"The breaks in between the guitar riffs are just the right amount of time not too long not too short I wouldn't know how to do that. that does not surprise me I would go to one of the breaks I just got to split is just wait awhile just wait awhile who is this jazz Justin Timberlake like I love you. I gotta give a. I was never a fan of his and he hosted Saturday Night Live one of the best host severance have her yeah it's really talented. when you first saw him you didn't think he would be such a driving force for so many years sure that he has but he's a really good actor I know musician. I live player from Dr Baker. candlestick maker I think he's made some candle sticks to I have to ask you a question yesterday they showed these these two statues in front of Soldier Field one of the great Walter Payton some would say and I would be on their side the greatest NFL player of all time yep in George Papa bear Hellas and there's this giant statues of them and they're each doing something representative of themselves Walter Payton has a football on one hand he's kinda looking off as if to say I wonder which way I'll run so the guys can try to tackle me but they will be able to tackle me he's got that look in his eyes you know George Halas is he's doing what I think most people know him best for his coaching he's got his finger up he's like pointing at some guy like cover that guy cover that guy my question to you is when they put up a statue of you went in they will at some point put a statue of you what will your staff to be doing. smoking and drinking. twenty two a liquor store in a mini Mart yeah. I'm not swearing but getting ready to swear. not quite I swear by swearing it has gone there Billy it has gone down you know you are good for me you make me a better man well bill is good for everybody thank you Steve because the fact that you said I swore more than anyone you ever knew that yes that made me want to go back a little bit yes and you have to add to your credit you have your swearing has been curtailed by my estimates forty one percent over this time last year that's pretty good that is pretty good does that keep when the lead bill I still believe. you know who's in second place lumberjacks followed by Viking other sailors on a loser fourth carnival workers fifth so you all yeah really yeah that's pretty you're in good company. the company Steve when they put up the statue of use the what will your statue be delay that's really unfair question tough one is that you can't think about it you have to just answer you had time when he asked me. I don't I did know you're gonna ask me I have no idea really I don't know what they would be doing well under that must be though although why did it take so long statues I believe are always done posthumously aren't they. no no no Stan Mikita is love. Jordan yeah I guess you're right I think so I think these are new fairly new. really well yeah I mean there new as in the Michael Jordan one was with the United center right so that was sort of the the house that that Jordan build but the hawks statue didn't come for several years after that right but the ones that were doing the so you're saying sporting status I dentures that honor I think they're in fashion now was state statues at stadium. playing statue maker when you were a kid somebody would swing you around and then however you landed you had to stay an estimation I don't remember the. be on that I do that with a nap now. was that you make on the net yeah it's fun bill what would your step to I don't know. and what we know he asked us because he has an answer I don't think I'll ever get it you guys are definitely gonna get statues at some point I don't think I'm gonna write I don't even question that I I right okay well just know the quote the only question your schedule when his where it will be it has to be somewhere prominent in which alley. all right is enough. correct. at my expense I guess. I would say diabetes but Steve would even darker I didn't mean it that dark and hit me in the worst way that was not my intent. it is the one under that would be it's pretty great look into and giant I didn't believe how big it was a twelve feet tall each I thought about I don't know the dimensions I just know seeing chair it and Britney there it they it was huge yeah yep they are really cool. then it also when you think about it to look at a statue of one of your parents because you say to yourself well of course I knew them and love them but now for for generations people can come upon the statues and understand the significance that that person have though what a high honor that would be yeah but listening to John Williams show yesterday and just all the highlights of everybody dealing with Walter Payton even if they didn't meet him physically there were just these great moments he had such an impact on everyone would you put him in the category of people that even if you never knew or Matt you feel like you did gather certain people that you just because they're part of your lives for so long either through television or the radio or movies or just polit whatever music certainly you just go I never met the guy but I feel like I know him I never met Walter Payton but in in a weird kind of way he was part of the the the sound that was football I was growing up here right. what a great honor that it is a great honor I didn't know that your tell us was supposed to be on the east wind yeah that's how the story goes that he was supposed to be and was running late or something right and didn't get on the phone I don't know the whole story but Hey wow yeah that's included change history. very cool it's for I'm proud to be a Chicagoan and I hate the Packer yeah. Steve and I were talking before you came in what if the bears lose tomorrow night because tomorrow night is the start of the season there's there's there's extra added pressure totally it's your it's your your biggest rival the Green Bay Packers so what if they lose I mean they maintain that they usually they're the favorite though correct I believe they are the favorite yeah which is nice because we went a long time with that was not the story. your writers were all are you back out almost often underdogs I'm gonna wait and see how things go tomorrow. ical I need to see what happens tomorrow so are you guys that was saying this in the newsroom like opening day for baseball for me is Hugh Jess did you know it because I think that has to do with the weather the CCS opening day for the NFL this doesn't quite have the same feel for even this year Steve with all the extra hoopla I it's about the it's about the time of year I think you know it's because you dread the fact that the the start of the football season on the other now it's just not as exciting yeah it's not something coming forward yeah I just got stuff outside to do. you know you're not going to watch the game yeah I'm sure okay game but I'm not like you to opening day baby you know yeah I'm pretty excited about it and I have friends who have season tickets and Meg if you go to the game obviously it's more sure but to watch the first bears football game on your television is pretty exciting yeah. yeah is it weird though that it's on a Thursday would you would you have preferred the First Lady on a Sunday nor on normal football viewing time yeah I like Sunday I like a sound of a football game it's easy to map to. well the day at singer and I think it is bowling no the best of us napping sport a break and then more show stick Mister Graham's bill one in the region. Robert tells us that the sequel is it.

"Enough to have seen Bobby hull and STAN mikita play your lucky, but there are those of us lucky enough to have witnessed their Marvel's Dennis of arts. And now number eighty eight. Chance for thirty. Patrick. He's got thirty dollars this year any doubles, the lack hawks lead nice to to get it before the break. And I have to think about it. But then you come here. And and you do it back at home with a lot of people here and a lot of people knowing that that's the nine hundred. That's that's pretty exciting. It makes it even better Patrick Kane following Pat, Foley's, call and NBC Kane is fifth and the hawks all time list just twenty points behind Steve Larmer, STAN mikita is on top with fourteen hundred sixty seven but at age thirty in the way, he's going. "They did a tremendous job special moments for the family and everybody watching it Blackhawk fans and players coaches appreciate it as well. And we did have an amazing start to the game. Was we had the puck and we made plays, and we hit everything going our way. Then. But the way we started that game Masui hadn't seen anything like that. And their team game over the last year. And we had stretches over the first two games. But that was an excellent beginning in. We'll give him some credit for. Reflection on stand. Blackhawks did have an extremely strong start to this game. The first ten or twelve minutes is was tilted down on the Toronto end. But with all that firepower that the Maple Leafs had and with some issues at the Blackhawks are still trying to work through defensively and with the goaltending a little bit and communication and whatnot. It was not to be as it soon turned into a track meet now here from Dominic Kahuna. And by the way, let me also add that ceremony. If you guys saw or heard it the Blackhawks. Did did it a classic job? Once again, putting something like that together as they do with their one more shift nights. And when anyone is is due the credit that that hall of Famer, and that great person STAN mikita deserves the Blackhawks certainly do a wonderful job. Now back to the locker room. Let's now here from the rookie Dominik Cahoon who had himself to assist the first two points of his NHL career. What's that? Over technical. I mean. The face off his very important into overtime to take out the early, and he just took a shot,.

"So when I was recalled recall for three weeks enough that I got to make, you know about ten thousand dollars, which was I was unbelievable. Bob, my momma TV and some and some diamond earrings. I was so excited. I thought it was the best thing because I was making twenty two thousand five hundred miners. But after one of the practices I'm exhausted first of all the ISIS brutal that the old Chicago Stadium and about to come off the ice. Because coaches are done, everybody's done. I'm picking up the pox and up comes the stairs. There's twenty four steps behind both nets at the old Chicago Stadium. And I hear this. And I'm thinking, oh, man, not more like I'm done. STAN mikita came up in a sweat suit and gloves, and he had his stick on any came up. And he was out of like he was not like the alumni of today. STAN wasn't around all the time. So the great STAN mikita was forty five years old at the time, and I was I just turned twenty one and he comes up and I'm and I take, I take off my glove and I shake his hand like STAN Makita. So he says, so, hey, would you mind if I shoot some pucks on? Well, now I'm now so where where I'll go around in circles where I really thought that I'd never make it STAN Makita stood there for probably twenty minutes and picked me apart. I couldn't stop. He's a forty five year. Old guy hadn't played for, I think it was four years and just wanted to shoot pucks and I couldn't stop him. I'm thinking, holy smokes. Like, how am I supposed to play in this league? And I know he's a great player, but come on, you know? And I was so frustrated. I broke my stick. Over the crossbar. I was so mad and there's, there's my temper. I had a little bit of a temper and while he was out there, yeah, we finished the session. I, that was it. I mean, I think he felt bad because I mean he he was just having fun and he dropped his shoulder and looked like he was going right and go left, go like that he'd go, hi glove. He'd go there and go through my legs. I'm like, this is unbelievable. Like what he's one of the greatest players play. It'd be like Michael Jordan, probably picking up a basketball and and dancing anybody, but but it wasn't for me. It was different. It was a didn't feel very confident after that. So what did you do that? That the miners right after I got sent right, right back down and and they told me actually, they said you've got a lot of work to do. I'm like, you're, you're your turn right. I knew it like usually when somebody said that to me, I throw that middle finger. I'll be right back here. But this time I was like, I sure do. And I went down to the minors and I, I worked in a different fashion than I did before natural. I had to work. I'm curious what a goal when you say you worked at? There's no doubt my mind you worked at does a goalie do well to work at figured out. I wasn't as square to the shooter's. I thought I was. I was a bit of a cheater, so you get you get. That's why when I can analyze, let's say, Jake, as an example there, there's, you know, there's a move here there where every goalie goes through it, where you get flat on the line instead of square. So you know, let's say that you favor a left hand shot going down your right side and you can somehow you get your whole body position, get nice and square so that that that player, if you don't even move, he's not going to score with you. Show the noth- patients to not move before that puck is office stick. He probably won't score anyway. So you can stand there if you're right, but there's sometimes we're Jake on the on. His left side gets a little flat with his right skate, and I was that way and that's why I can recognize it when he has a little bit of an issue with it, and. And so, and when that happens and STAN mikita shooting or Al seek or Dennis. Varta Bernie footwork. Oh, or or they're going to score and it's not even close like, and you think you've got them and it's not even close. And so that's what I had to work on..

You just drive down yeah I had this feeling that I was going. To, have a go. Team hockberg and I had to be here for. Wow that was impressive David Hochberg is here from from team hockberg obviously I, know this wasn't. Scheduled for something we were going. To. Discuss with you but I'm curious I. Know what huge Blackhawks fan? Yes Just, a second or two about STAN mikita the huge loss I moved here when I was seven years old and I used to listen on a transistor radio to the Blackhawks game, underneath my covers trying to go to bed my parents they go to bed I was huge huge hockey fan all. My, life and you. Know I grew up with STAN mikita Bobby Hall. Magnusson all those guys and I would run home in high school when when, when they were. On the road with Bannerman and. Seat And and savvy at just Roenick all those guys and and and the ambassador was STAN Makita right yeah Was the guy that was always there first embassador hall, was hall and Stanford candidate brought it back I heard John talking about how he he called the Paul and then he. Called? STAN Yeah He. Was he was one of the my childhood idols growing. Up you, know one of my favorite Blackhawks think he was kind of the prototype we now we all are very familiar with Jonathan, tapes but I think STAN mikita was the prototype for that kind of, guy absolute so great on the, ice but also so great off the such, a he was a gentleman off the. Ice he played hard every single. Night, yeah he was one of the first guys that wore the. Helmet he didn't. Care. Right I, mean he was out there. Skating you knew where skit STAN mikita was because he was one of the few guys wear the. Helmet It was, cool just, watching him, skate around and just the ease and the grace and the passing in the shooting and how he played the game he, was, he was at all Angie back checked, he was fast he was a great pass who's a great shooter phenomenal and. I don't, think David. You told. Me if I'm wrong Bobby hull got the bulk of. The attention, and I don't think it bothered him I think he was fine with that I didn't know on Makita personally so I, can't I can't speak for that but all I could say that he, was a great teammate you don't, hear one person that has has come on, the radio speak one not one not. One that I was listening earlier. To, Steve and Justin was on talking to a guy who ran. Into STAN say. Hey. Can you, sign this for my daughter. Bring them bring her over and they sat in his living room for another I mean come on You don't have that type, of, access today a walking around the neighborhood, hey Mr. Kennedy might sign this I watch bring over your daughter and I'll. Sign it, in person And they sit. In the living room. For a. Couple of hours amazing you don't, have, that I was at the game last year, I was fortunate enough when they did when his grandkids I almost cried right it was it was touching because you knew listen we all. Heard that. He wasn't, doing well, and he was deteriorating it just to see his family out on the ice one last, one last. Shift and they brought his grandkids out it was, it was you know as as a lifelong Blackhawks fans a seven year old. Boy growing up in the area it was it was. Great and the Blackhawks do, it right and whatever they're. Gonna do tribute to pay tribute to STAN and. His family I'm sure it'll be outstanding you at a great idea my. Idea, was and it's I think. It's fairly obvious you put his number on all the players jerseys Yeah that's gonna be something but just the video what they do come on all those guys Jay Blunk and and and everybody in management the. Blackhawks probably been working on this little bit probably have something all set number I'm. Sure. They're putting the finishing. Touches on the how do you pick. The highlights when there are so many hundreds of thousands. Of highlights without and. I'm that's. What I'm looking forward to to, to, see what the final tribute to what the, Blackhawks do I'm sure it'll be opening night in my my shirt it'll be sometimes the beginning of the season but it'll be it'll be. Special and. I'm definitely, going to, go to that game it's going to be kind of cold because they definitely honor the, past star. Absolutely I'm looking forward to the Blackhawks fan is, also vice president of mortgage lending at Perl mortgage p. e. r. l. David. Hochberg I have a dirty four letter word that you. "Carp, cool carpool karaoke What is drama, well there's a couple of things James corden, on the late late show on CBS has. Been, trying to do one of these carpool karaoke with Kanye west for, quite a while I think so he can say Kanye carpool karaoke which is a tough to say one time. But Kanye has cancelled on him three. Times now according. To corden and the cost of the most recent cancellation forty five thousand dollars. Because, they got outfit. The cars and the people the employee's. Exactly. For that The other drama with that is that they were about to do they did do a carpool karaoke with Ariana GRANDE and. They finished and Ariana Anna Grandi put on Instagram, shortly after that picture of her hand bandaged, up call like a bloody old gauzed up. Hand she didn't say exactly what happened but she said you'll see when, the carpool karaoke goes on the air with her something happened where she injured her hand and Hi high notes she said that it was just something. So stupid and James corden says. It was the, most fun carpool karaoke that they've ever done I do like that segment and if our economy just say no Rolled their fingers up in the window I've seen our kids. Do that so that's? What. That really in actuality never existed but we've heard over the years several people who came to. Chicago and we're such fans of the. Movie that they said hey I'm? In Chicago I gotta. "Do here on this day where Chicago mourns the loss of. One of the greatest athletes of all times one of, the most legendary names in Chicago sports STAN mikita passed away yesterday. At the age of seventy eight he died after suffering from a progressive, form of dementia one. That robbed him, of his memories and his. Quality of life the Blackhawks icon played twenty two seasons with the team from nineteen fifty nine hundred nineteen eighty in that time he. Amassed records for points he's still the all time leader for the hawks for games played any won a Stanley Cup in nineteen sixty one after he retired. He was inducted to the NHL hall of, fame in one thousand nine hundred three and later was named to the top one hundred players of all time Makita was known as a tremendous hockey. Player but also as an innovator, for, the game and, someone who cared, deeply for his Chicago community Here on the communities. Chicago community cared for him as well as he's already had more to live with a statue outside the United Center next to his teammate Bobby Hall and. Of course Michael Jordan and he was also, immortalized in the movie Wayne's world has the proprietor Makita Steiner it's great to think about that Of course getting. A chance to not only be Be immortalized in such a great. Comedy but to play himself and to do. Comedy, that was. The fun part about Dan's doughnuts yeah I was listening. They. Were talking about and Mike Myers? Who, needed to have STAN Makita in that movie wasn't a Blackhawks fan. No he's always Canadian right so what does it Toronto guy yeah and so but he whenever stay. Makita would come in? Play there he was so impressed by how this guy played his team that that's how he became Makita fan so isn't that. Amazing his quote was I put in twenty two years in the National Hockey League, and people remember me from this movie, a Donut I was trying to think of. Another career where things change so much over. Time Twenty two years in. One sport and like? A kindergarten teacher when you even if you've taught for twenty two years how different teaching is the first year twenty second year. Like hockey changed so much and he was part of changing it but the helmet Things like that maybe he, did he invented the curve hockey stick which. Is a, great story and like you said the helmets he brought them into, the modern era He was also this is my favorite part about STAN Makita he was. He was able to change to to what you were just saying he, was able to change his game from dirty. Player, because he started his career where he was he was. Kind of EMMY. Still Steve's the leading the league, in points but he was. The enforcers compelling peddling, minute yeah, and he had the scary look right And he went from he was able to to transition his career from. Dirty player to to a gentleman and was evidenced by winning the lady, the lady big trophy for gentlemanly play which. Is. The greatest trophy in all of sports No you're good when, you're able to do that because I don't know any athlete that can shift gears believable okay my daughter said I don't. Why are you always in the penalty, box I'm going to switch things out so good David of course covered? You've, covered the Blackhawks you've covered I wanted to get a little time, to top six six top your reflections of STAN mikita passing as, someone who has been covering sports for for years here in town what is STAN mikita me well I remember going into the Blackhawks. Dressing, room at old Chicago Stadium and STAN was in the last couple of years of his career but he. Was. Still such a, mainstay in. Such a force in the dressing room and? Had so much respect for everyone around it I mean here was the guy who, everyone who is going to be in the hall of fame, and then won a Stanley Cup and it's not like the Blackhawks had a lot, of those guys on those teams in the late seventies and early eighties but the thing that. Always, struck me about. STAN mikita and of course in. The last few years we haven't seen him but prior, to that when he was became an ambassador and when the Blackhawks came to WGN he was here all the time. Because anytime there was any? Sort, of a Blackhawks related event STAN and Bobby hull and Tony Esposito, they would come here but STAN will come here a lot on, zone and he had a certain elegance Mary back me up on this always had a certain elegance about him the way carried himself Yes Suits before they were a thing turtlenecks he he was a mainstay at every charity golf event in, Chicago and a lot of times it would be like a, beat the pro deal where he would be on a whole and he would hit shops for your group when you came through because he was, a he was a pro golfer right after he retired from. Hockey he was the assistant pro at Kemper lakes for a long time because that's when hockey players didn't make enough. Money they had to have another, career so I'll just get it at. Hockey so. Good he signed his first contract had leave for eighty five hundred dollars a year with the. Blackhawks I, mean think about. That but to, me one of his great legacies was the American hearing impaired hockey, association which he founded as a hockey camp for for kids with hearing difficulties in the early, seventies and it exists and has grown and it's still there to this. Day it's. Amazing Makita was not just known in hockey circles statement stories, and condolences came in from all, around the globe yesterday and today Mary. Scott those I mean. It's, it's obvious, that you're, gonna get statements from maybe. The mayor of Chicago and maybe the Blackhawks organism but it goes way beyond that yeah current. Players former players people outside the sport themselves yesterday I heard Mark Jean grecko talk about how. When STAN, before, he even started playing hockey he was a shy kid and, he watched these kids out in the. Street playing street hockey any, thought well, that would be cool if I. Go, out there and. Play but he was too scared to ask then he, ended up being you know one of the greatest players ever also, there's been, pictures Dave Stubbs who writes, financial dot com he got them from Glenn hall. In their, wedding pictures of when he STAN got married and we've got Mike Ditka. Like a, twenty two year old Mike Ditka Glenn hall and Bobby hull we Al put it on her social Cochran, show and WGN radio because it's. Like, and so, Mike Dickey, yesterday was talking about how. He was so fun to go out with like these guys rolling around you know like it's. Just these legends before they were legends doing legendary things that we don't know about you know. It's amazing, to, think about STAN mikita Mike dick it because in that era, the pro athletes in Chicago that's they. Hung together I mean you, had a, Ron Santo and Mike Ditka and STAN, mikita and Bobby And whoever, else Jerry Sloan maybe I don't, know but they those guys would would spend time. Together I, don't think there's there's anything close to that that goes on these days Earlier we talked about going from dirty player two gentlemen STAN mikita told, me in a two, thousand eleven interview that the reason he made the. Switch wasn't rules or even strategic it was because.

Day whatever your case may. Be got you this. Morning it's that even, like, well I can't even imagine who has nothing to. Do I'm trying to cover. Everybody I'm trying to cover everybody like the idea that maybe they're in bed till ten. O'clock they listened to the full four. Hours. Okay if you Till ten o'clock and you get up. At six that's my quietly. There insomniac that really. Likes their bet that, could, be I don't sleep well so on the weekends. But my husband gets angry. When I get up in the morning so I will wake up at around six thirty. In the morning but I have to. Lay. In bed If I. Leave the room before. Nine thirty he gets very upset there's a type of person for everybody. Right that's just trying, to cover all bases day I sorry shouldn't have dealt Dave Dave. Works twenty four hours a day seven days a week so he, can't picture having nothing to do right Well, we've got a great show lined up where of course gonna talk about STAN mikita what a loss for Chicago and I do. I do you talk about the mount Rushmore Chicago sports athletes and hero STAN Makita has to be on obviously he's already. Immortalized with statue in front of the. United Center but STAN mikita will be a big part of our show today as we'll talk about him here, in the six o'clock. Hour John McDonough is gonna join us, from? The Blackhawks a CEO and president later in. The show, in the seven o'clock. Hour so we've got a lot of, we'll we'll do a. Lot with STAN Makita today and and rightfully so To say that he's the. One of the biggest athletes in Chicago history may be an understatement in the way that I don't know I mean if. You did have a mount Rushmore of. Athletes he's definitely have to be all they're not question humans amount Point other news this morning we will talk of course about the Chicago police adding more officers to some of, the, more violent plagued neighborhoods of Chicago. This this mentioned by the superintendent Eddie Johnson Lori Lightfoot wants to be your next mayor Chicago and she's going to join us talk about which plans she would have to stem the tide. Of violence, in the city Chicago and and really answer the, question is there anything any mayor can do at this point That'd, be the question for her coming up in the seven o'clock hour also Representative Mike Quigley will join us congressman from the fifth, district and city Chicago we'll be. In studio talk about everything happening in Russia in Washington One say Russia well in Washington Of something to say about STAN. As. He's the biggest Blackhawks fan yeah and he'll have something say as well and I and, we have to talk about I I'm fascinated with this, story about Saudi Arabia and Canada a story where they can the Canadian government wants Saudis to release some some. Human rights activists that were arrested Saudi has been conflict confrontational to. Say the least about doing so and the United States. Is Sates stayed on the sideline it's, a very interesting story because Canada last time I checked was a member of NATO, in this falls into that category but the US is not, backing up, Canada against a what a longtime complicated relationship with. Saudi Arabia where they are, considered I wouldn't say an enemy. But they're not an ally yet we. Do tons of business with them isn't this usually, where? We sell send Bill Clinton right he does some brokering and then. He, comes. Back with the people. Yeah exactly that's what we need we need a Bill Clinton. Or, maybe Jesse Jackson. Or, somebody. Do that for us. But but really interesting whoever the Canadian counterparts Yeah Yeah so, anyway so we'll talk with Representative Mike Quigley and Steve is going to be in as we bring in a new when I've never done this segment with you. Guys this is the adopted pup, segment? Right Dave on its, lead Dave gets on the. Dog probably my favorite. Thing we do all the. Show we bring the. Dogs Don't think, we've had one in the new studio I'm very excited about this so the dog's name is Jade I did cut into that so Dave and Jade we'll be. Rolling on the floor together the, idea? Is the dog comes, in Dave rolls on the. Floor with the dog. And then we go to. Break and then people Little more than that calculated as and they think I need that dog all. I see I think we're like per one hundred percent. Adoptions shave plan around it. So your actions of getting on. The floor and rolling around. With the dog one, hundred percent adoption rate after I show. The dogs playfulness and I think it shows that the dog has personality and so, should be a good member of your family so We got lots. To do news weather and traffic of course and we got tickets to give away for Blackhawks and. SNL exhibit remote we've. Got coming up on Friday so much to do today in the Steve Cochran show so let's get to it let's find out what's, coming up, in the six thirty news Steve percentage Justin a city, has a plan to curb at least try to curb the gun violence has been going on we'll tell you. "Of course with, our with our Blackhawks broadcast but it's sad to talk to you. During a time like this I know you have very. Fond memories, of Dan Makita you know I've known. Stand for a long time I. Came here. The. Early. Eighties It's been. A good, San he's been a mentor to me. Over my years here in Chicago Very Very, caring very generous. Man with this, time there's so many things that you could talk about outside of his playing, career which was phenomenal. Here here's a guy who basically the the curve. Stick he was one of the first guys to wear a helmet in the National Hockey. League he was a hundred plus penalty minutes guy the next year when Gilady Bing trophy because he had to tell the guys in the NHL because he wasn't a big guy that I'm gonna stand my ground and I'll do whatever it takes to play in. League just a wonderful man and for the Makita, family we all feel sorry for. Them it's been a tough time for them to deal with illness for standard has been going on for several. Years and you, know it finally came to a head here, today and, unfortunately the world lost a good. Man a really good. Math. Absolutely. Troy I remember first, meetings Dan Makita at a golf outing, after of, course after his playing career in these little kids ran up and they said Mr. Bikita Mr. Makita can you sign our, jerseys our sweaters and he, did and then east and then He sat there and talked with. Them he's little kids just talk with them for fifteen twenty minutes and that's kind of a person he was. He always made, time to talk to his fans of any, age he, really was and and that that. One thing that everybody. Remembers. About. STAN mikita that he, was very generous with this time and, you know, you see some of the modern athletes and I'm not being critical of all of them because you know there's a lot, of good guys in the, in all sports today but The older generation of hockey players of. Chechen last week to me seemed to spend more time with with the fans and STAN was one of those guys that he. Was never at, a hurry to get anywhere because if he was talking to somebody he wasn't in a rush to take, to move on and I I think that's very special for you, know Oh per stand to do, that east bet basically is entire life here in. Chicago twenty one years, with the Blackhawks, he was a great person in the community. He he did so much there's a, hockey program was the, hearing impaired he was the head guy for many many years until he just couldn't couldn't do anymore that was a, lot of taxing time for him in the summer but he was more than happy to do it this was a very very generous, man twenty two years nearly with the same franchise try. Talk about, how rare that is especially by today's standards It. Just won't happen anymore, sports just the, way that the sports world is people getting. Traded and moving on and there's a, lot of salary cap She was in all sports. Today that that make trades kind of happened but he'll also stand he was a Black Hawk through and, through he came into, the NHL, a Blackhawk, he left us a, Black Hawk and you know the, legacy that he leaves behind as a hockey player his second to. None the points the games everything. That he did the sacrifice to give himself says the city of Chicago is. Something that I think everybody should be Wary, of and and know, that, you know he. He you know to? Me you look, at, it and? They'll Bobby, Hall, is is is a great Blackhawks but he moved on and stand was the one guy that he was here from start to finish didn't wanna go anywhere. Loved the city Chicago this was his home and really invested himself into the city and the community after his hockey cruelest out Eric rung is with me tonight or this morning I should say Troy. Say good morning Detroit how you, doing there try doing good Eric how're you, you know I I've been reading. All these stories all day long of just the kind of person that, STAN was and you've. Touched on it a lot about his generosity. And I remember I read a story. Today that him and some other Blackhawks at we're talking to some rookies and talking about going out in, in helping out in, the community, and things, like that and he, was quoted as saying that's just, part of being a pro athlete which I think is absolutely amazing You really, don't see that too often anymore It is I, don't again I kind of touch on it that it was kind of in bed into the the generation that STAN grew, up at and Keith nag mission was another guy brought. People out STAN would bring people out to to a hospital and nobody knew. About it there was no fanfare and the younger players and the kids, would go why are we? Doing this and, he says because this is part of. The job this is part of what you need to do as as a, professional athlete give yourself back to, the county and it was just a just a wonderfully generous person with. His time he's a great, family man, you know I feel so sorry for Jill and the entire his wife and then the entire family and all the. Very well and you, know what in some ways when, he was was he what he was on call as an athlete as a, professional athlete He? Had, to put, aside because he was spending time with, the people in the community and spending time being STAN mikita the hockey player and the person that's just the way he, was sacrifice a lot but I think there's that stands. As we and I love talking to the the older generation of players because. I really understand what they're talking about when they they say that this, is as you said there? Are part of, the job part of the resume of. What you need to be as a professional athlete as a ball bottle in, a certain city as a as, a professional hockey player stand did it to the best of his abilities. Right up until the last, moment when, he could do it Troy truly one of the icons of the franchise player that lives on for generations even after. He stopped playing so, another angel in heaven tonight number, twenty one so there you go right it's you know it's day and and Well certainly gonna miss some heavily involved with our alumni association we actually have a golf. Outing which is the STAN mikita alumni Blackhawks goal. Flooding which takes place in a couple of weeks less than a couple of weeks August twentieth show that's gonna be a tough one because there's gonna be a lot of the former players, from the surrounding, area here at the golf outing and certainly were we will take it to heart that STAN won't be with us he'll be there in spirit but it's a tough day for everybody in the hockey world the sports world in the city Chicago they lost two good person and I will leave you on kind, of a little more of a maybe not a humble note but I heard a cute story today I. Think I heard on channel nine they were telling. The story of after, Wayne's? World, when they, had Makita donuts they Hey do you wanna do. You want to do this he said. No no no and then later he. Was gone what the heck was I thinking why did I opened up akitas, donuts I know that was you know Wayne's world stan- Makita, in the United, States was. Great but in Canada, it was it. Was so big it, looks hilarious You know, I think. Could have made a, ton of money Obviously if you. Just look back and said. Maybe I should, have done it it's very what they, said but you know everybody. Remembers that stands in the movie the big donavan the top that was funny and there's we could sit here Andrea and. And talk all night because, it was, such a great guy and there's so. Many stories you know long ago and current of of. Standing and he, had a real good sense of humor too by the way he, was a, very funny man and in his own subtle way a quietly joking type of guy that was a. Pleasure to be around and. And certainly. I'm gonna miss them this was a. Tough day absolutely. Try thank you so much for your time thanks for waiting I know you had a, long, night and it's been a long day for you. Too so, but thank you so much for sharing your memories Yeah. Thanks for having me I. Appreciate it. Very good we'll talk soon that's the. Great Troy Murray. Are on color analyst.
