"That's a good thing about having three. You've got one of everybody I noticed during this time I thought that the even more reading and working on screens. Instead of you know marking up a PDF writing in a notebook reading a paper book, even more of it moved online because it had to for all of my kids. It was a lot of typing stuff. Instead of writing things down and I noticed I have one kid who really struggled with that. Who needs the paper real life. On the screen, not with the you know snapchat notifications coming in the side. It was a little harder to concentrate. Oh, yeah, I mean my daughter, who is basically like drew made in a lab to thrive in elementary school. It was not for her. You know I mean she loves the social aspect. She loves being class. She liked the zooms with her teacher, and like where she was altogether in class, but and God bless these teachers. I mean God. Bless them the fat that they would even attempt. Anything to a bunch of eight year olds on a zoom class. Where like they're all talking at the same time, and so now let's look at how we add these two numbers and it's like I here's my dog. Look what he can do. I mean God bless these people. It was a hot mess. He right and it wasn't a lot of learning for her. and luckily she's a big reader and she likes baking, and so we were figuring out some numbers, stuff and I mean for her. We just didn't do a ton of. She didn't learn very much. Yeah, and it's OK when they're. They're eight and it's a little harder when they're in middle school. Right like in my case, the reluctant reader in my household became a more reluctant reader. Yeah, unfortunately, I'm reluctant. Reader became alike refused to reader. It was tough. Yeah, it's tough and I'm still dealing with that and part of that is like books instead of screens. Okay, let's read a book. Well, let's it became more clear to me. The ways in which my reluctant reader struggles when I was overseeing the homework more clearly, there are I mean thank goodness these days there are all sorts of ways our teachers, our kids teachers understand. Understand them that I think we even miss sometimes our kids teachers have a much more sophisticated understanding of our children and how they learn. Then I'll speak for myself than I. Did I was surprised by some of the things that one of my kids found difficult to do? I didn't really know it until I saw for myself because I was overseeing the assignment, not the teacher and it was a really good assignment for me because it's not that it alarmed me, but it was sort of like all right. Okay, this is a thing and this is something we're going to have to help this. This kid with the teachers had sort of taken that off my plate. To such an extent, I wasn't really aware of it. I've always made that argument about homework. I'm not a big homework person and not a fan. In general as a concept, they can be counterproductive in many ways, but the one thing I do like about homework is it gives me a half an hour at night to see what they're struggling with? You know. Oh, this kid! Otherwise he wouldn't be that dialed in which would also spoiler alert? Probably okay? Guess what my parents weren't dialed into how ratings in math class? And guess what happened in high school I was terrible at math and couldn't do anything, and they panicked, and then guess what my life turn five. Are you a math teacher now did it work out fine. I am not a math teacher. And like luckily I married a dude who graduated from Mit so I solved my own problem. Nice 'cause he can teach them pem. Dos and I can have a cup of tea. It's very. Jack Spratt and Mrs Jacks Brat Yeah. We can solve a lot of problems in this world. Don't have to do with being good at math when you're sixth grade turns out fine guys good to now the other thing that I think my learners found hard in this time was the lack of regular feedback like my high school has got us sort of mid Trimester report that the teachers very kindly like the main messaging was like great job. Everybody doing a good job i. see you working so hard. I see trying on zoom screen great job. They clung to that it was like an oasis in the desert, and it was hard for them to not see their teachers and not get that question and when. When they were getting over zoom, but it's not the same and they. I saw them with her a little bit from that lack of feedback from teachers. They were more worried about how they were doing when they weren't there in person with the teacher to pick up on their cues, I guess yeah, even that's a double edged sword, though right like Nia okay, a little less and I'm just so team a little less praise of our children go a long way, and so I think in general like I. Mean I've said it before the elementary school experience to me like the big problem with my kids, elementary school experiences, so it gets a magical wonderland of fun. And then welcome to real life kids Gal Magical Wonderland of fun, so I think a break from all of the feedback. Praise also has some upsides all right when we come back. Let's talk about how our kids socialized or not during this time. Amy By any chance..

"I feel like when you drink black coffee. You end up drinking like two tips and always throw it away no black coffee. I think i drink black coffee just because i'm lazy and i don't feel like making the trip to the fridge to get creamer or making the trip to the grocery sort of by it so i i just drink it out of sheer convenience and it tastes so bad that it actually does a better job of waking you up then coffee with cream in it for you drink. If you go to starbucks you get you. You get cream in that a little bit yeah. I'll be a little bit also sometimes. "So here's what we learned from professors, Fama and French and luck. You cannot draw strong inferences about a strategies potential from three five or even ten years of returns the corollary is that once you start following a strategy with impressive. Historical returns, you need to give it the benefit of the doubt for at least ten years even in the face of significant market lagging performance. This is critically important, especially when you look back over the last decade, or so because most active managers and active strategies have far underperformed the market the domestic market as measured by say, the standard and Poor's five hundred main prudence dictates remember, dear prudence, well, she dictates that. You have diversification diversification. Among. Asset classes asset styles asset managers. I mean, that's what we were taught and investment management one. Oh one you have broad diversification. Well, that hasn't paid off diversifying into the international and emerging markets, and stocks versus bonds, etc. Etc. Now bought the SNP you cleaned house over the last decade or so, and so therefore the Spratt Aji over the last decade that you might have employed certainly the one that I've employed hasn't worked nearly as well as the strategy of just simply buying the Standard Poor's five hundred now that is a strategy. And if you stick with that that's fine by an index fund. But the problem with that is people are fickle even with the index because when they see the market drop another couple of thousand points, and they're in the S and P five hundred they're gonna alter that strategy because that's what we do. To use a non investment analogy to close on this topic. The relationship with your chosen strategy is more akin to a marriage than a date. If you don't have the patience and discipline to ride out extended periods of market lagging performance. Then you should stick with an index fund that is benchmark to the broad market that way. Of course, you'll be guaranteed not to lag behind the market in each and every year. Of course, as I mentioned, the problem with that strategy is you and your behavior it's not the fund, and it's usually not the money manager. I mean, I've known just phenomenal money managers that fell out of grace for several years on end Bill. Miller's one of them. He was phenomenal turned horrible back to phenomenal again. And depending on where in the cycle, you ended up investing with them you either loved him or you hated him. Most people that loved him only loved him while he was beating the market, by the way. And when he started to falter. The assets in that fund dropped like a rock not only because his performance was bad. Because people were bailing like crazy only to find out that a few short years later. He didn't wake up and take a stupid Bill. And then all of a sudden get smart again, he was Mark all along. It's just his investment style went out of favor for a while. Very important lesson to be learned here. You must have patience. And I love the analogy that it's a marriage and not a date. Okay. Along those same lines. We have to talk a little bit about psychology here and some biases. Let's review four of the most critical bias sees hot hand fallacy. I think you kind of know what that is. This is the notion that because one has had a string of success here. She is more likely to have continued success. You know, intuitively that people can't always be the best performers, but something goes on in our brain. That says just because XYZ has happened. With, you know, whether it's a money manager or your financial planner, or whatever they have been successful in the past in picking stocks that they're going to be successful in the future that hot hand fallacy is a bias that can be very very hurtful. It's almost like picking the best mutual fund from the past two or three years. Morningstar Ibbotson had studied that they found that after three years of great performance, those great performing funds tanked next is regret aversion..
Christine Blasey Ford remembers "uproarious laughter" of alleged attackers
"She told her story, Dr Christine Blasi for the woman, accusing supreme court nominee Brad Kavanagh of sexual assault or testimony to the Senate Judiciary committee ended in the last hour. She said when she was at a party in the eighties cavenaugh shoved her into a room and jumped on her her time because he was very created. And because I was wearing a one piece bathing suit underneath my clothing. I believe he was going to rape me. She says Kavanagh's friend Mark judge also was in the room and she remembers laughter. Uproarious laughter between the two and they're having fun. At my expense. Right after the hearing ended South Carolina, Senator Lindsey Graham said I didn't find her allegations to be cooperated against Mr. cabinet. I don't doubt something happened to her. But she is saying Spratt cabinet. But she can't tell me the house. She city. She didn't tell me the month of the year. He's saying I didn't do it. "And at the end of the day, it's not braced. It can still come down to a small bunch sprint. So, yeah, it's definitely comes down to how it is raced as well. And that will be interesting to see. Of course, at the course it was a team objective to to make it an exciting race and to sort of put it all out there. You know, because it was a really great opportunity for us in terms of TV exposure. So it's important to use those -tunities and to really showcase women's cycling for what it is. So, yeah, as a team as an as an individual on that team, I was very proud of performance. The end, we definitely animated the race. Oh, of course. At the world champs, we need a country to be doing that as well. You know, I'm out otherwise. It's not necessarily going to be the amazing showcase that everyone expects it to be, but I'm pretty certain that there's a lot of motivation, you know, I mean, Austrailia also very motivated with Amanda Spratt who's head of very good season and also really good year. So for sure their team or a country that usually races aggressively. So. I sort of imagining that their team to look to in terms of putting the challenge out there to the Dutch because I think if we just put it all on the Dutch, I don't know. It could be interesting then it could end up being predictable or somewhat boring. So I'm hoping that there are some countries in, you know, in Austria in Italy, you know who who are going to put themselves out ban and try to go for the win. So it was actually movement Paseo, just talking about her prospects in the world championships. It would have suited her better. The finish been up the very, very steep climb that the the men go up. They don't finish up there either bunk. Nevertheless, it's a very hilly course and she should be in the mix. Translating that into winning the race is a whole different proposition and my and she's for all her consistency, which is pretty remarkable. She's always out there. She's always up there, flesh alone and racist that really hard races, but she still likes big, not. Big wing. Yeah, just that age. I mean, that kind of thing. You know what it is, what is it? But you have those writers who consistently get podiums consistently up there making these amazing performances but does not quite getting the wind. And as soon as they get one, then winds just breed more wins, but I can't hit happening for Ashley, to be honest. This year's just, oh, right in our off road. I mean, just. I think then I'm cash your dorm overseen, good forms. Absolutely. I think at least a longer work, Amy could be a good shite on a love to see her. Do well up there. Amanda Spratt has had an amazing season two as we know from previous Pocos. She has been targets targeting this. Yeah, I did know such those a lot of the OSCE on. If you go on straw for this climb, there's a lot of ozzy's on the top of the Queen of the mountain section. So I think they've all been out there and from ping. Parking. It didn't. She lost loss. Winter KP really shine as well because I would. I would guess that the they, the trillion team will have more cohesion. Well, I don't think it'd be difficult if more cohesion in the Dutch. We'll work together, but I think that that the straightens, it might be easier to get them all behind one writer, and that could be an incredibly powerful force. So actually, Amanda Spratt could be a decent Scheidt and it's useful to have that many people who used to that domestique role in one team because they all know their job is to do and spies the clear climber among them. They just need. They know that they gotta get to this point and that point and then see what she can do the end. He's good a good finish. It doesn't finish at the top of climate as finish at the bottom. So she's fast. Finishers low. Going back to what we were saying about Dutch dominance wanting to overplay it. It could be the first time that we see any nation of the one, two, three on the individual time, trial podium. I can't really see past unemployted under Bragan Ellen Van Dyke..

"PHD trained as a clinical psychologist now has an emphasis on sports psychology. In his Spratt practice he's also an executive coach and really coaches some of the most known, athletes throughout the world Mark great to have you. On this show again and I want to talk today about the narcissism that. Exists in our culture we're seeing it even at the earliest ages of kids and. Team sports with kids certainly permeates the. Larger culture as well and I wanna take a moment and talk more. Specifically about social media we have all of these different avenues of, social, interaction, with people Instagram Twitter. Whatever it might be and I believe in all of my heart that it causes people to compare, themselves with other people and that can only lead to To one of two things both, of which are bad either I'm, prideful because my life is better than yours or I'm jealous because my life is not as. Good, as. Yours and there's. Always danger in comparing, my insides with somebody else's outside we don't know what's really going on in their life in their, hearts and this comparing stuff it is just deadly in so many different ways talk about that please it's. A phenomenon that we've known about for some time in psychology called social comparison so if you're, comparing yourself to others it could be on any. Attribute it could be on intelligence it could be on looks at could be. On career could be on money could be on your possessions you're always gonna find somebody that's better at then you at. Something so if you look long enough you're going to find someone who. You don't measure up against now the danger comes in as we, were, talking, about in the previous. Segment when you think about self worth if your self worth or your self esteem is based on, how you stack up to others It's only a matter, of time before you're going to. Be disappointed it's inevitable I it has to happen because there's always somebody better as you just said yes absolutely and and so what needs to. Happen is your self worth needs to be based on who you are as a person your character your integrity your, values what kind of a friend am I what kind of a. Brother am I what kind of a partner am I have I made the world a better place in which to live absolutely and and when. You have that, intact. It's fine to compete everybody wants to be successful that's okay but then you do. Not need the success in order to, feel good about yourself that is. The key nothing wrong with. Wanting to be successful, nothing wrong, with being successful if, you're doing it for the right reasons and that. Is I want. To make the most of my God given abilities. And talents for my good in, the good of the world while I'm here on this earth. And success will follow but if you need success in order to feel good about yourself you're in a very, unhealthy place I'll just use the illustration that comparing my inside with somebody else's outsides can only We. Bring about two things in both of them are bad I find it interesting that both of them jealousy and pride are, two of, the seven, deadly sins, of the church and they're called deadly? For reason they can really kill the? Turtles soul like nothing else and the church? Over centuries identified these particular seven evils as the biggies that. Can. Really capture your heart and cause you, to fall so when. We're looking at jealousy pride. In the. Comparing idea that really does cause us to pause and say are these things really. Healthy shouldn't they yeah, absolutely and and so if we if, we take that into the research that's been done on motivation there are. Two states primarily that motivate people who compete or who drive for success one of those is ego and one of the other is mastery. So some people that compete half to beat other people. In order to feel good about themselves and they are ego oriented, individuals and competition those are the. People that you read about that are trashing locker rooms when their team loses or Unhappy when they don't. Get enough points or when they don't get enough recognition they. Don't get the ball thrown to them often enough those are ego oriented guys behind the scenes that demand the trade, because they don't think. They're getting, what they want on this team to, get to another team where they think they can better showcase their talent absolutely and it happens in business too so ego worrying individuals and businesses never. Enough why do these very famous people go to jail for ruining their companies when they were already multi millionaires, because it's never enough if? You're motivated? By, ego. Now the second orientational a, mastery orientation and.
