"Of my aim for buying it in the end, followed by trying to talk to Sal wakata. And buck gets into a lot of the move from Fox to ESPN, how his first year calling Monday Night Football is going. Gets into his relationship with Troy Aikman, differences between Fox and ESPN get into Thursday Night Football, how Al Michaels is doing, calling a horrible schedule, and a lot of other things with Joel and a lot of Tom Brady stuff and how Tom will do as a play by player and Joe possibly if he would have stayed at Fox working with Brady, so we get into all that. Before we get to the episode and the interviews, make sure you check out recent SI media podcast if you haven't listened. Great run of guests lately. That's the worst introduction I've ever had today. I just, you know, 20 years at Fox. And now you're The Voice of Monday Night Football. It was a different 28. Well, the NFL you did for 20 with Troy. That's, well, not with Troy, yes. Yeah. Well, that's funny. But I did the NFL at Fox for 28 years, Jim. Right, right. Come on. But I'm talking about researchers in that. The package of you and Troy, which is moved on. The package. Yeah. Yes. You know, I'm just gonna warn you right now. And I'm gonna warn your listeners. I'm coming in sleep deprived. There is just, I'm probably gonna get fired for what is about to be said on this podcast. I'm gonna let everything hang out for you, Jimmy trainer. So just be prepared 'cause I'm worn out. "Multiple multiple teams. Okay. Dual team. Practice. That's one way to put it. Hey, by the way, birdo just walked into studio with a full on Mexican ensemble of food. Like this feels like you're like, we're a mariachi band away from having a full blown Mexican restaurant. That's not racist at all. No, it's not. That's not racist at all. That was real bad. What are you talking about? You got tortillas. But why we gotta have a Marriott. Yeah, so I walk in with a chapoy bag. Next thing I know there has to be a myriad. Yeah, that's why I wash back. Chipotle don't count. Sorry. Wow. That's cool. You get messed up. You guys aren't from knocks narrow. You don't know it's like, man. Chipotle, please. Come on, man. Chipotle's not the real deal. Yeah, that right there is the real deal. If you're telling me Steve Elle's. Okay, who founded chipotle Mexican grill? If you're trying to tell me he is not a man of the people, I don't know what to tell you that. Well, if Steve ells, if his last name ended. Steve ells. If it ended with a Z I'm just that we'd be talking. Clearly you guys don't know that. Then he's got the heritage of Steve elves. Yeah. Alas. Alas, maybe, but Elle is not a no, man. Look it up. Yeah. It smells great though. I mean, birdo's a fantastic cook. This does smell good. How many are you going to have? No, just eat right now. Who cares? No, no. Come on, man. I got you. Wait, I'm excited. I'll tell you guys about it on the other side of the breakfast. So how about the fact that the NFL is now scheduling starting next year, according to sports business journal, the NFL is now going to be having Black Friday games. So if you're wondering, hey, when's the NFL second? That's what they call me. Immediately thought the same exact thing, right? Why? Or in the words of rob Parker, every Friday's Black Friday for me. Yeah, so he said it. That's actually a pretty good run. It is. That's it really is how he said it. But so we've been waiting to see. All right, are they going to make the move to Friday? Now, because there's an agreement in place. I think the high school football. They don't want to play nighttime games to take away from high school football. But it is going to be an afternoon game on Black Friday. And then after next year, you love Santa. It's going to become it's going to become a yearly tradition. Black Friday. It's real out here. It's a Black Friday. What's up Black Friday? Black. So.

"Hi everyone. Welcome to another episode of office hours with the professor, as always, I'm your host, William, the professor collis, and basically as always, I'm going to say that this week's office hours is a little bit different or unique. I feel like I say that every week. But a story that I think deserves celebrated. And a story that I think deserves celebrating for a relatively straightforward reason. But one that I think is very important for eSports and our industry. So let's get right into it. What story did I pick this week? And I think it's probably going to surprise you. I picked a story actually. I bumped into in sports business journal. They had an article Grubhub's feeding frenzy feasted on fans, and that has to do with the fact that Grubhub was very pleased with the results of their feeding, frenzy, marketing campaign, that they hosted in conjunction with the LCS. Why did you want this to be your office hour story? And the answer is because sometimes guys, it's about the basics and doing the basics well. And I really looked at this feeding frenzy promotion that Grubhub executed. And it really just looked like the basics of marketing done well for eSports. And I thought that was worth calling out that not every major marketing event in games and gaming has to be some renaming of a team or some multiyear epic partnership that sometimes just good basic marketing activation, holding to some simple principles can have great results. And I think that's what we saw with the feeding frenzy at Grubhub. So you might ask, okay, well, what is the basic stuff that they did? Well, let me tell you. Under this feeding frenzy banner, they played some games of league, right? And get it, you know, feeding, feeding, ha ha ha. So they had some tenuous connections to sort of games and gameplay. They ate some food, for example, there was a chicken wings eating competition. They paired these broadcast activities with events taking place at the tournament itself. And they paired all of this with sort of general consumer activation opportunities like a promo code for free delivery. Free wings, through buffalo wild wings, different things like that. And all of this was undergirded by consistent prominent Grubhub branding. It pops up everywhere. You can't miss it. Whether it's a delivery bag on a Caster's desk or a pinned announcement on YouTube. It's pretty clear who is sponsoring this, why and what it's about, food delivery. And that's what I loved. That's what I loved. It's just wonderful to see an eSports activation that is pretty much basic marketing done right and done well. And I think the lesson here, as I set up front, is it's no wonder in my mind that Grubhub saw some good results here because they hit the basic block and tackling of marketing over the head. They had multiple touch points for the consumer, a clear call to action about what you were going to do, AKA order with Grubhub and a promo code. Clear branding to reinforce everything. And enough of a tie to the events and the product itself that it didn't feel forced, right? No one saying this is the most clever marketing campaign of all time, right? There's not some amazing gimmick or surprise celebrity. This is just a great piece of fun basic marketing done well. And I thought that needed to be celebrated. And I think more companies need to remember that you can activate any sports in a low touch or traditional way, but when you do it, do it right, do it like grump. So that's this week's story. I give it a solid B plus. Sorry to grab hub. It's not an a because, you know, we do want to save those first some of the really crazy out of the box stuff because obviously if you can do something really innovative, that is worth celebrating that is something you should push for. But this is a great B plus story. It's great traditional marketing and I was super happy to see it done well in eSports. So thank you for joining this week's episode of office hours and I'll see you all next week..

"A little bit more of a sense of where we stand of course with the economy of course CPI data or something that you want to have retail sales Have you been buying anything Caroline Yes and none of it's arriving So that's still a problem It's still a problem So hashtag 2021 but it lives on team All right the closing bells here on this Friday afternoon The Dow Jones Industrial Average Look it's actually going to finish higher here on the day by about four tenths of a percent though still down on the week though only fractionally by about three tenths of a percent The S&P 500 is going to finish lower by about 12 points on the day or about two tenths of a percent It's lower on a weekly basis by about 1.2% and the NASDAQ composite down about a 186 points or 1.3% on the day 3.8% here on the weekend You take a look real quickly at the Russell 2000 Some of those small caps cyclical names are never really got any kind of a bid all week long down for a fourth straight day just by about 7 tenths of a percent I can't really see that but down on a weekly basis by about 5% Carol All right remain and I've been watching the dab transports and we all have been down about 1% for the day overall Definitely off its lows though of the session but still down about 6.7% Katie for the week overall Also off its lows of financials actually having a good day If you take a look at the sector level of course energy right up top there but financials also making a run for it They had a horrible week ending on a different note ahead of earnings On the downside like we were saying you have semis you have the chip makers down there You also have tech broadly and it's a really nice even split and that's exactly what's weighing on the broader benchmarks Carol Yeah I'm looking forward to what the financials have to say next week Let's see if it's as down as investors have been kind of almost anticipating It feels like in terms of the trade Hey let's get to some of the gainers discovery up about 6% near its highs of the day rallying sports business journal noting that the discovery WarnerMedia deal could close today so I've been kind of watching and I hot and I head You did this like yesterday or the day before I did it I did use a decline here like all over this right I used a patient You know this is down significantly since May 17th when it was announced last year It's been under a ton of pressure and it'll be interesting to see what their streaming strategy is if they bring it all together Yeah I kind of like these media companies you know Gonna put that out there E Pam systems Yeah Epam systems We talk about this a lot We have really over the last month or so or since the war in Ukraine began It finished up more than 10% in today's session It's still down more than 50% so far this year But late yesterday after the close we heard that the company has begun the process of exiting its operations in Russia in phases over the next three months Big IT is outsourcing company They've got about or they've had 14,000 employees in Ukraine and they know the CEO under some criticism early on for not being critical critical if you will of Russia One more cotera energy and E and P company top in the NASDAQ 100 up more than 7% in today's session Mizuho raising its price target to 44 from 38 a share The stock closing at 28 and changed him All right let's get to some of the notable decliners today starting with Tesla among the worst performers on a point spaces in the S&P 500 and in the NASDAQ 100 finished the down and even 3% today There was a lot of Tesla news but no real catalyst to send it lower It was lower by about 5% this week We got some clarity on dates about the Tesla semi the CyberTruck the roadster at last night's event but it's Sean o'kane Was that clarity He told us take it with a grain of salt because we've heard this story before especially when it comes to those robo taxis right I mean flashback to like 2018 Who's the market leader in EVs Can I just ask Yeah teslas I mean look 310,000 deliveries in the first quarter of the year but still Yeah All right it's a little bit of selling Eventually gets there It's just a little tortured the process Robinhood shares taking a big hit today down 6.9% This after Goldman Sachs cuts it to sell from neutral saying that softening retail engagement levels and profitability concerns will likely limit any outperformance Shares are down more than 80% from its highs of August just following its IPO And then I want to take a look at shares of Starbucks as we wrap up Howard Schultz's first full week on the job back on the job for a third time for a third time I should say finish lower every single day this week finishing the week down by over 10% down 1.9% today as he really outlined his plan to work on labor relations as the company works to works with employees as it faces union station efforts around the country Yeah many wanting to unionize Meanwhile of course Starbucks also feeling some commodity price pressure as you see coffee beans continuing to be relevant relatively elevated I'm looking across the commodity sector when you go global macro movers for our radio audience I'm looking quite a mixed picture for once we actually saw a bit of a bounce back in oil but look we're only at a $102 a barrel now for Brent only I say WTI crew $97 a barrel almost 98 This as we're actually sort of erasing a lot of what have been the rally higher in oil since the invasion of Russia of Ukraine by Russia Now this is as we start to worry more perhaps about some of the slowdown in China what the impacts of of course the COVID surge over there are having what we really do in terms of the buying strike that we start to see when he hits such elevated levels So all pushes down for a second week but we see it just higher on the day I'm looking at iron ore off by 2.4%.

"I don't know. Kim Delaney stayed as long as he did because he was very good at his job. And he made his members a lot of money and he kept them happy. And the Big Ten is going to make a lot of money in a couple of years, no matter who the Krishna is because their TV deals coming up and they're going to make a fortune. They've already made a fortune for an even bigger fortune. It came out this week in sports business journal that this is not a fact, but analysts believe they could go from 440 million a year right now to a billion in 2020 four. That seems optimistic to me, but they're going to make a lot. And but what I'm saying, but Kevin Warren's whole Jim Phillips has been kind of the villain in this because he has said that he was the only one who was just like, we're not doing this. We don't think the playoffs should expand early. We think that the college sports world should be focused more on other issues like figuring out how to regulate NIL and transfer and so philosophically we're opposed to expanding it early. Whereas Kevin Warren's only real public opposition was that he thinks the power 5 conferences should have automatic births. But that's fishy to me. I don't think that's a reason you blocked the whole playoff. And then I just don't think there's a lot of confidence in him within his own conference. Obviously he didn't handle COVID very well. But it's kind of continued beyond that. He's a complete newcomer to college athletics. And it just doesn't seem like he's figuring it out. And that's kind of the theme of this whole situation is that that working group that came up with the 12 team proposal, that was where four commissioners and three commissioners and AD, who have been doing this for a long long time. And the people who sprouted up in opposed it are people who are two people who are fairly new to being a commissioner and George Cleo Cox kind of playing both sides and saying, you know, we support anything, but he's also trying to stick up for the rose bowl and there's complications there. So it's just a, I think that complete distrust between the older guard commissioners and the newer people. Yeah, I don't know how I don't know how you meant that. I think it takes time. I mean, so you asked it to me and I copped out and basically said, oh, 50 50, what percent chance would you give the Kevin Warren still the commissioner in the Big Ten in four years from now? 25. That's a smaller number. I should probably look up on how long his contract is before making that prediction, but. Also, I mean, to have an expanded playoff in 2026, those discussions are going to begin probably two years before that. And so I would give a better chance he's still a commissioner then. But let's think about this. If you're starting from scratch in today's the Big Ten can't not be in the playoffs. You know, at some point, you have to listen to your own fans. And I don't think Big Ten fans. I don't think there's many Big Ten fans left who cling to the old days of we just want to go to the rose bowl, have a big impact 12 rose bowl. Certainly allow state fans aren't that way. They want to go win national championships. So I can't see him like opposing a playoff entirely. He say it should only be 8. Would he continue to be all over the power 5? I don't know, all I know is that there are 11 parties and 8 of them were fully on board with the format that they came up with in June. And then you had the ACC blocking at philosophically the Big Ten holding onto AQ's and the pack 12 trying to look out for the Roosevelt. So you would think the parties with the most leverage will lead the discussion for what's next. Hey, on this similar subject. The alliance and the number of Big Ten games played in the Big Ten calendar and the conference. Jean Smith, who's probably as powerful an AD as there is certainly in that conference and one of the most powerful aedes in college sports. Talked about his preference on that in terms of like they're not going to go to 8 games if they're at 9. My read on this is, you know, we in the media, certainly at the athletic and other places, hyped up the alliance quite a bit. You know, and remember they did not have a contract. I remember actually asking that on the conference call. It's like, yeah, we're looking at each other in the eye and yeah, okay, good luck with that, right? But whatever we're like 5 months past that or 7 months past that. Do you think that thing got overblown quite a bit? I think it was, I don't think it was overblown because it's not every day that three conferences banned up to basically get back at the SEC, but it always didn't make a lot of sense. And it always seemed kind of, I mean, the fact that there was no signature on anything and that we looked at each other's eyes. It always seemed a little shaky and I think this week you saw the first signs that it's falling apart. It was not a good week for the first time. So your answer is yes. You basically just did a Gary barter there. You did Gary Bart at work. You said no and that you said one thing in the your answer completely told the real truth. Well, you said, was it overblown by the media? As in, should the media have just ignored that they were doing this thing? I don't think we should have ignored it, but it was, it was touted as something like it was going to be a lot more of a, of a significant thing. And I don't think it's going to be particularly significant. I could be wrong, but it just like it seemed very amorphous and vague and yeah, they're coming together. I don't know exactly what this means. And I'm still don't know what it means. It just feels less weighty than it did before. Yeah, I just feel like I feel like it was overhyped. And I'm not saying any one person over hyped it. I just think it was, you know, it.

It's time to go down the road to the breeders and to do that. I welcome in dora. Delgado who has played an integral role with the success of the breeders cup since the very inception. She is with me now. This past week she received a very special honour being named the sports business. Journal's prestigious game-changer list or being named to that list and it is a fantastic honor. She's with me now. Dora doug otto game changer with the breeders cup. Good morning door. Getting we mike. Thanks for having me. You know. I mentioned the fact that that game changer and people are listening going okay. Well what does that mean. Why is that such a big deal. Well game changers recognizes women that are in senior leadership roles across different sports businesses. Women that have broad deep and very responsibilities and oversight and contribute to the success of the industry in multiple ways. And i'm reading it exactly as it was in the press. Release their dora. I said this at the beginning of the show. You check all those boxes. Yeah it was It really kind of came out of left field. I wasn't wasn't expecting it. I had i known i'd been nominated. But you know to be honest these Sports business journal. They've really focus on the professional sports. Nfl nba Mlb in a soccer. This whole nine yards to have thoroughbred racing included in there and then to have me selected. It was just an incredible honor. And i do feel that you know. I've spent forty years in the business. you know nearly all of it with the breeders cup and You know this. Our product is just a constantly evolving. Wonderful amalgamation of Stakes races in championship races and nominations and brandy and television marketing. Like if it all pulls together and you've got to keep it fresh and you've gotta you've gotta keep innovating all the time so often and you bring up a great point so often we will hear people say that thoroughbred racing is not a major sport. The way major league baseball is or the nfl or the nba. Whatever the situation might be but as you said. Sports business journal typically focuses on those other major sports and to now have breeders cup and horse racing recognized legitimizes. The fact that yeah. You know what this is considered to be a major sport and and you know the the industry has made such progress over the last couple of years You know everybody was saying you know. The racine is is dying sport. Nobody's paying attention. But you know when everybody was stuck at home for for all of twenty twenty You know they were looking for anything to be entertained. By and thoroughbred racing with it you know non stop action and the gambling aspect just really had had a surge in popularity A wagering numbers were up and people were tuning in and watching and We were able to stay. Nimble and take advantage of some television opportunities with a lot of other events getting cancelled that really allowed racing to pop into those television spot and get in front of a national audience door. You mentioned that you have been involved in the sport for nearly forty years. You been in the position of breeder with breeders cup for thirty eight years since its inception What are some of the most significant changes that you have noticed over the past four decades or so as it applies to breeders cup. Sure will you know. Obviously when we when we first got started. The the the the idea was you know one big championship day of racing. Ten million dollars in purses seven races declared in a divisional champs. Which was you know an unqualified success. But the you know. Success breeds success. The more you do the more you're really expected to do the more you need to do. So you know we quickly evolved By two thousand seven into a two day event We're now up to thirty one million dollars in purses we we transitioned our initial stakes program. Which was just putting money on on racist for nominated horses which was great and it was a super benefit to those owners and breeders but it didn't really connect those racist to the breeder stop so also in two thousand seven. We launched this breeders cup win. And you're in challenge series which was just such a simple concept you know you win and you're in and and it it eliminated The entry fees eliminated having to be selected by the panel provider travel awards and You know they say you know the most sincere form of flattery is if people trying to copy you not that winning you're in concept Has been has been tried to be duplicated and lots of other places Fortunately we own it so we have to. We have to constantly kinda defend that but that was an important change in the program. We disbanded the european breeders fund cross registration agreement in two thousand ten which had provided a vehicle forgetting international. Foles into the program. But it wasn't it wasn't only it was only getting about twelve hundred a year or so I created the international stallion Nomination program which opened the doors up to nearly every Country in the world. And now we get about twenty one thousand and twenty two thousand eligible foals each year so that that just helps more people be able to participate more more owners be able to run and and everybody enjoy the sport now door doug otto you are considered a game changer in sports in general. Not just in horse racing certainly in horse racing but in sports in general with this newest acknowledgement and newest honor. When you think back on these thirty eight years what are a couple of the things that you're probably most proud of that you and the team have been able to accomplish. I think honestly our efforts and thoroughbred health and safety Security i'm most proud about Our leadership in those areas we were the first organization and racing to have out of competition testing A nationwide program developed at its current juncture. We test one hundred percent of the horses that run with us in the months leading up to the breeders cup. A hundred percent of the trainers have at least one horse in their barn tested. These tests are looking for out of competition. prohibited substances things like performance enhancing medications or treatments that are not allowed within twelve months of racy. And so that that program. I'm especially proud of. We've got a wonderful Dr william farmer who administers that program for us working in conjunction with regulatory stories across the world we also were the first ones to create our Event security team which is A whole league roster of officers that are assigned to horses. They monitor the the Coming and going into the stall record any medications that are administered they have a team of investigators that are highly trained professionals that oversee them they work in conjunction with the racing authority of the state. Were running in. So it's just it just brings a higher level of you know you're under your under security watch. We don't want we want to race clean. We want everybody to have a fair chance. That wonderful results are equine. Veterinary team is also brought in and We we develop that early on to make sure that because we're bringing horses in from all over the world. I mean literally all over the world or coming here to run. Some of our bets have never seen them before. We don't know how they warm up. We don't know how their usual style of of exercise is so they we bring them in a week ahead of time they get is on all these horses. They make sure that If there's anything developing that they're monitoring a special Team assigned to them if if they think there is something that might be going amiss And we just removed that horse from competition. If there's any doubt at all so these are. These are the things that i'm really proud of. We've we of course were one of the founding members of the thoroughbred safety coalition which has done really meaningful reforms across the country In terms of of health and safety and We're working with this With the new. Hi sta the horse. Racing integrity and safety act has passed through congress and is now going to be implemented by july of next year. These are all really important. Things that are helping to make sure our sport States have the forces stay.

"Specifically the boardroom for thirty five ventures the purposes that kevin and i enjoy working together. We share a lot of the same visions in respect. The ones that we don't share wanna help each other. Bring them to life and we enjoy doing this and we have fun. Doing this and basketball drives it but you know now we have the fortunate having our hands in so many things that the mission is to keep building something special and unique to us to create a great opportunities for tons of people that you know that we know. We want to impact And then in terms of boardroom. I think that there is a real need for this platform in the beginning. I thought that there was going to be an appetite for it. I felt like there was going to be a response to it. That was that this was something interesting. This conversation that a lot of people are sports fans may not have been aware about like what really was happening in the world of sports and business in the culture around it but what. I didn't realize what a need there was for. How many young entrepreneurs in young people in general and just people that are connected to sports and entertainment and media. Everything happening right now in this like insane emerging economy and all of the different things that are happening in the sports world was people really didn't have a very relatable cooil and informative place to get that info there was drips and drabs of it on espn and forbes and sports business journal but somebody authentically was delivering the world off the court off the field in the things that happened. The players the speed the momentum the company's investments all of what's exciting and when it all took off because of the pandemic our platform was aligned to grow with it and it was very authentic as kadian ivy at thirty five benchers. We're living in it and with the boardroom. So you'll have a website where you publish articles related to sports business. You also have a couple podcast one of which you host evan newsletter and then you also have videos and produce shows in the past. I imagine there are more shows in the pipeline. But you describe it as a platform whereas i would have described it as a media company. Is there a reason you describe it as a platform and not a media company. I mean to be honest. Nope mad as an entrepreneur struggled to be fair. And i think that it's cool that you point that out because i think that when you're building something in growing something you so many different buzzwords and he can't really be scared to change it up at times but there is a point in which you do have to kind of like a line internally and make sure that the world understands what you are because that consistency is important. And i think we're at that inflection point where we really are trying to discover. Is this a brand. Is this something that lives off. Line online this is a media network. That's just delivering content. And for me i say platform because i think it's position to be all of it you know and i think there is some some part of it. That's a lifestyle that i think especially in college. Kids can really relate to which is like cut a non traditional entrepreneurial path that a lot of young people want to take to be able to do it and not just swing for the fences or do do it recklessly. but to realize that there's like a path even in this nontraditional In the nontraditional journeys of so many of these entrepreneurs But i think to maybe to an older demographic that is also consuming. Our brand is more of immediate network. It is more of the podcast and our newsletter. But you know listen man. I probably should figure out which word. I'm going to land on because i think that the end of the day you know you'll. I'm sure you've heard this other people you speak to. Is that like when you're building something. It's the most incredible fun time. And you don't know people are gonna like it and you're trying things out on your saying things and then sometimes you step back and you think to yourself like well like why is this even important like who the hell knows right. But then all of a sudden tim's interviewing you and he says to you what you said platform and i say media network and it makes you realize how important all of these things are. When you're building something how important like uniformity amongst your team and how you presented. Because that's all you got in. That's all people are going to really take. They're not going to understand the context in which you're building something they don't care so thanks for pointing out this boy in our business right now. That could speaking of the context. In which you're building the boardroom. So before the boardroom. There was thirty five media. Dc is the boardroom a continuation. Or like thirty five media turn into the boardroom. Or the board room star and thirty. Five media stopped now. To be honest. Thirty five media was just the name of the company before we changed the thirty five ventures because law ventures sounds like venture capital for us. Just means we're doing so many different ventures you know whether it was a a media network or building boardroom or things we've invested in that no one has heard of Even products in business that we start for kevin you know these are all different ventures at we're embarking on so that's kind of what thirty five ventures is. I know it's a bit confusing. But i'm okay with that. Because i believe in that long boardroom was just an evolution of us wanting to have a voice Knowing we had a voice but as wanting to have our take in our point of view on the sports world now what was happening in the culture around the sports world and there were so many great digital media brands. Both in and out of sports i was subscribe to whether it was complex. Business insider on erupted seeing how those brands and platforms being built. Something that i knew. I could do wanted to do but i also knew that it was very much an oversaturated market and it was very much constantly evolving and something that. I'm a strong believer. That people don't put enough emphasis on actually learning doing the work. So i also knew. I couldn't just become a media. Guide sent the way the world works. I was an entrepreneur. And i was a manager and i do things but i just said you know. What if we're going to do this. Then let's do something that's authentic in. That's us and it really happened that way and it's why we didn't raise money to build it. It's why we built it. Very slowly added different parts of it. Because i was very aware of how crowded the landscape was and that i had to do this. Very organically because why why. Go to another one. There's nothing that people see. That's like the first of its kind because we see everything they were all numb to all of this but you have to get people to really buy into what it is and understand. Believe like why they should log on and listen and read or just clicked through. You know all of it and that i knew was going to take time for me. That was the evolution of boredom like perfectly embodied katie. And i and i read somewhere. I think it might have been a slam. Online article that the birth of boardroom was all star weekend. Nba all star weekend twenty eighteen. Was it the. The new format of the game was being in. La was was was it fergie's national anthem that sparked the idea for the boardroom. How did it come about no while. The thing was kevin and i have very deep conversations. That's kind of the nature of our relationship and friendship in why we are able to have such a good time working out what we work on because we talk through these things in it. Become like nothing but We're only countable. Ourselves is how we look at it. You know so. We're not gonna start something that doesn't feel good because no one's telling us to and the only response that we have is. I have to be the best manager for kevin in terms of us running a business. We can't create something. That's not real to us will never do that. What happened when i was sick. This all star party was funny. I was at Peter guber house pat riley was their budget was like a brunch on a sunday and it was powerful room. It wasn't as many players in their blues powerful owners executive and now i'm forty.

"We will at back to the reilly. Auto parts bit reporters along allen cavanna from the positive regression. Podcast adam stern from the sports business journal. Mcmillan glad to have you with us. A couple of guys named gordon as i said in the news this week. First of all alan jeff gordon. I don't think it's a big surprise that it was announced He is going to be leaving fox. After this season. I mean the fox main part of their season basically over. But we've all known he was in line to really kind of take over things at hendrick motorsports and he's going to be basically the number to guide hendrick under rick and so we hate to see him leave the booth but we certainly understand his duties at hendrick and he's kind of the man going forward right. Yeah i mean you knew it was coming at some point. I didn't think it would be this quick. And i think it's just a loss for a lot of people who enjoyed the first half of the season because i think the pair duo bringing clint boyer in kind of may jeff gordon a better broadcaster. Only in that had another driver to talk to a contemporary. And clint boyer could be the show. While jeff gordon could be the ninety three race four-time champion right ninety three race winner. Four time champion and kind of take some of the pressure off of being the entertainment as well right. It was a good balance with the three of them. So i thought. Jeff gordon shine especially this year and we only got one year of it so that part was unfortunate but i think he likes the direction of team hendrick right now and and the four young championship. Were they drivers. So i think he was in a good winning position no matter what he picked as you look at it to adam. Your thoughts i on on gordon stepping away from the booth and maybe your feelings or what. You're hearing rumblings of how they make fill that spot or do they think allen's exactly right from the perspective of you know we ended up doing what five six years i mean. Obviously when when you look at guys transitioning from broadcasts from from their playing days broadcasting. Sometimes you envision boy this be year career thirty year rear. So maybe this was a little bit quicker than than some people thought it would be on at the same time. If you remember back you know. He retired after fifteen. He signed a three year. Deal from sixteen to eighteen with fox was his original deal. He looked at leaving aftermath original deal and then he ended up signing the extension nineteen through twenty one this year and You know to own. I don't know if it's because their performance. Well i tend to think it actually would have happened regardless. And maybe if they were not running well might even had to happen quicker So i think this was really coming. I think you know he didn't talk about as much. But i think even on top just being on the team side. He's probably not going to have to travel quite as much Things like that now. Because i'm sure he'll still be at the race track a lot but it will be quite as Ours half of the year when he literally or to be there every week and then obviously he just has us competitive juices that he wants to be involved with the team side. I think will still be interesting to see. There was some talk that this was kind of revealed as the succession plan. But it really wasn't because in my opinion a lease because we actually really don't know for example. You know marshall carlson. That's team president. Is rick hendrick son-in-law so who really will run handwrite one hundred percent long term. I don't know exactly. And i don't know of anyone knows that this is really made that public. It just said jeff. Gordon is taking on a new role as vice chairman. He's going to be really leading things on a day to day perspective alongside. Rick is not going away yet And so i think it really really interesting how it plays out clearly. There's a big move for jeff and I just think as far as who has replaceable. Be i haven't heard yet. Obviously i've got a couple of natural in-house replacements Like jamie mcmurray are going back to larry mcreynolds so clearly you would think they start there But can they go. Try and find a home. Run my understanding. Is they've been trying to find home runs. But i don't know if those hormones are going to happen and You look at guys who already at different networks or you look at a guy like heaven. Aric who had been rumored you know to wanna go to the booth. And she'd been inside that barry long essentially with s jar mean. His deal is up on twenty three. I don't think he's going anywhere. So i think they might have to look in house eventually if they wanna keep remem- booth but We'll have to see exactly what the decision is. As i have not heard or understood yet say how it plays out alan good. No i mean it's how it's impossible to replace ninety three wins and four championships. The face of the sport for for well more than a decade. That is going to be a heavy lift to replace that. I don't envy the executives at fox. Obviously who. I worked with back in the day but How do you replace the resume of jeff gordon. The name recognition of jeff gordon. That is going to be tough. And i don't envy who has to come in and sort of fill that void because ultimately the broadcasting side of it will win out but at initially no one's going to have a comparable resume. So maybe you start there and just say look. We're there's no way we're going to compare resumes here but we'll bring in the best possible. Broadcasters that's what has to happen for television makes a lot of sense. Let's talk about the other guy named gordon and get your thoughts on this adam as todd. Gordon has announced that he's going to retire at the end of the year championship winning crew. Chief joy lugano now the crew. Cheaper ryan blaney. I'm almost wondering adam if this is the beginning of may i'm not gonna say a mass exodus for crew chiefs but if this is the beginning of something we're going to see a few more of these before the end of the year especially with this new car coming on online next year. I mean these guys are going to have to throw out all the books they've got because they're going to be useless after this year and for guys have been around for a while. They made us be going this. This is a good time to step away. Definitely and when you look at what todd gore and said you know he also noted that the pandemic played into just from the perspective of a gave him new perspective And so. I think obviously it is a big time of transition. The obviously we've had a big transition as as a world and as a country but certainly you're right. Obviously next year is a big year started with the next generation car. I think obviously there's two ways to look at it. You know some guys might be looking at is the perfect time to go away. There might be some other guys like occurred bush for example. If you talk about drivers crew chiefs her saying i might actually stick around for another year or two and see how this new car go. So i'm not sure yet. I think you might be right that we could see that trend. But i just don't know we'll have to see how plays out and what to see where. Todd gordon goes. You didn't really say what he was doing So is he going to find another role in the or elsewhere outside of team penske or is he. Getting outside of altogether will be interesting to see. Yeah it really isn't an allen under that. You've you've worked with todd gordon over the class guy always very open to talking to you and I visit. I always thought one of the great guys to talk to but i certainly understand when you start talking about family and spending more time at home. The hours these crew chiefs put in on the cup level is just unbelievable. Oh yeah and we heard him to you know in his interviews this week. He talked about his daughters. I think he sees his family his parents a lot at the track. But you know to spend time with them away from the track is all a positive thing and look he's he's a daytona five hundred winning championship pointing many race winning crew chief. That's hard to replace. And it's going to be a big deal. A penny think of all the changes. We obviously the reports. Brad kozlowski leaving austin syndrich coming over. Now you need..

"It's you know a mix of factors just starting with the there was hype going into that meghan markle prince harry interview like that's juicy. Stop people. that's people magazine. That's page six. Sorta stuff people want to see what he's going to say. There was kind of explosive stuff coming out of that. That's why it drew a sunday night. Football type of number. What you didn't have for the grammy's and why i don't why it drew a record low. While is down fifty one percent from last year. There was no hype. There's no red carpet. There's just no you know. Forget the pun jazz around. The you know the grammy's and that's why i mean you could decade ago. It was like forty million viewers. And you plus three quarters of your audience. Do i think that's going to increase once you have built up in red carpet and you're back into normal flow. Yeah do. I think it's going to get back to forty million. It was a decade now. Of course not but. I think they're still if you are alive. Like the grammys at the oscars are like the You know whatever words you want to insert in there. There is still an audience for that and if you look at the top one hundred telecasts every year. They are still going to rank in there in a normal year. You're still going to have the thanksgiving day parade. you're still gonna have the oscars you're still going to have the grammy's still going to have the emmys but it's always going to be those live. There still drawing better than any other scripted broadcast. Joe's gonna do yeah. Granted i think maybe. Ncis maybe even beat. The grammys or one of those shows. Beaded that night. It is but see that that right there shows. I think how much age is a factor in all this because i would think that the people who the grammy's would cater to. Who are the fans of taylor. Swift and wop and harry styles. These people don't know what a television is their whole lives have been streaming. So you know and then you say. Ncis still draws a number yet because those people who are watching it are seventy and over and they don't know anything about streaming and then there's no tv so it's it's amazing to see how age is a huge factor in all this. Because i use it. The grammys are never getting back to big ratings when the show is going to feature showcase artists who appeal to people. Don't watch tv. I mean i'm worried about the oscars number coming up here because there have been no movies. Why do i wanna watch an award. Show for industry really didn't produce anything right. That's having an nba awards show where they didn't have a season. I don't ask don't see the you know. Maybe they should have cancelled. But there's still some interest in having that. I don't run that sort of thing. There's still going to go ahead with it. But i mean you can pretty much pencil it in and it's going to be a record low number. I hope they don't at least do the usual five our show. This should be two hours in and out. We have not had the movie theaters open for year..

"Nhl going back with espn Last week or the week before got a lot of attention which i thought was interesting because even when is been had the nhl. They didn't really seem to care about hockey that much. Obviously they'll care about it a lot more now that they have it back and i thought the nhl got a ton of money for a sport that does not generate big ratings. What did you make of that deal. I like it i like the nhl on espn. I think it gives visibility sport At a time when it does need it here especially here in the united states. You know to keep up with the joneses and makes sense that they're getting ahead of the curve on putting allowed. These games on espn plus. It's where a lot of these regular season games are going to be headed. Across a number of properties. They're just there kind of at the forefront if you want In the nhl is in terms of big leagues. Going over there. It's not you know the patriot league. This is the nhl gay. This is one of the big sports in the world. And it's putting a lot of games a lot of its regular season behind the table on the digital property and espn like we've talked about. Wants the populate that with content to get subscribers in their they're attracting subscribers and that disney bundle with hulu helps but they'll they want to start getting more and more sports fans and hockey fans are die hards and if they're gonna wanna watch it they're going to have to get on. Espn plus for a lot of those games. Yeah i don. I i hope every. Nhl fan understands it. I mean they're putting seventy five exclusive games on. Espn plus that means. Not you know your local team in your local market will not be on your local channel. It'll be on. Espn plus those games. And i think you know. I get why the you know i totally away. Spn is doing this. They're all about espn plus right now. I was still surprised. They paid as much. I thought the number was pretty high. But i guess if you need all that content for his pm plus you you're gonna have to fork over some cash. They're investing in in the digital strategy. Means you got to fork over some cash. And you know let some properties go in recent years and maybe they didn't pay as much as they thought they might have for the nfl. So you know there's room in there but You know two zero like we've talked about some of this zero-some game..

Last week hulu united states one Spn disney seventy five exclusive games nhl Espn plus zero Nhl two a ton of money Espn espn plus week plus espn

"You are seeing upticks there. It's just that linear tv aspect it. There's not as much specialty casual fan interest right now and i sent it anecdotally like you do it. The avid sports fan is still. There is just we need to get back into a a rhythm almost hate to say it but there needs to be kind of a hamster wheel sort of thing going on. We are back in our daily lives and we're not there yet and sports is a relaxed station from that for a lot of people even Especially on a casual basis and may be year maybe two years before we get back into that sort of rhythm where we see what the numbers actually are. Settling in yeah. I had no idea that the regular tournament wasn't starting until friday until a few days ago. A lot of people are going to try to turn it on me like this is just the first four. Yeah And college i. It's interesting because this does this. What i'm about to say doesn't make sense logically. But i think this will turn out to be the case. I think the ratings will be terrible visit. College basketball has become a niche sport. People are still in the middle of the pandemic been down. So why should this be different. But i think you're gonna get some insane numbers for the for the gambling but vandals then the and the draft kings and all that stuff because that seems to be getting bigger and bigger and bigger and the tournament is people at home watching it. There is a pandemic of some people. Still aren't going out. You know. And i think people are going to be betting on those apps in record numbers for the tournament. I do think so. I think that in the bedding only gonna to continue to get bigger as it gets not just adoption in more states but will option. Creating brick and mortar is nice. But i don't. I don't think that's the key for sports. It's being able to sit on your couch. I don't i don't need to go to. I don't drive two hours somewhere from charlotte to go sit in a sports book. I want to go to sit on my couch and enjoy it and be able to you know. Oh it's halftime. i'm gonna make a second-half bed on any sort of game. That'll be the key for for sports fans but other he's going to be lower. I mean likely. Yeah just looking at like you said all these market properties across the landscape and it's the ncaa tournament time. But despite i mean they're not being tournament last year. Maybe that does help that. There's some build up especially amongst college basketball fans that while. We haven't seen this in a while. Yeah moist thank god. it's back. Maybe the weekend numbers are are a little Maybe those are the same maybe or at least comparable to what they have been in previous years. But i'm curious to see what kind of audience they draw monday. Or the first and the first couple rounds. Yeah it'll be interesting monday. That'll be a day. Where i think people are home now more than a you know pre pandemic so. Maybe that'll help them on that monday but That office that out of office. The out of home number in particular is going to get killed i. It did for the super bowl. It's going to get killed for people gathering at bars for march madness games..

Owner of Washington Justice Expresses Interest in CDL Expansion Spot

"So yesterday A lot of my argument for why the CDLs jump in viewers wasn't big enough was the massive by ends. It takes to get into the league and I stand by that argument but that doesn't mean that people aren't still willing to pay those boxes if given the chance in all likelihood. The CDL probably would have expanded this past off-season had it not been for the pandemic. That was the timeline the o w l hit twelve teams year one expansion 220 in Year to all week Adam started the sports Business Journal reported that there is mutual interest between the CDL and the owners of the Washington Justice in the o w l to place a team in DC of the 12 CDL teams. Most came from the dead. Ownership groups as o w l teams. There are only a few that did not the Minnesota rocker backed by wise Venturi Sports. Now version one the London Broil Ravens backed by wrecked Global and the LA thieves the latest addition to the team the other nine teens, at least I'm pretty sure are all also tied to an o w l team in some way. It's all right. What's 2 take away here. Honestly in my opinion said investors are way too bullish on these leagues and I know it's not just my opinion the o w l has been on a downward trajectory for a while now and I don't think that's a controversial take investing another eight figure some into one of these franchise leagues without bringing in the established brand like optic face or thieves just feels like a really bold decision to be but on the flipside. I was super excited to see how these leagues played out when they could actually host events in the pandemic put a big chew on that after only a few weeks. Now, we are finally turning a covid-19 and there isn't really any reason I shouldn't have that same enthusiasm I had going into 2020. I really do hope these leagues succeed. It would be the single best thing that could happen for Esports. If events sold out wherever the League's win. I'm just not so confident. That's what's going to happen. I'm sure a b is focused on the year ahead. Clearly expansion is on the mind as well. We will almost certainly see a few new teams. Next year will be eight like the o w l i don't think so. But at least two to four probably going to be

"Right now stand by. We'll get a There's not much to recap, as far as the governor's president, dude, him and the lieutenant governor could have put us vote to sleep today, brother. Uh, yeah. You know how when they say you'll see like a a drug on TV, the name of it and then in parentheses, it will have like a technical name for it. Next to their names from now on in parentheses. It's a little say Ambien because every time you write, they get going, it's like I'm like, Oh, no. Like, what is that you pointed out 43 minutes into it is before that one Mention of covert numbers of good news is we're eight days below 2500 so and the way that things are plummeting. We're not gonna have a curfew As of Thursday night, I imagine he will announce that which is going to be amazing is it is crazy. What? We've been busted down to a adult men. We're going Hey on Thursday. There's not gonna be a curve you anymore. I just feel so good for for business owners. The governor will finally apparently will allow you to conduct free market capitalism again. Starting on Thursday, everybody, so we'll be dead, sir. Sit in the streets, right? Right. I mean, that's exactly how it feels. Right. You know what I mean? It is silly man. It is silly. But then they go. You know he's talking about. I guess we're yesterday We were below 2000 as far as new infections today. It's what over three a little over 3200. But it's Yeah. It's it's crushing that 21 Day average and that things down to her that one day gosh, was that sometime in December Like 11,000 cases and a day. Yeah. Yeah, or supposedly allegedly. I guess it's tough, but that's the way you have to say right if you're in broadcast, allegedly right sources say, sources Anonymous sources tell us right that we did, in fact, check. Yeah. So let me get that tail circle around on that one. I'll circle back field Jen Psaki, but it's just It's just It's amazing. I think I heard today that Yesterday when we have below 2000 was the first time since October. 88 48th of last year was the last time we had below 2000 cases. Think about all that we've been through as a society as a country since October. That's a long, long, long time ago, man. Yeah, especially. It's taken that long. And you know what? We've talked about this all along, Joshie. It's just you know how much do you really? How much do you depend on the numbers? How much do you believe about the numbers? And I guess that applies now, too. On, but I don't know how long even if they continue to dwindle. Do you think they still report him? Once we get down to like there were 112 new infections today? It's like, Oh, come on along, is it? We may remember how the scroll after 9 11. It was like, man. They've had this scroll going on the bottom of the TV screen now on every news channel for Weeks. Well, it never went away. The school never went away breaking news. Everything has been breaking news since 9 11. I imagine there will cove It is here to stay baby for the rest of our lives. I hope you're wrong. I do too. I hope you're wrong. Um, Yeah, because there yesterday towards I don't know it was toward the end of the show. I go into the office. And Brett Baer was on and he had felt Jeon and he asked Fauci. When will we be able to stop wearing masks? I mean, he's specifically asking that And felt she said that, um you know, he kept him hauling around. You could tell he did not want to give an answer for that. But then he finally does. And he says that probably there's a possibility by the end of late fall, but he goes, but there's no but that's not no guarantee. Shut up. Fauci mean, he said, late fall. This is I feel that a good chunk of society is just going to say Screw your mandate. And we're just gonna collectively by mid summer. Probably. I think you'll see people just say no, I'm done. We're not doing this anymore. You know when they tell you Especially when they say, you know what was it like 40, or 50% of the population? By mid July. I could have a vaccine and him then it's done. Just stop there, saying that's not enough herd immunity. It'll never be enough until they get 100% people inoculated and that won't ever happen because people like me exist, right, right? Yeah, You're right. It'll never be enough. You are correct. Very frustrating. Yeah, it really is. Super Bowl ratings finally are in and they're down. Yeah, This is kind of interesting, though. This might be the sign of the times moving forward, Josh. Okay, um, the Super Bowl ratings as far as the television Nielsen reporting that they're down. Um They reported that, uh, man, I'm trying to multi task here. I'm terrible. I'm sorry. There is a total audience and 96.4 million viewers that includes both online and TV viewers. And, you know, um The most releases are touting the number of TV viewers then AD online. Over top of that. So, the Sports Business Journal reported. The actual number of viewers who tuned in was 91.6 to 9 million, which is a 9% drop. From last season's 100.45 Million and the lowest TV viewership since 2006 dealer Seahawks. So then they talk about, though, that the online viewing is where it gets kind of interesting. Where is that? Okay, so It is a even if the glass is half full, they go on to say it's a larger glass than any other. So the NFL remains the broadcast leader in America but taking the largest share of a smaller pie. It's kind of how their position right The online viewership average 5.7 million viewers per minute, which is the most live streamed NFL game ever and up nearly two thirds from last year's Super Bowl, So it's interesting like one begins to kind of decline, and the other one begins going up. Online viewership is beginning to really spike. I mean, not beginning, but it's clearly for this it Zbynek um ng the way to consume this kind of a thing. I did not see any of the Super Bowl. But what? From what I understand. Is that there was just they were just beating you over the head with the Social justice message for like the four hour and a half leading into the game. And that rubbed some a lot of people the wrong way. Like dude, stop bringing everything is now political with sports. And from what my buddies were telling me, just it was. It was insufferable like they just quit watch, and they didn't turn it back on till 6 30. I guess when kickoff happened, and it was bad dude leading up because I was going back and forth watching in the desert there in Scottsdale. What is that? The Phoenix Open? Yeah. The Phoenix Open. I was watching waste management waste man, right? That's why I was kind of pausing because I couldn't remember what it was called. So I was trying to watch that and that is watching the jackets up until you know because they were on at three. And I did turn it over there in about 10 after six and you're right. It was off. Every single thing was covert. This some sort of, you know, woke message. Some sort of It was one right after another rapid fire, And I said, Boy, is this the league really missing? Their audience, and I was and by that I don't mean people that watch football. Don't care about that stuff. They don't care about it right then at least and these numbers are proving it. They're saying this. The league's move towards social injustice has had a negative impact on the ratings. And it's following suit to the way that the games are consumed. Now, do we know that's at an all time low? Yeah, No, Because what you have to take into account you go. We'll still will's 96 million people watched it on television. But you know how these Super Bowl parties go, and whether it's a Super Bowl party or God forbid you. Did. You had one this year, You know, Don't don't say it out loud. We don't want you get hauled off to the gulag where you saw the footage in Tampa. They were like super spreaders was awesome. Actually, I enjoyed seeing people like that normal people again. Yeah, but how many of those things The TV's just on. So even if it's registering that you're you've got the game on. You're not paying attention to it. You're not watching it. You're You're eating. You're drinking. You're talking. You're socializing. You're doing other stuff. The pregame lead up to that is just pure background noise and that doesn't get registered. So so just looks like you got picked up in the ratings even know what's that a 14 year? 14 year low. Yeah, correct. And then the halftime show didn't help. That was awful. It was just terrible. The weekend it was awful, and the guy spent seven million of his own money. Guys that was worth seven million of his own money is on money..

Despite Soft Launch, NRG's New Full Squad Gaming Brand Blew Up on TikTok

"Podcasting digital media and video programs. Please reach out to e-sports network CEO Mark dimmick using the email in the bio of the show the balance of power between competitive teens and gaming influencers is always interesting to look at four major sports organizations back in December energy brought out a new brand but the early growth happened naturally separate from the energy family. The first tick Tok on full Squad gaming page just says, hey, I'm Brady and this is Jennifer and Ben were on your for you page because this week we quit our jobs to start our very own gaming company. There's no mention of energy anywhere. It's also not mentioned in the bio or the logo of the tic toc Channel Energies. Is however the top comment on almost every single video on the page as they're always quick to it as you can imagine and I want to be clear. It's not like energy is hiding anything here. They just took a chance by not immediately incorporating them renamed to create a more authentic approach and it's worked out really well full Squad is over six hundred thousand followers in under one month Sports Business Journal is Adam Stern post an article yesterday and the connections between energy and full Squad gaming and that's the first major coverage in Esports. Although tube filter also wrote about this back in December energy. CEO Andy Miller said in a text to Adam Stern quotes are low-key soft large plans for FSG got turned on their head from day one. When our Tik Tok videos went viral and the full Squad account ballooned to six hundred and thirty thousand followers in the first weeks off instant audience discovering our other social platforms and our content is Off to the Races a link the article below the show. It's a good read and certain deserves credit for really highlighting these trends when other Publications were not on top of this page. Take away from this is just how insane Tik Tok is for gaming content full Squad also launched on YouTube and Instagram, but neither platform is crossed 100K yet. That's still good. Of course, but the insane following jump from Tik Tok is basically unmatched on other social platforms looking through their Tik Tok videos. There was one indication the new company had a big backer and that was the appearance of San Francisco 49ers starred in Eric Armstead scoducks. Riot Games Reportedly Shopping English Media Rights for LoL Esports

"Games has confirmed their shopping the granddaddy of all media rights deals on the trains and said the Esports minute from a sports network. The Esports minute is presented by technology game-changers. Check them out at TGC play linked below media rights deals or one of the key ways traditional sports teams and leagues earn money, but in use Sports, they are nearly as valuable accepts me for this one Riot games is reportedly shopping the English media rights deal for League of Legends Esports. Ryan has already sold the Chinese specific media rights to Billy Billy for $113 according Port now that deal was only for the worldwide events. Not for the regional leagues. I think it's fair to assume. The English media rights deals are in the same ballpark, but it's hard to tell without knowing the individual leagues that were applied to the deal if right is selling the rights to broadcast the LCS the LEC and international events in English. It will undoubtedly be the biggest media rights deal in Esports History Month. The two key players vying for the rights will be YouTube and twitch YouTube swooped the Activision Blizzard media rights from twitch before this previous season becoming the whole of the OverWatch and Call of Duty leagues. But League of Legends Esports are on another level entirely international events are the most watched streams on Twitch every single year without fail. They are also broadcast on YouTube though. It seems like ahead of the next year. It's going to be one of the other this was first reported by Travis Gafford, but confirmed by the sports Business Journal a few days ago. Now how riots used divvy up. These meteorites will shape the E Sports landscape for years to come and whoever brings most cash to the table will set themselves up with the biggest Esports product in the world bar.

Rocket League is Going Free to Play! (And to the Epic Games Store)

"Rocket League is finally going to play. I'm dreams. Is The eastwards minute? Pres anybody sports network. It's about time after songs was acquired by epic Games in May of two nineteen, it seemed like rock league was poised to move to the free to play model. That was so successful fortnight. But while rocky introduced a similar item shop, the game still cost twenty bucks. It's not a lot. Compared to traditional sixty dollar cost bowed most battle rows free to play. It still posed a hurdle. On Tuesday south six announced the game going purely free to play, and would also be adding and support a creator coats for rockabilly content creators, this huge game as well bring renewed interest as people played around. The game will pick up the sticks once again. Both the good also comes a move off steam, which may be good, too, but I'm sure. A lot of gamers are totally stoked about it. This is a long time coming, but free rock league will only be available on the epic game store while steam as a sentimental home for gamers had called Tissue Valve. Product is still a good thing especially if it means, titles are going free to play when they show up on epic for people who paid for the game. Game like me three times. They'll get every deal. See Up to the point of going to play. I was always happy to support the game and I'm glad the player base will shoot up soon. In other rocket League News, the sports scene has gone through a lot of flux. Major organs left, but then liquid joined in with a revamped structure today, energy also announced an interesting new move that as far as I know is a first of its kind in east, sports. Shopping the naming rights to the Rocket League team. Trying to find a brand sponsor, likely an automotive company, one of the best teams of the game, energy recently signed cloud nine star squishy muffins to replace four time champion Turbo. This seems like a unique situation in the past teams came directly from brands like South Korean. Telecom or galaxy, but I don't recall an organization shopping. Michael Smith on the Paul Finebaum Show

"You're listening to the Paul Finebaum Show podcast and we're delighted to welcome all of you back. Oh one of the Tru truly great reporters On the on the college sports business seen in Michael Smith joining us now. In one of the most recent issues of the Sports Business Journal talking about The first six years of the College Football Ballpoint Michael Great to have you on we. We're always looking for ways to talk. I'd rather do it other than on the only on the air. But we're delighted to have you here and I wanna I just first of all Just have you do reflect on some of the reporting that you did in this piece as well as your own observations of the first uh for six years of the College Football playoff. Hey Paul thanks for having me So good catch up with you and You know the point of the story was to look at the College Football Playoff Championship game. We're six years into it now. The the deal it is being goes twelve years so we felt like at at this midpoint on the TV contract. It was a good time to kind of take stock of what has worked what has not worked and so we went out and hold a lot of marketing then media experts and got their opinions on on that question and so as you can imagine. Most of the feedback was positive It's better than the system we had before But it still leaves a lot of questions in terms of how do you grow the TV audience. Had He made it. It could schedule more consistent so we don't have two weeks between the semi final and final. How do we keep games off of New Year's Eve questions like that that they continue to come up and no real solution for right now you also took look with ESPN executives About the time of the game. And that's a that's that's a complaint you get all the time this year. The game ended. I think twelve fourteen no the game a couple of years ago when even later an and Michael you and I live on the East eastern time zone we forget there are people in California who are three hours behind us but That's not going to change. There's a no it's not gonNA change you know. Five of the six championship games have gone past midnight. And like you said some going well past midnight and that's where it really comes down to. How competitive the game is and with LSU pulling away at that point the viewer show probably after midnight was not as great raise. It would have been saved for the Alabama Georgia overtime game. No it's a really good point Let me ask you since you are You know all these people pool and I know you just go through spending some time and can't wait to hear more about it with Jim Delany in Nashville. Who Retired how? How does college football allow the Big Ten and the PAC twelve and more importantly the Rosebowl? Aw dictate everything else that goes around it. The that's kind of age old question June and You know there. There's such an allegiance. There's such loyalty to to the ball. Games like especially the Rosebowl like you pointed out often and that really is one of the major factors. You know the rosebowl being locked in at that time. New Year's Day on factors I y you cannot consistently put the semifinals on New Year's Day. And then come back with the championship game a week later And there there's just It's almost hard to explain. But there there's such a sense of The the Rose Bowl has been so. Oh good to college football that you do have loyalists like Jim Laney and others the you know who the SEC. In the sugar bowl for example that They they don't want to relinquish that. And so the only way to make sure the Rose Bowl and sugar bowl maintain that status as they own new year's Day. I wonder again. I have great admiration for Delaney and the fact that I would give him the credit here. I think you can correct a For being able to do this and then what did the SEC do. As you've reported Mike's life came in and said okay. If they're going to do that we wanna own the sugarbowl Slob of the problem with the sugar. The ball slot. Mike is at the game. Doesn't start till nine o'clock right. You know that's you know that's an aspect active Of all the experts that we talked to media marketing is worth. We talked to the one criticism or the one Miss when you talk about a hitter misses that kept coming up was the inconsistency the scheduling and maybe not being able to capitalize as much on in the semifinal games as they would like you know we saw the TV audience really spiked with that first championship game between Satan Oregon Oregon and since then it's Kinda settled in lower number right around twenty five million viewers. That's a fantastic crowd in this definitely It definitely gives. ESPN the ability to own that that evening. But when you think about the Super Bowl being eighty five to ninety million million viewers compared to twenty five million for the College Football Championship. You wonder how. How is the CFPB championship game? Going to grow its viewership and And the inconsistency of this is one of the factors that a lot of people pointed to that that could limited going forward and and I wonder listen. I don't I don't want to minimize twenty five million people That's a big number and when you look at the most watched events of the year after the super bowl off the collar after the Super Bowl and the in the NFL playoffs College football biggest night is huge. But I'm just watching it this week and I realized the Kobe tragedy has has cast a pall but From here on as you know Michael you're in the sports business world the Super Bowl. Aw is as big of an event as there is in the world and college. Football just seem like it's sandwiched in between the NFL. Playoff off games on Saturday and Sunday right. So this schedule if you think about it There were three. NFL Sundays in between the semi finals. The final amazing and so that goes back to the consistency question the scheduling and being able to maximize the opportunity to college. Football has to to own certain days as and when you think about cargo owning January first and neither the finals nor the semifinals are on January. First it seems a little counterintuitive and January. I was a huge day. I mean the the audience for the Michigan Alabama Citrus Bowl was was Gargantuan and so it's not like ESPN is going broke on this. I mean they're still doing pretty well. And maybe maybe the maybe. Maybe they're better off owning the semi final day and New Year's Day. I don't know I'm just a lowly employees at ESPN. But my question to you is what happens next We're sick. We're we're six years in then every year. There's this rampant speculation that something's about to change and it never seems to. You know all these people you spend a lot of time with the college football powerbrokers our brokers Between now and when are they going to alter if assuming they are the college. Football playoff are more people are more schools getting again we. That's a great question and an access is is definitely one of the one of the questions that I post a lot of the people that work in that space and There's there seems to be a consensus that that the commissioners at least are willing to talk about. That's a good thing. That's a step forward but I don't know of anyone who thinks it's going to happen before this. This twelve year contract runs. It runs its course and so it could happen in the next contract. I I definitely think it's something that will be discussing the talk about you know not keep coming back to this loyalty to bowl games. One of the one of the arguments that I hear against the eighteen playoff is about those four teams that lose in the in the quarterfinals awesome. They don't get the bowl experience. Well if you're one of those four teams they lost in the quarterfinals. Would you rather have a shot at being in the playoff. Who would you rather be able to spend a couple of days at a theme park having your bowl experience and so those it almost sounds kind of silly but those are the kind of conversations that are taking place when they're contemplating expansion and let me ask you Michael I mean this year we had the the the the peculiarity of the lending tree bowl in mobile with all due. Respect to lending three which happens to be headquartered around the corner from where we were sitting having a bowl game on Monday night and I realized I was a Corcoran the schedule but that late in the process I mean is that experience really that meaningful. I I've been to the College Football Bowl Association. I've heard what those guys say and they work very hard but still It just seems discombobulated up to me and many others. Yeah you know I. I guess that's just to me the the the the mid to third week in December bowl and and also the ones that you're talking about leading up to the championship game and early January. I just you know. Obviously they're important. TV CONTENT FOR ESPN but also they provide an opportunity to go on. PREGAME halftime the post game to talk about the next game. And so it's all part of the build up in an intersection that way. You know one other thing. I was thinking about fall. We're talking about kind of the future of the CFP in this current contract in years. Eleven and twelve. They're still to championship game sites to be determined. And that's something that will happen in the next couple of years but That's one of the things I'm GONNA be. Watching is what two cities are able to land. There's there's last two championship games in this twelve year cycle. What I'm curious before you go? What what are the next couple of years? Look like for the CIP in terms of In terms of site well Indianapolis is in there somewhere. It it is Is going to go obviously Miami and La to the new stadium in Houston. Okay then those last two years are to be determined. But you could definitely envision like Las Vegas a while you could invade eh envision somebody like Orlando that has bid for championship games in the past. you could go to north to a minneapolis or two met met life in New Jersey New York Those are those are some of the sites that I think this year Vegas is going to get a pretty good workout with what's to the NFL draft and everything else. It's hard to imagine not being in the Niger. That's a lot of a lot of places are going Michael Michael Fascinating If it's a really incredible read and of course anytime Vince Thompson is quoted.
