The Future Of Sports (MM #3829)

"The mason minute. With Kevin mason. I've been a sports fan all of my life, but I've actually gone from being more of a rabid sports fan to just a casual fan over the years. But the other night when I heard the news about the new ESPN Monday Night Football mega cast with Peyton and Eli Manning, I had to check it out. And I think I saw the future of sports broadcasting. With that said, I actually did sports play by play in college, thought about doing it professionally, but I saw it the other night and said this is where we're going. Sure, there may always be a play by play guy at professional like what I once was, but sitting there listening to two guys just casually watching a game and then all the plays don't really matter. But what they said mattered more. It may not be patent in Eli which everybody say it works because their brothers and works so well together. But imagine just doing this with all different sports. Having different ways to watch the game. Sure, there may be one traditional play by play going, but imagine being able to do this with a lot of pro players and having visitors come in and out and being a part of the gang. Feel like you're right there with them on the couch or in the bar hanging out and having a good time. That's only ten games this football season on Monday night, but I think it's going to be huge.

Sports Marketing Podcasts Opportunities With Learfield IMG College CMO Jennifer Davis

"Do you find that in sports media. I know in radio. There's individual shows that are around one sports or at least a local market. You get a local sports channel. They're gonna talk about the bears and the giants and the cardinals. and the forty niners. And maybe the raiders. Even though they're in vegas they kind of bounce around from individual topic but with podcasting feeds you can be more verticalised. You can just have one specific show. I've seen this on the professional level where there is a warrior show sponsored by the athletic core nbc. But i haven't seen it in the collegiate level where there is the cal bears basketball show by anybody other than the cal athletic program. Maybe it's just because cal. Flex aren't as popular as texas in alabama and florida and some of the other major programs. But are you seeing sort of vertical is shows that are individual sports or school specific. I think there's a huge opportunity there and actually more nuance than what you think. Because college sports people tend to be fans of whatever that our team is playing. Even if they don't know the rules of the game like would we started doing e. sports at the college level. I saw some great tweets from college. Sports fans die hard like tennessee football fans. They're like my team is doing well and east sports. I don't know what that is. But i'm a tennessee band so go volunteers and i think there is as you said kind of across sport affinity but then there are some programs and often it could be the revenue generating sports football basketball but it also could be some of the olympic sports where the fans a lot has been written recently about the fans being very fluid in that. They don't get a lot of game day or meet day content because of the nature of the sport there van said they are used to looking for nontraditional content to keep up with what's happening in gymnastics or field hockey or swimming or rowing. So i think there's opportunity to do exactly what you are talking about in especially because of that community element. I think we talked about that. A couple of episodes ago is that. There's nothing like that college community. College community can be rallied around a specific type. And i think you're onto

Richardson Will Miss Olympic 100 After Marijuana Test

"Zachary Richardson. If you were not a sports fan, even if you're a hardcore sports fan. She's in an Olympic sport that does not get the attention it deserves. Track and field gets that law when it's an Olympic year, and the U. S. Olympic track and field trials were unbelievable, over two week span at the University of Oregon. She was going to be a gold medal threat in the 100 M because she won the 100 M of the Olympic trials, but she had to apologize on Friday morning for testing positive for marijuana. The United States Anti Doping Agency on Friday announced that she has accepted a one month suspension and in accepting that penalty The results in the U. S. Olympic trials have been disqualified and she will forfeit any metal points and prizes. Travis Tigard is in charge of the U. S. A. D S and CEO when he was on genetic Golic Jr this what he had to say about the U S. A. D, a suspending chicory Richardson. It's a really tough and Sympathetic case, you know, as my statement said, when we had to handle it when it was reported positive to us, because the rules you know, gave us no choice whatsoever. Um and she, you know, acknowledged the situation and did treatment as We, You know, worked out with her and gave her the absolute minimum of one month that we could, but recognizing that also who you know, automatically disqualified her victory in the 100 M. You know, we were heartbroken by it because you know we're not here as an anti doping organization to, you know, deal with recreational or non performance or non health threatening. Situations. But, you know, we have to follow the rules of the World Anti Doping Agency, which are the global rules that apply around the world. The two problems I had with the decision. Number one people making excuse of chicory Richardson. Chikara Richmond said that she knew the rules. She said her use of marijuana as a coping mechanism at the finding out her biological mother had passed away. I understand that

Oakland City Council Considering A’s “Howard Terminal or Bust” Offer

"Vote whether to approve the A's proposal to build a new baseball stadium at Howard Terminal. They say Their waterfront proposal, which includes housing, a performance space and hotels will revitalize West Oakland, an area of the city that has historically suffered from gentrification and displacement by big infrastructure projects like bark. Freeways in the post office down there. Opponents say it will cost jobs at the port and argued that the stadium should be built to the Coliseum, where ample transportation infrastructure already exists. Ratcheting up the tension as the A's ultimatum that if they can't build on the waterfront, they will move away entirely, leaving Oakland without a major league sports team following the loss of the city's other teams. We'll hear about the plan at what it means for Oakland and Bay Area sports fans. First I want to bring Nina Thorsen, producer at KQED and the California report onto the show to give us a reset. Welcome to the show. Nina Hey, Alexis. Good to talk to you. So first, let's let's talk about the specific area where it is. I want to give listeners like a sort of mental map. Where exactly is Howard Terminal? So if you've ever taken a fairy and gotten off at the open side, it's immediately north of where the ferry terminal is right now and then in between Howard Terminal and, um, the rest of the port of Oakland. That's where Schnitzer Steel the steel factory is. So it's right on the water, and, um, right adjacent to the ferry terminal. And I think that's one of the things that makes this such a complicated location is on the one side. You've got the port and on the other side you've got Jack London is right right in between there. Sure, And I mean, I think this is the challenge inherent to anybody who's going to build. Any kind of new facility in an established city is you want to be close to things that are already there and places where people want to go, But that means you're going to be next to some people, and there's just a lot of complications involved for sure. Give us a quick recap

Driving A Successful Launch for Conversational Actions with Google's Mike Bifulco

"Imagine this you're working on a team. That's building a game for actions on google. You're getting to the point in the development process where you can see the light at the end of the tunnel that first releases coming well with any luck. You're a member of a savvy team that has done the work ahead of time to think about marketing plan. You know it's critical to understand your audience and have a plan to reach them long before your app hits the virtual shelves in addition to that. You've worked with your team to define some metrics for success so that you know whether or not you're marketing campaigns are doing a good job of reaching the audience. You're looking for when it comes to putting together a marketing plan. I'm pretty fond of this quote. A design isn't finished until using it. When you're wearing marketers hat your goal is to bring a compelling message to that somebody and to get them to tryout. You're cool new game. We'll break our marketing. Plan down into a few steps first off. Let's talk about the building blocks of strategic marketing. If you're watching is because you're a developer remember. This stuff is good to know no matter what having broad understanding of your team's goals for launch can only help you point towards success when thinking about how to market your game you want to assemble a coalition of team members with a broad range of skills. Generally this cross functional team may include participation from the following groups public relations creative leads copywriting engineering and social media management. There's a few key activities you'll want to think about when developing your strategy you want to get to a shared understanding of your target audience evaluate your marketing channels and to think about measures of success. So that you can track how well your marketing activities are working defining. Your target audience should be based on the objective of your action specifically determine if you're trying to reach existing users or new users often building an action is a way to attract new customers thanks to the buzzer. This generates npr however given the nascent stage voici. In the average consumer's life. It's best to start with actions that target existing users and then tackle use cases that drive new user growth. Once you've learned more about how your existing users prefer to engage with your brand via voice for example. A game designed around managing a fictional sports team might initially target. Gamers are sports fans later. They can expand their audience to encourage new players outside of that core audience to try the game as you create your channel plan. Think about how your promotion pits in with your brands. Ecosystem and customer touch points. Remember that it's important to have a consistent and cross channel strategy look to wherever user traffic is greatest to highlight your actions availability

The NCAA Supreme Court Case Could Forever Change College Sports

"Weekend, college sports fans will be watching the basketball court as the final force played out. But this week, fans were watching another court. The Supreme Court in what seemed like a toss up for the NC, double a In a case that could loosen its Crip over college athletics and mean greater compensation for student athletes. NC, Double A is trying to shield its rules from antitrust scrutiny and asking the justices to overturn a ruling that would let member schools offer student athletes more in the way of education related compensation. Many of the justices seemed sympathetic to the student athletes and skeptical about the NC, double A's argument. So the argument is they are recruited. They're used up and then they're cast aside without even a college degree. So they say, How can this be defended in the name of amateurism? Well, it just strikes me as odd that the coaches salaries have ballooned and they're in the amateur rights, as are the players. E mean, you said earlier. Uh, this would allow the players to receive $6000 a year as if that were some exorbitant amount when the TV contracts or in the billions 6000 years not Not a lot.

Activision Blizzard's New Research Highlights Value of Esports Sponsorships

"Throughout the 400. Episodes of this podcast. I've spotlighted quite a few smart brand sponsorships for Esports. That's because without other revenue streams you off brand Integrations are crucial to e-sports continued growth sponsors deliver insane value in traditional Sports and they can feasibly deliver that same value to e-sports with continued increases in viewership wage. According to research published by Activision Blizzard. Today e Sports sponsorships are actually more valuable than traditional Sports sponsorships in a few key areas first up. Here's how the research was conducted considering a is clearly a bit biased in the Pro e Sports side of things they brought in market research firm alter agents as well as Neuroscience experts from immersion. The research was conducted in late 2020 and features. Surveys of Esports and traditional Sports viewers from 16 to 40 years old. They also held interviews with participants and the neuroscientists utilized immersions platform to study emotional response to the ads so clearly some big third parties involved in this so it's not just Activision Blizzard being like a sports sponsorships are great, which we all expect them to say data indicated three major findings, but they didn't say if these were the only things they were looking for as they're all positive on the Esports side. It wouldn't be that hard to have a negative Esports finding and just not published that one so I think that context is a little bit important. But with that being said, here's what they did find. The first finding e Sports is better keeping viewer attention during sponsorship ads resulting in higher performance on critical brand metronome. The second finding e Sports viewers are more accepting of advertisements than traditional sports fans showing a higher emergent score, which is defined as attention plus emotional response dead. And the third finding brand favorability and brand perception are higher for Esports experiences compared to traditional Sports and those findings have been backed by anecdotal experiences for myself and my name of the guests on the E Sports Network podcast, but having a true survey is cool to see in general Esports has two big things going for it one. There isn't nearly as much crowding for sponsorship spaces. If you look at the the traditional Sports stadium and you'll see 30 brands or more Esports usually has a handful of more ingrained partners and two brand Partnerships are seen as crucial to allowing Esports to exist at all sports could totally still exist without braids in Esports. Probably not they make up a much larger slice of the revenue pie. That means viewers are more receptive to ads because their favorite player or orange Billy to exist might depend on that a door that bred integration given e Sports ability to reach a tough, but sought-after demographic and it's no wonder brands are flocking to e-sports opportunity wage.

20 Years Later: How Dale Earnhardt's Death Changed NASCAR Forever

"Ryan mcgee. Espn daily's chief. Paint trading correspondent. Thank you for joining me man. That's me man when i started. Espn a really really long. Time ago and i had this accent there were like. Hey you know about nascar right. I go yes you do. More than just know about nascar ryan you have now reported and narrated a new film for east sixty and it's called intimidator the lasting legacy of dale earnhardt. And i wanna talk to you about it today because it's a lot. It's about a lot more than how transcendent dale was on the track. It focuses on how he radically changed. Nascar's culture when it comes to safety but before we get into that. I do want you to just kinda sketch out for us. Who dale was for the uninitiated here and what made him such a towering figure in the nascar universe well and it's interesting because he's been gone twenty years i mean nascar's more than seven hundred races without del earnhardt and so for those of us of a certain age the idea of having to explain him and and why he's such a big deal seems insane but we saw what the last dance. The last dance ron's and half of twitter was like well. He was good. But you know this jordan character. Yeah we should know about it and we were so offended but bless their hearts. They didn't see him play. And so in this case you know. You have an entire generation twenty years exactly of sports fans who didn't see our heart race but it wasn't just about seventy six wins seven championships and also was just about the presence in the room. Always say with dell earnhardt if there was a thousand of us in a ballroom and we're all looking at a stage and he were to come in the back door when none of us were looking. We'd all instinctively. Just turn around because the air in the room changed. There was just a presence in a way that it carried himself and conducted his business and the intimidator thing that was legit. Every time i will. I know him. And every time i was in a room with him there was a little part of me. That was just trying not to say something stupid or pass out so on the back of the baseball card ryan so to speak. What are the accomplishments. That people should know about what dale did. Well the seventy six winds are really big deal but the seven championships and seventy plus year. The stockcar racing only three people one seven championships the checkered flag bands around their heat waves to them. That checkered card. His greatest success was on the super speedways. the taliban soup speedway and daytona he one thirty four racists and though tone national speedway thirty four nella one of those was the daytona five hundred and that was part of the appeal for him was even though he was this one tough customer and the man in black timid and all those things it took you twenty tries to finally win the daytona five hundred lawson in heartbreaking fashion multiple times twenty years frustration. Taylor that program names on the can't take it off. I guess i love it. He just he was in every man but he also of superman and that was always the appeal and outside of that ballroom. Full of the sports powerbrokers ryan. What was his status. Like regionally among the nascar faithful. How would you begin to describe what he meant to those people. What i hated it. Because when he came along in the late nineteen seventies. and you know it wasn't disrespect. But he didn't back down from. Richard petty from kailua from bobby allison from david pearson from any pissed them off the couldn't stand him and he would recommend a short track race. In martinsville and afro richer. Penn is electric. Listen kid you can't do it like this. And he just kept doing his way.

P.E. Teacher Becomes Full-Time Sports Gear Reseller

"Today in our latest feature will hear from a teacher who buys and resells sports gear. I love to look at stories of simple reselling. Because as i said simple. These are very simple projects. That are important to highlight. Because it's something that most people can do if you're out there and you're like totally new to the whole world. This is a great thing to jump into. I think The guy we're going to hear from. Today matt his total startup cost with something like one hundred dollars actually makes his first profit by selling his own stuff like his own. Jerseys kind of reminds me how. I was selling my own items from around my apartment more than twenty years ago when i got into this kind of thing and eventually for him. He ends up going all in with. This action retires from teaching to focus on his re-selling dig his businesses. Going really. well he's doing up to eight thousand dollars a month or so. He's managed this all throughout the pandemic of course so he's got some good lessons about time management etc. Now we. I heard from matt nearly two years ago in the original story Let's now hear directly from him. And i'll come back at the end. Perhaps share a story or two from my own re-selling years little quick trip down memory lane along with some advice for you. If you'd like to get into this to no matter how much you sell ship station makes it super easy to manage ship your orders from all your sales channels faster cheaper and more efficiently. They have been helping many of our listeners. For four years now ship station you'll spend a lot less time on shipping a lot more time growing your business in no matter where you sell amazon oetzi. You're on website. They can funnel all your orders into one simple interface service from a great company. That as i said i know has helped a lot of our listeners. You can ship more or less time with the offer code hustle. Get your sixty day free trial. That is two months free of no hassle stress free shipping. All you gotta do is go to ship. Station dot com. Click the microphone at the top and type in hustle that is ship station com offer code hustle. Make shit happen. My name's matthew myers. We are located in indianapolis indiana on the north side of town. My side hustle from seven. Twenty seven was kevin's lockouts instill as epa clubhouse side. Hustle is a resale sports in store. So i essentially. I had goodwill's stores scrap sales markets and then essentially resell gently used sports fan gear. And it's pretty much anything ranging from palace pros From both ear to cycling ear to winter jackets could be anything from maki North face to to the old nineteen ninety a starter jacket. Everybody has the chicago bulls one that we all grew up more so i always try to find the brand. The brand names let everyone tries to buy but off discount and then obviously compared to larger with nike and medicine and things like that. So essentially i just i go to stores deal mainly for stores buy low sell high and try to offer big products to people and it seems to save to be working where people are always gonna be wearing that either to a game and obviously you really go into games right out. During a pandemic people like wearing that stuff going on their favorite team. I started this back in two thousand seventeen of between teaching jobs. I left my previous school for a new teaching opportunity. But i was also unemployed needed cash so i kinda just sold things on the side that i wasn't using it like an old jersey so i sold an old chicago cubs jersey for seventy bucks tonight. Said well you know. Maybe maybe something to this. So i'm going to sell an i. I probably had thirty forty jerseys. I want i sold them. Georgia this cycle a mortgage. And i was like okay. Well they sold pretty quick. You know maybe maybe this is something. I can actually take off and run with and actually create business but you know between north korea and mainly will be clothes. I've been able to manage to make profit enough where i can officially retired from teaching. And make this slimane hustle. I before i left. I needed to see the numbers on my end of a meghan. You know five six thousand a month okay. You know sales growth sales. So i knew that i was it. Was it was a good enough jump to to try to make this full-time gig. And i'm lucky to last year's at it has even with my biggest challenge right now is that now. It's time time time though is going to be a challenge. I think i think a lot of people will tell you that My my i love working at night. And i'm kind of like a night out precise so i'll let you everything done late at night. Then as morning hits you know it's hard to get up at seven eight o'clock and try to figure out you know. Hey i need to get all this stuff done before. I don't know four and get my orders out so just trying to be more productive trying to be better on my time. Let's old spent my biggest challenge and going into this year. I wanted to really make make that my project per se of like you know what it's time to get up. It's time to be productive. It's time to get to the stores. The fun part about all this is that you can go on thrift and you can go and find all the stuff. The hard part is get it all up getting listed getting measured and then getting shipped out with someone. That's that's always the nasa art so just trying to balance both has been tough but again realizing that this is my full time job like there is no teaching job anymore. They're in snow. Kindergarteners coming in for p. Like just to be completely focused on everything. I think so far it's only been seven days of twenty-three one pasha thank you so much matt really appreciate that update So glad to know what's going so well you've been able to make it your full-time gig check out. Marty Schottenheimer, NFL coach with 200 wins, dies at 77

"So james some sad news in the nfl coaching world. If you're of a certain vintage you'll remember the name marty schottenheimer. He was a coach starting with the new york giants back in seventy five when he was their linebackers coach and kept coaching right up until two thousand six with the san diego chargers. He was a head coach in kansas city. Washington san diego. But i remember most with cleveland browns head coach in the mid eighties for them when they got. Oh so close to a super bowl. Berth in the afc title game. They're about to beat denver. They're about to go in for the winning touchdown in the final minute of the game and earnest byner get stripped just as he's about to step into the end zone offload jeremiah casteel. Dist reached in grabbed the ball off byner denver recovers and they hold on for thirty eight to thirty three win. And that was. It's called the fumble. If you say that in cleveland people know the fumble ohio and The brown had no shortage in sports of disappointments. So that would be one of them. When you say the fumble people know exactly what you're talking about and really gives until the cavaliers finally when an nba title really lent itself to the lovable loser. Tag that cleveland. Sports fans have had for many years but marty schottenheimer Certainly had lots and lots of success. I think he was like fourth all time as far as coaching winds. Go so sad news to hear his passing today at the age of seventy

"It's a bit of a slow news day in these Sports as America celebrates The Unofficial holiday that is the day after the Super Bowl but there's no apparel collaboration that e sports fans are stoked about first a few thoughts on the big game besides Brady winning again which is absolutely absurd we saw him or big gaming personalities intertwined with the game this year off nadeshot appeared in a commercial for Rockstar and last year we saw ninja and fortnite World Cup winner Booga appearance Superbowl commercials as well in the stands ninja and dr. disrespect were featured with cardboard cutouts at home Here's game. The NFL is clearly aiming at a younger audience. They streamed previous playoff games on Nick and on Twitch in this game. They brought in Nickelodeon slime cannons for part of the broadcast, but they didn't do a tire simulcast on Nick like they did with the previous games the legal keep tapping into gaming influencers and channels with the goal in mind of capturing younger audiences think they're realizing that just a focus on Madden isn't should be enough of a gaming push the NFL could look towards e Sports organizations for how to connect with their target audience clearly Team Liquid has their fingers on the pulse. Super Bowl Sunday Changes: Face Masks, Empty Seats and Driveway Parties

"Get into it right away because we are talking about the super bowl. The super bowl is this sunday. My question to you jay is what are we excited about the superbowl and should we be. It makes me explore is the super bowl without parties without gathering with people without it being the event without the event is it. What is it. I guess my question so it's not necessarily a great game k. Not always usually. It's boy rams patriots that would most recently those one of the worst games those one of the worst football games i've ever seen now. Yes every so often. There's a rams rams Falcons was a good game are being patriots falcons. Were alkan was unbelievable where they came back. That was incredible but like that's not going to happen every time. And it's not your team. It's rare that your team right once in a great while it's your team and you have a deep investment in the game means something to otherwise if you're not a die hard sports the game doesn't mean much to you. So what is the game. The game is an excuse to get together. A bunch of friends to stuff your face with seven layer dip to have yummy wings at your house to a bunch of people over. We can't do that right now. I hope people don't do that right now. That's not what we're supposed to do. So i hope super bowl parties. Don't create another superspreader. Yup though there won't be that there won't be crowd there won't be fans there. The halftime show is the weekend. The weekend is okay. By like the we i like the weekend. But are you excited about the weekends. Halftime show. i think it'll be good. It's been one good halftime show in the last ten or i mean look. Did tom petty do it. I know bruce springsteen did it prince did it was unbe. Lynch's was unbelievable because it started raining and he was unbelievable and before he died. And you just realize okay. This guy's incredible out. There aren't a lot of great halftime shows. Don't i'm not getting super geeked inside for the weekend. I think it'll be okay but the but when you're with people at a super bowl party and you're all making fun of the halftime show. It's so much fun to me. Not having that gathering this year and again we did it last year. But not having that grouping it really strips the rolled down to what it really is now. If you're a sports fan you care about tom brady. Or it's going to me like another game another game but with less fans and it really strips it down to what exactly is which is a game of two teams. That don't mean anything to

A Casino Chain Bets It Can Hang with the Big Dogs of Fantasy Sports

"The super bowl is this weekend. And the vince lombardi. Trophy is on the line but also on the line. If you're a fantasy sports player your money if you're not familiar. Here's how fantasy sports work you pay apu pick a roster of real players and then wait to see how they do during real games. If your fantasy wide receivers scores a touchdown and a real football game your score goes up. If your fantasy quarterback throws an interception and a real game your suffers and if you find yourself with a roster of players that just aren't performing well you're out of luck you're stuck with him for the season you can kiss that prize money for the highest fantasy score. Good bye well. At least that's how it was before you'll came on the scene over a decade ago both and you'll and its rival draftkings allow users to play daily fantasy sports instead of waiting for the season to end to see how your fantasy team does. You can switch out players everyday feeling good about tom. Brady doesn't you can pick him one day and drop in the next. That flexibility is what makes fan duel and draft kings. The big dogs of daily fantasy sports both companies are valued at over a billion dollars but a recent acquisition is throwing another competitor into the ring and this company knows a bit about hedging. Your bets the casino chain bally's announced last week that it acquired monkey knife fight. Yes that's actually the name of that company but don't laugh it off. Monkey knife fight is the fastest growing daily fantasy platform in the united states and with that acquisition bally's hopes to be able to square off against its larger more established competitors their first challenge standout in a statement about the acquisition. Bali says monkey knife fight is already doing that. He claims that rival platforms are clogged with professional daily fantasy sports players. Which makes it tougher us regular folks to win yes. There are professional daily fantasy. Sports players bally's though says monkey knife fight attracts sports fans and makes quote having fun and winning part of the experience. Another benefit of the acquisition says. Bally's is more customers. Bally's is a big name in betting and betting which all comes down to chance is very different than playing fantasy sports which comes down to skill. at least that's the argument. Fantasy sports companies have made to lawmakers right now only around two dozen states allow sports betting and for bally's that's just not enough customers but guess who already has a wide database of customers in thirty seven states where daily fantasy sports are legal. Yup monkey knife fight. The acquisition means more users in more states for bally's but fan duel draft. Kings shouldn't necessarily be sweating yet. Both companies surged in the third quarter of two thousand twenty draft kings monthly paying users topped one million and fan duel attracted nearly half a million new users that quarter. So it's fair to say that neither companies going anywhere fast because even though sports are a national pastime it looks like fantasy. Sports may soon be edging in on that

"Well, I mean, that's that's a fair point. It's not quite what I'm saying that. Like I want to say that imprint simple. The argument is that all things being equal. The sports fan is deriving happiness. That's what you're saying. So like you ought to be able to say, like, if if there was a Tamla twin universe that we did not a sports fan, that temblor would not be as you. That's right. Yeah. So I, I would say that Tamla and this is the thing that this doesn't measure right that Tam there would be talking to his brother, a lot less. He would be much he would be less. Connected with his his, his childhood friends than he. He would have less to talk about when he's in some strange city with strangers, you know, he wouldn't be able to easily start up conversation with somebody at a bar so and maybe there are other ways in which, yeah, but maybe he'd be like a brilliant film maker, you know, it's hard to know. It's it's very hard to know that. But I do think there are the things that I consider good about being a sports fan. These don't even try to measure they. I don't think anybody thinks I'm a sports fan because it makes me happy after a game like that's just not how you decide whether you're being or whether it's good for you to be a sports fan, so. So you know. You know, sort of in the interest of temblor you and I talked a little bit about beforehand we, we didn't want to just pick a paper to to trash. We wanted to like actually use this to have a discussion about what could be done. What couldn't I think there are questions in the in the study of happened happiness that maybe intractable like that that can't actually be measured, but but like from what you're saying answer me whether or not this would be a reasonable way to assess what you're doing, suppose that you're only a football fan like you like, like suppose you're only a patriots fan would? Do you think that you are happier during the season. Then you are off season? Yeah, I mean, great question. And it's like, honestly, don't know the answer like the with the NFL is a great example because it is kind of consuming thing on in the fall in like the time that you spend watching those games. You're not with your family, you're not right taking like you're not taking a hike. You're not reading, and I do sometimes feel when the season is over kind of relief, you know, like it just frees up a day of the week for me, you know, like and I've come to that sort of realization and so definitely started to limit how much I watch. So it's not because it's not because I think importantly not because of the misery of the losses. No, right. It's just the fact that it's taking up time. It's taking up time that I could be doing something else where, and I think study. Like that could sort of a study like this could at least get at that like, this is what I think there is a there. To the extent that you think, and I'm not sure what I don't know what you think about this to the extent that getting paying and rating your happiness is a reliable guide. Any way to how happy you actually are. If it is then maybe I could have learned, you know, You like. know, like my the thing about fantasy football. I gotta learned that earlier than I did, you know? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I've never taken partner study that I get pinged I, you know, like I think there is a, there's a face validity to to the. If you looked at the data and and people who got pinged when they were having a good meal, didn't report being happier than when they were getting an operation or something, then I would wonder. So I don't think the absolute numbers much. I do think that that the relative comparison overtime with enough observations, I, I like it saying something and what that something is. I'm not one hundred percents. Sure, right. I don't know that it does good at. He's ING part. He Donnette pleasure versus like overall value or meaning in an activity? I'm not. I'm not sure what people are answering, but, but like those questions aside, I think it's taking something interesting and and quantifying it..

"I think number one that this is a really interesting question, like is it worth it? Especially for someone as big a sports fan as I am the question of whether it's actually worth it for me to be such a big sports fan I think is is an interesting one. I know my chair, Dave Phillips who is a big arsenal fan so soccer, the Premier League, he's British. He is told me flat out that being an arsenal fan has a negative impact on his life like he wishes. He never got involved in. It just t- doesn't enjoy it, but he can't help it like he feels like there's nothing you can do at this point, but he, he regrets it and he would if he could somehow go back. In time and not become an arsenal fan, he would. So I think this is true of of of certain people. So that's another thing to say about it. I also it's not as if sorry, just to add, it's not as if it is by definition impossible to continue wanting to do something that makes you unhappy. Right. And so like some people might define that out. They might say, well, no, clearly like it's, it's been you happy in a real. She wouldn't do it, but like we want to like, I want to say that it's not right. Like an addiction might be this way. Like I hate that I need caffeine every day, but I still going to actually choose to do something that makes you consistently unhappy. Why do I keep doing this podcast. Addicted to me to you. So and then the a further point in favor of this investigation is my chair knows that he's being made unhappy. I think there are times where your involved in something and it's it's not clear you think it's making you happy when. In fact, it isn't an example for me with this was probably the last six, seven years that I did fantasy football slowly I realized, wait, I hate this. This is actually making me making my Sunday's way less fun than they normally would be. And just just the frustration and the stress of it, and just the pain in the ass of it. And the way I knew that like it was like finally dawned on me, and then I just quit one year and I just realized right away. Oh my God, it must be like somebody. I don't know like somebody who's doing in some sort of self destructive. Spiral, all of a sudden stops doing it, and it's like incomprehensible to them that they once thought that that was a good idea. Bad relationship. Yeah, exactly. So all those things I will say are true. That said, I think the data that they give doesn't really get at why being a sports fan might make you happy and that any true sports fan would already know that losing is worse than winning the the little bits of happiness you get from winning are not as pleasurable as the suffering you go through when your team loses that think something that's we all understand really well and that are sports fandom. The reason why we're sports fans has a lot more to do with the sort of social part of being a sports fan, just the way in which it engages your activity, the way it keeps you like. All my friends from high school and college that I keep in touch with a big way that we have been able to keep in touch. The reason why we're still talking often involve sports. I talked to my brother like five times as much as I normally would because we're such both such big sports fans, and there's always something new to talk about and it's it's something that is deeply enmeshed in our social lives..

"Of arenas becoming casinos is one that i like as a sports fan one guy hit me up and he said look it's not necessarily about pushing gambling out entirely i'm not against the concept of gambling but the point here is that there is a family atmosphere by design in arenas across america i would think and i think that when you introduce the wagering factor across the board legally and widespread by definition you're sort of changing the nature of what a lot of sports arenas are and in places where gambling gambling is considered a tax on the poor for some level on some level that is not a good look necessarily you know it's not up to all owners or whatever to of decide what people are going to do and i understand that rich guys trying to get richer but there's just something i don't love about the idea of making casinos out of arenas it bothers me i'm not dying on the hill i'm not going crazy about it but don't love it at all spent a long week what are thank everybody for tuning in been a lot but as you want to say one last thing about the ally apple situation and a couple other things i was going to reset what had talked about teammates from what i've learned in my life and career be it in journalism or in any other thing people you're supposed to believe the terrain the same uniform with four reason the people do believe that you're supposed to go to battle with four reason.

"Now being a sports fan i don't really get it either it's not a sports and there's that fad then it's like i don't even know what this is and it's so fascinating an incredible i love this stuff that we are that divers that you do something like baseball that when were american like it's baseball flick ono right it's it's just baseball so we got to get to shout out swallowing passing out these are people that left the hashtag hot peppers last week or or secret hashtag shadowed of the week why do we think about hashtag for this is there some type of freezin' post that is used often the cash hike fix it imposed ethics and that is that is an industrywide like years i joke if you are not part of the film industry and you don't know what that means essentially when you're shooting something crap goes wrong all the time to stuff always goes wrong and if you're really irresponsible and you're the kind of person that we hate you will say oh it'll be fined we'll just it input will fix it later you know all the lights different well we'll just make it brighter in post it never works it's not a good idea and getting into film get that out of your vernacular now editors going to be mad at editor ever tell you those like okay yes i will fix it and post thing i can say it ideal you you should you she to fix that introduction i hate that and i do with it a lot even even when i'm directing something where you're rushed and we're low budget and they're trying to move on and i can tell those of sound problem or whatever and then i'll have other producers showing up and saying we can fix it later will fix imposed and like i don't think we can't fix and then i end up in this nervy like this is on you and we get into guest in this doesn't it work i'm going to remember this and blame you are these are all people that left hashtag how peppers if you want a chance at a shout out next week you can fix it in postwar.

"Yeah i think that's true uh curry are you a sports fan sports fan i am actually maybe not so much as he sports but definitely sports fan all right so let me get a sports fans thoughts on the nc aa i uh i'm in agreement with the fact that uh it's just unfortunate that these schools are making so much money off of the players especially you know with no sense it for them but of course that the the education golden but i do think there are some changes that need to be yeah i i want to go back into the topic of amateurism which is a a term that jacob earlier it's a concept honestly made to basically what it boils down to his idea that education is a privilege not a right and i think that's really problematic at the heart of it because one of the ripple effects that has is it's a concept basically made to reject poor athletes from six or or in the worst case use them user talent to give them in a college royal i give your of euro student athlete who doesn't have the means to go to college on your own taking a scholarship is the only way you're gonna do it yeah and so uh yeah we gets back it's back to this whole balance and some of those people are exceptional athletes uh that don't have the means and to go on their own so they do take it and then they do go on the professional careers that makes sense but that's that's the minority of those folks that's a very little bit of those folks that actually do succeed in go on the professional level it's very others very a little little small amount in comparison to the overall people that are manipulated data and i think a really important thing to note here is that it's a very antiquated way of thinking like a lot of schools reject this way of thinking nowadays but the nc aa cleans onto its so strongly and i think a lot of it stems from the fact that they reap a lot of benefits from it from remain taxfree with schools not liable for compensation and long term health care for players um yeah they're basically on there this is the crux of the argument.

"I'm a believer in the value of of the the fault psyche of the sports fan when i don't care what the game is college football title this that whatever it is i think he span and if i flick gunn my cable channel 28 espn if i flick it on and the games not there i have no idea where to go i i don't know what fox sports net i don't know what nbc's i mean maybe now because the epl yet but that just shows the value of premier content so you're tapping into validation of sports psyche by espn over let's come out of the gate with amazon i would have some component if i was the commissioner of this this lacrosse league i would like to see some component of my broadcast scheduled one game a week a guy i don't care on a dominant platform and then supplement with a nontraditional broadcaster we it by the way we try fun things i want microphones on players yet a you get this is like what the flag football league is doing right now i gotta garrison volume absolutely have unwashed the thirty for 30 bit on why the xfl failed but apparently it's it's really wonderful and they talk about their certain strategies out of the gates were now had they tweaked it here and there it the biggest one was was not getting a town but that that the game wasn't very good and they underscore that by how much press say got around he hate me.

"The sports for knack somewhere to use the term sports fan what you would hear with d well it's uh it's it's not a real it's a sports but disclaimer that always came ask you that because people who were using the term recognized it wasn't a true funny uh the problem was people unfamiliar with the term actually her yeah which was the case with my general surgeon who had worked at and then that's where all the confusion about the challenge with referencing athletic two thousand in the public meaning it's that people just aren't comfortable using that term so i speak core muscle repair even that's a little bit longer to say i think in my line of work it's worked pretty well because people have heard about core muscles now more and more ridiculous but worked in the course so i think it conjures up an image that people can relate to even if they don't know all the nuances that it but they get it like oh it's a poor hustles and bought a debt where that is and it is by and large predominantly a muscular injury so i've seen the sports media start to transition over and i'm seeing it reference that's the core muscle injury or a procedure to fix it call the core muscle repair more and more especially in the last couple of years points relating to that one is going to uh to function out there really just the way interpreters there uh there seems to be from from my perspective in terms of uh that term uh becoming accepted.
