Teddy Roosevelt's great-grandson says remove the statue

"Last month, New York's Museum of Natural History announced that it's removing a statue of President Theodore Roosevelt that many find objectionable. It's a decision that has the full support of Mark Roosevelt, president of ST John's College in Santa Fe, New Mexico and the great grandson of Theodore Roosevelt. The subject Gatien of other races. By those of us of European origin. Is our nation's original sin. That sin began soon after our arrival on this continent and his bait tragic part of our history to this day. If we wish to live in harmony and equality. With people of other races. We should not maintain paternalistic statues, the depict Native Americans and African Americans in subordinate roles. A statue of my great grandfather. Eared our Roosevelt. In front of New York's Museum of Natural History does so that it is being taken down. Some argue that we should not erase our past and it's such statues, Khun B. Invitations to examine and civilly discuss complex issues. That is disingenuous. That is what books and classrooms therefore not monuments. Monuments are designed toe honor people and to keep those honorees and what they stood for alive in our collective memory. We're all of us in this country. Bound together by the tragedy of racial subject, Gatien and continuing violence and multiple other affronts to black Americans and other people of color. Those of us with power and influence who say we wish to do better are diminished. Fire stalled failed. And woefully insufficient attempts to actually do so. Those with power and influence who will not even acknowledge these wrongs. Are an embarrassment to the nation. If we wish to allow for historical nuance, and I do To continue to recognize Washington and Jefferson and Theodore Roosevelt for their very really accomplishment. While also allowing that they like so many of us were complicity in our nation's original and ongoing sin. We must start by admitting that we've failed to acknowledge the depth of that sin. And immediately remove all memorials and statues honoring those who fought a civil war or otherwise worked to perpetuate that scent. And then we should get on with the desperately needed work of up roading, systemic racism wherever it is found.

"Your her body and welcome to this week's edition of recalls the sports said John your host brick walls I want to return to a troubling topic this morning that more more seems to keep coming back again and again I'm talking about the issue of pay to play at the high school level now you'll know we'll discuss this issue of pay to play several times before that is where high school coaches moonlight in the off season was running a travel program and that they have some other high school players play for that coach is outside travel team no these coaches of course routinely charge these kids these players these high school players of theirs to be on their travel squad this kind of situation always raises the issue always raises the specter of potential conflicts of interest and some parents quietly protest saying that's something of a given that of my child my youngster wants to be on the varsity team next year then there high school coach fully expect him or her to be on the travel team parents just sort of assumed that this is the the cost of admission so to speak to have your son or daughter be on the varsity ball club and of course this added travel team cost well it can run into the thousands of dollars now the high school coaches as per most school districts well they defend their travel teams and they always insist they always insist that being on their travel team instructional strictly optional it's up to the parents and to the kid and round and round it goes but this morning let me take this pay for play in a different direction excellent article in The Washington Post reported by Roman Stubbs a very successful high school baseball coach in Washington DC well he runs a travel team program for his players in the summer that goes into the fall but the coach and the high school where he works make it clear up front that when the youngster signs up for class at St John's college high school there if he wants to be on the school's baseball team in the spring well the ball player agrees to play only for the coaches travel program in the summer and the fall and that the kid and his family agreed up front to pay the two thousand four hundred dollars travel free each year now tuition at St Johns high school obviously it's a private parochial school it runs twenty thousand dollars a year and of course the twenty four hundred for the travel team was on top of that not to mention the the extra cost of course for when you're traveling in the summer time paying for hotels meals tournaments and so on so forth because as of course when the travel team plays its games and again here's the kicker if you don't pay the twenty four hundred dollars your son is asked not only to leave the baseball team but to leave the school as well now I understand St John's college high school to top high school program they routinely send several players each year to division one programs colleges like you V. A. U. N. C. Virginia Commonwealth Mississippi state and so on this is a big time program but it also seems to be a rare program where in fact when you enroll in the school you agree to be on the coaches travel team and you have to pay for it if you want your kid to keep his spot on the roster well this to me is sort of different it's unusual it's creative and it's been doing to look from the school's perspective the coach's perspective they're being very for very honest up front as to why they're doing this I will take your calls about this because I just think this is so different it may be it may be a comes to pay for play in the meshing of travel programs with high school varsity programs we may be seeing as as this is the wave of the future it also allows top high school coaches to make some extra cash with the travel team in the offseason and again from the school's perspectives on the school St John's college high school in the city they say that by having the coach watch over his boys baseball players all summer he can keep track of how many innings are throwing how many innings of pitching how many at bats each kid gets it gives them more control to make sure that these kids don't get hurt they don't get the you talked so too much and they're getting plenty of playing time or is this actually just asking too much of a high school player and his family to be waited for four years to a summer league team which is run by the coach yep this past year I have to tell you according to this article in The Washington Post five ball players five good ball players transferred out of St John's all the top D. one level potential players because I didn't want to play for the coaches travel team and the way I understand it once they said no the school said okay you have to leave the you have to leave St John's one eight seven seven three three seven sixty six sixty six again I say this as this cuts in lots of different directions I'm curious to get your thoughts and observations and comments about this because I just think this is so unusual but it may be the way it's going to be down the road in fact when I when I tweeted this out yesterday this topic I got one one response came from school high school down in in Florida and plant and plant city plant high school where this happened same comparable kind of thing happened last year but plant high schools the public high school the coach was basically telling his players well if you want to be in the baseball team which is also a top top a high school program in the state of Florida you have to be on my travel team the different there because you can't really mandate at the the school district campaign date the kids a pay you extra tuition for a travel program but it was pretty situation where the coach was reprimanded was actually fired from the school as a baseball coach and then he was retired a few weeks later so this is a real issue for a lot of people and I'm as I said I'm thinking that you must have some thoughts and comments about this and again going back to the five kids you transferred out well three of the families involved got a lawyer and they complained they complained to the St Johns high school administration St John said they had done nothing wrong they say this is not this travel program to coach runs is not a money making venture even though they have something like fifty five ball players within their program who are paying twenty four hundred dollars a year and it's not really quite sure you know where all this money goes because you know it it's it's a it's just unusual it's it's it's just different let me let me let me ask you this if you know you would think the next question these would Saint John's what they reveal it to coach their coach is making any money from the travel team Washington post ask other coaches are on travel teams that there in the in the in the same area in Washington DC they said well they're usually clearing eight thousand dollars or so each summer for for the coach simple as that let's talk about this again this may be a preview of what's going to happen in more and more high school sports as much before it's it's going to be something we're maybe high school coaches and travel team programs are going to come together and say okay this is how we're going to do this because from the coach's perspective critically he's running a really good program he's also you know if you want to stay at the high school and continued Kochhar varsity baseball team and run your whole program you're going to have to give me this this extra travel team permission so that there's no I don't wanna go on someplace else simple as that and and run a travel program with that you're without your direction okay let's let's let's court your call is one eight seven seven three three seven sixty six sixty six let's start our conversation this morning with Jimmy out of Asbury park over in Jersey Jimmy good morning you're on the fence good morning Rick so yeah this this is quite astounding my son his college ball now but he played high school ball at a rather elite Bergen county parochial school let's just leave it at that okay had a strict rule that the the coaches could not run you know a travel team associated with the school and all this and and and even though this parochial school you're always ask for money and donations which is fine you know they didn't go for the money grab the end and that's what this whole thing looks like it is to be I. B. hi I'm wondering what the finances of the school are in general if they're allowing this thing to go on I think that they would be connected to me I I you know again I'm just reading this is over again to find account in The Washington Post you know as I just mentioned this may be a situation where and this coach has been at the he's been the head coach at the St John's for close to just twelve thirteen years as I mentioned he sends the the Lotta kids on to college programs and he's won all sorts of titles in his conference so he's got a wonderful program the question is you must have said at some point to the the high school administrators look I want to protect my kids in the summer leagues I don't trust other travel teams I'd I wanna do this some of that so what I want to have happen is make it clear up front when the key comes in my school comes to St John's he's going to be in the travel team that's sort of part and extension of the tuition twenty thousand dollars is a good chunk of change but he's also in effect saying to the school and if I get paid something as well well that keeps me from not having to jump to my own travel program so we're gonna go home happy and the schools the sort of saying that they're not going to comment on that because they only reveal how much money is this fellow was not made but clearly other coaches in this conference is saying yep we want travel programs but our school says you know you can't have a travel to I'm affiliated with the school were coach but we're going to make will make up the words to eight thousand dollars running a property as a personal into his own personal pocketbook every summer so it's a way of trying to keep the the coaches happy I guess at at St John's college but you know it's it's difficult journey undershirts are clear how to make this happen but thank thank you for you this morning but those who want to our friend ed ward over Elizabeth ed good morning your next up on the fan wow this is a net revenue topic high school choir school about coaches telling kids that they got to stay with their program yeah that's right out if you maybe you made a statement said that the guy I want to keep away from certain college I mean certain travel probably greater than think that's good yeah if you're a high if you're a high school coach you're smart enough to know which travel baseball programs are good which ones are able to promote their players and all that stuff yeah hi I coached as a former college coach I coach travel now which I understand you know that you know we're in this to try to help kids which I do but yet we are we are trying to make make make make make make a dollar on a side also I'm gonna tonight at the course but the point is it out Jack to tell high school kids that if you don't pay for my travel team you know you you can you can you can you can't plan the high school team supposed suppose your father spoke the kids father knows a guy who was who runs a travel program and has a proven.

"Talking to us yvonne mccue thank you thirty minutes to eight is the time time for thought for the danes non newcastle studio this morning is the reverend professor david wilkinson whose principal of st johns college at durham university good morning dra morning justin some michael bob of the incoming chair of the office for students has suggested that university should be places of intellectual discomfort always intervention might be timely in terms of freedom of speech on campus it raises broader questions for education perhaps at this time of the religion in fact my own vicechancellor for some years and is welcome to new students here at durham university has been suggesting rightly that education is to be fruitful it should be difficult and challenging and by the way in the education shouldn't be the excuse for an appropriate parties of course making students uncomfortable nbc the right context this is not the serious discomfort of sexual abuse or the misuse of power or the trivial discomfort the awkward silence following a lecturer attempting to tell a joke nor is it the lack of respect persons genuinelyheld belief s cultural lifestyle it is to see that at the heart of education is not the memorized answers to examinations but the ability to ask questions of south of one another and have inherited tradition in a common search for truth this can be disturbing for the socalled snowflake generation of millennials who are often viewed as being less resilient a more prone to taking a fence alongside this one could suggest that there's also snowflake religion whether constitutionally vulnerable believer is combined at this time of the year at least for the christian with the nice story of a manger wise men and tidings upon tidings of comfort and julie religion becomes a safe space where difficult question should not be asked and jesus becomes sentimental and ultimate be boring let me christianity israeli functioned in this way it often provoked.

"Pacific and find the pacific ocean the american kids are maguire its merkin kids could i find the pacific ocean right now there are also that similar problems exist in other countries to me uh in germany they couldn't identify whether a the netherlands was next door enough that's not the same as being able to pick out the pacific ocean i agree an and to me it's a metaphor for the fact that we we have lost a of a desire a will a drive to educate our students on matters that are outside of their own backyard and yeah we have these little devices the we all carry round most of his key around smart people ever flip phone as dummies have they have the smartphone we all carry this round the connec says globally all day long that's right and so it's a great the anomaly let me why you know how does that happened so one of the things we're trying to do is to provide programming uh uh a content and opportunity for young people to get involved in these things we invite them to our talks and um and it's been a great success over and we're really a continuing to work on that so the gut and we also have a relationship agree relationship now with the st johns college though through internships in other sorts of what about the united world college which is a college of foreign students right and we have uh we have met with them several times we've talked with them i i have not immediately aware that we've actually done a programme with them if they are very much honor rate yeah but you guys it'd be a resource if they ever needed you've friends of mine the santa fe half thundered the marathon and they bring in runner from kenya and the chart the runners fron copper cain tara maher yeah they bring in these use yugai for the a royalty this coming from kenya rightly reached out to you guys in you guys helpless host of in you guys say that's what we do sure at itself and as a great pleasure for us to yeah that's really glenda and uh in i world colleges one that we.

"Of arch in great books and honors for her thesis on his geography of st john's college and santa fe new mexico she's written several books on kim trails harper the fullspectrum dominance of planet earth she's now we're going to book about space rents alana welcome to ground zero have i i know you're working hard on that book as we speak i called you you're in the middle of writing and i i am sorry i have to interrupt you're writing but i think it's very important you give us some ideas and so your opinion on what's happening here it's very strange that we have cell phones not operable after a bright white over arizona the pentagon and the department of defence talking about beefingup satellites because it may affect armies and of course gps tests done by the naval by the china lakes they will facility and muhabi what are you say that well up here in the pacific northwest's along with you and i'm in washington state which as you know has a tremendous citizen outcry against the growl or the us navy gretler jets that r e w jets say electric warfare air are to the teeth with state of the electron x and i can't help but feel that up here with this socalled the exercise that's beginning today and will rent throughout june four testing on exactly what we talking about communications which to the military is really all about control the c 4 and that they adhere to command control communications and cyber warfare so what i'm wondering is with this a shutdown of gps signals what else is happening with that and is some of it happening here we guarding the gralow jets being able to exercise their eyes state of the art equipment on board because always is below they are tethered to mobile radar units so that's what i'm thinking and then we can we can definitely talk about what's what went on over phoenix but that this is what's on my mind right now the growl or jets taking advantage of this military exercise which is partially because they've been really talking up the cascade cascadia rim and potential earthquake which happens every four to six hundred years the last one being unions seven teen 100 so there's so many things going on right now and they all have the imf imprint mitch chore.
