Ben Shapiro on the Michael Brown Shooting

"I'm old enough to remember when Barack Obama went out there during the Ferguson riding and said, people don't make up things like this. He was talking about the Michael Brown shooting Michael Brown shooting by the way, it was a good shoot. In fact, it turns out that after another review of the Michael Brown shooting by officer Darren Wilson, it turns out five years after the six years after the case, the case has been dismissed again, according to the Daily wire. Amanda Prestigiacomo reporting ST Louis County Prosecuting attorney Wesley Bell announced on Thursday he will not be bringing charges against former Ferguson Police Department officer Darren Wilson were fatally shot Michael Brown, 18 back in 2014. Ring, a Thursday press conference. They'll announced the news by prefacing it as quote one of the most difficult things I've had to do, noting that his heart breaks before the Browns. The question for the office was a simple one could prove beyond a reasonable doubt. And when Darrin Wilson shot Michael Brown, he committed murder or manslaughter under Missouri law, Bell asked after an independent and in depth review of the evidence, we cannot prove that he did. He, by the way, is the county's first blast. Black prosecutor he reopen, reopen the case after taking office. One of the reasons he gained office is because of disapproval for no case against Darren Wilson, the first place and then he looked at the evidence, he said, Sorry. We can't actually make a case at his office conducted a five month review of witness statements, forensic reports and other evidence, the AP noted, adding his investigation does not exonerate Darren Wilson. But it's not the way the criminal justice process works. If you're not convicted, that doesn't mean you're not. Exactly that does not mean that you are exonerated. There is no exonerated standard in criminal law. There's just not prosecuted. So you also get to Claire not exonerated. That's not the way this works. L said. I know this is not the result they were looking for and that the pain will continue forever. Jim tally, Wilson's attorney noted Belle's review had the same conclusion as Bells predecessor. A grand jury and the usdoj was Obama's deal J. By the way, there was no crime. The Obama Justice Department at the time, pointed out that there was no crime but doesn't matter. Democrats have continued to lie about the Michael Brown shooting and use it as the basis for a political campaign to suggest that America and police officers are deeply

"Well. This is all things considered from NPR news. I'm Ari Shapiro and I'm Elsa Chang In less than two weeks, The family of Michael Brown will mark the sixth anniversary of his death. And so Bill Ferguson, Missouri, Brown was shot and killed by Ferguson Police officer Darren Wilson in 2014 Thie killing set off protests against police violence and clashes between demonstrators and cops. Then a grand jury in ST Louis declined to charge Wilson, who is no longer a cop, and in 2015 the U. S. Department of Justice decided they would not bring federal charges that has not stopped Brown's family from calling for prosecutors to indict Wilson and the person they wanted to do just that chose not to yesterday. ST Louis County. Prosecuting attorney Wesley Bell joins us now. Welcome. Thanks for having me So you were elected in 2018 in large part because you promised to reform the prosecuting attorney's office. And a lot of your supporters had hoped that meant you might bring charges against Wilson. Tell us why you didn't after investigating the case for five months. You know, first and foremost way were elected on a broad platform to bring criminal justice reform, expanding diversion programs, um, reducing the jail population. And you know, and with respect to cases in general, approaching them with fairness and equity, um ensuring that people who are you know if we cannot prove a crime beyond reasonable doubt that we shouldn't be charging. We shouldn't be charging people and forcing please, as we seem on examples across the country, and and so but in this case, we knew that this was a significant case. We know that You know that It matters to people, the family but this community and so we wanted to give it the fresh set of eyes. Ah, look at it that it deserved. And so we did a five month investigation with our new conviction and incident review unit a lot ofthe unit. And what did you need to see? That was not there specifically. What we needed to see was whether or not which is the ultimate question of a prosecutor. Whether or not we had enough evidence to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that a crime and better crime was committed. Also in Missouri. We also have the additional burden of disproving a self defense claim. So we had the double burden and that we have that double person in this case, and based on that evidence, and again I wasn't around for six years ago during the investigation, so I'm limited in what I conduce not only by The investigation but limited by the law of what I could do, And so now, at this point, we're looking at the the evident we looked at the evidence with the first set of eyes and on DH, you know, Unfortunately, we just don't have the evidence to ethically bringing charge against Darren Wilson. So what do you tell people in your community who still feel that justice has not been served in this case? No. I mean it's interesting. You say that because people you know, I've heard people say I don't like your decision. And you know, my response is I don't like it either. I understand people had disappointed in and I'm disappointed. We went through this the evidence all of this evidence with a fine tooth comb and If there was evidence to support that we could are there was enough evidence to prove this case beyond a reasonable doubt. Then we would issue it, but but we don't and and I made a I took an oath to follow the law. Sometimes that law is unfair. Unfortunately, there's things that we need to do. In order to correct some of these these these laws, and there's things that we're trying to do changes in our office as a result of this investigation, such as recording grand jury test grain jury sessions in homicide cases providing victim services for families Because the brown family did not receive services from this office, they didn't receive the dignity and respect. That they deserved and so as as unfortunate, unfortunate and tragic as it is, and that we can't bring them to justice that they want. I hope that they can attack least and again. They seem to at least appreciate that. We tried. We We met with him. I looked him in the eye and left him on DH. Let them see what we did. Um, but you know, at the end of the day, this is tragic and and there's a lot of people that are suffering with this. Wesley Bell is the prosecuting attorney for ST Louis County. Thank you very much. Thank you. California Congresswoman Karen Bass was a relative unknown on the national stage until recently, and now she's believed to be among the contenders to be Joe Biden's running mate, a former community organizer and head of the Congressional Black Caucus. She's getting support not just as a VP hopeful but as a leader in the party as NPR's Kelsey Snell reports. There are a lot of hard edge leadership styles in Washington, demanding, cajoling and will bending types. Karen Bass says she approaches things a little differently in the work that I do is anchored in pushing for social and economic justice. I believe in working in a very collaborative collective work style, which means that it's team driven. It's never personality driven. It's a style best, says she developed in Los Angeles in the 19 eighties. At the time she co founded an organization aimed at fighting addiction, crime and poverty in the community. Congresswoman Barbara Lee, a fellow California Democrat, says she remembers meeting bass In the 19 nineties, Lee was on a state assembly and Bass was lobbying for liquor store regulations to keep kids from buying alcohol. She was really a community organizer, but she also knew how to strategically work within the system within the legislative body to get a bill path when a state legislative seat opened up. Says Bass was the on ly person on most list for who should run. She became the first black woman to lead a state assembly was elected to Congress in 2011 and was picked to chair of the Congressional Black Caucus in 2018. But when it comes to being Biden's running mate, some colleagues privately acknowledge that she lacks a national profile and hasn't been tested for this kind of role. But they say her background in activism and social justice make her a logical fit for Biden's list as the country grapples with racial injustice. In the wake of the killing of George Floyd, we're blessed to be led by the CBC chair, Karen Bass. To bring 47 years of leadership advocating for racial justice and an end to police brutality. That's House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on the steps of the Capitol, explaining why she chose Bass to lead Democrats in rewriting the nation's policing standards. A surge of attention in America on social and racial justice has created a unique moment for Democrats. At least four black women in Congress are rumored to be on Biden's list. But Bass says any attempt to frame this as a competition or a cutthroat showdown are unfair and reductive. South Carolina Congressman Jim Clyburn, who's an influential voice in the Democratic Party and was one of the first people to float passes. A vice presidential contender, says women and African Americans are a critical part of the Democratic Coalition party is supposed to guarantee opportunity. And this part of his guaranteed opportunity for women. Bass may be in the vice presidential mix. But unlike some of the others, she hasn't worked closely with Biden. Critics say she also lacks a strong background in foreign policy. It's a shortcoming that led to a dustup with Florida Democrats over a seemingly supportive statement she made about former Cuban dictator Fidel Castro. She walked that back, but critics say it could hurt her appeal in a key battleground state. Bass wouldn't say if she's campaigning for vice president. But leave says best is well equipped to lead the party. Even if it's not from the White House. She understands the moment that we're in and that we must seize the time on behalf of Not only our communities, communities of color, but for the entire country. Democrats say one benefit of the vice presidential search is that it's elevating women leaders like bass to the national stage. Kelsey Snell. NPR NEWS Washington This is NPR news. "Well lee be you you have all of that all these of a back i went darren in debbie near i think there's over ninety municipalities will been seamless county each has almost all of their employees to arm at their own city council you know they the other on city budgets which have to be funded up and the way they make money you know in st louis county is most of the county income comes from a sales tax well if you are a core county apartment more like the a black county uh you're going to get you're not gonna get nearly as much money from sales tax taxes the wealthier counties which means you could be more reliance on fines in court fees to basically jill your city coffers to pay your police department and so you know more you know the the the poor you're county uh the more likely it is that the police have been specifically instructed to shake you down by you know giving you find be goes your pants or to lower because i mean i've i've done one example when these little towns was they've installed a manual red switch where they could make light turn red and salute wait until there were five or six cars in the intersection you know crossing intersection during a green light neat flick it to read and another cobb would be down the road and pulled them all over when i mean i interviewed you know black people in st louis county you add protest a couple who hadn't but basically they said you know that's michael brown was just sort of the fuse i mean this was probably have for years because people are getting i mean they're people at five six seven arrest warrants out on them for petty infractions because they couldn't pay the fines and i you know this is an example living in this is where this is where you can have a criminal justice system that is racist.

"And so while it is a separate municipality the issues that affect st louis county in where ferguson is in st louis city are all the same and so government fragmentation and predatory practices within government policing issues in mistrust are all things that that we're dealing with and trying to figure out how we organize our operating departments to be more effective than to be more equitable in the way that they are delivering services and making sure that we're attracting the way they were doing our work in analysing it to make sure that we are having the types of impacts that we should in need and want to have and so i think our resilience word is both figuring out how we engage the community in an effective and innovative way more so than we've ever done in the past then also very internal and looking at the way the city itself the department's the city officials are operating and then trying to leverage the 21st century as i say to make it easier for us to do our job as well because we really not done a good job of using technology to this point when you go out with people about the q one to do as he developed a strategy for what's the sort of reaction to get the d day fleiss and extend what you mean by resilience and second deep feel they are able to trust with lower they do not understand what i mean when i say resilience i said to someone during the summit you know i was really hoping that at some point during the year that i've been in place i would stop meeting to explain what it is that i'm doing in that hasn't been the case yet so you know resilience is abroad and not well understood term so we do need to bring it down to a more practical level in talk about what that means for votes.
