Thank you for coming on and joining us. We completely appreciate it for taking the time out So so johnnie. Let's talk come. let's how we start off. You know most shows had did it all start for you. You know like your your love for basketball was basketball. Your i love you. Did you have another sport that you that you grew up watching or playing or was it really Basketball pretty much first and foremost of course so i was really young much younger. My parents really weren't big on sports. Everyone always makes fun. I'm six four. My dad's five foot nine ran disagreed. It's agreed genetic anomaly. But so i i never really play that much as a kid when i got to eleven or twelve. I'm middle school high school and all the and everyone stopped with saying you play basketball. You should consider playing so i tried. I wasn't really good after about three years. I i go to xavier. I play plan the basketball team at any americans. Listening to a lot about and i was i played. I play i. I wasn't going. So yeah i was playing with that level. Gets a high school. Think i'm good. Get cuffed freshman. Sophomore and freshman. Jv and varsity basketball team that savior and making a senior. I mean i really. I would say when he came together was popularized sophomore year. When i got from. Jv i realize okay like that. Making farsi at this point is never been done before. It's almost compulsive impossible. If i will do this. I gotta go on so i kinda went onto basketball whether it was obviously opposite playing training but also obviously watching the game i got became started going to games. I never really gone before. Some finally going against experiencing mike. My dad would take me Sixteen i went to my first game which was a knicks rockets. Game had a lot of fun going there. And i mean at that point that i'm making my senior had some confidence i start really taking it seriously. I mean right before that. And for mehran i mean after after high school. I really started looking at it as a possible. Career started looking at an all different ways in ends quantities. A big part because it helped me start. Like a podcast. I'm like i'm going to touch on the sports business club and then going into How mike and mike and In the michigan sports business conference just hours ago. Amish just every sin wagon train network meet new people and kinda just i mean i. It's funny how it started with me. Begrudgingly jumping into basketball at age. Eleven or twelve but now it's it's everything i think about is everything i do. Yeah you know a big shout out to the michigan. Sports business conferences altogether. It's been great. The panels have been great. You know obviously Helping out you know college students in and putting them on the right path to success. And.

"I was scared of it. I like oh. My god go there and everyone's going to be so much better than me and it's going to be so scary and then i get there and everyone's like oh my god you're so young and then controller that seem to culture basketball game. Zebras fifteen minutes in the barclay center jumped on a train. Happy to the conference coach game. I thought it'd be a bad thing. But i mean i didn't know any better because when i came back all cared about was how did the game go. Did you guys win. What happened right. And and there's definitely this community there and everyone kind of wants help each other out at the same time. I feel like you need to have something to offer both ways. It has to be a way to provide value. One of the best pieces gobs. From what am i guess. Kevin talked with sports agent. And he's very big on its whole networking idea. He has his own podcast where he kind of gives these sports business types obey sports business sports business daily or that's the publication. It's sports business secrets but he does a great job of always about how. How can you provide value now to be completely honest with you. My thousands of listens to where when tommy sheppard came on as gm or the wizards. Did he get damaged publicity. probably not. it's not that i provided that way. But i think what's bigger is the effort to because tommy sheppard gets emails from everyone. He gets people asking for jobs all day long. I people my sports business club asked me. Hey can you. Can you send me an email asking for a job for me. And i was like. He's never gonna respond to. That's just not how it works. If i tom shepherd said hey tommy i'm john. I'm nineteen whatever. I'm super passionate basketball. Can i get a job. There's no he'd ever respond to me a million years because he gets up gets pub keywords when someone says can i get it probably immediately goes to the spam folder. You probably have set up somewhere. Because that's all he gets asked. Because i kind of offered him something. Even though it wasn't in the grand scheme of things my show doesn't get thousands of listens. It was still an attempt at saying. Hey tommy how can i provide value. Here's a platform i created. I'm trying my best to do something that helps both of us. That's what made them respond. And that's the same thing with all my i mean there's so many fast them for job for advice. They might be willing to respond. They also might not so it really goes both ways and and that's something i think that it it's another thing like i said with the link for it allows people that really are. We'll go that step above to really stand up. So what's what's your big goal. Let is it that you want to achieve in in the basketball world. If you don't know right now that's totally fine. I'm really curious about. If you haven't your way. How would things and out for you so my immediate answer to this is always. I want to be an mba gm. And i mean. It's really not something that i'm a hundred percent confident. Being so young. I can change my career ten times in the next five years and be and be a hundred percent..

"In a fairway. Because i'm telling you the the dream side. The upside the the fruits of your hard labor. It's it's worth taking all that in los angeles little bit been there before. I've been there where you lose your train of thought. And that's nor you get better at that as you go along but that still happens. Everybody who's trying to thought. Probably because you're you're listening so to me so that you wrote forgot about what was next car you want to go on to your story. What do you do when that happens. I mean maybe has happened recently but when it happens on air what would have any money from any. He's this two things that i do. What one. I just don't say thing so if i'm interviewing you and i'm like hey. How have you been doing this podcast. And you ask you a question. Maybe i can't remember ordonio. My next question is i'll do this. So what do you want to do tomorrow like. I'll pause to think so you don't have that. Well let me like now. When i do have my a- moments it will be like this. And i ended this part out unless it's a live interview. I could say all right. So what made you get into doing these podcasts. And you answer your question. Then i may say so when you go home you try to prepare. Actually let me rephrase that. How much work do you do at home to prepare for your show. You see what i'm saying. I'll use that. Let me rephrase. It doesn't sound bad. It's just like let me let me let me change the question up a little bit. So it's like. I had a question. But i wanted to change it up but it doesn't sound that okay. That's great advice from me. I mean i kind of need that some time. Because i'm always listening to listen and and we'll take him what you say but that's kind of when when you have to do some things that it also gets. A little jumbled up in net never admit that she forgot the question or you know where you just. Don't say a thing or rephrase the say well let me let me rephrase the question or let me say it in a different way make up something. Get some question. he's the he's thinking of question there just one last question to i normally am things with with the last question about advice your former self but we do have one that we touched on in the in the class with with the big sports business club. Because we don't talk about this enough on this podcast in terms of some dating advice for for some people that really need it. We had rage debate on in our in our sports. business clubs. Zoom about the. Yes or yes theory about how. You should always ask you a question that it's a double positive. You don't wanna say you wanna get dinner with or not. It's juliet coffee or dinner. And you gave some really lining thoughts on that and they really a lot of people out maybe sponsored success stories in the club. And i i don't want to reveal too much. But what are your thoughts on on. That's for for the people that weren't in that call. I'm trying to remember exactly what i said. It was good it was. I know we went another half hour about like dating. I don't. I don't remember what i said but what i do know is that being confident changes a lot of things and it's not just date is even the broadcasting field when you're when you're confident in yourself like you come across really well on television and to rever you're to go on a date with you go up to somebody like Can i get your phone Like i hope nobody's like that but it'd probably are that may turned somebody off because they're not same way. If you go on television you like oh. I've forgot what my question was went on. I was wondering what game. Yeah so show the confidence be confident in yourself but also prepare. I know for me. I my stuff was never scripted. My stuff was just just be me and be confident and don't worry about like the yesterday. No i mean you want the yes like if you have somebody you want to go on a date but i always went into it. Not worrying about the no i was always going into. She's gonna say yes. I hate negativity is easier said than done your parts. pounding while you're doing it man. I'm married guy now. So it's like. I've been out of the game but i do like the fact. Would you like to go to launch or would you want to go to dinner or something like that to me. That's what. I was mentioning before like my dad and some of the things that he taught me to be respectful in and not go to a girl and say like hey you want to go out or hey you want to go somewhere. It's like being prepared already. Having a plan might go into. Hey you wanna you wanna go out to lunch. Oh i guess so. Where will this nice coffee shop that. I went to before when i was studying in school and i think he should go to. They have live music and stuff like that like bam like. I'm sold myself like have that in your back pocket ready to go because it it. It just shows like okay. You're really confident you're taking control of of the situation. I think in the class. I was mentioning before the the the ordering the food that you get up about that. He said i explain explain proper before we go people in tonight so this this doesn't closely for all the fellas out there. I mean it be women to Depending on who you date or whatever and the phones here are big. The big fellas basketball podcast. These guys are big. Big for the big fellas podcast for big. Here's some big big time advice. That i need to give you when you go on a date. Talk to the person you're on a date with and go over the menu and see what they want to eat and if they say hey. I want cheese burger with lettuce tomatoes but extra catch. Oh okay. Hey that's that's good all right. You don't like tomatoes okay. Why don't you like tomatoes. Whatever heart in that conversation so then when the waiter comes up you say you don't control with the person eats but you under you listen to why they want this particular food item and and the way they want so then when the waiter comes you can say yes this lovely person or like a cheeseburger lettuce tomatoes but she will love to have extra catch one that's whack because it will show you that. Hey i'm being a man's taking control not taking control control but meaning as being a gentleman by ordering the food for her but also understanding and listening because a lot of people like especially in any relationship. You gotta listen as way up two years. One mouth lis- listen twice as much as you talk now in listening to what cheer he or she likes that means. I'm showing effort to get the no one understand. That person and that will go a long way. That's the my job done that you so much. Not not just dating stuff. That's that's life stuff. That's the sports business stuff. That's just all kinds of gospel. So thank you so much for that. And i really appreciate coming on a man on that listening to the big fellows podcast. "Imagine if you play The Courtland Sutton like off if you didn't have Brett Rypien throw them. I know I know what's your background man? How did you start doing YouTube? I'm so curious about that. Yeah, so I kind of always knew I wanted to work in sports, but I was really going the sports business route throughout College. I went to University of Saint Thomas. I'll I'll read the took off Emoji here next to me us where that where the team. I don't know if you remember the article that the D3 team that got kicked out of their own conference for winning too much. That's right. Okay, that was fun. So I was down there. I was in charge of the the sports Business Club. I did internships for local baseball teams will still with the Timberwolves on the business side, and I was like honestly dead. Not digging this like if I'm going to sell sell something or do marketing. I'd rather make a bunch more money and have better hours and do it somewhere else. Yeah, but I didn't want to give up on doing sports at home. So I just went completely out of the sports business realm and I applied for PFF online got that job. And then I started my YouTube channel is like a little Pet Project cuz I had like I said the the Madden roster and that that roster was a great source for me to start YouTube because it was a a way to mark my channel cuz it has a little description on there. It's going to be like Yep. This is my ratings. If you want me to talk about them go to YouTube is that simple and then I just really enjoy doing that and thought it was almost exclusively mad and stuff and then the draft season rolled around cuz I started that in the fall and the draft season rolled around I started talking some mock drafts and stuff and those started doing job. And I was like, wow, this is actually kind of working. So I I really doubled down the next fall. I took a job doing valet. So I had money for rent and I was just like I'm going to really dead girl pedal-to-the-metal on YouTube and PFF and that was one of the most busy years. Well now pretty damn busy too. But that was just crazy how much time I put into office in film and making sure that I was as intelligent as I could be because if you don't really know what you're talking about, you're not going to stand out and that's just slowly grown and out of had a lot of help from whether it's subscribers or friends and family and just kind of stayed with it. And here we are kudos to you man. The way the initial growth. When you're first starting off is so hard because you're usually doing something else like I was in College full-time. I had a full-time second job. I also had a part-time job doing college football games and trying to make content on the site sucks. What it's like to do give all this other stuff going on what you're trying to do this thing. Like this is what I really want to do is make content and you can't yet and it was so frustrating. But when once you finally get over the hump, you're like, I'm afraid it's so amazing. Yeah, I always tell people the first the first hundred subscribers are easily the hardest. Yeah. Oh absolutely and then you gotta keep going after that. Right? It's just it's cool man. I'm happy for you. I really like you..
