"sports travel magazine" Discussed on The Paul Finebaum Show

"Of sports travel magazine. It's the paul finebaum. Show jason fitz in for paul. And you know. It's funny. Because i genuinely had forgotten so much has happened from the time that we were having real conversations about whether scheduling was such an issue that college football fans were just tuning out. Going to games live because they wanted to see better home games. We were having that conversation and that we go through a year where nobody could even get in. You make such a great point. I wonder if people will flock back. Is there concern from just from the people you've talked to and from looking at the article. Is there concern from just the anxiety that some people feel right now just trying to put themselves back into normal society and whether they'll feel comfortable being in a pack stadium i think that's a real concern for fans and i think that's a real concern for the teams and they have to really make sure that whatever whatever their stadium capacity is they have to make sure that they've got everything straightened up and laid out for as much of a amenable fan experience as possible. They need to make sure that fans feel confident when they go into a stadium. Already you see people starting to come back and smaller numbers and to their credit. Most of these most of these Pro franchises have been doing it in a very slow fashion But you know college football. They're going from an off season where they didn't have anybody to. Hey you're going to be having a hundred percent capacity. So what are they going to be doing when it comes to training their stadium employees to make sure that they are able to answer questions that fans may have when they get to a game and then all of a sudden start to wonder whether or not hey can i go to this area concession. Stand what is it. Like if i need to go to the restroom is there a maximum number of people that is allowed to. I have to stand outside. Do i have to socially distance when waiting to go into the bathroom. All of those small things are gonna have to be addressed by college programs when it comes to having a stands in the stands because they need to have that revenue should be totally blunt. Do these are. These are schools that are facing multimillion dollar deficits and game day revenue is one of the ways that they can start to slowly bill back some of their reserves if things go as and this is worst case scenario but if things go worst case scenario and it turns out that the olympics don't have a happen. Will that have any impact on the way. We are handling sports in america and your mind. I don't think so because japan is such a totally different case. Japan is something where i think i o c has just and this is purely my opinion really just not done a very good job at all when it comes to the messaging about whether or not the olympics will be safe. Their whole message has been essentially. We think it's going to be safe so trust us and we really need the td revenue that comes with the holiday the olympics. And that's not good enough. You have to really be able to allow fans to ask tough questions and be able to answer those questions. And i think you look at most of these proteins especially with baseball because you see more and more stadium's going one hundred percent both. These teams will have very detailed. Faq spots on their website. So a fan before the game has any questions about. I'm not sure about this. Or i'm not sure about that. They can go to those. Faq sites maybe that question gets answered. Maybe it doesn't get answered and they still go to the game anyway. That's where the stadium employees come in. Just a crucial crucial factor. That's where security makes yes to make sure that everybody is following whatever protocols are in that venue and that's where people that's where you get the confidence you get the confidence from having the knowledge that you are gonna be safe because i think that's where people you know kind of stopped going to games and even when there was there was some places in the last ball for college football that even if they were allowed an x. amount of capacity probably didn't so all of their tickets because there were still some people that were very hesitant and that's what the the the The the virus hesitancy becomes being able to overcome that comes with explanations. Obviously but it also comes with knowledge and being able to answer concerns from fans. Because if they don't feel like they're comfortable they were already not going to gains as much as they were before the pandemic and they definitely will not return to the same quality to the same as in the same numbers that they were before man. I really appreciate the time. And your expertise my friend. Thanks so much for joining us and stay safe. Thank you jason you to mattress. You can check out to the article. It's out on sports. "That's what i love. I love paul's audience. Why we love listening to the show. Just love listen. You guys were paul every single day. I'm excited to get to do that with you today and tomorrow now. Obviously one of the things that's on everybody's mind is the travel outlook for this fall. And really what we're talking about. We could be facing as soon as the olympics but all the way in to the fall football season so we're going to get a little expertise on that in the in the form of matt trout. Who joins us from. Sports travel magazine. You could check out a great article. He's got out there on sports magazine dot com talking about the latest sports at cove. Nineteen and really what everybody's trying to do. When it comes to opening stadiums to full capacity and matt. This is an interesting conversation and appreciate your joining the show. Sarah and i on. Spain and fitz have talked a lot about the olympics and some of the challenges. They're facing now is even japan. They're they're not sure that the olympics are safe so as you look at what every single league is trying to do to put forth the effort to put fans in stands. How confident are you at this. Point that we're gonna face what feels like a normal fall. I'm fairly confident. I think An thanks jason. Of course obviously for beyond. But i am fairly confident that we're going to be seen full stadiums In college football pro football all the pro spa sports by the fall. Especially you know you look at major league baseball. And and opening day Obviously the attention on texas rangers having a capacity crowd but everybody did have some restricted level of capacity. And you look at it now. And there's gonna be i think it's close to twenty teams by the fourth of july. That will be having their standing there. Stadium open at one hundred percent capacity. And i think when you go into the fall of the olympics obviously is a totally different animal because of the situation in japan. But i really believe that in this in college football season whether you're watching an sec. Game or pat close game or a group of five game that you're going to be seeing Stands that there might be one or two sections that are socially distanced but for the most part. I think you're gonna see everybody back to what it was. Almost in in in many ways a pre pandemic. Oh set up one of the most interesting things to me that you know. Even last year. I think major league baseball in some ways was sort of a guinea pig. Everybody else so baseball's able to get through the summer with the level of success that so far we're seeing is going to give everybody some encouragement. It does it matter that last year college football essentially said. Hey we'll let every stadium. Make their own decision because that could get more drastic. Is some stadiums decide to be completely full while others decide that they want to be closed. Some capacity that's that's a really good point and that's something where it'll be interesting to see whether or not conferences and especially in college football. We'll take the decision as to whether or not they want schools to be able to do them on a case by case basis or if they wanna have some general guidelines when it comes to Social distance sections vaccinated dissections things of that sort but overall i think the fact that lasts ball. They really didn't do that too much. I mean there are some conferences the big twelve or i'm sorry. The big ten to pack well decided to really close down their stadiums whereas the sec allowed to Schools to set whatever capacity. They felt comfortable with in their location. And i think you're gonna be seeing that again. Just want this wall and it's such a different experience like i'll go back to the nba playoffs. I keep saying this trae young hitting a game. Winning shot against the knicks and the bubble makes headlines for a few seconds trae young shushing spike lee becomes like an iconic thing that we're gonna talk about for years so it's not even just the fans in the stands. I feel like it's sort of changes the way all of us are viewing sports even when we're just watching it on tv. Which adds to a greater heightened sense of normalcy. Think that mentioned the trae young shot. I think sunday was really an was part of the article that i wrote about really the first time in a very long time probably since before the pandemic started that sports felt normal to watch again. Because you saw trae young and in almost sold out garden that was going absolutely beserk. And you see him doing that. And interacting with fans. That's something that sports is missed. Is the interaction between fans and the athletes that are on the field of play with the exception of wednesday night with fans who obviously crossed the line way beyond anything that is suitable in the nba. But then you also on sunday you look at the pga championship. And how fans just stormed and surrounded the eighteenth green for phil mickelson and it was. That's the spontaneity that you get when you see sand at sporting events that you people have missed and even when people have been at college football games over the past year. They were socially distanced. They you know they were very strict protocols in place to avoid that type of instant with the exception of maybe the notre dame field storm against clemson. So i think you're going to be seeing that more and more in the fall. And i think that's what fans are going to be interested in watching and seeing on tv because it just provides a giffen atmosphere. And it'll be interesting. I think in the fall to see whether or not attendance clients for some of these leaks and especially in college football because these are schools that are to need stands to return in large numbers. They were some attendance decreases before the pandemic already because casual fans were starting to not go to gains as much. They decided that sitting on a couch with a big. Tv was cheaper. And i am more you know just a better experience than them. Spending a lot of money to get a bad seat and whether or not. That's the meal that was when the before the pandemic when you were able to still be able to decide at spur of the moment. Hey i want to go to a game. Well the past twelve fourteen sixteen months. We really wouldn't have that ability so that casual fan now in this college football season. Say you know what. I enjoyed watching sports from my couch for the past year. Plus but i really really need to go to the games again and have experienced because college football programs. They they need that. Game day revenue they have to have that game day revenue especially coming out of the pandemic. Your blew my mind actually here in every great way. We're talking to matt. Senior editor.

Sarah paul tomorrow jason clemson last year twenty teams wednesday night today fourth of july olympics Nineteen one pga championship sunday first time this fall two sections one hundred percent phil mickelson
