"A panelist at the sports management worldwide. Nfl Career Conference and he identified you. He was in the crowd. He identified you as someone he wanted. Meet he struck up a conversation. He's built a relationship with you sense. How vital is it to be that personality type? The aggressive fearless talked to anyone type to be successful agent. Now you don't necessarily sound that way and yet you always have this vision of agents as being aggressive and having this fearless attitude. How important do you think that is? We'll talk sports law for many years at the University of Colorado Law School for about twenty years and the very first thing I told people In the classes was that if they wanted to have a career in this industry that they couldn't know too many people and so I encourage them to start meeting people to attend conferences. Like sports lawyers conference that would just add in DC last week or go to the the thing that's act went to in In Indianapolis the worldwide. Sports The combines and you just really You just never know and and I've always pretty much made myself available to young people to give them whatever direction or whatever guidance or counselling I could give them because it's it is a tough industry to break into so you got to be. You got to be very patient you gotta persevere and you've got to you've got a handle some rejection because you're not just gonNA walk out and get the dream job or you know star representing Number one draft choices. It's probably going to take a few years to develop a practice to where you can get where you want to be so I I think I don't know much a matter of being aggressive as it is being persistent and and not getting discouraged to where you're going to be disappointed in quit before you have a chance to allow to develop. Yeah I've always wondered that. Is it even possible? Nowadays for someone to become an agent and work their way up by representing on drafted free agents and seventh rounders. Would you say somebody trying to get into initially is better off trying to sign on? We're one of those bigger firms and kind of learn the industry from the inside out and away. What do you think well I think? Ideally if you can if you could get on with one of the bigger firms that would be ideal There there would be more of a training program. You know opportunity just the way we are with three agents here in one location There they might learn something from us but we wouldn't have The structure you might say are the organization to give them the benefit of the experience that they would get from a bigger firm to where there's more clients to where there's maybe more going on year round for example Some of the bigger firms would probably do marketing in house. And we don't do that So you know to me the ideal thing would be to to to get internship with a big Pharma the Players Association and then use that to roll into your own practice or maybe to get in with a smaller firm because one thing about a smaller firm. They would rather not have to spend time training someone in the business. And I think that's true with the League's and everything for for example attorneys coming into the League into the players. Association are probably coming with quite a bit of experience. They're not coming in right in law school and so to me. It's and you might want to stay with the big firm. It may develop into a long-term opportunity. There's nothing wrong with that because you know it could represent a lot of job security to be with a bigger farm but at least to get started to learn the business experienced sales and resume. Experience is important when you're trying to find a job in this business for sure. So let's just pretend for a second. Let's say you were looking to expand and you were going to try to hire ten new agents if you're hiring a team of new people to work under you. What are the qualities that you would be looking for well Let's put it this way in in in this business. Probably the most important thing you do is recruit new clients. And I don't mean I would say beyond the representation itself I've always felt that if you can attract new clients you can learn new the business but you you could be the most qualified intelligent person and well prepared in the collective bargaining agreement and all the contract information. And if you don't have a client you don't have the opportunity to use that and so I would be looking for people that are ethical debtor honest that are willing to work hard and and ideally people that would be able to bring in new clients and and to me. That is where the people skills are. You might say. The sales ability comes into play. And I and I don't mean doing anything dishonest in the recruiting process but just people that have a way of getting to know people quickly and to get their trust. You know to me. It's it's like I say it's a close relationship. Yeah you want to work with people that you like and that you have something in common with and that you think care about you and so to me to be a good recruiter or good business developer. You need to have those qualities does the same fit for the people that you want to represent like as you've been in this business longer. Are you choosier about who you want to work with? Because you do spend so much time servicing them and working with them do you. Are you pickier at this point in your career or are you willing to just go for the best possible opportunity for Your Business? Well I would say that you know. There's certain there's certain qualities that we look for first of all we. I is a two way street in other words. We want to get people that we liking that people that we can have good conversation with people that will listen to our advice and so you know we. Let's put it this way you'll put it if a guy it's like when teams are keeping players on. That may have been trouble for them. If they're great players you're willing to put up with more than if a player is not a great player and he's and he's very high maintenance guy that's always getting into trouble you know there's just there's a business aspect to our side of it and so there's there's you know we have our we have in our mind the kind of guys we like to work with and normally our guys have turned out to be For example we've had a lot of offensive lineman. Okay I'll translate linemen by nature. Tend to be really nice guys. I'm not saying other guys aren't but they tend to be low maintenance Really guys that you really enjoy and appreciate well do 'cause you also like forgotten appreciate what you do and so to me. It's it's you know they can be any position. It's not a position thing. It's more of a personality thing. I think that you liked to fit. Excuse me and mashed with your clients. Well because you want to enjoy what you're doing as well as provide service. Yeah I read a quote from Bill Belichick recently where I think he said he was talking to. Urban Meyer and said at this point in my career I want to coach players that I like to be around and that just makes so much sense like if you're going to be committed to this all year round as an agent or as a coach or as a whatever you want to be around people you like being around. I mean it just didn't know time for the shenanigans that sometimes go on around certain people you mentioned earlier that you got your law degree from the University of Oklahoma. Do you view that as an essential step to getting to to effectively managing athletes having your law degree or can you be top agent without it. I.

"Know and then though being part of the process to identify recruit and negotiate or the next president trump is trying to leverage analytic. So that was ownership. Having had that background from University of Chicago is a big trader. You alluded to a story and there and I will tell you. I've had a dream list of people I'd like to have on this podcast. And he is one of them and if the closest I ever come to that. Is You actually telling me a story about the teen? I'm with that so please tell us. Tell US Your Theo. Epstein's only normally. You don't tell stories and baseball unless it's not public knowledge so what wasn't expecting that the story would ever surface but the owner did I an ESPN interview and then a Chicago Tribune interview talking about the details of how we selected what was going to be the next. Gm had elevate the president. So we get it I. I was the ownership and helping lead it the analytic aspect of who a candidate. B. We had worked with Jim. Hendry who's the GM prior but he got terminated. And so you know we were looking for search look through dozens of different candidates other GM People who used to be GM but we're no longer people who are assistant GM head of Scouting and player development people from the Commissioner's Office off other people that might get creative but could fill that role perhaps other sports who showed success so we you know we did a full of valuation of both the person but then you know how did they perform in terms of on shield success. How did they do in terms of scouting How did their drafts? And up performing The managers and coaches? They hired player. Were they developing Pires? So you know like a pitching coach wants. The players came to your organization. They generally tend to get better tend to get injured or get worse. So there's so many different factors but we wanted to be very careful of if you don't do well in drafting Is that the result of the the person you're looking for. Could it be that they just you know we're we're thirtieth or you know on the drought watching so that you know you don't. WanNa count out against the drafting abilities. Or if they had tons of compensation pack so you know the first round. They have five players. You know you don't want that to inadvertently make the person look better than they were so you know we. We did all of that and a little bit down to a couple folks and the owner also did a a bunch of calls around to Talk about personality and things of that nature so yeah it was great to be a part of that and then there is also got the public of the Red Sox not traditionally if you You have to ask. Ownership permission to interview with another organization and traditionally or like. The unspoken agreement is for a promotion. You're always just let them go. But in this case the red sox publicly out wanted Players Return so it was interesting that I got involved in evaluating players trying to figure out what players would be in exchange for a office executive. That's Coming up with the story. Yes this is the point where I tell you that I'm a Boston Bob. Bostonian born and raised in a red sox fan and that was a painful time for me. I'm just going to be honest with you so I've learned to get over it though. So yeah that's a really fascinating story about how your role is expanded as you've gone through your career. You mentioned something earlier. It stood out to me. You talked about how you had to be able to the manager. You were speaking with about setting the lineup that he said to you. You're always able to explain things well but I don't necessarily get it. So how big of a part of that of this whole scenario is being able to take complex things and make them easily understood because I would think anybody that wants to work in analytics has to be able to translate and speak to people in a way that they can absorb it? Is that a really important part of this. That the heat one of the most huge parties. Taking actionable information making explainable and making it trustworthy trustworthy means You know you. The data is reliable. You're not misinterpreting things you have. Enough Information Doesn't have to be perfect. In fact no model is completely perfect but some are better than others is one of the things in data science. But you have to trust you have to be able to explain it and then communicate it and found his people other players managers. Gm's thank you either Like like a computer like Ryan dempster player I worked with. You could just data or spreadsheet and he could just look at it interpreted it and South Brady Anderson. Another person who just look at tons of data gets it other players. You need to be visual so like a heat. Map like an image for batter of where this pitchers most likely to to throw where pitcher to have a heat map of a batter very visual in their mind as their pitching looking at like a red target or green target target and then other players are more like auditory. They need an English sentence. Like use swung eighty-seven sliders below zone this year. And you got Niro hit. Don't do that and then others like a little more attention deficit You know the champ think more. They can't think either anything or maybe there's only one or two nuggets of information when you come to the plate Kirk Gibson. They can't like thinking numbers so they like the explanation. How you communicate is also part of Understanding two people you're talking to. And what what form you're communicating visual auditory raw data with them. That's fascinating so you teach this you teach baseball analytics and data science and analytics with our friends at sports management worldwide via an eight week online. Course this is. Intense stuff is a lot to it. What's your approach to teaching this highly in demand skill set right so wh- ww sports management worldwide organization. That does online everything from CIA weekly chats with myself on where they get to ask I make it interactive any question that they want but I put it in perspective of somebody. Who's in the industry who have transparent of I can't be get a sense of what it's actually like. And then the actual tangible skill sets like programming languages like Python data science like our data robot which is not machine learning deep learning automation tool to Visualization things of that nature. A lot more going on in the class but even the nice thing is. These skills are highly in demand even during the pandemic You know machine learning analytics data science. Is You know of the sculpture. That's one of the more agile. One that companies across every industry are looking for. So you know the fallback. If you don't make a career in baseball you know the the payout and job opportunity is really strong. I think glass door. "Well we so of course it support sales and marketing. And and you want to do that. We try to initially we start by giving them common an overview of what it's like to work For for a team or an org or sports organization because a lot of times people don't know that they they think am and worked for the NFL or the NBA and and they don't really know a lot about minor league sports. They don't know a lot about college. Athletics we don't know a lot about you know working with with organizations like You know the US women's national soccer team or the you know Luckily Development Committee or whatever might be so there's so many different opportunities out there other than just working with you. And I WANNA four or five Major League sports team so stop there and then once once we kind of drill down a little deeper that we kind of get into the inside the out of different departments within sports and we talk about the marketing side and the sponsorship sales side and in the ticket selling side. We'll try to give them a good understanding of what those opportunities are when as opportunities typically become available but then go even deeper really started drilling down so ticket sales example. We we talk about what what day to day You know routine looks like for someone selling tickets. Whether it's at the Miley Global. The professional level took me about the same in terms of entry level positions. And we talk about you know what it takes to to make some phone calls a day and it has some tough conversations to be rejected over and over but yet to be resilient at to continue to make the next call in the next call in the next call. Tell you finally get to sale but we also talk about what it's like when you do get to say on and how that feels and how that keeps you motivated in going so we kind of drill down the different layers each week and until we get a really good idea of what it's like to work in wars. I think that's really helped a lot of people out do you. Would you say you have a pretty good track record or people taking the course in finding careers in the industry that find out that they liked working in sales? Are you able to help get them into roles? Can we do that so we we've we've we've typically some people are asking people skirmishes after taking our course? I will tell you this and one thing we tell everybody that the first week is that you got patient with this process. Because I don't want people think you can take an online course and you're going to send out a resume and you're gonNA get a job you know week later. You know how difficult it is to get a job in the sports and that's one of the things that we really preaches it. It's GonNa be a process and you're going to have to have to go about it. The Right Way. And we give them some tools that do that everything from talk about informational interviews and developing a network of People. That can help you in your journey and and how to get people connected within the industry so we go rely stuff so people have to follow the process that they can expect to. You know we. We can't teach them everything they need to know. An eight weeks But we can give them a really good idea On some things that they can do to increase your chances of getting a position scores after. That of course is fantastic. Greg. I can't thank you enough. We'RE GONNA finish up with this. You've worked with many sales people over your career. And you've taught many salespeople what would you say if you had to identify one thing that separates the successful from the unsuccessful in sports sales? What does that one thing that pattern that you've recognized or identified that really stands out in those who find success cloud just one. You can go for more whatever rules here. You mentioned being passionate about it to me. That's huge But I also think resiliency is maybe the next biggest when we can talk about being good listeners and communicators and all that all that goes into but being passionate and being resilient because you know so you know fails. I is is a really tough thing to hear. No as much as we hear it in sales and you can be the best sales person in the world and he might close. You know one out of every ten or one very twenty calls that you make so think about being rejected nineteen twenty times before you finally hear yes and if you don't have the rights Personality the right attitude In the self motivation to overcome that I it wears you down and and You know I've seen it with young sales people and I've seen him with experienced people. Sometimes people just lose their resiliency and and That after that they start to lose your passion and next thing you know they're just not having any fun at it and when something else so I think it's a challenge said to be in the grind for that long into Europe Europe's year But I will say that the upside of that is that when you make that sale and and you're hitting your sales goals and you're making your own numbers and you see the impact. It's having conscious within the department but for the whole organization There's something about selling Professional sports or Minor League sports. Or whatever you're selling That you can't get selling anything else and I think you know Most teams treat their Sales departments almost like like a team. You you know I love the competition. You encourage competition among your sales reps but but at the same time you celebrate successes right. Every sale is satisfied and and You celebrate that every time you make a sale and You know a lot of Wadham sales contest and just a lot of fun. A lot of high energy so there are definitely many more positives to working in sports and there are negatives but I do think that resiliency and passion are the two things that you have to have and and you need those overcome the challenges working in sports. I think it should be clear to everybody listening. That now is a time to improve yourself and a great way to do that. "Totally agree. I remember like you do. I remember that the nine eleven as well and and I believe I think it was. I think I think we suspended game. Sure that for a week and then we started a couple of weeks after and I just remember the first game back First thing I should say that were played that year. The energy of the students was just incredible and in the end. The teams really tied in Tributes end of music that we played in and just the at halftime presentations. Everything was about rolling the country together and I think sports was a catalyst for that. And I think you're gonNA see the same thing Again this year. I think sports will be that uniting force that will bring us all together and people will return to the game just like the day after nine eleven and again they're going to need some assurances because this is a little bit different this is this is more about You know spreading a virus and something that certainly is a is a little more likely than maybe a terrorist attack ETA stadium but I THINK SPRANG. A virus is much easier to do. Obviously so I think we need those assurances that once in place I I really think this is. This is going to be a great a great year for sports. Yeah it is just so crazy to comprehend this. I keep thinking again nine. Eleven after nine eleven. I'm trying to think very tactically like what happened. I'm trying to remind myself like what did we do? After that and I just remember security changed and the processing of fans coming to the stadiums change and there were a lot of adjustments. We all had to make a sports fan base. Do you think that there will be an approach like that? Two teams have to have a burden to help ease concerns and make it worthwhile for fans to attend the game in person. Is there things you need to do? As far as you know hand sanitizing processes or whatever I don't I don't know what it is but do you think that there is a burden on the teams to be spending their time right now figuring that out do I think there'll be some some guidelines probably from the CDC that they will learn than us. I understand the best way to kind of sanitizer. Been using your right hand. Sanitizing stations and making sure that you sanitize as much the billing you can. I mean it's practically impossible you know particularly like an NFL stadium. You've got sixty or seventy thousand seats to completely Sanitize every single seat or building the past the disaster large. But I think you can do things to make people feel better about you know. Can you two games and and they're going to be semesters I'm sure in place and and people will probably be a little more conscious about you know touching doors and You know testing their seats in washing their hands when they're exiting restrooms and things like that. So someone's going to bomb the fans to live new got to be socially responsible as well so. I think it's GonNa be a shared You know Should go through the Queen's in the fan to make sure that we're keeping each other safe prior to joining the Colts Twenty eight years ago you worked for the Indianapolis Ice of the International Hockey League. I did yeah and I think a lot right now to about this. Smaller Leagues Emerging Sports the Independently Minor Leagues. I think the NBA NHL The MLS. These leagues will rebound they. Can they handle this? Fans will come crashing back but I wonder about these leagues that have smaller margins. Lower success rates is. Do you think they're going to be able to rebound from this loss guys? I think it's certainly going to be much more difficult for them to survive You know they they don't have the The national or even the local television radio revenues coming in to kind of help them quickly catch backup. They don't really have the deep reserves like their parents. Karen clubs do I think the teams that are account that AAA level. Like major In Aaa Baseball or the American hockey league the do have some financial support from from the parent clubs in terms of like player salaries I think those teams will be. Okay I think I think he started down to SINGLE-A AA You know the the the teams like that and some of the minor league soccer organizations. I think those little and and you know just not having a deep reserve not having a way to generate revenue right now They're going to be a lot of hardships. And you can see more employees Being loaded in those types of organizations And and the fans will out sustained You know Not having revenue coming in for potentially you know four or five or six months so that that's going to be something that will have to keep an eye on but is definitely going to be a lot harder for all those teams to their their ticket. Prices are lower and and You know a lot of major league. Baseball teams are using Minor League Baseball Teams in Hockey Teams. They rely on discounting to get people into the parks arenas and and they make their money on concessions and parking and things like that too. So you know. It's not his ticket revenue or sponsorship revenue. But it's all the concession parking revenue generating right now so it's definitely going to be real hardship for those teams. That's a really good point so I've been being asked all week and I. I'm sure you are as well. But people are asking me who have been laid off or lost their job completely or they've been furloughed. They're asking what they should do now. And I'm of the belief and I've been pushing people a lot that revenue creating sales jobs will be even higher demand than normal coming out of this and that people should get sales trained. What do you think is that good advice on percents? Yeah totally agree. I think I know that we just we just hired At our place a new season ticket sales and a new group sales rep so I think teams like teams. I know are are looking to add staff right now because I know there are some people that are are like Oh from infants is temporarily from from us from teams and and they don't want sit around and wait and so the NFL is is A really good sales people right now from some of the other leagues so I. I think there's definitely going to opportunities for that. But also like you mentioned and we talking about is that you know the number one priority for these teams revenue generation once once. They're leagues announced when they're going to start playing again so You know ticket. Sales in particular is always going to be the the number one You know revenue generator for for any professional sports teams so I would say ticket sales Definitely Be An area where you're going to see a lot of openings and a lot of teams are going to start adding stamps. I winsor seasons are are back up and running bouncing people can use this time to To kind of make themselves better and and you know a lot of times. We get so busy with what we're doing at work in our personal lives that we don't really have time to listen to podcasts. Or sales training or to read books about sales or I think at this point if you do have some time and you're in between jobs right now that'd be great opportunity for you to really make sure that you're staying. Scharping you learning some things. That maybe he didn't have time to tomorrow. White. You know why you were kind of in the everyday grind of selling So so take some time right now and make yourself better and stay sharp. And some of those opportunities do com race step in right away and start generating revenue. That's a perfect segue my next question. You're clearly a pro at this. You teach you teach an online class in sports sales and marketing with our friends at sports management worldwide. So I I asked you. Can anyone be taught sales or does it take a special personality? Well it's a little bit about. I mean anyone can be taught. I mean you definitely have to have the right personality and there are some you know Underlying personality traits and you know our precautions and things like that that factor into it but anyone can fail. I think you know I guess one thing I'll say is that You've got to kind of have a passion for not kind of you have to have a passion for it or you're not really going to be success. I think one of my biggest pet peeves at taught students particularly universities or or some of our interns. And I say well you know what what do you want to do in sports or I want to work in sports. What do you WANNA do? I I do anything really. He eats worked in the mail room. Where you work with the maintenance team or would you really do anything which answer phones at the Front Desk? I think that answered me drives me nuts. Because they're just housing that they haven't really thought through what they WANNA do. The handle I've thought about whether passion lies and and I I think one of the things people see sports as a way to kind of excuse me sales as a way to kind of get their foot in the door which is great because we talked about. They're probably more Opportunities available in ticket sales are in sales in general than any other department sports Go in there that attitude that well I really wanted to work in media relations but I'm I'll take his entry level sales job so I'll be doing pr for the team. It doesn't work that way. I can do to sail. You're not passionate about there. Won't be a year later off so I think the one thing that we talked to people about is that If you're GONNA do this you have to really go all in Can't go into this thinking this is. I'll try it for a year. I think it's great try And I think you learn either you are. You aren't right Pretty quickly but you have to go into it in saying. I'm going to go all in do everything I can do. I'm going to. I'm going to take everything in and not being taught and sales training apply down but ask questions and let it find it tore. You know I'm going to be a leader on my team. GonNa come in early Wednesday late. I'M GONNA make all my calls some. You can go to all those things you need to do to be successful And if you do you ha- you give yourself a good opportunity. And and some people do all the right things they find out that it's not a career for them but the people that do the right things and and they they do into a career in a passionate about those the ones that are most successful so I just try to tell people that. Look if you got to do this you gotta be committed to it because sales not something can come in and just kind of do halfway and and not really put everything you got into it. If you do that. You're you're not going to give yourself a chance at all. You've been teaching the course. It sports management worldwide for a long time and anybody that's interested in signing up for Greg scored. Pretty clearly the first Friday episode special episode was an interview with Ken Shropshire. Ceo of the Global Sports Institute. He had really deep insight into what this pandemic will mean for the sports industry. Moving forward really great stuff. I suggest you go back and listen to it. If you haven't and last Friday we discussed ways to maximize your networking efforts during this time. Lotta people are at home right now. A lot of people that you may want to connect with and have an insightful conversation with an Aso questions about their career and now's a good time to do it. We gave some strategies in that regard to good time to do it. Because time is you know like I said available and today I have another special guest Gregg Hilton. Vp of premium. Seating for the Indianapolis Colts couple major reasons. I wanted to have greg on number one the. Nfl season is still in play. Which makes Greg's story and living and his reality currently really interesting and he can give us a little bit of an insight into how the NFL is handling things and how he's handling it from a sales approach looking to the future number two he can also dig into what's going on inside the teams and leagues. That aren't playing right now. And what their strategies may be moving forward when we get back to work and number three. I believe personally that revenue generating roles like sales will be in high demand once normalcy returns and that all of us should consider strongly taking sales training courses right now and guess what. Hey Greg how are you doing today? I'm doing great. I appreciate having you on. We're in really unique times right now as you and I were talking before we got started so often I try to make these episodes not directly connected to something happening right now because I want them to last. I want them to be able to information. Somebody can listen to way into the future but right now this is what's important so I want to have a conversation about some of these topics we're dealing with right now. That worked for you. Look for me. I think This is such an unprecedented time for all of us and certainly the sports industry as not been immune to it either so it definitely topical right now. Yes so okay. Let's break this down a little bit Wednesday march eleventh the NBA suspends their season. And since that time most other leagues are following suit. They're doing the same kind of thing we can't list them all take too long but you're lead the NFL. You haven't had that pressure yet to suspend the season. We're not there where you guys have plenty of time. You have runway to worry about that so explain. What is the last two to three weeks? Been like for you personally and professionally probably like everybody ready to spend challenging To try to balance your your work responsibilities and your social responsibilities and You know it's certainly been adjustment to work from home like it'd probably has for everybody and some UK with people remotely I'm a big routine guy so for me. I like to get up in the morning and do my exercise and and you get into the office and socialize with people and interact the staff and so you know for me being taken now that routine You know after thirty years maybe a little bit different than someone. That's been the industry for a couple of years but it's still you're disrupting the routine of a lot of people right now and so we have to find wastage all work remotely and and. Sobe effective better jobs. And I think you know that that's how it's affected as you know professionally and certainly personally affected everybody to write with with the economy and the situation that that We're all in right now financially and and I think with you know people that have kids in school or kids in college and you know you try to work from home and now your kids are home. And I'm fortunate that my kids are older. Now have maybe the same distraction as people with younger kids. But you know it's affected us in a different lab at my oldest daughter is a senior in college and half. Her senior year disrupted by this. And you know her. Commencement already been been canceled and stuff. So yeah it's just the way in fact that everybody is really It's been a little bit Sam by also it's been it's been really in a weird way. Been been great to see how people have adapted to that and and how resilient people have become an and and how. We're finding ways to do things that we never thought we could do before. And we're interacting differently now that we're still being Effective in and what we need to do to get ourselves on every single day for for what What I do at work. I couldn't agree with you more and I think it's interesting and somewhat funny in these times like I'm listening to podcast that I normally listen to or productions I normally listen to and since everybody's working from home rather than in the studio you hear more like dogs barking in the background or kids to you in pots or whatever and you have to just kind of rolled it like everybody's like lessening the professionalism and just kind of going at it and I think that's great. You mentioned something interesting there as far as routine. I imagined so many people are used to routine but there's also season -ality this time of year. I'd imagine free agency draft coming up. This is usually an exciting time for you. You probably have a routine of leveraging the fact you disturbed signed Philip rivers to the colts and the big news and you can go out and talk about it but has your approach to sales and you're kind of long term projections or even just a season. Has that changed a lot for you. This off season create and cheap Is definitely different right now. I think you know if it typically big news every single season right but this year probably more so than ever just because it's really the only sport has something happening right now. That people can talk about or debate about our progress. Kate out and you know the the Philly mentioned the pillow signing You know that's something absurdly at that We have gotten behind organization in promoting that to our fans. But personally it hasn't really moved the needle that much in terms of sales and not because people aren't excited about it But just given the time that we have right now. It's a little difficult for people. I depart with their disposable income than it was in the past and I still think the moves were making your free agency You know eventually will help our sales and as things continue to improve but you know in the short term we really haven't advantage of that Like maybe we would have in years past and But but I am. You know I'm I'm really Happy for the fans right now. That with the Free Agency was allowed to go on to anticipate on schedule. I do think that the people are just creaming. You know some something from sports in something to kind of distract them from everything else going on right now so well. We're not playing games or there aren't games being played right now. This is something for people to talk about and and You know If nothing else help keep their interest in sports for the time being. It's true I love to relive my glory eras of the eighties nineties and early two thousands. But I'm a little bit tired of the repeats. I'm ready for some actual fresh news. You know what I mean So we all talk about the revenue disruption. That's happened in sports across all leagues and why that might be a little bit for the NFL as of yet put yourself in the shoes of the VP of premium. Seating for the Pacers or the Cleveland Indians dealing with a completely different situation. What would you imagine? Their situation is like right now. I think it's really tough and I feel for those guys right. Now I feel for the teams feel their staffs. This situation is totally different than than ours right. Now obviously You mentioned yeah. They've they've already missed gains most of those you know with the NBA Nhl. Most of those. Which likely won't They won't be able to reschedule. Which means they'll have to forfeit the revenue from ticket sales sweet sale or sponsorships or local television local radio. So the the. There's a lot of revenue tied to each game each match that has missed and and and really In addition to that they really can't continue to generate new revenue because they don't have a schedule or a really a season to right now So that makes it even more challenging so it puts them in a really tough spot. I think I've seen some teams that actually started career laying off employees or cutting back salaries which you know God Excruciating Decision For Management and ownership at to do that And it certainly creates additional herships for the staff so for the NFL You know at least for the time. Being generated revenue Because at least at this time nothing has changed in terms of US playing a full season schedule in twenty twenty but now everything's fluid but it doesn't mean a month or two now things will be you know won't be different and and our special will be adjusted to so it's really tough for the teams in the middle of season right now or especially with Major League baseball getting ready to start a season There's so much uncertainty right now. That from looking at this strictly from internally from from the sales perspective that there's really not a whole lot you can do other than You know sit tight and wait for things to change a little bit but yeah. They're they're in a really bad spot right now and it's you know the NFL being Being a false board. We certainly had that advantage right now. But if it's tough and I think They're doing the best they can with With making decisions that are in the best interest of the players and the fans And and I was really happy to see the NBA take lead in that. And and the League's jumping so quickly and make the same decisions great now. It's you know at some point it can't be just about revenues. GotTa be about keeping everybody say an and I'm glad that that sports really kind of took the lead in that across the country In really took a stand on that and then it seems like everything else is kind of Followed behind sports You know with states closing down and and officers closing down but I was really proud of scores for taking that lead. Totally agree wonder too when we get back to support when we get back to normal. Do you think that leagues and teams? That have had to miss some time and therefore lost revenue. Do you think they'll try to make that up? I mean do you think they would raise ticket prices or change concessions or did they just take that as a loss and say listen? There's no way we can make that up. Let's just embrace the fans and get back to business. What do you think we'll be their strategy or approach? It's going to be a little different with every team. I right now. Fans are just absolutely craving sports. Right now and Ryan so I don't think I'd be too quick to to start dropping ticket prices or start raising ticket prices or making your too many concessions until I really understood the impact of what this season and missed out on the fans. I think people will be ready to use. Sports is kind of a social gathering rally Forget about the things that are going on or things that happened And and I think that sports can really be the bigger to kind of pull the country back on his feet and and get people to be something people something to be excited about again. I think again this one opinion right but I think you almost have to take a wait and see approach for the first month or so each season and see how the fans are going to react. I think initially You know everyone is following the lead of the CDC and they're going to have to really Make people feel comfortable again about getting out and attending events in being large social gathering? So we're GONNA need assurance I right from the CDC. But I think once that happens and once people feel that that it is safe to go back out again and and to be a part of these large social experiences like going to a game I think they're gonNA COME OUT IN DROVES. I really do. I think people have mixed it. I think it's I forget how much scored springs are together And we're in right now. There's really nothing to bring the community together so I think when when scores starts up again I would expect people to come out in droves and I would expect teams to have successful seasons. I agree the the only historical precedent I've been able to give it from. My lifetime is nine eleven and I was in the sports media time I was. I was covering sports national sports and I remember that time and when it was happening and a lot of us sat around thinking. Oh my gosh nothing will ever be the same. We're no fans are not gonNA come to the Games. Nobody feel safe. Everybody's GONNA BE. Games are going to be suspended terrorist threats Blah Blah Blah. But it we got back to reality. We got back to normal and actually sports helped heal in so many different ways and so. I keep looking at that and saying there's going to be. This appetite is really strong. Advocate like you said for almost like a social gathering place of of sports to help reunite that..
"To continue to play You know th the game at the major league level is is terrifically entertaining. But I'm sure there's Some things that we can do to you know You know catch people's attention I always looked at baseball. A family outing and have it as many things to entertain the entire family around the ballpark and at the Ballpark Has always been a staple of having a good organization so you know as many things as baseball can have that. Are you know that fans can participate in as part of that over over all experience like seeing seeing the veteran players played in the organization Learning some of the skills that the players are doing on the field around the ballpark. I'd I'd like to see a little bit more than than processing young players as they come into baseball. Not Not not just Baseball players but also saw players. I think that Mlb Good Do do a better job would. I can't thank you enough for coming on the show and sharing so much extra petits. We'll finish up with this because I know you're a busy guy. You have a lot to get back to if you were going back today. You're starting college all again with the dream of working in baseball. What would your strategy be? Well I I would I would probably try to get an internship while I was going through college with a A team operation to see if I liked it and You know I live on the Cape Cod and Cape Cod for the baseball players that come here the preeminent summer college league but it's really a summer college internship for the players that are considering the go into pro so i. If I was in college I try to get with one of those preeminent Summer College Leagues New England Clinton. Baseball is a good one. The Cape Cod League is a good one. The North Woods League is another good one and see if I liked it. And then you know baseball's the kind of thing that you're GonNa have spent a Lotta hours at the ballpark. You might as well find out if it's for you while you're in college and if you have a real passion for it you know you'll meet a lot of people that are passionate about it like you and you'll find out you know. This is something you want to commit to if if on the other hand. If it's not for you you'll find that out to So I think that's probably the best advice I can offer common today for sure and taking your player development course of course but I want to. Is there any specific skill? Like they You Focus in on to possibly developing. Is there a certain trend that you've seen in your in your most recent years in baseball? That is developing aspect of the game. That may be set. Somebody UP FOR SUCCESS. I would say Your ability to communicate effectively speak clearly to write clearly and then also ability to listen. You know would be key skills that you could develop now that will serve you well in the future. I love Dan. That's great stuff. I have to admit Growing up in Boston and being a huge red sox fan Dan Duquette was someone that I really watched and studied and try to understand his decision making and how he handled himself with the media and how he chose players and you know built the entire team and organization so it was a real thrill for me to get a chance to to speak with him and learn from him and I love his perspective on so many things. I would like to repeat to everybody. One thing that he said that I want you all to remember and I'm not a big quote guy as you all know. But when he said this I perked up he said you can't be an expert without making a lot of mistakes so that goes to making choices and doing things and being active. You'RE NOT GONNA make mistakes if you're not out there being curious and trying to do better and trying things and you will make mistakes. We all will but don't let that hold you back. Don't let that be the end of the story. That's on a period. Making a mistake is a learning process. And you only make mistakes. If you're trying things so to become an expert to really get to that high level you gotta be trying things. You gotta be curious. You gotta be learning through your mistakes and that's when you get to a point where you really refined yourself to this point of expertise and that was something that really resonated with me so I wanNA make sure I reiterated it today. "To run a budget there but budget nickname was budget. Bud and and you know He. He was a stickler he'd Grind. You up on your Your submissions for the budget. But he you know he he knew how to get the most out of budget and how to get the most efficient use of the dollars put together a winning team so I was grateful for the training. Harry gave me lose great baseball. People into bucks'll you tell me how to run a how to run a budget and get the most of you have an incredible. I for baseball talent. There's no denying that we could go on for the next. Twenty minutes listing the players. You've identified drafted signed and developed over your career. I just wonder. Do you ever look back and say wow. That was that was really impressive whether it was able to do or I'm really proud of this moment. Is it always just looking forward onto the next moment? Well I you know everybody has You know certain gifts that they have your certain talents You know they can bring to bear in the marketplace. I I just. I just happen to know who the best players were and I think I learned that you know playing ball in the backyard. Picking up teams But I mean I just always know who the best athletes were. The best players were. I don't know if it was intuitively or You know my father was in personnel. He was the superintendent of schools in the hired all the teachers and he used to tell me what trait look for to hire the best teachers and I I just I just had had a knack for it. It wasn't it wasn't Something it was something that came easy to me and then of course. We're training the Dalton Gang. You know they gave me all the technical indicators to look for a and you know that's been able to make a living. Fortunately what trait? Now you have your I have to ask what traits did your father look for. What did he tell you that he looked for when hiring staff? My father look for teachers one that that felt that it was there. You know Calling in life to teach other people in the pass on their their knowledge. And you know if you asked my father. What was the most fulfilling part of his career? He would talk about. He started out as a reading teacher. He would talk about how he taught an eighth grader. To read the previous to that grade. Didn't have Reading skills You know so. So that's I mean my my my dad like making a connection with people and helping them Develop skills and you know. He looked for people. Those those same kind of grace that had an enthusiasm you know But an even keel disposition very passionate about helping other people to education so a love for the game which makes a lot of sense as a scout. I imagine it as an executive when you're making decisions I imagine you really have to trust what you see and you have to have great confidence in how a player will project or how a decision will look in the future. How did you learn to really trust yourself? Because so many young people that I speak with have trouble trusting what they see or what they believe or even having faith and their own opinions. How did you kind of learn that skill that confidence you know? They say you can't be an expert until you make a lot of mistakes true and through a trial and error over the years I I learned what skills played at what position When it came to Major League baseball players And and You know I I I think you just have to trust what you see and then Put that against Wh- what skills you know are required By the job. Like if you take a look at go ballot. Check one of the great coaches of all time in the NFL. He has a profile threes per possession of all the skills that he likes to see those position Based on size you know based on speed based on toughness and everybody in that organization knows Type of players that he's looking for to fill each of those positions and the skill set So you know I I. I think that if the organization does a good job they tell you what to look for they show you what it is that they're looking for and then they give you a chance to go out there and do it There's a lot of video assets. Of course where you can teach the scouts exactly what you're looking for But in terms of you know gaining confidence in my judgment you know that that that that took a lot of mistakes That took a lot of time and you know fortunately people had patients would meal way for sure so as fans. We first get introduced to a player at the draft. I mean most of us aren't following high school sports or watching the college tournament scene or anything like that. We see a player to draft. And we get excited about it right. And then there's this multi year gap where we just don't really see that much of them. Maybe be here report from the minors or you know. This guy's doing great or whatever it may be but we don't really think about too much until they make it to the way all the way to the majors but within the organization this period of time from acquisition until actually making it to the majors at development phase is hugely important. What would you say are the key components as you see it in this player development phase? Well yeah that's good. I'm going to chance to talk about development because that's that's what we're GONNA be talking about on this Of course we're doing for SM WW sports management worldwide. I mean you know player. Development is really Developing the skills those Player needs to be successful. Major League player and that is developing the skill the physical skills of course that they they needed their position and then Teaching them how to practice properly so that they developed the habits along the way that will help them be successful and their jobs. And so if I were to say what is good clarence developments having a good educational plan for each player and having a baseline when they start in the organization and that would come from the original scouting report any tests that you'd give them prior to hiring them and them starting out on their major league career and then Juxtaposed those skills against the skills that you need to compete at the major league level. You know what are this players Strengths you know how. How can you help you win? A game And then a capitalizing on those and coming up with the program to not only enhance those but to help him Address whatever limitations. He has the might hold them back from from getting to the big leagues and being a competitive player for the club. As you mentioned. You're launching a new online class along with our friends at sports management worldwide. And you're teaching very concept of player development. It's a really big subject. So how do you? It's an eight week online. Course what are some of the main points you're going to focus on? How are you GonNa really educate this audience of people that will will be hanging on your every word to learn what it's like being player development from the executive side? What are you gonNa Focus in on? Well I'M GONNA I'm GonNa rely on some of the Great Baseball minds to give the students. They Broad based understanding about what player development is so we're gonNA read Tall Richard earns the great oriole manager. We're GonNa read his modern baseball strategy. And we're going to focus on how Paul Richards. Played percentage baseball as early as the fifties With the Orioles. And what kind of development program he had in place that that are really tried and true throughout Major League Baseball. And then we're also going to focus on another great executive probably the preeminent executive a history of baseball branch rickey. We're GONNA read his Little Blue Book and you'll see how branch rickey was a visionary for his time He started up the player development system. If you will through across baseball we're going to take a historic look at through a lot of branches quotes and they'll give us a good foundation and we're GONNA take that to The pitching side. I mean you can have a whole seminar on pitching. Yeah for sure you can do fishing. Pitching pigeon pitching So we're GONNA take a look at a critical look at how to be a successful Major League pitch. And then we're GONNA look at some of the other things that you have to do and player development to have a good mindset We're GONNA read Tom. Hanson's play big Mental psychological approach to develop in the right mindset to succeed so students will get a good foundation in Not only dried intrude ways of major league baseball But also to understand how to measure the skills required to identify major leaguers and how clubs today are are continuing to enhance their development operation through the use of technology. Do you feel confident. This online course will help people who are aspiring to work in baseball they will help set them towards a path on the on the right path towards getting that job. Well also you know. We use a lot of this material when I was in three organizations We particularly built a baseline of material from a terrific player development operation probably the best player development operation. I've ever been around and that was with the expos and then when I went to the oil when when I went to the Red Sox we had to build up our plate about operation so a lot of the successful people that came through the Red Sox organization got a good. Got a good bit of this type of Hub Training there and then we turned the red sox around and built a per straight organization. Then enough WanNa know more will series and then when I went to the Orioles and Two thousand twelve a lot of the staff people there particularly on the player development side enjoyed A lot of the same material while the managers coaches there You know to give them a foundation and understand exactly what I was looking for and good player on itself. This material is trained a lot of professional people and help them in their job. And I'm sure we'll give good foundation. Anybody that's interested in in Player development across the number of professional sports by giving them the basic concepts and understanding about. It does sound really fascinating Dan. I wondered I it just hearing the way you talk about player development. And how you you really respect what was happening with the Expos and you've seen it work with the red sox and the Orioles was this one of your favorite parts of being a GM was development phase of after acquisition getting the player to reach their full potential. Yeah you know what I left the act When I left the brewers in nineteen eighty seven. I had my last two years. I was a scouting director. There and Mister Donovan always told me that. The player Development Director of Alvin Java. The farm director was the job where he had the most fun over the course of his career and he he always told me it was good training in regard to assembling a major league club. Because not only. Did you have the teams together? But you had to come up with individual educational plans for all the players and then help them develop the skills they needed to progress throughout the system. And get to the big league So when I got the Montreal I went there as the director of player development and You Know I. It's a job that in your once. You're in it. It takes a lot of times because you've got to oversee You know six or seven teams and a number of people so all your All your communication skills have to work. You're going to have an efficient operation. People have have to know what their job is. What's expected by them And then of course you have to come up with a system to hold them accountable. But it's it's a it's a terrific. It's a terrific job. It's a job that I had the most fun. And and you know we were fortunate to have some great great players with the Expos Larry Walker just going into the hall of fame. Marcus grissom noises. Alot trek reader runaway. Kurt Kurt reader reader came up. He was he was a top starter for a long time. Gary Used Scott. Scotty director was telling me that they got like sixty players. Come to the pharmacist. When we got to the big league so like a five year period so it was like you know about eleven or twelve per year. There were coming to that farm system. I mean just unbelievable and productive system But it was great. I loved it and I'm sure we'll get a lot of people with a passion for player development. It'll get a lot out of this course for sure you've been the of many famous transactions as growing up. Red Sox fan myself training for Pedro Martinez Signing Manny Ramirez two huge contract trading for Derek Lowe and Jason Varitek. There's probably fifty more. I could list from just your days with the Red Sox. I'm curious about your mentality. Though as you approach any deal I mean. These are huge transactions. There's massive onto money on the line. There's future of the organization. Are you resolute in these decisions? Knowing it's the right move or do you allow for any doubt or fears inhibitions like I look at this and think I probably wouldn't sleep for weeks as I lead up to a decision like this and yet you seemed able to pull him off really easily. How well what's your mentality? Well you know I think You know the system that That Harry Potter Saul as executives was to put a specific value on Each possession and to.
"It puts you in a really good position of strength within the organization. You start to get known and talked about it and you you know achieving all of your goals and being someone who is an overachiever and everything like that is way. More powerful than standing on the outside waiting for that opening for an entry level job in the community relations or marketing rule. If you're sitting at your house waiting for that job that opened up with your ideal organization. Well who do you think's if somebody already in the building like let's just play this out. You don't take this job. You sit at home. You're looking for other jobs or whatever and somebody else took the job. And they're in their proven themselves every day they're in. They're showing up on time and working hard and networking and all these other things. We're GONNA talk about and you're not and then the job for a marketing coordinator opens up or a community. Relations associated. Comes up well. Who Do you think's going to have a better opportunity? That person already on the inside making inroads proven themselves or you who they've never met or seen or heard from before the other person does the has the job very simple but right get in there and make your serve first impression. It's really important number two. I want you to understand the philosophy of of of managers. Promotions and opportunities often come from within K. So if I when I was in charge of hiring at Fox sports northwest I would try to when I had a positions open up. I about half the time. Try to promote from within a half time. Get somebody from the outside now. Why is that relevant? Well if half the time I'm trying to hire somebody from within. Why am I doing that? Well because I want to send a message to the entire staff that if you work hard and you achieve you will get an opportunity to grow right. You'll get an opportunity to grow and take on new challenges and promote and grow your career. Here you can stay here and be here. That's how you retain staff that's how you retain your good people you give them promotions. You build them up from within. So if you're in the building and you're working and you got a chance to really show that show your stuff off when an opportunity comes up you're in first position you are going to be acknowledged recognized. And they're gonNA know you're a proven commodity so you will have a first line opportunity to be promoted from within. It's much easier to get a job from within. It is to be coming in from the outside. If you're coming in from the outside so that fifty percent people that hide from the Outside. Well you're competing with one hundred other people at through in their applications. If I'm promoting from within it might be. I don't know one two three people who might be viable for this role. Who Look who would be good people to promote you. Put yourself in that position. Your odds just got a lot better. If you're one of those top people that are viable for a promotion. Your your your position has got a lot stronger number three when you get this job. And when you're in the building network within the building network with the other departments get to know all these people in a social in a professional manner. That's a huge advantage. Caso your goal then is to do your job. I be very focused on what you're in. Your role is but get to know people in the community relations department. Maybe volunteer on a weekend. Maybe offered you know. Do a little extra with them. Maybe you know what do all these opportunities but I know the people to understand what their role is like. It's smarter about it. You can really learn how this organization operates and what their their philosophy is on community relations. And what their philosophies on marketing and how the different departments breakdown in response to WHO and who reports to WHO. It's GonNa make much smarter when that. Opportunity does arrive. You're going to know the people who are in decision making roles you're going to have a relationship with them in some degree. You really going to understand the department so you're getting kick start on all your research because you know how it works better than anybody coming from the outside right so as you network and research and understand the rule. You're getting stronger. You're getting much stronger number four. Do Your Job I. So let's say I think I saw follow but it said that this role would be in sales and you really want to be in community. Communications or marketing. So you're going to have assignments for your your two things you're expected to do. As far part of the sales department do all those first one hundred percent focused really be on top of that Your your job. I is to do it right that first thing but then go extra right do your job make yourself available to all these people. You're not working with volunteer. Offer to do weekend work offered to do extra work if they have some cuny coming up. You know volunteer to be involved. If the marketing team is doing special promotion volunteer to be involved you know. Just get out there and be visible to the people that are decision making roles within departments. You want to get in and the fifth one and I find this to be really really really super important which is left for the fifth one. Speak your truth. Don't be afraid to let people know what you want. Now here's the deal. I want to be very nuanced about this. You earn very specific okay when you are interviewing for this job. It's all about this job. You're not telling them. Oh well I really WanNa work in community relations and marketing. No you're focus on this role you want. People want to hire somebody that want this role. So you're all in for the sales job or whatever it is that does role as organization. That's your focus. That's your only focus but once you get in there and he started doing your best and he started to establish yourself and you start to you know be visible to other people in other departments. You should be vocal about your career. Path your dreams and what you want to where you want you head within the organization. I remember just talking to Celia BUSA director of ESPN NEXT. Just recently great episode. That originally go back and listen to if you haven't already and she said she wants people who advocate for themselves and who will say what interests them where they wanna go and what they want next. Because nobody else is going to do that for you. So how this works. Let's take this from a very tactical standpoint. Do not go around behind your bosses back. You'RE GONNA have a boss in the sales department. Everything Kinda goes through them. I you can still network and you still get to know other people within the organization but don't go tone another department. Hey you know what I'd really like to do. I'd liked to work in marketing. Talk to your boss. I think about it. Your boss is going to be really offended. If you're sneaking around trying to get into a different department without just coming to them I have a relationship with them. Were you can go and talk to them and say look. I love what I'm doing here. I'm totally focused and all in but I will tell you. I hope some day work in the community relations department. So I'm going to put in a little bit of extra work over there. I'm GONNA do some extra stuff on my own time. I'M GONNA volunteer over there or I really wanted to work in marketing. And I'm going to be doing this and doing that. Or whatever and I think it's really important to me to eventually. That's the direction I want ahead if you do this in a respectful manner and you talk to your boss in this fashion and let them know your goals in life where you wanNA head. They're going to become your advocate. They're going to look for those opportunities to help you. They might even let you like Hey You know I know you're supposed to be doing these X Y and Z things today. There's this cool thing going on over and community relations. I want you to help out and I'm telling you bosses do this. They want their people to stay. They're good people. They want them to stay. They want them to be happy. They want them to thrive so be one of the good people. I be one of those people that makes yourself invaluable at the organization and then started looking for ways to have a conversation with your boss and I'm not saying in the first couple of months I'm saying like after six to eight months where you've really started to prove yourself and done a great job. Start to have that open dialogue with your boss and say eventually this direction. I'd like to go. I'll do some extra opportunities on my own time. And just let it be known so that then when an opportunity does come up they might even be. That's how you say look. There's a marketing coordinator role opening up. I'M GONNA put it in a good word for you so again. Be Respectful talk to your boss first and then you know talk to other departments opportunities. Come up her. Giovanni I think that gives you a pretty robust answer and for my anybody else's questioning about the handshake situations with corona virus. And what's going on in the world right now? I think these are very rational conversation to have and you know what keep it going further than that too. It's not just irrational relationship. The conversation to have in this moment these these questions of making right choices based on what's most important for the long run for you versus offending somebody else. I played barefoot and I didn't go to school now I can help people. I prefer to build schools and give poor people food and clothing. I have built schools and I've built a stadium. We provide clothes shoes and food. For people in extreme poverty. In addition I give seventy euros per month to all people from very poor Senegalese region in order to contribute to their family economy. I do not need to display luxury. I'm GonNa talk about it not GonNa do this. The you know quote stuff but I'm GonNa give you a little bit of real life there. Keep that in perspective. Okay have that expectation stars all right. Now let's get to. Today's question is from Nick in Salisbury Maryland. Hey Brian I've heard you talk to and generally about how to optimize your resume to defeat to the applicant tracking systems. But I haven't heard you speak specifically to address. How so? How do you do it so nick? I'm GonNa read an answer. Your question primarily because you used the word tangentially. I found that pretty impressive. I think it's also a fair critique. I may have mentioned the importance of defeating the applicant tracking systems in passing. But maybe I never got into the nuts and bolts of it so. Let's do that because I do think it's an important conversation that we should be having. So let's do a quick explainer on how. Ats Systems Work so anybody. That's listening in isn't familiar can understand. Ats stands for applicant tracking systems. And what does that mean? It means it's a system used by organizations to track all the people that apply for their jobs. He keeps everything in order. But it's also a way for them to search and filter and find and discover the best possible candidates so instead of somebody going through a thousand resumes by hand. They use an applicant tracking system to filter through resumes and find out. Is this person a match for what we need? I mean it's that simple really like rather than looking through a thousand resumes. They put all the resumes through. This applicant tracking system. They tell the system. This is what we need from this role and the system POPs out you know twenty matches fifty matches one hundred matches or whatever. It's a starting point K and as I tell everybody all the time if you don't have a resume that is optimized for each individual. You're applying for. You'd never beat the system enough so I even know you exist like I don't even see you you don't exist to me. You're applying for my job. If you don't get through that first filter in a year a match for the job I just I don't even know you exist. It's no offence. I don't read your cover letter. I don't even know you exist so when I talk about all the time and I use that word. Defeat the applicant tracking systems. Blessed be honest defeating. I what I WANNA do is say you up to succeed within this system because we're not trying to trick the system and I'm going to get into that a little bit later. You're trying to make sure that your best qualities are on display. That's a different thing. We're not trying to trick it. We're trying to just make sure your the best of you is shown. And the things that apply most of this job are displayed. So let's talk about that okay. Number one only apply for jobs you are qualified for. That is the most important thing I can tell you. And there's a lot of reasons for it but the basics this you're not going to get through if you're not qualified for the job if you don't have the skill set they need you're wasting everybody's time and that does build up your reputation in the industry as somebody who just wants to work in sports rather than they want this particular job like. I say this all the time but teams don't necessarily want to hire fans of their team right. It's not a down thing. It's not a bad thing to say. Hey you know I'm passionate about this organization. I grew up loving it or whatever but they also can view that as a distraction but even more important. That's not a qualifying experience. Like don't apply for the job if you can't actually do the job because you're wasting everybody's time and they're keeping track. That's what this system does. It keeps track of your history. So let's go on a number two. Don't apply for a ton of jobs at the same company. Now here's why for that. You basically get a account made for you when you apply for a job with any company They have your name now in the database and next to your name. We'll put all the jobs that you've applied for. And if they're looking at you for a job and they see you've applied for fifteen jobs company in the last year. We'll what message does that. Tell them that tells them. You want to work here no matter what not necessarily you want this job. And that's an important distinction. You might tell yourself that shows them that I really WanNa work for their organization. Not really what you're telling them is that you're not in love with any of these jobs you just want to work for the company. And that's not what they want. They want somebody that wants this job. That is called fight for this opening. That wants to do this job. And thrive in it not just in the building not just have the Philadelphia Eagles Name Tag. Not just be able to buy gear discount. They want somebody that wants to be the email marketing coordinator or wants to be an intern in their seasonal program or whatever they want them to want that role. And if you on your file with this team have applied to fifteen twenty jobs than that sends the wrong message so do not be applying for tons and tons of jobs. One company only apply going back to number one only apply for jobs. You were qualified for number three. Don't try any tricks you see on the interwebs. That seemed like they are bypassing your lack of qualifications. Here's what I mean. If you see some whereas like defeat the applicant tracking system make sure to highlight keywords in white or change your fund to this or. Don't do this trick or this hack. Don't do that either. You're qualified for the job. You're not right either. You have the skills for the role and you can do it or you don't period what we're talking about. Trying to make sure your skills come to the forefront if you're trying to do little tricks and things eventually a human is going to read your resume and they're going to see right through it and they're going to be like this is crap. You just got here for the wrong reasons. It's GonNa make them question their applicant tracking system. Maybe but it's not GonNa make them hire you. You might get through first part. You might get noticed you might get to a point where somebody looks at it and then no further but tricking. The system isn't what we're looking for here. Okay that's not gonNA work. What does work is making sure you number four making sure you include all the right keywords now again the job description that you will find on working sports dot com all the.

They can see that there that love that passionate always been. I've never been one of those people make. Oh well if I'm not going to be the starting God doc and I don't WanNa play the game no I just WanNa be out there and play so I was never any pressure from either my parents to compete at a high level double. There was never any pressure from them to you. Know go out there and and they. They weren't those angry parents in this dance. I'll put it to you like like that. They were just riding to the fact that you have to play. Yeah they just wanted to see their son go out there and do what he did. What I I mean? Of course the water did you can't quit. You don't quit halfway through with you. Sign up to do it. You do it for a full season now if next even want to do it. That's fine but if you commit to it then you're going to go through you know. I was looking at South when I was listening to Mike Tyson's podcast boxing. And the Ad Van Holyfield on the show and Dan Vendor holy fellow new still a small child and I guess he went to a boxing tournament and he actually lost his first ars fight and he was talking about he remembered his mom. Basically calling for dinner enter and he was saying that he was really upset because he lost and is bombed basically made them come out with Actually by what was problem and Islamic laws and he didn't want to be Baltimore Moore and his mom was like okay so you law zoning you need to quit you know she. She got 'em about it like so you're gonNA have some losses GonNA win some. You'RE GONNA lose some but it doesn't mean she colleges because you lost one time and because of the heavyweight champions of the world bill by this what it'd be like what if my tie some of it. You know boxing in work with you know training we cut Custom on what. Are you been iron Mike Tyson. Or what have you been Mike Tyson. Who lives in you know? I mean he lives in Brownsville. You know out on the streets right. I'm just glad we don't have to worry about that. Because I think so many times you know. In this day and age we lose good talent and we don't get to see full potential athletes athletes. That are out there because they lose and they feel like that's it and it very difficult. It's very difficult. The cult thing mentally and emotionally. Because Trust me I've been through plenty of time I've lost. I've Lost Games. I've lost in life. I mean are there so many lessons that I've learned but through each of those lessons that has made me about it. I it has made me realize you know. Oh Okay what can I have done better. What was the mistake that I made? And even if I didn't make the mistake that person was simply just better than me on that particular given night. It's really what what it is. I mean this is life right by a sports losses laws in life. I always feel you can learn from it. Some people just don't know how to cope with learning about it and let me ask you this okay. So what's your thoughts on. The state is like mental health in sports. Any better there is still much more. There's so much more that that needs to be done when it comes to not just the safety of the players but just to the overall you no compass. That is the mental health issue especially when it comes to football. But I mean he'll get hit with a ninety mile. An hour fastball. Jari for scarred for life as well. Yeah it's there I've always gonNA say Bacon. Always do more conclusively a very the stories that are coming out now that we are hearing about players from from when we up and just the the ramifications indications of playing in such sports. You know you have to get that nipped in the bud from the Wunderle. I'll just take football on the Pop Warner League to the to the you know high school school. JV varsity college semi pro pro. Whatever it is you have got to find a limited as far as the safety because way too often and way too much and now we are hearing about these players who poppies blackouts? Had these lapses. And you know the stress that the medications and it's it's so much you know and I don't even WanNa start on the CPE's and concussions. Because as an athlete athlete the game. I can honestly sit here and tell you knock on wood. I've never had a concussion. However I have been around people title who have had them and the lingering effects that happened after the fact? I don't wish that really you know what I'm talking about like Librarian. Injuries especially me being a wrestling fan as well. Why okay? So for instance. I just read an article that vices actually going to do a he Documentary on Crispin Wall in Chris. Benoit a loan to have like several concussions and of course a mixture steroid royd usage. And everything and you know w swept at Story under the rug because of unfortunately how his life ended and of course the situation with his family in the way that ended in results. And I think it needs to be talked about in not only the wrestling community but also in sports in general regardless of his sports entertainment or not we need to start having more discussions on C.. T. In what can happen because criminal law stories a good example of off. What is a cautionary tale to those? Who Don't you know? Check on their checkup athletes. Yeah I mean I know it's going to be very controversial because I mean the situation was horrible. We all know this a what if he would have got checked because I had been wrestling with for so long anyway and maybe there could have been something to stop this from happening if it would have been talked about possibly I mean you know Hindsight Hindsight being twenty we can sit back in all the questions and say well what about this. What about that? Ah Not trying to play devil's advocate but the question that I ask is how much knowledge was. was there back then you know. How educated was the industry back then to be able to do some of the things that they're doing now to check for that stuff and I'm not in no way? Am I just trying to sweep it under the rug and make it appear as though that you know they were art educated on it. But the one thing I've known and this is in regards to any sport is if you don't properly I believe educate yourself as organization or as an individual. It doesn't matter you were going to go about doing things the way you've always done thing eh because we get into a routine. It's only when we break away from our norm and as people tell me every day a and I tell people get comfortable with being in that is when we're able to find answers so I I'm I'm very happy that this is coming out because at one time I was a fan however the question that I am going to ask is was the knowledge that you were sharing. Now were was the education that is coming out now. was that there when this was going on or was it. After the fact basically did they need to happen in order for people to stop turning a blind eye to drew a lot of these players even. Nfl I remember the tragedy. We had out here in Kansas City. One of our players killed his wife and then killed himself on the practice field. You wonder if like was a mental health issues was he advocates a CT issues that were causing a lot of pain. Why there's so many different stories just in the last decade and this has been going on since probably forever? I mean minko right. I mean we've all seen the Will Smith Movie Talking about the CTE problems but is getting to the point. Now they're like we can't say silent about this and these young kids that are going into the league's you're right life for Pop Warner and up. Doc there's got to be more like safety precautions there's there's got to be more There's more than look at it. There's gotTa be more requirements. It's gotta be a better system especially if they're young children playing all the way until other other full grown adults exports general. You cannot just turn turn a blind eye to know you and I think nowadays a lot of people a lot of 'em these are not doing a blend absolutely because they realized that the ramifications are going to be so great if they don't get in front of it if they don't buy the Antler. You can't just let it go when you do that. You're not acknowledging it nor are you working way to solve it. I completely agree on that sincere. Then roll into like a four-game homestretch You know my team and I were continually working with the typically bipartisan the XFL and we can't wait for that season he got started in February. Of course you know in January we find out How many of us will be given the opportunity to attend the Super Bowl Down to Miami media? "I told my wife I said I'm going and she's like you're not ready. What do you mean? I'm not ready. She's like you're not ready. It's like what have you done to prepare yourself to go meet this man so care is the GM on my favorite football team. How how can I not be ready? I'M GONNA go talk to this man. I know this team to like okay. She's like you pay for it. You can go now at the time. We're saving for a house. So that's where she got me. So I wound up not going but what I did do when I spent all twenty fifteen into twenty thirty sixteen preparing myself. I started a podcast out of my gal for my dining room table with some friends. Some guys I they work within the past and I said all right I'm gonNA rebuild and reinvent myself so then twenty sixteen. I'm ready to go so I took that year ear and I studied and researched and I watched you know what the commentators and the media people were doing on TV. And I listened to them on radio and I tried to emulate being like them while still adding my own unique style. Two things twenty sixteen rolls around and and I was like there wasn't even a question the minute I knew this conference was going on. I was like I'm going booked my flight but another new suit both my rent a car. The whole nine yards got on the plane and before I left I looked at my wife when she dropped me off and I said to her I said thank you because you you were right last year. I was not prepared to go go do she just give me cheek and sent me on my way. When I got Indianapolis Annapolis it was one of those moments that I had felt and I hadn't felt in a long time? It was like I'm supposed to be here. I'm suppose host to meet these people people and talk to these people. I go to this conference a network. I'm meet the founders of the organisation. I thanked them for their time. Talked to all the speakers I bring my business cards. No resumes this time. I left those at home but I made sure that everybody I spoke shoot. I made sure to get their name their phone number and their email address to out of the three at the very least and I asked each one of them. Oh May I follow up with you. Middle Part of next week just so I could stay in front of them just so I could be. The person person that I knew I could be everybody was welcoming. Everybody was so receptive people wanted to talk to me. They wanted to know about the. I've made so many connections. It's been incredible the last four years since I've started this thing where I'm at right now now and I'll let you know last three and a half almost four years have been a little grueling times. They've taken you. You know a professional toll on me. Because I've had to really throw myself into this but I will be honest. I wouldn't change a moment of it because going into twenty twenty I once again am on an am radio station that I co host and produce. I've established my own brand started my own business. James Harden and Russell Westbrook's what's going to be jampacked week just for the sports arena for myself and and for the entire team but the biggest thing for us is the College Football Championship We have been given so much you just attention as far as being able to go to some of these huge bowl games that we're not going to be with the actual the big play awesome because you know those are a little further away than we can be at this time but I mean the games that are going to be here in the Florida area. It's huge for the sports arena. Having the opportunity to just continually increase our brand to grow to network to meet these people. And just really elevate bait who we are so this is an exciting time for us You know come the. NFL Playoffs in January the Super Bowl in February and then then we have rekindled our relationship with a organization called Sports Management Worldwide S. M.. WW They put on conferences France's throughout the Year Baseball Competition Basketball Hockey tennis football. I do believe they'll do a NASCAR one. Well we've had a partnership honors ship with them over the last three years and then invited us back so we get the opportunity to do even more networking but with those people who we were actually doing the day to day stuff that we are looking to do and as an added bonus we get to go to the NFL combine at Lucas Oil Stadium. Indianapolis have the opportunity to see these college students who are preparing for the next level the NFL. We get to be inside the stadium now Allow people only the washes on television. They only allow probably maybe two three thousand people in the stadium to watch this and we're fortunate enough to be a part of that group. I mean I've talked to people in their light weight. He wanted to combine again. You GotTa Look gaffer this guy at check out of this guy talking about this guy and it's it's just really for me at the first year that I went. It was very humbling experience because I was like. I didn't know what to expect. Didn't what I was going to get exposed to but as the years have gone on and as my team has grown and I have grown in honing my craft wrath the biggest thing for me was just seeing these people who win this is their first time getting to experience it you know for me. It always goes goes back to my first time. And it's like I know that feeling and a quick story if I cannot tell you my second year. I'm going to the combine. It's happened to sit with a father and son who were out of Ohio. They drove six hours. The Indianapolis to attend the combine. The Dad had won tickets through some kind of contest in his son drove. And you know we were sitting there washing the players. Go out there and I just getting a feel for him. His son was a fourteen year. Old Straight a honor roll student who practice four days a week to B.. He wants to be a NFL quarterback and it just impressed me so much to see this young man and.
