Oakland didn't work well enough Sunday, which is why his return to the game. Was delayed after a rib injury wherever the raiders play. Their fan base is sure to shrink the enthusiasm was sucked out of this season before it even began because of the trade of Khalil Mack to Chicago the investment in season tickets is too much for so little in return on Sunday. Despite the influx of Pittsburgh fans. The parking lot wasn't quite as crowded for tailgating as it's been in the past. But it was still a great scene generations of fans who've made the drive for years, not only from all over the East Bay. But also, the central valley and farther to play music and grill and hang out and talk raiders. This is our real game one man who's been coming for years said as he poured bourbon for his friends. This is what I'll miss for the most screwed over fans in sports. They were having a pretty good time.

Big Game memories: 25 years later, Cals Lindsey Chapman recalls 4-TD day

"You're listening to the spoken edition of the San Francisco Chronicle. Big-game memories. Twenty five years later. Cows Lindsay Chapman recalls four touchdown day by Steve kroner from sports to running back. Share the Cal record for touchdowns and big game with four Chuck Muncie. Did I and the bears forty eight to fifteen route at Stanford Stadium in nineteen seventy five the following year New Orleans selected Muncie with the third overall pick in the NFL draft he wound up spending nine seasons in the NFL. The man who tied his big game. Mark Lindsay Chapman didn't play a down in the NFL. But on a nineteen Ninety-three Saturday afternoon at Stanford Chapman put his name next two. As in the Cal record book Chapman carried twenty eight times for one hundred forty one yards and scored a TD in each quarter as the bears waltz to a forty six to seventeen victory. Cow had gone six seasons. Five losses and the final tie in the nineteen nineteen and nineteen eighty eight with. Thout holding the axe. That wasn't the only thing fueling Chapman against the cardinal. When asked this week about that victory a quarter century ago Chapman. I referenced the guardsman's luncheon, which took place at San Francisco's firm aunt hotel, the Wednesday before the game, the annual charity event brought together the head coach and a few players from each school MC, Bob Sarlat. A Cal alum typically took good natured digs at both teams. Chapman was one of the players representing Cal. And he admits heat didn't realize the luncheon was something of a roast still he thought Sarlat and Stanford head coach Bill wash went too far in maligning the bears one wash line. He said he didn't understand all the hoopla about the acts and that Cal can always go out and buy one, I left there pretty heated. I left that luncheon very very upset. It kind of set the tone Chapman said two years earlier Chapman said he and his teammates felt the same type of disrespect before they met. Clemson in the Citrus Bowl. He said the Tigers didn't feel that we were good enough opponent. Cal was good enough to beat Clemson thirty seven to thirteen I felt that same irritation. When I went at lunch and Chapman said and they were talking about us like that. And like, we weren't even in the room. So that was the fuel that fired at all the night before the big game. The bears were out there Palo Alto hotel. Chapman remembers go into a players only meeting and telling some of the bears offensive linemen that they didn't need to block their men. The next day. They simply had to get in front of them Chapman recalled saying because all you guys in here. I'm gonna put you on my back, and I'm going to carry us to the promised land. I promise you that promise kept Chapman scored his first touchdown on seventeen yard pass from quarterback. Dave barr. Chapman's final three TD's came on runs. After scoring the first touchdown second. Touchdown third. Touchdown. And even the fourth Chapman said, I just had a whole lot of pent-up anger inside of me. Thanks to Bill wash. I really really really wanted to make sure that we brought the axe back. Cal got the axe and Chapman got a different type of. Veneer that he's kept for twenty five years chunks of the Stanford Stadium field that he put in a plastic bag. He had grabbed those chunks in the bears postgame celebration the locker room was just effervescent Chapman recalls. Everybody was just hugging. All over each other. Dear Slater Chapman, got to meet Muncie. Their connection went beyond the cow, backfield Chapman grew up in Louisiana and was a fan of the saints. It was special to me to actually get a chance to meet him being a part of a cow family Chapman said Muncie died at the age of sixty in twenty thirteen Chapman lives in Oakland and works as the northern California regional safety manager for helix electric. He also coached running backs at Chevy college for the past four seasons. The victory over Stanford in ninety three gave Cal seven two four record the bears finished nine two four as they won forty two to eighteen at Hawaii the Saturday after the big game. And then humbled Iowa thirty seven to three in the inaugural. Alamo bowl Chapman. Ran for one thousand. Thirty seven yards that season. And by the way, he also scored four TD's in that victory in Honolulu.

"Is straight through and Jordan care with the clock showing zeros hits a forty yard field goal to equalise career-high. It's halftime. And the beavers end the first half on a strong note going the last ten points thirty four seventeen let's set it down to Ron Callan Jonathan you gotta like the way that half ended. With a long drive got the turn over them the field. Yeah. That's a decent stuff stuff. The first half. Not very good outside of that. We got to work on hitting contested falls playing the ball better. I've seen negative plays offense show up again. Halftime at Stanford stadium's Jonathan Smith anxious to get into the locker room at halftime jogging off the field, Allah, Mike, Lee cheese, usually stop down. But I think there's a message to deliver and GM the way the half ended with the beavers going the last ten points getting the turnover and getting points out of it thirty-four seventeen. I think that message is guys you can win this football game. The beavers get the ball first in the second half. As Stanford won the toss and chose to receive Oregon state gets the ball. I I think that things are going to have to be discussed the running game. We gotta get the running game. And then we'll work off of that and get back into balance. But they just got to be running running priority in terms of moving forward in the second half. And then defensively how do we address number eighty four and jump all situations. I think you're gonna see Oregon state try to redirect them at the line of scraped engine. Not just let him run find his spot turn and post up halftime on the farm Stanford. Thirty. Eighty the beavers.

"Sports radio network. Back live from Stanford Stadium. Scott Reese, Todd who sec John Platts and what an afternoon for college football. Todd. This has to take you back, right? Five thirty kickoff to national powers. Perfect weather going to be a good crowd here. Even without the the students totally back in school yet. It's going to be an event here this afternoon. Well, there's no doubt about it. Looking at Stanford Thome, schedule six games. This is the one everybody circled a ton of tailgates out there. A lot of excitement all week. Philly a lot of people flying up from LA and a lot of USC fans here in the bay area making this trip as well. And you said it I mean, this is a perfect day. A perfect view from up here in two teams at USC has some youth on the offensive side. A lot of experience on the defensive side. They want to get back to where you know, they they they're on the right trajectory for them in the last couple of seasons. I think Stanford has some revenge on its mind. Stanford doesn't often lose the same team twice in a row and a team that they really have dominated over the last decade against USC. We haven't said that in the history of this program. Stanford has really owned USC go back over the last ten years. They need to get off to a good start. Get some rhythm offensively. I think that's going to be a key getting some positive yards on first down setup k j Castillo to take some shots. We didn't see him move at academic ago. And I'm not sure if they're trying to protect them a little bit because the backup at that position is so inexperienced or maybe they're saving things. That's my hope you look back and watch that opener against San Diego State Stanford was so plain in what they did against the Aztecs. Maybe they didn't want to show USC a lot. Let's open it up. And I'm curious to see what their strategy is going to be are they going to throw to set up the run? I would expect him to come out firing the ball because USC going to play up and again, focus on number twenty. I think we're gonna see that all season long lot of teams go vanilla as they say in week one. And you can't afford to do that here in week two against an opponent of this calendar. And that goes both ways that goes for SE as well. And I give you going back a year ago similar situation. Openers Stanford goes down to LA and plays USC had clearly spent their entire off season game planning for Stanford. They they came out with a perfect offensive series to start really I four or five series. Sam darnold starts off four. Teams and fourteen. They run the ball effectively. Stanford had no answers on the defensive side. I'm curious to see is has SEA again focused on the cardinal for the week two matchup. And and what is Lance Anderson to a very experienced and solid defensive coordinator for for Stanford. Does he have something different to try to disrupt USC, but because they got into we talked about rhythm. They are in about as good of a rhythm offensively as I've ever seen in eleven years up here in the booth. Okay. You gotta stop bringing up that fourteen for fourteen almost vanquished that from my memory, and then you brought it up here. So let's let's just put that guy saved Arnold Arnold is in New York and JT Daniels is here, and we'll see what he brings as a true freshman Stanford needs to put you said at the same. Donald was good and experienced a confident JT Daniels hasn't seen a test like this. We'll see if Stanford can put some pressure on him. Don't let them sit in the pocket move him. But we saw USC get him outside the pocket on third down. Especially to try to give him some lines of sight try to make things easy for him. Stanford needs to make it hard for him. Today in can't let him sit back can pick the defense but said it downstairs now check in with John Platts, John. What are you thinking as we head into the ninety eighth matchup between Stanford in USA? I.

"Fans just have a hard time with it there's talk we gotta get new coaches in here john young just beyond the winningest coach in sanford football history pop pass poplin are weak could go uh with a win over cow uh and so let's not get ahead of ourselves david shaw has still i i'm very proud of the program um that he has put together he recruits highcalibre people hires highcalibre people i think he's he's just a good here's a shift the right direction it's amazes me here were probably looking at another doubledigit when season chance to play in the pact will championship game against the ufc teenidol stand for fans one another crack at badly surat so it's it's almost got you know i guess the difference if he's raised expectations safer sees now that we can be one of the best in the country just haven't been able to crack through any part of it is the pac 12 and a part of it is a petrol schedule where he played nine conference games it's not easy it's not easy to go undefeated conference or even one case there's cares seven or eight really get teams in and unfortunately if you will get around the country safe wait a lot of appeal on conference game schedule is a little bit anita so again i'm not complaining another gray season you on the farm and hopefully they can finish it off right finally you know you've been a part of this rivalry uh is it an underrated one notredame stanford well there's been some finishes another my senior years last game we played out here in stanford stadium drug linked to the fuel kicked a field goal with no time left to win that's where my my best memories and there've been some really good match up zero glass you call it twenty years back when i was playing uh and and a lot of nfl players i think what makes special i mentioned earlier both of these teams recruit nationally they recruit highcalibre students um and so i i think there's a lot crossover with players knowing each other i think.

"Middle of the season they instituted that they didn't call it a rule change so they can do this but apparently a rule near enforcing where uh discretionary call by the officials where you're not allowed to do that i don't know what the penalty is or how they rectify it but apparently that's not an option at strategy talk with scattering it should make that a weekly say if we could just a race the last hundred 27 ask we'd all be better off uh i think the uh uh stanford is to be better on first down they have been a a below average is one way to put it on first damn last couple of weeks it into many second long situations where the defense has the advantage early in this game stamford has to beginning a on thursday how about better on the first drive nate shelman dr touchdown all season but an how many three notes it seems like the majority of the times there for comes out it goes three now all right game on kick is deep and headed for the corner of the end zone cameras scarlett will take him li and stanford will come out of the twentyfive and this is washing the defense uh against oregon the we go that they come down downhill they want to get into the backfield they want to dogged the offense and that's what washington state it so stanford has to come up with counter that ah and we'll see how they start we'll see if they take some chopped down the feel they they will put their corners on an island with the opposition's wide receivers and that's where stanford can do well at were staporn is her team's we sought a couple of weeks ago against oregon earlier in the game where they took some shots and more effective 55 degrees a kickoff and not much wind to speak of here on a nice night for football at stanford stadium perfect it is a perfect night her way to and our sega whiteside to the left of the formation for the cardinal castillo under center love the tale back fake the hand of kj over the middle it's caught by our sega weizman meanwhile tell you take it back wanna get in the backfield fake the.

"Seven seven deserve physical big fast they play hard they put together they rallied at football um we they don't give up big plays they don't get give a big plays down the field don't give big up big plays in the running game um they don't give up touchdowns that make you feel goals if you get a chance to get down the red zone on this is the best good a group is possible at is coaches panel of very flattering assessment of the washington huskies and nail host washington in palo alto as we mentioned there last year the cardinal came at aussie stadium on a friday night similar there there was a lebed noticeable air in a a fever in the air about that game last year guys it was just a game where everybody navy white house seventhranked stanford and it was no contest uh look at that that uh gazette football i've been played quite a while that was a complete gain in washington was real explosive that night fortyfour to six the file on that one is a huskies at eight sacks hoping for a similar result but as we mentioned earlier two thousand seven the last time the huskies have one at stanford stadium we have a lodged a lot more to come in our next hours were joining the network and did join bob rondo and damon hill word from stanford stadium to get their assessment of tonight's contests will chekka and see what the weather is like four tonight's game whether it's a dry track and of course a stanford at home get the huskies both teams coming off just this short work week as far as rest as good sir will join bob damon in to get ready for husky game day coming up the next hour brought to you by kors light right here are the washington img sports network whoa.

"And ivan always talks about his alma mater stanford an either one they're winning and go rose bowls in competing for championships they have a hard time drawn fans and the reason is because if you ever been on campus i mean no offence to the football game but know they have like a beach and like they have like a whole beach volleyball area and they have like trees now if you've ever been on that campers this like there's a lot of places to just get lost and sit there or hang out in the coffee shop of listen to people throwdown big richer capital deals as sophomores i mean it it's it's a it's a fascinating replace so i understand very while they won't water over the football stadium as for the best for a bad team i went to a lot of south carolina football game in the 80s and in the nineties when they were terrible people even this post steve spurrier raw where they been bad and it is standing room only in it's always been that way and it's always williams brice always felt like this big game atmosphere even win like spark you woods was there and there were rolling into games like you know had warned sec game and only team they beaten was you know a directional school you never heard of so south carolina has always my tara life and that's that's a personal things up into some of the games down there they blew me away at how they're willing to support that team even when honestly they were awful it with the exception of a couple of seasons all the way up until lou holtz astute spurrier turner room yeah you'd talk about when ivan said about his alma mater he's gone so far to say that a lot of students at stanford couldn't even tell you were stanford stadium is so that that i'll tell you all the time it to you go out there and see it.

"Okay able tragedy the there's a lot of history at the la coliseum it is a cool place the game i haven't been there for a game for a number of years but i did enjoy a notredame us the game many years ago however there is a another stadium at fifteen miles away at the one said it'll probably take you like three hours to get there uh it's called the rose bowl it might have heard of it and that would get my vote and maybe i'm in the minority and you know it's an obscure stadium and and fairly lowprofile and on that yeah fairly new there's not a whole lot history there but now i i am a rose bowl snob and so i i would respectfully disagree and and go with the rose bowl and just a given the fact that i'm in the bay area i would also point out that the two stadiums here memorial stadium a cows for setting is one of the more beautiful stadiums all allah college football at stanford stadium it you know the the the rehab downsized wisely stanford stadium is a is a pretty neat venue as well but for me it's the rose bowl and then there's a pretty sizeable gap with all other college football venues in the golden state no shortage of cool places no two states to say the least i know that you didn't want to insult the coliseum there you may have slightly but there's a lot of history there that you can't deny yes next one is for you ivan speaking of history from ben tannenbaum at mad dog 74 ninety three in ben would like to know what school and position combo has the best alltime legacy for example penn state linebackers wisconsin offensive line clemson wide receiver somebody else.
