How Lessons From Esports Past Drives Esports Future with Repeat.gg CEO Aaron Fletcher

"This audience. So Eric go through the companies you found it quite a few there are plenty of starts across this industry. What advice can you give to some one of the first steps of fouling their own Esports or gaming company that you wish you do when you were starting out darn raised before you have Mom don't do anything until you have markets it it's it's that's it. That's purely it. I guess there's two things and don't be a dick but the the biggest one is definitely until you have some formal Market 5th and you can find out if you go to market fit pretty quickly just talk to people ask questions find the right people finding users find those things find out how much they willing to pay find out if they're willing to basically walk or use your product find out all these sort of things and grow that first before you start thinking. Oh, this is amazing. This is going to work cuz I think there's there's and and then I guess the other one actually is learned from birth. Past experiences and a lot of people don't do that, especially with a t Sports because the history have a have a chat to someone like either myself or have a chat like don't talk to someone who's a consultant that's been in the year in in the game two years talked to someone who's being in the industry for twenty years because they will tell you a lot more valuable information than someone who's been in there for two years and only knows about the currency because the current scene it's all about raising this big money about raising this big capital and you don't get the history of like the companies like tournament.com the raised a hundred million dollars and went broke over six months. You don't have seats need a CDL or CTS. I think it is that raised a hundred million dollars as well and we're broke after a year-and-a-half. You don't have all of these kind of things and we're play verse was as an example before they became what they raised what they are now off and that that you kind of could find on the internet even though I know the history there and there's a lot of other companies like that that you'll that you you only get from the perspective of people that have actually been in the industry because people have a game Get it either scrubbing the internet or it's just hard to find anything that isn't relevant now absolutely agree. It's the same advice. I give to student journalists. I talked to quite a few classes about hey, what could you do any sports journalist? What if we want to get involved in this space? And the first thing I tell them is get to know the history of the space get to know everything that happened with Major League Gaming from 2002 to 2010. That's where the start get to the creedy sports Association how this developed in Asia and that will guide your accurate reporting on this space if you understand what happened long before you probably got involved in it that was the case for me cuz we got a school, you know, I was in the 2015 2016 range was like, oh massive Madison Square Garden League of Legends. This is crazy thing off you go back in time and you're like, okay, let's look at the Madden tour bus as like an example of where it's these things that happen is sports over the time that I think are really crucial job. Like understand how we got to the place where at today and then helped give you those guiding lessons to make sure that the same mistakes aren't made. Well MLG an ESL at two really good examples of understanding their Acquisitions why they happened what happened with the issues they ran into especially MLG with God Frank cuz they had a whole pile of litigation issues with God frag when they did their acquisition why they got acquired by Activision and wage. It's it's an interesting story. That's probably better for another time. But in terms of those sort of things and that history that was kind of built there is actually really important because getting a quiet is a skilled gaming platform different platform broadcasting platform any of those by a publisher is a huge problem from both illegal Nightmare and a whole pile of other things because the skilled gamer is 18 plus as well as the tournament system requires 18 plus or Parental Guidance cetera, et cetera. So it becomes a Minefield on those sort of things and then you've got ESL same thing going through their acquisition and the different times they are now with mods. This group and and the difference in the kind of the company structure cuz everyone says he s l and they see these companies and they're like, they must be making it a billion dollars and I'm like, yeah doesn't look like that. It may seem like that from the outside cuz they're doing these large events and they're doing these things. But in terms of the revenue is not driven as much as you kind of think from that. It's really driven through the Publishers. Yeah, if you're done if you're not the publisher gave and you work a t sport chances are the money is not flowing your exactly there's only a few Outlets the kind of work and I've been in basically every single facet of that because I used to run events with the young. I used to run a lot of those sort of things with them for a long time. Actually u c l e s w c w c g a lot of the events around those and running those Live Events is is great. But it's like a break even marketing cost. It's not a it's it's what you'll use to fuel income elsewhere. Not what you're used to make money lost leader marketing basically at this point. Yeah, exactly. That's it's a funny industry to be it especially as we look at where these Sports organizations are going. This is totally off topic. By the way. Just the I had em for this wasn't for a podcast but I talked to Jason Lake in Andy Miller Jason Lake complexity CEO Andy Miller NRG CEO for audience. I do you do that. They were basically talking about hey, we're going to make Revenue eventually with our religious the Publishers of Olives. That's that's what we're counting on to make money in the mean time. We're going to keep building our brand up in whatever way we can we're to keep trying to capture feds. But really we just need to log get to a point where Publishers need us to enter the game because that will bring fans that will bring the marketing there looking for and then the Publishers have to reward us for doing so and that's kind of just walk the biggest eastwards organizations in the world see this space right now and that's it tells a lot. I think it will you actually have a look at most of these Sports organizations or actually converting from competitive Play De comme Recreation almost all right, converting over to that for Revenue basis cuz I've talked to a lot of these guys you have come like you've got Team Liquid as an example of trying to push in the text side of things cuz we've talked to him a few times about what they're doing for Thursday. We also consulted with the guild who raised with David Beckham, or they paid David Beckham to re it was it was a debacle. It was a drastic they they they are doing a good job. I think they really heavily like ninety percent of the money that they raised is purely attack. It's not to do to build out the team and build out anything on that account on the arm competitive site is secured purely build out both the content side as well as a Tech play on them because of the end of the day all this content and everything that they're creating in these fans and these users they need to figure out a way to monetize them and monetizing them generally comes through like merchandise. It comes through tourneys to come home a brand deals. And unfortunately, if you're the best game in the world, it doesn't mean you have a massive following you may not be entertaining to watch. So therefore content creation becomes king for this and which dog And fuels Brands which in turn fuels everything else and like I just talking to so as as Consulting with IDC, I think like probably a couple of weeks ago. I was I was talking to them cuz they're doing metro sports at the moment and it was a pretty interesting conversation cuz they're one of the first companies that isn't Yuzu that isn't that they're doing it. They're doing Esports Revenue a very different way. So Esports Revenue right now is off late. It is how much so it's like one point two billion or something. It's basically nothing compared to the publisher revenues like a hundred and sixty billion. So and that's where most of the revenue from E Sports is actually going. So what they're doing is they're doing a bottom-up kind of approach and looking at all of these other things that are kind of skewing it. So right now Esports revenue is calculated with just brands that are paying for events and advertising and all the way around that around which basically whereas they're looking at it from the other side of things and they're like, look, there's all this gambling Revenue that's also generated on top of Like betting on these matches and all this this looking that's that's showing any sports revenue and you've got companies like skills that their revenue alone for skills is bigger than the revenue of every single e sports team exists in the world in his voice. That's

"How strong dog you'd think you have do enough police training and enough scenarios and enough crazy places with noth environmental stressors you will find something that will wish to defend right there's there's no dog that's just ironclad i'm sorry if you think if you think that's the case you just haven't worked in but we just a couple of weeks ago we just had a paul ludwig and sam edmonds on from canine guardians and as you know like that's what they pride the cell phone as working with the police department the police canines and saying what is this dog's weakness and we're gonna find it when we dunk it underwater when it's on a bite like it let's go or when i pick it up like so yeah i think they would definitely agree with that as there's there's no hundred percent solid it's just like a person's you know you know the the comparisons to emma may you know like every fighter has a week nate nate diaz got conor mcgregor on his back and right he submitted them that his weakness was ground gain compared to eighty s but i you know i think i think a lot of people see these high dogs and they just think that they're undefeated savages and they are for the most part you know you know very strong dogs like you have pray driven dogs and then you have you know what my friends assured hilliard calls non classically aggressive dogs they don't show aggression in terms of you know showing the teeth in the in the snarling and you know in a classical defensive posture it's non classically aggressive which is basically what we call a prey monster dog and you know a lot of the special ops guys like those types of dogs so if you come from a background we see a lot of ranger dogs or you see a lot of you know a sealed odds and stuff like that they tend to be like that because his wanted to go in and be unconscious and just and going to buy anything.

"Of it and and it's important because in psa from my understanding correct me if i'm wrong in order to be a decoy you have to get certified through psa to be to be a trial deco yeah okay for trial without having to be officials have to be anything official out a lot of people come out to the certifications and it's you know andrew sterner who has a club down in north carolina you know he next to us he made a really cool video that he posted his native club is just another sport dog really nice video of the decoy camp that sean ran down there at his place sean sagan's is my head police dog trainer and the director decoys for psa and he he ran the club he ran the the camp down there and it's pretty impressive to see what we put these guys through to actually certify and i had a recently had some had some meetings with some some fairly high level appeal competitors and they're like i i couldn't believe what you put these decoys through to certify them and you know it's not very many that come out to get certified but there are a lot of people come out that probably can't certifies trial decoy but can be a very very capable and able club decoy helped train the dogs and you know i mean i've i've never worked a psa trial i was kind of like two old right before that into never worked psa trial but i certified a ton of psa decoys or some of the best that we have and you know and and and for you know for me you know i i'm fortunate that i have so many good decoys in my club you know between you know having having sean there and then and stuff on there all certified psa decoys and some of our some of our students and interns that that really pitch in and help train on a weekly basis you know but like those guys are they're they're young and they're fast and they put their heart into being good decoys not just good trial decoys but also being really really good training decoys.

"Yeah we did this morning that's cool so so people can go to the website fine if the psa club in their area see where the events are taking place show up if they want to watch check it out trouser open for people come and we encourage people come in check it out yeah for sure and the club contacts are on there so if there's a club near your area you can definitely come out and you know and and call them and have you to training and you know hopefully you know we're we're hoping more people people start clubs you know it's one of those things where i was i was looking for existing clubs knows tell people if you build it they will come like if you if you if you if you start a club people will will find you on and then you can put together a good group joe's burgers how do you say he a club fredericksburg virginia we need one in this air how do you how do you start a club like if i wanted to start one easy if you go on the website there's you know cost one hundred dollars to register club we don't really regulate the clubs some people run him as businesses and people around him as nonprofits but we will give you help in getting things started you need three members to start out and it's all you need and the biggest the biggest the the two biggest things that i always tell people is you know you have to you have to have training decoys right and you have to be willing to travel little bit to go to maybe more stylish clubs shirt and work together with people and you know it's just like anything else you have to get socialized into the into the sport learn you know what the you know what the nuances are what's expected on trial day that sort of thing so going to trials and sort of seeing what it's all about knowing how to prepare for it knowing how to train the dogs and there's a lot of information that you know that a lot of these new clubs need a lot of times is really good trainers that are starting the clubs and so just a matter of them learning the particularities the nuances.

"He ended up with some puncture arm but yeah it's it's a you know it's pretty it's pretty cool to see these countries where they don't have a welldeveloped augsburg culture they're trying to get into psa the hard part is you gotta have dogs of the quality that are necessary to work in that sport and you've got to have the training knowledge correct it does take a little while for them to ramp up but we have so many dedicated people in these in these foreign countries that are getting into it and also around the states that you know that are getting into it and putting a lot of effort into building it and that sort of thing so it's it's pretty it's impressive from my background and and to answer your question no i i really i never really thought about it growing internationally to be honest with you know when it when we started in canada which are are first you know foreign country even on my canadian friends foreigners to me they're just like light versions of america exactly and they started up there and we started growing up there and all be in canada for you know for a couple of events this year and we've got austrailia going and shaun edwards one of our decoys he's the famous deadpool decoy on facebook i'm sure you saw him and his is a little bit of atta control caused play going on right so so you know he's going to be down there he's a yes a judge in an initial level decoys going to be down there doing a seminar on and and judging trial and australian june so yeah we got tons of stuff coming up south africa again airland is having an event in you know in august as well south africa capetown south africa going to malaysia next month to you know sort of introduced the sport over there little bit i just got back from costa rica last month doing that so it's it's a lot of traveling but it's a lot of fun.

"Mondeo and i p o and all that what was what what's the main thought process when you in joe were coming up with it main the main thought process really was we wanted to create something fairly unique i started out in ipo i had had a lot of people that you know were you know were into other sports when we first started creating it there were some surprise narrow sports out on the west coast that were very small and sort of contained to certain geographical areas and and we did a little bit of you know a little bit of playing around with those and you know we just we thought to ourselves we could do something better and you know we had traveled a lot in europe bind og joan i and you know so we had seen you know belgian ring we'd seen you know french ring seen ipo trials in europe we'd seen camp e trials in europe many times into ev national so we kind of had a sense of what the sport world was about at a fairly high level and so our goal was then to say you know what do we like about all these sports and what can we do to kind of american americanize it a little bit and make it a you know the kinda thing that you know we want to account even shut my phone off i'm sorry about that but yeah we we wanted to americanize a little bit and say all right well what what can we do and that was sort of like the the whole idea was to create a surprise areas so that you get there and the judge walks us through your obedience routine or protection routine tells you.

"State of wisconsin you can and cannot do you want to play sports in your a convicted felon that's just fide commit armed robberies while you're out a basketball team that's just fine but god forbid the got too many practices that's real real bad on a semi related note the story today's newspaper about the ongoing problems that the state high school sports association is having with regard to this problem of asked competitive parretti and competitive balance the problem is this in the major sports we divide stay championships ended a visions in football i think they're seven and basketball what are they up to now five division one division twodivision threedivision four divisions five what's happening is a lot of the really small rural schools it out say wisconsin say they have no chance right now they don't want to come out and say what the problem is but here's what they say here's what the problem is this a lot of schools of the milwaukee area that don't have a high enrollment that are really really good and they're kicking their tail clearly who's the racial under current to this topic many of these schools happened to have some fairly talented african american athletes and some of these smaller farm could schools dole think they compete against those kids and in fact the cad some of those schools are swallowed robertson milwaukee do indeed walk all over schools of similar enrollment from out state wisconsin but here's the thing that makes the attempts to do what do you think about this problematic some schools with lowered role months in milwaukee with primarily african american kids are just as bad as some of these rural schools the problem is this the kids go to whatever school that they want so you might have won milwaukee school of law enrollment but does it have very very talented kids at all but another school of law enrollment.
