2021 Super Bowl Ad Review

"Like there's two ads. I've really want to get everyone starts on I think they're the most polarizing we'll certainly talk about our picks for the best. Although i will say this year it was not exactly like a plus plus it was like you know pretty good lead like the the best ones were all pretty good And none of them were were tremendous home runs But that's the two that were kind of late editions. we already talked about only in passing But then also the two minute. Gps dot with bruce springsteen. Let's start with that nicole. I think we all know what what they were. Attempting you know like cheap wanted this rousing halftime in america type ram farmer. Type spot fill. It really fell flat. I actually kinda surprised that they released that one early because it was a two minute long spot. I thought at least it would be a two minute surprise So that was a little shocking to me. But yeah then when i saw it i was like oh man two minutes okay. Let's get cozy. Let's see what this is going to be like. Am i going to be laughing like last year. Because last year was such a pleasant like fun. Add to watch and this one. I just kinda felt like. Oh they're going like the safe route they're going like the middle of the road route. They're going to do the call for unity and also like to me. I as a consumer from the consumer perspective. I didn't love that. Because i feel like if i want to see a brand lean into its purpose i wanna see them. Take a side not do the middle of the road thing. I know that that's where a lot of Like i guess politics wise lot of people doing calls for unity but it still felt like a little too early for the brands to start doing the calls for unity. Like i'm still waiting for purpose from brands rather than middle of the road right now. I guess my question would be in. Jameson a. You and i talked about this many times. But i can't think of a brand that has ever succeeded by being like can't we all. Can we just come together. They learn anything from gap putting up that tweet that it was like a hoodie that had like read into on it and it's like a collie unity shoot rented after election day. Jeep is like we're going to spend twenty million dollars gap bruce springsteen in here and do the same exact thing in front of a hundred million and hope it works. I mean it was a touching message that i felt ill timed and i saw one tweet from at its kenya summit. A perfectly like what they displayed in that ad fundamentally goes against lead. Diversity inclusion is in america right now. And i think right just did didn't didn't showcase what america is today showcase a unity of one america used today. And you know what. I would have actually appreciated if they just re-run last year's groundhog day ad and donated that money to a cause that actually supports you know unifying missions I think that would have been funny and understandable and Yeah that that really fell flat a lot of the ads this year. Celebrities team to kind of try to force things like the cuts. The storylines is just we. I felt like the in this kind of i guess my last real thought on jeep is just the it's the kind of add that cmo's and and if i'm just being honest here because it's late i'm tired League basically wealthy white folks and and and just affluent people in general kind of ivory tower folks are gonna be like what a brave message like wouldn't important message. I'm so glad they used their storytelling to do this. You know what i mean. And and that's but to everyone else on the ground like who who has survived this past four years and knows how much farther we still have to go. It's just like oh there's a small church in kansas. That's that leaves their doors open. Okay cool then. Never mind like we're all good and you know it's just anyway. That's that's my. But i i also wanna make sure we say plenty of time talking about oatley because who wants to start us off one. No we haven't gotten to talk realism curious. I loved story. edited the story By katie lindstrom and No they wanted to go with something else in there. Trying to come up with With all these eight years and ended up like the ceo was kind of forced into the spot because he was like well. I guess i have a better idea. And he brought back an idea that he had and it was just him trying to come up with a jingle and From i saw you know it. It definitely caused a stir In terms of using a simple melody and a simple backdrop and like a shaky table with you know that lovely oatmeal gone. They're really worried about that class. Like nobody take this down from production. Okay we're going to go with it. But i thought it was so so on brand you know it. It was not expected and A little endearing. And you know i am. I am a consumer of that brand. And you know they. They also laid that message with you. Know the mission of. Let's also be sustainable and talk about. Let's let's take a quick pause to listen to the song for anyone who might have missed it in all of its glory It reminds me of like kind of like nineties weirdo alternative Kind of punk music. I don't know there's this weird vein of like intentionally bad dead dead milkman. style was. let's give it a listen made for you. Who moves like male but made for you. Well no no no no bill nicole. What did you think of the okay. So here's the thing. I actually when i was first watching it. I thought to myself like oh. That's actually kind of cute. I don't hate this. And then everyone i was in the room with just got quiet and they all just started like laughing at the same time. They're like oh. This is terrible terrible. We hate this. We all hate this. So i actually think that i'm one of the few. Maybe i'm i'm the right consumer here or something. I like the brand also personally but yeah. I didn't hate it right away. I get the cornyn est. And i get that like i don't know maybe maybe now that i've listened to not while i'm also editing and distracted by other things i get it but i listen. I was kind of like oh cute. Okay i have to say. Maybe one of my favorite advertising tweets of all time. And i won't name him because he's a great dude and Good on him for his transparency but so someone tweeted that oatley dropped the ball and then a few minutes later shared his own. Tweeden's i've been informed that my agency created the and and so it's actually fantastic

"To be human books by memorizing a single book so they became living books. I was in the sixth row of this incredible show. I experienced it. As you know as close as you can remember, it was a small almost cabaret theatre. And I'm in the sixth row. And my art is on the marquee outside. And it was not the first time I saw bruce because I saw him earlier that summer in August. Garden and I, saw him I think it's Springfield Massachusetts in between but then the Capitol Theatre was my third Bruce Show but I've never been as close as the sixth row ever since. In my own words in my own enthusiasm for show that's been living in me for the forty two years as close to that. Fahrenheit four fifty one analogy is I can be is that I have been watching this show listening to this show. I know every single note of this show and I've heard all the great Oh winterland is better than Capitol Theater and Bruce. Fans listening to podcasts know exactly what I mean when I say winterland and here's the thing. If you were at the winterland show I guarantee you that is your single greatest Bruce Show and you'll say winterland is the greatest show but here's the thing. The audio tape exists it wasn't radio broadcast quality like Capitol, theatre. So yeah, I'll I'll take your word that if you were there and it was a great show obviously but. In the Court of Future Rock and roll law. Guess what the John Share show has on inside, and by the way when you read about the history of the Bible in the New Testament and how certain books. After Constantine became emperor and made Christianity Religion, he got together the council. And they declared which books we're going to be in the Bible. They were too many competing versions of the Gospels and all these apocryphal books and they had to sit around and decide. which books go in and which go out And what we've been left with for the past sixteen, Hundred Years or whatever how are the decisions that were made? and to me when discussing as music historians of Bruce Springsteen to get serious for a Moment Jessie. When you're presenting in the Court of rock and roll law and you're trying to come up with a consensus. Okay. This Guy Bruce Springsteen King, a rock and roll greatest live performer ever. Five decades six decade career. He still rocket out at seventy years old. But. Just, like the film critics get together every couple of years and they vote the greatest movie of all time, I think about that how can there be one greatest movie will not but guess what these are esteemed film critics and they get together as historians and critics and they hash it out. And by the way Vertigo ended up replacing the first time in seventy five years citizen gain but I digress. So my point is. Just. Like with the Council of Nicer certain bishops who wielded a certain amount of political power it was like a caucus. They were able to get what they believed was the right interpretation of Christ in. And it's the same thing based on whatever leverage you have. What does John Share have been the favored that? Winterland does not that a Gore theater does not that thought. John Share video ate the whole show. So, guess what folks. I'll agree with you maybe a Gore was a better show but not based on the audio quality. Are Endless. Okay. Yeah. Listeners this is what you're going to get. On the show. And when you see him sing. On the video. Of these incredible definitive live versions of his songs, not only some of the darkness song but some of the born to run songs. Their definitive live versions in my humble opinion. are from September nineteenth show. Songs like she's the one backstreets. Thunder road. You know it's the first time he revealed how he came up with the title of Thunder Road in a monologue, the song. And many people who love thunder road consider the single greatest live burgeon and it's on the night of September nineteen. Why do you think? Jesse he chose to tell the story of. So I am going to recreate as documentarian in my own words, giving you I the scope of the darkness era. That birth this show, and then I will show a combination of still images and video clips. that. I've called that I consider the greatest hits of that evening. Enough to fill up approximately two and a half to three hours of an evening with Arlen Schumer recreating for you the audience as best as I can. In words and images from somebody who was there you know? Not to switch gears, but there's a famous novel by Ray Bradbury Fahrenheit Four, fifty, one classic future, the soapy novel where all books are banned. And they're burning books in Fahrenheit, four, fifty one is the degree that paper Burns. That's why bradberry gave her the title. So spoiler alert I never read the book but I saw the movie once and you know how the movie ends and I'm assuming the book ends this way. Is that they succeed the bad guys you know the government in burning the books but The little. Bunch, of Jedi Knights. So to speak that, we're keeping the books alive. They trains human beings..

"Hello everyone and welcome to another episode of set lessening Bruce Your podcast all about Bruce springsteen his music and mostly his fans you demanded. You said, Jesse one episode with the man Arlen Schumer isn't enough. Are you going to have him back on and I said Hey Arlen you wanna come back and he said, yes. So Arlen, welcome back to the show. Thanks for having me Jesse. It's great to be here. It is so great to have I. got a lot of great feedback your last episode everyone. The big word is passionate. They just love your passion and it only monetize that. The richest man in the world as. So you doing okay I'm doing great. That's good. That's good and we talked a little before we hit record you're you're going to do a radio show. You're going to give us some more information about that as it gets more in there and I'm excited about that. Yeah. I got a two hours of Internet radio time whenever I want to do it. So I've got five webinars coming up in September and the fifth one is actually October second but yeah, it's in the same week in sackler. And I'm able to schedule two hours of Internet, radio time before each of those five webinars in order to drive ticket sales obviously on the one hand. But also it gives me a chance to kind of supplement because the Webinar I'm showing images and video clips and whatever especially with Bruce I'll be showing video clips and. in addition to my image clips, so to be able to have two hours of radio time, which is audio only no no like zoom like video. So it's classic Talk Radio in, but I'm going to be able to get. You know hopefully some pretty. If all goes well, people that actually worked with Bruce during it during the darkness era now, I'm saying that now to you that may not happen. So yes, everything but. and. Then in addition because I've got two hours, I want to have somebody like you coming on and giving me your perspective of the evening we're going to talk about which is something. I've directly experience whereas you have only experienced like you only can innocent secondhand. So this leads you to my question yes. Oh Arlen Schumer if you could pick. One night. That is the greatest Bruce springsteen show of all times. What night would that be? Well interesting. You ask since that's the whole suspect of my women are and I told you I was going to give you. Were like a gutter. Bowling lobbing. The Gutter. Okay I can answer the softball question. In the same way that when a hitter who's used to fastball hardball, he gets us off for he can sit and actually think about now where do I wanted it the saw? I WanNa hit it. Feel do I wanna hit opposite field yes. I WANNA bloop it up you know. How do I answer that question? Let me count the ways. Okay I'M GONNA try. The macro to the micro. Okay. The back row answer is. All of this subjective, it's like discussing art in general. Yes. There is no best. There is no worse there in the end, and then there are the factors if you were actually at the show. And then there are factors within factors but what if you were at the show but in the back row? Yeah versus up close completely different experience not that Bruce isn't the greatest live rock roper former where if you're in the back row, you were still on your feet dancing and that's wipers bruce. Yeah. So. With that said as a kind of Cavite. Yeah. But. When Dylan? Get. Together. Don't you think they debate what was his greatest show? Supposedly it's the Royal Albert Hall Nineteen Sixty six show in which a snippet of film I think exists and it's very dark and that's where somebody else Judas the famous incident and because he was a traitor to the folk 'cause right But I'm sure Dylan. Debate on a no. That wasn't his greatest show. I saw him in one, thousand, nine, hundred, seven open up for the grateful dead the grateful dead opened up whatever. And they get into bet you don't think they do that with the grateful dead. You don't think they do that with led Zeppelin or the WHO or any of the great bands. Listen I. Know a Frank Sinatra expert in New York City. He's the guy that got me this Gig to do these webinars with New York convention. And you don't think they debate what was Sinatra's greatest show absolutely. So in a way. This is both high and low culture. It's high the sense that art historians of every genre of every medium. They get together literally and verbally in print are they create consensus? They discuss why this work is greater than this other work and the more educated you are on. A degree in Nat King Cole you know what? I mean that you can discuss dry this performance by Kinko is better than that one. But of course, the word better always is going to have quotes exactly well it. So the row. That's. ambled answer right said macro to micro I. Know Hang On. So the reason we're doing this is Arlene is going to make the case that a certain show is in the discussion of the greatest show of all times, and this is going to be we're going to experience it He is doing a Webinar it's coming up on Friday September eighteenth twelve o'clock eastern time, which means it's going to.

"Do a quick programming on the air. I don't know if you. Have seen this. A group of Italian musicians did a cover of a Bruce Song. And to raise money for health. CARE. This is rock for rookies. Okay here. Listen this. Flag. was. Perfect. A lot of people have done this but they've all recorded the song individually their homes. Ends. So the cuts from their homes homes to homes so I'll send you the link. You'll. You'll. You'll like it. It's a very creative process i. like it I like. I I did some research while we were listening to that. So there there's two parts to that for you -CCOMPLISH mentioned earlier they are they are all Italian artists. Both of these are on spotify. He came out I think in twenty eleven the first one has seventeen songs on it. The second one has twenty five. So out on of springsteen covers for you to go check out. That's good and I'm. Bruce. BOB's a playlist I'M GONNA release. I'm GONNA include that in the show notes you can listen. So this was a lot of fun and so if you you you should keep track of when you run into other springsteen covers when you're doing your show and then like when you get another nine or ten go K. Jesse time to do another show, I was just thinking the same thing. There's bound to be or we can We may have a hard time matching the highest scorer the. That's okay. This was this was good. So. Okay. I did want to and I told you this beforehand that. You've been on the show once before you you we I think we were discussing springsteen albums, the eighties if I remember correctly. Yeah it was a really good thing but at the time I wasn't asking the Mary Question. So I gave you a little advance notice for this for those of. Your James Lipton yes, this is your favorite curse words. Yes this is. No one has ever said that, but yes, this is become the. J Armstrong is in honors English teacher in the Philadelphia area and he every year he his seniors he takes two days and two classes in a study thunder road. As a point they go through all the lyrics look at the imagery a look at the different You know messages possibly discussion, and then at the end of it, they ask his class and that's I'm asking you Bob does Mary get in the car at the end of thunder road. I mean. How couldn't she with him? Saying you ain't a beauty but hey, all right I, mean she had been one over immediately. Yes. All kidding aside I do think she got a car because I mean it's a town full losers. He's not going to stick around. He's already been there through the screaming her name and the graduation see I I don't know if this may be taking it a little too dark but the whole graduation down lies in rags, their feet of implies either some metoo going on there that. Could be trying to get away from. So Yeah. I think she did I mean, what's the alternative you know saying this? You know rundown beatdown existence or take a chance on the thrill of the road with you know the All get into that. Lurks lurks on now. Is that the sensible choice I don't know about that but I like to think that that she did and I think Bruce Probably thinks she's into okay. Very nice. Very nice. All right. So bended scoop tell us again where we can find it talked to us This a Bendon scoop the the original tagline I came up with it was that it was a podcast about Music Murtha Minutia, and the way that it's archerd Richard is every episode mentioned lers about forty five to fifty five minutes long usually. Building around Tim Songs, I'll put ten songs on there and. I let the music do the heavy lifting. I don't do a ton of talking, but I'll give some information about each of the artists in the songs and making a little. Item of trivial interest or maybe a cracker joker to. And what's fun though is I enjoy inserting a lot of these different. Clips throughout because really the origin of everything right down to that name been. Goes back to my love of music from a young age I mean back to win s my dad would take me to the record store in the showing eight year but would let me get. An album out of the quarter used record bin right early seventies, right so and. All the way to now. So I've always loved music in this is part of that growing up with music and growing up with the movies and the radio of the day. So yeah, there's. The just the intro to the show. There's a lot of movie clips I love and air. There's interstitial between some of the songs you know Jane, goals from the old days and I always always end or or close to the end of the show in a movie trailer from a movie, and usually there's some same. Nice. That's why I get the title of the episode from that as well. So it's just kind of a fun pastiche of pop culture from that era time. Modern music you know and and if you are someone who I candidly like me. Who's kind of you know stuck in I like what I like and and you know to me being, Ooh, I like Jason is bull fight that isn't exactly cutting edge Indie Rock, right? You know though I love his new American album but right, there is a lot of fun music out there that you can sample. And the what I would tell people is you may not like everything you hear, but I almost feel positive. You're definitely going to like some of it and you're going to find things that you wouldn't have just stumbled across ordinarily and that's the whole point like you said Broadened your musical rise. And back when Bob and I are working together. I was going on a road trip and and I said I at this time he had really had gotten kind of. Involved and really liking a lot of you know less mainstream music and I was becoming obsessed with Harry Potter and he used to like I worry about my boss sees little. Butter I said. but I was going on some kind of road trip and I said, hey, make me a CD and like, would you want like just? No, just pick me and You're the first she him right in my getting that rig. Yes Before they kind of hit it. You were talking about it and and so I really I. What I like about the podcast is you're right. I don't like every song but I like the diversity in the chance to my ears to hear something different and if you can invest forty five minutes and come up with hey, I really like that song like that artist I think it's.

"Own. All right. Any foot before I give you my thoughts. What what what are yours? I. Think it's a good cover, but it's it certainly does it really improve or or do anything unique with the original? It's it's more just kind of like a bar band covered just done well. So. first off, this is my brother deans favourite's springsteen song. And so So I always think of that my notes were a good cover but nothing unique or special. I'd just I like. Bama. Boyz like. Enlisting to adjust now unlike. in fact, I, changed my rating because I'm like they they throw in some nice harmony. You know it's a good solid cover and you're right. It's like if you. If you were in a if you're in a bar band, you know you're out at a bar and you know they were doing different covers you would go crazy for this. You know springsteen Fan. So yeah absolutely of the kind of sales in comparison to some of what we heard running exactly that they kind of made it their own. This was just they embraced it solid, but I still give it eight out of ten car washes. Yeah. Yeah. All right. So what are we got next? Okay. Now we're going to start getting a little more indie both in types of band in the sound itself this next band, the format, and this is a cover of for you, which, of course. Was a hit for both springsteen Anna believed admit for man also get hit with as well. They kind of had a cottage industry off, of Bruce, for album be so. And I've always liked that song Great Kim also. Cover that as well and I. I didn't include him on this just because he wouldn't qualify these this these guys do but. This is a little bit of an unusual version. I'm not going to say one way or the other, but let's take. Okay..

"And then he gave. That's on the way and I think that is specifically the one little Steven said really And you think about when this After he was huge and the live set came out. There was that A video of him with someone with an accordion him doing fire. And then of course Robin Williams doing elver Fudd doing Bruce springsteen covering fire and you know It is a absolutely amazing song With a lot of depth in you can sing along. You know that. Break where you know. He pause and Romeo and Juliet and your dislike it is. I've never seen him do it. Live I would love that but I think that is a great choice And by the way you know like Linda Ronstadt did a version of I should fall behind on one of her albums. I mean if you look for covers avail. I shall the fall behind. It's been covered a fair amount of time. To which goes back to your premise. Right that if it's a great pop song other people will flock to it and we'll do versions of it. It becomes sort of a standard. Yes someway right right. And and there's so many of those with with springs. I can think of Covers of other songs that I really like a lot Like one step up getting another one. That's been done quite a few times or you know it's just I just heard this this cover version of a few weeks ago. Is a band called the downtown boys? We talk about them. A LITTLE. Bit On our podcast. Okay they're out of Rhode Island their punk band out of Rhode Island and they cover dancing in the dark okay Japan a that. I absolutely loved like well but a lot of people hate it and so to me. That's almost like sort of like the signature of like a great performance. Like do you get that kind of emotion on both sides you get back I think it's great and one of the things Again it sort of speaks to the song is that it can be interpreted in these different ways and it can elicit that that sort of emotion From the listener right well. Very nice Patrick before I give mine are there Are there any honorable? Mentions you WANNA go into no good? Okay you sure Jesse all right so you know. I did a lot of thoughts Without you which came on the blood brothers documentary. She's kind of that Monday in going. My Journey of health is no retreat. No surrender is what a lot of springsteen fans us as their mantra. As they're fighting cancer Alzheimer. You know depression unemployment. Whatever you do this whole no retreat. No surrender and so. I think it's a wonderful pop anthem. You can sing along with it I think if you ever want if you're ever sad Do a google search of no surrender. Houston two thousand fourteen and there is two brothers. They get on stage and sing the whole song. Dan and You know they are. I kicked I busted my brother out of school and Bruce brought him up and there is just an example of just joy. These two guys were having a blast so that was my last choice in. I just three Vancouver. Pass just Your Dad the joy of that and the defiance of you know we no retreat. No surrender is just. I think a great anthem in in a wonderful pop song. It's hard to argue with that. That's that's incredible and let me just tell you quick store that the first the second time I saw spring seeing I had a huge gap I. I saw him on the tunnel of love tour in the late eighties and I didn't see him again until The working on a dream okay. So there's a huge gap there and When I went to see him that second time there were like three songs on my wishlist. That was like he plays these three songs. I'm going to be so happy with. No surrender was hungry heart and the other one was Rosalita out my and he played all three of those songs that Nice. Oh that was. My dreams came true. You know the thing I love about. No surrender to when you see it live is just. How much neal's gets into that song? Man Man is jammed. That thing is so great. It is and There is an springtime for springsteen is a couple of guys actually from the Maryland. Area that Decided to do a springsteen they wanted to do a podcast and they just picked because they didn't know anything about Bruce and they just said okay. We'll do the springtime for springsteen because one of their best friends and you know they had a theory which I think is hilarious. They said I think the East banshee just do nothing but covers. I think they're the greatest cover band in the world. They should just tour doing nothing but covers and I'm like I don't totally agree with that theory but I do understand the Senate behind it. They are such a great band. Yes an when Bruce Pools that whether it's you know I can't action whatever he can play it Guys this was a blast. I appreciate it. I'm so happy so Tell us how to reach you. "Say but when I hear the springsteen version which is on the promise one of the first thoughts I have is when he gets up that part about you got a hold on me rock from the START I think like sounds like Elvis Presley Act. Yes and then I go and research it and go like he actually wrote that opening the Elvis Presley would record it and Elvis. Right so like. That's an amazing thing right there that he that he's sort of like you know. Has that been referencing? Sort of channeling. That but here's the beauty of that Song. It's like you know lyrically it. It's just amazing. The the RHYMES and the way he put so much truth to that song. But but just think about this. Doo Doo Doo. Doo Doo Doo. Doo Doo Doo like. That's that's the song. It is patience renaissance. That's the song issues an incredible song. You gotTA BE PRETTY SELF CONFIDENCE. "Where we saw outside your house your quiet common around. Put here along to your own off I think that is beautiful. You know I have different drums from winter fronts that I was in college and this girl that I was assumed was going to be the love of my life broke by art and I went into head headphones and just played that song on an album over and over again that was the day. No it's true and I I love that feeling of because pop doesn't have to be happy. It can be the sad song that that you can almost wrap yourself in that sadness and in a healthy way work through that I mean I'm going down about you know going down in every sense but exactly you're right you know it's like yeah. I get that you no longer love me but whatever well we're here for you now and mostly holding for you just need a different drum by the way written by Mike Ness Man. You knew that right. Yes Ed Yeah. Great pop songwriter. Absolutely you know the other thing. I think it's important to talk about and going down is if you're going to write a at least in my mind. You know a checklist of things. That make perfect pop. Song is repeatable phrases. I I don't know if you guys remember you know the there is a Saturday night. Live skit where You know people casual fan seeing the Beatles and they only know the little catchphrases penny lane is in my head and in my heart and then they're river And I think that has a lot to do with pop. You know that that catchphrase are that the chorus or or some the phrase it's repeated and I think that's a great you know I'm going down as a really good example of that so well done all right. Thank you all right. Oh man go. I'M GONNA play off of this. Are Patrick said about the sort of the sadness? The other thing about a great pop song is it doesn't have to be a UPTEMPO song. Right could be a slower song do. And there's a song a later period springsteen song from what I call his wilderness years where he was Without the East Rabanne Ryan do something else. And it's called if should fall behind us and it was originally on Lucky town. Yes which is a really underrated record. That's a really good record. Totally agree but then the version that he recorded with the reconstituted e street band later on when they are running around two thousand. I think When they reformed. And we'RE GONNA go on tour. It's amazing go check this out. There's a video of it that you can watch on On the Youtube or whatever it is so amazing about this song really sort of makes me. It really almost makes me kind of tear up every time I watch. It is that it's one of the only times. I I've ever known him to really allow the other band members to participate vocally in. Yeah track in a in a in a substantial way and it was because he was getting the band back together and he thought like Hey. Let's let's do this song. And each member of the eastern band takes verse in. It's a very sparse song. There's just re really just kind of lovely little guitar part. The melody is just beautiful. But what makes it just a perfect pop song is? There's two things. I is sort of the sentiment of the song. Which originally written was you know relationship song but in this version takes on more of a friendship kind of meaning Great me but In in its simplicity which I think is also important but the beauty of it is you know when you write a great pop song true greatness it has like a universal truth yeah right yes and. I can't really think of a relationship song that kind of speaks to what Are All about better than the lines I'll wait for you and if I should fall behind wait for me. I mean honestly like you does. Does that sum up what everybody hopes for wants and seeks in in terms of relationship right and so i. It's really beautiful lovely song. It's very simple. It has almost gospel feeling to it and It's just a perfect pop song.

That's amazing about Bruce's his the catalog of the songs he didn't release you know if those who are not hardcore fans tracks is hey box set of just outta songs that didn't make the cut right and there's like four CDs of songs that is amazing Yeah I I love that song and I think it's a great choice. Thank you all right. Excellent all right now. I get to go right. Go Joe Okay. So since you mentioned tracks Jesse I'm GONNA stick with that for a second here and I'm going to remember a time that I saw a springsteen a few years ago I think I've seen him total of six times and one of those times as a few years ago. He played in Charlottesville Virginia. And Jessie this was so cool because in Charlottesville the arena there the basketball arena where the University of Virginia plays. It's about fifteen thousand capacity. Wow which makes it smaller than most of the normal arenas that that A somebody like springsteen would play usually those twenty or so so just that little bit of difference made it a more intimate show right pipe. The smallest he would play. Would you say Oh yeah anyway? So he's playing the show and they're my friend Chris. Wadsworth disburse show ever saw springsteen and In spritzing plays at one point pretty early on the show. He plays seaside bar song really. Yeah and it was great and then he finishes that up any says we're going deep on tracks tonight and the next played which is one of my of this year which I think is just an incredible pop song in that Brill building. Sort of style. Give the girl a kiss. Oh yes that is so nice. Gosh I would have loved to been at that show. It was great. Yeah Oh that is wonderful Good.

"To finish up in the week I have an episode where Jim and Patrick joined me to talk about pop songs and what are some of springsteen's greatest pop songs One of the things that Jim and Patrick do fairly often a rock in the suburbs. Is they talk about perfect pop songs. And that's what led to this discussion. Hope you enjoy it. Hey y'all this is Marian Hornak when I'm not singing to my daughter and talking music with the guys from rocking the suburbs. I'm listening to Jesse Jackson onset. Rusting Bruce She just Hillary one. And welcome to a new episode. Is Set listening Bruce? Your podcast. All about Bruce springsteen his music and mostly is fans. I'm your host Jesse Jackson and tonight I'm recording with two of my favorite fellow podcasters. That's right we are rocking the suburbs via skype. I Have Jim and Patrick with me. Hi Guys Hello. Jessie A. Why don't you guys introduce yourselves? You both have been on this show separately and you've been kind enough to invite me to your podcast. But why don't you kind of share a little bit about yourselves and your podcast and then we'll talk about what we're GONNA do tonight. Okay so I'll start sure. Been any point here. I'm Jim I'm Patrick Jim Lennon. Yes people need to know that and For the record when you go into court you have to state your name for the record right so patrick and I and he started a podcast called Dad. Raucously did and we did that for about a year and a half and that was when you were Nice Enough Jesse to have US each separately on your show and that was great fast handing best breakfast yes ever had 'em yes and we talked to you Jesse when we were down in Dallas as part of like a little road trip for the podcast rising that was great. And you were some kind of country fried steak yet and eggs or something here and you have to explain. I. I am a man of size and Jim and Patrick are both thin as rails. I'm looking for them. We're in this diner. And they they ordered pretty of. I was waiting to go. I'll have some yogurt and a little weak grass because they are just rail. I'm like hey. They have. Chicken fried steak eggs benedict. Let's bring it on so great great so we well anyway we were in Texas. Exactly it made sense. I think so anyway. So yeah so. That was great. We met you. We had a great time that breakfast and we talked to them than you had us on your show and that was fun and then we stopped doing the Dad Rock we because circumstances turn intervened in debt and made us sort of go off on our own is right and do a new podcast which we call rock in the suburbs. And we've been doing that for about six months. That's been going on a Monday through Friday. We changed up the format. It's daily show. Now's we try to keep the episodes under twenty minutes. Sometimes that doesn't always work but We talk about music it's I guess you would describe it. Rock suburbs because it sort of gives you the sense of like these are guys. Who are you know? Family dies. Sorta Leading the domestic life. You know we're older gentleman and we'd just love music sitting here in basement right now and I'm surrounded by vinyl records and you know it's an amazing thing and what we found is that there are a lot of people out there like us a lot of people we just got an email today from a guy says you've been listening to us for a long time and he's like fifty four and he's still in the music and he has a hard time. Finding other people share this passion because as you get older a lot of people sort of age out. They only listened to the stuff that they liked when they were you know teenagers and maybe in their twenties. And and here's some what we find is that there's a lot of there are enough people like us. We're total music geeks for life that they enjoy that perspective and they feel like they're hanging out with us and also Patrick. We should mention too that we usually now with the new show. Yeah Enjoy some beverages talk about ear because we liked to Jenkins could be out on me right now. I am drinking a troves perpetual Ip. Which I just picked up at the supermarket on the way over to Patrick's and I bought it purely because it was on sale and it's great. It's fantastic delicious. Yeah so good. Only ranking four. Well I in Eczema appeared music in somehow we Griffin. Cosima came to light that it was coming back for some time so we kept sort of promoting that and then we. We tried it on the back deck at my house and recorded a little party. And we had Ziemba tastings. Yeah didn't go that well I don't know what your experience is As I said I will probably not finish this but I'm sipping it out of loyalty when we do get together we will have to bourbon tasting in honor of our love of Louisville. So one of the things that Jim and Patrick do really well is they. They have theme weeks. They will have a guest that will visit with him for the whole as I do. Air quotes the week And they will talk about different stories they have done cover episodes where they talk about Cover songs they did a great Discussion of great songs. That you're tired of Which I thought was a really interesting for example springsteen's I'm on fire. This perfect pop song discussion started. Give me the history. And that's what we're gonNA talk about tonight. We're Picabo how come up Patrick I don't know what your idea. Then you know what I will. I will say one of the funny things about recording episodes that that published five days a week is. I can barely remember once that we that we had like. You know three four weeks ago. Let alone like several months ago right it. Just there's a lot of content there but the perfect pop idea came up. We're not the first one stoop sort of explore this territory personal concepts right. It came up with. I think the I. I think I was putting together. A playlist on my My spotify account where I was sort of challenging myself. That's what it was. I was telling myself to like one would darted. And that's it okay. So now let's coming back. I was like what would I put together as is a collection of songs that I think are just perfect and then the challenge of course was that I can only pick one song by any individual was initially my favorite song sometimes the best constructed but what makes it sort of like perfect song of that artist versus necessarily the one that you think is your is your own personal favourite right. So let's we came with the idea. Perfect pop there's been some confusion I think people because everybody has sort of a different different definition of pop and so it's like is it A. Is it a pop song? Meaning like it's not a rock song from people right might take it. That way is a song meaning it has like like sort of top construction like this is what I wanna ask you guys about. Right regarding Bruce. Guess and so that's got started. We've done I don't know we probably had about somewhere in the range of about fifteen perfect pops elections both from me and Patrick and then guests of the show and listeners have contributed. And we've had you know we interviewed Chuck Prophet of some people might recognize him as a musician of some note and he contributed to it. We also asked Nami Stinson. The replacements about it right. We haven't actually heard that kit and we still have that sort of been our archive so we have a couple of picks from him. So the springsteen question I think is a really difficult to pull back the curtain on. I so far. They have not blocked my phone number because I tend to call at least once or twice a week because when I listen to this show I I think if something and and so I was thank you. It's so I I was like well. You could go. Glory days or dancing in the dark as a perfect pop song. But I I said You. Don't let me send a curveball. Speaking of glory days to the guys and I won't pick a springsteen Song I'll pick something out and bowling was sup- The girls all the guys bad guys want was something that my son in junior high. He liked that song and I for some reason thought it was just this fun. Great pop song because it had a different tempos and it was clever and just a fun song and so I said okay. I'm GONNA totally go outside of my norm and suggests this a song Wait funny off overseas robber within those two. But I'm dying quite that creaming over into turntables. Bad screaming shoot me gem and Patrick. Email me and said you know you've been asking to be on the show? Why don't we talk about Bruce's pop songs? We think it would be a fun episode and I totally agree. So that's how this kind of came up with Did I remember? Correct guys. Sounds about right. Yeah that's we're going to you know we're going to print the legend right and we're going to be like a Jimmy Stewart. So yes and then the doors blew open and the truth man storm. Eilly US So we kind of did through an email. We came up with our discussion. That will we're GONNA eat. We each picked three songs that we feel are good examples of Bruce writing pop songs. I think we're GONNA have a little discussion beforehand. I I heard you had some questions for us. As he said we didn't pick glory days or dancing in the dark I know I picked one off you know born in the USA But most of us we Kinda pick things that you may not have thought about for the boss. GonNa go around the table but little stephen in the documentary. The you know the promise talked about. He said if Bruce had wanted to be a pop an artist who wrote to pop songs. He believed he could have been one of the best pop songwriters of all time. Now that's bowl claim from the pirate little Stephen but I do think there is a at least a grain of truth to that because win. Bruce wanted to do something. Catchy in and you know. That's easy to sing along with. He's very good at it. What do you guys think? And I think if I'm remembering I I often get the documentaries confused as the one from the promise and there's one on the river the ties bind but I think you're right on that. One didn't even say something to the effect of like you know in two years earlier. Ten years earlier some debt. Like like Bruce. Could've worked in the Brill building. Like he was that good sense like cranking out those those. Those catchy pop song by Carol Kane. Did right right. Yes the other thing to mention is you know. I do think there are certain songs like you said like dancing in the dark one of those that is completely catchy in a in a pop song and had that sort of Berry traditional verse chorus verse structure to it he also was like apparently just like wrote it like really quickly to be a you know when they are like we need a radio single and you could just do it like. That's an amazing thing. The one you didn't mention to that I think you know is is quite perfect but what maybe two. Obviously so hungry heart. Yes I totally agree with that. Yes that is in fact that was I guess. One of his first real radio hits. I think that was a a gateway drug to a lot of springsteen fans hearing hungry heart on the radio So yeah I think so. Did before we give her songs. Or maybe you guys want to share it as you give your songs. What was your criteria in what you thought would be a fair springsteen pop song and GM will start with you. Okay Oh in one of the things. I wanted to mention to.

It's Chris from South Africa wishing bruce very happy birthday. Hey it's still hosic live in Houston Texas from Chicago originally from Pennsylvania longtime listener Bruce Happy Birthday on his upcoming seventieth birthday day about a month after my sixtieth birthday so he's got ten years on me and just a couple more hit songs than I may have the key thing. I think that I've taken away from the whole experience. The last ask fifteen years and driven partly by Jesse's podcast and a whole bunch of other things is just a great number of Bruce Friends. We have both locally and around the world I mean we're going to the rolling stones show tonight here in Houston. Last night I hung out with the one of my best friends who have met from Bruce. Shows got friends in Chicago and Dallas Fort Worth and Portland in Sweden and all over the place and it's from traveling around and meeting people people who all have the same obsession with just a great time good music a great story songs that means something and I've I've been blessed to be able to do that the last few years and look forward to a big tour next year and seeing some of our friends as we go around the world. It's been enjoyable beyond just as podcast a couple couple of times. I know one time Jeff from Fort Worth and our on and talked about shows we've been to and how we met and all those things and it's been interesting as the as our electronic onic fan world has changed how much we know people from other places that we may not know or we ended up meeting them you know last show is that was in Chicago and and met people that I didn't even know were connected to people that I did know that we're all on twitter feeds or someplace else so it's been great. Bruce has just been the basis of all my music listings and listen to a lot of that Brian Koppelman podcast and almost every person comes on there. That's a music person talks about how Bruce Bruce inspired them so it's not just normal fans but it's the other people who are really really talented as well the look on his work so we've been blessed to live in his era. like a younger lady told me when we were seen the rolling stones in Chicago last month you guys have all the good music and when you think about it we really have been blessed Rolling Stones and Beatles Bruce and and who and a million other bands and people that are in their forties or go on we don't have any of those good names and it's been enjoyable and afford to tour and twenty twenty and seeing all of you out on the road have a great day hi my my name is Karen Akers Semi K Barton. I currently in in Australia but I'm orig- originally from England northwest. Nice cars to England plays Co Blackpool for me. My junior into discovering Bruce springsteen started with Patti Smith. I bought her album eastern. In of course Patty imbros collaborated on because the night back in the day when we listen to vinyl we could read the record sleeve unlearn about the artists read the lyrics etcetera so intrigued when I realized Bruce Springsteen career written because the night I started to explore Hubris springsteen was the first opportunity I had had to attend a live concert with may nineteen eighty-one Manchester Apollo the original river tall that leg of the toll was of course we rescheduled from March to May as Bruce got sick and needed some time off anticipation had been building building and building a sense of disappointment when it was rescheduled but then may finally came by the time the Shari had had arrived. I bought the back Catalogue of Bruce Final on was well and truly bruce springsteen being fanatic river tall had been in full swing across the USA your since nineteen eighty all the music papers. I was reading Dan anime sounds record mirror were full of reviews detailing the energy the power the fools the rock and roll that is Bruce springsteen and the e street band Manchester Paulo came alive that night fairly eight years ago we were. We really prepared for what we witnessed. I'm not too sure we were bruce. Commended the stage the ban the music on us the fans from the very minute. He stepped on the foot of his platform Bruce Letters. There's through stories of his childhood. He's adolescence. His relationships Gordon bad he led us through the difficult times and happy at times. We sang along along. We screamed shouted clapped Fist Punch. The air we cried laugh danced in Hong off every word every chord what's every riff and every one two three four it was without doubt the best thing I'd ever witnessed. It wasn't adjusted. Music was the honesty in which bruce and the e street band perform. It's the generosity of their time their engagement in connection action with those the songs the sentiments the stories Roberta's we've lived stars lives of difficult relationships of hard work disadvantage segregation love and loss. Yes we relate we connect we understand there were sparks out on the streets of of Manchester for that night that night the shore what else can I say but thank you bruce and the East street band and a happy seventieth birthday to the man who has that special magic trick that can fails all logic where one plus one equals three. Hey Bruce Edrich Haski here in Madison New Jersey congratulations on reaching seventy and also on the new album another record with a new sound love at all but especially that first song attacking you know me but you've been running along with me and my family for a long while been with us for a lot of fun trips but also some unexpected detours and over some rough highways highways. You've been great company and comfort all along. It's nice to know you're still there talking in our ears. We ain't dominique care that anytime soon. That's for sure. Keep doing what you're doing all the best and happy birthday from US down the shore. This is Jeff Smith from Melbourne Australia calling to join Jesse's Bruce Bruce springsteen seventieth birthday project for the podcast. What a great idea. I just like to wish Bruce Happy Birthday glad that he's been part of my journey for the lost thirty odd years hope that he gets a great gift for his birthday. Gift is a plane ticket with the bent down to see us all industrial. You have regret one say I bruce my name's Bell Merriman. I live in Wales in the UK being found since since nine hundred seventy six it was thunder road me still my favorite number one song just want to say thank you for your music and you live shows got me through some some rough times are many many happy times have a really happy and healthy birthday and I hope to.

Listen to a lot of what my parents listen to and those their you know generation of news music from like the seventies and the eighties and so on i really grew up a lot on their music <hes> because i was an only child kyle so i don't know i was very close to them and we sort of all just shared the same case so <hes> yeah that's. That's a common theme. <hes> we see that <hes> did a when you started going to junior high high school did in your musical tastes change or did you stick pretty consistent. I mean i you know i guess during like middle school. Will i <hes> maybe listen to more like top forty like <hes> big middle school and <hes> like fifth grade read. Maybe <hes> just truly that those awkward years trying to fit in and listen to what everybody else was listening to <hes> burma but then when i went to high school i sort of gravitated back to when i listened to as a kid <hes> you didn't go through a phase where you were. Are you know rebelling against your parents and listening to scary music or anything. No i didn't go that far. I think i think the scary thing like i don't know like i listen in green day and like i was a little too much for my mom sometimes but no like furthermost the most part i was pretty good very nice <hes> so can you remember when you discovered bruce and yeah i do. I really do <hes> <hes>. I it was when the essential disc came out. I think it was either. I i think it was two thousand and three <hes> <hes> and my uncle burned it for my mom and at the time i was very into intake eighties music because i had seen back to the future and i was obsessed with it so i just love like anything increm- eighty <hes> the my mom so anyway. My mom is claiming bruce's music and i really like of course the born in the u._s._a. Now dancing in the dark and all of that and <hes> so i i typically remember like taking her death and listening to a like on my walkman on the bus <hes> in the morning so i started liking groups i think i don't i'm trying to think of how old i was in two thousand and three. I'm i'm i'm i think i was in in <hes>. I think i was in like i was either like eleven or twelve so around that and i started getting into bruce you and i didn't really start seriously like giving into him more <hes> when i was like sixteen crooner seventeen in high school and besides your obsession with the eighties excuse he's me what about the what about his music spoke to you yeah. Well you know when i was younger. It was more just that i just i don't know there was something about it that i really do something about the sound. I really liked i. I really love ah mary's place. I remember listening to it on the buzz. I don't know the roost it had that sort of new jersey boardwalk sound almost like like i just loved it <hes> and then in high school i read <hes> i read this book called prozac nation and it's about a girl that's lake lake just having a really hard time you know emotionally and she connects to bruce's music and <hes> at the time time. I was just sort of you know. I guess you know i was a teenager and just going through. I guess a lot at the time and <hes> <hes> i i i need a list of all the songs that was referenced in the book and it was like <hes> once i hadn't heard before it like it was like the hammer smith version of thunder road <hes> and for you like those version <hes> it was the crom so it who's all these songs from bruce. I had never heard when i listened to them out. It just seemed like articulate although like bad but i don't know all the turmoil like emotionally that i was feeling at the time and it just really. I don't know there was something so like this are all about it. I just loved it. That's interesting. <hes> those are great eight songs and i could see how <hes> that's interesting i. I've <hes> i've never read the book did not do that. <hes> they had <hes> she talked about. Springsteen's may have to check it out now. <hes> the senior yeah. There's a lot of passages. It's actually actually kind of interesting like she because the memoir and like the girl herself like she he grew up on the upper east side and she was you know she was very privileged and she felt guilty about that and she liked liked bruce because she league wanted to like live that kind of blake gown trodden blue collar life plagued attracted her because it was so opposite of her own experience so i don't know i just always to me. I always found very interesting and that's why i don't know it. Wean me fascinated with bruce. Wanna know more about them so as you started researching how'd you do it. Did you. <hes> you just by different albums that you <hes> just how what was your journey like yeah. You know. I'm trying to remember early l. so like i don't know if felt like i was like meeting an old friend for the first time like it was just yeah i just brought all the cds and i yeah i bought all the seas and eventually that snow until like <hes> getting into tracks and then getting into unreleased song and before i knew it like i was reading <hes> and by had done by then i was in college and the <hes> book by carlin came out the biography <hes> so i read that and i was reading all kinds of other books and yeah i we like hooked and i just it was very rare for me to like love every single song that an artist put out so with bruce. It was just like everything i listened to. I was like i loved. I loved this <hes>. Ah yeah it was just it was amazing so carolina. I always like to stress that the amount of times you've seen bruce is not a fair barometer kind of fan. You are because a lot of it can be dictated by circumstances where you live. You've all those things just for the record. Do you know do you have a count of how many times you've seen them live well. I mean i think if gas yes appearances count. I believe up to like ten <hes> 'cause. I didn't get to see him until the high hopes tour <hes> but yeah matt like ten times. You recently saw him on a little special time didn't you yes yes yeah talk a little absolutely <hes> i i. I've been talking to be a southside johnny for like a year. Now <hes> and i keep. I kept missing him like he would be. He would be in new york for new year's. Eve leave or he would be in new jersey for something and i i whatever reason i just never ended up going so i finally got tickets to him him on the stone pony summer stage which i've never done before and <hes> yeah honestly never even crossed my mind <hes> that bruce was would be there <hes> but you know i got a text from one of my friends as tame bomb in the crowd then before four i knew it he was playing with gary talent and i thought that was great and then the next thing i knew he was playing seven songs with southside outside in <hes> and it was just it was amazing wonderful summer nate <hes>. He did kitties bag they did. They did so armony songs and i. I just couldn't believe it was a <hes>. It was a really cool <hes> set list <hes> i and and i loved <hes> you know as a fan. Were kinda thinking you were looking for any excuse me it's like okay. That's did he's got the itch. It's been to las. He's performed. He's ready you sir. How was gary set. <hes> i enjoy gary. I actually only saw i saw the last half of the <hes> because i was trying to buy a parking but <hes> i yeah i was really cool. I had i had never heard his music war but <hes> yeah i really enjoyed it. I had bought his first. I <hes> c._d. Break time and i really liked voice. It's very different. It was a very cool cd t._v. <hes> had a little bit of different musical influences so i'm excited about his new one and <hes> i- homing tours outside of just the jersey area <hes> you know the ghosts like maybe come to texas so i could get a chance the siyam but yeah i mean. That's you know when he's up there with gary. I'm sure you're going. It couldn't be right like okay. Is he going to do this. And i'm thinking okay. He's going to do one song like they're gonna come coming non-core but to do that long. The settlers was just very very cool. I don't believe it frankly and especially because because he had been to the ponies and twenty eleven a rome talking about so i felt really special yeah so you mentioned a guest appearances a give me a few other examples of you saw them in the high hopes tour i know ended up going to broadway correct. Yeah i went. I went view time very nice. Yeah <hes> did and i i've via twitter you. You did get to kind of talk to him a little bit on the <hes> the going in or going out didn't you. I did yeah yes i mean i don't know how much he heard heard me say. I definitely tried to talk to them on you know i've told the story multiple times but when he was coming to austin for the book signing <hes> i drove all the way you know dallas alice austen three four hours.

"You know what they say a. Dave without springs being is like a day about sunshine so here is your springsteen. Springsteen thought of the day rain and storm in dark skies will now. They don't mean a thing if you got a girl that loves you who wants to wear your rain theme that bruce returns to often in his music is the idea that having a good companion in your life can make all the difference in the world despite the broadway show and the autobiography. I don't feel that i can make assumptions about his thoughts as a teenager or as a young man and but i can share mine. I know that in high school and in college i felt like i was alone and that i would never have someone who who would love me or someone for me to love then in nineteen eighty. I was set up on a blind date with a woman with two first name's linda carroll four years later we exchanged vows at our lady queen heaven in lake charles louisiana thirty five years later.
